Horton Author Shares Her Book with Students

Vicki Stone, who authored the book "Steps and Stones", shared her book with a group of 1st graders at Horton Elementary last week!  Mrs. Stone donated the book to the school for the students to be able to check out.  Thanks for sharing your love of ready with the students of Horton Elementary!

South Brown County Headstart has a Special Visitor!

The students at the South Brown County Headstart program, run by NEK-CAP, got a special visitor this past week!  Josh White with Ag Partners brought his semi-truck to the school so they students could get an up close look at the tractor trailer.

Thanks to Josh for volunteering his time to visit the school and to all of the teachers of South Brown County for their work with our Kanzaland youth.

Doniphan West Kansas Youth Art Month Winners!!

Congratulations to Morgan McCauley (5th Grade) and Aliza Tracy(7th Grade) for being selected to represent Doniphan West Schools in the Kansas Youth Art Month exhibition! Morgan was awarded second place in the elementary category and received a ribbon and a prize package! The Youth Art Month exhibition was on display at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library through March 25th.

Nemaha Central Student wins State Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Tyler Nolte! Tyler is the Kansas State Champion Speller and will go on to compete at Nationals at the end of May. Tyler won with the word, gadzookery, and earned the trip to Nationals with the word, drumlin. Congratulations Tyler and Good Luck at Nationals!!

Hiawatha PTO Honors Teacher of the Month

We love honoring our teachers and staff! This award goes to Kindergarten teacher Mrs Pyle. Thank you for working with the littles and helping them in their first year of all-day school! We appreciate you!!

The Kansas Head Start Association Announces 2023 Awards

Several local residents were honored by the Kansas Head Start Association for their roles at NEK-CAP.  Local award winners include:

Congratulations Hiawatha Red Hawk Forensics Team

Congratulations to the Hiawatha Red Hawk Forensics team who took 3rd Place out of 15 teams Tuesday at the Horton High School Invitational.
 
 
Eli Hoschouer placed 2nd in Humorous Solo Acting (HSA) qualifying him for State Champs & State Festival. Eli also placed 6th in Original Oratory (OO)
 
Tatum Vaughan placed 3rd in Serious Solo Acting (SSA) qualifying her for State Champs & State Festival. Tatum also placed 4th in poetry qualifying her State Festival in that event.
 
Jacob Gallagher placed 5th in Extemporaneous Speech.
 
Lorenzo Sullivan placed 3rd in Informative Speech qualifying him for State Festival. 
 
Israel Ross placed 3rd in Prose qualifying him for State Festival. 
 
Tori Wist placed 4th in Prose qualifying her for State Festival. 
 

Local HCC Students Named to All Kansas Academic Team

Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, has named Claire Geiger (Robinson) and Derek Scheuerman (Severance) to the All-Kansas Academic Team for 2023.

Highland Community College (HCC) President Deborah Fox will join Geiger and Scheuerman in Junction City April 14, 2023. Kansas is one of 39 states participating in the All-State Academic Team program.

Claire Geiger earned an Associate of Arts (AA) degree from Highland Community College in the Fall of 2022. Claire is the daughter of Jack and Deborah Geiger. Claire transferred to Kanas State University and is now studying agricultural communications and journalism with a secondary major in natural resources and environmental sciences. She was a member of Scottie Prints Club, a student tutor at HCC, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Derek Scheuerman is currently studying game design. He previously earned an Associate degree in Applied Science (AAS), certificates for CompTIA A+, CompTIA Security+, and CompTIA Network+. He is the son of Marty and Teresa Scheuerman. Derek plans to transfer to Wichita State University. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the HCC esports team.

Holton FFA Member named 2023 NE District Star Farmer

Delaney New named 2023 NE District FFA Star Farmer!

Tonight she interviewed with a panel of judges to showcase her diversified livestock SAE. She has developed an outstanding program over the last four years. Later this spring she will interview against the other district winners for the honor of being named State Star Farmer.

Hiawatha Parks & Rec Install New Scoreboards at Bruning Park

The Hiawatha Parks and Rec department gave a shout out to there Hiawatha City Crews for installing the new scoreboards at Bruning Park.  The new scoreboards in Hiawatha have been a project that HP&R has been working on for the past couple of years.

Hiawatha Headliners Compete at Platte County

Congratulations

to the Hiawatha Headliners for competing in the 3A division at the Platte County Showcase of Excellence Show Choir Competition! The group had a full day of watching 18 other schools compete as well as having a clinic with one of the judges so that they can improve their show.

Also, a big congratulations to Israel Ross for receiving Best Male Vocalist!

Hiawatha Elementary PTO Names Staff of the Month

Let’s celebrate Sherri Williams Nelson! She is a paraprofessional in kindergarten, but you never know where you’ll find her. Today she helped out with lunch room duty. She also fills in for teachers as a substitute teacher. She is definitely an asset to HES! Thank you for all of your work with our kiddos!!!

Centralia Students participate at KidWind Challenge

Kalin and Kaylee of Centralia schools participated in the KidWind challenge in Manhattan. They were awarded the “Gearhead” award for having the coolest gear system! They were also the only team to score a perfect score on both the knowledge quiz and instant challenge. Congratulations!

Holton 7th Grade Scholars Bowl Team

The Holton 7th Grade Scholars Bowl Team recently compteted in the Big 7 League Tournament and left with a league championship title!  The team is coached by Mr. McBride.

Grant awarded for Centralia ballfield improvements

As the Centralia Ball Association begins planning for the upcoming season, the ball field will be in better condition thanks to a $1,000 grant award from the Glen J. Meyer Advisory Fund through the Nemaha County STEP Foundation. The grant award provided field maintenance equipment to rake and level out the field before every game.
