'Tis the tax season, and with it comes related scams, using the name of the IRS to rip off taxpayers(Play Audio :10 seconds)
That's Michael Devine, regional spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service(Play Audio :24 seconds)
Devine says avoiding becoming a victim of a tax time scam is simple: don't answer the email, or the caller's questions. Instead, be proactive and contact the agency directly to see if there's any validity to the solicitation(Play Audio :43 seconds)
Meanwhile, Devine says there's one scam, in particular, being reported as circulating and primarily aimed at senior citizens(Play Audio :42 seconds)
Another specific scam, misrepresenting the IRS, involves education credits(Play Audio :51 seconds)
Any unexpected email, or call, claiming to be the IRS, should be considered a scam.
Additionally, the agency will never ask for personal, and financial information, in an email, with such attempts to be reported to the IRS or local authorities.
