(KAIR) -- The Atchison County District Courtroom was at full capacity Tuesday morning with area high school students for the annual County Government Day, sponsored by the Atchison American Legion.
At least 100 students from Atchison High School, ACCHS, and Maur Hill Mount Academy listened to a lecture from Norm Bowers, Local Road Engineer with the Kansas Accociation of Counties.
Bowers discussed the differences between different types of county government, as well as differences from municipal and district court in Kansas.
He also give a history lesson about how early homesteaders had their property marked.

Students then broke up into groups to shadow various elected officials and department heads.
Multiple groups even got a rare chance to witness District Court in session.
Following the session, which featured a shoplifting case, County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman told students about what cases are prosecuted in District Court, rather than municipal court.
He says this particular case was elevated from a simple municipal court case, largely due to a recent upward trend of shoplifting cases at the Atchison Wal-Mart.

After their shadowing, students concluded the day with lunch at the American Legion Post.
This is the 49th year the Legion has sponsored the event in the county.
