The annual Kansas Shrine Bowl took place in Emporia at Welch stadium on the campus of Emporia State University this weekend and four Kanzaland area athletes and one area coach participated in the game for the east squad. As Centralia's Michael Glatzcak, Baileyville-B&B's Cody Heimna, Riverside's Timmy Miller, Doniphan West's Austin Veach and Riverside's coach, Scott Koranda were all part of the East team.
Coming into the game the East squad was on a five-game losing streak to the West in the game. The Kanzaland area athletes were hoping to change that for the East this year in the 39th annual Kansas Shrine Bowl.
It would prove to be a tight ballgame, but the West extended their winning streak to six in a row with a 14-7 win. The West struck first after recovering a fumble on their offensive drive Wichita Heights quarterback, Matt Reed hit Collin Sexton (Abilene) for a 54-yard touchdown pass.
Down 7-0, the East had a fourth and four and drew the West offsides to extend the drive and that's when Centralia's, Michael Glatczak got into the action. Glatczak listed as the backup quarterback, played wide receiver most of the game and cam up big grabbing a 55-yard touchdown pass from East quarterback, Garrett Fugate (Blue Valley Northwest).
Going into the half the game was tied 7-7 and after a back and forth third quarter where neither team cashed in on their opportunities to score, it came down to the fourth. In the fourth it was the West who would reach the promise land once more as Ja'Mon Cotton (Hutchinson) scampered in for the final score of the game, giving the West a 14-7 win.
As for the Kanzaland area athletes none made their presence more known in the game than that of Centralia Panther, Michael Glatczak as he was 3-6 for 26 yards passing and caught five passes for 87 yards and a 55-yard touchdown. Riverside Cyclone, Timmy Miller, got into the action catching one pass for nine yards in the game. Doniphan West Mustang, Austin Veach made his presence known on the defensive side of the ball recording two sacks; while Baileyville-B&B's Cody Heiman also participated in the game.
