SEDHD Expands "Great Kids" Program in Southeast Nebraska
09/26/2013

(KTNC) - The Southeast District Health Department is expanding a program that aims to help parents of young children.
The Growing Great Kids in Southeast Nebraska Program has been providing services in Otoe County since 2008, and was expanded to Johnson, Pawnee, Richardson, and Nemaha Counties September 1st.
Program Manager Brooke Chaney says the program provides information and education to parents who are expecting a child or who have a young child at home.   (play cut)
Chaney says the program is not meant to compete with the Good Beginnings program at Community Medical Center in Falls City, which provides a nurse visit to new families.  She says the Growing Great Kids Program does provide free in-home visits to expectant parents and parents with a child up to three-months old in the other counties in their service area.
Chaney says the program has been well received by parents and physicians in Otoe County since its inception.  (play cut)
The goals of the program are to improve child health outcomes, school readiness, and language skills, and promote healthy parenting practices.
Chaney says it’s too soon to tell whether the program meets long-term goals, she says it has shown promise in other short-term areas.  (play cut)
Growing Great Kids was expanded to cover the five-county area thanks to a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services.  All services offered through the program are free to parents.
