(KNZA)--The world of science comes alive Monday for students at Jackson Heights Middle School, as they are set to launch science experiments nearly 20 miles high, or around 100-thousand-feet, to a level of the atmosphere known as “near space.”
It was from that level that the world watched as daredevil Felix Baumgartner made his successful skydive to earth on October 14th.
While that well known event brings new attention to the student's work, Jackson Heights Middle School Technology Director Vern Andrews says the local effort began well before the space jump(Play Audio)
It was that experiment, Andrews says, that inspired the science department at Jackson Heights Middle school, to conduct their own(Play Audio)
Andrews says about 10 student designed experiments will be the focus of Monday morning's venture(Play Audio)
Fittingly, and appropriately, the student experiments are conducted at the same time as a full moon(Play Audio)
Andrews is encouraging the public to attend the event, beginning at 8:30 Monday morning, so long as weather allows.
The school is also accepting donations to help cover the cost of the opportunity, with businesses and individuals able to sponsor an experiment for a $100 donation.
