Hiawatha High School’s basketball standout, Drake Woehlecke, signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Kansas Wesleyan University on Wednesday.
Woehlecke, a 5-11, 170-pound point guard who averages almost 10 points a game, has always wanted to play basketball at the highest level he can. He has committed himself to that goal throughout his high school career and has worked hard to prove himself to his coaches and teammates.
“There is a level of dedication an athlete must have in order to move up to college ball,” says high school coach Gordon Gunderson. “Drake is one of those kids that has reached that level and can have success at it.”Chris Fear, head coach of the Wesleyan Coyotes, recognized those same characteristics in Woehlecke.
“We liked what we saw in Drake,” he said. “He’s a well motivated team player who works hard and has totally committed himself to what he is doing.”
Woehlecke said he feels he has made a good choice in Wesleyan. Last Monday he visited the school and returned with a good feeling about the campus, his new teammates and his coach.
“I was nervous at first, but after meeting the team and getting to know them, I knew it would be a good fit for me and I felt right at home in that environment.” Woehlecke said.
Woehlecke said he will miss his former teammates and wanted to thank them, along with his former coaches Terry Reschke, Karl Kliewer Gunderson, for helping him meet his goals.
Woehlecke plans to study sports management at the University.
