Old US 77 Bridge Demolished
11/08/2012

( KMZA )--A blast of dynamite brought down the former U.S. 77 Highway bridge near Blue Rapids Wednesday afternoon.

U.S. 77 and K-9 Highways were closed temporarily while the implosion took place by employees with Chicago Explosives around 2 o’clock.

Only the structural steel on the old bridge over the Big Blue River fell.  The bridges piers will be removed after the structural steel is removed.

The new Highway 77 concrete span bridge, located  just south of the old bridge, opened recently to traffic.

Cleanup work for the old bridge removal should be completed in the next two weeks.

There is still some pavement striping, clean up and finishing work needed on the entire project.  Thus, there will still be some lane closures as crews complete the project work.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by late December.
