(KNZA)--Kansas lawmakers, during their now concluded latest session, approved legislation that, among other things, allows local school boards to decide whether or not to allow certain staff members to carry firearms.
The matter has been discussed extensively by the Board of Education for USD 430, addressed during their past two sessions.
Their latest session on Monday saw a decision reached regarding the issue, with guns not to be allowed on district property.
Doctor Steve Davies, Superintendent of the South Brown County Schools says, despite philosophy or politics, the issue ultimately came down to a matter of insurance.
Davies says the district's insurance provider notified them, saying they would not provide coverage if guns are allowed.
A polarizing national dialogue began regarding gun control following last December's elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, with the politicized issue carrying over to state legislature's, including Kansas.
