More Nebraskans Expected to Hit the Road for Year End Holidays
(KTNC) -- About one in three Nebraskans will be taking a road trip during the final two weeks of the year, according to a motor club survey. Triple-A Nebraska spokeswoman Gail Weinholzer says travel is expected to be up slightly compared to last year for the holiday period that starts Saturday and runs through New Year's Day.
She says they expect 94.5 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more from home, an increase of just under one percent. Of the Nebraskans who travel, Weinholzer says nine-in-ten will be traveling by automobile.
With so many more people driving, Weinholzer says it’s a plus that gasoline prices have been dropping since Thanksgiving. The price of gasoline in Nebraska is $3.05 per gallon, 17-cents under the national average.
Nebraska’s cheapest gas is in Omaha at $2.90 a gallon, while the most expensive gas is in Columbus at $3.17.
The upward trend in travel numbers marks the fifth consecutive year of increases and the highest travel volume recorded for the year-end holiday season.
