( KNZA )--Formation of a wrestling cooperative between the Hiawatha and Horton school districts is moving forward.
Hiawatha High School Principal Alan Jeffery told the school board Monday evening that the Kansas State High School Activities Association has approved the wrestling cooperative.
The cooperative would allow the Hiawatha School District the opportunity to re-instate a middle school wrestling program, which was discontinued two years ago due to state funding cuts.
Jeffery said the next step would be to hire an assistant middle school wrestling coach. The board voted to give Superintendent Penny Hargrove permission to hire an assistant coach, who would drive a district van to transport middle school wrestlers to Horton daily for practice. The assistant coach would assist the Horton middle school coach.
Both districts will still have their own teams, but they will be practicing together and competing together at times. The middle school team will be based out of Horton and the high school team based out of Hiawatha.
Jeffery said meetings are planned at both schools to gauge the level of interest among students in signing up for sport.
Faced with a low number of participants in their wrestling programs, the Hiawatha and Horton school boards each voted last month to pursue a cooperative agreement for middle and high school wrestling programs.
