LaMar F. Schacht, 92, of Falls City, NE, passed away April 28, 2020 at Falls City. He was born November 30, 1927 at Cook, NE to Elmer and Viola (Grable) Schacht.

He married Lauretta Fischer on November 4, 1946 at Seneca, KS, they later divorced. He married Orlee J. Prater-Titus on November 6, 1999 at Falls City. She passed away March 5, 2019.

LaMar enlisted in the U. S. Army on October 1, 1946 at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He earned a Japan Army of Occupation Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He was honorable discharged September 23, 1947 at Ft. Ord, CA.

LaMar was raised at Cook and graduated Tecumseh High School in 1945. After his discharge he worked construction until becoming employed by the railroad. He retired in 1988. He lived most of his life in Falls City and Salem. He enjoyed music and dancing. He was a member of Good News Assembly of God Church, American Legion Post #102, Falls City Elks Lodge and the Eagles Club at Auburn, NE.

LaMar is survived by his son, Garry and his wife Cherry of Troy, KS, daughters, Carol Zimmerman, Charlotte Gentry and Cindy Sailors all of Falls City, sisters, Donna Jean Hindera of St. Mary’s, NE, Ruth Drake of Humboldt, NE, Sandy Stalder and her husband Duaine of Humboldt, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife.

A family only funeral will be held on Friday, May 8, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Good News Assembly of God Church with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

Friends may attend the funeral but are required to stay in their cars and listen to the service on 90.1 FM. They may follow us to the cemetery but are required to stay in their cars at the cemetery and listen to the committal service on the same radio station.

Margaret Ruth (Schorzman) Ohlmann, 90, of Atchison, Kansas, passed peacefully from this life into eternal life on April 27, 2020, at Atchison Senior Village.

A Christian service of praise and thanksgiving for a lifetime of blessings and salvation will be observed at 9:30 am on Monday, May 4, 2020 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Margaret was born in a sod house in Freeman, South Dakota, on January 29, 1930, the daughter of Jacob and Ruth (Mayer) Schorzman. She attended elementary schools in South Dakota and Texas and high school at Concordia High School, Seward, Nebraska. She attended college and earned degrees at Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska, and Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas.

Margaret taught a total of 11 years in Lutheran Schools in Omaha, NE, Galena Park, TX, and Leavenworth, KS, and one year at the Atchison Catholic Elementary School in Atchison. She enjoyed voice, singing, and was an active soloist for many years. Additionally, she served as a substitute teacher in Atchison Public Schools and worked five years as a switchboard operator at the Benedictine College South Campus.

Margaret was a dedicated wife and deeply supportive of her husband Karl’s ministry in Lutheran schools. Her goals were to walk with Jesus, be a good Christian wife and mother, and a Christian example to her students. She was spiritually committed to share with and edify others on their journey to a better land, always striving to keep her life simple and wholesome.

On July 9, 1954, Margaret married Karl John Ohlmann in Woodland, CA, where they resided in California until moving to Atchison in July 1969. Margaret considered it a true privilege and great service to our Lord that she was able to care for Karl in their home for eight years after his stroke until his passing on September 25, 1998. Their marriage was blessed with five children.

This beautiful angel will be missed here on earth as she begins her eternity in God’s Kingdom. She awaits her two sons, Timothy Ohlmann, Holton, KS; and Paul (Carol) Ohlmann, Lakewood, CA; her daughters, Cynthia (Burdel) Welsh, Las Vegas, NV; Alison (Dan) Strubberg, Bloomington, IL; Susan (Tom) Nunn , China Grove, NC; and her four grandchildren, Jim (Zila) Welsh, Brian Welsh, Joshua (Amanda) Nunn, and Megan Gaboda. Her only sister, Doris Reith, Tempe, AZ, always had a special place in her heart and survives her, along with her nieces Theresa Leyes and Stephanie Reith, and nephew Chris Reith, and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, and cherished stepmother, Josephine Schorzman.

Her children are genuinely thankful to special friends and neighbors for their loyal friendship and love to Margaret during the latter years of her earthly life, enabling her to remain in her home, which she loved and treasured, for as long as possible. They are equally as thankful to the Atchison Senior Village staff that provided her care with great concern and smiles during the last years.

Roscoe Warren “Slug” Daniels, 91, of McLouth, died Sunday, April 26, 2020 at F.W. Huston Memorial Hospital in Winchester.

He was born November 30, 1928 in the Dunavant Community of rural Winchester, the son of Roscoe Vasco and Della May Fidler Daniels. He grew up and raised his family on a farm near McLouth in Leavenworth County. He worked as a heavy equipment operator, working through Union Local #101 of Operating Engineers in Kansas City, MO. He also farmed and raised cattle for many years. He was a member of Mclouth First Baptist Church and the Local Union #101 retirees. 

He was married to Leota Mae Winfrey on December 26, 1949 at Stanwood Friends Church in the Stanwood Community of rural McLouth, She survives at the home. He is also survived by two sons, Jim Daniels, Sunrise Beach, MO, John (Charlotte) Daniels, McLouth, two daughters, Delpha (Ron) Forshee, McLouth, Delia (John) Heston, Oskaloosa, one brother, Robert “Bob”    (Karen ) Daniels, Elk City, KS, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Sue Haling, one sister, Vera Lee Karr and a brother, Victor Daniels.

Richard Jacob Gantz, of Perry, was 85 when the good Lord decided to take him into his arms. He was born February 8, 1935 and died Saturday, April 25, 2020 after a long, hard fought battle with cancer. Through it all, his heart never  waivered. It was filled with the strength and love of his friends and family.

He was the youngest son of Emil Karl and Almina “Minnie” Louise Torneden Gantz. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Mae Gantz and Mildred Hunter and one brother, Karl E. Gantz.

Richard attended a one room school house in Buck Creek from  first through eighth grade, when the school was closed. At the behest of his cousin, George, Richard attended Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence, where he graduated in 1953. While in school, he participated in FFA, football and track.  He always claimed he was the fastest runner in Jefferson County.  He spent time briefly in the National Guard, where he completed basic training and became certified in automotive maintenance before being released back home to help on the family farm. This was the only part of his life where he couldn’t farm. The first part of his life, he worked with his brother, Karl and family on the Gantz Brother’s farm. When Karl passed away, he turned to his sons for help around the farm.

Richard married Vicki  L. Gaines on April 3, 1976 in the Perry United Methodist Church and were married 44 years. They have two sons, William Gantz, Cory (Mindy) Gantz  and daughter, Alison (Arron) Frieze, and one grandson, Declan Frieze, all of Perry.

Richard lived his whole life at one address, doing what he loved. He was always ready to tell you about his hunting trips to Wyoming with his friends or stories of fishing the Kaw River. Many people got to know the joy of those boat rides with him. His smile and laugh will be cherished by all of those who knew him.  Richard milked dairy cows until he was 65. He had his first hip replacement and decided to give it up. Though this didn’t stop him from farming with his son, Cory and best friends, Jim and Dale Robb and Bob and Faye Coleman. As most farmers do, he never retired. You could have still seen him in the fields, planting beans in the spring or picking corn last fall.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, children, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that may as well have been family.

Lisa Schwarzer, 60, Atchison, Kansas, died Thursday, April 23, 2020.

Lisa was born September 18, 1959, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence “Bud” and Sharon (Turner) Mair. She graduated from Atchison High School. Following graduation she attended cosmetology school in St. Joseph, Missouri. Lisa earned her business degree from Northeast Kansas Technical College.

She and Phillip Liebsch were united in marriage in 1982 and later divorced. She was then married to Donald Schwarzer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lancaster, Kansas, in 1993, they were later divorced.

Lisa was employed at Atchison Walmart serving as an associate in the automotive department.

Lisa was a member of First Christian Church in Atchison, Kansas. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and crocheting.

Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Reeves, Atchison, KS, Jessica Schwarzer, Lancaster, KS, her mother Sharon Thomas, five sisters, Karin Dulaban, Atchison, KS; Leslea (Fred) Moranz, Atchison, KS; Denise Arcoren, Gilette, WY; Robin (Cecil) Fowler, Lark Joyner, GA; three grandchildren; Emilee Reeves, Johnathan Reeves and Dexter Gray.

She was preceded in death by her father, a brother, Kevin Mair and her step-father Lester Thomas.

HOLTON- Vera Lucile Shaw was born September 10, 1916, near Valley Falls, Kansas. The daughter of Melvin Earl & Ida Mae “Summerfelt” Irwin. She passed away April 24, 2020 at the Holton Community Hospital at the age of 103.

She attended Pacific Rural School, and graduated in 1934 from Valley Falls High School as the Valedictorian of her class. She taught four years in the rural schools of that area, and one year at Lower Banner County School south of Holton. During that period, she worked four summers at St John’s Camp in Wisconsin. Lucile moved with her parents and family to Denison in 1939. She was an employee of Slimaker Dress Factory in Holton from 1963 to 1970.

Lucile married Joseph Howard Shaw on September 8, 1940 at the family home north of Denison. They spent their entire married life on a farm north-east of Denison. She was a devoted wife and mother. Their home was always open to guest, missionaries, and evangelist who enjoyed the warm hospitality of the Shaw Home.

She was a lover of the great outdoors, and found much pleasure in gardening as well as growing flowers. For many years she was a Denison Builders 4-H Club leader, and was a faithful member of Denison Bible Church.

Lucile was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, on July 6, 1999. Also preceding her in death were her parents; her step-mother, Pearl Tosh Irwin Hower; 5 brothers, George, Earl, Dale, Clarence, and Kenneth; Four step-sisters, Lora Dixon, Eula Colle, Marjorie Goldsberry, and Wanda Bartsch.

Survivors include three daughters; Judy Jones – Holton, Nancy Ulrich (Dan) – Salina, Sarah Phillips (George) – Holton; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Irwin – Topeka; 8 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 Great-great-grandchild; and many nieces & nephews.

Edmund John Theis, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020, at the age of 86. Edmund was passionate about agriculture and dedicated his life to farming and raising livestock, to include registered Angus cattle and swine.

He was born Jan. 15, 1934, in Atchison, Kan., to George Edmund “Ed” and Mary (Wagner) Theis. He attended Potter Grade School and graduated from Potter High School in 1952.

On May 4, 1957, he married Alice Louise Heim at St. Joseph Carmelite Church in Leavenworth. Together they farmed for 63 years under the current farm name April Valley Farms.

He was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association, the Kansas Angus Association, Leavenworth County Beef Improvement Association, St Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, St Joseph Society and the Fraternal order of the Eagles.

He was recognized as a Historic Angus Herd for raising Angus cattle for 50 consecutive years, was recognized as an Honorary Member of the Kansas Angus Association in 2019, received the Leavenworth County Young Farmer Award and named the Leavenworth County Farm Family of the year in 1982. He served on the Farm Bureau and the Big Stranger Drainage Board. He was also a member of the Northeast Kansas Farm Management Association.

Edmund was a member of the Lucky 6 4-H Club as a youth and served as a community leader and project leader for Happy Hollow 4-H Club for 25 years. He was instrumental in the start of the Livestock Premium Auction at the Leavenworth County Fair and the Leavenworth County Beef Improvement Association, being recognized with the Pioneer Award in 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years; four sons, Mark (Kathy), Larry (Nancy) of Leavenworth, Joe (Denise) of Fayetteville, Pa. and Jerry (Tonya) of Leavenworth; a daughter, Paula (Ronnie) Poff, of Leavenworth; six siblings, Jean Marie Brown of Leavenworth, Kenneth Theis of Sugarland, Texas, Donna Haag of Tucson, Ariz., Patricia (Tony) Brox of Lancaster, Kan., David (Ruth) Theis, of Garnett, Kan. and Mary Ann (Gary) Coder of Branson, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Rose Theis of Fairfield, Calif.; seventeen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard, two brothers-in-law, Charles Brown and Fred Haag and a sister-in-law, Carol Theis.

Gary L. Gerdes, 72, of Humboldt, Nebraska passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.

Betty Jane (Volker) Mullins was born at home on the farm northwest of Humboldt, Nebraska on July 6, 1932.  She was the oldest of 3 children born to Herbert Frank and Louise Augusta (Boeck) Volker. 

As a child she loved her dog “Shep” the 3 legged dog.  Her dad had accidentally run over the dog with the sickel mower, cutting off one to it’s legs.  Betty also loved their two horses, Claude and Dase.

As a youngster she attended Prairie Hill grade school , 1/2 mile east and 1/2 mile  north of her farm home.  Later she graduated from high school at Bratton Union in 1950.  After high school she received her teaching certificate from Peru State College.

Betty taught school one year north of Humboldt before meeting Arnold Bents at a summer church picnic at St. James Lutheran Church, rural Humboldt.  She fell in love with the tall lean soldier who had come from Wisconsin to visit his brother,  Rev. Harms Bents, who was the church’s minister at that time.  

Arnold and Betty got married on June 12,1952 at St. James Lutheran Church. They were blessed with three children; Donald Gene, Shirley Marie and Steven Leroy.  In December, 1955, Betty left Nebraska with her three little kids to embark on the adventure of being a military family in Japan.  She joined her husband and lived on Kadena Air Force Base for 18 months before returning to Fort Hood, Texas.

After the couple divorced, Betty raised her three young children with the help of her parents and brothers in Humboldt.  In March, 1965, Arnold was killed in gas station explosion in Fort Worth, Texas.

Later Betty married Gerald Dean and also Warren “Moon” Mullins. Both marriages ended in divorce.

Betty never lacked in motivation, drive and ambition.  She ran the lunch counter  at Hested’s Dime Store in Fall City; she owned the Chat-n-Nibble in Fall City;  Big Red N in Salem and the Camp in Humboldt.  She operated the Cardinal Kitchen and Country Cookin’ cafes.  For a short time Betty also owned Big H Hardware Store in Humboldt.  She was “Grandma Betty” or “Aunt Betty” to lots of kids.

After retiring, Betty enjoyed trips to local casinos; she loved to dance; and listened to all kinds of music and played the accordion and piano.

The love of Betty’s heart was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She really liked playing Dominos!

Betty Jane was a member of the Lutheran Church; past member of the Humboldt Lions Club; past member of Humboldt American Legion Auxiliary; she was a willing worker on the Richardson County Election Board for many years.

Betty Jane became a resident of Premier Estates of Pawnee on October 17, 2014.  She quickly made friends with other residents and the loving staff.  Her favorite times were Friday Bingo, playing dominos, dancing on Karaoke day and weekly devotions led by area pastors.  She passed away peacefully there on April 21, 2020 with family at her beside at the age of 87.

She was preceded in death by her parents, great grandson, Joel Wayne Franzen (2000), great great granddaughter, Aley Lynn Gilmore (2008), sister-in-law, Karen Volker (1996).

She is survived by her 3 children and their spouses; Don & Anita Bents, Pawnee City; Shirley & Willie Wichman, Lincoln and Steve & Joanne Bents, Billings, MT, 8 grandchildren: Jake, Matt, Lisa, Dustin, Steven, Jessica, Sara and Jan, 5 step grandchildren; 7 great grandkids, with one more arriving in May, 6 great great grandkids.  Her two brothers, Laverne (Rusty) Volker and Mervin Volker both of Humboldt and one uncle, Evert Boeck, Smith Center, KS, three nephews, three nieces, and many cousins, friends and neighbors.

Marvin Joseph Winkler, 84, of Seneca, Kansas died peacefully at his home on Earth Day, April 22, 2020, surrounded by his family.  

Marvin was born on September 24, 1935, the son of Eugene F. and Philomena A. (Kongs) Winkler in Goff, Kansas. He was one of five children born to this union.  He grew up in the Kelly area and graduated from Kelly High School in 1953.  

Marvin was united in marriage to Theresa Marie Hermesch on February 12, 1957.  They celebrated 63 wonderful years of marriage together. Marvin entered into farming as a young man in the Corning community.  Marvin and Theresa received several soil conservation honors and received the Kansas Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1971.  He also served on an agricultural advisory council for Congressman Jim Slattery.  They sold their farmstead near Corning and moved to Seneca in 2004.  Marvin continued farming until 2017 when Parkinson’s no longer permitted his active participation.  However, his heart remained in farming with questions about planting, harvest, and baby calves within days of his death.  

Marvin served on numerous boards.  He served on the Nemaha County Cooperative board when the Seneca elevator was being built and was a member of the Rural Water District #3 Board for ten years.  Marvin was active in the Corning community, coached youth baseball, served on the Corning Volunteer Fire Department and was very involved with the Corning Centennial celebration.  He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning for 47 years where he served on the parish council and taught CCD to high school youth for many years.  Marvin was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1769.  Marvin and Theresa provided marriage preparation classes to many young couples in the community.  Later, Marvin and Theresa became parishioners of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca where he was a member of the St. Joseph Society.  Marvin served as an agricultural enumerator for the US Census.  Marvin enjoyed playing cards, square dancing, hunting, traveling and, most importantly, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Marvin was known for his beautiful blue eyes, quick wit and infectious laugh.  Marvin never knew the meaning of ‘stranger’ and made friends of all he encountered.  

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Linus Eugene Winkler and Albert Leo Winkler, and his sister, Eleanor Agnes Hermesch.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Marie Winkler of Seneca; their seven children, Donna (Owen) Zinke, Janet (Tom) Kramer, both of Seneca, Sharon (Morris) Cordes of Houston, TX, Brian (Barb) Winkler of Seneca, Glenn (Kim) Winkler of Colwich, KS, Elaine (Dennis) Ice of Meriden, KS and Nancy (Roger) Dalinghaus of Mission Hills, KS; one brother, Leroy Winkler of Seneca, 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Viewing will be open to the public on Friday, April 24, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Popkess Memorial Chapel in Seneca.  No family members will be present due to COVID-19.

Dr. Terry Lee Harter, 62, of Holton, beloved husband, son, brother, and uncle passed away peacefully at his home on April 21, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born in Humboldt, Nebraska on June 17, 1957, the son of Eugene and Sally (Anderson) Harter.

He attended elementary school in Onaga and Westmoreland, graduating from Westmoreland High School in 1975. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he developed a passion for the healing arts serving at Naval hospitals in Oakland, CA, New Orleans, LA, and Norfolk, VA. Upon discharge he returned to Kansas, enrolling at Kansas State University, Manhattan. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with Honors in 1983 and was accepted at the University of Kansas Medical School, graduating in 1987 with his Doctorate. Dr. Harter served family practice residencies in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the University of Kansas Medical School. Upon completion of his residencies he joined West Side Family Practice in Holton where he served, until he found his true calling as Medical Director at the Prairie Band Potawatomi Health Center near Mayetta in 2005 where he continued to work until his death.

         Dr. Harter was appointed the position of Health Officer on January 1, 1996 for NEK Multi County Health Department by the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. Since that date, Dr. Harter was a part of the health department by functioning as either the health officer or the medical consultant. He was currently Medical Director for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Fire Department since the inception of the PBPN advanced life support ambulance service in July of 2000. He worked closely with the staff, he approved the ambulance service medical protocols, supported the EMS training program and oversaw the patient care quality assurance system for the department. Dr. Harter made sure the Prairie Band nation’s Paramedics and EMTs had the right procedures, training and oversight to provide the high-quality medical cares expected of them. His easy-going pragmatism coupled with his vast medical knowledge enabled him to cooperatively guide the ambulance program to the exceptional service it is today. He was also a life member of the Kansas State University Alumni Association.

         Terry enjoyed living life fully. He cared deeply for family and friends no matter how they entered his life. That compassion extended to friends and most especially to members of the Potawatomi Nation who he served faithfully and cared for as if they were family. All who knew him will miss his quick smile and hearty chuckle; both of which he shared often.

On June 2, 2018 he married his soulmate Tamah Boyce in Valley Falls. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his parents, Eugene and Sally (Anderson) Harter of Westmoreland; three brothers, Jerry Harter (Karen) of Salina, KS; Garry Harter of St. George, KS, Barry Harter of Philadelphia, PA, one sister, Kerri Ebert of Lawrence, KS; two nephews, Ryan Harter (Allison) of Castle Rock, CO, Nicholas Harter (Kylie) of  Colorado Springs, CO; two nieces, Christine Ebert of  Lawrence, KS and  Monica Ebert of Cape Town, South Africa; step son, Craig Gunther of Lawrence, KS; father and mother-in-law, Wilbur and Mary Boyce of Valley Falls, KS; brother-in-law, Mark Boyce of Valley Falls, KS; sister-in-law, Sharon Ramsey (Rich Heuertz) of Valley Falls and her daughters, Lacey Darveaux, Sarah Jones (Jett) and four great nieces, Lillian, Isabella, Gretchen and Dahlia.

         He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Perry Leslie Harter; his maternal grandparents, E.A. and Mildred Anderson and his paternal grandparents, Howard and Sylvia Harter.

Denny L. Holle, 77, of rural Hiawatha, with family by his side, died Sunday evening, April 19, 2020, at his rural home.

Denny was born at Greenleaf, KS, December 8, 1942, one of five children born to Lawrence and Rosy Holle (Craig). He attended Shaw Country School and then went to Barnes High School. After school, Denny did the farming and chores at their family farm.

Denny married Bethel in 1974 and they made their home in Hiawatha, Ks where he lived the rest of his life. Denny worked for Flair Fold for 37 years until they closed. He then worked at Wilde Tool Company for 5 years and then retired. To say Denny was an avid garden tractor puller was very much understated!

Denny is survived by 5 step-children: Cindy (Allen) Wisdom of Falls City, Ne., Ida Stonebarger of Marysville, KS, Marie (Steve) Waterman, Frank (Lorrie) Jorgenson and Amy Jorgenson all of Greenleaf, KS, a nephew David (Laura) Holle of Hiawatha, KS; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren (one unborn),  2 great nephews, 1 great niece, 1 Great-great nephew and 1 great-great niece.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Bethel and a granddaughter Jennifer Wenzel, brother Verlin Holle, sister-In-Law Shirley Holle.

Stanley Herbert Witt, 87, died peacefully on April 13, 2020 at The Reserve in Spring Hill TN.

Stanley was born May 15th, 1932 to the late Herbert and Henrietta (Herbster) Witt in Falls City, NE. Stanley graduated from Morrill High School in 1950. He was a lifelong livestock and row crop farmer. He was also heavily involved with 4-H, and officiated high school basketball for 40 years. He also loved playing cards.

He was married to Donna Knox in 1955 for 32 years. They had two sons: Scott Richard Witt and Todd Herbert Witt.

Stanley is survived by his sons, Scott Richard Witt (Elizabeth-Jane) of Spring Hill, TN and Todd Herbert Witt (Annette) of Bartlesville, OK, his 5 grandchildren, Danielle Witt of Birmingham AL, Nolan Witt of Columbia TN, Thomas and Joseph Frey and Rowan Witt of Spring Hill, TN, and two sisters, Karolyn Chadwell (Bernard) of Morrill, KS. and Irene Clossen of Sabetha KS.

There will be a celebration of life in Sabetha or Morrill, KS at a later date.

Kathy Ann Piper, 60, of Huron, KS died on Sat. April 18, 2020 at her home.

Kathy was born on Oct. 24, 1959 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Delbert and Anna (Wood) Fitkin. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1978 and had attended the Northeast Kansas Area Vo-Tech School for a short time. She had worked as a machine operator for the Atchison Leather Company. Kathy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed her dogs, reading, sewing, bird watching and growing plants.

She was married to Mark S. Piper on Dec. 15, 1981. Mr. Piper preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 2018. Survivors include three sons; Steven Piper, Norton, KS, Luke (Jessica) Piper, Oregon, MO, and AJ Piper, Huron, KS, a sister Tammy Harmon, Kuna, ID and two grandchildren Ethan and Evan Piper, Atchison, KS. and her aunt Irene Wood, Seattle, WA. Her parents, husband Mark, a still-born daughter Sarah Piper, a brother Steven Fitkin, and two twin sisters, Patty and Peggy Fitkin preceded her in death.

Herman “Junior” Zwahl, 95, of Wetmore, KS died Monday, April 20, 2020 at the Sabetha Manor.

He was born in Wetmore on September 24, 1924, the son of Herman H. and Maggie M. (Hall) Zwahl. He graduated from Wetmore High School in 1942.

After graduation, Junior was employed by the Rail-Road that ran through Wetmore and then later picked up cream and hauled bulk milk into the Sabetha Creamery.

Junior enjoyed gardening, giving away his vegetables, mowing and trimming, and you could always find him on his small Ford tractor rotary mowing. He took pride in trying to produce the first local ripe tomato.

Herman was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil L. Zwahl; and a nephew, Todd Zwahl.

Survivors include a sister, Eldred L. Pfrang of Sabetha; one brother, Floyd A. Zwahl of Wetmore; two nieces, three nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Patricia Ann “Pat’ Wagner, 84, of Hiawatha, with family by her side, died Sunday evening, April 19, 2020, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital where she had been for patient several days.  She previously had been a resident of the Pines, and recently Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.

Pat was born in Sabetha, July 7, 1935, one of three children born to the late Ira “Mart” and Mary Catherine Lock Parks was a lifelong resident of Hiawatha.  Pat attended Hiawatha schools, later graduating high school with the class of 1953 where she was a majorette for the marching band.  She later graduated from Highland Junior College with an associate’s degree in business. She worked as a secretary for Brown County Services for the Elderly for a total of 21 years, first for Don Neff for 7 years, Bob Cash for 14 years, and later for Steve Ward, before retiring.  Pat in conjunction with her ‘day’ job, she was also sales woman for “Stanley Home Products, Inc.” for over 50 years.

After her future husband Gerald K. Wagner, returned from the Korean Conflict, they married October 12, 1959 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hiawatha which they were longtime members.  She also was a member of the Altar Society of the Church; and the ladies auxiliary to VFW Post #5210, also of Hiawatha.  They made Hiawatha their home all of their married life where they raised their five children: Danielle, Bobette, Cress, Dirk, and Nicole.  Saying Pat enjoyed playing bridge was an understatement!  She and Gerald enjoyed playing cards with several different couples through the years.  Their family enjoyed family outings, and boating at the Horton Lake.  The Wagner family was always known to be a fierce competitor when it came time for the Hiawatha Halloween Parade and enjoyed participating for many years when the kids were still at home.  Gerald died March 28, 2006.

Pat was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Charles and Robert “Bob” Parks, and her half-sister Alma Ruth “Skippy” Muth.

Survivors include her children: Dani Wagner (Irene); Bobi Dozier (Pete) and their children Katie Jo Underwood (Eric), Alexandria Wilson (Jon), Tiffany Lammon, and Gavin Dozier; Cress Wagner (Paula) and their daughter MaKayla; Dirk Wagner (Anna) and their children Austin, Blythe, Gabriel; Nicki Limron (Gregg) and their daughters Kalli and Julia; and two great-grandchildren: Izayah and Julian (Alexandria and Jon).

A private family graveside services will be held Thursday, April 23, at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, with Father Daniel Gardner officiating.

Mary Faith Dalinghaus, 92, of Seneca, went to her heavenly home, Sunday, April 20, at Life Care in Seneca. She was born January 23, 1928, at Baileyville, Kansas, the daughter of Josephine (Fangman) and Frank Kohake.   She attended school at Axtell and Baileyville and graduated from Baileyville High School. She attended Mount Saint Scholastic and Emporia State Teacher’s College.   After her first year at the Mount, she accepted a teaching position, in Home City, Kansas, and taught there 2 years.

She married Bernard Joseph Dalinghaus on October 27, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville.   The couple celebrated 40 years marriage before his death in 1989.   To this union were born 3 children, Karen (Carol Leo) Heiman, Janet (Melvin) Heiman, and Joseph (Marty) Dalinghaus.

Mary Faith spent their early married years working beside her husband in the fields and doing chores of all kinds. Later, she taught school at St. Patrick’s in Corning, St. Michael’s in Axtell, in Beattie, and finished her long teaching career in Marysville.   She was both a classroom teacher and the principal several years at St. Michael’s.   Midway through this teaching career, she returned to college at Kansas State University to get her bachelor’s degree.   When she finished this career, she continued as a substitute teacher in many districts for quite a number of years.

Mary Faith enjoyed her children and grandchildren and their activities.   One of Mary’s favorites was attending their religious activities.   She was a member of the ACCW and served as treasurer. She also enjoyed playing cards, playing bingo and traveling to many spots both stateside and abroad. Before she and Ben moved to Seneca in 1988, Mary was a lector at Sacred Heart.   She was active in Saint Peter and Paul as a communion distributor both at church and the hospital for many years.   She also was a faithful member of the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her siblings, Rita (Vincent) Wietharn, Helene (Aloysius) Dalinghaus, and Giles Kohake. In addition to her children, Mary is survived by 10 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren, and one sister-in-law Rosella Kohake.

Delores J. (Bockerstette) Goens, 74, of Fairview, Kansas passed away Thursday, April 16, 2020.

Delores was born February 7, 1946 to Frank and Anna (Lackey) Bockerstette in Sabetha, Kansas. She attended school in Sabetha and graduated with the class of 1964. She was united in marriage to Larry Goens on June 10, 1963 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha.

Delores worked various jobs throughout her life, including Hallmark, the Port of Entry, Fountain Villa and Buzz’s Cafe. She retired in 2008 from SKF Chicago Rawhide in Seneca, Kansas. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, baking and camping with friends. Delores was a member of the BPW, Venture Touring Society, the Moose Lodge of Topeka and Good Sam’s Club.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Goens of Fairview, KS; two sons, Brian (Jennifer) Goens of Liberty, MO and Brad Goens (Andrea Aeschliman) of St. Joseph, MO; three grandchildren, Megan Goens, Aaron Goens, and Zachary Goens all of Liberty, MO; two sisters, Mildred Emme of Phoenix, AZ and Norma (Mike) Salter of Sabetha, KS; and one brother, Gene (Peg) Bockerstette of Cut Off, LA.

Betty Jane Heim, 94, of Holton, KS, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Medicalodge Jackson County. She was born November 27, 1925 in Sparks, KS, the daughter of Thomas Freeman and Maggie Mae (Bale) Carter.

Betty attended Horton and Troy High Schools. She had lived in the Holton Community since 1954 and previously in Horton. She and her husband Ed owned and operated Heim Bakery in Holton from 1954 – 1977. She also worked as the Food Service Director for Holton Schools USD 336 from 1965-1990.

She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Holton Business Women, V.F.W. Post 1367 Auxiliary, American Legion Post 44 Auxiliary and Holton Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Betty married Edward Carl Heim in February 1947 at Horton, KS. They celebrated over 41 years of marriage. Edward passed away on June 12, 1988. She was also preceded in death by 8 siblings.

Survivors include her 2 daughters, Rose Clark (Hugh) and Carla Baum both of Holton, KS; 2 sisters, Barbara Cirkel of Oklahoma City, OK; Sue  Carol Willis of Mesa, AZ; 2 grandchildren, Randee Balocca (Mark) and Scott Sigmund; 4 grandchildren, Thomas Noble, Baylie, Tanner and Logan Sigmund; 6 step-grandchildren, Cindy Gentry (Shane) Mickey Parsel (Mike), Brett Balocca, Daniel Clark (Aspa), Todd Clark (Kelly) and Amanda Chang (Terrance); 5 step-great-grandchildren, Sean Parsel (Lauren), Shelby Mangus (Devin), Kristy Martin (Jacob), Ryan Gentry and Coleman Clark; 1 step great-great granddaughter, Laila Balocca.

Shirley A. Simmons, 75, of Highland, a loving mother, friend and retired nurse, died of cancer April 15, 2020 in Wathena KS.

Shirley is survived by sisters: Kennetta Slavin and Vicki (Lonnie) Gray; Children: Wayne Simmons, Gloria Simmons, Lori Simmons and Jerry (Samantha) Simmons; 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren with one on the way.

She was preceded in death by parents:  Kenneth Hobbs, Doris Phillips Hobbs, daughter Ruth Ann Simmons, son Kyle Simmons and grandson Jeremy Tilton.

Shirley was born April 3, 1945 in St. Joseph MO. Attended Elwood schools.  At age 21 she got her GED. After working many jobs she got into the medical field becoming a CNA, certificate restorative aide, and home health aide. In 1989 she went on to become an LPN.

Shirley's values were strong: Love the Lord with all your heart, put blood family first and respect others.

Her favorite quote is "Remember in the darkness what He taught you in the light"
Growing up she went with family every Friday to Murphy's to eat cat fish. She said it was the best in town.

At age 67 she took a trip with her sister Vicki and family and Jerry and family to go white water rafting. She enjoyed every minute of it.

She loved chocolate and coffee. Milky Way candy bars were her choice and at one time was up to 52 cups of coffee a day.

Her favorite movie was To Kill A Mockingbird; book: the Bible and "Come Share The Being" Dance: jitterbug; youth singer Elvis; Group: LAMB; song "Holy Water"

Shirley wants everyone to remember she loved the Lord and her family more than anything.

(LaVoris) Maxine Corbet (93) passed away peacefully Sunday (April 12, 2020) morning at Maple Heights Nursing Center in her hometown of Hiawatha, Kansas. Her daughter Carolyn Rosenberger was by her side, holding her hand, at the time of her passing.

Maxine was born on December 3, 1926, north of Hiawatha at the home of her parents Ernest and Beulah (Starrett) Jimeson. She attended the one room Hart Grade School and graduated from Reserve (Kan.) High School in 1944. While working as a soda jerk at Spaulding’s Drug Store in Hiawatha, she met a man whom everyone just called Kenny. On March 9, 1947, she married that man, Kenneth George Corbet, at the Reserve Christian Church. They would spend the next 55 years like two peas in a pod before Kenny passed away on August 18, 2002. Maxine and Kenny spent the first 20 years of their marriage on farms in northern and eastern Brown County before moving to Hiawatha in the spring of 1967, where she would spend the rest of her life.

With her husband Kenny working countless hours to provide for her and their six children – Steve, Jim, Debbie, Max, Alan and Carolyn – Maxine was the ROCK of the family. She created a loving atmosphere for her sons and daughters, and their many friends, which brought the greatest joy to her life. She was a mother who was always there to provide love, compassion, sympathy and hard knocks when needed.

One trait that always stood out was her cheerful and fun disposition, which endeared her to her grandchildren. Born happy, she left this world content. She was one who never took life too seriously, and that included herself. Growing up during the depression she learned to become one of the most resilient people a person would ever meet. While life would be throwing curve balls and hard balls her way, Maxine understood from an early age to keep swinging and eventually the hits would come her way. While times could be tough and some meals might consist of ham salad (bologna) sandwiches or macaroni and eggs with pork and beans, she was also a master chef who could always provide a full course meal at any time, and on time, for whomever stopped by.

Along with her full-time occupation of loving wife and mother, Maxine also found time to serve as a cook at Hiawatha High School. She was an active member of the Alta Vista Club, the Rainbow Club, the Red Hat Club, Eastern Star and many church circles. The Reserve Christian Church where she grew up, and the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha where she worshiped her adult life, provided her with a solid foundation. Outside providing support at home for her devoted husband Kenny, the church is where Maxine volunteered countless hours. From helping prepare dinner for a grieving family, applying makeup and sewing clothes for the annual live nativity scene at Christmas, to just cleaning the kitchen and taking out the trash, the church is what inspired her. She passed this inspiration along to her family and many others.

Maxine is survived by her sons Steve Corbet (Judy) of Clearwater, Florida; Jim Corbet (Toni) of Biloxi, Mississippi; Max Corbet (Belinda) of Boise, Idaho; Alan Corbet (Tina) of Kansas City, Missouri; and daughters Debbie Heaton (Jim) of Dallas, Texas; and Carolyn Rosenberger (Richard) of Hiawatha. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and her sister Mary Ann Hards (Delmar) of Everett, Washington.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Kenny, her parents Ernest and Beulah Jimeson, and sister Fran Owen (Tracy) of Seattle, Washington.

Frederick Allen Petesch, 57, Lincoln, NE, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2020, with his wife by his side after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Fred was born June 11, 1962 in Salina, KS, the son of John and Cratis Petesch.  He graduated from Atchison High School in 1981.  He served in the United States Army for three years and then contracted with the Army for 35 years as a helicopter mechanic.  Fred proudly worked beside soldiers maintaining military helicopters in Desert Storm, Bosnia and Iraqi Freedom.  He lived in Germany for 20 years and learned to speak the language.  He loved to share his travel stories.  Fred ended his career in Lincoln, Nebraska working for the FFA as an Aviation Safety Inspector (Airworthiness) in what he called his dream job.  There he was surrounded by amazing and wonderful people.  Fred had a passion for flying since he was a boy and a successful career in aviation.  He was a private pilot and a certified A&P mechanic with an inspector authorization.  An adrenaline junkie enjoying cycling, kite surfing, weight lifting and snowboarding, he had a very active life.

He is survived by his wife, Julie (Turner Lowe) of the home, his parents, John and Cratis Petesch, Easton, KS, siblings, Shirley (Joe) Catone, Texas, John Petesch, Horton, KS, Kathy (Lowell) Thornton, Topeka, KS, Coleenn (Gerald) Frans, St. Joseph, MO and several nieces and nephews.

Shane H. Fitzpatrick, 54, of Effingham, KS died on Monday, April 13, 2020 at his home following a battle with cancer.

Shane was born on December 16, 1965 in Salina, KS the son of Norman Keith and Lynne (Heberly) Fitzpatrick. He attended Atchison County Community High School and Beloit Technical School. Shane worked as a heavy equipment operator for Potts Construction and many other construction businesses. He was a member of the Local Union# 101 Heavy Equipment Operators and enjoyed hunting, fishing, demolition derby cars, mushroom and bird hunting.

Survivors include his fiancé’, Shawn McNea, Effingham, KS, a son, Casey Fitzpatrick, Leavenworth, KS, a daughter, Chelsie (Cory) Brown, Olathe, KS, his father, Norman K. Fitzpatrick, Effingham, KS a brother , Gary Fitzpatrick, Hiawatha, KS, a sister, Lynne Kurtz, Effingham, KS, three grandchildren; Caleb, Chandler, and Brinley Brown and several nieces and nephews. His mother preceded him in death.

Harvey Vollmer, 83, of Falls City, NE, passed away April 14, 2020 at Falls City. He was born March 16, 1937 at Falls City to Herbert and Hilda (Eickhoff) Vollmer. 

He married Donna Gilkerson on August 29, 1959 at Falls City. She passed away July 29, 2018.

Harvey was raised on the family farm northwest of Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1954. He started farming with his father, they raised livestock and had a dairy. He farmed with his bother following the death of their father, purchasing the entire farm in 1995 and retiring in 2007. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (6 miles north of Falls City).

Harvey is survived by his children, Richard and his wife Nancy of Rulo, Debra Hauck and her husband Kevin of Fremont, NE, Mike and his wife Toni of Falls City, Kevin and his wife Julie of Verdon, sister, Dorothy Nolte of Humboldt, NE, fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Harold and Edward and a great-granddaughter, Alexis in infancy.

A private family graveside committal of cremains will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery with Reverend Daniel Gifford officiating.

A public memorial service will be held at a later date.

Christopher D. “Chris” Wilderson, 64, Atchison, Kansas died Monday, April 13, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital North in Kansas City, Missouri.

Graveside services and burial will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Alderson Cemetery. Due to the current restrictions, the family would invite friends, but please remain in their cars and along the roadway at the cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the family to assist with a future Celebration of Life for Chris and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with whom final arrangements have been entrusted to.  A register book will be available for the public on Friday, April 17th from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. 

Chris was born December 30, 1955, in Atchison, Kansas the son of Charles Raymond “Bud” and Dorothy (Torkelson) Wilderson.  He attended Franklin Elementary School and graduated from Atchison High School.   He then attended Highland Community College, Highland, Kansas and Missouri Western State College, St. Joseph, Missouri and Northeast Area Vocational Technical School in Atchison, Kansas.  He also attended Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas for electrical code review.

Chris served for many years as maintenance director at Atchison Senior Village Nursing Center in Atchison until his health failed.  He also formerly was employed at Kair Radio in Atchison as a radio host.  He also had formerly been employed with Saunders Mop Factory in Atchison and Crockett Electric in Leavenworth and a nursing home facility in Platte City, Missouri.

He and Norine M. Chalfant were united in marriage on December 30, 1987 at the United Methodist Church in Atchison.  He and Norine spent many years together as soul mates and best friends.

In his spare time he enjoyed playing music in many bands, fishing, camping and enjoyed his time on Kair Radio and most especially the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.  He played in one of the first bands called Vortex at Warnock Lake parties.

Survivors include, his wife, Norine of the couple’s home in Atchison; a son, Matthew (Denise) Wilderson, Kansas City, MO; a step-son, Rick (Penny) Wilburn, St. Joseph, MO; a step-daughter, Lois (Steven) Servaes, Atchison, KS;  a sister, Beth Crockett, Leavenworth, KS; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Carl William Meyer, Jr., 91, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Monday, April 13, 2020 at the Sabetha Community Hospital. 

Carl was born December 15, 1928 to Carl W., Sr. and Minnie (Kroemer) Meyer in Preston, Nebraska the youngest of four children. He started school in September of 1934 at Mason Hill, south of Bern, Kansas and graduated 8th grade in 1942 from Bern Grade School. In 1945, the family moved to the farm in the Woodlawn area. He farmed with his father until 1952 and then continued on his own. 

On October 23, 1955, Carl married Verlas Mae Mogler in Algona, Iowa and celebrated 63 years of marriage before her passing in June of 2019. Carl served in the Kansas Army National Guard as a Mess Sergeant from 1948 to 1956. He was a farmer and stockman until health issues in 2012 caused him to slow down and eventually stop in 2018. Carl also operated a small dairy from 1950 to 1960. He also did Capioma Township road maintenance for several years. Carl was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church and served as a deacon, trustee, and song leader for many years. 

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verlas on June 7, 2019; his brothers, Walter in 1936, and Fred in 1974; and his sister, Mary Montgomery in 2020. 

He is survived by his son, Gary (Deb) Meyer of Sabetha, KS; his daughter, Nancy (Wayne) Osterhaus of Seneca, KS; seven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. 

A Private Funeral Service will be held Friday, April 17, 2020 at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha with Pastor Andy Smith officiating. Viewing will be open to the public on Thursday, April 16, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.  Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren, Jeremy Meyer, Kristina Kuebler, Jackie Cox, Kyle Cossel, Joe Meyer, Kipp Cossel, and Kristin Tangeman. Interment will be made in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Paula Marie (Ott) Segrest, 67, of rural Hiawatha, died Monday morning, April 13, 2020, at her home.

Paula was born at Hiawatha, August 20, 1952, the only child born to Dr. J.W. and Oneita Ott and had lived in Hiawatha nearly all of her life where she graduated from Hiawatha High School. She also graduated from Highland Junior College with an associate degree in business.

Paula was one of the first EMT’s in Hiawatha, working for Frank Davis for Town & Country Ambulance Service. She also worked for Stuart Lay surveying for a short time. Paula enjoyed working as the records clerk for the Brown County Sheriff Dept. for over 26 years, before retiring, and considered everyone there her extended family.

Paula took up several causes through the years with her being very dedicated to the Brown County Humane Society, and Brown County Genealogical Society. Paula grew up in the Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha. One of the things she enjoyed was visiting Mustang Island, Texas in 2008.

She married Ronald Haze Segrest February 2, 1991 in Hiawatha. They lived just outside Hiawatha where they have several dogs/cats and ponies to take care of for the Humane Society, and loved every minute of it. He survives.

Survivors include her daughters: Niki (Jason) Tollefson and Erin (Jesse) Hughes. Also surviving are her 5 grandchildren: Kyle and Kade Tollefson, and Dawson, Taylor and Kaitlyn Hughes, all of Hiawatha.

Private graveside services were held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiated.

Nancy Ann Lowe, 83, of Effingham, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2020 at her home.

She was born on July 13, 1936 on the family farm Southwest of Effingham, Kansas, the daughter of Leslie and Beulah (Page) Delfelder. Nancy attended grade school for 8 years at the Pleasant Vale (formerly Holister) and graduated from ACCHS in Effingham, Kansas. After graduation she married Donald Edward Lowe at the Effingham Union Church.

Nancy worked for the Motor Vehicle Department in Topeka, Effingham Coop, Treasurer for the City of Effingham, bookkeeper for Effingham Diamond View Apartments, and later president of the Board of Diamond View Apartments, Dr. Francisco's Medical Clinic, Atchison County Conservation District and Calvin's C Store in Effingham. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Horton, where she was a past elder and Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Red Hat Ladies, Happy Hour Club, Bunco Club, Community Club and Effingham Library Board. Nancy enjoyed reading, making jewelry, embroidering, cross word puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Shirley (Jim) Eckert of Effingham, Kansas, Donald Rex (Patty) Lowe of Kirwin, Kansas, Dennis Lowe of Atchison, Kansas, Susan (Donnie) Bonjour of Centralia, Kansas, David Lowe of Effingham, Kansas; seventeen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sister, Brenda Kay (Lloyd) Reichart of Valley Falls, Kansas; brother, Johnny Delfelder of Oskaloosa, Kansas; sister-in-law, Ofelia Delfelder of Wichita, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, William, her husband and brother Larry Delfelder.

Friends may call on Thursday and Friday at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. There will be a private graveside service and burial at the Claytonville Cemetery Northeast of Horton, Kansas on Saturday.

Daisy Mae (Ray) Kiefer of Blue Springs, Missouri, formerly of Muscotah, Kansas passed away on April 11, 2020 at the age of 93.

Daisy was born in Kapioma Township in the Effingham, Kansas area on March 9, 1927. She was the youngest of eleven children born to Eliga and Grace (Rodkey) Ray. Daisy's mother died 10 days after she was born. Daisy was raised by her father and older siblings. She attended Rose Valley Grade School and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, Kansas.

Daisy was a member of the Muscotah United Church where she helped teach Sunday School, Bible School, and was a member of the Bible Study group. She also served on many committees where she helped cook, serve, decorate and clean up for all kinds of events. Daisy was a member of the Muscotah Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron. Daisy was also involved in the Rose Valley 4-H Club and served as sewing leader for several years. She and Dale were involved with the Atchison County Dairy Board and participated in the Effingham Fair for many years. Along with being a mother, homemaker, dairy farmer's wife Daisy worked at Lassen's grocery store, cooked for the Muscotah Grade School, worked at the Horton Garment Factory and Muscotah Post Office.

After she and Dale moved to Muscotah she served on several committees and volunteered whenever needed. Daisy lived a life of helping others. She made beautiful weddings, wallpapered peoples houses and could sew anything! She loved to make quilts and her grandchildren loved Grandma's homemade noodles.

After Daisy moved to Horton, Kansas she joined the Red Hat Society, served on the Arbor Knoll Board and enjoyed getting together with friends. Daisy moved to Blue Springs, Missouri and lived with her daughter, Judy and son-in-law Alan for 9 years. Daisy volunteered in her grand daughter's classroom. The students loved reading to "Grandma Daisy." Daisy moved to Benton House Assistant living of Blue Springs and was there for one year before passing away.

Through all of those years family was so very important to Daisy. She tried to attend as many of the grand and great-grand children's activities as possible. She was a real cheerleader! Daisy and Dale were married for 52 years. They had two children, Judy Mae and Jimmy Dale.

Daisy is survived by her daughter, Judy Michelson (Alan), Blue Springs, MO, three grandchildren, Deana Flax (Kelly), Blue Springs, MO, Dustin Kiefer (Emily), Basehor, KS, and Kelly Gigstad (Shane) Olathe, KS; and 9 great grandchildren: Jordan and Jacki Sloan, Jenna Flax, Clarissa and Adriana Kiefer, Kiefer Ewy, Chase, Oliver and Silas Gigstad. Daisy leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Daisy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dale, son Jimmy, five sisters, Geneva Ferrell, Gertrude Schneider, Bessie Monson, Leota Hollis and Susie Justice, five brothers, infant Charlie Ray, Samuel Raphael Ray, Martin Ray, Albert Ray and Ralph Ray.

Arlene Edmond, 88, of Wetmore, KS passed away April 10, 2020 at her home. She was born June 4, 1931 in Maryland, the daughter of Elwin and Coony Rose (Myer) Stebbings.

Arlene worked as a Control Panel Assembler for Square D. Electric in Peru, IN. She was also a homemaker.

She married Robert W. Edmond on February 11, 1945 in Elkton, MD. He preceded her in death on January 25, 2009. She was also preceded in death by a sister and 9 brothers.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Mable Edmond of Topeka, KS and Ruth Lundgren of Elkhart, IN; a son, Robert M. Edmond (Rhonda) of Wetmore. She is also survived by many grand and great-grandchildren.

Terence Thomas “Terry” “Wamego” Butler, 52, of Lawrence, KS, passed away April 10, 2020 at his home after a sudden illness. He was born April 21, 1967 in Oklahoma City, OK, the son of John Thomas Butler and Margaret Mahkuk.

Terry graduated from Royal Valley High School in 1986 and from Ventura College in California with his Associated Degree. He proudly served in the Army National Guard.

 He worked as a customer service representative in Medicare for over 5 years.

 Terry was a member of the Native American Church and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

He married Charlene Louise Lewis on September 12, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV. They celebrated over 11 years of marriage.

 Survivors include his wife, Charlene Butler of the home; mother, Margaret Mahkuk of Mayetta, KS; father, John T. Butler of Cinnaminson, NJ; son, Bryce Butler of the home; 2 step-daughters, Pamela Sanchez and Chelsea Lewis both of Topeka, KS; 2 step-sons, William Matchie and Brandon Sage both of Topeka, KS; sister, Nevika Mahkuk of Tulsa, OK and several step-grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by a sister Tracy Mahkuk.

Geraldine “Geri” (Noland) Kellenberger, 87, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Thursday, April 9, 2020 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.

Geri was born on January 4, 1933 in Wilson, Kansas the daughter of Kenneth and Martha (Shrieve) Noland. She attended school in Wilson and graduated with the class of 1951. Geri then moved to Kansas City where she attended and graduated from Trinity Lutheran with a degree in nursing. 

She was united in marriage to Lynn Kellenberger in 1962 in Englewood, Colorado.  Geri and Lynn moved to the Kellenberger family farm located north of Sabetha in 1964.  She worked during her career as a nurse for the Hiawatha Hospital, Sabetha Hospital, and Fountain Villa in Sabetha. Geri was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sabetha.

Geri enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, was an avid reader, and spent her time caring for her grandchildren.  She was a big supporter of Sabetha athletics and rarely missed a game.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Nannette Anderson.

Survivors include her husband, Lynn Kellenberger of the home; three daughters, Jana (Richard) Werner of Manhattan, KS, Cheryl (Steven) Cook- Keim of Healy, KS, and Michelle Kellenberger-Koch of Sabetha, KS; nine grandchildren, Tethnie (Carlos) Carrillo, Tanya (Clint) Castor, Britta Thompson, Landon (Andrea) Keim, Martha (Travis) Moore, Shelby (Laura) Koch, Kahlin Koch, Lane (Maria) Koch, and Tristen Koch, and several great grandchildren.

Linda K. Winzer, 72, of Atchison, KS, passed away Friday, April 10, 2020 at the Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.

Linda was born December 2, 1947 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Ernest and Pauline (Hansen)   Yeigh.  She was part owner and operator of Winzer Brother Trucking Company and she also was a  house cleaner.  Linda was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS.  She enjoyed traveling, going to the casino with her mom, crocheting, reading, crafts and her plants.

Linda married Everett Winzer on August 17, 1974 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS.  He preceded her in death on December 12, 1987.  Survivors include a cousin Myrna McConnaughey, aunts, Gladis Bewley and Rene Hansen, brothers in law, Robert and Ollie Winzer, Sister in law, Reona and Ted Johnson and lots of cousins and nieces and her fur babies Coco, Ginger and Mojo.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Vivian Marie Hooper, 90 of Atchison, KS, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at her home.

Vivian was born September 29, 1929, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Emil and Lottie (Wycoff) Wohlgemuth.  She attended White Clay Elementary School and graduated from ACCHS in 1947.  Vivian was a homemaker for most of her life, but had worked as a bookkeeper for Hooper Fina Service Station. She was a lifelong member of Camp Creek United Methodist Church.  Vivian enjoyed antiquing, boating, the family vacation house in Colorado and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Marjorie “Marge” Dettman, 89, of Falls City, NE, passed away April 8, 2020 at Falls City. She was born January 31, 1931 at Falls City to Emmit and Ella (Hunker) Fisher.

She married Loy Dettman on April 12, 1959 at Falls City. He passed away January 15, 2012

Marge was raised in rural Rulo, NE and graduated Falls City High School in 1948. Following graduation she worked at Hested’s for several years. When married the couple established their home on a farm northwest of Stella. She spent many hours working on the farm and helping Loy milk cows and also did custom harvesting and hay bailing. She enjoyed gardening and canning. Up until her later years she remembered many people on their birthdays with a card, Loy never went a day without a homemade pie in the refrigerator. She made many batches of homemade ice cream with the fresh cream from their dairy. She attended Stella Community Church.

Marge is survived by her daughters, Judy Ivey and her husband Bob of Falls City, Kristy Fischer of Stella, NE, grandchildren, Lindsay (Trent) Holscher of Ogallala, Lacey (Cody) Guthals of Falls City, Brooks Ivey of Lamoni, IA, great-grandchildren. Dylan and Wyatt Holscher and Watson Guthals. She was preceded in death by her her parents, husband, brothers, Robert and Lester Fisher, sisters, Helen Ruth, Dorothy and Betty Jean all in infancy.

Private graveside service will be held on Monday, April 13, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Steele Cemetery with Pastor Mike Hader officiating.

Anita Esther Horn, 99, of Atchison KS died on Monday, April 6, 2020 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Anita was born on May 23, 1920 in Palisade, NE the daughter of John A. and Arletta E. (Sanders) Horn. She graduated from Palisade Rural High School in 1938 and attended Mt. St. Scholastica College , receiving her diploma in May, 1942. She had also attended the University of Kansas and Emporia State Teachers College. “Miss Horn” was a devoted school teacher for USD #409 from 1942-1985 in the Washington and Central Schools of Atchison. Although never married she had many children who looked up to her as a role model and guide. Many of her former students stayed in contact which was a real delight to her. Anita trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at a young age after hearing a gospel message given by John Walden of Colorado. She spent many years fellowshipping with the Gospel Hall in Atchison and more recently the Riverbend Bible Church, now at the same location. Anita enjoyed sharing her love of Jesus with others.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, a life member of the National Education Association and Kansas State Teachers and City Teachers, AAUW. She enjoyed traveling overseas, Europe, and twice to France & Switzerland, she had traveled into most of the states, Cuba and Mexico. She also enjoyed reading, taking care of her cats and corresponding and visiting with friends.

Anita is survived by cousins and a host of other friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Arletta Horn.

Ruth Ann Klahr, 71, of Holton, KS, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 5, 2020 at her home. She was born November 5, 1948 in Holton, KS, the daughter of Jack Randel and Agnes Norene (Sawyer) Tannahill.

Ruth graduated from Soldier High School in 1966 and also Clark’s Business College. She worked for Willies Steak House, State of Kansas, Oldham’s, and Country Mart. She later worked at Sac N Fox Casino in the Players Club; retiring in 2005. She enjoyed being a farmer’s wife and working on the farm.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Netawaka, Ladies Aide at the church and the Home Circle Club.

Ruth married Delmer Lee “Corky” Klahr on September 28, 1968 in Netawaka. They celebrated over 51 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Corky Klahr of the home; 2 daughters, Dana Klahr and Darla Ingels (Jeremy) both of Holton, KS; a sister, Janice Uhl of Holton, KS; 2 brothers, Jackie Tannahill (Joleen) of Soldier, KS and Ronald Tannahill (Tina) of Abilene, KS and 4 grandchildren, Hunter and Gable Howerton and Katelyn and Kinsley Ingels.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Raymond Tannahill.

Sarah “Earline” Pugh, 92, of Mayetta, KS, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2020 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka, KS. She was born March 1, 1928 in Grove, KS (north of Silver Lake), the daughter of Earl Johnson and Effie L. (Moats) Tibbs. She graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1945 and had attended Clark’s Business School in Topeka.

Earline worked for the Water Company in Topeka and for the Kansas Treasurer and Insurance Commission in Topeka where she worked in the vault verifying stocks and bonds for banks.

She was a member of the Potawatomi United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Extension Homemakers Unit and was very much involved with the Mayetta Mustangs 4-H Club.

Earline was united in marriage to Marshall Ivan Pugh on September 15, 1946 in Topeka, KS. They shared over 56 years of marriage before Marshall passed away on August 3, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a great-great grandson, River Kane.

Survivors include 4 children, Russell E. Pugh (Lesa) of Hoyt, KS, Warren M. Pugh (Tina) of Mayetta, KS, Janet E. Heath (Doug) of Edmond, OK and Joyce Hale (Aaron) of Mayetta, KS; brother, Edgar W. Tibbs of Mesa, AZ; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Arland Luray Grand Pré, 79, Cummings, Kansas died Sunday, April 5, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Arland was born September 11, 1940 in Hanover, Kansas the son of Harland Luray and Edna Grieveldinger Grand Pré. He attended schools in Atchison, Kansas graduating from Atchison High School.

Arland and Sandra Sue Linden were united in marriage on November 25, 1961 at Sacred Heart Church in Atchison, Kansas.

He served as an Atchison police officer for the Atchison Police Department and also was employed with Midwest Grain Products Company until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Benedict Parish. In his spare time Arland enjoyed woodworking, hunting, family vacations, auto repair and most especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra, of the couple’s home in Cummings, KS; two sons, Michael L. (Corina) Grand Pré, Buhler, KS; Randy L. (Sara) Grand Pré, Valley Falls, KS; a daughter, Shelly S. (Timothy) Grand Pré -Stout, Cummings, KS; two sisters, Jane Seager, Atchison, KS; Marilyn Grand Pré, Atchison, KS; nine grandchildren, Jason (Rebecca) Grand Pré; Christine (Corie) Grand Pré - Dunn; Amy (Nick) Stout-Noll; Stephen (Nichole) Grand Pré; Matthew (Ashley) Stout; Courtney (Andrew) Grand Pré -Page; Tiffany (Brent) Grand Pré -Schuler; Mallory (David) Grand Pré -Akins; Jacob Grand Pré (Fiancé, Anita Muniz), thirty-two great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Debra Grand Pré.

Wesley Lee Meyer, 63, of rural Hiawatha passed away with his family and close friends by his side on April 4,2020.

Wes was born December 7, 1956 in Horton, Kansas to Roland and Thelma (Slater) Meyer the youngest one of three children.

He grew up on the farm and attended Hiawatha Schools, graduating with the class of 1974. After graduation he worked on the farm till 1984 when he moved to Fort Scott, Kansas where he was the owner of a convenient store until 1985. He moved back to the farm in 1987 when he started his lifelong employment at Hiawatha Implement where he earned the Master Service Technician Certificate. He retired in 2019.During his time at Hiawatha Implement, he was also the owner and operator of Meyer Custom Bailing for several years, raised cattle and in his spare time, worked on tractors for area farmers and friends in his shop. Wes was also in an investment club. While some people worked to live, Wes lived to work.

Wes enjoyed river float trips with close friends, parties and get togethers in his shop. His shop was his home away from home. As well as four wheeling with his best friend,  Alvin Waggoner, carving names into limestone rocks, a very special talent, and shooting pool. He started shooting pool at a very young age at Strahan’s Recreation in Hiawatha. And he continued shooting on Pool Leagues with Arley Hedrick, Jim Siebenmorgan, Chris Torkelson, Ed Brassfield, Bob Smith, and sometimes even his wife, Theresa. He laid his pool stick down five years ago when cancer wouldn’t allow him to shoot any more. Brady Chadwell was a close friend and a serious business partner and was very helpful till the very end. Wes loved farming, bailing hay, raising cattle and the pride of his life, his grandchildren. A quote from Jaxon,  ”grandpa can fix it, he can fix anything”.

Wes and Theresa Hammersmith were married on September 28, 2012    . She survives of the home. Also surviving is a daughter Jennifer (Pennington) Blauw and her husband, Jeff of Olathe, Kansas. Two Step-sons, Christopher and (Courtney) Torkelson Horton, Kansas and Ryan and (Kelle) Meininger of Hiawatha,Kansas. his grandhildren Corbin, Harper and Paisley Blauw.  His step-grandchildren,  Joshua Smith, Jaxon and Jhett Torkelson. Also, surviving is one niece Tammy Terveer and a sister-in-law Ella Lewis Hiawatha, Kansas, and a host of great nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert who passed away in 1953, his sister, Ramona (Meyer) Kinsley in 2004 and two nephews, Gary Kinsley in 1976 and Greg Kinsley in 2019.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday April 8th from 10-4. A private family graveside will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery.

James Bradley “Brad” Banaka, 52, of Topeka, KS, formerly of Netawaka, KS, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2020 at his home with family by his side from complications from heart disease. He was born July 3, 1967 in Topeka, KS, the son of James “Jim” and Janet Kay (Sharp) Banaka.

Brad graduated from Jackson Heights High School in 1987. He lived in Topeka since 2015 and most of his life in Netawaka, Whiting and Holton.

He worked for 10 years at Goodyear Tire Company, worked on the Keystone Pipeline in Nebraska and had been a chef at Highland Community College. Brad had been disabled since 2010 due to heart disease.

He married Jennifer Dawn Rehl on June 2, 2012 in Circleville, KS. They celebrated over 7 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Jennifer D. Banaka of the home; his father, Jim Banaka of Netawaka, KS; 2 sons, Jeremy L. Banaka of St. Joseph, MO and Timothy J. Banaka of Grandview, MO; step-son, Christopher Henningsen of Arlington, TX; 2 step-daughters, Elizabeth Henningsen of Ft. Worth, TX and Emily Henningsen (Bradley) of Topeka, KS; 3 sisters, Janelle Bell (Brad) of Trenton, TX, Jerri L. Denton of Wardville, MO and Julie A. Shook (Zane) of Carbondale, KS and a granddaughter, Luna Nicole Dixie Banaka.          

He was preceded in death by his mother, Janet Kay Banaka and 2 nephews, Wyatt Shook and Logan Denton.

Samuel L. Jacobson of St. Joseph MO died on March 23, 2020.

Samuel was born August 30, 1941 in Horton Kansas, the youngest of three children born to Irene Reece Jacobson and Thomas Jacobson. He served in the US Army in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1962, at the rank of PFC.

He was preceded in death by parents, his sister Donna Richard, Topeka KS.

 He is survived by his sister, Carol Jacobson, Kansas City Missouri, two nephews, Christopher Larson, KCMO, residing in Saudi Arabia, and Jonathan Larson, Joplin Missouri, and by his niece, Laura (Stanley) Hart, Carbondale, Kansas and her two children, Courtney (TeeJay) Hart and Dakota Hart.

Samuel will be buried in the Horton Cemetery.

Lura Arline (Arnold) Herr, 94, life-long resident of Richardson County, passed away Monday, March 30, 2020 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Lura was born June 8, 1925 on the family farm 2 miles south of Barada, Nebraska, the fifth child and only daughter of Nick and Nellie (Dunn) Arnold. She attended grade school at District 24, the Arnold school, on the corner of her parent’s farm. Upon completing her time there, she moved on to the Barada school, and eventually the Falls City high school where she graduated in 1942.

Upon completing high school, she went to Peru (NE) State Teacher’s College where she earned her one-year Rural Teaching Certificate. In the fall of 1943, she began teaching at District 81, the Silver Creek school in Richardson County where she would be for the next three years. At that point, she was offered the teaching job at her “home” school, District 24, the Arnold school. She taught there for two years. During those years, she attended summer school at Peru and earned her two-year teaching certificate which would allow her to teach in town schools.  In the fall of 1948, Lura moved to Humboldt and began teaching in the Humboldt public school system. She taught there only two years however, as, in those days, married women could not be teachers and she had met Osmer Herr, a local farmer, whom she married on June 11, 1950 at the Humboldt Methodist Church.  To this union were born two daughters, Nancy and three years later, Jorene. When the girls were old enough, Lura was their 4-H leader.

As was customary for farm wives in the 1950s and 1960s, besides raising her girls, Lura raised a large garden and loved to be in the outdoors. Most springs could find her wandering the Barada Hills for morel mushrooms and her summers planting, weeding, harvesting and preserving the bounty of her garden.  Lura was active in her community. She was known to be there whenever a family member or neighbor needed help, often driving elderly members of the county to medical appointments in distant cities. She was nominated for and honored to receive the Knights of Aksarben’s “Good Neighbor of the Year” award in 1982.  Her church was dear to Lura. She was active in the United Methodist Women’s (UMW) organization, holding various offices, and was the Sunday school superintendent as well as  a long-time teacher of Sunday School classes. In the days before there was a UMW, she was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild for which she was president for several years.  She lived on the family farm about 5 miles northwest of Humboldt from her wedding until the autumn of 2004 when she and Osmer moved to Humboldt in order to stay in town over the winter. Osmer passed away the following summer, one day short of his 90th birthday.

Lura is survived by her daughters, the Reverend Nancy (Jim) Phillips of Omaha and Jorene Herr of Humboldt, two granddaughters, Kelli (Scott) Brandt of Nebraska City and Julie (Terry) Frampton of Omaha, two great-grandsons, James and Levi Brandt, and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a private interment. Memorial service details are pending and will be announced at the conclusion of the covid-19 emergency.

Visitation for public will be held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2020, at The Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt.

Interment will be at the Humboldt Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Humboldt United Methodist Church or the Bruun Memorial Library of Humboldt.

 Keith Eric Eubanks, 60, of Denison, KS, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at Community Hospital in Onaga, KS. He was born July 8, 1959 in Holton, KS, the son of Paul W. and Carolyn K. (Tolbert) Eubanks.

He graduated from High School in 1977. Keith was a “Jack of all Trades”. He worked for Northeast Kansas Environmental Service, Flexel, Jackson County Zoning, King Engineering and U.S.D. 336. He was a member of the Denison Bible Church.

Keith married Debora “Debbie” Kay Taylor on May 20, 1989 in Holton. They celebrated over 30 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Eubanks of the home; 3 daughters, Abby Stous (Darin) of Manhattan, KS, Bailey Eisenbarth (Eric) of Holton, KS and Samantha Correll (Jacob) of Denison, KS; 3 brothers, Mike Eubanks (Brenda) of Holton, KS, Jeff Eubanks (Beth) of Topeka, KS and Stan Eubanks (Peggy) of Kansas City, KS and 7 grandchildren, Raegan, Leighton, Kinsington and Harper Stous, Zoey Eisenbarth and Greysen and Oakleigh Correll.

Keith enjoyed outdoor activities; including fishing. He was a loving husband, dad, grandpa and brother. Keith also had an amazing sense of humor and some memorable sayings: “What’s kickin chicken” and “Finer than a frog hair”.

He will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. There will be a Celebration of Keith’s Life at a later date.
