04/15/2013

(KAIR) -- In the wake of a bomb threat causing evacuation at the Atchison County Courthouse Friday, USD 409 officials explain why students weren’t evacuated from nearby Atchison Middle School.

The decision caused an outcry of mixed feedback on social media outlets from parents and Atchison citizens following the incident.

Curriculum Director Robert Mueller explains the reasoning behind the decision to remain in the school.

Authorities say the threatening call to District Court came from a male caller that said another individual from Colorado told him that two pipe bombs were set to go off in the courthouse Friday.

Sheriff Jack Laurie says while all bomb threats are to be taken seriously, a pipe bomb typically causes less destruction and remains somewhat isolated to the area that it’s set off.
