(KTNC) -- The Richardson County Sheriff’s Department is offering the public a chance to tour the county’s jail. Tours of the Richardson County Jail will be offered on three Sunday afternoons this month and next – January 19 and 26, and February 2, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. each day. Group tours will start every half-hour, with no reservations necessary.
Sheriff Randy Houser will be at the jail to answer questions and discuss features of the jail – which is the oldest operating jail in Nebraska.
Sheriff Houser says they’re offering the jail tours as a way to give people a chance to see the safety factors that have prompted discussion of a new jail. County Commissioners are considering turning the Armory on the west edge of Falls City into a new jail and law enforcement center.
Sheriff Houser says the inmates will be taken to another location in the Courthouse during the open houses, so those who tour the jail won’t come into contact with inmates. He also says an elevator is available in the Courthouse for those who have difficulty negotiating stairs.
