Survey Shows Modest Increase in Price of Traditional Thanksgiving Meal
Higher prices at the grocery store should not greatly affect the price of ingredients for this year’s traditional fall feast. The American Farm Bureau Federation conducts a Thanksgiving Dinner Price Survey each year.
Dave Miller is the director of research and commodity services for the Iowa Farm Bureau and says the cost of all the ingredients purchased is $49.48, up one-percent from a year ago. (play audio :23)
The price of grain is up about 25-percent from a year ago due to a drought stricken harvest, and many livestock producers reduced their inventory to save money. Miller says this will not have a huge impact on the cost a traditional Thanksgiving meal this year, but next year could be a different story. (play audio :19)
150 shoppers from 35 states took part in the American Farm Bureau’s annual Thanksgiving meal comparison.
The biggest price hike was seen in the price of turkey, up 66-cents. Miller says a family of 10 can enjoy the meal for about five-dollars a person.
