A 32-year-old Winchester man could face prison for deceiving his 75-year-old grandmother into writing bad checks for him.
Benjamin Lansing pled guilty to the felony charge of theft by deception Wednesday in Atchison County District Court.
He was arrested by Atchison Police on April 25th for having his grandmother write 46 hundred and four dollars in checks from June of 2011 until January of 2012 in Atchison County.
Factual basis reports say Lansing told her he had deposited over 100 thousand dollars in Workman’s Comp funds into her account when he had not.
He could face five to 17 months in prison on the charge and sentencing is scheduled for June 18th.
He was also charged with violation of a protection order from a separate incident and will make an appearance Friday on that misdemeanor charge.
Lansing’s attorney asked Judge Robert Bednar for a PR bond or a bond reduction, and he denied both, stating to Lansing repeatedly, “You stole from your grandmother.”
Lansing remains in jail on 10 thousand dollars bond.
