Thursday is Winter Weather Awareness Day
11/08/2012

While the weather outside isn’t exactly frightful yet, some Nebraskans may need a reminder that wind chills may plummet and snow fly one day soon.  Today (Thursday) is Winter Weather Awareness Day, according to meteorologist Jeff Johnson at the National Weather Service.  (play audio  :19   “each threat.”)
Parts of western Nebraska got a fluke snowstorm a few weeks ago, and Johnson says the time to prepare for the winter season is now.  (play audio  :21    “website of course.”)
Some of those items should include blankets, a flashlight, extra batteries, a radio, a shovel, and non-perishable food.
After this year’s prolonged drought, everyone’s wondering about the severity of the winter ahead.  Johnson says predictions are still inconclusive for the upcoming season.  (play audio   :17    “nothing significant.”)
The National Weather Service has more winter weather information on its website, weather-dot-gov.
