(KAIR) -- In an effort to fall in line with state statute, a committee of who’s who in Atchison County has been formed to plan for the future of solid waste disposal and assessments in the county.
The formation of the committee came to light in November and December meetings of the Atchison County Commission where many citizens came to ask questions or even protest the new solid waste fee assessments on their property taxes.
One was photography business owner Mike Stec, who said there needed to be a committee.
The previous committee that was on the books met very seldom over the years and consisted exclusively of various county employees.
The new committee came to form and had their first meeting earlier this month.
The 20-person committee includes from Atchison County, Jeff Schuele, Matt Dorssom and Chase Brunick.
Representation from the cities in the county includes from the City of Atchison: Trey Cocking, Becky Anderson, Gary Heer, Howard Seever and Derek Franklin, who is serving as the Chair of the Committee.
It also includes Kirk Wohlgemuth from the City of Effingham and Margaret Jacobs from the City of Muscotah.
Most schools within the county have representation, including the Superintendents of USD 409, USD 377 and Maur Hill Mount Academy.
Lottie Lee from Trinity Lutheran School and Matt Fassero from Benedictine College are also on the committee.
Lydia Funk, Rick Stark and D.J. Bruce represent the private sector while Stec, who’s Vice Chair, has been delegated as the citizen’s representative.
The committee also includes Delores Walton from Deffenbaugh, who was recently selected by Commissioners as the solid waste provider for the county.
Schuele says the committee plans to meet once a month for the first few months, eventually meeting quarterly after long-term plans become set in stone.
