(KLZA) -- The Auburn City Council this week approved on first reading an ordinance to allow permits to consume beer and wine on recreational real estate owned by the City. This would be similar to what Nebraska Game and Parks approved last year allowing people to bring alcohol to recreational facilities owned by the Game and Parks Commission. Mayor Scott Kudrna says the public will have an opportunity to express their thoughts on the proposal during the next two City Council meetings.
Kudrna says the City of Auburn will not get into the business of selling alcohol. Under the proposal those wanting to have alcohol on city property during an event would be required to apply for a permit, and it would need to be approved two weeks prior to the event. A number of details concerning the proposal still need to be worked out.
The Auburn Council gave favorable comment to a fund raising beer garden for Gary Leslie at Auburn Discount Liquor and the change in name for the liquor license for Shell Speedee Mart was given favorable comment.
During the reports from Department Heads, Councilman Tom Clark told the Council of the Auburn Volunteer Fire Departments need for a new aerial truck. The estimated cost for a used truck is $450-$700,000. Council members Tom Clark, Shawn Clark and Jeff Jeanerett who are associated with the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department requested the Board of Public Works look at loaning the City the funds to purchase a truck.
Mayor Kudrna says there are lots of questions to be answered about utilizing those funds to pay for a fire truck.
Fire Chief Randy Bennett told MSC news the current aerial truck is a 1974 model. The unit had had issues with the hydraulics and recently has developed transmission troubles.
