State Highway Commission Meets in Falls City
10/29/2012

(KTNC) - The Nebraska State Highway Commission held its October meeting in Falls City Friday morning.
The meeting included an update on ongoing and future road projects in southeast Nebraska, including the new Missouri River Bridge at Rulo.  District One Highway Engineer Thomas Goodbarn says that project is on schedule.  (play audio   :20)
A couple other local highway projects are also nearing completion, including reconstruction of Highway 75 from the Kansas State Line north to Auburn.  (play audio  :18)
Goodbarn explains the Highway 75 and Highway 73 projects were done on an emergency basis, after heavy traffic detoured from Interstate 29 during last summer’s Missouri River flooding caused excessive wear and tear on the roads.  (play audio   :41)
During the public comment portion of Friday’s meeting, several people asked the Highway Commission about the condition of Highway 73 from Falls City south to the Kansas State Line.
That roadway has what’s called an A-S-R concrete problem, which causes the concrete to deteriorate.  Goodbarn says repairs to that section of Highway 73 are now scheduled for the year after next.  (play audio  :25)
The A-S-R concrete problem is also affecting Highway 136 in Auburn, which is also to be repaired in 2014.
In addition to Highway 73, others asked what the Department of Roads could do to hard-surface the Falls City Airport Road, and the shoulders along Highway 159 between Rulo and Falls City.
