Pony Express Barn & Museum Invites You to Visit in 2026

Ten to fifteen miles. That’s how far one Pony Express horse would run before the rider switched to a fresh one.
It wasn’t one horse carrying the mail coast to coast. It was a relay of tough, fast mounts, swapped out in minutes while the rider grabbed the next horse and kept the mochila moving.
If you want to understand the Pony Express, start where the horses were changed. Fast mail meant fresh horses, and Marysville was one of the stops that made that possible. The stone barn downtown was leased as a Pony Express livery stable in 1860, and it still stands.
Start at the Pony Express Barn & Museum, then follow the Pony Express audio tour and hear the story tied to the places you can still see today. Call 785-879-4093 and use stops #300-#318 for the Pony Express.

Seneca Free Library New Year Message

Looking for a good Existential Crisis?
There are only a few days left in 2025.
Did you accomplish everything you meant to accomplish this year?
How'd those New Year's Resolutions pan out?
Have you stepped on a scale since the start of December?
Now... Stop. Breathe. Let Go. Unplug.
Life is not a race. There's no gold medal for beating yourself up or being critical of yourself. You are the best you that you can be right here, right now, and you don't owe anybody anything different. If you see areas where you can work to improve your health, your well-being, your organization, or whatever you think needs to change... Great! Make a plan. Stoke that inner fire. Be the change you want to see. But do it for yourself. Other people's opinions, expectations, demands, etc. don't matter. But what you can do for yourself to feel better, think more clearly, process emotions easier, those things? Absolutely worth it. Which tracks, because YOU are worth it. You are worthy of all the love and support, all the understanding and compassion, all the grace and forgiveness that you have poured into others. So give it to yourself first, and let it overflow from you to others rather than try and pour out of an empty cup.

Nemaha Central Kindergarteners Made Christmas Gifts This Year for Parents

The Nemaha Central Kindergarteners were so excited about their special gifts for their parents this year! They made wood snowmen the height of each of them. The students added the finishing touches to complete them. We want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Koch and Company for donating the wood for this project! It wouldn’t have been possible without their generosity! We hope that the parents loved them as much as the students do.

Sabetha Elementary Students Learn About Local Career Options

Thank you to Sabetha Elementary School for hosting Career Exploration Day! AHRS estimator, Jay Herrmann, had a great time sharing insights about the many different career opportunities at AHRS Construction. He loved connecting with the students and being part of such a great event!
We are hopeful for lots of new hires in the next 8-12 years! ????

Also, thanks to Bern-Sabetha Vet Clinic, Dr. Detweiler who donated his time at the Sabetha Elementary School Career Exploration day. He talked about veterinary medicine to 14 different groups totaling around 360 students! I think they had a great time learning about all the cool stuff Dr. Detweiler gets to do on a daily basis!

One Marysville Thanks the Christmas Committee for Another Great Year

We're nuts about our Christmas Committee. Ricci Beikman, Max Blaske, Renae Bruna, Katy Jeter, Shelby Matson, Marsha Schell and Sonja Stoll are the team behind Marysville’s Christmas season.
These folks are responsible for the big picture and the details: creating and designing Christmas Wonderland, planning and organizing A Hometown Christmas, Baking With Mrs. Claus & Reindeer Games, the Christmas Wonderland Sing-A-Long Festival and everything in between. They build the calendar, weave retail events into the season and manage the behind-the-scenes work that keeps it all moving. They also coordinate Santa’s schedule from start to finish, confirming where he needs to be, when he needs to arrive and what each stop requires so Santa is exactly where Marysville expects him to be all season long.
Call it Christmas magic if you want… we call it a committee full of elves who get things done.

Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Looks Back and Forward to 2026

As we look forward to a new year and new opportunities, we have to reflect on just how very far we have come over the past few years. I am in awe of the commitment of our staff and what they have been able to accomplish. We are so very grateful to our community, our patients, and their families who have supported us in our chaos during construction and who trust us with their care every day.
Success and growth do not happen without challenges. Without exception, our staff has risen to the occasion. We will continue our work to advance quality, patient and staff safety initiates, strengthen our patient experience efforts, and expand access to specialty services close to home. Each of these efforts reflect the commitment of our team and our shared mission to provide personalized, compassionate care.
This past year we experienced tremendous growth in our outreach efforts throughout our communities. From community education events to school partnerships, wellness programs, emergency preparedness efforts, and charitable initiatives. Our staff once again demonstrated how deeply they care about the wellbeing of the communities we serve. These moments remind us that health care extends far beyond the walls of our facilities—it lives in the relationships we build and the trust we nurture.
As we look ahead to the coming year, we are excited to continue to build on this momentum. Our goals include expanding access to essential services, advancing technology and care capabilities, supporting our staff’s professional growth, and strengthening our connection to patients and families. With the completion of our construction project, we are entering this new year with refreshed space and renewed enthusiasm for the work ahead.
To our staff: thank you for your dedication, resilience, and heart. To our community: thank you for your trust and support. Together, we look forward to another year of growth, service, and success at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital and Seneca Family Practice.

EMS Experienced An Unexpected and Meaningful Act of Kindness

This week, while enjoying lunch at a local restaurant here in Pottawatomie County, our EMS crews experienced an unexpected and meaningful act of kindness. As they prepared to leave, they learned that another patron had quietly paid for their meal.
This gesture was not expected, nor is it something our crews ever feel entitled to—but it truly brightened their day and served as a powerful reminder that EMS is supported and appreciated within our community.
Acts like this, no matter how small they may seem, have a lasting impact on the men and women who serve our county every day. We want to extend a sincere thank you to the individual who made this gesture possible. Your kindness did not go unnoticed and was deeply appreciated by our team.

Nemaha Valley Community Hospital is pleased to announce two important leadership appointments that reflect our continued organizational growth and ongoing commitment to excellence. Curt Sudbeck has been named Chief Operating Officer (COO), and Courtney Schmelzle will serve as the new HIPAA Privacy Officer.
These updates strengthen our operational structure as NVCH continues expanding services, partnerships, and patient volume.
In his new role, Curt will take on additional administrative responsibilities to support hospital operations and service line development. His leadership will help enhance efficiency, coordinate departmental initiatives, and support our strategic growth. This dedicated COO position is essential as NVCH experiences increased demand and takes on more complex projects and service expansions.
Courtney will continue her work in community outreach and with the Nemaha Valley Health Care Foundation while also leading our privacy program. As HIPAA Privacy Officer, she will oversee HIPAA compliance efforts, guide staff education, and help ensure the protection of patient information across the organization. With the rapid evolution of healthcare privacy regulations, this role is especially important in maintaining patient trust and meeting regulatory standards.
NVCH has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, and these leadership roles are key to supporting our staff, strengthening our operations, and preserving our commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care. Beta Sigma Phi Gives Back

We were a chapter of 17 women in Nortonville–Winchester who considered each other more than friends — we were sisters. Beta Sigma Phi was founded in 1931 as an international women’s organization built on friendship, service, and personal growth. Chapters like ours existed all over the world, each one bringing women together to support their communities in meaningful, heartfelt ways.
Giving back was the heart of who we were.
Our Nortonville–Winchester chapter worked year-round to support our local communities through:
• Scholarships for Jefferson County students
• Donations to the Nortonville and Winchester libraries
• Funding summer swimming lessons
• Assisting families in need
• Supporting local organizations and special projects
• Hosting treasured events like the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Mother–Daughter Banquet
And of course…
The Beta Sigma Phi Holiday Open House!
For 24 years, this event grew bigger, brighter, and more joyful — not because of us, but because of YOU. Our incredible vendors, shoppers, families, volunteers, and community members were the reason this tradition continued to thrive.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for supporting this event, supporting our chapter, and supporting each other. We couldn’t wait to welcome everyone for a day filled with small-town charm, holiday cheer, beautiful handmade goods, delicious treats, and all the magic our community brought together.

I picked this class because history has always been my favorite subject and because I love how 6th grade students are learning how the middle school works and they are getting more mature. I hope that by interning there, I will get to help them prepare for seventh grade next year.

Hiawatha Student Bri Guilliams Gains Work Experiance

My name is Bri Guilliams, Hiawatha High School Student. For my work experience, I go to Hiawatha Elementary School. At the elementary school, I job shadow a first-grade teacher named Erin Sudbeck. I chose her because she's an amazing teacher and she taught me when I was in first grade. I picked this for my work experience because I wanted to try it out to see if being a teacher is something I might want to do after high school. I also chose this because I love teaching the little first graders and helping them learn.
I’ve learned a lot from my work experience. For example, I’ve learned how each of Mrs. Sudbeck's first graders learns and what teaching methods work best to ensure that each of them is learning something, even when they learn at different speeds. I have also learned what keeps them interested and engaged in what they are doing. Overall, I am very grateful for the opportunity to do this and to work with such an amazing teacher and group of kids.

Marysville Santa Christmas Parade

The Marysville Santa’s Christmas Parade steps off this Saturday at 2 p.m., bringing that classic small-town lineup of floats, elves and excited kids lining Broadway. We’ve been digging through photos from parades past, and one thing is clear: Santa has made quite an entrance over the years when he comes to Marysville.
He’s arrived in all kinds of ways—from fire trucks to stagecoaches to snowmobiles. How do you think he’ll make his grand entrance this year?

Onaga Historical Museum Welcomes Student Helpers!

What a wonderful group of junior high students! This is only a sampling of the work accomplished by a few of the group yesterday at the Onaga Historical Museum. Talkee about "horsepower", I would guess a 1000 pounds of items were moved yesterday in about 40 minutes into their "new" spots in the Museum. There were two ladies who sorted all of the children's books, getting them ready for Santa's visit on December 14. Thank you to their teachers, Mrs. Boswell and Mr. Poell, for bringing the students to help out.
We will see you on more Wednesdays!.

The winning class gets to hold the "Spirit Stick" until the next pep rally where they get a chance to keep the prize or pass it on to the next class with the biggest cheer.

Seneca Free Library Celebrates National Mutt Day

Tuesday, December 2, is National Mutt Day. Sure, you can spend hundreds of dollars or more on a purebred pup with papers and pedigrees, then hope that whatever chronic condition regularly follows that breed doesn't hit your particular pooch (neurosis, volatility, territorial tendencies, hip dysplacia, breathing disorders, puppy mill problems, etc.), or you can check out the original pound puppy! A mutt may not be guaranteed to avoid all of those problems, but their odds are significantly better, especially where behavioral and psychological tendencies are concerned. Sadly, mutts are often more susceptible to abandonment and can regularly be found in shelters or at the pound. But what a breeder or mill runner couldn't put a price tag on for profit is often an invaluable treasure to the family that takes them in.

Sabetha Hospital Welcomes New COO

Sabetha Community Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Jennifer Ploeger as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). Ploeger, a familiar and respected figure within the hospital and the community, steps into this leadership role with a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the hospital's mission.
Ploeger most recently served as the hospital's Communication and Community Outreach Coordinator, where she played a pivotal role in strengthening the hospital's connection with the community and enhancing its public presence.
This appointment marks a return to hospital administration for Ploeger, who has a long history of service to Sabetha Community Hospital. She first began her career at the hospital as a social worker, dedicating her skills to providing compassionate care and support to patients and their families. After a period away, during which she gained valuable experience as the Clinic Manager at Hiawatha Community Hospital, she returned to Sabetha Community Hospital. Upon her return, she served in home health and hospice, eventually rising to the position of Director, where she demonstrated her leadership abilities and dedication to patient-centered care.
"We are thrilled to welcome Jennifer into this new leadership position," said Garrett Colglazier, CEO. "Her deep understanding of our organization, her diverse experience in various departments, and her passion for serving the Sabetha community make her the ideal person to lead our operational efforts. We are confident that she will continue to be an invaluable asset to our team and our community."

Hiawatha Student Gains Experiance in Chosen Field

Health Care Work Experience Student Spotlight
My name is Saige Stover. For my WBL experience, I go to Amberwell Hiawatha. At Amberwell, I shadow all departments. I chose to go to the hospital to see if this is what I want to do post high school. Being able to have these experiences helps me believe that I want to become a Radiology Technician. I have always been interested in the medical field, but was not entirely sure about what I wanted to do until I had these opportunities. Seeing all the different things you can see in radiology and the different information you can learn from one scan is very interesting to me, and I can't wait to learn more about it. This experience is helping me prepare for my post high school life. I'm so thankful for this opportunity and cannot wait to continue my education and pursue my dream of becoming a Radiology Technician.
