(KAIR) -- One of Atchison’s hidden treasures is set to receive more improvements.
A rising sport around the nation and an instant hit in college towns, Atchison has their very own pair of disc golf courses.
In 2007, the Atchison Park Board and Jackson Park Committee worked together to construct an 18-hole and a nine hole golf course for the community.
Park Superintendent Clinton McNamee says it the course started out with basic amenities.

As a result, the Park Board has taken notice in the renewed interest and recently allocated funding from their budget to purchase 11 concrete tee pads last year, as well as 16 more concrete tee pads to complete the project this year, which will replace the existing wooden boards.
McNamee says this is the beginning of improvements that were based from suggestions given by frequent disc golfers in an effort to make the course among the best in the region.

He says plans are in now in place to place trash receptacles on the course this year, and if utilization and interest of the sport continues to increase, the course maps and alternate basket locations may be installed as early as 2014 or 2015.
