Weather permitting, on Monday, a repair project will begin on four US-36 bridges near Hiawatha. Two of the bridges are located approx .5-miles west of the US-73/US-36 junction in Hiawatha (near the 12th Street exit) and the remaining two bridges are approximately 2.3 miles and 3 miles east of the US-73/US-36 junction. Crews will complete repair work on the approaches on both ends of all four bridges. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday, during daylight hours.
Beginning on Monday, June 11, the crews will begin the installation of temporary traffic signals at both ends of all four bridges. Sometime on Monday or Tuesday, June 11 or 12, the temporary signals will be turned on and eastbound and westbound US-36 traffic will be directed in one lane across each of the four bridges via the signals. The traffic signals will be operational, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration. There will be a 50 mph posted speed limit through the project work zone and traffic will be restricted to a 15-foot lane width restriction through the work zone during the duration of the project. Drivers should expect minor delays and must allow extra time for their daily commutes throughout the duration of the project.
Bridges, Inc, of Newton, Kansas, is the primary contractor on this bridge repair project with a total contract cost of $386,337. Project work is scheduled to be completed in mid-August 2012, weather permitting.
