( KNZA)--A U.S. flag retirement ceremony has been set in Hiawatha for Sunday, November 10th.
The ceremony will be held at 2 o’clock that afternoon on the south side of the Brown County Courthouse.
The Hiawatha American Legion, Homer White Post 66, Hiawatha Boy Scout Troop 313, and Hiawatha Cub Scout Pack 117 are extending a special invitation for U.S. veterans along with area residents to attend the ceremony.
The ceremony provides a honorable way to dispose of worn, torn, faded or badly soiled flags.
In July, the Hiawatha American Legion set up a flag disposal box in the 1st floor lobby of the courthouse to provide Brown County residents a way to dispose of their old, worn, tattered and faded U.S. flags.
In conjunction with ceremony, the Brown County Historical Society will have a special traveling exhibit featuring items and artifacts from the Great Depression and WWII era. The exhibit will be open to the public at the Francis Sewell Plamann History Center ( City Hall ).
A three volley salute and taps will be played at 3 o’clock that afternoon as part of the ceremony.
