The Johnson-Brock Board of Education held another special meeting Thursday evening to discuss options for the football field turf project. The board is considering replacing the current playing surface, including one option to install an artificial turf field.
Superintendent Jeff Koehler says the board met Thursday with people in the district who may be able to help with dirt work and rock hauling for the project. (play audio :28)
Koehler says the board wants to make sure everything is lined up before making a decision on installing a new surface on the football field. Mainly, he says they want to be sure the work can be completed before the first football game this fall.
Koehler says they are also considering a couple other options other than the artificial turf. (play audio :19)
Either of those options, Koehler says, would cost between 40-and-60 thousand dollars and would require installation of an underground sprinkler system. He says the artificial turf is something that may not be an option in a couple years. (play audio :15)
The district would receive a 63-thousand dollar grant – covering one quarter of the estimated cost of the project – from the Department of Environmental Quality, as the proposed artificial surface would be made of recycled tires.
Another factor, Koehler says, is that there are people in the community who have experience laying artificial turf who have volunteered to help with the project.
The Johnson-Brock School Board is expected to make a decision whether to install artificial turf – or go with another option for the football field – at its next regularly scheduled meeting on May 14th.
