Former BSDC Worker gets Lengthy Sentence
A former worker at the Beatrice State Developmental Center has received a lengthy prison sentence for abusing residents there.
Gage County District Court Judge Paul Korslund sentenced 31-year-old Matthew Pangborn to 15-to-23 years in prison, telling Pangborn he has shown “a complete lack of remorse” for abusing developmentally disabled adults. (play audio :22 “criminal justice system.”)
A Gage County jury in July found Pangborn guilty of abusing and strangling three mentally handicapped men under his care. The jury found him guilty of abusing two of the men and choking a third over a four-month period last year.
Judge Korslund told Pangborn there’s no excuse for the pain he inflicted. (play audio :17 “for their care.”)
A whistleblower came forward and triggered an abuse investigation at B-S-D-C, which led to charges being filed against five workers. Pangborn was the only defendant to refuse a plea bargain. He could become eligible for parole in seven-and-a-half years.
