Voters in southeast Nebraska elected a new State Senator Tuesday. In the District One State Senate Race, with all precincts counted, Dan Watermeier won the election, by a 56-to-44 percent margin over Jerry Joy.
Final results show Watermeier with a majority of the votes in Johnson, Pawnee, and Otoe Counties, while Joy won the vote in Nemaha and Richardson County. The final, unofficial, vote tally was 8,669 votes for Watermeier and 6,834 for Joy.
Watermeier says he had a broad range of support from throughout the district. (play audio :20)
Watermeier is open-minded as to what committees he wants to serve on, and says the talents of other legislators and the needs of the district will determine a lot. (play audio :15)
Watermeier says he’ll be listening to constituents over the next couple months before the legislature convenes.
Watermeier will replace Lavon Heidemann, who could run for reelection due to term limits.
Heidemann will continue to serve, though, as he won a position on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. Heidemann defeated Mike Jones for the District 5 seat, 53-to-47-percent. Voters in Richardson, Pawnee, Nemaha, Johnson, and Otoe Counties favored Heidemann, while Gage County voters supported Jones.
