(KAIR) -- The 18th Annual Discovery Day at Benedictine College on Wednesday will feature a presentation by the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery relating to the celebration of the sesquicentennial of their arrival in Atchison.
Each year, Benedictine College cancels its classes and meetings to allow for student presentations and the special keynote event. Activities will run from eight until 5:30 with the featured presentation from the Sisters set for one in the school’s O’Malley-McAllister Auditorium.
More than 2100 students have participated in Benedictine’s Discovery Day events since its inception in 1996. This year’s event includes more than 60 presentations featuring the works of 143 students.
Projects include such things as construction of a concrete canoe, investigating the impact of caffeine on motor skills in young adults, building a one-man hovercraft, and studying the effect of prayer on terminal cancer patients.
To celebrate 150 years since the coming of the Benedictine sisters and the beginning of a school for young women in Atchison, sisters will present a multi-media presentation on the history and relationship of their monastery to Mount St. Scholastica College and Benedictine College. Their presentation is titled, “Because She Loved More: The Story of the Followers of St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas.”
All Discovery Day events are free and open to the public.
