(KAIR) -- A large hay field fire was reported Monday afternoon south of Effingham.
According to Atchison County Fire District Number Two Chief Kirk Kloepper, crews responded to a field five miles south of Effingham around 2:30.
Kloepper believes a hay swather caused a spark in the very dry field, which caused the fire.
He says it took five hours to contain the fire and attributes high winds as the reason behind the difficulty in containing it.
In the end, 50 acres were destroyed, which consisted mostly of hay ground, with some pasture.
Kloepper says its unknown at this point who owns the land.
Both the Valley Falls and Nortonville Fire Departments assisted in fighting the blaze.
