(KAIR) -- Several people were forced out of their homes overnight Friday following a fuel spill in McLouth.
McLouth fire and hazmat crews spent hours Saturday morning cleaning up after diesel fuel from the local BP station and spilled into a neighborhood.
An estimated 15 hundred gallons of diesel fuel ran from the station into neighbors backyards.
Jefferson County Emergency Manager Daryl Chess says as far as they know, gas distributors over-filled the tank and the relief valve popped.
According to KCTV5, Haag Oil Company, which owns the station, didn’t answer questions about the spill.
Chess said the spill is under investigation and believes the spill shouldn't have a lasting environmental impact.
Hazmat crews will monitor the area impacted for the next four or five days.
Then, the state will make a determination if any soil needs to be removed.
