Doniphan County will close their construction and demolition landfill.
The county commission voted Monday to take the action due to compliance regulation violations and stringent guidelines imposed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
The commission will use the $3,000 in penalties imposed against the county by KDHE toward the closure costs.
The commission will contract with engineer Chris Cox with Schwab-Eaton of Manhattan to develop a closure plan and quality control assurance plan relative to the actual closure activities at a cost not to exceed $10,000.
In other business, Sheriff Jerry Dubach reported they are currently housing 9 local inmates and 4 Kansas Department of Corrections inmates in the Doniphan County Jail. Dubach said an additional four inmates from the Department of Corrections may be housed in the county jail in the near future.
Dubach also informed commissioners that Rhonda Boyle has been hired full-time to fill the vacant dispatcher position at a rate of $9.50 an hour, effective February 22nd.
