( KNZA ) --A grant will be sought to improve a Brown County road.
Certified grant writer Virginia Dienstbier meet with Brown County Commissioners Tuesday to discuss an application for a $127,700 Community Development Block Grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce to improve a one-mile stretch of Goldfinch Road from 290th to 300th Roads.
Commissioners agreed to set a public hearing on the grant application for September 17th at 9:30 that morning.
Brown County is being asked to apply for the grant on behalf of Hamlin Township because it's a township road.
If approved, the grant would be used to apply three layers of chip and seal hard surface, replace three drainage tubes and clear the drainage ditches.
The grant would allow the expansion of two businesses, Grimm’s Gardens and Midwest Valley Irrigation, located at 2991 Goldfinch Road.
The two businesses will jointly commit a nearly $64,000 investment in inventory, working capital or equipment, and create four new full-time jobs.
In addition, the two businesses will agree to repay the CDBG program 25 percent of the project cost or $31,900 over a period not to exceed ten years.
Commissioner Warren Ploeger said the grant is a way of getting a heavy traveled road improved.
