Michael D. “Mike” Bodenhausen, 64, of Muscotah, KS, died on Monday, May 29th, 2017 as the result of an ATV accident on the family farm.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Al Schirmacher officiating. Burial will follow in the Muscotah Cemetery. Mike was born on March 4, 1953 in Horton, KS the son of Dale R. and Mary (Freeland) Bodenhausen. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1971 and from Kansas State University with a degree in Dairy Science in 1974. Mike had worked as a fieldman for the Holstein Association of America, and then as a classifier from 1975-1981.  He was a farmer and dairyman in the Muscotah area and had taught dairy judging at K-State 2005-2006.  Mr. Bodenhausen served as the 2nd District Atchison County Commissioner from 2012 – 2015. He was an active member of the Muscotah United Church where he had served as treasurer and as chairman of the board. He was a past president and member of the USD #377 School Board from 1987-1995. Mike also served as a director for the Kansas Dairy Association, and was named the Kansas State Dairy Leader of the Year in 2014. He was a past president of the Kansas Holstein Association, 1992-1993. Mr. Bodenhausen was presently working again as a classifier for the Holstein Association of America.

He was married to Linda Hines on Dec. 6, 1981 in Lancaster, KS.  She survives of the home.  Additional survivors include a son, Ryan (Kayla) Bodenhausen, Muscotah, KS., a daughter, Jeni (Bob) Hespe, Olathe, KS, his mother, Mary Bodenhausen, Muscotah, KS, two brothers, Steven Bodenhausen, Horton, KS and Mark Bodenhausen, Muscotah, KS, two grandchildren, Brinley Bodenhausen, and Thomas “Tommy” Hespe.  His father preceded him in death.

William Arthur Willis, 94, of Horton, passed away on May 31, 2017 at the Horton Community Hospital.

Bill was born on August 28, 1922 in Horton, Kansas the son of Carl W. and Leona Gram Willis. He was raised on the farm homesteaded by his great grandfather in 1859. He shared many memories of growing up and riding his horse around the farm which he later purchased. After high school he served in the U.S. Army during WW II. Bill later worked as a mechanic, truck driver and heavy equipment operator. His main interest was farming and continued to manage the farm until he became ill.

He married Rose Marie Schaefer on November 30, 1949. She survives of the home. Also he is survived by daughter, Michele (Tim) McClaskey, grandchildren Elizabeth, Andrew and Christopher McClaskey. His foster sons, Paul (Lisa) Wenger, David (Trudi) Wenger and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin daughters, Barbara and Beverly, brother, Carl S. and Robert F. Willis.

The family will greet friends on Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. Janice Annette Spiker, 73, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on May 31, 2017 at the Maple Heights Nursing Center in Hiawatha, Kansas.

She was born on August 29, 1943 in Horton, Kansas the daughter of John and Evelyn Robinson Greer.

After high school Janice went on to graduate from Guards Business School in St. Joseph, Missouri. She worked for the Morrill & Janes Bank in Hiawatha as a teller before going to work for the Horton Community Hospital in the medical records department, were she worked for 43 years, before retiring.

Janice was a member of the Horton United Methodist Church, Horton Hospital Auxiliary and loved spending time with her grandchildren. On May 9, 1971 she married Duane Lentz in Horton, Kansas. They later were divorced. She then married William Spiker on August 25, 1990 in Holton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 14, 2007.

Survivors include a son, Tim (Rebecca) Lentz of Horton, Kansas; sister, Jeanne (Roger) Knudson of Everest, Kansas; step son, Bill (Dawn) Spiker III of Mayson, Ohio; step daughter, Rita (Robert) Hill of Everest, Kansas; six grandchildren, Emma Lentz, Carsen Lentz, Austin Spiker, Ryan Spiker, Madison Spiker and T.J. Spiker. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Burial will be at the Horton City Cemetery.

Gerald Francis “Puknina” Lewis, 79, of Mayetta, KS passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Osage City Nursing Care Home. He was born July 21, 1937 in Mayetta, KS the son of Frank and Martha (McKinney) Lewis.

Jerry graduated from Manhattan High School. He worked for A-1 Auto Parts in Manhattan for 19 years and for Santa Fe Railroad for over 20 years as a track welder.

Jerry was a member of Native American Church and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. He was an avid stock car racer, known as “Ugh”.

He married Vernona “Vernie” L. Knoxsah on March 15, 1972 in Ogden, KS. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, Sherry Lewis of Topeka, KS, Sharlene Lopez of Topeka, KS, Terry Hernandez (Raphael) of Minco, OK, Anna Mahkuk of Topeka, KS, Linda Mahkuk (Travis Egbert) of Belleview, KS, Rebecca DeVore of Topeka, KS, Robert Lewis of Mayetta, KS and Melvin Lewis (Tiffany) of Robinson, KS; 2 sisters, Delphine Knoxsah of Topeka, KS and Gale Aitkens of Horton, KS; 4 brothers, Jeff Lewis of Virginia, Roger Lewis of Mayetta, KS, Lyman Shipshee of Mayetta, KS and Kevin Aitkens of Mayetta, KS; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jerry was preceded in death by his son, Tony Mahkuk in 2004 and 2 brothers, Joe Lewis and Melvin Lewis.

William M. “Bill” King, 68, Valley Falls, died Sunday, May 28, 2017, at his home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1949, at Topeka, the son of Willie M. and Oleta Metzger  King. He graduated from Nortonville High School in 1967.

Bill served with the US Navy Seabees in Vietnam as a Construction Electrician Petty Officer 3rd Class. He worked as a telephone repairman for 39 years and was employed by Embarq, Sprint, United, Northern and Continental phone companies. He owned and operated Valley Lawn and Garden in Valley Falls since 2004. He had attended the former Calvary Baptist Church in Ozawkie and was a member of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Valley Falls.

Survivors include three daughters, Gina King, and her husband, Ryan Lammers, Olathe, Traci King, Minneapolis, MN, and Amy King, San Diego, CA; a brother Lewis King, Valley Falls; four sisters, Marsha Weishaar and Judy Keirns, both of Nortonville, Darla Kramer, Carbondale, LeaAnn Schrick, Apex, NC; and two grandchildren, Jayden and Jordan.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Vickie Burk.

A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial with military honors by Grahem-Herbers Post 3084 V.F.W. will be at the Ozawkie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Lee C Arensberg, 90, of Vintage Park, in Atchison, KS passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Atchison Hospital. Lee received exemplary care by all of the wonderful and dedicated staff at Vintage Park and while at the Atchison Hospital. Special thanks also to Connie McCrae, Jacob Campbell, Patty Housh and the St. Croix Hospice staff, as well as everyone at Lopez de Mexico (Anne, Amanda, Debbie and Presley) for helping enrich his later life with family and friends.

Lee Curran Arensberg was born on June 12, 1926 in Atchison Kansas, the son of Lee Charles and Agnes (Curran) Arensberg. Lee saw Naval Service in World War II, on the USS Destroyer, Henry Laub 1944 – 1946, and following his service in World War II, he attended and graduated from Benedictine College with a degree in business and accounting.

While going to Benedictine College, Lee started working part-time at Howard & Kohler Shoe Store starting in 1947. Upon graduating from Benedictine-Lee, his brother (Jack) and mother (Agnes) purchased the store and established Arensberg Shoe Store in 1952, with a later second location in Lawrence and which served the Atchison community for over 50 years until 2002.

Throughout his career, Lee was involved in many community clubs and organizations including the Atchison Chamber of Commerce, Fellowship Club, Knights of Columbus, Elks, American Legion, VFW, Bellevue and Pineview Country Clubs and was a lifelong member of St. Benedict’s church where he participated in Perpetual Adoration and was a Eucharistic Minister to shut-ins.

Lee was known for his keen sense of humor, enjoyed a (not-so occasional) beverage or 2-or maybe 3 and always liked to have a good time. In addition to his intense walking routines, over planting and (over-treating) numerous oak varieties for himself, neighbors and friends, Lee also enjoyed fly-fishing with his family in Crested Butte Colorado every summer-starting at a very young age with his parents and family.

On Nov. 4, 1952 he married the love of his life, Luetta P. Henry. They had a wonderful life together and he will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 65 years, Luetta Pauline (“Lulu”) Arensberg; sons, Lee C. Arensberg (Dan), Mark W. Arensberg (Renny) and James A. Arensberg (Renee); and daughter, Janet G. Arensberg; five grandchildren, Mark C. Arensberg (Katie), Elise C. Arensberg-Byrom (Casey), Briana Arensberg-Smith (Cameron), Annmarie C. Arensberg, Aidan J Arensberg and three great grandchildren (Hudson and Georgia Arensberg and Lincoln Smith just born 5-23-17) as well as his brother, Jack Arensberg (Mary) and sister, Gay Lacy (Vincent). Lee was preceded in death by his father, Lee Charles Arensberg and mother, Agnes Curran Arensberg

Florence C. Hinz, 94, of Vintage Park, Atchison, KS, died Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Atchison Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Florence was born on April 1, 1923 in Farmington, KS the daughter of Harry and Caroline R. (Bodenhausen) Schrader. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1940.

She worked part time for 15 years in the Atchison County Extension Office and worked as a secretary for Atchison County Noxious Weed Department for 16 years. Florence was a member of the Effingham Union Church, a member of the Sara Circle, the 48er’s Club, the Senior Citizens, Effingham, and the Sunny Hill Thimble Club.  She was active as superintendent of the Open Class Foods for the Atchison County Fair for many years. Florence enjoyed quilting, embroidery, and cooking. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She was married to George (Junior) Hinz, Jr. on January 1, 1943 at Camp Creek United Methodist Church.  Mr. Hinz preceded her in death on November 10, 1994. 

Survivors include a son, Don (Sara) Hinz, Effingham, KS, two daughters, Mary Kay (Danny) Barnett, Effingham, KS, and Carolyn (Mike) Turvey, Shawnee, KS, eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.  Her parents, husband, two brothers, Floyd and Edwin Schrader, and two infant granddaughters preceded her in death.

Ilene M. Lundy, 99, formerly of Hiawatha, died at Midlands Hospital, Papillion, Nebraska, Friday morning, May 26, 2017.

Ilene was born northeast of Falls city, Nebraska, January 25, 1918, to the late Lawrence and Edith Gerwick Bauman. She was a lifelong resident of the southeast Nebraska/Northeast Kansas area. Ilene graduated from Falls City High School.  She later attended and graduated from Platt Gard Business College in St. Joseph, Missouri.  She went to work for Triple AAA Office in Falls City, where she was employed until the time of her marriage.

In October, 1940, she married William I. Lundy of Shubert, Nebraska. They lived in Hiawatha, Kansas all of their married life where he worked in the engineering department for Kansas Power and Light until retiring.   She worked for some time at the Hiawatha Daily World, the Soil Conservation Service.  In December 1952, she went to work for the Kansas Power and Light Company, where she worked until she retired January 31, 1981.  He died November 5, 2011.

Mrs. Lundy was a longtime member of St. Ann Catholic Church of Hiawatha; and the Altar Society of the Church.  She enjoyed embroidery and making doll clothes for her grand-daughters.  She loved playing cards and belonged to several card clubs over the years.  She taught all her grandchildren card and board games and spent hours playing with them.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith Welton (Myron) of LaVista, Nebraska; a son James (Dorothy) Lundy of Minot, North Dakota; a sister Mary Lou Barrow of Lodi, California; grandchildren:  Craig Lundy, Philip Lundy, Sarah Holtzmann (Patrick), Jennifer Sheeran (Chris), Mariah Crouser (Mark)  Shannah Portwood (Nathan)  great-grandchildren:  Kieran Lundy, Jason, Savannah, Elizabeth, and Christopher Holtzmann, Addison and Liam Sheeran, Crosby, Wrenna and Maylee Crouser, Alexi and Livia Portwood.

Ilene was also preceded in death by a brother Sylvester Bauman, and a sister Lorraine Albert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon Thursday, June 1, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha, with Father Dan Gardner officiating.  Interment will follow at Hiawatha Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, with the family visiting with friends following rosary until 8 p.m.

Norma Louise Marsh, 81, Ozawkie, died Friday, May 26, 2017, at her home.

She was born April 7, 1936, at Indianapolis, IN, the daughter of Norman and Ruth M. “Pat” Geyer. She graduated from Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis, in 1954.

Norma worked as a reading aide in the Shenandoah District Schools at Middletown, IN. She had worked in customer service at the L.S. Ayers Department Store in Indianapolis and later at Sears in Topeka.

She was a member of Sixth Street Christian Church in Middletown, IN and had attended the Way of the Cross United Methodist Church in Ozawkie.

She married Terry C. Marsh, Oct. 1, 1960, at Indianapolis. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Jerry W. Marsh, Austin, TX, and William A. Marsh, Ozawkie; her daughter, Terri L. (Gordon) Smith, Fisher, IN; her brother, Ronald Geyer, Kokomo, IN; and two grandsons, Cooper and Jack Smith.

Betty Jo Pilcher, 62, Atchison, Kansas died Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

Betty Jo was born June 21, 1954 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Robert and Bonnie Hembrow Liggett. She attended Atchison elementary Schools, graduating from Atchison High School in 1972.

Betty Jo was employed for over twenty two years as a sewing machine operator at Saunders Manufacturing Company in Atchison.

In her free time she enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, playing the lottery and trying to win and watching and tending to her beloved animals. Betty Jo especially enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include, two daughters Calley (Porter) Hampton, Atchison, KS; Missy Pilcher, Atchison, KS; four sisters, Vickie Bryant, Conyers, GA; Ann (Mike) Brentano, Overland Park, KS; Linda (Stan) Alexander, McLouth, KS; Merry Beth (Jim) Babcock, Agency, MO; three brothers, Robert (Lenora) Liggett, Kansas City, MO; Darrell (Floydean) Liggett, Atchison, KS; Pat Liggett, Atchison, KS; five grandchildren, Sadie Wojtowicz, Chase Wojtowicz, Kaitlyn, Hannah and Joel Hampton, and one great granddaughter, Ava Starling.

Jessie Clark, Jr., 70, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 24, 2017 at Falls City. He was born December 6, 1946 at Kansas City, MO to Jessie and Myrtle (Liberty) Clark, Jr.

Jessie was raised in Kansas City and graduated St. Pius X. Following graduation, he worked various management jobs, was employed by the United States Postal Service, then at Hill Air Force Base doing billeting, worked for the IRS and finally as a tax preparer for H & R Block. He moved to Falls City in 1997 and retired in 2000. He was a supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project and St. Jude’s Hospital.

Jessie is survived by his spouse Fae Gregory of Falls City, children, Stephan and Elizabeth Clark both of Missouri, Mary Clark of Falls City, Shawna Merrill and Susie Moss both of Utah, Joe Clark of Excelsior Springs, MO, sister, Candy Stears of Kansas City, MO and fourteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ralph Clark and a sister, Linda Clark

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Mount Moriah Cemetery South at Kansas City, MO.

Willis Edward “Fibber” McGee, 93, of Holton, KS, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Holton Community Hospital. He was born March 8, 1924 in Holton, the son of Carl and Mary E. (Hug) McGee.

Fibber graduated from Mayetta High School in 1942, this year would have been his 75th class alumni. After high school, he proudly served in the United States Army during WWII.

Fibber was a lifetime mechanic, owning and operating McGee Service in Mayetta, Holton and at his home. He was a security guard at Holton Government Missile Base (currently Jackson Heights schools), he worked for Holton Transport for 9 years, and as a mechanic at Skelly Station. Fibber also worked for City of Holton for 10 years as an operator for the power plant and for Holton Ready Mix for 5 years.

He had attended the Presbyterian Church in Holton, a member of American Legion Post #44, a member of V.F.W. Post #1367, and he was a volunteer firefighter for many years.

Fibber married Betty Lou Cox on October 26, 1945 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on September 16, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Michael McGee (Vickie) of Hoyt, KS; 2 daughters, Carolyn Jacobsen (Dale) of Circleville, KS and Jo Ingels (Steve) of Holton, KS; 9 grandchildren, Randy Jacobsen (Sandy), Shane Jacobsen, Chad Jacobsen (Jamie), Micki Austin, J.D. McGee (Yvonne), Jeff Ingels, Kevin Ingels (Jennifer), Jeremy Ingels (Darla) and Kyle Ingels (Katie); 17 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Ted Phroper, 57, of Cortland, NE, passed away May 22, 2017 at his home. He was born May 1, 1960 at Falls City, NE to Mike and Doris (Mackey) Phroper.

Ted Served in the Nebraska National Guard Reserves, Company B, at Falls City from 1979 to 1988.

On April 3, 1978 he married Gail Smith at Hiawatha, KS.

Ted was raised at Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1978. Following graduation he became employed by Falls City Meat Company and when the couple moved to Lincoln he opened and operated Phroper’s Fish Market. He became employed by Lincoln Public Schools for four years before he started Kleen Building Service, a commercial cleaning service he operated until his retirement in 2013.

Russell “Dean” Horner, 79, of Troy, Kansas passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at his home. Dean was born on September 17, 1937 in Robinson, Kansas to Charles & Daisy (Shaiffer) Horner. 

He was a member of the U.S. Air Force, Troy American Legion Post #55 & UTU. Dean retired as a Conductor for the UP Railroad. 

Dean married Marilyn Thompson on August 9, 1969. She survives of the home. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Sandy Goltz, brother, Keith Horner & a sister, Fern Shelton.

Justin Arthur Smith, 42, of Centralia, Kansas passed away Sunday, May 21, 2017, from complications from a motorcycle accident.

He was born July 30, 1974, in Onaga, Kansas, the son of Terry E. Smith and Dreda A. (White) Smith.

Justin graduated in 1992 from Centralia High School.  He completed the Diesel Technology program from the ICS Learning Systems, the Farrier Science program at Pikes Peak Community College, as well as several mechanical programs through the Army.  He joined the U.S. Army in April of 1993, honorably discharged in 2000. He was part of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).   He served two terms in Bosnia during his time in the Army.  While in the service he was awarded the NATO Medal for Service with NATO on Operations in Relation to the Former Yugoslavia, two Good Conduct Medals, and the Meritorious Service Medal upon discharge.  Justin was a disable veteran, and was always proud of his service.

Justin was an avid outdoorsman and turned his love of the outdoors into his career. He was a Guide for Broken Arrow Outfitters, guiding hunts in Kansas, Nebraska and Texas. Justin was always one to look for adventure whether it be on land or water. He spent countless hours riding his Harley-Davidson and finding ways to get out on the water, either to take time fishing and just enjoying time with family and friends.

Justin married Judy Mosson on August 26, 1994, in Colorado Springs, Colorado; they later divorced.

Surviving are his daughters, Meagan Smith and Jocelyn Smith both of Westmoreland; parents, Terry and Dreda (White) Smith of Centralia; a brother, Jonas Smith and wife Ashley of Waterville; sisters, Jessica Schneider and husband Shawn of Frankfort and Janell Crotinger and husband Kerry of Topeka; Maternal Grandmother, Elaine White of Centralia; five aunts and uncles; and eight nieces and four nephews.

Justin will lie in state at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 6 to 8 P.M. where family will receive friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Community East Church in Centralia.

Interment will follow in the Centralia Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

Richard Paul Kumpf was born January 27, 1936 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the youngest of three children born to Rev. Fred and Esther (Hoffmann) Kumpf.  He was baptized March 8, 1936 by his father at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Humboldt, South Dakota.  When Richard was 6 years old he moved with his family to rural Johnson, Nebraska where his father served as the pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church. Richard was confirmed by his father on March 18, 1951 at Zion Lutheran Church.  He graduated from Johnson Public High School in 1954 and continued his education at Luther College in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; Peru State College and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. 

Richard was a math school teacher for 25 years.  His teaching career took him to the following schools in Nebraska: Cook Public School, Hooper Public School, North Platte Senior High School, and Fort Calhoun Public Schools.  In 1985, Richard made a career change and graduated from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service in Dallas, Texas.  He moved to Auburn, Nebraska in 1986 and served as a funeral director for Casey-Witzenburg Funeral Home for 13 years, retiring in 1999.  He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in rural Johnson, serving on the church council and singing in the church choir. 
Richard enjoyed playing the euphonium and the tuba.  While in North Platte, he played with the North Platte Municipal Band and the Sandhills Symphony. He was a member of the Polka Pioneers Band in Fort Calhoun. In Auburn, Richard enjoyed playing with the Nemaha County Brass Quintet and the Southeast Nebraska Community Band. 

Richard passed away on May 22, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Center in Auburn, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of 81 years, three months, and twenty-five days.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister and brother-in-law Winnifred and Rev. Donald Voigts. 

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Doris and Rev. John Keller of Wauwatosa, WI; nephews: David Keller of Pewaukee, WI; , Phillip Keller of Hot Springs Village, AR; Joel Keller of Woodstock, IL; nieces: Debora Voigts of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Rebecca Voigts Larson Kitchener, Ontario; Phoebe Voigts of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; other relatives and friends. 

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church in Johnson, Nebraska with Pastor Robert Rademacher officiating.

Walter Edward Boldridge, Jr., 80, Atchison, Kansas died Monday May 15, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at First Christian Church with Rev. Samuel Kyser officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Walter was born March 30, 1937 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Walter Boldridge, Sr., and Grace R. Beadles Boldridge. He attended grade school in Sumner and District #20 rural school, graduating from Atchison County Community High School. He then attended Ft. Scott Community College, Kansas University, Pittsburgh State College and Wichita State College.

He and Iva Leola Todd, of Oskaloosa, KS, were united in marriage on December 8, 1956 in Atchison, Kansas. Mrs. Boldridge preceded him in death on September 10, 2006.

Walter worked at LFM Foundry while in high school, and continued employment there until moving to Oskaloosa, Kansas in 1966. He then worked for Jefferson County and the City of Oskaloosa performing numerous duties. From 1972 until 1976 he worked for Goodyear Tire. He then began working for the City of Atchison at the Waste Water Treatment Plant until his retirement in 1993. Walter was engaged in farming all of his life; he was also known as a horse trainer in the community for his own horses and those of his friends and neighbors. He lead countless trail rides throughout his life.

He was a member of Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church. He became a western art model at the age of 75 at American Frontier Productions and was one of the founders of the Boldridge Riders Saddle Club.

William Frank Hill, 88, of Holton, KS passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at his home. He was born January 11, 1929 in Holton, KS the son of Thomas Logan and Ruth Elizabeth (Arnold) Hill.

William was a life-long member of the Holton farming community. He attended Bateman Grade School and graduated from Holton High School in 1946. William was a farmer and stockman. He was a member and also served on the board of directors for Farm Bureau, Jackson County Livestock, Extension Service, Soil Conservation Service, RC & D, Delaware River WRAPS and Holton Cemetery. William was a lifetime member of First Christian Church in Holton and was also a member of Holton AF&AM #42 Masonic Lodge and Odd Fellows.

He married Sophie Louise Meyer on February 13, 1955 at Manhattan, KS. She preceded him in death on May 18, 2007.

Karen Elizabeth Stous, 70, of Holton, KS passed awayMonday, May 22, 2017 at The Pines in Holton. She was born September 13, 1946 in Gardner, MA, the daughter of Joseph W. and Rita Mae (Gilbert) Gelinas.

Karen graduated from James Madison High School in 1964 at Clairemont, CA. She had lived in the Jackson County communities since 1977. Karen was a mom and homemaker. She had also worked at expressions. Karen most recently worked for Walmart in the jewelry and service desk departments.

Karen was a former member of the EUB Church (presently the EUM Church) and former member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church where she had taught CCD classes. She helped make the wooden caroling figurines for Jackson County Chamber of Commerce that had been displayed during the holidays on the courtyard lawn.

She married Gary L. Stous on July 18, 1969 in Holton, KS. He survives of the home. Other survivors include 2 sons, Gary “Mike” Stous (Anna) of Overland Park, KS and Robert M. Stous (Erin) of Santa Rosa, CA and 6 grandchildren - by blood and by heart, Samuel Stous, Fiona Bowman, Delaney Bowman, Gabby Platt, Sebastien Platt and Sariah Scott.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marie E. Clancy.

Lois Shivers Hodges Puvogel, 84, of Horton, KS died Sunday morning, May 21, 2017 at Mission Village Living Center where she had been a resident for the past 18 months.

She was born August 16, 1932 to John and Bessie Shivers near rural Everest, KS the youngest of 9 children. Lois attended Horton Schools and graduated with the class of 1950. She married Donald L. Hodges on June 12, 1951. To this union three children were born. He preceded her in death October 11, 1975.

Lois married Paul Puvogel in 1980. He survives of the home.

Lois worked for Gockell’s Grocery Store prior to working for Duckwall’s. She worked for Duckwall’s for 20 plus years before retiring due to health reasons.

She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Kansas City Royals and KU Basketball. In her spare time you could find Lois reading, crocheting doilies, working puzzle books, or enjoying her flowers. Lois also loved to dance.

Lois is also survived by her children, Bruce Hodges of Horton, KS, Susan and husband Jerry Hisle of Horton, KS and Kathy Rebant of Sabetha, KS, a sister, Elva Kurtz of Horton, KS., seven grandchildren, Corbin and Daniel Hodges, David, Brad, and Chris Rebant, Mitchell and Mariah Hisle, and numerous step children and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by siblings, Lester Shivers, John Shivers Jr., Opal Shivers, Sarah Shivers, Ada Spiker, Viola Spiker, and Virginia Meerphol.

Graveside Services are planned for 11 a.m., Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the Horton Cemetery. Pastor Darrell Treat of the Horton Baptist Church will officiate. Friends and family will meet at the mortuary by 10:45 a.m. prior to gravesides services to go in procession to the cemetery.

Marjorie was born on September 1, 1926 in White Cloud, Kansas the daughter of Charles B. and Jennie B. (Thomas) Cash. She attended Atchison Public Schools and had worked for years as a stock clerk for the former F.W. Woolworth’s Store and S.S. Kresge’s, Atchison. Mrs. Wells’s joy in life was being a wife and mother. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, was an active member of the Priscilla Guild at Trinity, and attended Morning Break, ladies Bible Study Group at church. She had also helped by calling families to help with funeral dinners and enjoyed sports and “John Wayne “movies. Marjorie was known by many as a wonderful cook and a fantastic dessert maker.

She was married to Lohman C. “Bill” Wells, on April 28, 1945 in Leavenworth, KS. He preceded her in death in July, 1990. Survivors include a son, Terry C. and daughter-in-law Joan Wells, Lawrence, KS, and nephew Dan Wells, nieces Pamela Gholson, Georgena King, and Candace Tellez. Her parents, husband, a brother, George J. Cash, and sister, Wilma Grace Wells also preceded her in death.

Joe was born on May 1, 1925 in Atchison KS, the son of Joseph J. Sr., and Mary M. (Ruhlman) Smith.  He attended St. Benedict grade school.  Joseph was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #723 of Atchison.  He enjoyed his family, golfing and gardening. 

Joseph married Marcella Hawk on August 10, 1968 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, she survives of the home.  Additional survivors include a son Joseph E. and Jo Beighley-Smith, Independence, MO, a daughter Kristina and Ken Selby, Grandview, MO, a sister Margaret “Marge” McGinnis, Atchison, KS, four grandchildren, Ian Selby, Adam, Nicholas, Andrew Beighley and lots of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Paul and Robert Smith and two sisters Loretto Smith, Justina Catherine “Kate” Smith.

Fredrick H. “Fred” Newell, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the F.W. Huston Senior Living Center in Winchester.  A lifelong resident of Oskaloosa, He was born December 17, 1931 on the family farm, Northwest of town, the son of Valentine Dixon and Grace Elva Hudson Newell. He attended the Fairview Grade School and was a 1950 graduate of Oskaloosa High School.. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War, serving 1952-1956.  Fred  made farming and a livestock operation his career for 50 years, retiring and moving to town in 2008. He was a member of St. Mary’s-Immaculate Conception Church, Valley Falls, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #4015, Oskaloosa and later of Mount Oread Aerie #309 in Lawrence. He served in the Kansas Livestock Association Cow and Calf Stocker Council and the Jefferson County Co-Op Board of Directors. Fred was awarded the Jefferson County Soil Conservation Award in 1971. He also served as Sexton and Board Member of the Fairview Cemetery Association for many years.
 He was married to Mary Louise Wagner on May 28, 1960 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Mooney Creek. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary L. Newell, of the home, two daughters, Carolyn (Terry) Robbins, Oskaloosa, Sharon (Claude) Powell, Shawnee, one brother, Frank Newell, Winchester, three grandsons, Mitchell Powell and Lucas Powell, both of Shawnee, and Gabriel Robbins, Oskaloosa.  He was preceded in death by one son, Phillip Newell, two sisters, Helen Mae Stevick and Velma McAferty, and two brothers, Arthur and Kenneth “Bud” Newell.
 Fred enjoyed his family, friends, livestock operation, hunting, country music and dancing.

Alice B. (Bartram) Hervey, 90, of Sabetha, KS passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Apostolic Christian Home.

Alice was born on May 25, 1926 in Violet, Nebraska to Ulysses Grant and Rena (Maguire) Bartram. She attended elementary school in the Berwick district and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1945. After graduation she moved to Topeka, Kansas where she met her husband, George Hervey, Jr. They married in Topeka on January 3, 1947. She worked for the Ohse Meat Company in Topeka for thirteen years. She eventually gave up employment there to be with her husband as he traveled with his job with the Veterans Hospital system. She enjoyed traveling and playing pool in women’s tournaments. She also enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives. Alice was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Jim Bartram and Elmer Bartram.

She is survived by her husband, George Hervey, Jr.; four nieces, Eleanor (Lee) Thompson of Mulvane, KS, Betty Anne (Lester) Niehues of Sabetha, KS, Connie (Mark) Scarlett of Spokane, WA, and Carmen Yost of Sabetha, KS; three brother-in-laws, John (Roma) Hervey, Dan (Sue) Hervey, and Don (Lea Ann) Hervey; two sister-in-laws, Elain Ellenwood, and Shirley (Walt) Richards; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends and relatives.

Cleo Ann Tillery, 80, Meriden, formerly of Valley Falls, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Midland Care at Linnwood Park Home Plus at Valley Falls.
 
She was born March 20, 1937, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Jack and Zelda Mae Davenport Dick. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1955.

In addition to being a homemaker, Cleo was a dental assistant for 38 years. She worked first in Topeka and then alongside her husband, Dr. Fred Tillery, in their dental practice in Valley Falls.

Cleo was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Centenarian Club, and PEO Chapter DK, all in Valley Falls. She was also a member of American Legion Post 225 at Ozawkie, and the Ladies of Moose Lodge 555 and the Women’s Dental Auxiliary, both in Topeka.    

She married James Fred Tillery, March 11, 1956, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. He died April 27, 2006.

Survivors include three sons, Brad (Terry) Tillery, Meriden, Dr. Bruce Tillery, Ozawkie, and Bryan (Angie) Tillery, Valley Falls; her daughter, Carla (Dr. John) Davis, Georgetown, DE; two brothers Clifford (her twin), and Max Dick, both of Perry; her sister, Geraldine Vanover, Topeka; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 12:30 p.m. until service time.

Grace L. (Wiedmer) Hull, 89, of Troy, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at her home. 

Born in rural Troy on April 14, 1928, Grace lived in the Troy community her entire life. She was a graduate of Troy High School, was a member of the former Burr Oak Baptist Church, and later attended the First Baptist Church of Troy. 

Mrs. Hull had been employed several years as the Deputy Clerk of the District Court in Troy before later becoming a full-time homemaker. 

On May 13, 1951 she married Hillman Hull. He survives of the home. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alvera (Laipple) Wiedmer; three brothers, Albert, Charles, and Hubert Wiedmer; and four sisters, Estella Brenner, Scevilla Burroughs, Gwendoline Elliott, and Bernice Edwards.

Galen G. Porting, 54, of Axtell, KS, died May 18, 2017 at Bryan Medical Center n Lincoln, NE.

Visitation will be Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell, KS.

Donald Evans Ham, 95, of Princeton, IL, died Thursday, May 11, 2017 in Rice Lake, WI.

He was born April 20, 1922 in Barada, NE to Clifton and Edith (Dean) Ham. After high school, he joined the CCC, and served 18 months before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943. Don served as a Seabee in the Philippines and New Guinea. After his service, Don married Margaret Hall in Hiawatha, KS on March 29, 1946. They began their family while he farmed and attended Diesel Engine School in St. Louis, MO. Don worked for several years for the Auburn Municipal Power Plant, then for Worthington Corporation where he installed and repaired huge diesel engines for power plants throughout the U.S. In 1973, he became power plant manager for the city of Princeton, IL until his retirement.

 
Don was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, and took his family to ball games and the St. Louis Zoo. He was a talented woodworker who combined that with his love of nature to create beautiful duck decoys and bird sculptures. Don was involved in the Princeton, IL VFW and the Northern Bluegrass Association for a long part of his life. Don developed an obsessive passion for Bluegrass music, and taught himself to play fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin. He and his bands played all throughout Illinois. 

He is survived by his children: Barb (Mike) Sorenson of Rice Lake and Neal (Margaret) Ham of Omaha, NE; 4 grandchildren: Ted (Michele) Schuler, Tim (Elizabeth) Schuler, Jaymie (Tom) Van Valkenburg, Jessica (Dan) Stalnaker; 14 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret on March 9, 2015. He was also preceded in death by siblings: Chester Ham, Ruth Eckley, Mabel Ryder, Leslie Ham, Robert Ham, Herbert Ham, Samuel Ham, Ethel Brown, Vivian Laughlin, Vera Dunn, and Alta Faye Stubbs. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Hemmingsen Funeral Home - Auburn, NE with Rev. Bob Chitwood officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Union Cemetery - Richardson County, NE. Pallbearers are Delbert Eickhoff, Dan Stalnaker, Tom Van Valkenburg, Stephan Schuler, Geoff Schuler, and Thomas Schuler. Honorary Pallbearers are Tim Schuler II, Trevor Schuler, and Thomas Van Valkenburg Jr. Visitation will be held for 1 hour prior to the service.

Edna Emma Lydia (Becker) Witt, 99 of Falls City, NE passed away May 15, 2017 at the Falls City Healthcare Community. She was born February 3, 1918 to Louis and Emelie (Herbster) Becker of rural Falls City.

Edna was raised on the family farm Northeast of Falls City and attended Country school District 25 through 8th grade. She was confirmed in the St. John's Lutheran Church. Edna stayed and helped on the family farm until her marriage to John Witt in May of 1944. John and Edna began their life together farming Northeast of Falls City. They had a family of little boys rather quickly; five in a span of five years (included a set of twins) then followed by another son and daughter. They attended Zion United Church of Christ near their home. Edna was a lifetime resident of Richardson County.

Edna worked very hard raising seven children, vegetable and flower gardens, canning fruit,
vegetables and meat. She also raised chickens and sold eggs. She was an excellent cook and baked bread, cinnamon rolls, pies and always a burnt sugar cake for your birthday. She loved sewing and fancy work. Her daughter Darlene took up quilting and she enjoyed seeing and talking about all of her projects throughout the years. Edna enjoyed music that her husband played on his accordion and Darlene's hymns on the piano. Edna kept a daily diary up until 2015. She journaled about family visits, births and deaths, what flowers bloomed, when potatoes were planted, when it rained and how much. She is the end of an era of the American farm wife and mother as we know it.

Edna is survived by her children Merlyn and (Melanie) Witt of Guadalupita, NM; Duane Witt of Falls City; Dennis and (Beth) Witt of Cypress, TX; Ronald and (Marlene) Witt of Lincoln, NE; Darlene and (Ron) Andreatta of Ely, IA. Grandchildren Jon Witt; Brianne and (Michael) Smith; Brandon Witt; Brian and (Dawn) Witt; Becky and (Chris) Jansen; Marty and (Ali) Witt; Scott and (Megan) Witt. Great-grandchildren August and Hagen Witt; Gracey, Christian, Matthew and Faith Witt; Lily, Laura, Lydia and Luke Jansen; Mallory, Saige and Emerson Witt. She was preceded in death by her husband John, sons Larry and Roger, her parents, sisters Arlene and Lorene Becker, brother's;  Raymond, Walter, Marvin, Richard and Elmer Becker.

Her funeral will be held on Friday May 19th at 10:30 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ with Reverend Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Interment will be in the Steele Cemetery.

Larry Godwin, 83, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 12, 2017 at Falls City. He was born May 10, 1934 at Pleasant Hill, IL to Homer and Rena (Nutt) Godwin.

Larry served in the U. S. Air Force

On March 23, 1958 he married Nelda Dettmer at Arapahoe, NE. She passed away September 30, 2009.

Larry was raised at Hastings and graduated Hastings High School in 1952. He earned a teaching degree from Hastings College and then a Master in Education from Kansas University. The couple moved to Falls City in 1960 and he began teaching for Falls City Public Schools. He was a lifetime member of Falls City Elks Lodge #963 and also Falls City Country Club.

Larry is survived by his sons, Brad and his wife Cynthia of Grandview, MO, Todd and his wife Jyl of Falls City, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

His memorial service will be held on June 17, 2017 at 3:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Weinert officiating.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to service time at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Robert J. “Bob” Domann died Monday May 15, 2017 at the Piper Assisted Living Home in Kansas City, Kansas.

Bob was born on the family farm at Mooney Creek, April 6, 1939, the youngest child of Ben and Genevieve Cunningham Domann. He attended grade school at Mooney Creek and was a 1959 graduate of Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison. He attended St. Benedict’s College for two years.

After being drafted into the U. S. Army, he spent the next two years in the service, mostly in occupied Germany. After his Army discharge he returned home and took over the Domann Oil Company, a service station on the family farm established by his parent’s in 1941. For over fifty years, he served a large area of faithful customers with fuel and many other automotive and farm related items. Because of his health, the business was closed in July of 2014.

Bob was a very generous person who would help anyone, anytime whatever the problems might be. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

He was a lifelong member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church at Mooney Creek. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two brothers, Charles Domann, Atchison, KS, Leslie Domann, Winchester, KS, and fifteen nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

Glenda "Kay" Barber, 74, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on May 11, 2017 at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

She was born on January 12, 1943 in Holton, Kansas the daughter of Glenn and Mildred McBroom Baldwin. Kay attended the United Methodist Church in Holton, Kansas. She worked as a CNA at the Tri-County Manor, Jackson County Nursing Home, Gran Villas in Holton and Hiawatha before retiring in 2006.

She married Willis Barber in Topeka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 1, 2007.
Survivors include, a daughter, Lynda (Dan) Webster of Horton, Kansas; sister, Clara Marie Kern of Topeka, Kansas; five grandchildren, Ariel Webster, Makayla Webster, Nicole Molina, Nathan Molina and Zach Molina; aunt, JoAnn Dittemore of Kansas City, Missouri and a special cousin, Karra Magnett of Lillis, Kansas.

Rose Marie Bahr, 73, Atchison, Kansas, died Sunday, May 14, 2017, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Rose was born May 1, 1944, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of James A. and Hallie M. Faulkner Coke. She attended elementary school in Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School in 1962. She attended NEKVOTEC and completed various courses, in May 2005 she completed the Para Educator exam.

She and Ronald E. Bahr were united in marriage on June 13, 1965, at the First Christian Church in Atchison.

Rose was employed as a bookkeeper/secretary for Woolworths Department Store, Blish Mize and the Atchison County Attorney’s office. She then served as a Para Professional for Atchison Public schools until 2005.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the Field Artillery Order of Molly Pitcher, and served as a Family Support Coordinator for the Kansas Army National Guard-35th Division. In 2004 she earned the Kanas Army National Guard Military Spouse Award. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Rose enjoyed raising flowers, her pets and being a caregiver for family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Ron Bahr, Atchison, KS, two sons, David (Kara) Bahr, Johnston, IA, Dennis (Trisha) Bahr, Auburn, KS, four granddaughters, Kiersten, Maddison, Kinley, Hallee, a brother, William E. Coke, Independence, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Stacey Bahr, and a brother Carl Coke.

Carol Elaine Wehking, 73, of Lancaster, KS was one of three people who died Friday, May 12, 2017 from an automobile accident on Interstate 29 near Platte City, Mo. Also killed were her daughter and son-in law, Lisa and James Wilson, of Effingham, KS.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 18th, 2017 at the Atchison County Community High School Gymnasium. Burial will follow at 4:00 pm at the Old Huron Cemetery, 310th Rd and Old Huron Rd, Huron, KS. A formal visitation will not be held.

Carol was born on November 10, 1943 in Horton, KS, the daughter of Charles A. and Dorothy M. (Hampton) Lockwood. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School and had worked as a secretary for Atchison County COOP, the Bank of Lancaster, Scholz Insurance Company and most recently Atchison Products. She also owned and operated CR Stitches out of her home. Carol was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, KS, where she had served as organist and choir director. She was highly talented and gifted in music and the creative arts. She was an accomplished pianist/organist and excelled at cooking, gardening, quilting, sewing and interior design. Soft spoken and loving, her absence will leave a hole in the hearts of many.

She was married to Eldon Wehking on November 26, 1961. Mr. Wehking survives of the home. She worked as a Medical Transcriptionist for Hiawatha Hospital. She was a member of the Atchison County Livestock Board and enjoyed gardening, cooking, interior design and her dog “Georgie.” Lisa was a wonderful wife, mother, and daughter. She and her mother, Carol, were best friends.

Lisa was married to James W. “Jim” Wilson on October 31, 1997. Jim was born on October 11, 1962 in Horton, KS, the son of William Oscar and Lila F. (Hochstetler) Wilson. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1981 and attended Vo-Technical School. He worked as a welder/boilermaker for American Boiler in North Kansas City. Jim was a farmer-rancher and co-owner and operator of Wilson Brothers Angus. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Horton, Atchison County Fair Board, Atchison County Livestock Board, Kansas Livestock Association, Brush Creek Cemetery Board and Atchison County Dairy Board. Jim had served as a 4-H Leader for Atchison County, Shannon 4-H Club and the Effingham Community 4-H Club and was active in Future Farmers of America. He and his wife Lisa had been honored with the 4-H Family of the Year Award and the FFA Family of the Year Award. Jim was a family and community-oriented hard worker.

He was married to Lisa R. Wehking on Oct 31, 1997. Survivors include a son, Matthew (Jake) Wisdom, Hiawatha, KS, a step-son Austin (Mariah) Gibson, Horton, KS, his mother, Rev. Lila Wilson, Horton, KS, two brothers, Kenny (Marlise) Wilson, Horton, KS, and Keith (Dolly) Wilson, Muscotah, KS, and two sisters, Wanda (Dale) Small, Muscotah, KS and Sharyl (Phil) Leitch, Everest, KS and a number of nieces and nephews.

Wathena, Kansas Anita “Darlene” Greub, 86, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017 at the Wathena Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Darlene was born on September 29, 1930 in Easton, Missouri to Nathan & Edna (Roberts) Morris.

She graduated from Bendena High School & was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, VFW Auxiliary & the Cordonettes. She was a housewife, worked for DCEC as a Para & cooked for Heartland Healthcare.

Darlene married Clement Greub Sr. on July 8, 1950 in Wathena, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents & 2 sisters, Delores England & Dorrene Mitchell.

Mary Margaret Hart Broadfoot, 92, Holton, died May 13, 2017 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.  She was born February 7, 1925, in Westmoreland, the youngest of six children of Col. Harry Lair Hart and Bernice Heath Hart. 

Mary Margaret graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1943, and then worked at the Pottawatomie County Probate Court office before attending Baker University where she graduated in 1948.  She married Kenneth H. Broadfoot on July 4, 1948 in Westmoreland.  The couple lived in Baldwin from 1948 to 1950, where she worked for Academic Dean Gessner at Baker University, and then followed Kenny’s career in education to Oskaloosa from 1950 to 1952, Effingham from 1952 to 1968, Westmoreland from 1968 to 1971, Pomona from 1971 to 1972, and Holton from 1972 to the present.  She worked as a school secretary at Effingham and Westmoreland, Gambles Department Store in Holton, and for 12 years at The Denison State Bank in Holton, retiring in 1989. 

She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority at Baker, and the Evangel United Methodist (EUM) Church in Holton, where she was a member of the Kings’ Daughters Sunday School class. Mary was active in music at the church as a choir alto, bell choir member, and organist.  She was a member of the Holton Tourists’ Club, St. Cecilia’s Music Club, and Meriden Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include daughter Jane Willich, Manhattan, and sons Douglas Broadfoot (Jennifer) of Hesston, KS and Richard Broadfoot (Maya) of Portland, OR.  Other survivors include 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren plus one great-grandson due this July.  Mary was preceded in death in by her parents, husband Kenneth, son Michael, daughter-in-law Wanda, and siblings Elizabeth, Helen, Thomas, Donald, and Harry Lair Hart, Jr. 

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2017 at Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton.  Cremation is planned.  Private family inurnment will be in Westmoreland City Cemetery.  Family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Mary Luann Nauman, 62, of White Cloud, KS, passed away May 14, 2017 at White Cloud. She was born March 4, 1955 at Falls City to Melvin and Vivian (Alexander) Campbell.

In 1974 she married Dennis Lee Nauman at Mound City, MO. They were divorced in 1990.

Luann was raised in various places and when married the couple established their home in Mound City, MO. She was employed by the State of Missouri, McIntire Lumber and also worked with her husband’s construction business and at White Cloud Casino. She was also a homemaker for a number of years and helped take care of her grandchildren. She was a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

William “Bill” Woodruff, Jr., 62, of Stella, NE, passed away May 11, 2017 at Lincoln, NE. He was born April 15, 1955 at Pensacola, FL to Andy Cooper and the late Jean Allen.

On November 25, 2010 he married Mary Spicer at Battle Creek, NE.

Bill was raised in various places due to his father’s military service. He was a truck driver his entire life until having to retire due to his health in 2009. He had been a resident of Richardson County since 2010. He spent the last couple of years enjoying life, especially his grandchildren and fishing.

Bill is survived by his wife, Mary of Stella, daughters, Stephanie Corliss and her husband Mason of Stella, Jennifer Woodruff of Sioux Falls, SD, Amanda Andlet of Marysville, KS, son, Warren Paul of Sterling, NE, step-son, Jason James of Falls City, father, Andy Cooper and his wife Jane of Ft. Towson, OK, brother, Dale Allen of Cedar City, UT, grandchildren, Jamie, Justin & Jaxon Woodruff, Hunter & Brooklyn Hestermann, Aaron Hormann, Austin Hestermann. He was preceded in death by his mother and a son, Jason Scott Woodruff.

Jay W. Glynn, 88, of rural Axtell, KS, died May 13, 2017 at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital in Pawnee City, NE.

Visitation will be Monday, May 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell.

A rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Axtell.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 16 at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Father Barry Clayton will officiate. Kathy Buessing will play the organ. Music will include “Morning has Broken”, “You Are Mine”, “Seed, Scattered and Sown”, and “Though the Mountains May Fall”.

The pallbearers will be Jeremy Glynn, Josh Glynn, Eric Schmitz, Bob Mathewson, Rob Yunghans, and Merle Duryea.

Burial will be in St. Bridget Cemetery north of Axtell.

Jay was born June 29, 1928, on a farm north of Summerfield, KS, to Charles William "Bill" and Reva (Mitchell) Glynn. He attended Lonestar Country School. At the age of 14, he lived with his Grandpa and Grandma Mitchell to help his Grandpa with the farming. He graduated from high school in Seneca, KS.

On May 29, 1951, he married Rita Feldkamp. They lived on Grandpa and Grandma Mitchell's farm and raised their children, Leroy, David, Deanna, and Nancy.

Jay loved the farm, raising Hereford cattle, going to auctions, and restoring old cars and trucks. Jay and Rita took their cars and trucks to car shows, parades, and occasionally weddings. He restored the first car he bought, a 1930 Model A Ford. He was also very proud of restoring a REO Speedwagon. He never knew a stranger and enjoyed laughing with people.

We will miss his stories and laughter.

He was preceded in death by his son, Leroy; parents, Bill and Reva Glynn; sister, Margaret "Peggy" Glynn; and a grandson, Jason Oenbring.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Glynn, of the farm; son, David (Maxine) Glynn; daughters, Deanna Oenbring (special friend Mike Sheldon), and Nancy (Roger) Thiemann, Pawnee City, NE; 5 grandchildren, Jeremy and Josh Glynn, Eric Schmitz, Holly Wempe, and Megan Thiemann; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Leo (Doris) Glynn; and a sister, Helen (Jack) Transue.

James David “JD” Cameron 82 of Summerfield, Kansas passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Pawnee County Hospital.  He was born on May 22, 1934 to Glenn and Selma (Yonkey) Cameron in Pawnee County.

Wathena, Kansas - Barbara “Lynn” Rice, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at her home. Lynn was born on December 14, 1944, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to William D. & Gertrude (Hewins) Kiehnhoff. 

She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Women’s Council, the Wathena Garden Club, the Red Hatters, and was active in various Bible studies. Lynn worked for the Farmers State Bank, for over twenty years. Lynn was an avid traveler and developed many friendships over the years. She was always excited to watch Dain and Kaelin play sports. Basketball season was a highlight for Lynn; she enjoyed watching and attending, KU games. Lynn was a great giver of her time, she never met a stranger and she leaves behind many special friends. Lynn married Ronald F. Rice on December 29, 1962 in Wathena, Kansas. He preceded her in death on February 27, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Dennis Gene Teske, 74, of Sabetha, died Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.
 
He was born April 29, 1943 in Topeka , the son of Arnold and Lenora Honig Teske.  He graduated from Onaga High School in 1961 and from Pittsburg State University in 1965.
 
Dennis worked for the Van Doren, Hazard and Stallings Architecture Firm and later for the Joe Weekly Architecture Firm, both in Topeka.  In 1973 he and Joyce moved to Onaga where they farmed and raised livestock until 2000.
                                                                                                                                         
He was a founding member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Onaga, a member of the Farmer’s Coop Association in Manhattan, serving as president and secretary-treasurer from 1987 to 2002, a board member of the Production Credit Association, Pottawtomie County Farm Bureau, serving as president from 1975 to 1981, Rural Fire District No. 3 for seventeen years, Young Farmers at Onaga and the Onaga Jaycees .
 
Dennis married Joyce Jepson on May 2, 1970 in Topeka. She survives, of the home.
 
He was preceded in death by a son, David Gene Teske, who died January 16, 2014, and two sisters, Myra Teske and Alice Teske.
 
Other survivors include a son, Kirk Teske, Sabetha; two daughters, Sherri Magnett (Charles), Omaha, NE and Melody Craig (Daniel), Sabetha; a sister, Jolene Cervantes (Lorenzo), Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren, Jamie Faris (Steve), Searria Leprich, Chase Magnett (Alex), Page Magnett, Nathaniel Teske, Kaine Teske, Kiley Teske, Malorie Lierz and Rebecca Craig, and six great grandchildren, Aryanna and Lucas Petty, Mirabelle and Gwenevyre Faris, and Arya and Josie Leprich.

Carolyn Marie Larson, 85, of Everest, Kansas, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the Horton Community Hospital.

She was born on March 31, 1932 in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of John and Marie Hanson Holt.

Carolyn worked for the Washington State Employment office and was secretary at Martha & Mary nursing home in Poulsbo, Washington prior to her marriage. On December 28, 1957 she married Luther Larson in Poulsbo, Washington. She was a member of the Carol Baptist Church in Atchison, Kansas, and the Gideons Auxiliary, and enjoyed entertaining and cooking for missionary guests at their home, gardening, sewing and spending time with her family. After she had raised her children, she began a day care center in their home.

Survivors include her husband, Luther Larson of the home; daughters, Karen (David) Krueger of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Kristin (Jamie) LaJoie of St. Joseph, Missouri and Karlene (Timothy) Smith of Everton, Missouri; three sons, David (Linda) Larson of Lockport, New York, Daniel (Michelle) Larson of Everest, Kansas and Paul (Pamela) Larson of Solomon, Kansas; brother, Raymond Holt of Poulsbo, Washington; 21 grandchildren, Erik (Amanda), Rachel (Michael), Joel, Sarah, Emily (Jordan), Joseph, Ruth, Lydia, Luke, Rebecca (Jordan), Laura, Jenna, Rebekah, John, Heather (Justin), Joshua, Hannah, Kaitlin, Kirsten, Kassandra and Caleb; and 8 great grandchildren, Jordan, Abigail, Kye, Sydney, Desmond, Juliet, Toby and Jase.

Ronald Douglas Cook passed away Monday, May 1, 2017 in Sioux Falls , S.D. He was born January 30, 1972 in Falls City.

He grew up in Falls City and attended school here through high school.
Ronnie moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and has lived there several years. Ronnie loved music and played the guitar and drums having played in some bands while living in Falls City. He also loved fishing with his cousin. 
 
Ronnie is survived by his sons, Derek and Collin Cook of Falls City; parents, Margie and Larry Cook, brother, Rob Cook; and sister, Jennifer Jamvold, all of Plattsmouth; a special cousin Gary Wenz; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and a niece also survive him.  Also many friends in Falls City and Sioux City.

Michael Paul Boos, 41, a Hiawatha native, died May 9, 2017 at his home in Joplin, Mo of complications related to kidney disease.

Michael was born May 19, 1975 in Hiawatha, KS, one of four children born to Stanly and Donna Kiesling Boos. He was a 1994 graduate of Hiawatha High School.  Michael went on to receive his associates degree in computer science from Vatterott College in Joplin. He was most recently employed by Leggitt & Platt in IT support.  Michael was an avid reader, enjoyed movies and online gaming.

  He is preceded in death by his Father, Stan Boos.

 Michael is survived by his Mother, Donna Boos of Hiawatha. His brother, Mark Boos (Shirley) of Zenda, KS, two sisters, Julie and Jennifer Boos, both of Nashville, TN, two nieces, Alea and Peyton Boos; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

 A Celebration of Michael’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, May 19, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Father Dan Gardner will officiate.

Phyllis Albers Euler, 87, passed away on May 10, 2017.
 

Phyllis was born August 19, 1929 to Glen and Maude (Swaim) Grimes near Falls City, NE, the younger of two daughters, eventually moving to Doniphan County when she was four years old. She graduated from Highland High School and Highland Community College, and attended St. Benedictine College. For several years, she taught grade school in Doniphan and Brown Counties.

She was married in 1951 to Byron Albers for 23 years, lived in Bendena, KS, and was a devoted mother to her two daughters. They were members of the St. John’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was a soloist for numerous weddings, funerals, and community functions. She was active in the PTA, serving as President for one year, and also enjoyed being a 4-H leader for many years.

After Byron passed away, she married Jack Euler in 1975 and lived in Wathena, KS. They were married for 40 years where they dedicated their lives to family and community activities.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Byron Albers and Jack Euler, parents Glen and Maude (Swaim) Grimes, and sister Glenita Martin.

She is survived by daughters Deborah Albers Holthaus (Len) of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Pamela Albers Betta (Joe) of Somerset, PA; granddaughter Pam Hughes (Mike) of St. Joseph, MO; great granddaughter Amanda Chen (Jason) of St. Joseph, MO; great-great grandchildren Trinaty and Tre Chen; nieces Linda Sue Nasse of Overland Park, KS and Joan Burke (Rick) of Kansas City, MO; step-sons Rick Euler (Lori) and Joel Euler (Lynn) of Wathena, KS; step-grandchildren Jennifer Davis (Jason), Aubrey Griffin (Matt), J.T. Euler (Sarah), Zach Euler (Adrienne), Avery Euler, Linus Euler and Kimberly Euler all of Wathena, KS; and 11 step-great grandchildren.

Wilbur D. Nitzsche, 88, of Rulo, NE, passed away May 8, 2017 at Seneca, KS. He was born May 1, 1929 at Rulo, NE to Herbert and Jane (Nissen) Nitzsche.

Wilbur enlisted in the U. S. Army on March 21, 1951 at Omaha, NE. He served as a power shovel operator and earned a Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged on March 12, 1953 at Camp Carson, CO.

On May 1, 1980 he married Ethel Waters at Oregon, MO. She passed away October 31, 2014.

Wilbur was raised north of Rulo and following his schooling he worked as a laborer for many area farmers. When married the couple established their home in Rulo and he had worked at various jobs since then.

Wilbur is survived by a son, Sam Cockerham and his wife Justina of Rulo, a granddaughter, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters, Shirley Ogden and Betty Vogele.

His funeral will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Paster Dan Farley officiating. Interment will be in Rulo Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

Ida Mae Hooper, 94, went home to be with her God Monday afternoon, May 8, 2017, at Vintage Park Assisted Living Apartments in Hiawatha.

Ida Mae Ploeger was born March 11, 1923, at Robinson, KS, one of four daughters born to the late William August Christian and Minnie Celesta Ruth Ploeger and had lived all of her life in Northeast Kansas. She grew up near Hiawatha where she attend Central School, Hiawatha Junior High School, later graduated Hiawatha High School with the class of 1941, where she was one of the first active members of National Honor Society. Ida Mae attended and completed a business course with Chillicothe Business College, Chillicothe, Missouri. It was during World War II, she worked at Hanna Rubber Company in Kansas City.

She married Leonard “Keith” Hooper, July 29, 1945 at First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. They farmed and operated a dairy east of Hiawatha all of their married life until Keith’s unexpected death in 1976. Ida Mae not only was a dedicated farm wife, she also worked as a flexible clerk/carrier for seventeen years for the Hiawatha Post Office. She loved to travel especially with family. She traveled the world: to Europe with a friend Esther Knoche, to Turkey and Australia to visit Bob, to Germany to see Casee, Alaska cruise, Panama Canal cruise, and Mediterranean Sea cruise.

Mrs. Hooper was very dedicated to her Church, First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha, was a very important part of her life: was a Choir member for 31 years; first grade school Sunday school teacher for 25 years; secretary of the Choir, secretary of Esther Circle; Sunday school class officer; and a Latchkey volunteer. She helped build a Sunday school building in Mexico.

Ida Mae was very active in her community: was a member of the ladies auxiliary to VFW Post #5210, Homer White Post #66, American Legion, both of Hiawatha, where served as an officer in both, as well as, president for many years. She was a member of the Sunshine Community Club (years ago); Senior Citizens Center; and Brown County Historical Society. She volunteered at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, and elementary school tutor. She also provided transportation for senior citizens to doctor appointments in Topeka/Kansas City, or KCIl Airport.

When her children were small, she helped with Hiawatha Jayhawkers 4H Club where they were members. Through the years with the avenue of flags, she worked with Mt. Zion Rustlers 4-H Club to put out the flags at the cemetery for Memorial Day.

Ida Mae was a true patriot: gave speeches about the flag at the elementary school for many years. She, with the help of members from the Hiawatha VFW, started the “Avenue of Flags” at Mt. Hope Cemetery. A project she continued working on for over 25 years. At the death of a veteran, she would fly flags at the entrance of the cemetery, flags in honor of the veteran that was being buried, a service that continues today with the help of the Hiawatha American Legion.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter Ann Hall, two sisters: Ruth Carr, and Ruby Nolte.

Survivors include her children: Margaret (Larry) Goering of Newton, KS, Lela (Steve) Hewlett of Valparaiso, IN, Thomas (Beth) Hooper of Hiawatha, KS, Robert (Nancy) Hooper of Chicago, IL; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a son-in-law Ben Hall of Augusta; and a sister Margaret Spare of rural Hiawatha.

A Celebration of Ida Mae’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. Reverend Jacob Cloud will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Jeffery M. Buser, 67, of Seneca, died on May 8, 2017 at Crestview Nursing and Residential Living in Seneca.

Jeff was born on September 19, 1949 to Alfred A. and Gladys L. Wempe Buser. Jeff attended Sts. Peter and Paul School; graduating High School with the Class of 1967. In 1967, Jeff entered in to the United States Navy at Kansas City. Missouri, while in the Navy he served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA42). He was discharged on October 31, 1969 at the rank of E2.

Following the service Jeff attended Barber school in Topeka; where he stayed for 10 years before returning to Seneca. Jeff had various jobs in Seneca, until his poor health forced him to retire.

Jeff loved to read, watch westerns, listen to records, travel and to bowl. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Arthur Mills Post 21 of the American Legion, Seneca Knights of Columbus Council 1769 all in Seneca. Jeff, when he was able, did adoration at the church.

Jeff was preceded in death his father, Alfred on June 30, 2010; his mother, Gladys on January 15, 1998; and a brother, Jon on May 23, 1993.

Jeff is survived by siblings Jim (Theresa) Buser of Huston, Texas, Joe (Rosa) Buser of Manhattan, Kansas, Lisa (Bernie) Ronnebaum, of Seneca and Josh (Katie) of Norman, Oklahoma; and his nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 AM on Friday, May 12th, at Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church at Seneca. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Teresa Ann Peak, 73, of Atchison, KS, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017 surrounded by her family.

Teresa was born on December 27, 1943, in Horton, KS, the oldest child of Charles and Virginia (Lomax) Siebenmorgan. She attended Horton and Atchison schools. She married Robert L. Peak on March 21, 1959. Teresa worked at the Horton Garment Factory until her and Robert started Peak’s Auto Service. She was a member of the St. Joseph Church and VFW where she served as president of the Ladies Auxiliary in the early 1980’s. Teresa enjoyed spending time with her family, decorating her home, embroidering, cross stitch, crocheting, crafts and being on facebook to keep in contact with friends and family.

She is survived by her husband Robert of the home, four daughters, Connie (Alan) Dunster of Effingham, KS, Cheryl (Jeff) Bilderback, Edwards, MO, Vicki Rodriguez, Belton, MO, Bonnie Bilderback, Atchison, KS, a son Charles Peak, Belton, MO a brother Glenn (Marilyn) Siebenmorgan, Hiawatha, KS, a brother in law Ed Underwood. Teresa had nine grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister Joyce Underwood.

Tom McGinnis, 91, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 7, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. A Parish Rosary will be recited on Friday at 7:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home. The family will received friends following the rosary.

Thomas Asa 'Tom' McGinnis, 91, died May 7th, 2017 at Falls City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The son of the late Ernest A and Anna Marie (Adams) McGinnis, he was born April 15th, 1926 near Dawson, NE. Tom was raised on a farm outside Dawson. He attended St. Mary's school there, leaving school early to help his parents with the family farm. 

Tom served his country in both World War II and the Korean conflict.  He joined the Navy and was assigned to a fuel tanker in each tour; the last on the USS Severn AO61. 

On November 14, 1953 he was married to Lois Rosanne 'Anne' Stroud in Forest City, Missouri at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Tom and Anne moved to Falls City, Nebraska and have been residents since 1956.

Mr. McGinnis had worked a variety of jobs prior to his move to Falls City.  He had farmed in Missouri and as far away as Minnesota. He worked for Schoonover's in Mound City prior to joining Firestone. After 33 years of service, Tom retired June 1, 1989. The following Monday, he began a new career with Armbruster Motors. 

Tom is survived by a sister, Margaret Weagel; his brothers Carl and Mike McGinnis; children, Tom Rose, Kevin McGinnis, Theresa Wagner and Susan McGinnis Budelis; grandchildren, Anthony and James Thomas Rose, Aaron and Celia McGinnis, Erik Gray and Brooks Budelis; three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 13th, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Thomas Dunavan as the presiding priest.  Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

A Parish Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Friday, May 12th at the Dorr and Clark Funeral Home, Falls City. The family will receive friends following the rosary at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Judith Ann Herbster of Falls City, Nebraska, passed away May 2, 2017 in Falls City. She was born April 2, 1955 in WaKeeney, Kansas to Robert E. Wagg and Doris A. (Armbruster Wagg) Peterson. Judy spent her childhood in Ogallah, Kansas.

Judy loved children, and was a daycare provider upon her 1973 graduation from Trego Community High School in Wakeeney, Kansas until she became a Conklin Company distributor in 1979. Little did she know, her decision to join Conklin would change her life forever.

Meeting her husband, Charles W. Herbster, through the company she already loved, on June 26, 1982, they were married at Christview Christian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

To say Judy was passionate about Conkin was an understatement. She was a champion of the business and paved the way for women in the company.  Judy was the first woman President’s Club member in 1980; the first female Director in 1982; the first Conklin Director to develop 5 directors in one year; and the first lady to receive the “Director of the Year” Award in 1985. A role model for many, Judy became the first and only woman president of the Conklin company in its 48-year history. Seeing the potential in the corporation, Charles W. Herbster and Judy purchased the company in 1992. Soon after, she was appointed as President and Chief Operating Officer and served as such until her passing.

In addition to her involvement with Conklin, she worked hand in hand with Charles at their companies:  Herbster Angus Farms, Inc. and Carico Farms, Inc., Falls City, Nebraska. All three operations are rooted deeply in agriculture, and Judy was dedicated and instrumental to their unparalleled success.

Judy said recently, “Live everyday with no regrets.” She put her heart into everything including cooking meals for the farm family, inspiring corporate excellence and caring for those in need. Judy was a dear friend and uplifting mentor who demanded perfection, pushed for greatness and jubilantly celebrated success. Judy’s legacy of hard-work, desire to serve and devotion to excellence will remain in the lives of every person she met. From her humble youth in WaKeeney to becoming the President and Chief Operating Officer of nearly a 100 million dollar company, she lived the American Dream!

Judy was a member of Bible Baptist Church at Lincoln, Nebraska and the American Angus Association.

Judy is survived by her husband, Charles W. Herbster of Falls City, parents, Robert E. Wagg of Falls City and Doris A. Peterson of Platte City, MO, a brother, Duane Wagg of Platte City, sisters, Sandy Schaben and her husband Jim of Columbus, NE, Anna Cooper and her husband Mark of Platte City, MO, Sherri Willgohs and her husband Dan of Liberty, MO, and 7 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister in infancy, Jeanne.

Juanita Opal Pierce, 86, of Topeka, KS passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at her home. She was born December 3, 1930 in Soldier, KS the daughter of Spencer and Edna (Dunn) Chrisman.

Juanita graduated from Soldier High School in 1949. She had lived in Topeka since 2007, Abilene, TX for 50 years, Germany for 3 years and California for a year. Juanita was a housewife and homemaker.

Juanita married David Lee Pierce on August 3, 1955 in Topeka, KS; he preceded her in death on December 10, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Lee Pierce in 2007; a sister, Mary Nott in 2006 and 2 brothers, Clifford Chrisman in 1988 and an infant brother, Kenneth Chrisman and a brother-in-law, Claude Nott in 2001.

Survivors include 3 grandchildren, Lee Pierce, Kimberly R. Pierce and David A. Pierce all Texas; 5 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jean Chrisman Rutz of Holton, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Billy Joe Peters, 83, formerly of the Severance area,  passed away on May 6, 2017 at LaVerna Village Nursing Home in Savannah, MO.

He was a long time resident of St Joseph, MO. Billy was born August 16, 1933 to John Arthur and Blanche Rosalie (Ptomey) Peters in St Joseph, MO. He was a member Methodist Church, Severance, KS.

He graduated from Highland High School in 1952.  

Bill worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a line foreman, Swift and Company in St Joseph MO as a meat processor, and Borax where he traveled across the US spraying railways. He retired from Quaker Oats in 1995 after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Quaker Oats Quarter Century Club.

In 1981, Bill and Bernita “Benny” Merritt married; together with Bill’s eight children and Benny’s six, made a family of 14.  

Bill’s life was filled with numerous hobbies and pastimes. He enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, and trapping. He loved to play cards with friends and family and could be found at the local casinos playing his favorite slot machine. His true love was spending time with family and sharing stories from times past.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Blanche Peters, wife Benita, three daughters Diana Peters, Diana Lindsey, Michelle Walts, five grandsons Tim Davis, Jason Mills, Kyle Peters, Daniel Fattig, Jeremy Lindsey.

Hiawatha, KS……….Wilbur L. Dean, 94, of Hiawatha, died Thursday evening, May 4, 2017, at Falls City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he had been a resident a few days.

Wilbur was born at Sabetha, Kansas, April 14, 1923, one of three children born to Clarence Leslie and Lillian Barnes Dean and attended Washington High School near Kansas City before serving with the U.S. Navy from 1941 until 1947, during which time he served during World War II. He moved to South Dakota to live and work a few years prior to working for the 3M Company where he spent most of his working life before retiring. Wilbur moved to the Hiawatha area in the late 1980’s to be near family.

Wilbur made the statement he was Lutheran. He loved to read J.D. Robb books.

Survivors include a brother Orville Dean of Falls City, NE; a sister Pauline Constant near Denver, CO; several nieces and nephews including Debbie Holloway, Terry Dean, both of Falls City, and Jerry Dean of St. Joseph, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Leland.

Cremation is planned with services planned for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard. Private family inurnment will be a Hamlin Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends a half hour prior to services.

Karen Lynn Edwards, 57, of Effingham, KS died on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at her apartment.

Karen was born on Nov. 25, 1959 in Denver, CO the daughter of Earl and Florence (Wessel) Edwards, Sr. She graduated from Alameda High School, Lakewood, CO and attended two years of college. Karen moved from Denver, Co in 1991 and worked as a secretary for the Kansas Hospital Association, Topeka. She was a member of St. Ann’s Church, Effingham, KS, enjoyed reading, and was a cat lover.

Survivors include three brothers, Terry Edwards, Topeka, KS, Douglas Edwards, Lancaster, CA, and Earl Edwards, Jr., Effingham, KS, aunts, uncles and four nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

Elmer Menninga, 88 passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at his home in Summerfield, Kansas. He was born on December 6, 1928 at his parents home east of Bookwalter and later moved to a farmhouse south of Bookwalter.

Elmer spent his early years of school attending a country school in Bookwalter, finishing his schooling in Barneston, Nebraska.

Elmer married Sandra Colson on August 23, 1967 at the Lutheran Church in Summerfield, Kansas.  Elmer and Sandra moved into their home in Summerfield where they spent their entire married life.

Elmer farmed with his nephew, George Weirs, in the Bookwalter area until 1983.   He also drove a school bus for 48 years for Barneston, Summerfield and Axtell schools.  Upon retiring, he continued working part time transporting residents for Twin Valley in Beattie, Kansas.

Elmer enjoyed his time driving a school bus and loved interacting with the school kids.  He was also well known for his annual Christmas light display.  His family was his ultimate joy and his face would light up whenever he got to see his grandchildren.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace Menninga, his brothers, Albert Menninga and Casper Menninga, his sisters, Emma Dewey, Irene Roberts, Henrietta Weirs and Marie Clark.

Wathena, Kansas - Kenneth M. Wollnick, 73, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Friday, April 28. 2017 at the Mosaic Life Care of St. Joseph, Missouri. 

Kenneth was born on September 22, 1943 in to Paul A. & Freda G. (Scholz) Wollnick. 

Kenneth served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Wathena High School & Missouri Western College & worked as an I. T. Specialist for 37 years at the Heartland Hospital of St. Joseph, Missouri. Kenneth was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus & the American Legion Post #161 all of Wathena. 

He was preceded in death by his parents & brother-in-law, Charles Brosi.

Joseph “Joe” Eugene “Pok-to” Wahweotten, 55, of Mayetta, KS passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in Mayetta. He was born February 28, 1962 in Holton, KS the son of Vernon L. and Rosemary (Masquat) Wahweotten.

Joe graduated from Royal Valley High School in 1980. He worked for many years installing dry wall for Gary Heath Drywall in Lawrence. Joe had worked the last few years for Nelson Liquor Store in Mayetta. He was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

Joe married Mary Jo Albright, they divorced. He married Karen M. Wilks, they divorced.

Survivors include his father, Vernon Wahweotten of Holton, KS; 3 children, Virginia “Ginny” Wahweotten of Ottawa, KS, Matthew Eugene Wahweotten of Ottawa, KS and Shelby Lynn Wahweotten of Lawrence, KS; 3 step-children, Joshua Ryan Wilks of Lawrence, KS, Jessica Renee Haskell of Lawrence, KS and Kristin Nicole Haskell of Mayetta, KS; 4 sisters, Verna Wahweotten of Holton, KS, Barbara Evans of Mayetta, KS, Lisa Wahweotten of Topeka, KS and Denise Wahweotten of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Alan Wahweotten of Mayetta, KS and 7 grandchildren.

Alma Marie Higgins, 99, Highland, died May 1, 2017, at Highland Healthcare Center.

Alma was born April 19, 1918, in Highland, KS, to Harry Brunner  Bingman and Della Mae (Heikes) Bingman.  She was a graduate of Highland High School and Highland
Junior College.  She taught second grade for a brief time before becoming a full time
homemaker.

She married Murl Leslie Higgins on January 14, 1951.  He preceded her in death March 8, 2014.

Alma was stricken with polio at the age of nine and spent the rest of her life
more than overcoming the weakness in her legs.  She was a lifetime member of the
Highland United Methodist Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary for many years.  She also held a lifetime membership in the Highland Community College Alumni Association.

Survivors include two sons:  Mike (Barbara Ann) Higgins, Atchison, Jerry (Connie)
Higgins, Wathena, one grandchild, two great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren and four step great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Harry Wilburn

Gloria Meerpohl, 65, of Holton, died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.
 
She was born September 3, 1951 at Horton, the daughter of Greg and Evelyn Jeannotte Ramirez.  She graduated from Horton High School in 1969.  She attended Washburn University for a short time and cosmetology school in Kansas City.
 
Gloria worked for the Holton School system, first as a teacher's aide for about five years, and then as a technology assistant for twenty years, retiring in December of 2015.
 
She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton, the Altar Society at the church and the Holton Community Hospital Auxiliary.
 
She married Mike Meerpohl on January 7, 1972 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton.  He survives, of the home.
 
Gloria was preceded in death by her mother.
 
Other survivors include two sons, Brian Meerpohl (Niki), Holton, and Kelly Meerpohl, Topeka; a daughter, Jenny Lancaster (Zach), Holton; her father, Greg Ramirez; three brothers, Lawrence Ramirez (Leigh), Independence, MO, Steve Ramirez (Carla), Lawrence, and Vincent Ramirez (Stefanie), Casa Grande, AZ; four sisters, Patty Battese (Mitch), Lawrence, Barbara Tucker (Jim), Baldwin City, and Mona Cortez (Chris) and Marlise Wilson (Kenny), all of Horton; and eight grandchildren, Ashtin, Carson and Carter Meerpohl, Daryl and Alex Meerpohl, and Dominic, Bennett and Amelia Lancaster.

Bill was born October 6, 1931 in Auburn, New York the son of William Charles and Helen DeVinney Carter. He attended elementary schools in New York, graduating from Union Springs High School, Union Springs, New York. He then attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City, Missouri.

He and Glenda Neitzel were united in marriage on June 26, 1982 in Independence, Missouri.

Bill began his employment in New York as a traffic manager with the agri-milling industry and transferred to Kansas City, Missouri in 1960. He then moved to Atchison, Kansas in 1979 and was employed as a traffic manager for Lincoln Grain Elevator and later with Midwest Grain Products as traffic manager for eleven years until his retirement in 1995. He became an Interstate Commerce Commission practitioner in 1962.

He served with the United States Army from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953.

He was a member of the Masonic Order in New York, the Kansas City Traffic and Transportation Club of Kansas City and was an active participant with the Gladstone, Missouri planning commission.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Carter, of the couple’s home in Atchison, KS; a son, Barry Hume Carter, Excelsior Springs, MO; a daughter, Kate Carter Meek, Fr. Worth, TX; a brother, David Carter, Auburn, NY; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Courtney Nicolle Bowman Carter in 1984; two brothers, Charles Carter in 1998 and Douglass Carter in 2015.

Frances Naomi Harris, 81 years old, of Leavenworth, Kansas passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017 at her home with loving family by her side.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Independence Baptist Church, 601 Pottawatomie St., Leavenworth, KS 66048 with Rev. Dr. James F. Lambert, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison, Kansas. Visitation with the family will be Saturday, from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church. Naomi was born on January 12, 1936 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Daniel and Agnes Miller Jackson. She attended Lincoln School and Atchison High School. She later studied in Business Administration.

She and Oscar Harris were united in marriage in Oklahoma. He preceded her in death.

Naomi worked at the Atchison Youth Center in Atchison before moving to Kansas City in 1985. She was a school bus driver in Kansas City, Missouri for thirteen years. She was active in politics and appreciated President Obama.

She enjoyed playing bingo, putting together puzzles and anything associated with education. She was a sports fan and stayed loyal to her local Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. She loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Gwendolyne K. Davis, Leavenworth, KS, four sons, Dennis Harris, Texas, David Harris, Aurora, CO, Oscar Harris, Jr., K.C., MO, Scott (Joyce) Harris, K.C., MO, twenty grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Daniel Jackson Jr., Eugene Jackson, Warren Jackson, Carolyn Allen, Dorothy Whitely, Ruth Anna Williams, Wealthy Fobbs, Hortense Wilkerson, Carl R. Jackson and Florence Harper.

Ellen Dolores ‘DeDe’ (Brown) Fogler, 96, of St. Joseph, MO, formerly of Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017.

Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS . Private family inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph, MO. DeDe was born February 3, 1921 in Helena, Missouri, the daughter of Loren E. and Vera (Hoffmann) Brown. De De was educated in Iowa and Missouri and graduated from Weston (MO) High School in 1938. She graduated from a secretarial school in Kansas City, Missouri, and worked as a secretary before her marriage to Frank A. Fogler on November 24, 1943 in Weston. They moved to Atchison in 1946 where they owned Fogler Studio of Photography from 1946 to 1984. DeDe was a member of the First Baptist Church of Atchison, Baptist Women’s Circle and she sang in the church choir for many years. She was also a member of the Family, Community and Education Association; Atchison Historical Society; Friends of the Atchison Library. DeDe a member of the’ Ukulele Ladies Trio’ enjoyed playing the ukulele and volunteered her music at nursing homes and different activities. She is a life member of the Kansas Professional Photography Association. DeDe especially loved her home, family and granddaughter, Mary.

Her husband, Frank, preceded DeDe in death on February 27, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert E. Fogler on March 21, 2017; and a sister, Alice Benner.

Survivors include her daughter in law, Judy Fogler, St. Joseph, MO; a granddaughter, Mary (Chris) Brinton , St. Joseph, MO; great-grandchildren, Andrew, McKinley and Cade Brinton; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Robert G. “Bob” Noll, 84 of Pawnee City, peacefully passed into Eternal Life on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at The Pawnee County Hospital.  He was born on July 1, 1932 in Seneca, Kansas to Robert Maurice and Jessie Marie (Hatfield) Noll.

Bob graduated from Deming New Mexico High School (fait Robert G. “Bob” Noll, 84 of Pawnee City peacefully passed into Eternal Life on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at The Pawnee County Hospital.  He was born on July 1, 1932 in Seneca, Kansas to Robert Maurice and Jessie Marie (Hatfield) Noll.

Bob graduated from Deming New Mexico High School (faithful class of 1951) and WNM University, Silver City, New Mexico.  He retired from the US Army in 1983 and after moving to Pawnee City, he drove a school bus.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and first wife, Rosemarie.
Bob is survived by his wife Rita, sons, Perry(Dale), Robert (Charlotte), Charlie (Sheila) all of Missouri, Mark (Anne) of California, many grand and great grandchildren, devoted family and friends.

Bob requested no visitation and that his remains be donated to Creighton (Omaha) Anatomical School of Medicine. A celebration of Bob’s life and inurnment will be at a later date.
