The Mound City Board of Aldermen discussed the 2012-13 Budget during a hearing last week.
Total projected revenues for the year are $1,270,875. Operating expenses are budgeted for $937,310, with capital expenditures of $615,219, leaving a loss of $281,654. The city will cover the loss with funds from cash carryover and replacement accounts from the current year.
The Street Department budget includes $20,000 for a seal coat of the streets that were resurfaced in 2008. Mayor Chris Krueger said he would ask Keller Construction if the seal coat is needed or can be delayed another year.
Alderwoman Kristine Gibson requested $20,000 from the Capital Improvement Fund be placed in escrow for park improvements. The Park Board is drafting plans for several improvements to Mound City parks.
Those improvements include replacing the current basket house at the pool. Plans were originally to just replace the roof on the 50-year old building, but after discussing the matter with a contractor, the Park Board has determined the building needs to be replaced.
Other park improvements on the drawing board are new play equipment at Griffith Park, and moving the existing play structure at the park to Chautauqua Park.
The board is considering applying for a grant to put a walking trail around Chautauqua Park, along with outside exercise equipment. That project is a year or two away.
The Mound City Council agreed last week to proceed with replacement of the pool basket house by borrowing from available funds and repaying the loan over the next four to five years.
The council also discussed employee salaries as part of the budget hearing. The superintendents of the water and sewer departments now work six days a week, but asked to go to a five-day week at the same pay they receive for a six-day week. The request was tabled for future discussion.
