Holton High School had a pink out on October 8th. They collected donations, t-shirt orders and sponsor money that will go to a recipient that is battling cancer, locally. The team was blessed to raise around $7000 and will be donating to their retired Spanish teacher who had breast cancer. Amazing!!!
Nemaha Central Elementary and Middle School 2nd Graders have enjoyed listening to books read aloud by several guest readers. Mrs. Sudbeck, Mr. Desormiers, and Mr. Schnakenberg were gracious enough to volunteer their time to read to our students. We look forward to more special guest readers throughout the year!
First grade classrooms transformed into restaurants! The “chefs” were in charge of completing ten different challenges! To complete the challenges, students had to use math skills to answer addition problems within 20. The chefs did an outstanding job!
NCEMS enjoyed time with our FAB Families! The purpose is to give each student another constant adult contact throughout their years at NCEMS while also developing strong relationships with others in our school community!
Hiawatha Public School students in 7/8 STEM in the Real World class have been working on learning applications of microbes. This week, we had Amy Elliott from Amberwell Lab Services come and help us with an experiment. Students had four different samples of food, two which had sat out all night. Amy taught students how to culture bacteria, differences in agar plates and identifying bacteria forms once it grew. She even had slides of our bacteria to look at under a microscope. Thanks Amy!
USD 115 Nemaha Central received a $4,000 grant distribution from the CNB/CNB
Custody/Invisor “Underprivileged Children Fund” to assist children in need at the school. Some
of the items purchased through the grant were school supplies, winter gear, snack milk, and bags
of food for the weekend. Krista Stallbaumer, NCEMS Student-Family Liaison, shared the
importance of filling tummies with nutritious food and how the bags are packed with the
assistance from the FFA and FCCLA clubs. Non-profit organizations in Nemaha County who
serve underprivileged children are encouraged to apply for funding at www.nemahastep.org.

HMS Flight & Space classes had a great time on Friday at the Hiawatha Airport. Local pilot, Matt Tietjens, met with us to show us his plane, answer questions about aviation, and allow us to watch a flight demonstration. Students were able to see how the different parts of the plane impacted flight. The students had a great time! — at Hiawatha Public Schools-USD 415.
The fourth grade students and teachers headed to Havensville for the 40th and final Living History Day. The fourth graders were thrilled to learn about the many different things that people did in everyday life in the past.
There were many activities that the students could participate in. Some of these included weaving, making tortillas, churning butter, candle dipping, learning about native Kansas animals, and grinding coffee beans. The classes split into groups of four or five in order to do more activities.
Fourth grader, Colt McKee stated, “My favorite part was either the candle making or the animals. I also liked playing at the park.”
“Petting the bunnies was fun,” Ainsley Dalinghaus commented. “We fed them but we couldn’t give them cucumbers, because they have too much water, so we gave them carrots, broccoli, and lettuce instead.”
Overall, the fourth graders enjoyed the trip and “Living History.” Their favorite activities were candle dipping and petting the animals. It was a fun experience and the fourth graders learned a lot about history.
