( KNZA )--A state grant will be sought for the construction of a handicapped accessible fishing bridge at the Hiawatha City Lake.
The city commission Monday evening gave Public Works Director Dave Grimm approval to apply for a $20,000 grant through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.
If awarded, the city would provide $20,000 in matching funds.
Grimm said efforts have been underway for some time now to build a bridge at the lake, and $16,000 has been donated to the city for the project.
The city was notified last week that its eligible for the grant.
Grimm said the grant application is due June 1st and the city would learn by August if it’s successful.
