(KAIR) -- The City of Atchison is changing the way it provides its residential solid waste collection service.
Between now and next summer, service will evolve from a manual trash collection system to an automated system that will include single stream recycling.
Customers will receive flyers with their November utility bills detailing the upcoming changes.
The changes are the result of a study conducted by an outside consultant who recommended the City adopt a more efficient and cost effective collection system.
The automated system will reduce the number of employees required per truck from three to one and improve collection rates from 65 households per hour to over 100 homes per hour.
The resulting $185,000 in annual savings will be used to establish a secondary system for collection of recyclables.
The City will begin a trash cart pilot program of around 600 homes in early January.
Residences selected for the pilot will receive additional program information and a 96-gallon trash cart prior to implementation.
Automated service will be expanded based on the results of the pilot program and trash collection service is expected to be fully automated by next June.
Roll out of single stream recycling service should begin in May of next year.
