William C. Bill Kanaly, 77, of Topeka, formerly of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016.

He was born June 14, 1939, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the son of Robert Kanaly and Myrtle (Hansen) Larabee.

Bill was employed by the City of Hiawatha Public Works for 36 years, first in the Street Department and later as a Foreman for the Water Department. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, of Topeka.

Bill is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Kanaly; 2 daughters, Terri Pritchett (Ron), and Penny Hartley; 5 grandchildren, Mitch Romine (Kristina), Jarad Romine (Paige), Brandon Hartley (Kim), Kelby Rosenberger, Schuyler Rosenberger, and 6 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 S.W. 6th Avenue, Topeka. Cremation will follow the ceremony. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Sharon L. Belair, Kno-Key-Shuck-Kwe, 49, of Delia, died Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

She was born July 12, 1967, in Topeka, the daughter of Albert Francis Masqua and Evelyn Jackson.

Sharon was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Drum Religion.

She was a homemaker.

Sharon was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth F. Belair and her aunt, Roberta Jackson.

Survivors include her spouse, Virgil Shopteese, Jr., of the home; Her mother and step-father, Evelyn and Rusty Seymour, Topeka; a son, Albert Francis Belair, Manhattan; two daughters, Sarah Jane Hurt, Topeka and Theresa Ann Belair, of the home; three sisters, Stephanie Belair, Topeka, Deanna Roberts, Oklahoma, and Marlena Jordan, Mayetta; a step-sister, Tricia Seymour, Topeka; one brother, Joseph Seymour, Denver, CO; a step-brother, Allan Seymour, Topeka; four granddaughters, Louisa Reyna, Octavia Hurt, Liza Frances Belair and Dena Rochelle Jones, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Michelle Belair.

Sharon will lie in state until 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where family and friends will meet from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. A supper will be held Wednesday evening at the Dance Ground west of Mayetta. Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Jessepe Cemetery on the Kickapoo Reservation at Horton. Minnie Belle Gorden, 89, Oskaloosa, formerly of Winchester, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at her home.

She was born Nov. 25, 1926, at Winchester, the daughter of Albert J. and Irene McMurtry White. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1944.

Minnie Belle taught in Jefferson County Rural Schools from 1944-1956. She had received her Teacher Certification through the University of Kansas. She had worked at the Office of the Registrar at KU. She and her husband, Don, had farmed south of Boyle. When she retired, she had been working at Sedlak Insurance and Real Estate in Winchester.

Minnie Belle was a life-long member of the Winchester Reformed Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship at the church and the Winchester YWCA.

She married Donald Bruce Gorden, May 18, 1956, at Winchester, and this year they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Boyd, Gene and Royden White; and two sisters, Hazel Sass and Ruth Bussell.

Survivors include her husband, Don, of the home; her son, David (Lisa) Gorden, Winchester; her daughter, Beth (George) Ricketts, Ozawkie; six grandchildren, Debbie Sparks, Jacob and Elyssa Gorden, and Caleb, Dalton, and Trever Ricketts; and three great-grandchildren, Keegan and Kamryn Sparks, and Aaiden Ricketts.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016,  at the Winchester Reformed Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery at Winchester. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Thelma M. Ziegler was born in Hiawatha, May 29, 1930, one of three children born to Roy and Pearl Molt Moll and has lived all of her life in Northeast Kansas.  

She grew up on a farm near Robinson and attended Prairie Springs country school.  Before she married, Thelma work for Prieb’s Egg Plant in Hiawatha.  After her marriage, she worked at Hallmark, and babysat for many families in the area.

Thelma died Friday morning, October 28, 2016, at Maple Heights Nursing Home where she had been a resident about two years.

She and her husband enjoyed camping and traveling.  Thelma even though she was very hard of hearing, she always enjoyed carrying on a conversation, had a great personality, was fun to be around, a bit ornery at times, and very creative.  Thelma enjoyed her home, and although she did not drive…she did not let that stop her and walked where ever she wanted to go.

She married Elvin Ziegler, September 5, 1953, at Hiawatha.  They made Tonganoxie/Jefferson County area their home until his death July 1, 1981, when one of the caves he was working in at Atchison collapsed and killed him.  After his death, she moved to Hiawatha to make her home.  

Thelma was also preceded in death by her parents; and a brother Clarence Moll.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins; her sister Emma Middendorf of Sabetha; a good friend to Thelma was the Toby Melster family of Hiawatha; Jim Hossfeld family of Holton.

Services are planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Shane Spangler officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.

Morris Charles Miller, 80, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016.Morris was born on September 12, 1936 in Wathena, Kansas to Leo P. & Dorothy Marie (Boeh) Miller.

He was of the Catholic faith. Morris farmed & worked as a mechanic. He served in the U.S. Navy.Morris married Ruth Anne Miller on June 28, 1958. She preceded him in death on November 19, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents, brother, Omer Miller & a sister, Ruthie Whistler.

Darlene was born on Oct. 16, 1930 in Atchison KS the daughter of Millard J. and Letha M. (Kelsay) Overton. She had worked for Electrica Manufacturing from 1953-1955, as a clerk at the former Pamida from 1970-1993, as a Green Thumb worker for 5 years, and her last place of work was at Bekin’s Moving and Storage, Atchison retiring in 2013. Darlene was a member of St. Benedict’s Church, the Little Flower Circle, the Meadowlark Club, was a former Den-Mother for Cub Scouts, member of TOPS, and enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, traveling and especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Darlene was married to Leslie Eylar on Aug, 23, 1947. Mr. Eylar preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1995. Survivors include two sons, Roger K. Eylar, Easton, KS, Martin J. Eylar, Atchison KS., a daughter, Pamela S. Goodman, Atchison, KS., eight grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Her parents, husband Leslie, infant son- Raymond, infant daughter- Linda, two brothers, James and Gerald Overton preceded her in death.

Jennie Noreen Maschewski, 98, formerly of Fairview, Kansas passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.
 
Noreen was born in Fairview, Kansas on August 22, 1918 to Frederick and Jennie (Cameron) Kopp.  She graduated from Fairview High School with the class of 1936.
 
Noreen was a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America. She attended the Delaware Baptist Church in Fairview where she served as deaconess.  She also served as secretary of the American Baptist Women.  Jennie was also a member of the Quindecam Club.
 
She is preceded in death by her grand-daughter, Jennie Ann-Doolittle on December 2, 1989; a grandson, Matthew Griffin on March 21, 2009; and a great-granddaughter, Siobahn Doolittle, who died in infancy.

Julia Aerts, 95, of Falls City, NE passed away on October 25, 2016. She was born to the late Leo and Frances (Kramer) Hilger on May 7, 1921 at Cedar Rapids, NE.

Julia married Leo Aerts on November 23, 1943 at David City, NE. He later passed away on October 4, 2009.

Julia was raised in Butler County on a farm. When married the couple established their home on a farm near David City while he worked on the family farm and then she moved into David City in 1945 when her husband left for the war. Throughout her life she painted and finished numerous homes and offices. She later retired in 1991. She then moved to Falls City in April of 2011.  She enjoyed gardening, working on puzzles, and playing cards. She was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Altar Society, Past President of the Parish Council of Catholic Women of David City, NE.

Julia is survived by sons, David Aerts of Kansas City, MO; Dr. Richard Aerts and his wife Linden of Cedar Rapids, IA; daughters, Carol Heineman of Falls City, Kathleen Davis and her husband John of Auburn, NE; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers; Paul Hilger, Alfred Hilger Sr., Arnold Hilger, Leo “Bud” Hilger Jr., and son-in-law James Heineman.

Loren was born January 30, 1935 in Seneca, Kansas the son of George E. and Josephine Lueb Becker.  He attended St. Peter’s and Paul Catholic Elementary School and graduated from St. Peter’s and Paul Catholic High School in Seneca.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force from May 1955 until his honorable discharge in May 1960. Serving as a mechanic on the B52 Bomber.

Loren was employed as a technician for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for thirty years retiring in 1990.

Loren was a member of the catholic faith.  He was a member of V.F.W. Post #1175 and the Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion both in Atchison, Kansas.

He and Betty Medsker were united in marriage on March 15, 1986 in Atchison, Kansas.  Mrs. Becker preceded him in death on January 1, 2013.

Survivors include two step-daughters, Sandy (Larry) Gilliland, Easton, KS; Pat Goodman, Leavenworth, KS; a sister, Norma G. Quinlan, Seneca, KS; three step-grandchildren, Darren (Debbie) Gilliland, Robert (Marie) Gilliland, Josh (Jill) Goodman, and four great step-grandchildren, Courtney Goodman, Logan Goodman, Erin Gilliland, and Kerry Gilliland.

Bobbie Jean (Austin) Humphrey, 82, of Lee Summit, Missouri was born on May 16, 1934, in Stollings, West Virginia to Robert and Jessie Marie (Boyd) Austin.  She attended school in Logan, West Virginia graduating from Logan High School with the class of 1954.  On April 12, 1958, Bobbie was united in marriage to Leroy Humphrey at the First Christian Church in Omaha, Nebraska.  To this union three children, Dan, Sheri, and Cindy were born.  The couple lived and raised their family in Omaha where early in her marriage; Bobbie worked for H & H Car dealership before becoming a full time stay at home mother.  Bobbie loved watching TV and was an avid weather watcher.  She spent years journaling in a daily notepad.  Bobbie was also a great cook who loved to bake.  She spent many hours cheering on her Nebraska Husker and West Virginia Mountaineer football teams.  Above everything, Bobbie loved her family.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.  Bobbie passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at the John Knox Village in Lee Summit, Missouri having reached the earthly age of eighty-two years, five months, and nine days.

Bobbie is survived by her loving husband Leroy Humphrey of Kansas City; children: Dan Humphrey of Florida; Sheri McMahon and her husband Jeff of Prairie Village, KS; Cindy Parrott and her husband Aaron of Lenexa, KS; grandchildren: Chris, Katie, Anna and Heather Humphrey, Ashley and Alexis Parrott, and Delaney McMahon; a brother Charles Austin of Charleston, WV; sisters-in-law: Helyne Crawford of Omaha, NE; Babs Lovercheck of Council Bluffs, IA; Shirley Humphrey of Omaha, NE; and many other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Myla (Norman) Witten and Mary Lou Poro, sister-in-law Isabelle Austin, and brothers-in-law: Russ Crawford, George Lovercheck, and Kenneth Humphrey.

Norvalynn “Lynn” Reed, 68, of Falls City, NE, passed away October 25, 2016 at Falls City. She was born December 22, 1947 at Falls City to the late Norval “Bus” and Lillian (Wulf) Jones.

Lynn was raised at Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1966, then attending University of Nebraska. She then graduated from Barber College at Lincoln and was the first licensed female barber in the state of Nebraska. She cut hair in Lincoln for a few years until becoming a civilian contractor for the Moral, Welfare and Recreation of the Department of the Navy, working on several military bases following her husband as he served in the Navy. She worked in that capacity for 27 years until she retired in 2002. She moved back to Falls City in 2000. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ at Falls City.

Lynn is survived by her daughters, London West and her husband Shawn of Falls City, Lacee Adams and her husband Joshua of Virginia Beach, VA, sister, Rose Marie Rastovski and her husband Edward of Wahoo, NE, grandchildren, Kaitlin and Tyler West, Tony Rabey, Nevada, Rome & Tommy West, Nathan Adams, Lillian West. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son in infancy.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Reverend Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Allen Jay Hallauer, 82, of Horton, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on October 25, 2016.

He was born on May 13, 1934 in Brown County, the son of Roy Virgil and Mabel Fern (Bohnenkemper) Hallauer. Al grew up in Horton and was a 1952 graduate of Horton High School. Al married Donna L. Schuetz at Miami, Oklahoma on December 13, 1973.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of the home. He is also survived by his brothers, Arnel (Jan) Hallauer of Ames, Iowa, Gene (Brenda) Hallauer of Manhattan, Kansas and Virgil (Anna Jo) Hallauer of Robinson, Kansas; sister, June Schlodder of Denison, Kansas. Al is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Lois Winterscheidt of Cushing, Oklahoma and Donna Knudson of Horton, Kansas.

Al served in the Navy from 1953 to 1961. As a Seabee, he was stationed at Adak, Alaska Naval Station and spent time stationed overseas in Japan.

Upon his discharge from the service, Al returned to Horton, where he continued to "run" a dozer. Among others, he worked for Dallas Kurtz, Ideker Construction and Amino Brothers in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a long time member of the Heavy Equipment Operators Union Local #101.

Al played baseball, football and basketball through high school. Upon his return to Horton, he continued sports by playing on local town teams for a number of years. Families make memories and Al's family has made lots of good memories over the years. He was a devoted and loving husband, brother and uncle to his family. He will be both missed and remembered fondly.

John Henry Scoggins, 77, of McAlester, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

He was born on July 28, 1939 in McAlester, Oklahoma the son of Paul and Ruby Williams Scoggins.

John graduated from McAlester High School in 1957 and then enlisted with the U.S. Army Air Force and served with the strategic air command in Vietnam. He worked for the KATY Railroad as a chief crew dispatcher until he retired. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in McAlester, Oklahoma and transferred his membership to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Independence, Missouri.

On April 6, 1962 he married Vivian Brummett. She preceded him in death on May 1, 2001.

Survivors include, three sons, John Paul (Lori) Scoggins of Wamego, Kansas, Jean (Jodi) Scoggins of Kansas City, Missouri and Fleet (Barbara) Scoggins of Muscotah, Kansas; one brother, Jean P. Scoggins of McAlester, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Wyatt (Katie) Scoggins, Sydney Scoggins, Lane Scoggins, Tess Scoggins and Evan Scoggins.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. Burial will be at the North Town Cemetery in McAlester, Oklahoma.

Harry C. “Kit” Beatty, 90, passed away Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Kit enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17, and served our country in World War II. He entered active duty August 15, 1944. In January of 1945, he was assigned to Company G, 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, and 2nd Armored Division in Europe. While fighting in Germany, he was captured by German Army troops on April 14, 1945. Kit was liberated by American forces on May 3, 1945, five days before Victory in Europe. He was honorably discharged at Fort Meade, Maryland on May 8, 1946.

Kit took advantage of the G.I. Bill by continuing his education in Philadelphia and at the University of Houston, majoring in mechanical engineering. He moved to Wichita, KS and worked for Boeing.   

Kit married Margaret Joan McClintick in 1951 and they raised two children, Jim and Stacy. They later divorced.

He moved to Topeka in the early 1960s and was employed in engineering design and equipment maintenance at Seymour Foods and Essex Wire. He married Mary Mason Anschutz on February 19, 1972. Kit used his experience and talents to transition into self-employment, working for more than 25 years as “Kit Beatty, The Fix-It Man.”

Kit was a witty man with an amazing sense of humor. He enjoyed several skills and hobbies in his life including hand-balancing, fencing, hunting, fishing, cooking, playing light jazz piano, and chess. He was president of Topeka Chess Club for many years.

On September 29, 2014, Kit and Mary moved to the Apostolic Christian North Village in Sabetha, Kansas. Just a few months later, due to health issues, Kit moved to the Apostolic Christian Nursing Home.

Kit especially enjoyed two recent occasions in his life: an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., and the presentation to him of a POW medal on his 90th birthday by U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.

Kit is survived by his wife, Mary; brother, Charles “Duke” Beatty of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; son, Jim (Barb) Beatty of Lenexa, KS; daughter, Stacia (Jeff) Runnels of Lebanon, MO; grandchildren, Kristine Beatty, Aaron Beatty, Marie (John) Hernandez, and Sarah (Matt) Bowmaker; and five great grandchildren.

It was Kit’s wish to be cremated. Memorial service will be Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to service time. Inurnment will be made at a later date in time at the Albany Cemetery.

Margaret Ann Pullen was born on March 24th, 1933 and passed away September 15th, 20016 in Arvada, CO.

Local survivors are her daughter, Stephanie (Dr. Brad) Farr, Horton.

Grandchildren, Heather (Drew Vernon), Whitney Farr, Nicole (Jeremy) Dolisi , Robinson, Zach (Sammi) Farr and Sarah Farr, Horton .

Margaret Ann was married to Mack Pullen on September 8th, 1956 in Denver CO. He survives of the home.

Barbara Joan Flor Antholz Kennedy

Born July 5, 1926 Valley Nebraska and passed away October 17, 2016 Brownville, Nebraska.

Barbara’s parents were Willard Craig Flor and Ruie Berniece (Campbell) Flor of Valley, Nebraska. Barbara attended primary school at Rural School Douglas County #22 and high school at Valley High School, graduating in 1944.  She then attended Colorado Woman’s College from 1944 to 1946. She also attended Creighton University and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Barbara married Ralph Henry Antholz in 1949. Son Ralph was born of the union in 1950.  Ralph Sr. passed away from polio in 1952.  Barbara and Clay Kennedy were married September 6, 1953. Clay passed away December 11, 2014. Clay and Barbara had celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Barbara was a farmer’s wife for those 61 years. She graded and sold apples and sold seed corn. She cooked for pickers and other workers on the farm while raising 4 children;

Barbara was a 60+ year member of the Daughter of the American Revolution serving as Regent several times, a 60+ member of P.E.O. Chapter AU, Peru serving as President several times as well as other offices, a 50+ year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was a charter member of the Brownville Historical Society, was a 44 year member of Tuesday Literary Club, and a member of the Auxiliary of Gideons International. Barbara taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years. She also taught knitting and other skills with 4H.   

Barbara was an avid reader, knitter, seamstress, and painter. She loved flowers especially iris. Barbara sewed blankets for each grandchild and made special Christmas stockings for each of them. She loved her family deeply and was involved in as many family activities as possible.  

She is preceded in death by her parents Willard and Ruie Flor, husband Clay, son Ralph, a brother John Flor, and her sister Betty Webb. She is survived by daughter Nancy Wheeler and husband Steve, Brownville, daughter Linda Lueders and husband Ken, Albuquerque New Mexico, son Stephen Kennedy and wife Chris, Brownville. 7 grandchildren; Sarah and husband Mike Roehlk, Durango, CO, Thomas Wheeler, Omaha, Matt and wife Lauren Lueders, Sanford, NC, Stephanie Wheeler, Lincoln, David Wheeler and fiancé Azalia Pruitt, Omaha, Andrew Kennedy, Brownville, and Elijah and wife Myranda Kennedy, Lincoln, along with 3 great grandchildren; Kaia Roehlk, Scout Roehlk, and Carter Kennedy.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28, 2016, at the Peru Community Church in Peru, Nebraska with Pastors Ray & Becky Girard officiating.

Patsy A. Frommer, 76, Valley Falls, died unexpectedly, Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, at her home.

She was born Jan. 27, 1940, at Thurston, NE, the daughter of Seth Thomas Blanchard and Mabel Emma Wilson Allen. She graduated from Valley Falls High School.

Patsy retired from the United States Department of Agriculture Regional Office in Topeka. She had worked at Frank’s Pharmacy and had been the Valley Falls Pool Manager. Most recently, she was working at the Delaware Township Library in Valley Falls. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She married James H. Frommer, Nov. 29, 1958, at Valley Falls. He died June 27, 2007. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jim Grollmes; six brothers, John, Dick, Donald, Lloyd, Harold and Roy Allen; and two sisters, Doris Moore and June Brown.

Survivors include her son, Tony (Lisa) Frommer, Denison; her daughter, Lori Grollmes, Valley Falls; a brother, Tom Allen, Valley Falls; three sisters, Eunice Osburn, Cathedral City, CA, and Lois Kientz and Evelyn Allen, both of Valley Falls; four grandchildren, Klinton (Julie), Danielle, and Britten Grollmes, and Melissa Aiken; and five great-grandchildren, Aliyah Taylor, Karson and Owen Grollmes, and Dalton and Gavin Burden.

Mya Jae Young passed peacefully in the arms of our Savior on Sunday, October 16, 2016 in Topeka, Kansas. She lost her life after a brief illness.

Mya brought much joy and happiness to everyone in her seven months of life. She will be deeply missed. Her parents have chosen to donate her organs to give the gift of life to others. The family requests to honor her life as a little hero.

She is preceded in death by her great grand-parents, Donald and Charlotta Burdick, and Leo Wiltz and Arleta Wenger.

Opal Irene Adams, 89, of Centralia, KS, formerly of Holton and Corning, KS passed away Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Eastridge Nursing Home. She was born August 26, 1927 in Goff, KS the daughter of Everton and Hulda (Bareiss) Bell.

Opal graduated from Goff High School in 1945. She had lived in Corning for 30 years and then lived in Holton from 1999 – 2004. Opal was a homemaker. In earlier years, she worked in the café at the Onaga Sale Barn and was also a custodian for Corning United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Circleville United Methodist Church. She was also past president of American Legion Auxiliary in Corning and United Methodist Women at Goff United Methodist Church.

Opal married Raymond Earl Adams on September 13, 1946 in Hiawatha, KS. He preceded her in death on June 11, 2010. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Eugene Adams; a daughter, Bonnie Jean Adams; a grandson, Jason L. Adams and 3 brothers, Alvin, Noble and Lawrence Bell.

Survivors include a son, Roger Adams (Judy) of Corning, KS; 3 brothers, Earl Bell (Elsie) of Iola, KS, Roy Bell (Pasty) of Seneca, KS and Gary Bell (Carolyn) of Holton, KS; 3 grandchildren, Brenda Quigley (Ron) of Corning, KS, Ryan Adams (Melissa) of Topeka, KS and Janelle Stockwell (Jim) of Lenexa, KS; a granddaughter-in-law, Laura Conley (Jeremy) of Havensville, KS and 9 great-grandchildren, Noah, Dawson, Taegan, Camden, Damon, Delaney, Landon, Adalei and Hailee.

Richard Francis Huninghake, 63, of Baileyville passed away at his home on Saturday, October 22, 2016 after a year and half battle with cancer.

Richard was born on January 5, 1953 in Axtell, the son of Paul and Mary Ann Stallbaumer Huninghake.

He graduated from Baileyville high School in 1971. After graduation, Richard attended Vo-tech in Atchison, after graduating from the Vo-tech; he went to work for Brey Motors in Sabetha running the wrecker for a year.

On August 25, 1973 he married Patricia (Patty) High at Sacred Heart church in Baileyville. They made their home in Atchison where he was employed at Rockwell. In 1977, Richard moved his family to Seneca where they lived for 8 years. Richard was employed at Mokin Pet Foods. In 1985, Richard and his family moved to Baileyville. He went to work for Hamm Rock Quarries where he ran the rock crusher.

On October 22, 1988 Richard had a dune buggy accident that left him paralyzed. He did not let that stop him. He went to “Beaver’s station and worked on everything from lawn mowers to 4-wheelers. Whenever anyone needed something fixed they would bring it to him; and if he could not fix it, then it could not be fixed. He enjoyed working on cars before his accident; after his accident he enjoyed putting model cars together. Richard took pride in restoring old guns, making them look new again. He enjoyed being with family and friends and going to the Casino.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Patty of the home; a son, Donald Huninghake of Axtell; a daughter, Stacy Wessel of Baileyville; a step-son, Brian (April) High of Janesville, Wisconsin; his mother, Mary Ann Huninghake of Seneca; brothers, Larry (Judy) Huninghake of Salina, Lyle (Mary) Huninghake of Atchison, Galen (Susan) Huninghake of Baileyville; sisters, Lois Boeker of Bern and Teresa Kalin of Cook, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Chelsea, Veronica, Samantha, Trenton and Stephanie; his Aunt, Alma Sack of Denver, Colorado; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Huninghake.

Benjamin William Fleming, 91, of Sabetha died Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Sabetha, Kansas.

Benjamin, was born April 6, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri to Benjamin Worley Fleming and Easter Mae Jewell. He was 20 minutes older than his identical twin brother, Samuel Worley Fleming. Benjamin’s father's family originated from Belgium and his mother was of Scotch Irish ancestry.

The family moved to Texas a month after the birth of the twins where he grew up and graduated from Crystal City, Texas High School in May of 1942.  Benjamin and his twin brother then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May of 1942.   They were both sent to Newport, RI for torpedo school training.  Afterwards, Ben served on the USS Melvin Destroyer.  He was a Veteran of World War II.

On January 8, 1945 he married Vera Coleman, they were blessed with two daughters, Alta Mae Hopp of Chandler, AZ and Charlotte (John) Hartter of Sabetha, Ks.  Benjamin worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad in the round house and then as a telegraph operator until 1960. He then moved from Crystal City, Texas to San Antonio, Texas and drove a city bus at night and went to school during the day for electronics.  He then acquired a job with Western Union as an electronic technician and was transferred to Sabetha, Ks in 1962. 

Benjamin loved to fly, he acquired his license to fly small aircraft and also was licensed to fly helicopters.   He then became a flight instructor and taught numerous people around the local area to fly.  Benjamin also had a small engine repair shop and was a licensed electrician and plumber. He was a long time member of the Dimmit County Masonic Lodge #566 in Carrizo Springs, Texas. He was a member of the Sabetha Lions Club. He and Vera loved to dance and went dancing every chance they could.  Benjamin loved his gardening and canning.  He also liked to cook and try new recipes.  But the most important thing is he loved chicken fried steak and pinto beans. 

Benjamin had five grandchildren, Bowdy Hartter, Tyran (Kelli) Hartter, Pam Hopp, John Hopp Jr, and Kayla Hopp. He had six great grandchildren, Kyla and Lauri Hopp, Trenton and Jayce Hartter, Madison and Kinsley Schryver.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Vera on February 5, 2013, brother and sister.

Esther was born on September 11, 1926, in Nemaha County, NE, the daughter of Paul and Emma (Hahn) Stiles. Esther was married to Joseph Morris on April 3, 1943 in Troy, KS. Esther was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother to her children. Esther was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Atchison.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Morris Ramsey, Kirkland, AZ; daughter-in- law, Nancy Christman, Wathena, KS; five grandchildren, Arnold Ramsey, Jayson Christman, Candis Christman, Angie Taylor and Danielle Brull; ten great-grandchildren.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; one son, Daniel Morris; sisters, Hazel Carr, Marie Kidd, and Helen Manus.

Neva F. Briles, 90, of Hiawatha, died at her home Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

She was born on a farm near Troy, April 16, 1926, the only child of the late Archie and Velma Griffis Morris and had lived in the northeast Kansas area all of her life. She grew up in the Troy/Moray area where the family farmed and she attended country school there, prior to graduating from Troy High School with the class of 1944. In her early years, she helped out on the farm and was a dedicated wife and mother. Neva lived in the Troy/Moray area for a number of years before moving north of Sparks to live from 1964 until 1978, then moving to Hiawatha.

Neva attended the Sparks Baptist Church for many years. While living in Hiawatha, she grew more tomato plants than needed as she enjoyed sharing with folks in the community. She also enjoyed raising and tending her garden flowers.

She married William A. “Bill” Briles, July 5, 1994. They lived all of their married life in Hiawatha. He died July 16, 2004.

Survivors include a son Chris Clark, his friend Robyn Barnett of Wetmore; three grandchildren: Curtis Clark of Powhattan, Christy Clark of Horton, Justin Clark of Kansas City; and two great-grandsons: Nathan Clark, and Toby Clark.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, October 22, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Rev. Jerry Petering officiating. Interment will follow at the Burrell Family Cemetery, west of Troy.

Friends may call after 10 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Saturday.

Rose was born on October 19, 1931, in Atchison, KS the daughter of Charles William and Minnie (Lungwitz) Ebbs. She enjoyed her  dogs, life on the farm and her flowers.

She was married to John “Jack” W. Smith in 1948 in Atchison at the First Christian Church.

Clifford G. Pennington, Sr., 80, Atchison, Kansas died Monday, October 17, 2016 at Country Care Nursing Home, Easton, Kansas, surrounded by family.

Clifford was born January 5, 1936 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Ora Edgar Pennington, Sr. and Hazel Mildred Hyatt Pennington.  He attended USD #409 Schools in Atchison.

He and Mary Leona Cline were united in marriage on August 25, 1957 in Rushville, Missouri.  Mrs. Pennington preceded him in death on November 4, 2008.

Clifford was employed with Pillsbury Company/MGP Ingredients for over 24 years, until his retirement.  Following retirement he was employed with West Lanes Bowling Alley.

Clifford served in the United States Army from August 1953 until his honorable discharge in September 1958.

He was an enthusiastic bowler, and bowled with many teams over the years.  Clifford bowled two perfect 300 games in his years of bowling and was very helpful with Atchison youth bowling.  He served as a coach for his children in baseball and softball.  In his spare time he loved to read and listen to music.

Survivors include, two sons, Ronald (Kristen) Pennington, Atchison, KS; Thomas (Shannon) Pennington, Atchison, KS; five daughters, Anna Fowler, Atchison, KS; Cathy Pennington, Atchison, KS; Patty (Dan) Pruett, Del City, OK; Nancy Pennington, Atchison, KS; Lisa Pennington Walker, Leavenworth, KS; two brothers, Leslie Wayne Pennington, Atchison, KS; Harold Dean Pennington, Pennsylvania; a half-brother, Donald Allis, Baldwin, KS; three sisters, Connie Hipsher, Topeka, KS; Gladys Johnson, Texas; and sister Norma in Arizona; and a half-sister, Becky Chrisman, Loveland, CO; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Pennington, Atchison, KS; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Clifford Gene Pennington, Jr.; grandson, Shaun Ostertag; great granddaughter, Irelynn Nevaeh Buduski Pruett; two brothers, Glen Dale Pennington and Ora Edgar Pennington, Jr., and also his beloved dog, Klink. 

James S Belden, 76, of Lincoln was born near Dawson, Nebraska on October 23, 1939 to George Jr. and Gladys Estep Belden.  He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Dawson High School with the class of 1957. After graduating from the University of Nebraska, he taught high school English for a few years.  On August 7, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Gwen Watsek at The Christian Church in Humboldt.  They established their home in Lincoln where Jim was employed by the Nebraska Department of Labor until his retirement in 2002.

Jim passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the High Plains Assisted Living Facility in Lincoln having reached the age of seventy-six years, eleven months, and twenty-three days.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Patricia Kay Windrum.  

Jim is survived by his wife Qwen of Lincoln, NE; two daughters, Lori (William) Koepke of Lincoln, NE; Lisa Belden and Ignacio Moore, Blacksburg, VA; four grandchildren: Mackenzie and Benjamin Koepke of Lincoln, NE; Amalia and Camilo Moore of Blacksburg, VA; father-in-law Albert Watsek of Lincoln, NE; brother-in-law Allen (Jody) Watsek of Lincoln, NE; brother-in-law Larry Windrum of St. Paul, MN; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mary L. Van Dyke, 73, Atchison, Kansas died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at her home after living nearly two years with ovarian cancer.

Mary Louise Cochran was born on October 5, 1943, the fourth child of William and Lillian Cochran.

She obtained two masters degrees, the first in educational psychology and research and the second in computer studies. Mary wrote various grants, including Apple Computer grants which led to her becoming a beta tester for the company; the Casting the Nets grant which connected at-risk girls and individuals from Happy Hearts and the Shepherd Center with her students to learn about computers; and The Road Ahead grant which funded technology conferences at schools. Mary was an educator for years, teaching elementary students at Atchison Catholic schools and gifted and talented students both in Atchison and Lawrence, Kansas school districts.

Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and cheering on her favorite sports teams. She traveled to 19 countries, and in the last several months of her life she experienced an NBA game in Oklahoma, Chris Botti concerts in Manhattan, Kansas and Red Rocks in Colorado, and Royals games in Minneapolis. She lived a good life and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by John Van Dyke, Sr., her husband of 56 years. Other survivors include her children: John Van Dyke, Jr., Tim Van Dyke (Joanie Frakes), both of Atchison, KS; David Van Dyke (Valerie) and Mary Beth McClintock (Brent), both of Kansas City, MO; Sara Van Dyke of New York City, NY and Andrea Verbanic (Michael), of Eudora, KS, her mother Lillian Cochran, Atchison, KS, and her grandchildren Audrey, Curtis, Joyce and Glen McClintock, and Ryan, Joseph and Thomas Verbanic.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, and a brother, Glen Cochran.

Margaret Naomi (Hill) Zimmerman was bon August 4, 1923 on a farm near Stella, NE to James Isaiah and Lillian Mae (Cummings) Hill.  She attended Tynan School, walking through a field with her brothers and sisters.  She graduated from Dawson High School.  She worked for other families, helping them when needed.   A friend invited her to go to an ice cream social at her church and she met Robert Ludwig Zimmerman.  They dated almost two years and then were married October 8, 1944.  After marriage she was baptized and confirmed at that same church, The Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church.  She was a faithful member of that church all her life, a part of the Builders Class, Choir, Sunday School and Bible School teacher, Women's Fellowship, sewing and quilting.   She wrote a special song, "This Old Country Church" which she sang while she played the guitar.  Throughout her life she wore many hats as Mother and Wife.  She had a big garden, helped milk cows, raised chickens and two kids!  She sewed for many people, her specialty was quilting.

She is survived by her husband Robert and daughter Susan (Bill) Sipple, daughter-in-law, Carol Zimmerman.  Grandchildren, Timothy Chesnut (Christi), Angela Chesnut, Robbie Sipple (Amanda), Christina Sipple (Jimmie Scarberry), Darcy Zimmerman (Charity) and Lindsay (Zimmerman) Druba (Jeff).  Step grandchildren, Lonnie Bahr (Cathy) and Kerry (Bahr) Fritz (Darrin).  14 Great grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and 1 step great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by their son Thomas Allen Zimmerman, her parents and three brothers and four sisters.  Albert Hill, Raymond (Veattress) Hill, Vionetta (Dutch) Moodey, Martha (Donald) Sherman, Helen (Glenn) Rieger, Claudia (Marlin) Armbruster, Dorothy (Lloyd) Siercks and Howard "Bud" Hill. 

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at the Zion United Church of Christ with Reverend Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Inurnment will be in the Zion United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Blanche was born September 12, 1924 in Paris, France, the daughter of Marcel and Marguerite (Chemin) Pinguet.  After she finished her schooling, she was a secretary near the Champs de Elysee. During World War II, she met her future husband, Ernest Higley, near there in Paris after the liberation.  She later came to the U.S. and they were married on December18, 1946 and celebrated 69 years of married life.  After diligently studying the English language, Blanche became a US citizen. She was a housewife and farmed with Ernest. As an active member of Cummings Christian Church, she taught Sunday School Class and VBS many years and was the head of the Missions Committee.

Ernest and Blanche were blessed with five children, Marcelline Vaughan, Effingham, KS, Linda Hittle, Dewey, OK, Kathy Miller, Yukon, OK, Jean Higley, and Glenn Higley, Independence, MO, seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Higley, her parents and one brother, Robert Pinguet.

William E. “Billy” Ray, 63, of Topeka, KS passed away Sunday, October 16, 2016 in Topeka. He was born March 6, 1953, at Langley AFB, VA, the son of Frank E. and Mary Lou (Meston) Ray.

Billy lived in several states growing up, but when his dad retired from the Air Force, the family moved back to the home town of Holton, KS. Billy played football for the Holton Wildcats during high school and graduated from Holton High School in 1973.  He had a wonderful singing voice and performed in plays at HHS as well as being in the men’s choir. He attended Butler Community College for about a year and a half. He also performed in plays at Butler, where his singing voice was admired by many. He decided to go into the service and joined the United States Marine Corps. In 1976 he received an honorable discharge due to medical issues.

Billy had several hobbies when he was young. He worked on model airplanes and vehicles. He loved to go fishing with his brother, sister, grandpa and dad. When he was older, he had to stay in a nursing home. His dad would take him out to go bowling, bring him home to help around the house with chores, go fishing, to a movie and come home for the holidays; especially Thanksgiving family reunions. Those were good times and good memories for all of the family.

Billy’s parents, Frank and Mary Lou, preceded him in death.

He is survived by one brother, Michael Ray of Topeka, KS; two sisters, Debra Davis (Ed) of Holton, KS and Susan Starbird (Jason) of Andover, KS and his step-mother, Kay Jones-Ray of Topeka, KS. Billy never married but he was very devoted to his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Rose Eugenia (Grande) Jaques, 94, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born January 11, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York to Carmen and Adeline (Yocca) Grande.  She was raised in Brooklyn, New York where she attended Our Lady of Guadalupe elementary school and Saint Brendan’s High School graduating with the class of 1940.  On November 20, 1943, Rose was united in marriage to William Jaques in Carlisle, Pennsylvania after eloping.  To this union four children, William Jr., Elizabeth, Rosemary, and Kenneth were born.  The couple raised their family on Staten Island, New York where Rose worked for many years as the church secretary for St. Teresa’s Catholic Church.  In 2010, she moved to the assisted living facility at Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt where she has been a resident since.  Rose was a huge sports fan of teams which consisted mostly from the East Coast where she was born and raised.  She loved New York Jets football, New York Mets baseball, and New York Rangers hockey. 
Rose passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the age of ninety-four years, nine months, and four days.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William Jaques, and son William Jaques Jr.
Rose is survived by her loving children: Betty Manley and her husband Leo of Dawson, NE; Rosemary Kochman and her husband George of Tinton Falls, NJ; Kenneth Jaques and his wife Geri of Staten Island, NY; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; 2 step great-great-grandchildren; a brother Robert Grande and his wife Antoinette of Manchester, NJ; and many other relatives and friends.
A Rosary will be recited held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dawson, Nebraska with Father Kenneth Hoesing reciting.

Jack LeRoy “Catfish Jack” Sample, 58, died early Sunday, October 16, 2016, at his home in Robinson, surrounded by family.

Jack was born July 13, 1958, in Topeka, the eldest of four children born to  Jack and Laura Fountain Sample and had lived most of his life in Topeka until later years.  He grew up in Topeka, attended schools there, where he graduated from Highland Park High School with the class of 1976.  He worked in a private laboratory as a tech for a number of years prior to working as a cook off and on for various restaurants in the Topeka/Holton area including Willie’s Steak House in Holton.  It was his work as a cook that earned the nickname of “Catfish Jack.”  Jack later was a cook for the Golden Eagle Casino at Horton for a few years.

Jack served on committee for the Robinson Park for a few years.  Jack was an avid KU basketball fan.  He and Ollie were rivals – he was a KC Chiefs fan, she being Denver Bronco.

He married Ollie Garman, December 31, 1984, at Topeka.  They spent their married life in Topeka until moving to Hiawatha in 2001, and about a year later, moving to Robinson.  She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters:  Richelle Logan of Topeka, Rebecca Lowe of Hiawatha, Brittney Sample of Robinson; three sons Tony Niccoli (Brandi) of Topeka, Sean Sample, David Sample, of Robinson; a sister Shelley Sample Aldrich of Topeka; 11 grandchildren; with a number of nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers:  John Sample, and Jimmy Sample in infancy.

Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. Friday, October 21, at the Memorial Veterans Building, 214 Main, Robinson, with Paul Kline officiating.  Private inurnment at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson.

The family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 Thursday evening at the Veterans Building, and also an hour prior to services.

Darlene L. Cattrell, 75, of Nortonville, KS passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. She was born October 26, 1940 in St. Joseph, MO, the daughter of Frank and Emeline (McCloskey) Ingels.

Darlene graduated from Netawaka High School in 1958. In 1962, she moved to Nortonville. She was a cook and later cook supervisor for 35 years at ACCHS schools retiring in 2002. Darlene also worked for 5 years at Bromley Quarry as an office specialist.

She was a member of the Effingham Union Church, Nites Circle at the church and 16-75ers Square Dance Club. Darlene was a 4-H Leader for over 20 years at Prairie View.

Darlene married Kenneth Cattrell on April 25, 1959 in Whiting, KS. He survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Gary (Theresa) Cattrell of Nortonville, KS; a daughter, Kathy Cattrell (Steve Lee) of Atchison, KS; a sister, Joyce (Keith) Parrett of Holton, KS; 2 sister-in-laws, Elsie Ingels of Topeka, KS and  Mary Beth Day of Glenwood, IA; 4 grandchildren, Jason Cattrell, Randy Cattrell (Alicia), Ashley Henning (Justin) and Joey Cattrell (Alicia) and 7 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Peyton, Emily, Riley, Jakob, Hannah and Baylee.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers, Marvin and Kenny Ingels.

Marcella "Jean" (Bunck) Earp, 90 of Everest, Kansas passed away on October 15, 2016 at the Horton Community Hospital after being in a coma for 8 days.

She was born on June 26, 1926 in rural Everest, Kansas, the daughter of Herman and Marcelline (Hagel) Bunck. She graduated from Everest High School in 1943. After graduation she worked in St. Joseph, Missouri. Jean married the love of her life Harold (Bud) Earp on October 25, 1947 and they were married for 67 years. She was a farm wife until she started working a the Everest Middle School in 1968. She became the head cook and retired from the school district in 1990.

Jean was a great cook but baking and candy making were her passion. She loved gardening and raising roses and the many other varieties of flowers that were part of her yard. She was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church and Altar Society in Horton, Kansas. She was a member of the Everest Historical Society and American Legion Post 288 Auxiliary for many years and served on the board for the Everest Alumni Association and decorating committee for many years. As a farm wife she enjoyed the clubs she belonged to along with her Bunco Club.

Jean is survived by 2 daughters, Carol Berger of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Linda (John) Spangler of Everest, Kansas. Grandchildren, Tony (Margaret) Lockwood, Chris (Amanda) Berger, Jennifer (Victor) Fuentes, Lisa (Bob) Burns, Scott (Melinda) Spangler. Great Grandchildren, Aubrey, Nicholas, Santiago, Jessica, Paige, Justin, Devin, Xander and Sawyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Marcelline Bunck, her husband, Harold Earp, brother, Jim Bunck and grandson, Jeffrey Berger.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited on Monday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary where the family will greet friends following the rosary. Dana K. Kientz, 87, Valley Falls, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at Medicalodges of Jackson County in Holton.
   
He was born March 14, 1929, at Meriden, the son of Albert R. and Gracie Marks Kientz.
    
Dana was a house painter and had worked in the Valley Falls community and in Topeka. He was an avid outdoors man who loved local hunting and fishing. He enjoyed working with firearms and ammunition reloading equipment.
    
He married Marjorie A. Brown, Oct. 23, 1949, at Valley Falls. She died June 22, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Sandi Thompson, and two brothers, Darwin and Ray Kientz.
    
Survivors include two sons, Steve (Kim) Kientz, and Russ (Sheril) Kientz, and one daughter, Jeri (LaVerne) Clark, all of Valley Falls; a sister, Anita Sanderson, Tecumseh; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
    
A private Graveside Service will be held at the Ozawkie Cemetery.

Nancy J. Broxterman, 62, of Sabetha died Thursday, October 13, 2016.  

Nancy was born to Murray and Mava Wagner on September 4, 1954 in Seneca, Kansas.  Nancy was one of five children - (Jack Wagner (deceased), Alice (Elmer) Lackey of Seneca, Kansas, Brad Wagner of Seattle, Washington, and Tim Wagner, Seneca, Kansas).  She graduated from Nemaha Valley High School in May of 1972.  Nancy married Leon Broxterman on May 5, 1973 in Baileyville, Kansas.  Leon and Nancy started their lives together in Sabetha, Kansas where they raised three children – Jacquelyn (Christopher) Halls of Sabetha, Sheila (Gary) Stratton of Spring Hill, Kansas, and Westley (Kris) Broxterman of Topeka, Kansas.

Nancy took great pride in staying home with her children while they were young.  When they were older, she worked as a school cook for the USD 113 district and as a teller at United Bank.  Ultimately, Nancy returned to the Sabetha Middle School to assist with the school food program.  She talked fondly of her job and dearly loved the kids.  She tried daily to make a positive difference in their day.  In addition, Nancy was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish in Sabetha.  

Including her husband and children, Nancy absolutely loved her family.  Her grandchildren (Derek, Corbin, and Ashten Halls; Mitchell and Miles Stratton; Averi, Aila, and Alex Broxterman) always came first.  Through words, actions, and lots of love, she taught them some of the most valuable lessons in life.  

She is preceded in death by her brother; mother and father; father-in-law, Leonard “Bud” Broxterman; and, brother-in-law, Alan Stallbaumer.   

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 17, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha. A visitation will be held Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha.  A parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Viola Maxine Cannon, 85, of Goff, KS passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. She was born July 9, 1931 in Goff, KS the daughter of Carl and Reba Maxine (Rokes) Shuler.

Viola spent most of her life in the Goff community. She worked at Hillside Rest Home in Goff. She also worked for over 20 years at Merry Manor in housekeeping and laundry and she was a Certified Nurse’s Aide.

Viola married Donald F. Cannon on April 9, 1950 in Goff, KS. He preceded her in death on January 8, 2013. She was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Richard Cannon in 1972 and Calvin Cannon in 2008; a daughter, Donna Johnsen in 2011; 2 brothers, Lawrence Shuler and Harold Shuler and a sister, Bonnie Jo Shuler.

Survivors include 2 sons, Raymond Cannon (Nancy) of Holton, KS and Carl Cannon (Cathy) of Goff, KS; a daughter, Darlene Cannon of Goff, KS; 2 sisters, Mary Ann Kirk of Goff, KS and Darlene McCann of Clay Center, KS; 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Harold Eugene Schlender, 76, of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born on March 3, 1940 in Tecumseh, Nebraska to William Harold and Marie (Pierce) Schlender.

Harold is survived by his wife Virginia of Pawnee City, NE, daughter Cindy Johnson of Pawnee City, NE and sons, Rick Schlender and Jeff Schlender of Kearney, NE.

Maxine Zula Lundin, 90, of Topeka, KS, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.

She was born April 9, 1926 in Delia, KS the daughter of Jacob E. “Bill” and Florence M. (Stout) Murback. Maxine attended grade school in rural Delia and Mayetta. She graduated from Mayetta High School in 1944. On February 14, 1946 Maxine married Erick “Swede” A. Lundin in Holton and was blessed with 62 years of married life. Swede preceded her in death on February 28, 2007.

She had lived in Topeka until 1961 and worked as a clerk/typist for Topeka Supply Depot and Forbes Air Force Base, both through the civil service. From 1961 – 1979 Maxine had lived in Delia; she was a member of Delia United Presbyterian Church and served as elder and church treasurer and was active in the youth group and women’s group, she also served 4 terms as Delia City Clerk. She moved to Ft. Worth, TX from 1979 – 1985 and was an active member of the Trinity Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In 1985 she returned to Topeka and was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church and served as moderator of the Women’s Circle and also served on the Board of Deacons.

Maxine was a devoted loving wife, daughter and niece to five aunts and two uncles, including their spouses. She enjoyed preparing family dinners. Although she had no nieces and nephews on her side of the family, it warmed her heart to be called “Aunt Maxine” by her caring in-laws and friends.

Nellie Pearl Schuler, 95, of Falls City, NE passed away October 11, 2016. She was born January 14, 1921 at Richardson County to the late Dennis and Neva (Bradberry) Nixon.

She married Maynard Schuler on September 17, 1941 at Falls City. He later passed away on October 16, 2012.

Nellie was raised in Richardson and Brown Counties and attended Hamlin High School. Once married the couple established their home in Brown County. She worked as a homemaker her entire life and always enjoyed helping on the farm. The couple moved into Falls City in 1993 and have lived there ever since. She is a member of First United Methodist Church in Falls City.

Nellie is survived by daughter Janyce Kirkendall and Mark O’Grady of Falls City; one grandchild, and four great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Maynard, son-in-law, Ron Kirkendall, three brothers; Mark, Earl, and Chester, sister, Lucretia Meinheit, and a granddaughter, Michelle Peterson.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at the Dorr and Clark Funeral Home in Falls City with Reverend Paul Weinert officiating. Interment will be at the Harris Cemetery at Barada, NE to follow.

There will be an open visitation.

Johnny Ray Whetstine, 68, of rural Highland, died Tuesday evening, October 11, 2016, at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.

He was born on a farm north of Troy, February 23, 1948, one of four children born to Hugh Dale “Jack” and Jo Ann McConnaughey Whetstine and was a lifelong Doniphan County resident.  He grew up near Highland where he attended county schools of Hickory Grove and Buffalo Hollow until the fourth grade, soon after his youngest brother Jason was born his family packed up and moved to a farm near Highland, as a Blue Streak John enjoyed being around more kids, participating in FFA and he loved  playing football. He graduated from Highland High School in 1966.  John’s desire was to farm which he did right out of high school, with his parents and brother. In later years, he was blessed to continue life ambition with his wife Virginia, son and nephews.

He was a life time member of Community of Christ Church at Fanning Ks, where he was an ordained Deacon.  John also was a member of the Fox Hunters Association. John loved to visit with hunters at his son’s family’s hunting camp – Rawhide Camp.

John married the love of his life Virginia R. Cole, June 7, 1969, on the farm northeast of Highland.  They spent all of their married life near Highland where they were fortunate to farm together and raise their family.  Virginia survives of the home.

Also surviving are a son Johnny Dale Whetstine (Dana) of rural Highland; two daughters:  Melanie Hollabaugh (Bruce), and JoEllen Banks; both of Highland; a sister Carolyn Saunders of rural Troy; a brother Jason of Lawrence Ks. Sister in law Kathy A.Whetstine-Twombly of Highland; and 13 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Larry.

A Celebration of Life Service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, at the Community of Christ Church at Fanning, with Evangelist Kathy A. Twombly, and High Priest Mark Twombly officiating.  Cremation will follow service.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday.  The family will meet with friends at the Community of Christ church from 6 until 8 that evening.

James L. “Jimmie” Ruddy, 88, of Troy, Kansas passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at his home. 
James was born on February 3, 1928 in Atchison, Kansas to James G. & Margaret J. (Gray) Ruddy. 
Jimmie was a graduate of the Moray Grade School & Troy High School. 
He was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church of Troy, Troy Army National Guard for 12 years, a Charter member of Troy Lions Club, REA board, Zoning Board & original #5 Water Committee. Jimmie was a lifelong farmer & an active member of the Troy Booster Club. Jimmie was known to his family & friends as a loving, honest & caring man. He will be greatly missed. 
James married Mary Ruth Herring on December 27, 1950 in Purcell, Kansas. She survives of the home.

Daisy Howe, 75, of Holton, KS passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at her home. She was born May 13, 1941 in Soldier, KS, the daughter of Donald J. and Donna Gladys (Davis) VanDonge.

Daisy graduated from Soldier High School and lived all of her life in the Soldier and Holton communities. She was a nurse’s aide at the Onaga Community Hospital and at Jackson County Nursing Home. Daisy had been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Netawaka.

She was married to Ronald E. Howe on December 15, 1963 in Topeka. Ron passed away May 16, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Dennis VanDonge in 1987.

Daisy is survived by her sons, David Howe (Carla), Ron Howe (Lesley) and Brian Howe (Squig) all of Holton, KS; her daughter, Julie Wheeler (Kent) of Holton, KS and step-daughter, Judett Howe of Bonner Springs, KS; her sisters, Deloris Beam (Don) of Circleville, KS and Dianna Wilson (Willy) of Holton, KS; her brothers, Donald VanDonge (Evie) of Topeka, KS and Danny VanDonge (Shirley) of Havensville, KS; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Travis Brian Shaw, 52, of Horton, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at his home.

Travis was born August 30, 1964, at Hiawatha, one of three children born to Lester and Phyllis Rowan Shaw.  Travis grew up in Hiawatha where he attended Hiawatha Schools, later working to receive his GED.  Travis operated a trash service in Hiawatha a few years, before working delivering propane for Heetco in Robinson and Falls City.  Travis spent many years working for various freight companies in this area as an over the road truck driver.

Travis enjoyed being a part of the early morning coffee group at the Blue Ribbon Diner in Horton. Travis enjoyed adventures in spur of the moment outings, and being chauffeured in those outings.  He had a quick wit…always had a comeback!  He was baptized and married in the First Christian Church in Hiawatha.

Survivors include his wife Debbie (Statler) Shaw of Horton; a step-son Shawn (Becca) Beecham, their children:  Delaney, Nikki and Sam, all of Horton; his sister Diane (Sam) Jenkins of Topeka; nephews: Weston Shaw and Kraig Shaw.

Travis was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Russell in 2012.

A Celebration and Fellowship for Travis is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday, October 16, at the First Christian Church basement in Hiawatha.  Pastor Dennis Alan Fulbright will officiate.  Private inurnment will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

The family will meet with friends a half hour prior to service.

Helen May (Beer) Feek was born July 12, 1917 near Salem, Nebraska in the Honey Creek Community to John and Julia (Foster) Beer. She passed away Monday, October 10, 2016 at the Apostolic Christian Home at the age of 99, the oldest and last member of her generation of the Beer family.

Helen married Carl Feek on March 12, 1939 and resided in the Honey Creek Community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl on June 16, 1989; a son, Gary on February 6, 1989; brothers, Alvy Beer and Freddie Beer; and sisters, Emma Edelman, Ruth Arick, and Norma Lee Beer.

She is survived by children, Fred (Karen) Feek, Julia (Bill) Thompson, Martha (Tom) McCune, Norma (Al) Montgomery, John (Carole) Feek, Larry (Doris) Feek, Mary Feek, and Darnelle (Roger) Wilhelm; 18 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.

Tony was born on April 2, 1985 the son of Marshall Schwarz and Karen Ramsey. He graduated from Atchison High School. Tony was a stay at home dad. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, cookouts, bonfires, and being outdoors. Tony especially loved spending time with his family.

Tony was engaged to Becky Gerber, she survives of the home. He was also preceded in death by his father.

Rachel O. Seematter, 93, of Frankfort, KS, died Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Frankfort Community Care Home.

Survivors include six children, Patricia and husband Dennis Wanklyn, Jane and husband Bob Kenworthy, Dean and wife Carolyn Seematter, twins, Elma and husband Wayne Mitchell and Ellen and husband Robert Koch, Dale and wife Janet Seematter, all of Frankfort; one brother, Hubert "Hub" Roeder, Frankfort; eighteen grandchildren; and thirty-two great-grandchildren.

Before her husband, Roy, passed away on March 16, 2009, one of his life long dreams was fulfilled when a large cross was erected on a hill south of Frankfort on November 2, 2008. Memorial contributions will go toward the lighting of this cross.

Wilma Jean Blaser, 96, of Marysville, KS, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 12, from noon until 8 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 13, at the United Methodist Church in Marysville.   Rev. Dale Lewis will officiate.  Deb Landoll will play the organ while the congregation sings “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace”.

Wilma Jean was born August 12, 1920, at Waverly, KS, daughter of Alfred John and Alice June (Harrison) Williamson.  She graduated from Little River High School and attended Emporia State Teachers College and graduated from Hutchinson Business College.

On December 1, 1946, Wilma Jean married Walter Raymond Blaser at her parents’ home in Little River, Kansas.

Wilma Jean worked in a secretarial position in the Wichita area before her marriage.  After moving to Marysville she became Clerk of the District Court in Marshall County from 1967 to 1984.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and past member of Order of the Eastern Star and Women of the Moose.

Wilma Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter on August 21, 2005; sisters, Marguerite Alber and Dolores Wandell; and twin brother, Wilbur Dean Williamson.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Noreen Williamson of Warrensburg, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

Mildred Louise Werner, 100, of Horton, Kansas passed away peacefully on October 6, 2016 at the Mission Village Living Center.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on October 10, 2016 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church with Father Dan officiating Internment will follow at the St. Leo’s Catholic Cemetery in Horton, Kansas. Mildred was born on February 12, 1916 in Germantown, Kansas (now Mercier, Kansas) the daughter of John and Mary (Winterscheidt) Schuetz. She was the last of twelve children in the family. She attended school in Mercier. She married Karl P. Werner on May 10, 1939 in Mercier, Kansas. They resided in Mercier, Fairview and Horton communities. She was a farm and house wife and also worked at the Horton Garment Factory, Holton Garment Factory and Delores Square Dancing as a Sewing Machine Operator. She enjoyed quilting and sewing in her spare time.

Survivors include sons, Don (Connie) Werner of Horton, Ks., Bob (Diane) Werner of Burlington, Ks., daughters, Carol Burns of Blue Eye, Mo., Janice Bechtold of Kansas City, Mo. Grandchildren, D.J. Lowell Alan Moser, 82, of Effingham, KS passed away Thursday, October 6, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO. He was born April 1, 1934 in Horton, KS, the son of Ralph George and Cecil Irene (Bartley) Moser.

Lowell graduated from Powhattan High School in 1952 and Highland Junior College in 1955. He received his Bachelor’s in Agriculture Economics from Kansas State University in 1961. Lowell proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Lowell was a Soil Conservation Planner for the USDA in Holton joining in March of 1969. He later worked as District Conservationist in Atchison County giving farmers assistance and guidance in soil conservation and pasture management. Lowell retired after 28 years. For most of his life, Lowell raised Holstein, Hereford, and Angus cattle and showed them at local, district and state fairs. He was a proud member of the American Hereford Association, American Angus Association, and Kansas Livestock Association.

Lowell enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren succeed in their activities. After graduation from Kansas State University, he remained a fan for the rest of his life. He was a Kansas State University football season ticket holder for many years and attended several bowl games.

He was a member of Effingham Union Church and Elks Club in Hiawatha.

On June 7, 1964, Lowell married Mary Jane Warren in Hiawatha. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Dan Moser (Lisa) of Westmoreland, KS; a daughter, Kristi Moser (Rob Curley) of Spokane, WA; 3 grandchildren, Justin, Ryan and Allison Moser and 2 sisters, Annette Larson (Stan) of Lawrence, KS and Jane Fox (Bill) of Overbrook, KS.

Charlotte V. Barajas, 92, Atchison, Kansas died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at the Atchison Hospital, Atchison, Kansas.

Charlotte was born September 18, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio the daughter of Harry and Helen “Snowwhite” Wilson Fox. She attended schools in Hamilton, Ohio; Metamora, Indiana and Brookfield, Indiana.

Charlotte and Dennis E. Upchurch were married June 10, 1944, and later divorced. She and David Barajas were united in marriage on October 31, 1961 in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. Barajas preceded her in death in 1996.

Mrs. Barajas was a homemaker, a devout wife and mother to their children.

Survivors include, two sons, Donald Upchurch, Uncasville, Conn; David Donti Barajas, Atchison, KS; four daughters, Debbie (Wayne) Wisniewiski, Uncasville, Conn; Tina Barajas, Atchison, KS; Tynya Barajas, Atchison, KS; Mia (David) Hall, Fair Grove, MO; three sisters, Ruthie (Bill) Wendt-Scott, West Chester, OH; Evelyn (Herman) Carpenter, Hamilton, OH, Pearl (Tom) Baldwin-Simmering, Winder, GA; ten grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren.

Virginia A. Jones was born at Hanover, Illinois, September 26, 1923, one of five children born to John Bentley and Viola Morris Harkness and was the only one of her siblings not born in Eastern Montana.  Her parents homesteaded in Montana where they lived in a log cabin before the family moved to Illinois where she grew up and attended school.  After her marriage, she lived with her parents in Illinois as her husband enlisted in the Navy during World War II.  During the war, Virginia worked at an ordnance plant there.

Virginia died Tuesday evening, October 4, 2016, shortly after arrival at Hiawatha Community Hospital.  She had been a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha for several years.

Mrs. Jones was a lifetime member of First Christian Church of Hiawatha; the ladies auxiliary to VFW Post #5210 of Hiawatha; and White Hall Social Club.

She married Howard Jones July 6, 1940 at Dubuque, Iowa.  After the War, they moved to Ottawa prior to moving to northeast Kansas where they settled in Hiawatha and raised their family.  She worked as a waitress for the Nokomis Restaurant, prior to working at Hohnbaum Bakery, and Neil Albee family market, all of Hiawatha. Howard Died November 6, 1994. Interesting to note, her great-great grandfather was Daniel Boone.

Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Judy Jones March 20, 2008, Rhonda in infancy; and a brother.

Survivors include three sons:  John Howard “Butch” (Diane) Jones of Wichita, Earl (Carol) Jones of Hiawatha, Bill Jones of Hamlin; a sister Jackie Murphy of Vancouver, WA; six grandchildren, with numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.  

A Celebration of Virginia’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, October 8, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, with Reverend Dennis Alan Fullbright, officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 noon Friday.  The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Saturday.

Donald Lee Speer, 78, of Atchison KS died Tuesday, October 4th, 2016 at Mosaic Life Center, St. Joseph, MO following his wish for a family trip to see Mount Rushmore.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Friday, October 7th, 2016 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. Don was born on August 28, 1938 in Kansas City, KS the son of Virgil & Velma (Wilson) Speer. He graduated from Wyndotte High School in 1956. Mr. Speer was a U.S. Army veteran. He had worked as a welder for T.W. A.  in Kansas City from 1966 to 1999. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher, and presently was an Elder of the church. He attended Pastor’s Adult Bible Class, and many TEAM classes. Don was a Union leader in the AAW, former member of the Jaycee’s, member of the VFW Post # 1175, Atchison, Pineview Golf Course and was an AA Mentor. Don enjoyed running marathons, pitching horse shoes, playing golf, hunting, fishing, playing and coaching softball, and bowling. He also enjoyed creating metal pieces of art, and many friends and family have spark plug airplanes that he made and gave away. He especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

Don was married three times, his first wife was Marvella Sullivan, they were married in June of 1957 and later divorced. His second wife was Kathleen Lowder, they were married in 1970 and later divorced. He was married to Rosalie Denton on July 24, 1995. She preceded him in death on August 25, 2015. 

Survivors include five daughters, Tina (Mike) Fraser, Gardner, KS, Sherry Osborne, Kansas City, KS, Robyn (Jeff) Klawuhn, Rushville, MO, Jenny (David) Funk, Nortonville, KS and Laura (Ryan) Portenier, Atchison, KS., four step sons; Daniel Huffman, Osawatomie, KS., Michael(Tina) Denton, Atchison KS, Duane Denton, Atchison, and Shane (Laura) Denton, Kansas City, MO, Sixteen grandchildren, Six step-grandchildren, Eighteen great grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren.  His parents, wife Rosalie, step son Tom Huffman, and sister, Bonnie Labouff, preceded him in death.

Glenn W. Binder, 96 of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 in Pawnee City, Nebraska.  He was born on March 10, 1920 to Charles J.and Violet Mary (Branek) Binder in Table Rock, Nebraska.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Droge and husband Bruce of Pawnee City, NE, son Kevin Binder and wife Sherri of Elk Horn.

Dale William Wichman, Sr., 71, of Holton, KS, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at a Topeka hospital.

He was born June 6, 1945 in Waterville, KS the son of Ernest Fredrich and Patricia F. (Pickett) Wichman. He had lived in Valley Falls, Clay Center and Oskaloosa before moving to Holton in 1957. Dale attended Holton High School and later served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967.

Dale worked at various auto body shops in Holton and Topeka before opening his own business, Dale’s Body Shop that he owned and operated for 11 years. In 1994 he opened, Dale’s Used Furniture, on the town square in Holton; for over 20 years. He was a member of the Holton VFW Post # 1367.

He was married to Cheryl A. Wehrkamp on August 30, 1980 in Holton. Cheryl survives of the home. Dale is also survived by his mother, Patricia Wichman of Holton, KS; his daughters, Tammy Skelton of California, Elisa Ashcraft-Armstrong (Travis) of Rossville, KS and Jennifer Wingender (Michael) of Netawaka, KS; his son, Dale W. Wichman II (Shannon) of California; his sisters, Carol Searles (Rob Rawlings) of Denison, KS and Amy Spiker (Jared) of Circleville, KS; his brothers, Verlin Wichman (Sue) of Holton, KS, Allen Wichman of Topeka, KS and Kevin Wichman (Sandy) of Circleville, KS; 11 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Cinda Lou (Grieme) Wright, 63, of Denton, Kansas passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Cinda was born on January 19, 1953 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Robert Carl & Anna Lou (Cox) Grieme.

She graduated Platte Business School & worked in administration for years including Wyeth Company & HCC. Then went to work in food services for 20 plus years, retiring from Doniphan West. She loved to cook, especially for Consumer Oil Company, during their end of year celebrations.

Cinda married Dennis Warren Wright on April 28, 1979 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He preceded her in death on December 21, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents & two brothers, Bob & Louie Grieme.

Larry Gene Rose, 53, of Falls City, Nebraska was born December 24, 1962 in Seneca, Kansas to Delbert Leroy and Violet Mae (Bestwick) Rose.  Larry grew up in Humboldt attending grade school in Table Rock and later Humboldt High School. He served in the National Guard Company B 2nd 134th Infantry until being honorably discharged on May 11, 1999. On June 13, 1988, Larry was united in marriage to Margaret Collins in Hiawatha, Kansas.  To this union four boys, Brandon, Alex, Bradly, and Bryan were born.  Larry worked as a mechanic for Sterling Wittwer at John Deere Implement Company in Humboldt, Nebraska for many years.  He had currently been working for New Tech Construction until he became ill.  Larry was a member of the International Union of Operators Engineers Local #571.

Larry passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 26, 2016, at his home in Falls City, Nebraska having reached the age of fifty-three years, nine months, and 2 days.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father Delbert Rose, infant son Alex Rose, infant nephew Dakota Shea Dettmann, infant niece Tyra Rose, and father-in-law Gareld Simpson.

Leslie Jo Boyce, 39, of Sabetha was born on February 21, 1977 in Hiawatha, Kansas.

Jo graduated from Sabetha High School with the Class of 1995. She received her associate degree from Colby Community College. Jo worked as an administrative assistant at J-six Enterprises for many years. Jo enjoyed working with flowers and in her yard. She also had a passion for decorating her home. Jo passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016 at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Lester and Gladys Sylvester; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Betty Wilkinson.

She is survived by her husband, Jason Boyce; her son, Tristan Mikesell; step daughter, Jadyn Graybill; her parents, Eldo and Virginia Sylvester and Dawn Engels; her sisters, Christie (Brian) Strahm, Lisa (Matt) Roudybush and Erin (Curtis) Fraser; her brothers, Eric Peterson and Shane Peterson; grandparents, Ed and Lola Epple and many special nieces and nephews. Edwin J. Nutzman, 87, of Falls City, NE passed away September 30, 2016 at Sabetha, KS.  He was born January 5, 1929 at Falls City to the late John and Sophia (Scholl) Nutzman.

He married Jean I. Schutte on August 2, 1952 at Pawnee City, NE. She later passed away on February 16, 1999.

Edwin was raised in rural Falls City on the family farm.  Once married the couple lived in various locations around Richardson County until they established their home on the family farm 14 miles northeast of Falls City.  Other than farming he enjoyed performing many tasks with his bulldozer. He was a member of the Falls City Rural Fire Department and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his son, Rick Nutzman, and his wife, Susan of Falls City, daughter, Dania Nutzman of Lincoln, NE, brother, Glen Nutzman and his wife, Betty of Monroe, LA, grandchildren, Cozett Knight, and her husband, Isaac of Belton, MO, Devan Nutzman of Vancouver, WA, Derrick Nutzman, Lincoln and two great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Leroy and sister, Marceile Ankrom.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with Wanda Biel officiating. Interment will be at the Williamsville Cemetery to follow.
