Dennis F. Hadley, 63, of Topeka, KS, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2020 at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO. He was born August 8, 1957 in Wichita, KS, the son of Enos and Beverly (Sullivan) Hadley.

Dennis attended Topeka High School and graduated from Salina South High School. He graduated from Hutchison Junior College with an Associates Degree and also from Colorado School of Banking.

Most recently, he was Senior Vice President at Bank of the Flint Hills for 8 years. Dennis was Senior Vice President at Denison State Bank in Holton for 18 years and was a loan officer Highland Park Bank for 10 years. 

He was a member of Hoyt United Methodist Church and former member of the Board of Directors at the Colorado School of Banking. Dennis was an active in the communities he worked; including Economic Development Boards, Chambers of Commerce, etc.

Dnnis married Teresa Sims on October 3, 1981 in Hoyt; they celebrated over 38 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Hadley of the home; daughter, Ashley Clark of Topeka, KS; 2 grandchildren, Audrey and Hudson Clark; father and mother-in-law, Wendell and Jean Sims of Hoyt, KS; sister and brother-in-law, Deitra Troxel (John, Sr.) of Hoyt, KS; 2 nephews, John Troxel, Jr. and Nathan Troxel; step-mother, Elizabeth Hadley of Illinois; step-sister, C. Gail Storch (Joe) of Illinois and step-brother, Roland Lis (Dawn) of Illinois.

Rose Rottinghaus Heiman, 86, of Axtell, KS passed away Saturday evening, August 29, 2020, at Marysville Community Hospital in Marysville, KS.

Rose was born on February 28, 1934 on a farm north of Corning, KS, the daughter of Henry & Magdalen Steinlage Rottinghaus. Rose was one of ten children. At the age of 10 her mother died of a brain tumor, diagnosed after an autopsy. Rose went to school at St. Bede’s Grade School and graduated from the 8th grade. After she graduated from the 8th grade, she helped on the family farm, until she married Jerald Heiman on August 4, 1956 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Rose gave birth to four children, Brad, Denise, Greg, and Bruce. After her children graduated Rose obtained her GED, so she was a high school graduate. She also farmed along side of her husband north of Axtell for 45 years before moving into Axtell.

Rose had several interests in her life, playing bridge, sewing comforts, and painting.

Rose was a member of St. Michaels’ Catholic Church in Axtell. She was a member of the St. Michael’s Guild serving as an officer; she also cared for the altar linens for 29 years before retiring. She will be missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by husband Jerald of the home; and children, Denise Heiman of Axtell, Brad (Kass) Heiman of Axtell, Greg (Judy) Heiman of McPherson and Bruce (Kim) Heiman of Summerfield; 14 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. In addition to her brothers, Marcellus Rottinghaus of Overland Park, KS and Ray Rottinghaus of Seneca; her sisters, Helen Lierz of Savanna, MO, Mary Sieben of Prairie Village, KS, and Dorothy Hammes of Seneca; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by her father in 1993, her mother in 1944; her brothers, Ed in 1990; Bernard in 2008 and Clarence in 2016; and a sister, Rita Gockel in 2015.

Rosaries will be prayed Tuesday at 2 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca and 7 PM at St. Michael’s Church in Axtell. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at St. Michael’s Church in Axtell. Burial will be in the St. Michael’s Church Cemetery at a later date.

Carol A. Wagner, 85, formerly of Atchison, Kansas died Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Hillside Village in DeSoto, Kansas.

Carol was born October 6, 1934 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Garrett) Anslinger.  She attended Atchison Public Schools and graduated from Atchison High School.  

She and Charles R. Wagner were united in marriage on February 17, 1955 at St. Benedict’s Church in Atchison.

Carol served as a secretary and receptionist for Atchison Presbyterian Church, Mall Towers at Atchison Housing Authority and Heartland Dental Office until her retirement.

She was an acitve member of St. Benedict Parish; a member of PEO Chapter FT and volunteered for the former Atchison Shepherds Center and with her husband staffed the Amelia Earhart Festival information booth.  She enjoyed quilting, reading and tending to her flower garden.

Survivors include her husband, Charles R. “Charlie” Wagner, Atchison, KS; three daughters, Jennifer (Kevin) Gigstad, Nortonville, KS; Stephanie (Tom) Nichols, Shawnee, KS; Angela (Russ) Seybert, Atchison, KS; three sons, Gregory (Robyn) Wagner, Cummings, KS; Richard (Kathy) Wagner, LaMars, IA; Jeffrey (Bev) Wagner, Atchison, KS; a sister, Jan Rusher, Bixby, OK; seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Kathryn Wagner.

Martha B. Harring, age 55 of Tecumseh, passed away Friday, August, 28, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society-Auburn.

Survivors include her fiancé David Troeger of Tecumseh; sons Thomas Root and fiancé Christa Pagnano of Dawson, Matthew Harring of Tecumseh; brothers Eric (Linda) Harring of North Carolina, Michael John Harring of North Carolina; special friends Fina O’Brien of Topeka, KS, Barbara Barnes of Holdrege, Linda Schultz of Tecumseh; other relatives and friends.

Clara Marie Seitz, 93 of rural Burchard passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at her home.  She was born on January 1, 1927 to Foy and Esther (Lineweber) Doty in rural Burchard, Nebraska.

Lynne Ann Mulroy, 76, of Holton, died Friday August 28, 2020 at her home.

She was born April 18, 1944 at Axtell, the daughter of Wayne and Mildred Bergman Neff.  She attended Sts. Peter and Paul School in Seneca, graduating from high school in 1962.  She later graduated from the House of Heavlin Beauty College in Kansas City, Missouri.

 Lynne was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton and the Altar Society.  She was in charge of decorating the church for ten years and also decorated numerous weddings.  She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi.  Lynne was President of Holton Main Street and a member of the Chamber of Commerce, in which she was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.  Lynne was well-known in the community for founding the annual holiday window painting project to support Holton Main Street.  She was instrumental in the design, funding, and installation of the Holton sign project on The Square.  Lynne was named Holton Main Street Volunteer of the Year in 2011. 

Lynne was an avid flower gardener.  She was honored with both Jackson County Yard of the Month and Yard of the Year by the City of Holton.  She was a HGTV enthusiast and loved decorating, especially at Christmas.  The Mulroy home was opened for the Holiday Homes Tour three times to support the American Cancer Society, an organization dear to Lynne's heart.  Lynne loved filling her home with family, friends, and laughter.  Her five grandchildren were her world.   

She worked as a hairstylist for the Menninger Foundation in Topeka and owned and operated The Beau-tique in Seneca. She was a Department Manager at Walmart, worked for sixteen years at Holton National Bank, owned and operated Li'l Bits Children's Clothing Store, and was a Mary Kay consultant for sixteen years.

Lynne married Rich Mulroy on June 12, 1965 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.  They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage.  He survives, of the home. 

Other survivors include a son, Shane Mulroy (Janice), Circleville; two daughters, Shara Sevart (Aaron), Augusta and Shanna Schimke (Kelly), Oskaloosa; one sister, Layna Lackey, Topeka; and five grandchildren, Mallori, Makinley and Madden Mulroy, and Korynn and Keagan Schimke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Laine Tangeman. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 4th at St. Dominic Catholic Church.  Burial will follow in Mt. James Leonard Barker, 77, of Atchison KS died on Friday, August 28, 2020 at his home.

Graveside service and burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at the Sumner Cemetery with Pastor Ken Watkins officiating.  The body has been cremated. James was born on March 22, 1943 in Atchison, KS the son of James and Ollie (Gilliland) Barker.   James worked grain car loader for Con-Agra Foods for over 22 years.  He enjoyed yard work and cars.

He was married to Norma A. Kirsch on April 11, 1981 at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. She preceded him in death on May 22, 2012.  Survivors include one son, John (Trina) Cole, Lees Summit, MO; four daughters, Theresa Kendall, Atchison, KS, Barbara (David) Menschik, St. Joseph, MO, Valerie (Craig) Miller, Fairfax, VA, Victoria (Curtis) Blanke, Abilene, KS; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren, Sisters Ollie Mae Winzer and June Newcamp.

His parents, wife Norma, Sister Suzie Barker and his cherished dog Blondie preceded him in death.

Dorothy A. Lentz, 76, Atchison, Kansas, died Wednesday, August 26, 2020, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Funeral services will be Monday, August 31, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Dorothy was born September 13, 1943, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Rupert and Edith (McCorkle) Hollingsworth. She attended Washington Elementary and Trinity Lutheran School before graduating from Atchison High School in 1962.

Dorothy was married to Jerry Marshall in 1963, in Kansas City, Kansas. Mr. Marshall preceded her in death. She and Pat Mitchell were united in marriage on February 1, 1975 at St. Benedict’s Church.  Mr. Mitchell preceded her in death on February 29, 2008. Then on July 7, 2012, Dorothy and Vincent Lentz were united in marriage in Potter, Kansas. 

Dorothy was employed at Bradken for over 35 years.  In her retirement she and Vincent spent several years at their home in San Benito, Texas during the winter months.

Dorothy was a member of the Catholic faith.

Dale Edward Navinsky, 67, of rural Cummings, KS, died Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Mosaic Life Care Center in St. Joseph, MO.  Dale was born September 19, 1952 at Atchison, the son of Charles E. and Mildred Katherine Wahaus Navinsky.

He was a 1970 graduate of Jefferson County North High School in Winchester.  He worked as a welder and fabricator for many years, retiring from  We-Mac Manufacturing CO, in Atchison.

Dale is survived by a brother, David (Laurel) Navinsky, Washington, KS, brother-law, Don Schmelzle, Nortonville, two nieces, Brandi Miller, Kelly Wenzel and a nephew, Brian Navinsky. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Linda Kay Schmelzle.

Patricia Louise “Pat” Bennett, 91, of Seneca, died on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at the Life Care Center in Seneca.

Pat was born on August 22, 1929 in Centralia, Kansas to Frank and Florence Searing Schubert. She graduated from Centralia High School.

She married Eugene R. “Gene” Bennett on May 24, 1948 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. The couple bought and made their home a farm north of Kelly and ran it for over 41 years where they milked and farmed the ground that they loved. Pat also worked for Luella Bennett at Florence Ann’s Dress Shop; in addition, she was an Avon distributor. She enjoyed helping woman feel beautiful with Avon and enjoyed visiting with her customers. She and her husband Gene, celebrated their 40th, 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries and treasured 66 years of marriage prior to Gene’s death on July 9, 2014.

Pat was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca and a past member St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict and St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. She served on the Nemaha County Election Board for the Adams Township for numerous years; as well as the Nemaha County Extension and Homemakers Unit. For over 50 years Pat was a volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile; as chairman and an avid donor. She was also an active member of the Centralia Saddle Club. Pat gave of her time generously; she enjoyed volunteering. She also enjoyed playing cards, crocheting and bowling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Charles Schubert, Mary Wilcoxen, Alvin Schubert, Elsie Hollman, Carroll Schubert, Freda Schuetz, Cecelia Reinhardt and Donnie Schubert.

Patricia is survived by children, Michael (Debbie) Bennett of Seneca, Carol (Eric) Buetzer of Topeka, Bonnie (Mike) Enneking of Hiawatha and Steve (Brenda) Bennett of Seneca; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 P.M. on Friday evening, August 28th at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 9 A.M. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Leo Frank Kruse, 97, of Sabetha, peacefully passed away August 26, 2020.

He was born in rural Hamlin, Kansas on February 5, 1923, the son of Daniel and Amalia Brockhoff Kruse.  Leo attended primary school at Hamlin, and spent one year at Hamlin High School, where he left in 1939.  As a child, he loved playing with grasshoppers, so he earned the nickname “Grasshopper.”  People who knew him well called him “Grass” for short.

He married Bertha Gerdes on November 7, 1943, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairview, Kansas.  Leo worked as a tractor mechanic for Alvin Dietrich in Falls City, Nebraska.  In 1948, he started farming on the David Stewart farm and in 1954, moved to the Lewis Helvern farm.  He drove semi-trucks for James Bartram from 1964 to 1984, when Bartram sold his trucks.  Leo also farmed for himself, until he “officially” retired in 2014.  He still liked telling his son and grandsons how to farm, even after his last harvest!  Some of Leo’s free time was spent playing cards, watching the news, and watching ball games on television. 

Every time that any of his grandkids came to visit, his eyes would light up with excitement and joy!  He always told them how he was going to “learn” them something!  He was a huge fan of Bertha’s cooking, especially her peaches, which he continued to ask for during his last hospital stay. 

Leo was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Fairview, where he had served as trustee through the years.

Survivors include his wife Bertha of Sabetha, a brother Kenneth Kruse (Mary Sue) of Arkansas, grandchildren:  Jeremy Kruse (Christy) of Wamego, their children Emma, Jack, EllieKate; Jamie “Boog” Kruse (Teri) of rural Morrill, their children Maggie (fiancé Lane Holliday), Morganne, Jared; Janie Murk (Eric) of Junction City, Kansas, their dogs Lily and BJ.

Preceding him in death are his children:  Larry, Darlene, and Jann, daughter in law Kathryn Kruse, parents, and eleven siblings.

A Celebration of Leo’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 31, at Zion Lutheran Church Hiawatha, with Pastor Michael Dunaway officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home from 12 noon until 6 Sunday afternoon.

Gary F. DeVault, 71, formerly of Wathena, Kansas passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020.  

Gary was born on December 24, 1948 to Fay and Elsbeth “Elsie” (Werner) DeVault.   

He was truck driver.  

Gary married Darlene (Proctor) Snodgrass on August 18, 1984 in Blair, Kansas. She preceded him in death on December 13, 2009. He was also preceded in death by parents and brother, Jack DeVault.

Patricia Lee Koelliker, 79 of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2020 at the Maple Heights Nursing Center in Hiawatha, Kansas.

She was born on September 20, 1940 in Horton, Kansas the daughter of Francis "Pike" and Sarah "Tillie" Hogue. She graduated from Horton High School, then attended Emporia State College before transferring and graduating from Highland Community College. Pat worked as teacher's aide prior to going to work as a secretary for several banks in the Kansas City area, before retiring.

She was very active with the 4-H program for 24 years, being a leader and helping with the Wyandotte County 4-H drill team. Pat was a active member of the First Christian Church, singing in the choir and helping with other church functions. Pat loved reading, spending time with her children and granddaughter and one of her favorite quotes, "Love You A Bushel and A Peck".

On October 29, 1960 she married Donald "Gene" Koelliker at the Horton First Christian Church, they were married for 58 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Melinda (David) Gee Jr. of Kansas City, Kansas; son, Michael Koelliker of Horton, Kansas; granddaughter, Alexis Nicole (Jesse) Page of Parker, Kansas; great grandson, Henry Robert Page and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Gene on October 30, 2018.

Robert Abraham Meyer was born February 26, 1935 to Eli Meyer, Sr. and Emma (Edelman) Meyer.  He was born in the Meyer home built by his grandfather, Abraham Meyer.  

Robert’s early years were spent on the family farm near Bern.  In the late 1950s, Robert served his country as a medic in the US Army.  Upon returning home, he began his farming and livestock career on the family farm.  

Robert’s contributions to the Bern community include being involved with the founding of Nemaha Rural Water District #1 in the 1960s.   He served on the Board for many years and in semi-retirement from farming, he became Well Systems Manager, a role he held for 22 years.  In recognition, he was awarded Operator of the Year in 1989. Enjoying woodworking, Robert spent many of his retirement years in his woodshop crafting beautiful pieces of furniture his family treasures greatly!

Robert married Janet Kay Nelson at the Nelson family church in Neola, Iowa on April 12, 1964.  Committing their lives to Jesus Christ, they were baptized in 1974.  Robert and Janet were blessed with five children.  

Robert was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Kristine; his granddaughter, Natalie Kay Baumgartner; his parents; two brothers, Herbert and Eli Jr.; and three sisters, Lois M. Meyer, Nadyeen Edelman, and Alma Steidinger.

Survivors include his wife Janet of Sabetha and his children: Jim (Kristin), Kim Baumgartner (Jeff), Carla, all of Bern and Matt (Kate), of Sudbury, MA, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  Also surviving is Robert’s sister, Mary Helen Neukomm of Cissna Park, IL.

James Frederick Menold, 78, has begun his eternal life in the presence of Jesus, having passed from this life on Monday, August 24, 2020 due to a number of health ailments following hip replacement surgery.

James was born at home in rural Sabetha, Kansas on September 16, 1941, the fourth of John & Dorothy (Kaeb) Menold’s ten children. He married Louise Steidinger on February 22, 1964. Committing their lives to Jesus Christ, they were baptized together in 1973. James loved his wife and cherished having her by his side, especially in his final days.

James graduated 8th grade from Albany School and loved to tell how he would have been valedictorian if not for his one other classmate. At 14, he started grading roads for Berwick Township, and following many years of farming, seven years at Wenger Manufacturing, assisting in his sons’ farming operations, and countless hours cutting hay in an old windrower, he spent his last working days again grading roads for Berwick Township.

James was passionately interested in planes, trains, and automobiles. He could spend hours talking horsepower, tinkering with old machinery, or reading about World War II history. Yet, he was just as moved by the finer things. He loved birds, trees, the Colorado mountains, and gospel music as long as it didn’t have any of what he called “that boomety boom.”

James loved people and cared passionately for the state of their souls. He wanted to make sure his friends knew about salvation through Christ. His vulnerability in talking about his own faith struggles brought others to faith, beginning with his nine children – all of whom are walking with the Lord.

Proverbs 17:6 says “Children’s children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their fathers.” James loved his family, and his family loved him. Nowhere was this more evident than on his deathbed, where he was literally surrounded by family singing him home as he took his final breath.

James is survived by his wife, Louise; his children, Dean Menold (Sheri), Victor Menold (Jananne), Dayton Menold (Wanda), Terry Menold (Dayra), Diane Strahm (Michael), Christopher Menold (Amy), Myreon Menold (Lori), Rodney Menold, and Jamie Bahr (Scott); 35 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He also survived by siblings Miriam Strahm (Clayton), Alice Steidinger, Judy Edelman (Eugene), Marge Edelman (Morris), Helen Meyer (Leroy), Joann Edelman, Don Menold (Pat), and Wilma Kauffman.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Menold; stepmother, Loree Menold; his brother, Leroy Menold, brothers-in-law, Donald Steidinger, Fred Edelman, and Steve Kauffman; and his grandson, Andy Jon Strahm.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a visitation at the Apostolic Christian Fellowship Center (1441 Virginia St., Sabetha) on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 6:00-8:30 pm. Ed Bauman, 66, of Falls City, NE, passed away August 24, 2020 at Lincoln, NE. He was born June 1, 1954 at Falls City to Charles and Verna (Curfman) Bauman

Ed was raised at Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1972. He began working at the Atchison, KS Grain Elevator, following a work accident he became disabled and has lived in Falls City since, except for living in Topeka for a few years. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Virginia A. Pethoud, 83, Falls City passed away August 24th, 2020. She was born on May 8, 1937 to Kenneth and Marjorie (Coleman) Pelton.

Virginia graduated from Beatrice High School in 1954. On January 30, 1955 she married Marvin Pethoud in Beatrice. Marvin passed away on December 13, 2008.

They moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1959 where Virginia was employed at Lowry’s Air Force Base.

In 1972 the family moved to Mitchell South Dakota where Virginia was employed at the Johnson Furniture store.

In 1974 they moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Virginia worked at the VA Hospital until moving to Falls City in 1975 where she and Marvin purchased the Hested Store, later named the Falls City Department Store. They also opened the Falls City Shoe Store and Falls City Men’s Clothing Store.

Virginia worked at the office of doctors, Couse and Slominski then went to work for FmHA until retirement in 1998. Virginia was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by daughters, Sue Allen, Mitchell, SD; Pam (Bruce) Merz, Falls City, NE; Sons, Mike (Gloria) Pethoud, Adams, NE and Tim (Rita) Pethoud, Cozad, NE; grandchildren, Vicki (Jack) Bangert, Jamie (Erik) Haug, Sarah (Rick) Waldron, Melissa Milliken, Mitch (Amanda) Merz, Amber Allen, Marie (Matt) Behrends, Trevor (Lisa) Merz, Brian (Lynn) Pethoud, Nicole (Monty) Witt and Kayla Pethoud; Step-grandchildren; Kevin (Kirsten) McAuliffe, Gina (Mike) Lempka and John (Amanda) McAuliffe; 29 great-grandchildren.

Darren Andrew Blandin, 55, of Horton, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 13, 2020. He passed doing what he loved, being out and exploring nature.  

He was born on July 16, 1965 in St. Peter, Minnesota the son of Thomas and Esther Jensen Blandin. He attended Powhattan grade school and was a Red Devil. He then went on to attend Inter Mountain Inter Tribal School in Utah. He was ordained as a Reverend. Darren had worked in date entry, also worked as a welder/fabricator for Uni-Corp. for numerous years, manufacturing tank parts for the U.S. Government. He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone, however he was able. Everyone he met enjoyed his company. He was very outgoing and made friends easily.

Survivors include, his loving mother, Esther Blandin of Hiawatha, Kansas; his son, Waylon Finch-Blandin of Powhattan, Kansas; sister, Denise Patterson of Horton, Kansas; brother, Kevin Blandin of Horton, Kansas; along with numerous nieces and nephews; loved ones and also various friends throughout his life. He was a member of the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska. He took pride in his heritage and his spirituality.

Darleen J. Flentie, age 81, of Topeka, formerly of Centralia, Kansas passed away Sunday morning, August 23, 2020 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.  Darleen was born June 9, 1939 in Vermillion, Kansas the daughter of Paul and Kelma (Cullimore) Watts.  She married Elton Flentie March 15, 1955 in Topeka.  He preceded her in death March 4, 2005. Elton and Darleen made their home north of Centralia on the family farm, Alfalfa Plains.  Darleen owned and operated Flentie’s Retail Liquor, worked at CR Industries, served as Seneca Golf Course clubhouse manager and worked at the Hayes-Popkess Mortuary in Centralia.  She was a member of the East Centralia Community Church (formerly the Centralia Congregational Church), where she served as a deaconess and taught Sunday School and was on the church board of directors.  She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and served as a Farm Bureau Women’s Leader and was on the State Women’s Committee.  She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. 

Darleen is survived by a son, Keith W. (Carol) Flentie of Topeka; a daughter, Debra (Ray) Downing of Topeka; a sister Kelma “Tomi” O’Connor of Manhattan, KS; four grandchildren, Dustin (Hannah) Flentie, Shayla (Darren) Rottinhaus, Mark (Julia) Downing and Kristina (Nick) Landkamer and seven great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Elda Joy Watts.

Ruth Boomgaarn 97 of Pawnee City, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Premier Estates.  She was born on March 24, 1923 to Earl Thomas and Mary Ellen (Wanrow) Clark.  She was born at home near Baileyville, Kansas.  Ruth was one of seven children.

The family moved to a farm in the Humboldt, Nebraska area where she attended country school.  In 1932 the family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she attended school.  The family later moved to a farm Northeast of Table Rock, Nebraska in 1936, where she finished grade school.

On January 4, 1943 she was married to Otis Boomgaarn.  To this union a son Larry was born.  They lived on a farm northwest of Table Rock, Nebraska, where they raised livestock and grain.  Ruth liked to make quilts, also embroidery, plus crocheting work.  She was a member of St. Anthony Church and a member of St. Anthony’s Alter Society.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Mary Clark, husband Otis, great grandson Jalyn Crosley, brother’s,  Fran Clark and wife Clara, Kenneth Clark and wife Lucille, Duane Clark, sisters, Esther Warren and husband Dean, Rita Kent and husband David, Joan Retzlaff and husband Ray.

She is survived by her son Larry (Cindy) Boomgaarn, grandson Nick (Renee) Boomgaarn of Table Rock, NE, granddaughter, Monica Boomgaarn (Jay Crosley), great grandchildren, Jossette, Josiah and Jace all of Omaha, NE, sister-in-law, Betty Clark of Pawnee City, NE, plus a host of nieces and nephews.

Larry V. Rokey, 80, of Sabetha, Kansas left this earth on Sunday, July 26, 2020.

Larry was born September 7, 1939 at the Rokey farmstead west of Sabetha, the son of Andrew Peter and Mary Katherine (Noble) Rokey.

Larry was married to Elizabeth Marie Munson on May 24, 1959. They later divorced. To this union four children were born, Larry D., Rebecca, Tracy and Gary.

Larry pursued life with a passion, whether it was work or recreation. He had many jobs throughout his life but ultimately spent 54 years on the business he bought from his father, Larry’s Service.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He mostly enjoyed sharing both his knowledge and passion for all things outdoors with not only his children and grandchildren, but with anyone that showed an interest with his passions.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Linda and Mary.

Survivors include Marie; his children; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews; his sister, Andrea and his brother, Richard both of Topeka; and his Uncle Eldon from Sabetha and many cousins.

Terri Lee Williams, 66, of Carthage, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Terri was born in Sabetha, Kansas on January 4, 1954 to Delores (Wenger) Brown and Fred Kissinger. Terri graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1972. She attended Emporia State University and got her degree in education. She taught school in Hiawatha, Kansas before she went back to college and received her master’s degree in education from Kansas State University. Terri taught elementary, French and academically gifted students in Kansas, Germany and North Carolina. 

Terri was passionate about her faith and had a generous nature. She loved flowers, cooking and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Her fun loving spunky personality will be missed by all.

Terri was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joe and Dorothy Wenger; her step-father, Lyle R. Brown; her father, Fred Kissinger; her husband, James Cecil Williams, Jr.; and her step-brother, Robert Brown.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her children, Rebekah Kuykendall (Joseph) of Pacific Grove, California and Brandon Williams of Carthage, North Carolina; her sisters, Cindy Pearce (Jim) of Zionsville, Indiana, Julie Burg of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Megan Hill (Andy) of Louisburg, Kansas; her brother, Jan Kissinger (Kris) of Clay Center, Kansas; her step-brothers, Mike Brown (Deb) of Hiawatha, Kansas and Roger Brown (Carla) of Wichita, Kansas; her two grandchildren, Violet and Alice and several nieces and nephews.

Ronald Ray “Bud” Nesbitt, 88, passed away Aug. 19, 2020 in his home. Bud was born in Ozawkie, April 5, 1932, the son of Walt and Myrtle (Metzger) Nesbitt. He married Shirley Jean Harden in 1951 in Ozawkie. They had both attended Ozawkie schools. Their only child, Rhonda, was born in 1953. The family moved to Valley Falls, due to Perry Lake development, in 1955, living on Oak Street until 1978, when they moved to Ferguson Road. Shirley passed away July 2019. Still living on the property is their daughter and her husband, Ed Lindsay.

After graduating from Ozawkie High School, Bud drove a truck for Meredith Trucking. He served as a medic and postal clerk in Japan during the Korean War. After 3 years of self-employed trucking he worked a year in the parts department for Anderson Motor Co. in Valley Falls, 8 years in the parts department at Noller Ford Motor Co., Topeka, 4 years as a truck driver at Baker Quarry, Valley Falls, a year at Valley Falls Water Department, before he retired from Jefferson County Maintenance. He was very proud of his exactness in spreading rock with his truck.

Bud loved animals and always owned cats and dogs. When he was in high school, he was a great pitcher and had an offering to go into professional baseball, but at that time it didn’t bring in much money and he had a family to support. In his younger years he was a great card player, and also enjoyed riding his motorcycle.

He was very accomplished at woodworking, especially the scroll saw. He loved to dance and never missed a Saturday night when his daughter played at the Boling Grange Hall near Leavenworth. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he was a good singer. He never missed any event in which his daughter was involved. He loved being around his family and was very proud of them.

 Bud and Shirley had been married 68 years. He leaves a daughter, Rhonda and son-in-law, Ed Lindsay of Oskaloosa, a granddaughter, Jennifer Dunham, and a great granddaughter Addison Dunham, of Lawrence.

Patricia Ann (Britt) Lee was born March 4, 1937, the sixth child and only daughter of Lewis Walter and Margaret Mae (Gyhra) Britt. She passed away August 20, 2020 in Pawnee City, Nebraska. 

Pat married Richard Leon Lee on January 25, 1957 and they had four children, Mary, Margaret, Richard, Jr., and Rebecca. They moved several times due to Richard’s service in the USAF, living in California for several years before settling for good in DuBois, Nebraska in 1970. 

Pat worked at Campbell’s Soup in Tecumseh for nine years then became a stay at home mom to her favorite child. 

Pat enjoyed spending time with her family, attending her grandchildren’s activities, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles with her friend, Phyllis, embroidery, and yelling at the TV or radio during Nebraska football and volleyball games. Pat also enjoyed long Girls’ Weekend trips with her daughters and niece, Karen, especially the one to Beaver Dam, WI, which included stopping at several quilt shops along the way and at the American’s Pickers store. These trips often included a stop at a casino as well. Another monthly highlight was Family Breakfast on the last Saturday of each month at the Harvest Bowl in Tecumseh with whatever family members could attend. Pat fiercely defended her family, especially her grandchildren when watching them play sports, claiming “it wasn’t their fault” when errors were made. 

Pat had strong opinions about current events and she wasn’t afraid to share them, even with complete strangers, much to her family’s sometime embarrassment. 

Pat was a member of the DuBois American Legion Auxiliary and spearheaded the cookie baking for boxes that were sent to servicemembers and plates shared with veterans for Christmas. Every year her family would get together to bake around 200 dozen cookies for the boxes and plates. Pat made sure there was an accurate accounting of the number of cookies made as she packaged them. She was also a member of the DuBois United Methodist Church and played the church bells on Sunday. 

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (2015); son, Richard, Jr, (2018), an infant granddaughter, her parents, Walter and Margaret, and six brothers, Lewis, Willard, Walter, Richard, Roger, and Winston. 

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Bruce Sejkora, Margaret Nehring, and Rebecca and Glenn Plager; grandchildren and spouses: BJ and April Sejkora, Matt and Sommer Sejkora, Alex Sejkora, Erin and Cody Agnew, Brittany Nehring and Nate Reisdorfer, Kelsee and Justin Sayer, Zadie Plager, Trish and Cory Natter, and Carol Lee; great-grandchildren: Dawn, Liberty, Sydney, Leon, and Lili Sejkora; Alaina Getting; Tristan and Ryder Agnew; Quinlee, Peri, and Ramsie Sayer; Tori and Lexi Natter; Julian White, Kasen Lee, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Doris Erickson, 71, of Falls City, NE, passed away August 19, 2020 at Blue Springs, MO. She was born March 7, 1949 at Waucoma, IA to Oliver and Vera (Miller) Winter.

She married Karl Erickson on May 29, 1971 at Richfield Lutheran Church in Iowa.

Doris was raised in rural Waucoma and graduated North Fayette High School in 1967. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from University of Omaha. She started her nursing career as an LPN in Highland Park, IL, then worked at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, IA and at Clark County Medical Center in Iowa. After moving to Falls City she worked at Sabetha Hospital and then at Falls City Hospital. She also taught many LPN classes and was education coordinator at Community Medical Center, and also worked for In Home Health. She taught many CPR and CNA classes. Even while she was sick she was teaching her caretakers. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, PEO and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.

Doris is survived by her husband, Karl of Falls City, sons, Brett and his wife Lisa of Gas, KS, Casey and his fiancé Haylee Olberding of Falls City, Anders and his wife Jessica of Falls City, brothers, Roger Winter and his wife Karen and Kevin and his wife Tammy both of Waucoma, sister, Joyce Grover and her husband Jed of North Pole, AK, brother-in-law, Jon Harrison of Maynard, IA and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Wanda Harrison.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Young Je Kim officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery. It has been requested for attendees to wear masks and seating will be limited to promote social distancing. People may listen to the service near the church on 88.7 FM.

Euna Vaye (Ukena) Brant, age 98, formerly of Hiawatha, passed away on August 19, 2020 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.

She was born March 16, 1922 near Highland, Kansas, the daughter of Harry and Esther (Hegenderfer) Ukena. She graduated from Robinson High School and Highland Community College and taught for two years at the Diamond School, a one-room country school.

She married the love of her life, Walter R. Brant, on June 10, 1943 and encouraged her husband to become a minister. They were married 67 years and their ministry spanned some fifty years in serving Evangelical United Brethren and then United Methodist churches in Kismet, Parsons, Roeland Park, Salina, Topeka, Atchison, Reserve and Hiawatha, Kansas.

Euna Vaye was a busy mother of five children, taught Sunday School, and was always active in Women’s Missionary and Fellowship groups. Among the hobbies that she enjoyed were gardening and canning, sewing and embroidery, quilling, and keeping family scrapbooks. She was a member of P.E.O. chapters in both Atchison and Hiawatha. Her talents included playing piano and singing soprano in various church and community choirs including the Atchison Mother-Singers and the Hiawatha Music Club.

In 1976, Walter and Euna Vaye were blessed to work with other couples in the founding of the United Methodist expression of Marriage Encounter. They then became the first National Clergy Couple and presented United Methodist weekends across the country. Euna Vaye and Walter were also adventurers who enjoyed trips to the Holy Land, England, and Hawaii.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 2010 and her third daughter, Joan Barhydt, in 2016. Euna Vaye is survived by her other children and their families: Marilyn Spatz of Overland Park; Elaine and LeRoy Schrader of Lancaster; son-in-law Bob Barhydt of Salina; Nita and David Zeit of Fairview; and David and Deba Brant of Topeka and by 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and by her sister Beverly Bottiger of Lakeland, Florida.

Due to the pandemic and for the protection of all, the family will gather for a private service. There will be no public visitation with the family, but friends may pay their respects from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Rosalia A. “Rose” Moseley, 82, of Holton, formerly of Denison, KS, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. She was born January 27, 1938 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of Francis and Laura (Streeter) Lechman.

Rose was a cook for Suttons Grocery Store and several restaurants in Topeka. She later earned her Certified Nurse’s Aide and Medication Aide; working for Jackson County Nursing Home (now Medicalodge Jackson County) in Holton for many years.

She was a member of Denison Bible Church.

Rose married David Mitchell Moseley on November 17, 1955 in Topeka, KS. They celebrated over 64 years of marriage.

Survivors include 2 sons, David M. Moseley of Hoyt, KS and Matthew M. Moseley of Perry, KS; 3 sisters, Barbara Mauer (Raymond) of Paxico, KS, Vickie Ingersall of Denver, CO and Mary Groves of Topeka, KS; 6 grandchildren, Jordan Moseley, Lauren Johnston, Alicia Johnston, Dawson Moseley, Kaylee Moseley and Mollie Moseley.

She was preceded in death by 2 infant brothers, Francis and Raymond. Lechman.

Due to Rose’s husband David’s unfortunate hospitalization that was caused by a fall, the Memorial Service will be at a later date at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Samuel Brzon, 89, of Falls City, NE, passed away August 17, 2020 at Falls City. He was born November 30, 1930 at Pawnee City, NE to Sam and Josephine (Tlustos) Brzon. 

He married Betty J. Bauman on November 21, 1959 at Falls City. She passed away September 13, 2017.

Sam enlisted in the U. S. Army on February 21, 1952 at Omaha, NE. He served in Korea as a front line medic, earning a Combat Medical Badge, Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 20, 1953 at Camp Carson, CO and then served in the Army Reserves.

Sam was raised in Pawnee City and graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1950. He farmed with his father for a few years until he entered the U. S. Army. When discharged he returned and when married the couple established their home at Falls City and he worked for Falls City Creamery until becoming employed as a grinder operator for Falls City Meat Company. He retired in 1992. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Sam is survived by his daughter, Marcia Harmon and her husband Leland of Falls City, sister, Helen Anderson of Pawnee City, granddaughter, Samantha Harmon of Hurst, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Arthur, sisters, Rose Ann Good and a Shera in infancy, and half-brother, Emil Jilek.

Gary Dale Wiemers, 61 of Pawnee City, Neb. passed away on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020 at his home. He was born on Feb. 7, 1959 in Beatrice, Neb. to Dale and Virginia (Cookus) Wiemers.
Gary graduated from Atlantic high school in Atlantic.
On March 16, 2009 Gary married Penny Hager in Pawnee City, Neb.
Gary worked in Burchard and several other towns for the co-op, until retirement in 2015 due to his health.
Gary liked to going fishing with Penny, go to horse sales, and watching his kids at the Pawnee County 4-H fair showing their animals.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Wiemers, mother Virginia Ottesburg, maternal and paternal grandparents, brother Robert (Bob) Wiemers, daughter Katie Wiemers, father-in-law, Kenneth Hager, and foster grandparents.
He is survived by his loving wife Penny, loving foster parents, Opal, Dennis and Sue Schwanke and families, sons', Matt and Mallory and family, Cody , Luke and family, stepsons', Dale and April and family, Scott and Daa and family, step daughters, Peggy and Kenny and family, Virginia , siblings, brother David, sisters, Sharon, Carol, Karen, Cindy, Robin, many nieces, nephews and friends, also nurses from Hospice Asera Care.

Clifford William Hawk, formerly of Effingham, passed away on August 13, 2020, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas.

A memorial service will be Sunday, September 13, 2020, at 2:00 P.M. at Highland Community College in the new Ag Building, masks and social distancing are required. Clifford was born August 13, 1955, at the Atchison Hospital, the son of Wilson and Wilma (Cormode) Hawk. The family ran in auction service and sale barn with Registered Suffolk sheep.

This was Clifford‘s passion as he studied pedigrees and exhibited sheep in Missouri and Kansas with his favorite being the Atchison County Fair. He was known by many as a “sheep nut”. He was a member of the American Society of Animal Science, a Certified Animal Science member being certified in animal nutrition and sheep production, four National sheep associations,

Kansas National Education Association, a lifetime member of the Highland Community College Alumni Association and Atchison County Fair association serving on the fair board and was a sheep superintendent for over 20 years.

He graduated from ACCHS in 1973, attended Highland Community College and graduated with an Associate of Science degree in 1975, Missouri Western State College graduating with a BS in Animal Science and BS in Agronomy in 1977, attended the University of Missouri to begin his Master’s and do research on phosphate sources in sheep minerals and milk replacer formulation for orphan lambs. He completed a MS in Agriculture Education from Kansas State University in 1979. He obtain additional credits over the next 35 years from KSU, Ottawa, Baker, UNL, and Fort Hays State University accumulating over 235 credit hours. He spent the next 39 years teaching at Highland Community College where he developed their ag curriculum, started their ag club, taught classes, and served on numerous committees. He is credited with teaching over 1,000 ag students and having approved the first Ag Computer class in the state of Kansas by the Kansas Department of Education. He authored a work manual on Agriculture Use for the Microcomputer. In fall of 2019 he was recognized by the faculty, administration and HCC Board and was named Faculty Emeritus. His other passion was raising sheep and for many years; he sheared sheep during his breaks. He enjoyed buying feeder lambs and raise to market weight to resale.

Survivors include three sisters, Saralee (Daniel) Sanchez, Harlingen, Texas, Melody (Walter) Elsworth, Pretty Prairie, Kansas, Traci (Bill) Rahe, Morrill, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Clara Pauline Hawk.

Violet Marie (Blackburn) Martin, 91, of Holton, KS passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 at Vintage Park in Holton, KS. She was born September 15, 1928 in Sabetha, KS the daughter of Ben and Irene (Bowron) Fletchell. She graduated from Sabetha High School.

On November 27, 1947, Violet was united in marriage Lloyd Blackburn in Sabetha, KS. They shared 22 years of marriage before Lloyd passed away April 6, 1969.

She later married Ron Martin on November 5, 1978. They spent over 42 happy years on their farm south of Holton.

Violet worked for over 20 years as the bookkeeper for the Jackson Farmer’s CO-OP. She also helped her husband Lloyd who owned and operated Blackburn Plumbing, Heating, and Electric.

Violet sewed all her own clothes, cross-stitched, jigsaw puzzles, knitting, watching birds, and had several Martin Bird Houses. She was an excellent cook, and loved cooking for her family.

She was a member of the Wetmore American Legion Auxiliary Post 282.

Survivors include her husband Ron; 2 sons, James K. Blackburn (Diane) of Parsons, KS and Gary D. Blackburn (Cynthia) of Topeka, KS; 5 step-children, Judy Hinman (Wade) of Mayetta, KS, Chuck Martin of Topeka, Lanna Kellnhofer (Bill) of Lawrence, KS, Belinda Hopkins (Mel) of Georgia; Debbie Collins of Hoyt, KS; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ken Burenheide passed on to meet his maker due to natural causes. He grew up in Olpe, Kansas the youngest of four children to Fred and Caroline Burenheide. After completing high school, he matriculated to Emporia State University and he graduated with a degree in Education. While at Emporia, he met his first wife, LeAnn Hensley and from this union were born two sons, Brian and Brad. The couple moved to Clearwater, Kansas where he began his teaching career. The couple moved to Sabetha, Kansas and there Ken spent 33 of his 37 years of teaching in the Sabetha school district teaching, coaching, scorekeeping, sponsoring activities, teaching driver’s education and impacting lives of his students, many of whom kept in contact after his career.

He would remarry later in life to Janet Babbs of Hiawatha, Kansas and took her kids as his own. Mark and Ronda were added to his family and Janet and Ken bought an acreage to which a pond was quickly added and his dream of having a farm pond and his own hobby farm was fulfilled. There he grew a small crop each year and he spent a large portion of his retirement years with a favorite hobby of fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, of the home. His children, Brian Burenheide (Julie) of Sabetha. Brad Burenheide (Eileen) of Westmoreland and their children Anthony, Hannah, Drew, Brooklyn, Madison, and Samuel. Ronda Ferris (Terry) of Hiawatha and their children Jessie, Lane, and Levi. Mark Babbs of Hiawatha and also five great grandchildren, Lacey, Raven, Benjamin, Athena, and Arwen.

Ken had lifelong obsessions of building, tinkering, hunting, and fishing. This has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. Additionally, Ken was the type of person who would do whatever he could to help out a friend in need. As has been said on many occasions, the two dates that began this obituary are but the starting and ending point of his life. But the dash connecting the dates was with filled laughter, love, care, and selfless giving.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Thursday where a parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m., followed by family visiting with friends until 8.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 21, at St. Anns Catholic Church in Hiawatha, with Father Dan Gardner as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please take some time to go fishing soon and throw a line with a little prayer for Ken or do something to help out a youngster learn something along the way. Janice Irene Cunningham Moore passed away at the age of 63 on
Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020, at a hospital in Columbia, MO.

She was born Dec. 1, 1956, the seventh daughter and eighth child of
James B. and Clare Novinski Cunningham of Effingham, KS. She and
David F. Moore were married on March 11, 1993, in St. Louis, MO. He
survives of the home.

Janice was a 1974 graduate of ACCHS in Effingham, a 1976 graduate of
Highland Community College, and a 1978 graduate of Missouri Western
State College. She pursued her Masters in Psychology at the University
of Missouri in Columbia.

She is survived by six sisters - Ellen and Riley Robertson of San
Antonio, TX, Sheila and Arneil Springer of Holton, KS, Ruthe Drew of
Fish Kill, NY, Patrice Cunningham and Russell Grecco of Ocean City,
NJ, Deborah and Bill Hawk of Effingham, KS, and Denise Cunningham
of Effingham, KS; three sisters-in-law Debra K. Cunningham, Yukon,
OK, Kathy Howard, St. Louis, MO, and Cindy and David Aune, VA.
Janice was a wonderful aunt to 14 nieces and nephews; 21 great-nieces
and nephews; four great-great nieces and nephews.

She was an avid collector, especially of trains and milk glass. Janice
loved antique shopping, her houseplants and her flowers. She and David
enjoyed cooking together and often shared recipes with family and
friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Daniel P. (Murf)
Cunningham; and brothers-in-law Charles Drew and Robert Mirch.
A family celebration of life service will be held at a later date. In Jan’s
memory, donations to your local food bank would be appreciated.

Merlin D Wenger, 87, of Sabetha, Kansas was born on November 9, 1932, in Sabetha, Kansas.  He was the son of Solomon and Lydia (Brunner) Wenger.  Merlin was raised on the family farm northwest of Sabetha and attended Sabetha Public Schools.  He graduated from Sabetha High School with the class of 1950. Merlin entered active duty in the U.S. Army on February 9, 1955 where he took basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas and transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  He was honorably discharged on February 8, 1957.  Following military service, he returned to Sabetha where he mostly farmed and performed handyman services the rest of his life.  Merlin was an active member of the Church of Christ, Kiwanis, and NEK-CAP.

On April 21, 1955, Merlin was united to Mavis Marie Edelman, daughter of Emma and Jake Edelman.  This union birthed three daughters:  Cynthia Marie, Anne Melissa and Mary Jane, whom all were approximately five years apart.  The Wenger and Edelman families regularly visited on the farm together.  They grew their own produce, farmed their livestock, shared chores, and life lessons.  The elders preferred to speak German so little ears couldn’t ask questions.  Life on the farm was bountiful as were the memories made.  Unfortunately, tragedy struck as Mavis lost her battle with cancer on October 21, 1973.  Years later Merlin married Fern Adele Fisher on September 5,1976.  The two raised Anne and Mary, as Cindy was grown up ready to marry that same year.  Fern and Merlin enjoyed becoming grandparents together.  Merlin shared his craftmanship skills, squeaky clean jokes and a memorable laugh—a-hee-hee-hee!. Fern loved to sing at the Church of Christ, teach Sabetha Fifth graders, and she too, loved Merlin’s corny jokes.  Speaking of corn, Merlin and Fern would register their corn sheller into the Sabetha Rodeo Parade annually—an event their grandchildren were eager to spectate.  Their 24-year marriage came to an end as Fern passed away on October 17, 2000.  Merlin was later united in marriage to Retta Moore in September 2004.  The couple spent fifteen years together traveling across the U.S. and visiting their grown families.   Retta passed away April 27, 2019.

On Friday, July 31, 2020, Merlin was called home to his Father’s House.  He took his last breath while being cared for at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.  Merlin’s faith in Christ, is the reassurance his family needs, knowing their Dad is where he is meant to be.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Vernon Wenger, sister Alda Spellmeier, brother-in-law Alvin Spellmeier, and son-in-law Mike Rowland.

Merlin is survived by his daughters: Cindy (Bruce) Snyder of Sabetha, KS; Anne Rowland of Sabetha, KS; Mary Heier of Eudora, KS; grandchildren: Jeff Snyder of Sabetha, KS; Crystal (Nick) Painter of Topeka, KS; Kayla (Jason) Hubbard of Olathe, KS; Ashli (Kyle) Niehues of Kelly, KS; Tyler (Jennifer) Rowland of Sabetha, KS; Kaitlyn Heier of Ames, IA; Hunter Heier of Eudora, KS; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Beverly Wenger of Sabetha, KS; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A “Drive-Through” visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2020, on the east side of the Church of Christ in Sabetha.

Louise Mae Nelson, 98, formerly of Stella, Nebraska was born on June 5, 1921 in Bostwick, Nebraska to Henry and Josephine (Garver) Jacobitz.  Louise grew up in Nelson, Nebraska where she received her schooling and graduated from Nelson High School.  She was united in marriage to Carl Timmerman and to this union two children, Bill and Mary were born.  After Carl’s passing in 1979, Louise was later married to Arthur Nelson.  She lived in Stella, Nebraska for many years where she worked as a cook at the school and was a member of the Grace Bible Church.  Louise went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 22, 2020, passing away at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of ninety-eight years, nine months and seventeen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Carl Timmerman and Arthur Nelson, a brother Norman “Bud” (Lillian) Jacobitz and sisters: Helen (Orville) Teselle, Betty (Earl) Adamson and Shirley (Ted) Lyons.

Louise is survived by her loving children: Bill Timmerman of Rock Port, MO; Mary (David) Matheson of Northboro, IA; grandchildren: Randall (Rachael) Timmerman of Jefferson City, MO; Robert (Stephanie) Timmerman of Jefferson City, MO; Scott (Alicia) Timmerman of Columbia, MO; Tricia (Jim) Schwebach of Nevada, MO; Nick (Nicole) Matheson of Hamburg, IA; 15 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at the Grace Bible Church in Stella, Nebraska with Tom Jacobitz officiating.  Family requests all attendees to please dress in bright and colorful attire in Louise’s memory.

Inurnment will be at the Prairie Union Cemetery following services.

Kyle Dean Hoagland PhD, 69, of Lincoln, passed away on August 12th after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease (PD).  Kyle was born on April 24, 1951, in Omaha, Nebraska to Robert “Bob” and Eileene (Schultz) Hoagland and spent many summers on the family farm in Humboldt. His love of the outdoors led to an interest in science, aquatic ecology, water quality and the effect of herbicides on the microscopic algae that live in lakes and streams.  With degrees from Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University and University of Nebraska, Kyle chose an academic career which took him to the University of Maine, Louisiana State University, Texas Christian University and ultimately back to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he taught for more than 25 years. Dr. Hoagland served in a variety of administrative roles including Director of the Water Center, and several stints as Interim Director of the School of Natural Resources. He was active in professional societies and published widely. 

Kyle was a popular professor, advisor and mentor to many students who went on to make solid contributions in academics, natural resource agencies and the environmental fields.  His favorite class to teach was Limnology, the study of lakes and streams, which he taught in the summer at Cedar Point, the UNL Biological Field Station in Ogallala. He loved taking students to explore nearby aquatic wonders--the headwaters of Otter Creek, the Kingsley Dam toe drains, and Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge. He used these locations to demonstrate the infinite variety of ecological conditions and the resultant diversity of organisms.

Kyle loved Nebraska and had a dry sense of humor which he speckled with Midwest anecdotes and practical jokes. One of his favorite books was Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, a story about a Midwest boyhood and summer.  Kyle was a cutthroat Pinochle player and liked to socialize with friends and family over good food and drink.  He was athletic, competitive and loved sports, especially coaching the children’s soccer teams, cheering on the Huskers, and playing baseball, tennis and basketball, until PD made it so he “couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn.”

The highlight of Kyle’s life was becoming a father in middle age.  He couldn’t have been more pleased with the gift of both a son and daughter and experiencing the different joys they brought him. He loved family adventures with them, especially vacations in Rocky Mountain National Park where he taught the kids to hike, fish and love the outdoors.

Kyle is survived by significant other, Kristin Von Walz; children: Aaron Z. Hoagland of Washington, DC and Sarah Z. Hoagland of Lincoln; sisters: LeAnn (Neil) Merrifield of Pace, FL; Lori (Patrick) Umberger of Glenwood, IA; nieces and nephews who remember him as the “fun” uncle: Megan Merrifield, Bryce Merrifield, Ben Umberger, Lydia Umberger, Samantha Umberger, Richard Barad, Sam Barad, and Max Seiler. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 21st, 2020, at the Humboldt Cemetery.

Maxine West Gross, 99, of Falls City, NE, passed away August 15, 2020 at Falls City. She was born February 19, 1921 at Waverly, MO to Albert and Josephine (Noel) Schumaker. 

She married Roger West in November of 1938 at Dover, MO. He passed away August of 1972. She married Everett Gross in 1977 at Las Vegas, NV, he passed away in 2007.

Maxine was raised at Cole Camp, Mo and attended school there. When married to Mr. West they made their home in Blackwater, MO. They moved to Falls City in 1950 and she worked at the Falls City Creamery and for Safeway. They moved to Raytown, MO where she worked for K-Mart. When married to Mr. Gross they lived in Independence, MO until his death and she moved to Falls City in 2009 and has lived here since. She was a member of First Christian Church and Eastern Star.

Maxine is survived by her children, Roger, Jr. and his wife Laritta of Falls City, Carol Frederick of Blair, NE, son-in-law, Dennis Mellage of Falls City, sister, Velda Barns of Cole Camp, twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-nine, great-grandchildren and thirty-nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, three brothers, five sisters, daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Harry Gibbs, daughter, Judy Mellage, son-in-law, Bob Frederick and a grandson, Mark Frederick.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Reverend Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

Open visitation and viewing will begin on Wednesday afternoon until 7:00 PM and on Thursday until 8:00 PM.

Shirley L. Heideman, 82, of Seneca, KS, died on Thursday, August 14, 2020 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital.

She was born Shirley Lee Meyer, daughter of Solomon “Solly” and Ella Marie Lockas Meyer on February 12,1938 in Pawnee City, Nebraska.  She grew up in the Bern community and graduated from Seneca High School as valedictorian in 1956.

During her junior and senior years of high school she worked at the Log Cabin Café, owned by her parents at the time.

On January 10, 1957, she married George Heideman at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. They lived in Hiawatha for a year where he worked for George Gudenkauf Rendering Service. They returned to Seneca where they purchased the meat department at the A&P from Bob Calderwood. Shirley was also employed by the ASC office. In 1964, they sold the meat market to Bill Murphy. They built the Heideman Locker in June of 1966 where they did custom slaughtering and meat processing for 25 years. In 1989, they opened the Heideman Smoke House on Seneca’s Main Street and sold it in 1997. Shirley was a bus driver for the school district for many years and was very fond of her bus kids.

She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, the St. Ann’s Society at the church, and was a past Altar President. She was also a founding member of the STEP Foundation and member of the Nemaha County Historical Society. Shirley served several years as an EMT. In her free time, Shirley enjoyed bowling, gardening, baking and cooking; and loved animals.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Grauer of Seneca; her son, Dan (Cindy) Heideman of Wamego; a sister, Charlotte Haug of Seneca; five granddaughters; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George. Heideman on February 16, 2004; and her son-in-law, Randy Grauer on December 25, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10AM Monday, August 17, 2020 at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A Rosary will be prayed at 2 PM Sunday, August 16th at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Memorials may be given in Shirley’s memory to the Nemaha County Historical Society or to the STEP Foundation, and sent in care of the family.

Merlene (Pelham) Winkel, 86, of Blair, Kansas passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 at the Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri. 

Merlene was born on September 27, 1933 in Ozark County, Missouri to Velma Pelham. 

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Elwood, Kansas. She was a Homemaker and taught Sunday School for over 20 years. Merlene loved her husband of 66 years, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but most of all she loved God. 

Merlene married Floyd Winkel on October 11, 1953 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He survives of the home.

Violet Marie (Blackburn) Martin, 91, of Holton, KS passed away Friday, August 14, 2020 at Vintage Park in Holton, KS. She was born September 15, 1928 in Sabetha, KS the daughter of Ben and Irene (Bowron) Fletchell. She graduated from Sabetha High School.

On November 27, 1947, Violet was united in marriage Lloyd Blackburn in Sabetha, KS. They shared 22 years of marriage before Lloyd passed away April 6, 1969.

She later married Ron Martin on November 5, 1978. They spent over 42 happy years on their farm south of Holton.

Violet worked for over 20 years as the bookkeeper for the Jackson Farmer’s CO-OP. She also helped her husband Lloyd who owned and operated Blackburn Plumbing, Heating, and Electric.

Violet sewed all her own clothes, cross-stitched, jigsaw puzzles, knitting, watching birds, and had several Martin Bird Houses. She was an excellent cook, and loved cooking for her family.

She was a member of the Wetmore American Legion Auxiliary Post 282.

Survivors include her husband Ron; 2 sons, James K. Blackburn (Diane) of Parsons, KS and Gary D. Blackburn (Cynthia) of Topeka, KS; 5 step-children, Judy Hinman (Wade) of Mayetta, KS, Chuck Martin of Topeka, Lanna Kellnhofer (Bill) of Lawrence, KS, Belinda Hopkins (Mel) of Georgia; Debbie Collins of Hoyt, KS; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Maryellen Neibling, 92, with family by her side, passed away Friday morning, August 14, 2020, at home.

Maryellen was born in a farm home near Hiawatha, May 6, 1928, one of three children born to Earl and Lena Jasper Peterson and had lived in the northeast Kansas area nearly all of her life where she grew up, attended school and graduated from Hiawatha High School.  Maryellen attended Pittsburg State College where she obtained a teaching certificate, returning to this area to teach school.

During her life, Maryellen was a very busy individual:  her church, the Highland United Methodist-Presbyterian Church, was very important to her as she served on various committees and in different capacities.  She was a gray lady volunteer at the Hiawatha Community Hospital for many years along with volunteering to assist with bingo at Maple Heights Rehabilitation Center.  She enjoyed camping, traveling the world, and working in her flower garden and yard.  It had also been said she enjoyed going to the casino (on occasion).  All that being said, she loved her family and the time she was able to spend with them.

She married James “Harvey” Neibling, February 8, 1948, at Hiawatha.  They farmed and raised livestock northwest of Highland and lived in the same farm home for 60 years before they retired to Highland.  They have enjoyed 72 years of being together and from this union, their children:  Janet, Walter, and Kathryn were born.  After Kathryn was born, she started working in the kitchen at Hiawatha Community Hospital.  After over 20 years of service, she retired as the dietitian.

Survivors include her husband Harvey of the home, her children: Janet Tyler (Paul) of Highland, Walter Neibling (Angie) of rural Highland, Kathryn Bachman (Greg) of Hiawatha; grandchildren:  Ladonna Gilmore, Adam Tyler, Stacy Fisher, Brett Neibling, Kaitlynn Bachman, and Eli Bachman; and seven great-grandchildren.

Maryellen was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Mildred Housh, and brother Virgil Peterson.

Marjean Werner, 94, of Falls City, NE, passed away August 13, 2020 at Falls City. She was born January 31, 1926 in rural Falls City to Leslie and Anna (Deckinger) Bippes. 

She married Richard “Blondie” Werner on January 20, 1952 at Falls City. He passed away October 1, 1988

Marjean was raised east of Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1944. She started working at Falls City Creamery and worked there until it closed. When married the couple established their home in Falls City and she has lived here since. In 1988 she took employment as a bookkeeper for Mr. Automotive, retiring in 2018. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and was a 20 year member of the Falls City Volunteer Ambulance Squad and had been choir director and played organ at Immanuel Methodist Church.

Marjean is survived by her son, David of Falls City, brother, Kenneth Bippes and his wife Glenda of Falls City, two grandchildren, Dan and Adrienne Werner and a great-grandchild. She was precede in death by her parents, husband, son, Daniel and a sister, Virginia Elwonger.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, August 17, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Hader officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

Lurena K. Hansen, 90, formerly of Atchison, KS, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at the Breese Nursing Home, Breese, IL.

Lurena was born June 19, 1930, in Balko, MO, the daughter of Charles and Katherine (Mink) Bowles.  She was the head cook for Atchison Valley Hope for twelve years.  Lurena was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and Women’s Democrat Club.  She enjoyed gardening, flowers and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Lurena married Ernest R.E. Hansen on November 14, 1946 in Atchison, KS.  He preceded her in death on January 26, 2014.  Survivors include survivors include five sons, David E. (Cindy) Hansen, Lebanon, IL, Reverend Dr. Dennis M. (Marcia) Hansen, Appleton, WI, Donald L. (Julie) Hansen, Fredericksburg, VA, Daniel Ray (Renita) Hansen, Las Cruces, NM, and Ernest A. (Jo Dean) Hansen, Lafayette, LA, twelve grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and twenty-one great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Frances Hurst, Ruby Lee Hottman, and a brother William Bowles and a granddaughter Jade Hansen.

Jeanne Kay (Shaw) Shear, 80, of Sabetha, KS passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2020. 

She was born July 20, 1940, in Sabetha to Clarence “Higgins” and Marjorie “Marge” (Fouraker) Shaw. Jeanne graduated from Sabetha High School and married the late Roger Shear on June 8, 1958. They spent most of their life living in Sabetha. He preceded her in death in 2011. 

Jeanne attended the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha her entire life and was a longtime member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and Gamma Omega sorority. She loved her close friends, traveling, reading, crafting, and bridge parties. 

Jeanne is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Bob Martin) Shear-Martin of Spring Hill, KS and Sarah O’Sullivan of Oakland, CA, a granddaughter, Kayla Shear and great grandson, Easton Magee of Lawrence, KS, and a grandson, Jake Martin of Emporia, KS. She is also survived by her cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. 

Jeanne was a wonderful and much-loved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Family was the center of her life. She was very involved and always supported the interests and activities of her daughters and grandchildren. Her family cherishes the warm and funny memories they have of times spent together. 
 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 17, at the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha, Kansas. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 16, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. Inurnment will be in the Albany Cemetery.

Dallas J. Dressman, 84, of Baileyville entered into eternal life on Wednesday, August 11, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. 

He was born on July 29, 1936 in Baileyville, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Helen (Heiman) Dressman.  This is where he grew to love the outdoors and farming.  He attended Sacred Heart School in Baileyville.  After graduating high school Dallas entered the Army from 1959 until receiving an honorable discharge 1961, serving time in Germany.  While serving his country he received a Good Conduct Medal and an Army of Occupation Medal.  

He was united in marriage to Henrietta Haverkamp on May 3, 1962 at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict, Kansas.  This union blessed them with six boys.  Together they ran a dairy and row crop farm in Baileyville until retiring in 2014.    

Dallas enjoyed farming, fish fries, tinkering with equipment, playing cards, country music and spending time with his family.  Dallas didn’t know a stranger and would enjoy talking to people he met or friends he would see on a trip into town.   He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed helping with the annual events.  

Survivors include his wife, Henriette of Baileyville; his sons and their wives, David & Deb of Alta Vista, Rob & Jolene of Topeka, Delaine & Marcia of Godfey, Illinois, Brad & Susan of Marysville, Mike & Maria of Carbondale and Dan Dressman of Baileyville.  They have ten grandchildren.  

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Glenda; and brothers, Erwin, Clarence, Alvin, Edwin and Lester.  

The rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Friday, August 14th at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.  Mass of Christian burial will be 10 AM on Saturday, August 15, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville.  Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Church cemetery, with military honor guard.

LeRoy Harold Frakes, 88 of Horton, KS died on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2020 at the Mission Village Nursing Home, Horton, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, August. 14, 2020 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Al Schirmacher officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Huron Cemetery. LeRoy was born on June 10, 1932 in Denton, KS the son of Albert and Cosetta (Delzeit) Frakes. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. LeRoy worked for the former LFM Foundry, Lincoln Grain, at Wilde Tool for many years, and last in housekeeping for the Golden Eagle Casino. LeRoy had attended Catholic Churches in Everest and Purcell, KS. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting, woodworking, playing the guitar, bird watching and cutting wood.

He was married to Violet Barnthson on Sept. 6, 1952. They were later divorced. LeRoy was later married to Rose Cox. She preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Rusty (Jeanne) Frakes, Everest, KS, two daughters; Flori Hicks, Marysville, KS and Cosetta Frakes, Horton, KS, a brother, Bill Frakes, Manhattan, KS and four sisters; Clara Horn, Atchison ,KS, Mary Belz, Kansas City, KS, Linda Frakes, Kansas City, KS, and Patricia Lowry, Wichita, KS , 15 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren, two great great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, wife Rose, a son John Frakes a daughter Linda Phillips and two grandchildren preceded him in death.

Roy H Yazel, age 82 of Independence passed away August 10, 2020. Visitation 6pm to 8 pm, Friday, August 14, 2020. Funeral Service 10am, Saturday, August 15, 2020. All services at Newcomers Noland Road Chapel. Burial in Muscotah, Ks following services.

Roy Henry Yazel was born Sept 25, 1937 in Horton, Ks to Richard and Veva (Neill) Yazel. He was raised and educated in Effingham ,Ks. He graduated from high school 1955. After high school he began work at Allis Chalmers as a welder and combine assembler In Independence.

Roy married Lynn Ostertag, December 28, 1960 in Atchison, Ks. She survives.

He served his country from 1960 to 1962 in the U.S. Army. After his service to his country, he returned to Independence and started working with Allis Chalmers again. Roy worked there for close to 40 years, retiring when the company shut down its operations.

During retirement he rode motorcycles and went on numerous trips. He loved to travel. Proceeded in death by his parents, Brother Donald Lee, Sister Lula Mae.

He is survived by; wife Lynn, Sons: Mark, Jeff, and Lyle and spouse Janice. Daughter: Sandra. Sister Vida Alberts. 6 grandchildren, 5 gr grandchildren and one on the way.

Pamela Day Ukele, age 70, of Blue Springs, Missouri passed away at the University of Kansas Medical Center on Monday, August 10, 2020. 

Pamela was born October 30, 1949 in St. Anthony’s Hospital, Sabetha, Kansas. She was the oldest of 4 children born to Marshall and Geneva Florence (Brigham) Ukele of rural Berwick, Nemaha County, Kansas. As she grew into adulthood, she worked on the family farm, went to Sunday school at the First Methodist Church in Sabetha, a member of the Lucky Clover 4-H Club, took lessons in dance and piano, attended Excelsior County School from K to 8th grade and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1967. She received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri in Elementary Education in 1971. She began her teaching career in northeast Missouri and retired from teaching from Hannibal Public Schools in Hannibal, Missouri. Her daughter, Cassaday (Cassie) Sue was born on June 22, 1990 and Pamela was very involved in and proud of her daughter’s adventures, sporting endeavors and achievements. Pamela was the family genealogist and enjoyed sharing that knowledge and attending/hosting family reunions. She always loved her family get-togethers especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas time in Kansas. She was very fond of her nieces and nephews, her Grandmother Ukele, her Aunt Dorothy, and her many close relatives and friends. Pamela was a member of Eastern Star in Missouri, several past genealogy groups and loved to attend theatrical presentations and travel throughout the United States. 

Pamela was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; aunts; uncles; two brothers, Stephen Marshall Ukele and Lee Fred Ukele; sister-in-law, Carmen Kay (Baumgartner) Ukele; niece, Marlee Geneva Ukele; and cousins, Jim Summers and Kim Summers. 

Pamela is survived by her daughter, Cassaday Sue Hood (Travis) of Oak Grove, Missouri; her sister, Paula Sue Miller (Alan) of Shawnee, Kansas; her sister-in-law, Pamela Sue Ukele of Sabetha, Kansas; her two nieces, Jean Adrian Miller and Anna Maureen Weiser (Aaron); her three nephews, Ryan David Haug (Emily), Tanner Marshall Ukele, and Carson Samuel Ukele; and beloved cousins, Beth Mazzola Summers, Gary and Sylvia Summers, Jeri and Janice Summers, Jon and Janet Summers, and Kirk and Stefni Summers, and Larry and Lorene Strahm.

Florence J. Rutland, 86, of Robinson, died Monday evening, August 10, 2020, at Midland Hospice in Topeka where she had been a short time.

Florence was born April 17, 1934, in Ft. Collins, CO, one of eight children born to Frank Thomas and Laveena Catherine Hosier Nockhold. The family lived in Wellington and Englewood, CO where she grew up, attended school and Englewood High School, later working hard to earn her GED.She was married to Lawrence Richard Garman, June 6, 1952, at Littleton, CO. To this union eight children were born: Glenn, Norman, Ollie, Mark, Brenda, and three children that died in infancy before they divorced. She had moved to Kansas in 1976 and moved to Hiawatha from Holton in 1982.

Throughout her life, she was busy raising: her family, being a den mother in Cub Scouts in Colorado when the boys were small, along with working as a housekeeper in nursing homes or hospitals. Upon moving to Kansas, Florence had worked at Flair Fold wood fabrication plant in Hiawatha for over 7 years. She also liked to read and do crafts.She met and later married Harold Rutland, December 20, 1992 at Hiawatha. They made Hiawatha their home until moving to Robinson. They attended the First Christian Church in Hiawatha. He died March 14, 2005. She continued to live in Robinson until her health failed and moved to Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to make her home in 2013.

Survivors include her children: Glenn Garman, Norman Garman, Ollie Sample, Mark Garman, Brenda Garman; 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters: Betty Nix and Dora Keffer.Florence was also preceded in death by her parents, and five siblings.Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks from 10 until 6 Thursday afternoon.

Mary "Ruth” Hoskins, 91, of Seneca, Kansas died Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Life Care Center in Seneca, Kansas.

Ruth was born on June 24, 1929 in Onaga, Kansas to Raymond and Mary (Matthews) Landreth and grew up in Axtell, Kansas. She met Charles William Hoskins, a teacher at Axtell High School and married him on June 22, 1952. Shortly thereafter, Ruth and Charles moved to Wichita, Kansas where their two children, Kevin and Pamela were born. The family then moved to San Jose, California in 1968. In 1997, ten years after Charles retired from teaching, Ruth and Charles moved back to Kansas taking up residence in Seneca.

Ruth was a lover of maps and geography and was never without an atlas. She and Charles visited all 48 contiguous states during a three month road trip in 1987. She was a talented seamstress, crocheter and knitter. Ruth enjoyed playing the piano and organ at home and at church. She was an avid basketball fan of both college and the NBA. Ruth was a homemaker and sometimes an office assistant in medical offices.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary; her husband, Charles; and her brother, Bill Landreth.

Ruth is survived by her son, Kevin Hoskins (Joni); her daughter, Pamela Aguilar (Gregg); her sister, Helen Saville; five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Juanita Ann Kimmi, 83, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at her home in Horton, Kansas. She was born on February 8, 1937 in Horton, Kansas the daughter of Donaciano and Francisca Landin Cortez.

Juanita was a bookkeeper for Gockel's Grocery and the Kimmi Sawmill for years until she retired. She was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Juanita enjoyed making rosaries and volunteering at the Tri-County Manor in Horton, Kansas.

In November of 1968 she married Ervin Kimmi at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas.

Rick Honeyman, 70, died peacefully at his home on August 6, 2020; his family and community feeling the loss of an extraordinary man. Rick resided in Seneca and Lawrence and recently moved to Topeka, Kansas to live closer to his grandchildren.

He was born June 21, 1950, oldest son of Robert and Rosella Honeyman. As a young child he grew up helping his dad deliver Meadow Gold fresh milk to homes in Seneca. Rick graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in 1968. He was a star quarterback at Saints Peter and Paul schools in Seneca Kansas, Highland JCCO, St Mary of the Plains College and a baseball pitcher at Washburn University in the 1970’s. He loved the Jayhawks, Royals and Chiefs. Rick loved his family, sports, hunting and fishing with the biggest chubs he could find.

He began his career while in college selling cars at Lewis Toyota and being management at Kent Brown Chevrolet. In 1979, he founded Rick Honeyman Ford & Mercury in Seneca. He loved his Ford customers and employees who became his friend through the years.

Rick married Linda Hermesch August 1972, while on their honeymoon they met Elvis while in Las Vegas. He loved coaching American Legion Baseball and youth teams as his kids grew up and later watching his grandchildren play sports. Rick was always present yelling words of encouragement from the sidelines. He had a cheerful personality that could lighten any situation, often with a firework nearby.   During his retirement Rick enjoyed golfing at Spring Creek Golf Course. He enjoyed fishing with his son, grandkids and his buds at Clinton Lake. He loved his family with all of his heart, and they will miss his amazing spirit and kindness. He took being a grandparent seriously and his grandchildren will hold onto their special memories of their “Poppy,” as he was one of a kind.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert “Bob” E. Honeyman on October 8, 2014 and his brother, William J. Honeyman on November 11, 2010.

Survivors are his wife, Linda Honeyman of Topeka; children, Ryan (Nikki) Honeyman, Seneca and Haley (Sam) Gish, Topeka; mother, Rosie Honeyman, Seneca; siblings, Gary (Diann) Honeyman, Laramie, WY, Terry (Meryce) Honeyman, Topeka, Janet (Roger McCollister) Honeyman, Lawrence, Diane (Lloyd) Brandenburg, Topeka, Jeanne Thomsen, Lawrence and Lori (Mark) Koepsel, Topeka; and his grandchildren who put a smile on his face every time he saw them--Cali, Meg and Logan Honeyman and Kennedy, Brooklyn and Hunter Gish.

Rick will be in state all-day on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Lauer Funeral Home.

Trent K. LeDoux, 46, of Holton, KS, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2020 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was born February 9, 1974 in Topeka, KS, the son of Alan L. “Al” and Sarah (Brockelman) LeDoux.

Trent graduated from Holton High School in 1992 and later from K-State University in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. He was a farmer and stockman on his family farm and worked for the Kansas Department of Agriculture. He enjoyed buying and selling political memorabilia over the years.

He was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, and former member of Jackson County Farm Bureau. He was very active with the board of directors for Nueva Vida Ministry and served as a tutor for the after school program. He served as Beef Superintendent for Jackson County Fair, and was a former member of Holton Optimist Club and Banner Grange. He proudly served as member of the Kansas Legislature.

Trent was involved with many Republican committees. Including being a Delegate for the National Republican Convention, Staffer for Republican Kansas Senate, Chairman for 2nd District Republican Committee and many more.

Survivors include his mother, Sarah LeDoux of Holton, KS; sister, Jess Baack (Eric) of Staplehurst, NE; brother, Andy LeDoux (Danielle) of Ree Heights, SD and nieces and nephews, J.W. and Jady LeDoux and Ella and Piper Baack. He was a proud uncle who enjoyed keeping up with their activities.

He was preceded in death by his father, Al LeDoux on January 22, 2020.

Mary Doreen Donovan, 92, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 3, 2020 at KU Medical Center after a valiant battle with Congestive Heart Failure.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant.  Visitation with the family will be at 9:00 A.M. at St. Benedict’s Church on Saturday with a rosary recitation at 10:00 A.M.  The church will follow social distancing guidelines and mandates the wearing of masks, please.  Interment will be at Mt. Doreen was born January 14, 1928 in Leavenworth, Kansas to Mary McEvoy Harris and James Harris.

Doreen attended St. Benedict’s Grade School and graduated from Mount Saint Scholastica Academy in 1946.  She attended the Mount College before working as a bookkeeper in banking for several years.  Doreen married Franklin A. Donovan at St. Benedict’s Church on July 29, 1950 and they were longtime active members of the parish.  Faith was an integral part of Doreen’s life and she had great devotion to St. Joseph.

A full time mother and homemaker, Doreen was an excellent seamstress, making two of her daughter’s wedding gowns and the dresses for the entire wedding parties.  She was also an excellent cook and was known to her grandchildren for her bright smiles, warm hugs, and delicious pies.  According to family legend, Doreen baked 17 different pies (with homemade crusts no less) one Thanksgiving when the entire family was home.  When the girls left home, Doreen occasionally worked in her husband’s podiatry practice.  She was a longtime member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary and an active member of the Kansas and National Podiatry Auxiliaries, holding various officer positions in all.  Doreen loved to play bridge and was able to play twice in the weeks before her passing, even placing second.  Doreen was a very active supporter of Benedictine College, especially during Football Season and the four years her youngest grandchild, Molly Schmidt, played Women’s Soccer, rarely missing a game.

Doreen is survived by her husband of 70 years, Frank Donovan (Doc), and their four daughters, Patty (Tim) Coughlon of Denver, CO; Carol (Kim) Day of Leawood, KS; Colleen (Jim) Dillingham of Bend, OR; and Diane (Mike) Schmidt of Overland Park, KS.  Each of her 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren felt like they were her very favorite.

Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, her Stepmother, Lucille Banks Harris, and a brother, James Harris of Casper, WY.

Ervin F. Gobber, age 90 of Humboldt, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at Colonial Acres in Humboldt.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn of Humboldt; children and spouses Rita and Guy Lammle of Scottsdale, AZ; Rhonda and Steve Burbach of Lincoln; Royce and Beth Gobber of Tecumseh; Ryan Gobber of Humboldt; Robin and Bill Westfall of Elkhorn; Rod and Lisa Gobber of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren and their children Amy Wieseler, Luke and Grace; Dana and West Anderson, Ethan and Davis; Lacey and Zach Prokop, Lyla, Vivian, and Emmy; Lauren and Alexander Inda with one on the way; Leah Burbach; Whitney and Andrew Sisco, Adelyn, Aubrey, Kaden, Lane, and Macy; Devin and Darci Gobber; Tanner Gobber; Erynn Westfall and fiancé Aaron Mason; Zach Westfall; Trent and Patience Gobber; Taylor Gobber; sister-in-law Orva Sodman; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Wilbur Leroy Entrikin, 75 of Hiawatha, KS passed away at his home on July 30th, 2020.  Born March 15th, 1945 in Stewartsville, Mo. to Wilbur and Pansy (Fowler) Entrikin.

Leroy is survived by five children Angie, Mike, Becky, Julie and Billy. He was blessed to have multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. Siblings Byron, Dale, Roger, Bobi, Nedra, Dora Bea, and John.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Martin, and brother Jimmy Don.

Leroy worked many jobs throughout his life, but his favorite was working on cars. He enjoyed dirt track racing with his son-in- law BJ and their race team A&E Racing. Leroy also loved helping with family reunions and enjoyed sharing stories and memories. His grandchildren were his greatest joy! He also loved his rescue fur babies.   

Visitation will be held August 9th from 2 pm to 3 pm at the Troy Christian Church in Troy, KS. Memorial service will start at 3 pm, following the visitation.

Clifford H. Hysten, 78, Kansas City, Missouri, died Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at his residence.

Graveside services will be Saturday, August 8, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atchison.  Memorial contributions may be left in care of the funeral home.

Clifford was born on July 3, 1942, in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Clem C. and Jean (Boydston) Hysten. He attended Lincoln School and later graduated from Atchison High School.

Clifford served in the United States Navy from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1964.

He was employed with the Kansas City Water Department for 35 years as a dispatcher, retiring in 2005.

Survivors include five brothers, Fredrick Hysten, Atchison, KS; Joseph Hysten, Topeka, KS; Lloyd Hysten, Lawrence, KS; John Hysten, Topeka, KS; Patrick Hysten, Lawrence, KS; and six sisters, Judy Billings, Topeka, KS; Victoria Stone, Horton, KS; Rose Godfrey, St. Louis, MO; Christine Hightower, Topeka, KS; Mary Rudy, Ozawkie, KS; Valeri Hysten, Las Vegas, NV.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Margaret Grier and Cynthia Hysten; and a brother, Richard Hysten.

William “Bill” A. Fuhrman, 88, of Severance, Kansas, passed away August 1, 2020.

Bill was born on October 16, 1931 in Atchison, Kansas, to Albert & Angela (Joyce) Fuhrman.  He grew up on a farm and graduated from Severance High School in 1949. In 1951 he joined the Kansas Army National Guard and in 1952 was drafted into the U.S. Air Force. Bill attended the U.S. Air Force Cadet School in Enid, Oklahoma and after graduating and receiving his wings, he married Joan Franken on March 17, 1954 at the Cathedral in St. Joseph, Mo.  He was active in the Air Force until 1957.  Bill continued to fly by joining the Missouri Air National Guard at Rosecrans in 1959 until retiring as Lt. Colonel in 1982. Over his career he piloted 14 different types of aircraft which took him and his “Black Cat Crew” on missions to all parts of the world. Bill ended his career flying C-130’s but his favorite plane to fly was a KC-97L.
 

After the Air Force in 1957 Bill and Joan returned to farming.  While farming and flying Bill found ways to give back to his community. He was a member of St Benedict’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Severance Council #675 for 69 years, Midway Meadowlarks 4-H leader, Wolf River Watershed Board and Wolf River Township Trustee, Doniphan County Commissioner, Farm Credit Board of Directors for 37 years, NEK-Cap Inc. Director, and the Doniphan Co. Fire District #2 Board for 30 yrs.

Bill felt blessed to be able to farm with three of his sons and a grandson who continue to farm.

Bill had a good sense of humor and never met a stranger. He was proud that all his children graduated from college and he became a big K-State fan. Loved watching the Royals, college sports, old westerns, bowling, playing cards and going to the casino. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Patricia Erdley and Donna Manyon, son-in-law Jeff Caton.

He is survived by his wife Joan and 7 children, Al (Nancy), Jeff (Brenda), Susan (Marshall) Willey, Cindy (Steve) Krug, Laura Caton, Matt (Beth), & Chuck. Bill has 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Kathie worked as a waitress for the Atchison Pizza Hut for many years, and had just started as a clerk for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Store. Kathie was a member of the Yoga Class at Munchic Art Gallery, attended Bible Study at Atchison Senior Village, and enjoyed crocheting, needlework, cross stitch, visiting with friends on facebook, and especially her grandson.

She was married to Donald Rasdall on May 7, 1988 in Effingham, KS. Don survives of the home. Patricia Ann (Idol) Rosenberger, 85, of Highland, with family by her side passed away peacefully at her home, Sunday afternoon, August 2, 2020.

Pat was born August 13, 1934, one of five children to Paul and Thelma (Taylor) Idol at the family home near White cloud. Pat was a lifelong resident of the area where she attended Hilltop Grade School and Reserve High School. At the age of 16, she married her soul mate Gerald Rosenberger at Manhattan Bible College, Manhattan, KS on April 28, 1951.

She was a member of the White Cloud Christian Church and the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #233.

Highlights of her life was her husband “Fed” of 69 years, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If they had an activity or sporting event you can bet she would be there and be classified as their number one fan. Her family always asked her to make her infamous cinnamon rolls and if you were of one the lucky, she would make taffy.

Surviving are her children: Randall Rosenberger (Delinda) of Atchison, Dedra Bunck (Bob) of Everest, grandchildren: Branson Rosenberger (Terri) of Troy, Nikia Weber (Jeff) of Atchison, Lindsey Miller (Tyler) of Wathena, Bobbie Ann Jacobson (Charlie) of Towanda, Brice Bunck (Allison) of Topeka, Bailey Lanter (Michael) of Everest. Great-grandchildren include Cassidy, Caden Rosenberger, Griffin, Emerson Weber, Bryer, Brailee, Bentlee, Barrett Miller, Spencer Rose, Eli, Brett Violet, Duke Jacobson, Cole, Tenly, Sawyer Creighton Bunck, Tiffin and Beckett Lanter. Also surviving is a brother Paul Idol (Cloeva) of Topeka.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald “Fed” Rosenberger June 19, 2020, brothers: Martin, Harold (Bud) Idol, and a sister Mary Drake.

Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, August 6, at the Doniphan West Gymnasium at Highland. Thurman Miller will officiate. Eastern Star Committal services will be performed. Interment will follow Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Phyllis Jean Eickhoff of Falls City passed away on August 2, 2020.  She was born October 26, 1937 in Connersville, Indiana to the late Lowell and  Louise (Fitzgerald) Kelly.   She married Carl “Duane” Eickhoff on October 26, 1957 in Connersville, Indiana.   Duane passed away on November 22, 2010.  Phyllis was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (6 miles north) Falls City. 

Phyllis loved being a mother and grandmother and was always prepared to lend a helping hand.  She was a dedicated homemaker which included all the canning and preserving of the abundance of produce from her garden.   While her children were in school, she served as an officer of the South School PTA, Campfire Girls and the Falls City High School Band Parents.   Phyllis worked for Richardson County Bank & Trust Co., was a World Book Encyclopedia sales representative, worked for Dr. Krickbaum and Dr. Farmer and worked as a waitress for some of the local restaurants.  Phyllis was an excellent seamstress and quilting was her passion making all the children and grandchildren quilts and donating so many to the Sew ‘N Sews quilter group at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where they were sent to the Lutheran World Relief and the Orphan Grain Train organizations.   This past year Phyllis donated many quilts that she had made to the Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney, NE.  She made countless crocheted and embroidered items.   Phyllis was also a member of various church organizations and the VFW Auxiliary in Falls City. 

Phyllis is survived by her children, Lowell Carl (Mary L.) Eickhoff of Falls City, Kelly Valeria Tatsch of Killeen, Texas and Estelle Jean Eickhoff of Hiawatha, Kansas, sister Ruthann Petro of Lincoln, 5 grandchildren Carla (Clint) Kage, Tecumseh and James Eickhoff, Falls City; Megan (David) Green, Enterprise, Alabama; Kate (Brandon) Cox, San Angelo, Texas and April Tatsch, Enterprise, Alabama and 6 great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Duane Eickhoff, her parents, sister Carolyn Harris and brother Mike Kelly. 

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dorr & Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Boatright officiating. Burial at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, 6 miles north, immediately following the service.  

Open visitation and viewing will begin Tuesday afternoon at the Dorr & Clark Funeral Home in Falls City.

Audrey “Jolene” Reynolds, 78, of Fairview, passed away August 2, 2020 at Maple Heights, Hiawatha KS.

She was born September 23rd, 1941 to Virgil & Fern (Brown) Bunch in Barnard, KS. Jolene grew up at the Barnard-Lincoln communities where she attended school and graduated from Lincoln High School.

Jolene married Paul Reynolds, May 5, 1990 at Fairview. She worked a number of years for USD #415 at Hiawatha, in the cafeteria at the grade and high schools, and later for Sac & Fox Casino of Fairview. They have made their home at Fairview where Paul survives.

Also surviving are 2 sons, Ronald & Tim McPherson of Fairview, KS; 2 stepsons, Paul Reynolds, Jr (Penny) of Alexandria, VA & Wade Reynolds (Injee) of Naples, Italy; stepdaughter, Leisa Lammers (Stephen) Muskogee, OK; grandchildren & great-grandchildren; one brother, Russell Bunch (Barbara) of Kanopolis, KS; and a sister, Jeannie Fuqua of Garden City, KS.

She is preceded in death by Mac McPherson & Paul Clark; her parents; one brother, Dick Bunch; and five sisters, Beth Ann Gamble; Ardith Modrow; Edna Ryan, Judy Shroeder, and Melba Bunch.

Jolene enjoyed her family, camping at the lake, her flowers, and occasional trips to the casino.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha from 10 until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Graveside services are planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2020, City Cemetery, Kanapolis, KS. Shane Spangler will officiate.

Pauline Grace Jacobs, 84, of Horton, Kansas passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

Pauline was born on August 20, 1935 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of William Albert and Elsie Marie Soden Everson.

She was a homemaker and worked for nursing homes as a CNA. Pauline loved country music, watching America's Funniest Videos, sitting outside watching her cats, embroidery, crochet, cross stitch, taking care of her green plants, home projects and was a pen Pal for the Veterans.

She married Milton "Dale" Jacobs. He preceded her in death on August 31, 2019.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan (Bryan) Willey of Sabetha, Kansas; three sons, Alden (Pam) Jacobs of Horton, Kansas, Terry Jacobs of White Cloud, Kansas and Richard (Dee) Jacobs of Republic, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Billie Jacobs, Willie Jacobs, Ashelgh Jacobs, Tonya Voigt, Cody Jacobs, Dustin Willey, Tyler Nicholas and Shelby Sperline and numerous great grandchildren. Pauline was also preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Nora Maxine Jacobs.

Clet Wessel, 66, of Salem, NE, passed away July 31, 2020 at Salem. He was born February 19, 1954 at Goff, KS to Henry and Gertrude (Akin) Wessel.

He married Mary Jane Buessing on February 17, 1973 at Baileyville, KS

Clet was raised in various places in Kansas and Missouri and attended Baileyville High School. He worked for the railroad, Stalder Cattle, Keim Trucking and farmed for Lonnie Goff for 34 years. When married the couple established their home in Seneca and moved to the Salem area in 1976 and has lived there since. He retired in 2018. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Clet is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Salem, children, Ed and his wife Andrea of Crocker, MO, Michelle Wessel of Lincoln, NE, Melanie Rieger of Falls City, Janelle Wessel-Sterling and her husband David of Iola, KS, brother, Fred and his wife Linda of Lee’s Summit, MO, sisters, Anna Marie Segenhaggen and her husband Wayne of Wetmore, KS, Betty Vest and her husband Gleamon of Long Lane, MO, Florence Brown and her husband Bill of Louisburg, MO, Terri Sherman and her husband Bruce of Peru, NE, Rita Yunghans and her husband Jim of Axtell, KS, Emma Krogman of Havensville, KS, Julie Wessel of Meriden, KS and twelve grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Lawrence Stoley officiating. Inurnment will be in Maple Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited on Wednesday at 2:30 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home and also at 7:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home on the same day.

Dorothy Joan (Platt - McNeill) Strahm, 97, passed away on July 29, 2020. 

She was born on March 21, 1923 in Kansas City, Kansas to James E. and Irene R. (Tate) Platt.  Dorothy was one of 4 children: older sister, Elizabeth “Betty” J. Drown (Platt); younger brother, James E. Platt Jr.; and younger sister, Mary M. Massey (Platt). 

Her parents and all siblings preceded her in death.  Dorothy was married to Leo Jake McNeill on June 15, 1957 in Parsons, Kansas.  Leo subsequently passed away from pancreatic cancer on February 11, 1968; Dorothy had 3 children with him. 

Dorothy married Matthias John Strahm V, her husband of 48 years, on April 26, 1972 in Prairie Village, Kansas and he survives.

Surviving are her 3 children: Jeannine M. Wolf (Stephen A.) of Loudon, Tennessee; Colin Brett McNeill (Kim E.) of Kokomo, Indiana and Michelle D. Koerner of Leo, Indiana.  Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and their spouses: Douglas A. Wolf (Brynn) of Morristown, Tennessee; Janet L. Ramick (Keith D.) of Sammamish, Washington; Lauren D. Van Wassenhove (Sandor J.) of Seattle, Washington; Brittany D. Achard (Christopher T.) of Carmel, Indiana and Colin P. McNeill (Laurissa Nieto) of Newport Beach, California; Taylor R. Koerner (Lisa M.); Austin J. Koerner (Ashley N.) and Monica E. Koerner, all of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Eight great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was baptized, attended catechism classes and was confirmed as a member of the St. Peters Roman Catholic Church in Kansas City, Kansas while growing up. She attended Bishop Ward Catholic High School in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated in 1941.   She was active in high school and played guard for the girls’ basketball team. Upon graduation, her first job was hand folding greeting cards for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City.  She subsequently had a position in the commercial credit department with Transcontinental and Western Airlines (later, Trans World Airlines) and worked for TWA for 16 years while single.

Before marriage, Dorothy enjoyed traveling and flying with Trans World Airlines and attending sporting events (basketball and football) and attended several Notre Dame football games in South Bend, Indiana.  She particularly delighted in telling the story of going to the 30th anniversary of the “Four Horsemen of Notre Dame” football game and celebration in October 1954.

Upon marriage to Leo McNeill, they resided in Kansas City area and then moved to Bethany, Oklahoma in December 1966.  After a string of hospitalizations, Leo was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late January, 1967 and they relocated back to the Kansas City area (Prairie Village) to be closer to family and friends.  Leo McNeill and Matt Strahm became friends while working at Black & Veatch in Kansas City and jointly owned a private aircraft.  Matt became a cherished friend of the family and of Leo & Dorothy’s children.  Leo subsequently succumbed to cancer on February 11, 1968.

After marrying Matt in April 1972, Dorothy and the 3 children moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois where the children attended high school, graduated, and left for their college educations.   Dorothy was active in Crystal Lake as an election judge and was President of the Women’s Christian Club for many years.  Dorothy was a lifelong, avid reader of history and biographies of notable men and women.  She also enjoyed traveling a great deal and was for a period of time an artist, painting with oils.  She was a devoted and faithful wife, mother and homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and their many activities.

Dorothy and Matt moved to Sabetha, Kansas in 1996 into the West Village Independent Living section of the Apostolic Christian Retirement facility.  Dorothy and Matt attended the Bern Apostolic Christian Church and were active in the community. They supported community projects such as “Meals on Wheels” by being drivers in the Sabetha area and also supported local philanthropic causes like the new wing of the Sabetha Hospital.   

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 10:30AM at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha, Kansas.  A Holy Catholic Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 5:00 P.M. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha with visitation to follow from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Graveside service will following at the Bern Apostolic Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kansas or to the Sabetha Apostolic Christian Home “Nursing Home Replacement Project”.  Dorothy and Matt have received outstanding care from this facility for past 7 years.

Ruthanna E. Kimmi, 93, of Atchison KS died Friday morning, July 31, 2020 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until time of service on Tuesday at the church. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Trinity Lutheran Church Kitchen Fund and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com. Ruthanna was born on April 6, 1927 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Henry and Hulda (Winkler) Handke. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1944. She worked as a clerk for the JC Penney Store and then for many years as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Ruthanna was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where she helped with funeral dinners, quilting, and attended Morning Break. She was also a member of the former Shepherds Center, and the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary. She also worked on Saturdays for the former Atchison County Auction Company in the cafeteria. Ruthanna enjoyed painting, quilting, crocheting, her poodle dogs, and working outside.

She was married to Walter “Dale” Kimmi on May 24, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS. Mr. Kimmi preceded her in death on May 26, 2001. Her parents, a daughter Sandy, Kimmi, (Feb 1973) , two brothers, Wilbur and Lewis Handke, and a sister, Henrietta Franklin, also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Kimmi, Atchison, KS.
