(KAIR) -- Almost 11 months after a fatal explosion at Bartlett Grain Elevator in Atchison, the company has been given the go-ahead to re-open for business.
According to Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking, the city’s building official issued the official certificate of occupancy Wednesday.
The I-2 Industrial permit states the entire building and grain structure is now eligible to operate.
Bartlett has been closed since October 29th, 2011 after a grain dust explosion at the facility claimed six lives and seriously injured two others.
Since then, Bartlett has re-built their elevator at 320 Riverfront Road.
The company was cited and fined thousands of dollars in April by OSHA for violations which are believed to have caused the blast.
Bartlett has stated their intentions to fight the fines.
While they have announced they are accepting grain, a date for opening for operation hasn’t been set.
