Atchison Sewers Now in Compliance with KDHE Mandates
01/21/2013

(KAIR) -- Atchison wastewater is now in compliance with mandates imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency and Kansas Department of Health and Environment months ahead of schedule.

The wastewater plant’s treatment process started getting filled with ultraviolet treatment in early December.

Utilities Director Mike Mathews says this type of treatment, voted on in mid-2012 by City Commissioners, works better and faster than chlorine.

The mandates required the plant to meet bacterial level requirements by July 1st.

However, they were able to meet that level within days after implantation.

Mathews says while people may not notice much of a difference, the environment will.
