Erik Ernest (Ernie) Hoppe 84, passed away May 27,2018 at his home with family around him. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Anna Hoppe, sister Helen Johnstone and brother Lou Hoppe.

Survivors include his wife, Jane , two sons Darryl (Helen) and family, Darwin and his family,sisters Betty Spiker of Topeka and  Mildred Hines of Emory Tx. Nieces, nephews and many friends.

As per Ernie's wishes, cremation had taken place. A Celebration of Life service will take place at a later date.

Ernie had a talent for rebuilding engines and restoring old cars that started when he was young. He loved old Model A fords and owned several old cars. He had hands on alot of different kinds of cars. willing to  help anyone get going. He worked at MidAm Dairy from 18 till retirement. He spent much time with his sons helping them in their automotive careers.

Dale Henry Mellies, 84, of Holton, KS passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Medicalodge Jackson County. He was born May 24, 1934 in Morganville, KS, the son of John Carl and Nettie (Liby) Mellies.

          Dale graduated from Holton High School. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserve for 12 years and was a former member of the Rolling W in Holton.

          Dale sold and shipped produce for Gamble Robinson in Topeka, was a farmer in Circleville, worked for Quality Oil and was a road grader for Jackson County. Dale later retired from KPL as a meter reader.

          He married Bette A. Frost on December 4, 1954 in Hill City, KS. She preceded him in death on January 9, 1993. He was also preceded in death by 2 daughters, Brenda Twombly in 1999 and Sue Claycamp in 2006; a son, Larry Mellies in 2003; 2 great-grandchildren, Emma Plankinton and Justin Foote, Jr; 2 sisters, Delyte Moran and Mandy Lee Clark and 2 brothers, Ralph and Lee Mellies.

          Survivors include a daughter, Karen Savage of Mayetta, KS; a sister, Donna Welborn; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

          Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2018 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in the Circleville Cemetery. DOVEL, Todd E.
10/10/1966 – 5/29/2018

Todd was born October 10, 1966 in Falls City, Nebraska to Ed and Linda Dovel. He attended schools in Murdock, Louisville, Falls City and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1984. Upon graduating, Todd joined the US Marine Corps, specializing in electronics, and served for four years until 1988. He continued to work in the electronics maintenance fields, most recently as a maintenance technician with the US Postal Service.

Todd’s family meant the world to him. In 2006, Todd was married to Kimberlee Prettyman.  Todd and Kim’s children include Brett, Dalton and Cheyenne Dovel and Jacob and Joshua Palmer. In recent years, Todd loved spending time with the latest additions, grandsons Damian and Lucas. In addition, Todd loved his cats.

Besides his family, Todd had a passion for cars inherited from his father, namely Corvettes. He enjoyed restoring and showing them at car shows.

JoAnn Esther Pantle Engroff, 84, Topeka, died Monday, May 28, 2018, at FW Huston Medical Center at Winchester.

She was born June 19, 1933, at Atchison, the daughter of David Benjamin and Flora Ethel See Pantle. She graduated from Nortonville High School in 1952.

JoAnn retired from working at the office of National Reserve Life Insurance Co. in Topeka, after many years of service.

She married Clarence Engroff, March 2, 1973, at Topeka. He died April 14, 1987. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, James (her twin brother), William and David Pantle; and two sisters, Mary Edwards and Florence Barnes.

Survivors include a brother, John Pantle, St. Joseph, MO; a sister, Virginia (Dale) Rogers, Citrus Heights, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

JoAnn was an avid pet lover and raised many dogs throughout her life.

A Memorial Graveside Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Topeka.

Burna J. Broady, age 76 of Johnson, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Bryan East Medical Center in Lincoln.

Survivors include her husband Terry of Johnson; son Jeff Broady and his wife Lori of Johnson; daughter Ricky Carbajal and special friend Chris Nelson of Brock; grandchildren Danielle (Bryce) Niss; Jordan Broady; Natasha (Michael) Lollmann; Michelle Broady; Nicole Carbajal; Emerson Carbajal; Payton Nelson; great-grandchildren Weston, Reid, and LilaBelle Niss; Cami Jean Lollmann; brothers Lonnie (Leigh) Bruggemann of Humboldt; Sid (Carol) Bruggemann of St. Libory, NE; sister Kate Wileman of Fort Wayne, IN; brother-in-law Roger (Edith) Broady of Auburn; many other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be Saturday, June 2, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Johnson. Burna’s body will be cremated following the service, and burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Johnson Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Auburn Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.

Janice Rae Mahaney Lassek was reunited with her beloved parents Patrick and Alice Mahaney and other family members when she passed on to eternal life on May 28, 2018. She was born in 1948 at the Picotte Memorial Hospital in Walthill, NE. After graduation from Walthill High School in 1967, Janice attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center acquiring a B.S. in Medical Technology in 1973. She worked as a medical technologist at Immanuel Hospital and as an Assistant Supervisor at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, NE. Janice continued her education at the Medical Center in additional classes throughout the 1980's. 

Janice's dream was to become a medical doctor, which she accomplished upon graduation in 1994 from the Nebraska College of Medicine. She completed her internship in Connecticut in 1995 and her residency in Ohio in 1998. Dr. Lassek was awarded a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. Thereafter, she was qualified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal and Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Lassek's professional career grew as she enjoyed the locations of Ladysmith and Milwaukee, WI as well as Springfield and Wheatland, MO. Dr. Lassek was licensed in WA, WI and MO.

Dr. Lassek was enthusiastic about and dedicated to quality patient care. Her extensive knowledge base in several fields provided material for many professional internal and geriatric medicine presentations on topics such as Diabetes, Parkinsons and Dementia at conferences. Dr. Lassek's scholarly and consultant activities showed her to be a diligent, detail-orientated and thorough researcher. Dr. Lassek is remembered as a comprehensive patient care provider and a woman of great motivation and strength. Her ambitions and insightful personality carried her through many challenges and created memories of wonderful adventures. 

Her greatest loves were her children and grandchildren and always winning at Pitch and Kings Corners card games with her family and friends. She met life head-on and never looked back except to inspire others to follow. Perseverance over all was her motto. Let the doves carry you homeward with grace in freedom from the struggles of earthly life.

Charles Calvin Foster (formerly of Washington, KS) died Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the age of 97 at Mustang Creek Estates, Sachse, TX.

He was born in Trenton, MO to James Foster and Mary Hawk on November 23, 1920. He was one of eight children and grew up on a farm in Effingham, KS during the Depression. He graduated from Atchison Co. Community High School in 1939 and then went to Parsons Junior College in Kansas where he played football for 2 years. After junior college, he joined the Navy during WWII and was on a light cruiser sent to the South Pacific Theater of the war. His ship was in the battles of Guadalcanal, Okinawa, the Mariana Islands, the Philippines, and finally Japan. On a 15-day leave, he came home and married Evelyn Anna Gigstad on December 30, 1944 and then returned to the ship. He was discharged in October of 1945.

After his discharge he attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1948. Charlie worked for the Soil Conservationist Service for his whole career except for taking over his dad’s farm for 7 years. He and Evelyn lived in many places (Osborne, Washington, Monrovia, Oskaloosa, all in Kansas) but moved back to Washington in 1961 where he lived until 2016 when he moved to Texas to be closer to his children.

Charlie was very involved in community activities: Boy Scout leader, Lions Club (for 50 years), and the Methodist Church. He loved gardening, woodworking, and especially golf which he took up in retirement and accomplished a hole in one. Charlie was an avid Kansas State fan and loved watching the games on TV. He also attended all his children’s activities (music and sports) while they were at Washington High School.

Charles was preceded in his death by his wife Evelyn and one grandson. He is survived by his children: Greg (Mary Ann) Foster of Centennial, CO; Carol (Gary) Gray, Sachse, TX; Alan (Cathy) Foster of Blue Springs, MO; Tom (Susan) Foster of Dallas, TX; and Richard Foster of Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and his brother Raymond Foster of Horton, KS.

Charlie’s ashes will be buried alongside his wife at the Effingham KS cemetery after a service at The Union Church, Effingham, KS on June 2 at 10:30 am. Memorials may be made to the First United Church of Washington, KS in honor of Charles Foster.

Maxine Violet (Meyer) Brockhoff went to meet her Savior early May 29, 2018 at Hiawatha Community Hospital after a brief illness. A kind, strong and independent 90-year-old, she lived until her death on the family farm she loved, even mowing her grass a few days before entering the hospital.

Maxine was born July 9, 1927 near Girard, Kansas to Rudolph and Anna (Miller) Meyer and graduated from Girard High School in 1945. She worked for the Kansas Employment Secretary Division and then later as a secretary at McClure, Webb & Oman, a law firm in Topeka, Kansas. A devout Lutheran her whole life, she attended St. John’s Lutheran Church while in Topeka. Maxine was also active in Walther League, a Lutheran young adults group, where she became a state officer and met her future husband, Stephen Brockhoff of Fairview, Kansas.

Steve and Maxine were married in Topeka on April 21, 1957 and then moved near Steve’s birthplace between Hiawatha and Fairview where they farmed and raised four sons. Maxine, who was always known a great cook and an exceptional pie-maker, ran the Powhattan Café in Powhattan, Kansas seven days a week from 1985 to 1995. She continued catering local events even after leaving the Café.

Maxine was active at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fairview, Kansas and served in a number of church and community roles including LWML, Dorcas Society, 4-H and others. Maxine in her later years became a prolific quilter who donated more than one hundred quilts annually to charities including Lutheran World Relief and the Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry in Kansas City, Missouri and others. She wore out multiple sewing machines making them, almost always using donated fabric, and thousands of people as near as Brown County and as far away as Africa have found warmth on a cold night under a quilt that she made.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Steve, on August 4, 2008; her brothers Milbourn, Clarence, Aldine, Irwin and Wallace and her sister, Edna. Survivors include her four sons: Kevin and wife Karen of Dallas, Texas; Gary and wife Debra of Peachtree City, Georgia; Jeffrey and wife Leslie of Powhatan, Kansas; and Wallace and wife Anne of Linwood, Kansas. Maxine is also survived by her grandchildren (Zackery, Erika, Johanna, Evan, Marie, Eliza and Lucien), step-grandchildren Joshua Hayes, Zachary Shipman and Sydney Smith, and many other relatives, friends and neighbors with whom she maintained regular correspondence and connections.

Paul E. Rockey, 63, of Hiawatha died Saturday morning, May 26, 2018 surrounded by his family.  

Paul was born January 15, 1955 in Hiawatha to Wilbert and Barbara Rockey.  Paul grew up in Hiawatha and graduated from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1973.  Paul also attended Highland Community College.  Paul married Nancy Anderson on May 25, 1974 and were blessed with two sons.  The couple recently celebrated their 44 year anniversary.  

Paul, along with his bother Phil, and father co-founded Rockey Manufacturing Company.  Paul was currently employed with RHS/Best Way Inc. for over 30 years.  Paul was very active in his community. He was President of the Hiawatha Sons of American Legion Squadron Post 66, ran the Hiawatha baseball program, coached and managed American Legion Baseball for over 25 years, constructed and was groundskeeper for Noble Baseball Park, and established a local Major League Wiffleball organization.

Survivors include his wife Nancy; two sons: Brady (Michelle) of Shawnee, Kansas and Bryan (Mandy) of Hiawatha; 5 grand-children: Alex, Ashton, Payton, Pauly, and Sydney; brother Phil (Jacqueline) of Hiawatha; sisters Irena Lyon and Ruth (Tommy) Black, both of Hiawatha and Christina (Dale) Buckingham of Warrensburg, MO; father-in-law Luther Anderson and sister-in-law Connie King both of Hiawatha.  Other survivors include his traveling friends: Dave and Linda Grimm, Rick and Cathy Duncan, Dominic and Linda Grier, Chris and Tami Lehmkuhl.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth “Butch” Rockey.

Funeral Services are planned for 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, Hiawatha   Chaplin Tim Champ will officiate.  Interment will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, KS.

 Lyle W. Campbell, 78, of Holton, died Saturday, May 26, 2018 at his home.

He was born February 6, 1940 at Woodlawn, KS, the son of Emery and Mae Bentley Campbell. He graduated from Sabetha High School in 1959. Lyle had worked for the telephone company in Hiawatha and Holton for a total of forty-three years. He started as a lineman and retired as a network technician.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Emery Lee Campbell and Wilbur Campbell.

Survivors include three sons, Allen Campbell (Kathy), Topeka, and Richard Campbell and Wesley Campbell (Jodie), all of Holton; a daughter, Sandra Silver, Holton; two brothers, Donald Campbell (Nancy), St. Joseph, MO and Ramon Campbell, in Colorado; three sisters, Hazel Sibold, Sabetha, Wilma Leuthold, Lawrence, and Melba King (Roy), Atchison; a sister-in-law, Darlene Campbell, Sabetha, ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 30th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in the Holton Cemetery. Lyle will lie in state at the funeral home where family and friends will meet from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Jeraldine “Jeri” Lynn Lindstrom, 65, Atchison, Kansas, died Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at the Atchison Hospital.

A visitation will be on Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the services with interment at a later date. Jeraldine was born March 1, 1953, in Wenatchee, Washington, the daughter of Max and Dorothy (Finley) Allen. She attended school in Washington State.

She and Marvin E. Lindstrom were married and later divorced. 

Jeraldine was a member of the Christian Faith, having attended New Life Assembly of God Church in Atchison, KS.

Survivors include, her two sons, Christopher Lindstrom, Edgar Springs, MO, Aaron Lindstrom, Atchison, KS, a brother, , John Allen, Wenatchee, WA, and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Allen, Wenatchee, WA

Beth Sherlock, 91, Atchison, Kansas died Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Vintage Park in Atchison.

Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant.  Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Maryville, Missouri. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 A.M. until 10:00 A.M. at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedict Parish or American Cancer Society and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with whom the final arrangements have been entrusted.

Beth was born July 10, 1926, in Burlington Junction, Missouri, the daughter of George and Verda (Garrett) Myers. She attended Horace Mann High School.

She and Norman Sherlock were united in marriage June 4, 1951, at St. Patrick’s Church, Maryville, Missouri. Mr. Sherlock preceded her in death on May 31, 2013.

Prior to marriage Beth worked as a hospital lab tech. When she married she became a homemaker, and enjoyed volunteering at hospitals in her free time. She was a member of St. Benedict Parish participating at St. Joseph’s Church.

Beth was a great artist and enjoyed painting with water colors. She enjoyed quilting, reading, and traveling with her family.  

Survivors include a son Gerry Sherlock, Leavenworth, KS a daughter, Judy (Jeff) Penny, Lyons, KS, two grandchildren, Angie (Mark) Pahls, Adam Penny and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Savage.

James Arthur Hill, 78, of Atchison, KS died on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the Atchison Hospital.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Leavenworth National Cemetery with Fr. Meinrad Miller officiating. No Visitation will be held. James was born on April 15, 1940 in Bemidji, MN the son of John and Ardell (Nelson) Hill. Mr. Hill is a retired U.S. Army veteran earning a Purple Heart during his two tours in Vietnam. He served as a Military Police Officer, Police Officer in Lansing, KS, and Security at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Leavenworth. Mr. Hill was a lifetime VFW member in Grand Rapids, MN and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, quilting and family time.

He was married to Judith L. Jetland on Jan 8, 1970. She preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 2008. His parents, brothers Jack and Tim Hill and sister Becky Brown also preceded him in death. Survivors include his sons, Mark (Christine) Hill, Isanti, MN and James H. “Scooter” (Sarah) Hill, Atchison, KS, his daughters, Mitzi (Todd) Mielke, Marysville, WA and Monica Hill, St. Francis, MN, a sister Terri Saleture, Grand Rapids, MN, Grandchildren , Sara, Maddi, Ian, Ryan, Randi, Rae Anna, Isaiah, Benjamin, Dylan, Molly and Emma, Great Grandchildren, Henry, Logan and Evelyn.

Charles Robert Howard, age 68, of rural Hiawatha, died from cancer May 23, 2018 at home surrounded by family.

He was born in Horton, Kansas on June 6, 1950, the son of Harold Eugene (Gene) and Virginia (Rose) Rockey Howard. Charles graduated from Hiawatha High School class of 1968. He then attended Vo-Tech in Pittsburg, Kansas. He met and married Betty Oke there in 1969.

Charles is preceded in death by the love of his life Betty, in 2013.

Together the two raised three children; Charla (Nicholas) Adcock, Hollis (Amy) Howard, and Keri (Richard A.) Bestwick., who survive.

Charles and Betty were married 45 years and were grandparents of an equal amount of boys and girls. Kelsey Adcock, Logan Adcock, Rhianna Howard, Charlie Bestwick, Morgan Howard, Andrew Bestwick, Dana Howard, and Brendon Bestwick. In addition Charles is also survived by his brother Gary (Kathy) Howard, his parents Gene and Rose, and numerous nieces, and nephews.

Charles enlisted in the US Army in August 1970 He served in Vietnam with the 101st airborne from February 1971 to January 1972. Once home Charles remained in continued service to his country by serving in the National Guard for nearly eighteen years. At one time he was an instructor of mechanics for RTSM in Salina, Kansas. He also worked for Brown County building bridges and as an auto mechanic in various businesses. He was a member of a black powder club, the Mason Lodge, and a volunteer fireman. He loved the outdoors and was an excellent fisherman.

In addition to Betty, Charles is preceded in death by his brother Donny Howard, sister-in-law Teri Howard, his grandparents, and an infant great niece. He will be missed greatly as he was a father, grandpa, brother, friend and all around kind person.

Memorial services are planned for Tuesday May 29th, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery Hiawatha.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to services.

Edna Etta (Argo) Brock, 87, of Holton, KS passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at The Pines in Holton. She was born January 6, 1931 in Delia, KS the daughter of Ernest Earl and Etta Belle (Scheidegger) Argo.

Edna attended rural schools at Neive and Drake. She graduated from Holton High School in 1949. Edna worked for Jackson County for 31 years, 20 of which she served as the County Clerk. She served as president of the Kansas County Clerks Association in 1981. She also worked at Holton Middle School for 7 years. Edna was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Edna married Robert L. Brock on August 4, 1956 in Topeka, KS. He preceded her in death on November 13, 2011; celebrating over 55 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Clinton “Bud” Argo; 3 sisters, Pauline Hurla, Adeline Cunningham and Marzine Little.

Daniel Lee McGinnis, 68, of Topeka, KS passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 21, 2018 at his home. He was born August 23, 1949 in Manhattan, KS, the son of Dale M. and Lenita E. (Arnold) McGinnis.

Dan graduated from Pratt High School in 1967 and attended Pratt Junior College. He proudly served in the Army National Guard. Dan was a salesman for Hummert International; selling greenhouses across the state of Kansas for over 22 years.

He was a former member of DeMolay International and enjoyed volunteering for many years with the Kansas State University Horticulture Department, sharing his passion for gardening.

Dan married Barbara Ellen Baxter on July 4, 1970 in Soldier, KS. They shared over 47 years of marriage. Barbara survives of the home. Other survivors include 2 daughters, Brandi Wells (Richard) of Topeka, KS and Heather Morrow of Orlando, FL; 2 sisters, Leah Cole (Tim) of Edmond, OK and Linda Woodruff (Warren) of Topeka, KS; 2 brothers, Doug McGinnis (Connie) of Broken Arrow, OK and Don McGinnis (Jean) of Topeka, KS and 5 grandchildren, Trinity, Ainsley, Cooper, Delaney and Arik. He was a proud uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.  His love of family extended to friends who became family.

Clarissa Marie Kerl, 88, formerly of Beatrice, Nebraska passed away on Friday, May 18, 2018, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska. 

Clarissa Marie (Cameron) Kerl was born to Glenn and Selma (Yonkey) Cameron on July 22, 1929 at Summerfield, Kansas.  She attended country school near Summerfield and graduated from Summerfield High School in 1947. 

She was united in marriage to Charles Henry Kerl on February 22, 1949 at the Mission Creek Presbyterian Church. To this union four children were born.

Marie and Henry lived in Beatrice most of their married life where they raised their family.  She was a homemaker and loving mother to her daughter and three sons.  Marie was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Beatrice and Presbyterian Women’s Group for over 40 years and had also served as a member of session.  She enjoyed singing with several different groups in the church and Senior Center.  Marie was a loyal and devoted daughter, sister, wife and partner in marriage, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. 

Marie is survived by her husband Henry of Humboldt, sons, Jerry Kerl and wife Ann of Florida, Tim Kerl and partner Angela Walswick of Minnesota and Brian Kerl of Omaha, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, brother, Larry Cameron and wife Sharon of Summerfield, KS and sister-in-law, Jackie Cameron of Summerfield, KS, nieces and nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy (Kerl) Howell and husband Harris, infant brother and brother, James David “J.D” Cameron.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2018 at the Mission Creek Presbyterian Church, rural Liberty, Nebraska, with Pastor Jim McNeal officiating.

Carol Jean (Hirsch) Brady, 72, of Topeka, died May 20, 2018 at St. Francis emergency room.

She was born in Sabetha, Kansas on October 31, 1945 the daughter of Alvin and Veda (Cavett) Hirsch.

Carol worked for Harmon’s Manufacturing in Wichita.

She was a former member of Powhattan United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star in Powhattan, and had attended Mater Dei Holy Name Parish.

Carol married Michael Brady on October 20, 1979 in Topeka.  He survives of the home.  Also surviving are her siblings; Bob (Barbara) Hirsch of Powhattan, Le Roy (Sylvia) Hirsch of Phoenix, Arizona, Larry (Bernita) Hirsch of Syracuse, Ks., and Rose (Gene) Odermatt of Topeka and sister-in-laws, Virginia Lee Hirsch of Lorton, VA and Mary Hirsch of Hiawatha and Mike’s brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Michelle Brady of Livermore, CA, and many nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Jim, Dennis and Fred Hirsch.

Viola Louise Wenger, 94, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Apostolic Christian Home.

Viola was born to Lewis and Lena (Strahm) Bahr December 3, 1923 in Sabetha, Kansas.  In her youth, Viola spent a lot of time outdoors.  She helped with milking the cows, feeding the pigs, putting up hay, and working in the garden.  Viola had a Shetland pony and buggy that she used to deliver water to the workers who came to help her father with the threshing.  Viola and her sister, Marie, also helped their mother in the house.  Viola attended school in Sabetha for all of her education, and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1942.  After high school, Viola worked at Duckwall’s Variety Store in Sabetha.  She then became a bookkeeper at the feed mill.

Viola married Melvin W. Wenger on June 11, 1944 in Sabetha, Kansas. They lived in Sabetha until 1973 when they moved to Mesa, Arizona, where they lived for thirty seven years. During these years in Mesa, Mel and Viola enjoyed golfing and spending time with friends and family.  After Mel passed away, Viola moved back to the Apostolic Christian West Village Apartments in 2010.  In 2016 she moved into the Apostolic Christian Home where she received unconditional love and care.  When asked what her advice is to the younger generation, she said, “Live each day to the fullest.”

She is preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Fanny (Aeschliman) Bahr; her husband, Melvin on July 4, 2010; her brothers, Willard and Clayton Bahr; her sister, Marie Hartter; and a grandson, Joseph Peake.

She is survived by her children, Patricia Circle (David) of Stilwell, KS, and Richard Wenger (Sue) of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Sheryl Renee Stremmel, 68, of Hoyt, KS passed away Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Stormont Vail Hospital. She was born November 25, 1949 in Macon, GA, the daughter of Forrest Dean and Elsie June Collins.

Sheryl graduated from Benson High School in Omaha, NE. She also graduated from Kaw Valley Vo-Tech with a LPN degree. Sheryl worked at numerous nursing homes for many years. She retired from Medicalodge Jackson County in 2016. Sheryl was a member of Lakeview Faith Chapel in Holton.

 She married Michael L. Stremmel; they later divorced.

Survivors include her step-father, Everett Campbell of Oroville, CA; 2 daughters, Michelle Scheidegger (Charlie) of Mayetta, KS and Lacretia Porubsky (Mark) of Topeka, KS; a sister, Larice Murphy of Carbondale, KS; 2 half-brothers, Jeff Dean and David Dean both of Missouri; 3 grandchildren, Ivy Porubsky, Michael Stremmel and Jonathan Stremmel and 3 great-grandchildren, Kaylin, Kaison and Rowan.

She was preceded in death by her father, Forrest Dean; her mother, E. June Campbell; 2 sisters, Lynna Kay Beagle and Candy Dean.

Gwendolyn I. (Leuthold) Stoller, 91, of Sabetha, KS passed away Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Apostolic Christian Home.

Gwendolyn was born February 2, 1927 in Oneida, Kansas to Joseph and Gladys (Huff) Leuthold. She was one of six children. Gwendolyn grew up in the Oneida area and completed Oneida High School. Soon after High School, she accepted a position with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for the next eight years.

In 1948, Gwendolyn met and married George Stoller. In 1963, she left the telephone company and went to work for Stoller Interiors. The Stollers retired from the business in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Gladys (Huff) Leuthold; her husband, George Stoller; one sister, Nelda Leuthold; and four brothers, John, Dale Harold and Kenneth Leuthold.

She is survived by two children, Brentton Stoller and wife Rori Stoller of Lenexa, Kansas, and Bethie Stoller and partner Holly Sakariason of Yuma, Arizona; granddaughter, Megan Stoller Wilson and Matt Wilson of Edmond, Oklahoma; and two grandsons, Samuel George Stoller-Sakariason and Max Ethan Stoller-Sakariason of Yuma, Arizona.

Paula Carol (McKay) Whitacre, 77, of Highland, Kansas, passed away Friday, May 18, 2018, in St. Joseph, MO.

Paula was born on March 1, 1941, in Troy, Kansas. She attended Highland schools, graduating from Highland High School in 1959.  She became a licensed beauty operator before attending college.  After graduating from Emporia State Teachers College, she taught elementary and junior high school for 39 ½ years, all but two years in the Highland USD 425 school district.  She retired in 2004. 

Paula was an active member of the Highland Christian Church. She married William (Bill) Whitacre on March 22, 1964, in Highland.  He preceded her in death in 1989.  Also preceding her in death are her parents, Jacob and Leona (Smith) McKay, and brothers, Michael McKay and Phillip (Bud) McKay. 

She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Larson, Salina, Kansas, and Deborah (Dale) Lukert, Clearwater, Kansas; three brothers, Jacob (Ida Lee) McKay, Lansing, KS, David (Carolyn) McKay, Woodstock, GA, and Timothy (Marcia) McKay, Shawnee Mission, KS; five grandchildren, Jordan (Kelcee) Lukert, Brett (Madison) Lukert, Tara Lukert, Melissa Larson, Brendan Larson, and one great-grandchild, Cullen Lukert.

Funeral services are planned for Tuesday, May 22, 2018, 10:30 a.m., at the Highland Christian Church, with Pastors Tom Carter and Terry Carlson officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery.

Lorene Olberding, 87, of Baileyville, died on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Life Care Center of Seneca.

Lorene was born at a farm south of Seneca on December 26, 1930, to Lawrence and Anna Weber Koelzer. She grew up in the Corning community and attended a country school, graduating from the 8th grade.

On September 13, 1956, she married Alvin R. Olberding at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning. The couple lived north of Baileyville for three years, and then in 1959, they moved into Baileyville.

Lorene stayed active, volunteering at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church cleaning and at the Catholic Region Center when it was located in Baileyville. She enjoyed playing bingo and visiting with family and friends. She was devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary and prayed the rosary daily.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the St. Ann’s Altar Society in Baileyville.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin on December 11, 2002; her daughter, Alice Payne on April 1, 2013; her parents, Lawrence and Anna; brothers, Sylvester Koelzer on June 15, 2015, George Koelzer on January 14,1950, Melvin Koelzer on January 1, 2001 and Andrew Koelzer on May 29, 1942; and sisters, Rita Eisenbarth on November 23, 2016, Clara Niehues on February 21, 1993, Dorothy Koelzer on December 15, 1948 and Margaret Koelzer on January 11, 1942.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Haverkamp of Seneca and Ann Broxterman of Silver Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 22nd at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be at 10 A.M. prior to Mass, at the church.

Carol was born December 25, 1941 in Horton, KS the daughter of William Clay and Elizabeth Pearl (Moore) Hundley.  She was a homemaker but in her later years worked as a Para and librarian for Atchison County Community High School. Carol also worked as a hairdresser for the O’Trimble Funeral Home. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and served on the Altar Society.  Carol was a member of the Busy Bee Club and was very involved with 4-H during and after her sons were active.  Her involvement included judging at the local and state county fairs.

Carol married Russell Eckert on July 29, 1961 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, he survives of the home.  Additional survivors include their sons; Brett and Jacki Eckert, Hutchinson, KS, Todd and Janet Eckert, Effingham, KS, Chad and Danielle Eckert, Spring Hill, KS, Kurt Eckert, Overland Park, KS, Russ Eckert, Park City, KS, brothers; Bill Hundley, Lawrence, KS, Sam Hundley, Rogersville, AR, Jerry Hundley, Lawrence, KS, Larry Hundley, Liberty, MO, sisters; Mildred Horlachler, Colby, KS, Shirley Nyhart, Leavenworth, KS, grandchildren; Clay, Russell, Rick, Copper, Keegan, Christian, Kody, Nathan, Madison, Conner, Lexie Eckert.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Jim Hundley.

Valerie Schuetz, 73, of Horton, Kansas, made her journey to Heaven on Friday, May 18, 2018.

Valerie was born on November 29, 1944 in Oxford, England, the daughter of Cecil and Frances Swadling Wright.

Valerie operated a day care center for over 30 years. She was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church, volunteered at the YMCA, Tri-County Manor and the Horton Thrift shop for years. Valerie enjoyed shopping, long walks, vacations and seeing her family back home in England. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and enjoyed watching them play sports.

On September 21, 1963 she married Michael Schuetz in Oxford, England.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Schuetz of the home, Horton, Kansas; son, Doug Schuetz of Topeka, Kansas; two grandchildren, Kelcey & Trista; three great grandchildren, Trenton, Phoenix and Bryleigh; two sisters, Carol (Bob) Perry and Sue (Paul) Skinner; two brothers, Jim (Barbara) Wright and Tony (Carol) Wright all of England.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Charles E. Perkins, Sr., 81, Omaha, Nebraska, died Wednesday, May 16, 2018.

Perkins was born March 2, 1937 in Atchison, Kansas. The son of Frank and Mae (Raferty) Perkins.  He graduated from Atchison High School in 1955.Charles was a loyal and dedicated union member of Boiler maker Local #83. Charles traveled to many states to help build and maintain many different power stations, oil refineries and water towers under the representation of Boilermaker Local #83.Charles was married and divorced to Gail Lee (Johnston) Perkins Blanc.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlene (Perkins) Sanders and Larry; Della (Perkins) Noll Kephart and Jay and one son Charles E. Perkins, Jr., and Becky.Grandchildren, Jason Skarboe, Mandy (Skarboe) Meister, Laci (Skarboe) Majorins, Rachel Noll, Sarah Perkins Nichols, Charles E. Perkins, III, Nicholas Perkins and 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Charles lived in many different cities and towns while working as a Boilermaker and after he retired, Charles loved God, his family and friends very much.Family members who preceded him in death included his parents, Frank and Mae Perkins, brothers, Frank Perkins, James Perkins, a sister Bette Mae Besette, and twin great granddaughters.

Charles had an adventurous side trying many different activities as he lived, he raced cars, scuba dived, sky dived, flew a gyro copter pulled by cars, took flying lessons, rode motorcycles and owned and operated carnival equipment.Charles also loved to travel.

Patricia Carol Alexander, 69, of Auburn was born on July 10, 1948 in Shubert, Nebraska to Marvin Sherman and Margaret Virginia (Wing) Alexander.  She was raised with her family of eleven siblings near the Shubert/Barada area. Patricia attended Hazeldale country school near Shubert through the 7th grade and when she was 28, Patricia moved to Auburn, Nebraska to work.  She worked at Corner's Connection, Kelly's Cafe, and Darling's Cafe where she was a dishwasher.  Patricia enjoyed crossword puzzles and cross stitching.

Patricia passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at the Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of sixty-nine years, ten months, and seven days.  She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Loblane, Dale, Marvin, Denny, and Robert Alexander.

Patricia is survived by her brothers: Harold Dean Alexander and wife Susie of Barada, NE; Donald Gene Alexander and wife Judy of Cook, NE; Ray Alexander and wife Penny of Lincoln, NE; sisters: Wanda Shafer and husband Terry of Pawnee City, NE; Norma Stevens and husband Jimmy of Tennessee; Merle Rae Holman of Lincoln, NE; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Constance "Connie" Lee Cress, 69, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at her son's home south of Horton, Kansas.

She was born on February 21, 1949 in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer and Clara Jean McConnaughey Kautz. Connie worked as a nurses aide at the Tri-County Manor in Horton, Kansas.

Survivors include three sons, Dino Goodpasture of Sabetha, Kansas, Jody (Shelly) Goodpasture and Michael Grell both of Horton, Kansas; daughter, Misty (Jason) Teele of Horton, Kansas; three sisters, Terri Anderson of Horton, Kansas, Sharon Pierson of Osage City, Kansas and Donna Foye of Dennison, Kansas; four brothers, Larry Kautz of Topeka, Kansas, Tony Kautz of Huron, Kansas, Kelly Kautz of Atchison, Kansas and Ron Kautz of Holton, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, David Kautz and Scott Kautz.

Dorothy Mae Burg Martin Ball, 86, Atchison, Kansas, passed away on May 15, 2018 at the Atchison Medicalodge. Dorothy was born in Effingham, Kansas on October 2, 1931. She enjoyed gardening, watching classic movies, playing with her dog and visiting with family, especially her great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was married to the love of her life, John Thomas Ball, Sr. on June 15, 1951 at the First Christian Church, Atchison. John preceded Dorothy in death on July 26, 2006.

Survivors include brother, Walter (Karen) Martin; her five children, Patricia (Roger) Newman, John T. (Kathy) Ball, Jr., Donald (Lynne) Ball, Diana Ball, and Dorothy (Kelley, Sr.) Fireoved. Also surviving are grandchildren: Robert (Amber) Newman, Steven (Karen) Newman, Brianna (Joseph Jr.) Mcgonnell, Lisa (Randy) McCerey, Faith (Don) Planinshek, Daniel (Laura) Ball, Alex (Heather) Ball, Kelley Fireoved, Jr., and Kendall (Katie) Fireoved. She had 20 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded by her parents; John Martin and Helen Hanney; step-fathers, Joseph Burg and Cecil Hanney; brothers, Michael, John Jr. and George (Pete) Martin, Leonard and Raymond Burg; sister, Trudy Jackson; grandson, John Ball III; and her devoted Pug companion, Muffy.

Esther Marie (Bauer) Koerperich, 77, of Hiawatha, Kansas passed away Monday, May14th, 2018, at Maple Heights Nursing Home.

 She was born July 1st, 1940 in Dawson, Nebraska to Roy and Stella (Krenzel) Bauer. Esther attended rural Hiawatha schools and graduated Hiawatha High School in 1958. After school she worked at the 5 and Dime, Chief Theater and the Egg Plant before going to work as an operator for the United Telephone Company and holding several positions for 20 years. She worked at the Brown County Appraisers Office and became the county Appraiser. Esther then started daycare in which the children she babysat became more like extended grandkids. She loved everyone of them dearly. After numerous years Esther became a teller at the Golden Eagle Casino where she retired. Esther was also an Avon Lady for the last 24 years. She loved the time getting out seeing customers and friends.

Esther was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was devout in her faith. Esther enjoyed being a wife to her one true love, Virgil. Together they led their family by example. They enjoyed motorcycling, camping, boating, and fishing trips. They were members of The Traveling Teepees. Esther enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, and aunt. She could usually be found in the stands or in her chair at her grandkid’s ballgames. She liked Cardinals baseball and KU basketball and would often call to remind others that a game was about to start on television. Esther enjoyed time with her siblings playing cards and always looked forward to the 4th of July family reunion.

Esther married Virgil Koerperich July 7, 1967. Virgil preceded her in death in 1993. Also preceding her in death are her parents;  brothers Donald and John Bauer.

She is survived by her children, Kim (Debbie) Koerperich of Skiatook, OK, Kenneth Koerperich, Michael (Kyndl) Koerperich and Jodi Lee all of Hiawatha, KS. Grandchildren: Suzanne, Kristopher, Ann, Joshua, Krista, Delaney, Alisha, August, Marissa, Myriah, Lottie and a grandson due in August. Great Grandchildren: Alexander, Ella, Katherine, Sylvie, Eloise. Brothers: Harold “PeeWee” (Carol), Darrell (Sara), Harlan, and Arlan (Debbie); sister Darlene Covert ;and and Sister-in-laws Lamonia and Leona Bauer as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.

A Celebration of Esther’s life is planned for 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, at the Zion Lutheran Church, with  Pastor Mike Dunaway officiating.  Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Corning.

Todd M. Farrant, age 52, passed away on Monday, May14, 2018 on the farm.

Todd was born August 2, 1965 in Marysville, Ks. to Frank Allen Farrant and Pearl V. (Miller) Farrant. He graduated from Seaman High school in 1983, and attended Washburn University. Todd was a dedicated and lifelong farmer and loved working the land as his ancestors did.

Todd was united in marriage to Lisa Y. (Groves) Farrant on November 11, 1989 in Meriden, She survives at home.

Todd is also survived by his mother,  Pearl Farrant Raugewitz, Ozawkie, four sons, Chase
Farrant, (Overland Park), Riley Farrant, (Topeka), Avery Farrant, (Overland Park), and Colby
Farrant of the home. Todd is also survived by his siblings, Debra (Steve) Baldwin, Joseph
(Pam) Farrant, Rick (Linda) Farrant, and Gary Farrant, step siblings Todd Raugewitz, Chad
(Brenna) Raugewitz, and Jill (Ronny) Lea, all of California. Todd was preceded in death by his father, Frank A. Farrant and step-father Ernest (Ernie) Raugewitz.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, was the number one fan of his sons and their activities, and he loved and adored his wife of 28 years. Todd was a gentle giant and peacemaker. He blessed everyone with his jovial laugh, love of life, and thoughtfulness. He was a member of St. Aloysius Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Christopher Lee Dotson, 41, of Atchison, KS passed away unexpectedly on Sunday May 13, 2018 at the Atchison Hospital.

Christopher was born on September 17, 1976 the son of Terry and Tammy (Hendrix) Dotson.  He graduated from Atchison High School in 1996 and attended Pittsburg State College.  Christopher worked for the JA Lillig, Excavating as a 101 Union heavy construction operator.  He recently started his own Painting company.  Christopher enjoyed motorcycles and loved sports, he loved coaching his son and other kids, whether it be wrestling, baseball, football, he thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Atchison school’s sports.

Christopher is survived by his son, Cayden Dotson of the home.  His mother; Tammy Dotson and Robert Servaes, Rushville, MO, his father Terry Dotson, Atchison, KS, maternal grandparents Carol and Dave Jeffrey, St. Joseph, MO, paternal grandparents, Jo Ann Dotson, Atchison, KS and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and his dog Miss Bella.

Dolan was born on March 11, 1938 in Kansas City, KS the son of Jessie and Lilly Everhart. He attended Morris Grade School, Kansas City, KS and graduated from Turner High School, Turner, KS in 1957. He had worked as a yard caretaker at Lake Quivera, then at Twin City Tool & Die, Armondale, KS, then for the Fairway Street Dept, Fairway, KS and then for Russell Stover for over 20 years retiring in 1979. Dolan enjoyed walking, visiting grandchildren and great grandchildren, watching old movies, cooking and was very devoted to his wife Ethel.

He was married to Ethel Virginia Gassert on Aug 21, 1966. She preceded him in death on Sept. 8th, 1998. Survivors include a son, Dolan Everhart, Jr, Butte, MT, three step-sons, Don Schlup, Missouri, Ed Amos, Lansing, KS, Arthur Gassert, Lawrence, KS, a step- daughter, Patricia (Ed) Jones, Russellville, MO, a brother, Henry Everhart, KC, KS, fifty-five grandchildren and 60 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two daughters, Darlene Reynolds, and Terri Bean, two step-sons, Dave and Robert Schlup, two brothers, Ross and Roy Everhart and a sister, Lilly Cruse.

Shila Louise Lawrence, 52 of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born on June 15, 1965 in Elwood, Kansas the daughter of Wendell & Bonnie Turner Blanton Sr. Shila worked as a CNA for the Tri-County Manor and as a caregiver. On May 14, 2015 she married Andy Lawrence in Hiawatha, Kansas he survives, of the home.

Additional survivors include, her father and step mother, Wendell & Betty Blanton Sr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; mother & step father, Bonnie & Daryl Williams of Netawaka, Kansas; daughter, Betsy Rose Martin of Topeka, Kansas; sister, Mary (Sean) Waggerman of Branson, Missouri; three brothers, Ronnie Dale (Lehea) Blanton of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Wendell (Aerrina) Blanton Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Sonny James Blanton of Topeka, Kansas and 4 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stillborn twin son.

Earl Emil Solt, 84, of Corning, Kansas passed away Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Life Care Center in Seneca.

Earl was born in Falls City, Nebraska on November 27, 1933 the son of Floyd and Sadie (Deuchler) Solt.

Earl was a farmer, fisherman, active community member, Nebraska Cornhusker fan, a husband and a dad. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In his later years, he enjoyed taking cruises and traveling the U.S. He was very proud of his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Corning, KS; sons, Ron (Kay) Solt of Concordia, KS, Doug (Bobbi) Solt of Beloit, KS, and Larry Solt of Topeka, KS; a daughter, Amy Barber of Wichita, KS; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Theodore “Ted” Kelly, 83, Atchison, Kansas, died Sunday, May 13, 2018, at his residence.

Mass of Christian burial will be on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Benedict Church with Fr. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant.  Interment will follow in the Mt. Ted was born August 20, 1934, in Atchison, Kansas the son of John James and Hattie (Huston) Kelly.  He attended Lincoln School and graduated from Atchison High School in 1953. Following graduation he attended St. Benedicts College graduating in 1957, and completed his Master’s work at Kansas State University.  Ted was an avid sports enthusiast, he loved football, baseball and all sports, especially his Denver Broncos and the San Antonio Spurs. 

Ted served at the Youth Center of Atchison for over thirty years as a cottage parent and assistant to the administrator.

He was a member of St. Benedict Parish. 

Survivors include three sons, Curtis Kelly, Sioux Falls, SD, Christopher Kelly, Atchison, KS, Steve Everage, Atchison, KS, and two daughters, Arthine Kelly, Topeka, KS, Sherri Kelly, Topeka, KS, his former wife Alberta Kelly, Atchison, KS, two grandchildren, Ebony N. Knott, Shayla J. Sneller, a great granddaughter Stormy A. Knott, a niece Gwendolyn Davis, Leavenworth, KS and a host of other nieces and nephews and a friend, Judy Ledell.

Ted was preceded in death by a son, Mark R. Kelly, two sisters, Lettie Mae Dysart and Margaret Tolson and three brothers, Kenneth, John, and Carl.

Irma Lorene Grundman, daughter of Herman and Mabel (Clark) Badberg, was born on February 13, 1919 at her grandmother’s farm house southwest of Talmage, Nebraska.  Her family lived on a farm one-half mile north of Grant School until she was 12, and then moved to a farm one mile south of that school.  After grade school, Irma attended Talmage High School where she graduated as the valedictorian of the class of 1937 and then taught five years in rural schools.  In the fall of 1939, Irma had her first date with Vernon Grundman, going with two other couples to the State Fair.  Irma maintained correspondence with Vernon while he served in the navy during the war.  Vernon was discharged on November 11, 1945 and on the 29th of that month he and Irma were married at the home of her parents.  Although confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Irma joined Vernon’s church in Talmage and remained a member for the rest of her life.

Irma’s first child was still-born, but she then bore five others whom she raised with great love and devotion.  She was a very busy housewife, raising and canning produce and butchering chickens not only for the countless meals of her family of seven, but also for the hired hands who helped Vernon with the farming operation.  Irma enjoyed hosting and attending family birthday parties and other family and community events.  She played thousands of games of pinochle, including playing in two pinochle clubs for over fifty years.  Irma and Vernon lived in the same farm house from 1949 until 2010.  In mid-2010 first Vernon, and then Irma, moved to the Ambassador in Nebraska City because of mobility issues. 

Irma used only assisted living services until April 2, 2018 at which time she was moved to skilled care. It was there that on May 12, 2018, she passed away having reached the age of ninety-nine years, two months, and twenty-nine days.  Of her close family, Irma was the last of her generation to pass away.  In addition to her still-born son and her son Tom who died in a drowning accident in 1974, she was preceded in death by her parents, husband of over 66 years Vernon, siblings Leola, Gaylord and Merlyn (Viola) Badberg, brothers-in-law Norbert (Edna) and Ralph (Ruby) Grundman.

Irma is survived by her loving children: Bill Grundman and wife Kathy of Nebraska City, NE; Kay Grundman of Tecumseh, NE; Janice Cole and husband Bob of Ocala, FL; Jim Grundman and wife Laura of Talmage, NE; 5 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.   

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at the Zion United Church of Christ, 302 Carol Street, in Talmage, Nebraska with Pastor Terry Weible officiating.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at The Hall Funeral Chapel in Auburn, Nebraska.  Family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in rural Talmage.

David C. Winters, 78, of Highland formally of Hiawatha, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Sunday May 13, 2018 at the Highland Care Center.

David was born March 13, 1940 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Charles and Viola Griep Winters. David graduated from Ft. Dodge High School and then joined the Navy where he learned to be a machinist, discharged at the rank of E3, after serving nearly 4 years, during the Vietnam War.

David married Viola Bass on January 21, 1972, in Pocahontas, Iowa. Their family moved to Hiawatha where they made their home for 20 years.

David was a machinist for Flair Fold wood fabrication plant in Hiawatha till they closed at which time he went to work as a security guard for the Golden Eagle Casino retiring at the age of 66.

David is survived by his wife Viola; three sons Charles (Michele) of Colorado Spring, Colorado, John (Krista) of PawPaw, Michigan, and Mike (Amanda) of Pueblo, Colorado. He has six grandchildren; David, Brett, Anthony, Chris, Dillion, and Ivan; and a great grandson; Noah.

A visitation is planned for Thursday May 17, 2018 from 11-1 at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Following the visitation David will be cremated.

William “Willie” Schawang, Jr., 81, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 13, 2018 at Falls City. He was born October 15, 1936 at Falls City to William and Mary (Nitzsche) Schawang.

He married Betty Sheehan on June 15, 1957 at Falls City. She passed away February 8, 2008.

Willie was raised northeast of Falls City and graduated Falls City Sacred Heart in 1954. He started farming with his father and also worked for Jerry Sinclair. When married the couple established their home northeast of Falls City. He farmed and raised livestock his entire life. He retired from farming in 2012. He helped organize a crime watch organization northeast of Falls City. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Willie is survived by his sons, Rick and his wife Lisa of Salem, NE, Darrin and his wife Kim of Falls City, daughters, Jeannie Mullins and her husband Dave of Falls City, Theresa Schawang of Orlando, FL, brother, David Joe and his wife Jan of Hastings, NE, ten grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a twin brother, Wayne and a brother Ronnie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Thomas Dunavan as the presiding priest. Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

Jessie M. McKittrick, 91, of Highland, previously of Troy, passed away on May 12, 2018. She was born November 1, 1926 in Bendena to John and Ella Roderick McKittrick. She attended Bendena schools. Jessie was a telephone operator in Bendena and Troy and had also worked at her brother’s restaurant, John’s Bakery in Troy.

She was a member of the Troy Christian Church.

Survivors include a nephew, Dennis McKittrick, his wife, Freda and their family of Troy; a niece, Lori Franken, her husband, Steve and their family of Topeka; and a sister-in-law, Carol McKittrick of Topeka. Jessie was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, John (Evelyn) and Richard.

Funeral services will be at Harman Rohde Funeral Home in Troy on Wednesday, May 16 at 11 AM. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Troy. Jessie will lie in state at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 15 after 12 noon with family receiving friends and relatives from 10 to 11 AM the day of the funeral.

Cyril C. Holthaus, 76, of Centralia, KS, died Friday, May 11, 2018 at Eastridge Nursing Home in Centralia.

Cyril was born July 4, 1941, on a farm west of Seneca, the son of Cyril F. and Emily Sudbeck Holthaus. He attended Baileyville High School in Baileyville and graduated in 1960; as a young he helped on the family farm.

On July 7, 1962 he entered the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and was honorably discharge as a PVT E-4. After his service to his country he returned to the family farm and stayed and farmed until his health determined he could no longer do the farming work. Cyril also made may trips to St. Joseph stock yard to bring back feeder pigs.

Cyril was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. He favorite pastime was driving around checking the health of local farm crops.

Survivors are four brothers, Leander, of Seneca, Eugene, Linus, and Elmer, all of Centralia; two sisters, Kathleen McCaffrey of Shelton, CT and Marietta Dalinghaus of Baileyville and many nieces and nephews.

Cyril was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law Jeanette Holthaus.

Gerald (Jerry) Corwin Speidel, 86, of Hiawatha, died Saturday, May 12, 2018, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

He was born to the late Gerald Corwin and Mary Miller Speidel, May 6, 1932, in Seoul, Korea.  With his parents in 1936 he returned to Charlottesville, VA graduating from Lane High School in 1950 before attending and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American History from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.

He enlisted in the Air Force after graduation and after completing Officer’s Candidate School he received his pilot’s wings at Reese Air Force Base in 1956.  Jerry was stationed at Osan Air Base in Korea in 1961 before being assigned to Forbes Air Base in Topeka in 1966 as a Standard Evaluation Pilot.  While stationed there he met and married Carol Nichols in 1968.  He was assigned to Ching Chaun Kuang (CCK) Air base from 1970 to 1972 for 15 months where he was an instructor pilot for C-130 aircraft which flew cargo and personnel to South Vietnam.  He received three air medals while serving in Taiwan.  Upon his return he served at McCoy Air Base, Orlando, FL as Transportation Squadron Commander.  Jerry retired from the Air Force George Air Base, Victorville, CA in 1977.  He piloted the last flight of the VT-29C, a twin-prop aircraft used for training, V.I.P., TDY and supply flights to the Davis Monthan AFC, AZ where the aircraft was retired from service.

In 1977 Jerry moved to Hiawatha with wife Carol and son, Brett to become the first trust officer of the Morrill & Janes Bank.  Jerry quickly became active in the community serving as District Vice-President of Kiwanis, President of US #36 Highway Association, Treasurer of Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the Morrill Library Board of Trustees, First United Methodist Church and many others. He created and organized the Hiawatha TubaChristmas in 1992. Jerry with wife Carol, owned and operated Carol’s Hallmark, The Green Giraffe, and Nichols & Lea in Hiawatha and Carol’s Hallmark in Junction City, Ks before closing their stores in 2008.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Carol, son Brett and his wife, Tamara, and granddaughter Sarah of Littleton, CO., brothers Bill (Elena) Speidel of Charlottesville, VA and John Speidel (Donna) of Rocky Mt., VA., nieces Robin (Chris) , Kiki (Mark), Lisa ( Andy) and nephew Joe and brother-in-law Jim Nichols of Lenexa, KS.

A Celebration of Jerry’s life will be held Saturday May 19, 2018 at eleven o’clock at the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha. Pastor Jacob Cloud will officiate.

Ruth Gruber, 92, of Falls City, NE (formerly of Morrill, KS), passed away May 12, 2018 at Falls City. She was born September 27, 1825 at Rulo, NE to Nick and Katherine (Frederick) Schawang. 

She married Carl Gruber on October 3, 1950 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Falls City

Ruth was raised in the Barada, NE area and attended rural school. Following her schooling she worked on the family farm while her brothers served in the military. When married the couple established their home one half mile west of the Gruber family farm where they farmed and raised cattle. She was a farm wife, homemaker and gardener her whole life. She lived on the farm until 2010 when she moved into Falls City Healthcare Community. She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Falls City and the Altar Society.

She is survived by her children, Charles and his wife Jane, Daniel and his wife Helen both of Morrill, Ramona Schuster and her husband Jerry of Hiawatha, KS, Delmer and his wife Deb of Falls City, Roberta Meier and her husband Mike of Beloit, KS, Ruby Gruber of Hiawatha, Merlin and his wife Lori of Morrill, eighteen Grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, brother, Earl Schawang and his wife Yvonne of Falls City, sister, Mary Jane Weinert and her husband Paul of Falls City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, John and Paul Schawang and one in infancy and a sister, Edna Michel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May18, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Thomas Dunavan as the presiding priest. Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the rosary and the church.

Donna Kay Harmon, 74, passed away on Feb. 10, 2018, at College Station Medical Center, College Station, TX. She was born on Nov. 11, 1943, in Stella, to William Matthew and Pearl Elizabeth Harmon.

Donna married Donald Vanwinkle in 1961 and to this union her daughter, Kimberly Ann Martin was born. The couple later divorced. Donna worked for several years at the Richardson County Treasurers Office before relocating to West Texas where she started her banking career. She moved back to Nebraska in 1981 and worked in the banking business until she retired and moved back to Texas in 2015.

Donna was an active member of the DOES Drove #56 in Falls City. Donna loved spending time at the beach and was most happy when she was talking and telling stories with her family and friends. She enjoyed going to concerts and listening to music.

She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Martin; granddaughter, Kayla Martin, both of Floresville, TX; grandson, Kyle Martin, Grand Island, NE; sister, Peggy Harmon, College Station, TX; brothers, Larry (Judy) Harmon, Kenneth (Donna) Harmon, both of Dawson; and many other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Memorials may be sent to family’s choice.

Joyce Sutherland, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Falls City, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018.

She was born January 1, 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska to Willard Franklin and Pearl (Schneider) Metzgar.

Joyce married Delmar “Del” Sutherland February 9, 1956 at the Congregational Church in David City, Nebraska; he preceded her in death April 30, 2016.

She attended Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education from University of Nebraska. Joyce was a teacher for over 40 years most of which was when she and Del lived in Falls City, Nebraska.

Joyce was a member of Francis Street First United Methodist Church, The Runcie Club, Joseph Robidoux Questers, St. Joseph Historical Society, Robidoux Row, National Education Society, Nebraska State Education Association and Eastern Star of Falls City.

Joyce and Del enjoyed gathering with friends, playing cards, family reunions, hosting Halloween parties, and worthy causes. Among her favorite worthy causes were Robidoux Row, Salvation Army, Child Saving Institute of Omaha, Nebraska, and Francis Street First United Methodist Church.

Years ago, she and Del made the decision to donate their bodies to the Nebraska Anatomical Board for study and research.

Joyce was also preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include daughters, Paula (Bob), Leah; sons, Quinten (Julie), Sherman (Rae); grandchildren, Alicia, Carla, Stephanie, Eric, Jonah, Tara, Veda, and a wealth of friends and relatives.

Ada “June” (Hasty) Robey Schindler, 90, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Presbyterian Manor.

June was born December 19, 1927, in Graham, MO, to Ernest Kyle and Clara Ethel (Zapf) Hasty. She enjoyed painting, woodcarving, and traveling. June married William “Bill” Robey, Sr. on March 7, 1947 in Skidmore, MO; he preceded her in death on July 9, 1980. She then married LeRoy Weishaar on September 4, 1982 in Nortonville, KS; they later divorced. June then married Don Schindler on August 8, 1990 in Hawaii. He preceded her in death on January 31, 2016. 

She is survived by four children, Anne Weishaar, Bill (Barbara) Robey, Pam (Jim) Moore, Sheryl (Rod) Coss; two step-daughters, Gail Reed, and Leslie (Jim) Crandall; and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren.

June was preceded in death by her parents; brother; sister; and son-in-law, David Weishaar.

A funeral ceremony will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church, 19861 Osage St, Nortonville, KS 66060. Ruth Emma Jones, 91, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2018 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, KS. 

She was born December 4, 1926 at the family home in White Cloud, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Cora (Schuler) and Herbert Lehman. 

Ruth grew up in White Cloud area and graduated from White Cloud High School.  She graduated from Highland Community College and furthered her education and graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a teaching degree.  Her teaching career covered 41 years which included teaching at Grandview Country School, White Cloud Elementary, Robinson Elementary, and Hiawatha Elementary.  While at Hiawatha Elementary she was honored as teacher of the year.

Ruth married Glen C. “Junior” Jones on February 5, 1946.  They spent most of their married life in the Zion and Robinson communities and then they later moved to Hiawatha.  He preceded her in death in 2012.

She was very active in the Zion and Hiawatha Methodist Churches.  She held various offices in the church and in the First United Methodist Women’s Organization.  She was very well known for her devotions.  She was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha.

Ruth was known for her faith in God, love of family, her sweet thoughtful, and gentle spirit, and her sense of humor.

She is survived by one son:  Jim (Teresa) Jones of Robinson, two daughters; Wanda (Randy) Scraper of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Marla (Wayne) Olson of Hiawatha; seven grandchildren; Jacqui (Kraig) Stites, Janelle (Chris) Veith, Jeff (Melinda) Jones, Heather (Jon) Oden, Matt (Kate) Scraper, Stephanie (Phil) Greenwald, Kyle (Sarah) Olson, Kristan (Aaron) Todd; Nineteen great grandchildren with one on the way, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, June Rush, one brother in infancy and one great grandson, Jacob Oden.

Funeral Services are planned for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha with interment following at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Edward “Ed” Curti,85, of Seneca died at his residence, surrounded by his wife and son, on May 9, 2018.

Ed was born on February 17, 1933 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to Henry and Mary Smith Curti. Ed grew up in Pawtucket and attended grade school, graduating from the 8th grade.

Ed was a carpenter, specializing in weather proofing, before he entered the military. On August 16, 1950, he was drafted in the United States Army. His first assignment was with the 9th Infantry Division at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. He was a career solider spending over 20 years in the service. Ed spent time in Korea, Japan, Germany. Ed earned the rank as an E-7 Staff Sargent. He started out as a turret artillery solider and later was a Supply Sargent. He was decorated with Oak Leaf Cluster 2 O/S Service Bars and many other awards. General W.C. Westmorland General United States Army Chief of Staff signed off on his discharge.

Ed married Luella Haverkamp on July 11, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. They met while Ed was stationed in Colorado and Luella was visiting her sister, who was a Nurse with the army. After the couple were married, they moved to Rhode Island, as Ed was still in service. They lived there for a short period and always move with him during his service to his country

In 1971, the couple moved to Seneca, and Ed went to work for Elmer Huninghake at Elmer’s Service Station on the west end of Seneca. In 1982, Ed started his on-service station on main street, calling it Ed’s Service Station. Ed never retired from the business he started, he only recently quit because of his health.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Shirley, Henry Jr., Lorene and Fred.

Ed is survived by his wife of 59 years, Luella; a son, Edward Curti, Jr of Seneca; and, a sister Connie Almeida from Cumberland, RI.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, St. Joseph Society, the Knights of Columbus Council 1769, Ponce De Leon 4th Degree, the Enlisted Association, Earl W. Taylor Post 21 of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War Post #7458, and was an usher for many years at Sts. Peter & Paul.

A rosary will be prayed at 2 PM on Friday, May 11, 2018 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM on Saturday, May 12th at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in St. Benedict.

Maurice P. “Buck” O’Keefe, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 6, 2018.

Buck was born in Atchison, Kansas on October 9, 1928 to Katharine Dolan and Maurice P. O’Keefe I.  Buck attended St. Benedict’s grade school and Maur Hill Prep where he played basketball and football.  Buck loved sports and carried with him at all times a newspaper clipping of the 1945 Maur Hill storybook ending where he shook off three tackler’s to score the game winning touchdown.  After high school, Buck matriculated to Notre Dame where he led an intramural football team that went undefeated.  Although they never directly played the actual Notre Dame football team, Buck challenged them often and knew that had they met up on the grid iron, his team would have tested the Fighting Irish.

After college, Buck returned home and attended Washburn Law school where he earned a Juris Doctor.  Buck returned to Atchison where he joined his father’s law firm.  He was soon called away to serve his country in northern Japan.  Buck saw no combat and defended no one other than opponents on the other base basketball teams.  Once again, Buck used his athletic prowess to dominate an intramural league.

After returning to Atchison in 1957, Buck met Martha Sellmeyer, a cute coed who was attending Mount St. Scholastica College at a Knights of Columbus dance.  The two married in 1959 and had seven children.

Buck served as Atchison City and County Attorney from 1958 through 1964.  For the next 26 years, Buck engaged in private practice.  In 1981, Buck was appointed district judge to Atchison and Leavenworth counties.  Buck retired from the bench in 1995.

While in Atchison, Buck served as President of the YMCA, Exalted Ruler of Elks, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, President of the Kiwanis Club, Judge Advocate for the American Legion, Chairman of Parish Council, Maur Hill Alumni President and President/Bell Ringer for the local Salvation Army.  One of Buck’s proudest moments however, was serving as the Grand Marshal in the 1991 Atchison St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Known as the “King” of volleyball, Buck, Wadlo, Kruge, Herbie and Dub would play volleyball every day at noon at the YMCA.  The “King” enjoyed traveling throughout the Midwest and beating teams that were much younger than his crew.  The “King” however was stripped of his title when on that fateful day in Des Moines, IA, he missed a serve to cost his team the championship.  Buck never missed one of his children’s high school sporting events.  Besides sports, Buck loved to wage “bets” with anyone and everyone no matter the content or sport.  Ever the Irishman, Buck was also known to hoist a few.

Eventually, Buck had to give up his volleyball and began taking up golf in earnest.  Buck invented what we now refer to as the “whip loop” at the top of his swing.  Buck was also able to stumble forward after every swing adding two more yards to his distance.  To complete his game, Buck had the uncanny ability to turn his wrists at the end of his putting stroke in the hopes of “curling” the ball to within two feet of the hole each time.

Throughout his life, Buck traveled with his beloved Martha all over the world.  He truly lived life to the fullest and was blessed with great family and friends.  There was not a stranger that he did not greet with a “hi neighbor” or “hi friend”.  He is preceded in death by his daughter Alice Anne Knapp.  He is survived by his wife Martha, his children, Patrick, Mary, Kitty, Joe, Steve, Barbara and twenty grandchildren.

Timothy “Tim” George Noble, 60 of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Mosaic Life Care Center surrounded by his family.

He was born on September 14, 1957 in Axtell, Kansas the son of Everett and Rita (Mohlman) Noble. He graduated from Sabetha High School in 1976 and also attended college at Highland Community College.

Tim worked at Ted Haden laying forms and then went to work at Keim Transportation as their dispatcher. He later bought his own trucks and leased them to Keim. He worked for Keim from 1980 to 1997. Later he went to work as a janitor at Highland High School and then he went to work for USD 430 from 2004 to 2012 as a janitor.

Tim enjoyed being around children. He had a big heart and became a foster parent to many children. He also enjoyed bowling and was on the Sabetha and Fall City league. Tim loved going fishing, being outside with his friends and family, playing cards games, dominos, going to the casino, wrestling, dancing and loved to cause trouble. He was known by many as Roady.

Survivors include his son Dylan Noble of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, Jared Sturtz and Jacob Hudson both of Rockport, Missouri; two brothers, Tom (Becky) Noble of Moore, Oklahoma and Jim Noble (Sandi Ralston) of Hiawatha, Kansas; two sisters, RoxAnn Grier and Susan Noble both of Hiawatha, Kansas; six nieces and nephews; Randy Rolston, Charleen White, Rita Grier ,Hiawatha, Kansas, Chrissy Murphy, Boston, Mass., Jeremy Noble, Moore, OK, Janna Grier, Horton, Ks, eight great nieces and nephews; and five great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Jason Noble in 1998.

 Frank Leon Christen was born to Rudolph Jr. and Irene (Branek) Christen on December 15, 1931 on the family farm southwest of Elk Creek, Nebraska. He attended country school through the eighth grade and then went to work on the farm helping his parents.

Frank served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. He worked for the Campbell Soup Company in Tecumseh after his military discharge.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Henderson on October 1, 1966 at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska.  To this union three children were born, Theresa, Janet and Jerome.

Frank and Virginia made their home south of Tecumseh where they farmed and raised their family.  He was a lifetime member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Steinauer and a 52-year member of the Tracy-Bates American Legion Post #370 of Elk Creek. His family and faith were Frank’s strength and in later years, even though Frank was home bound, he loved having his children and grandchildren come and visit with him about their lives and accomplishments. He was passionate about the farm and in his later years Frank enjoyed a joy ride around the section.  Frank enjoyed watching his cows, especially the babies during calving season, and was very proud of both his military service and his children and grandchildren.

He passed away Friday, May 4, 2018 at Bryan East in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 86 years.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Virginia of Tecumseh, daughters, Theresa Brown and husband Dan of Elmwood and Janet Tomky and husband Ken of Lamar and son Jerome Christen and wife Melinda of Filley, eight grandchildren, Alyssa, Cody, Haleigh and husband Chad, Hannah, Holden, Hayden, Evan and Aidan, one great-granddaughter, Chloe, sister, Leona Dostal of Gretna and brothers, Gerald Christen of Lincoln and Richard Christen and wife Sharon of Steinauer, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers and sisters-in-law. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Hope Ann Christen and sister, Joan Packett.

Mass of Christian Burial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Steinauer, Nebraska with Father Michael Christensen officiating.

Genevieve M. “Genny” Drimmel, 93, of Atchison, Kansas passed away May 4, 2018 at her home.

Genevieve was born on January 8, 1925 in Nortonville, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Regina (Orscheln) Weishaar. She attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Nortonville, Kansas and graduated from Nortonville High School in 1942.

She and Clarence F. Drimmel were united in marriage on August 27, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Church in Nortonville, Kansas. Mr. Drimmel preceded her in death on June 9, 2000.

Genny was previously employed at Electra Manufacturing and later served as the bookkeeper and secretary for her husband at Drimmel Electric for over 30 years.

She was a member of St. Benedict Parish, Atchison Shepherds Center, Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered in the hospital gift shop, and the Senior Bowling League. She enjoyed reading, embroidering, crocheting, working puzzles and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Brey, Lawrence, KS, Constance “Connie” (Joe) Brickner, Shawnee, KS, a son, Ivan Karl Drimmel, Kansas City, MO, four sisters, Lavern Davis, Nortonville, KS, Betty Jean Franks, Judy Wagner, Mary Ann Hall, all of Topeka, KS, two grandchildren, two step grandchildren, two great grandchildren and eight step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elvin, Vernon and Edwin Weishaar, and an infant sister, Eileen Weishaar.

Scott Evan Burgett, 35, of rural Humboldt, Nebraska was born on May 31, 1982 in Pawnee City, Nebraska to Ricky and Marilyn (Kuhlmann) Burgett.  He grew up with his older brother Eric on the family farm outside of Humboldt.  He attended grade school in Humboldt and graduated from the last graduating class of Humboldt High School in 2001.  After graduating, Scott enlisted in the United States Army and began his enlistment on June 6, 2001.  He served his country until it was recommended that he would be honorably discharged after his father passed away from a farm accident.  Scott was honorably discharged on December 14, 2001 and returned home to be with his family.

 Scott passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having reached the age of thirty-five years and eleven months.  He was preceded in death by his father Ricky Burgett, fraternal grandparents John and Esther Burgett, and maternal grandparents Reinhard and Leona Kuhlmann.

Scott is survived by his children Evelyn, Eleanor, and Garrett Burgett of rural Humboldt, NE; mother Marilyn Burgett of rural Humboldt, NE; a brother Eric Burgett and wife Shannon of Lewiston, NE; nephew Johnathan Burgett of Lewiston, NE; aunts: Deanna (John) Schmidt of Papillion, NE; Doreen Kuhlmann of Lincoln, NE; Teresa (Mark) Turnbull of Humboldt, NE; Karen (Mike) Karbowski of Pawnee City, NE; an uncle Orlin (Sue) Kuhlmann of Table Rock, NE; and many other relatives and friends.

Arlene Helen Burow, daughter of Fred H. and Christine (Knippelmeyer) Gobber was born March 20, 1928 at home on a farm east of Elk Creek, Nebraka.  She was the third of four children born to this union.  She was baptized April 15, 1928 by Rev. E. F. Geyer and confirmed October 25, 1942 by Rev Harm Bents at St James Lutheran Church.  Her confirmation verse was Matt. 24:13: The one who endured to the end will be saved. She attended school at Mt. Zion, District #45, across the road from her parent's home through the eighth grade.    

Arlene was united in marriage to LaVern A. Burow on April 15, 1948 by Rev. Harm Bents at St. James Lutheran Church.  They settled on a farm in the same section less than two miles from where she grew up.  Their marriage was blessed with five children.

Arlene and LaVern were lifelong members of St. James Lutheran Church.  She was a member of the WELCA holding various offices and served on many committees and was the custodian for many years.  She especially enjoyed quilting with the ladies at church.

She was a stay at home mom while her children were growing up and was at LaVern's side helping with the duties and chores on the farm.  She loved to bake and known for her cinnamon rolls and coffee cakes.  In 1977 she started cooking at the Elk Creek Schools and retired in 1999.  She enjoyed the students and teachers and formed many lasting friendships while working there.  

Arlene loved her family very much and many of her life's greatest pleasures were centered around family activities such as attending her children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's birthday parties, baptisms, confirmations, graduations, weddings and school activities. She was an avid Husker volleyball fan and enjoyed watching them on television.

Arlene became a resident of Longs Creek Village in Auburn in July of 2012 and resided there until April of this year.  After a short hospital stay, she was transferred to Good Samaritan in Auburn where she passed away May 3, 2018 at the age of 90 years.  

  Those left to celebrate her life are her children, Carolyn Hahn and husband Dennis of Johnson, Leon Burow and wife Deb, Arnita Endacott, Lorain Burow and wife Carol all of Lincoln, Bev Sears and husband Tom of Hiawatha, KS, eleven grandchildren, Terry (Kim) Hahn, Jaime (Eric) Luebbe, Amy Burow, Jessica Burow, Matthew (Wendy) Morrissey, Sara (J.D.) Gragg, Justin (Ariel) Burow, Michelle (Jeff) Houk, Kristen (Nick) Thompson, Jill (Mark) Soethout and Melissa (Gary) Keim, 17 great-grandchildren and another great-grandchild due to arrive in September, brother, Ervin Gobber and wife Marilyn of Humboldt, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

 Arlene was preceded in death by her husband LaVern (Nov. 21, 1995), her parents, her sisters and spouses, Lucille and Wilbert Rippe, Bernice Bohling Rodie, Carl Bohling, Vernon Rodie, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lucille and Wilbert Goos, nieces, Karen Haughton Lacey and Gloria Michel and nephews, Gary Bohling and Gale Bohling.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2018 at the St. James Lutheran (Long Branch) Church, rural Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastors Eric and Amalia Spruth-Janssen officiating.

Visitation will be at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska, Sunday, May 6, 2018 from 1-8 p.m., with family greeting friends from 2-4 p.m.

Memorials may go to the family’s choice.

Interment will be in the St. James Lutheran Cemetery, rural Humboldt, Nebraska.

It is with great sadness the family of Paul Francis Antes announces his passing on Monday, April 30, 2018, at the age of 73.

Paul will be forever remembered by his 3 children; Kelly (Michael), Michael (Amy), and Kevin (Christine). Paul will also be fondly remembered by his 6 grandchildren; Lincoln, Emma, Jace, Abby, Ellie, and Wyatt, all whom he loved dearly.

Paul is survived by his beloved siblings: Katie (Bob) McLoughlin, Lenexa KS, Bob (Sharon) Antes, Grain Valley, MO, Carl (Shirley) Antes, Emporia, KS, Ann (David) Boles, Madison, KS, Bernie (Debbie) Antes, McLouth, KS, Ray (LeeAnn) Antes, Edgerton, KS, Leroy (Sheila) Antes, Atchison, KS, Leo (Sharon) Antes, Olathe, KS, and his loving partner, Kathy Maggiore. Paul was predeceased by his sisters, Teresa Antes and Helen (Don) Kempin, Atchison, KS, and his parents, John and Della Antes.

After achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard and faithfully serving in Operation Just Cause (Panama Conflict) and Operation Desert Shield (Gulf War), Paul continued his love for aviation through a full and successful career flying with commercial airlines.

Having grown up on a farm, he preserved his love for the great outdoors, John Deere tractors, and healthy living throughout his life. He was loved and the world was a better place for having known him.

A Funeral Service is to be held on Friday, May 4th, 2018 at Prince of Peace Church 16000 W 143rd St., Olathe, KS at 1:30pm with visitation beginning at 12:30pm. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery at 83rd and Quivira, Lenexa, KS.

Dean Blair, 65, of Everest, KS died Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Stormont Vail in Topeka, KS.

He was born June 24, 1952 in Kansas City, MO, one of two children born to the late Roy David and Freda Mae Stahl Blair. He grew up in the Kansas City area and attended Argentine High School. He married Barbara Rossiter and with this union, three children were born. They later divorced.

Dean worked for Stirton Woodworking as a carpenter before his health forced him to retire. Dean loved music. He was the lead singer and played guitar in a band, Big River Sound. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them. Growing up a preacher’s son, Dean was taught to help anyone that he could.

He was is survived by his children; JR (Elisha) Blair of Everest, KS, daughters; Deanna (Randy) Maines of Coffeyville, KS and Kim Erdley of Sabetha, KS, grandchildren; Roger Dean Moore, Gavin Tabor, Jessica Perry, Michelle Sisco, Tesla Maines, Randy Maines, Jr., Nichole Maines, Harvey Webster, Alexis Torres, and Aric Dean Erdley, and 11 great grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by a sister Carolyn Leishing.

A gathering of family and friends in Dean’s honor, is planned for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2018, from at the Fisher Center, 201 E Iowa St., Hiawatha.

Samuel Raphael Ray passed away May 1, 2018 in Lawrence, Kansas at the age of 94.

Raphael was born in the Bitter Sweet community near Effingham, KS on April 27, 1924. He was next to the youngest of eleven children born to Eliga and Grace (Rodkey) Ray. Raphael’s mother died when he was 3 years old and was raised by his father and older siblings. Because his family moved a lot he attended numerous grade schools until they eventually settled on a farm west of Muscotah where he attended and graduated from Muscotah Grade School. Raphael graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, KS., participating in football, track, boxing and ping pong.

Raphael was a member of the Muscotah United Church and helped build the addition on the north side of the church. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Hiawatha, Muscotah Masonic Lodge, and served as leader for the Rose Valley 4-H Club.

Raphael was a farmer first and foremost. He loved raising a good crop and his family taking pride in both.

Raphael married Beatrice Barnett on May 12, 1945. They celebrated 70 years of marriage before her death. Raphael and Bea lived for 60 years on the farm they moved to when they were first married. Raphael sold his farm ground in 2003. He and Bea remained in the farm house until they moved to Horton, KS in 2004. Raphael and Bea owned numerous motor homes and loved to travel. For several years he and Bea traveled to Arizona for the winters. In 2010 Raphael and Bea moved to Lawrence, KS to be near their daughter.

Besides traveling Raphael’s other favorite pastimes were playing cards and dancing.

Raphael was preceded in death by his wife Bea, his parents, an infant brother, sisters; Geneva Ferrell, Gertrude Schneider, Bessie Monson, Leota Hollis, Susie Justice and brothers; Martin, Albert and Ralph Ray

Raphael is survived by two daughters Paulette Lehman (Keith), Lee’s Summit, MO; Debra Ryan (Joe), Lawrence, KS; three grandchildren, Pam Lewis (Kevin), Shawnee, KS; Matt Taliaferro (Sara), Shawnee, KS, Derek Lehman (Genni), Independence, MO; four great-grandchildren Kara and Paige Lewis, Brendon and Aaron Lehman; step-grandchildren Jennifer (Kellen) Fischer, Rich Hill, MO; Heather (Brian) Lowe, Olathe, KS; Jim Ryan (Jessie), Lenexa, KS and Nellie Betzen (Alex), Houston, TX; and eight step-great-grandchildren; one sister Daisy Kiefer of Blue Springs, MO and many nieces and nephews.  

Funeral services will be held at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary May 5 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the family plot at the Muscotah Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10:00 to 11:00 before the services.

Memorial services to celebrate the life of Margaret Bergman, of Hiawatha, are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Christian Center, 519 North First St, Hiawatha. Pastor Tony French will officiate.

Margaret joined her Lord and Savior December 30, 2017, at the age of 99.

Marcus Howard Denton, 20, formerly of Atchison, KS, was murdered on, Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Colorado Springs, CO.

Marcus was born on May 21, 1997 in Atchison, KS, the son of Patrick Mark and Olivia (Oliver) Denton. He graduated from Atchison High School in 2015 and attended Highland Community College. Marcus was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He enjoyed basketball, baseball, music and hiking.

Survivors include his parents Mark and Olivia Denton of Atchison, KS, two brothers Gregory Denton, Atchison, KS, Patrick Denton, Jr., Atchison, KS, a sister Alexandria Denton, Atchison, KS, grandparents John and Barb Oliver, Atchison, KS, aunts and uncles, William Everage, Thomas Everage, Vincent (Millie) Oliver, Darlene Everage, Denise Cluke, Davina Everage, Vanessa (John) Cluke, Jesse (Stacey) Greenly, Brandy (Anthony) Ross, Jennifer Oliver, Marilyn McCants-Denton, Cheryl Denton, Leslie (Matthew) Denton, a great aunt, JoAnne Norton and girlfriend, Lauren Pierce, Atchison KS.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Louise Oliver and paternal grandparents James and Virginia Denton, and aunts Cindy and Sandi Denton.

Jeffrey Lynn “Jeff” Minard, 56, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on April 30, 2018.

Funeral services will be on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Cremation will follow the services with interment at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Andrew J. Somora Foundation and may be left in care of the funeral home.  

He was born on May 12th, 1961 to Monte Minard and Anna “Marie” Vandrell Minard. He was born and raised in Atchison, KS and attended Trinity, Franklin and Atchison High School.

On February 24, 1979 he married Robin Ferris at the first Christian Church in Huron, KS. Together they started their family in the Atchison area and later moved to Falls City, NE.

While living in Atchison, he was employed by Benedictine College and the Mount as a maintenance worker. He moved to Falls City, NE in 1991 where he was employed as a shift supervisor for WASP, Alamo Group and was promoted to a plant manager for Vantec Inc.

Jeff was a jack of all trades, he did carpentry work, vehicle repairs and often would help others in his spare time. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and most of all spending quality time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Robin of the home, their 3 children Ryan (Melissa) Minard of Crocker MO, Shane (Ashley) Minard of Horton KS and Amberly (Timothy) Moore of Rushville, MO, 9 grandchildren; Madison Minard, Dayton Minard, Abigail Minard, Remington Minard, Lucas Moore, Elaina Minard, Weston Minard, Bailey Moore and Joselyn Moore, his sister Debbie (Randy) Jewell, his father Monte and Stepmother Sue Minard, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Mother Anna “Marie” Minard, his grandparents and his father in law Charles Ferris.

James Douglas Kuker, age 71 of Auburn, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society-Auburn.

Survivors include his former wife of 27 years Carol Splichal of Auburn; daughters Brenda Mays of Pine Top, AZ; Lori Kuker of Shubert; Tonya (Bobby) Findley of Hermiston, OR; Sasha Rightsell of Auburn; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister Patricia (Robert) Joy of Falls City; brother Lee Kuker of FL; sister-in-law Sheryl Kuker of SC; other relatives and friends.

Family will greet friends Friday, May 4, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A celebration of life will be at a later date.
