Pamela Bell Pfannenstiel, 67, of Garland, TX, formerly of Valley Falls, KS, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022 at her home with family by her side. She was born August 30, 1954 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of James Donald and Frances Eugene (Pennington) Boyce.

          Pam graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1972. She was an ATT Coordinator, delivering parts internationally, at Ericsson for 15 years.

          She married William Thomas “Bill” Pfannenstiel on April 26, 1975 Topeka, KS. They celebrated over 47 years of marriage.

          Survivors include her husband, Bill of the home; 2 brothers, Frank E. Boyce of Atchison County, KS and Raymond E. Boyce of Holton, KS; sister-in-law, Susan Pfannenstiel of Topeka, KS.

          She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Frances Boyce; brother, Jim Boyce and sister, Donna M. Johnston.

          Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial will follow at Valley Falls Cemetery. Janet Kay (Fossum) Roe, 79, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on October 7, 1942 in Osceola, Wisconsin to Henry Orville and Inez (Sime) Fossum.  On March 5, 1960, Janet was united in marriage to Gerald “Jiggs” Roe.  To this union five children, Michael, Gary, Bryan, Angela and Kelly were born.  Many years were spent being a scorekeeper for her young boys while Jiggs was the coach for Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football.  There were a lot of hours spent on the playing fields.  Janet worked at Nationwide Paper Company in Los Angeles, California for seven years.  In 1983, she and the family moved to Moore, Oklahoma when Jiggs was transferred to the GM plant.  After 30 years of retirement and a few years back in California, they moved to Humboldt, Nebraska in 1993 and of course, all five kids eventually followed.  Janet worked for Jack Cooper at the Humboldt Standard from 1995-2017 where she really enjoyed working in the office and talking to all the people that would come in.

Janet’s most valued treasures in life were her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their cat “Norska”.  She was extremely wonderful at knitting and crocheting.  Janet made so many beautiful blankets, rugs, slippers and pot holders.  She enjoyed playing pinocle and solitaire, going to the casinos in Las Vegas, Laughlin and Sac & Fox, dancing and country music-both old and new.  Janet also had a beautiful collection of cardinals.

Janet passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022, at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital in Pawnee City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of seventy-nine years, two months and twenty-seven days.  She was preceded in death by her parents, five grandchildren, 4 brothers-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law.

Janet is survived by sons: Mike and Bryan Roe both of Humboldt, NE; Gary Roe of Cook, NE; daughters: Angie Reyes and husband Francisco of Humboldt, NE; Kelly Joy and husband Brian of Humboldt, NE; grandchildren: Ben Jafari and wife Melissa of Beatrice, NE; Brandon Reyes of Auburn, NE; Breanna Reyes of Lincoln, NE; Jana Joy of Omaha, NE; Jacob Joy of Humboldt, NE; great-grandchildren: Zoey, Ian, Baker, Kaydence, Jase, Brennden and Cameron, sisters: Crystal DeMars of Milaca, MN; Sherry Whiteker and husband Joe of Princeton, MN; sister-in-law Kathy Nicholi and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Janet was patient, kind, loving and will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

A Celebration of Jiggs and Janet’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the Humboldt Auditorium in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Tim Llewellyn officiating. A livestream broadcast of services will be available on our Wherry Mortuary/Wherry Monument Facebook page.

Robert “Bob” Eugene Wagg, 94, of Falls City, NE, peacefully went to his eternal home February 26, 2022 in Kansas City. He was born November, 24, 1927 at his home in Trego County, Kansas.

Bob was born and raised on the family farm in Trego County, KS. Bob lost his father when he was 8 years old.  He graduated from Ellis High School in 1945. Later he worked the family farm and drove a supply truck for the oil fields. Bob was united in marriage to Doris A. Armbruster on March 19, 1954 in Ellis, KS. The couple returned to the family farm and to their union they had 6 children. Bob drove a fuel truck for Schreiners in Ogallah, KS. The family moved to Ogallah to a home with running water and indoor toilets. Bob had a career with the Ogallah CO-OP where he delivered gas, worked the service station and the grain elevator. The family moved to Hoxie, KS, where he continued his career with the CO-OP, in Rexford, KS. In 1990 Bob retired and moved to Falls City, NE. He spent the 32 years of retirement doing what he did best – working. He worked with his daughter Judy Herbster and her husband Charles W. on the Carico family farm.

On the farm, Bob performed numerous jobs, but his favorite part, of his daily tasks, was watering cattle and building, fixing and maintaining the electric fences. The best part of Bob’s day was watching the sun rise and just being part of the farm family. Bob was not only a hard worker, he was man among men – kind, caring, respected. Throughout his life and to his last breath, Bob’s quiet spirit had a powerful impact on the lives he touched. 

Bob is survived by his daughter Sandy Schaben her husband Jim and their children and grandchildren: Amy and Don Blaser (Macy, Kolby, and Lexi), Amanda and Mark Schwarz (Madison and Cameron), Aaron and Jenna Schaben (Madden and Linden); his son Duane Wagg and his daughter Tamara Perez and her husband Charlie (Aden, Alissa, and Adam); his daughter Anna Cooper and her husband Mark and their children (Samantha and Austin Cauthon, Alex and Rachel Cooper, and Eli Cooper); his daughter Sherri Willgohs and her husband Dan. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother, and two daughters Jeanne his infant daughter, and Judy Herbster.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home. A family graveside service will be held at a later date in Ellis, KS.

Kay Frances Masqua, of McLouth, KS died Sunday February 27, at the Providence Hospital in Kansas City, KS.

She was born April 23, 1939 the daughter of Clarence Eugene and Lilla Marie Scott Lanphear. She attended school in McLouth, KS and was a 1958 graduate of McLouth High School.

Kay worked at Hallmark Cards from 1963 to her retirement in 1999. She volunteered at the Topeka Rescue Mission for many years. She was a member of the McLouth Church of the Nazarene, and worked with her husband in traveling ministry.

She married Cedric “Joe” Masqua in Kay County, OK on August 3, 1957. He preceded her in death on January 15, 2019.

Survivors include two sons, Vernon (Cheryl) Masqua, McLouth, Marvin Masqua, Mesa, AZ, four grandchildren, Bobbie Jo Smoots, Devon Masqua, Lew Masqua, Keegan Masqua and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Elaine Masqua Kibler and Angela Masqua Forshee.

Eunice D. Tucker, 81, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at her home on the Kickapoo Reservation.

She was born on August 16, 1940 in Horton, Kansas the daughter of Ben and Irene McGosie Cadue.

Eunice worked for several casino's before she retired. She was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe and the Kennekuk Church.

On April 1, 1968 she married Edward L. Tucker in Panama City, Florida. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Christopher Tucker of Horton, Kansas; sister, Marlene Jeannotte of Horton, Kansas and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 6:00 P.M. at the Kickapoo Community Building on the Kickapoo Reservation. Bertha Josephine Potts, 92, of Topeka, KS formally of Nortonville, KS died February 25, 2022 at KU St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, KS.

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM, Tuesday March 1, 2022 at the Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Nortonville, KS, with Rev. Bob Carter officiating the service. Bertha was born on August 6, 1929, at the family farm house in Nortonville, Kansas the daughter of Raymond and Clara (Higley) Ellerman. She graduated ACCHS in 1947, and earned a teaching degree. She married Arthur D. Potts on April 18, 1948, and he preceded her in death on June 19, 2003. She was a longtime member of the Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church and played the organ for many years. She worked as music teacher for St. Joseph Catholic School in Nortonville. Bertha enjoyed playing the piano, crocheting, painting and scrape booking.

She is survived by her son’s; Richard “Dick” Potts, Don (Cheryl) Potts, Grandchildren; LeAnne Potts and Coder (Shirley) Potts; Great- Grandson, Jackson Schmidt and Sister Esther Willis. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son; Daniel Potts, sisters; Ruth Ireland and Vera Hurst.

Gary Theodore Johnson, 84, of Ozawkie, Kansas, peacefully passed from this life Friday afternoon February 25, 2022, with his loving family by his side at home.

 Gary was born on September 26, 1937, at a farm north of Vliets, Kansas, to Ted and Lucille Johnson. Gary’s parents moved to Axtell, Kansas, in 1940 where he attended grade school and high school and lettered all four years in four sports: football, basketball, track and baseball. Upon his graduation in 1956 he joined the Air Force.

 On June 15, 1957, Gary married the love of his life, Eileen (Vandorn) Johnson. The highlight of his military service was their two-year tour of duty on Guam. Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1960, he attended Washburn University and graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1963. He taught social studies and coached at Dover, Centralia, and Sabetha High Schools. In 1965 and 1967 Gary and Eileen’s family grew with the addition of their two children, Brent and Sharilyn, who he loved spending time with, as well as hunting and fishing.

 In 1968 Gary left teaching and became a salesman for Team Sporting Goods in Topeka, and in 1972 he joined the sales team of the Arch Billmire Company selling to the sporting goods dealers in Nebraska and Kansas. In 1977 he was promoted to Regional Sales Manager and the family moved to Olathe, Kansas. In 1985 he was promoted to Vice President of Sales for the company and moved to Reno, Nevada. He retired in 1999 after which he and Eileen enjoyed many trips to Europe and the Pacific as well as summers at Lake Almanor, California, and winters in Tucson, Arizona, where he pursued woodcarving and silversmithing. In 2005, he and Eileen moved back to Ozawkie, Kansas, and have enjoyed many friendships, golfing, and fishing.

 Gary is survived by his wife Eileen, son Brent Johnson (Lisa), Manhattan, KS, daughter Sharilyn Bainter (Bill), Reno, NV, sister Joyce Dorner, Orlando, FL, four grandchildren: Carissa Johnson, Topeka, KS, Coleman Johnson (Rachel), Osage City, KS, Kara Bainter Warren (Jacob), Reno, NV, Ryan Bainter, Reno, NV. Gary was preceded in death by his father Ted Johnson, mother Lucille Johnson Thompson, stepfather Audley Thompson, sister Betty McAtee, brother Roger Johnson.

Mary “Tip” Simpson, 87, of Omaha, NE, passed away February 25, 2022 at Omaha, NE. She was born November 8, 1934 at Dawson, NE to Sebastian and Mary (Alfers) Koelzer.

She married Donald E. Simpson on June 4, 1955 at Falls City. He passed away May 24, 1995.

Tip was raised in Richardson County and graduated from Falls City Sacred Heart High School in 1952. When married the couple made their home in Omaha. She worked various food service jobs including numerous schools and grocery stores. She retired in 1988. In retirement she enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. She was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Omaha.

Tip is survived by her sons, Mark of Florissant, CO, Daniel and his wife Cheryl of Omaha, Jeffrey of Crescent, IA, Michael and his wife Judy of Murray, NE, nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Timothy, sisters, Dorothy Kerl, Marge Kopf, Rita Darveaux, brothers, Robert, Barney and Jerry Koelzer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Lawrence Stoley as the presiding priest. Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited 1 hour prior to the service at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Lawrence “Emery” Hale, 91, of Mayetta, KS, passed away tragically due to a house fire, Sunday, February 20, 2022 at his home on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation. He was born November 30, 1930 in Mayetta, KS, the son of Joseph P. Hale and Jane Blandin Puckkee.

          Emery graduated from Circleville High School in 1948. He attended 2 years at Highland Community College and Haskell University earning his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts for heating and air conditioning. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

          He worked for Orkin Extermination and later for Potawatomi Housing Authority in maintenance.

          Emery was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was an active member of We-ta-se Post 410 for many years.

          He married Barbara Marie Marshno in 1954. She preceded him in death in 1969.

          Survivors include his son, Martin Hale (Donna) of Holton, KS; brother, Roy Hale of Mayetta, KS; granddaughter, Megan Hale of Denver, CO and many extended family members.

 Dixie Marie (Nickell) Bontrager, 87 of Whiting, KS, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at home surrounded by her family.  She was born August 16, 1934 in Wetmore, KS, the daughter of Ross R. “Dick” and Velma L. (Mayer) Nickell.

 Dixie attended a one-room school house, Pea Ridge School, from 1st through 6th grade and graduated from Wetmore High School in 1952.  

 Dixie worked outside of her home most of her life. During high school summers she worked as a waitress at Cottage Inn in Horton, KS.   After graduation she moved to Topeka, KS and worked at Merchant’s National Bank for over 8 years.  Dixie carried mail as a rural mail carrier for over 30 years out of Holton, KS.  She served as President of the District Rural Letter Carrier’s Association and was a charter member of the VFW Post 1367 Auxiliary at Holton.  She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Holton, KS.

 On May 4, 1958, Dixie was united in marriage to Jack Bontrager in Holton, KS.  Dixie and Jack shared over 63 years together living most of their married life in the Whiting and Holton area.  

 Survivors include Jack of the home; three sons Mark (Vicki), Bruce, and Rex (Cindy) who all reside within a few miles of the home.  Dixie has one sister Shirley Sweeting (Roger) of Key West, Florida; 9 grandchildren Chad (Mandy), Chase (Kristel), Curt (Sydney), Nelson, Alexandria, Benjamin, Emma, Tori (Blake) and Brett; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Arlene Davidson, Doris Morris, and brother Keith Nickell.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at Mercer Funeral Home at Holton, KS.  Family will meet with friends and family immediately following the service at Trinity Lutheran Church, 401 Cheyenne Drive, in Holton, KS.  A private family burial will be held at a later date at Wetmore Cemetery. Juanita McFeeters, 83, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday evening, February 23, 2022, at Amberwell Hiawatha where she had been a patient from a fall.

She was born in Virginia, January 4, 1939, one of nine children born to Walter and Daisy Hatfield Cheek.  Juanita moved around several times through the years with her family before settling in Hiawatha in 1980.  She worked as a cook at the Maple Leaf and Gus’s Family Restaurant, both in Hiawatha for a number of years before she retired.  In her retirement years, Juanita enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Juanita married Richard McFeeters for several years before they divorced.

Survivors include three daughters:  Lori McFeeters of Illinois, Tammy McFeeters of Stella, Nebraska, Judy Johnson of Hiawatha; three sisters:  Bessie Stratton, Mary Cheek of Illinois, and Wanda Kierstead of Washington; 7 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one on the way.

Juanita was preceded in death by her parents; a son Danny Pace, 2 grandsons:  Milo Johnson and Brandon Pace, three brothers:  Ralph, John, Arnold, two sisters:  Patty and Ethal.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha from 12 noon until 5 Sunday afternoon where the family will meet with friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday, to go in procession to Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, for graveside services to follow.

Rita E. Haug, 91, of Seneca, died Thursday morning, February 24, 2022, at Life Care Center in Seneca.

Rita was born on November 14, 1930, on a farm northwest of Baileyville the daughter of Clement A. and Clementine Fangman Koch. She grew up there attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Baileyville High School in 1948. Upon graduating, she was employed at the ASC office in Seneca until 1951.

On March 31, 1951, Rita married Ernest W. Haug at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. They lived on a farm east of St. Benedict; where she worked with her husband and children. Rita was a house wife until 1974, at which time she went to work for the Nemaha County Road and Bridge Dept and retiring in 2000. In 1993 the couple retired from farming and moved into Seneca.

Rita had many interests in her life. When in high school, she enjoyed sports, especially basketball and baseball. In family life Rita enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and embroidery work.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the St. Ann’s Altar Society of the church. Rita was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. She was a member of the Nemaha Valley Hospital Card Club, volunteered at the Sts. Peter and Paul School and Sts. Peter and Paul Mission Center.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband Ernie on February 13, 2017; a son, Joe Haug on September 7, 1975, Great-grandchildren Serenity and Grace Heinen on May 1, 2014. five sisters, Eileen Rusche, Teresa Spiker, Angela Roeder, Evelyn Rothenberger and Mary Olberding; and three brothers, Regis Koch, Mark Koch and Rock Koch.

She is survived by her children, Jean (Jim) Heinen of Axtell, Joyce (Dennis) Henry of Seneca, Margie (Kent) Heinen of Kelly, Marion (Brenda) Haug of Seneca, Mary (Roger) Strathman of Baileyville and Patty (Keith) Haverkamp of Seneca; a brother Joseph Koch of Baileyville; 21 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 26th, at Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church at Seneca.

Violet Katherine (Kottich) Heim, 94, of rural Dawson, Nebraska was born on April 4, 1927 in rural Falls City, Nebraska to Walter Sr. and Emma (Scheitel) Kottich.  She attended Sunny Hill country school before graduating from Falls City High School with the class of 1944.  After graduation, Violet continued her education at Platte Guard Business School in St. Joseph, Missouri.  She then worked for Western Tablet and Stationery in St. Joseph and the Richardson County Bank in Falls City.  On August 28, 1949, Violet was united in marriage to Lowell Heim at the Zion United Church of Christ northeast of Falls City, Nebraska.  To this union, three children, Joseph, Charles and Ann were born.  The couple made their home and raised their family on a farm near Dawson where they together operated a Grade A Dairy for 46 years.  Violet was a member of the Dawson United Methodist Church and later the United Methodist Church in Humboldt.

Violet went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at her home in rural Dawson, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of ninety-four years, ten months and nineteen days.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Walter (Mildred) Kottich Jr., Sterling Kottich, Virgil (Jan) Kottich and Charles Kottich.

Chazz Robert Exon, 29, of Olathe, KS, died unexpectedly Monday, February 21, 2022 at his home.

Chazz was born October 30, 1992 in Hiawatha, Kansas, the oldest of four children born to Cliff and Stacy Overfield Mackey.  Chazz graduated with the class of 2011 from Hiawatha High School and attended K-State University prior to moving in 2014 to Olathe to being a career with O’Reilly Auto Parts, leading up to his current position as territory sales manager where he had received numerous sales awards.

Chazz was blessed with a loving big family and an endless list of friends and associates.  He was preceded in death by his grandfather Jim Garrett, grandmothers Josephine Beckner, Betty Satterfield, infant cousin Paige Bostic, great-grandfather Robert Exon Sr. and grandfather George Mackey.

Survivors include his parents Cliff and Stacy Mackey of Hiawatha, brothers:  Nicholas of Olathe, and Sidney Mackey of Hiawatha, sisters:  Breanna Mackey of Kansas City, and Courtney Joslin of Falls City, NE, two nieces Gabby and Reyna Mackey of Hiawatha; grandmothers: Linda Garrett of Hiawatha, Sheri Mackey of Wyoming, grandfather Dr. Robert and Karen Exon of Council Grove, KS, great-grandmother Onalee Exon of Topeka.

Growing up with his Aunt Renee Garrett Bostic, and Uncles Jeff Luoma and James Garrett, III, three aunts:  Heidi Mackey, Kathy Waters, and Christine Goldsberry with numerous other aunts and uncles.

Chazz has an enormous list of cousins most of which he considered siblings due to their bonds he shared with them.  Being a friend of Chazz’s was considered an honor because having that meant you were bonded for life and he would walk through fire for you.  He touched the heart of so many people and accomplished so much in just the short 29 years we were blessed to have him and his legacy will carry on forever.

A celebration of Chazz’s life is planned for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2022, at the First Baptist Church, 210 Lodge Road in Hiawatha.  Rich Lehmkuhl will officiate.  Interment will follow Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Sharon Teresa (Weinmann) Meier, age 84, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2022, surrounded by her family at Atchison Senior Village.

Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Parish rosary will be recited on Friday, Feb. 25th at 6:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Sharon was born on July 12, 1937, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Louis P. Weinmann and Virginia (Antle) Weinmann. She attended St. Joseph’s Grade School and graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in 1955.

She married John Meier on June 1, 1957, at St. Joseph’s Church in Atchison and they were married for sixty-one years until his passing on January 19, 2019.

She was employed with the Muchnic family for her entire working career of sixty-five years. She served as a secretary at LFM, Valley Company and the Muchnic Foundation all in Atchison, KS. For the last twenty years she was the caretaker of the Muchnic Home and Art Gallery.

Sharon loved gardening and flowers and for many years visitors to the Muchnic Art Gallery enjoyed the gardens that she and John created and maintained. She enjoyed frequenting casinos and playing bridge.

She is survived by her son, Terry Meier (Shelley Ryan); two sisters, Alice (Bob) Scott, Deborah (Ed) Schneider; a brother, Dennis (Jeanine) Weinmann; and two grandchildren, Holden and Mackenzie.

She is predeceased by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Edwin Weinmann and Br. Robert Weinmann, CSC.

Michael Anthony Winsea, 63, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 at the Olathe Hospice House in Olathe, Kansas.

He was born on September 26, 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of Leland and Joan Bent Winsea Sr. Michael had been working for Cross Winds in Hiawatha, Kansas before he became ill.  Michael married Holly Tonepahote in Kansas City, Missouri. He enjoyed playing basketball, football, baseball and loved his Kansas City Chiefs.

Martha Norman 97 of Oskaloosa passed away peacefully at home on February 19, 2022. She was born on February 3, 1925, in Oskaloosa, Kansas. The daughter of Ezra and Lula (Stout) Church. She was the eighth of ten children.

Martha was a member of the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary post 36. She worked at many local retail stores and did volunteer work.

She was married to John A. Norman on November 10, 1946, in Kansas City, Kansas. They farmed and raised three children. Survivors are Mary Helmick, Baltimore, MD, and twin sons John Norman (Suzanne), Gene Norman (Charlene), seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Celebration of life services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 26 at Oskaloosa United Methodist Church, with a private family burial later. Casual dress. Memorials suggested to Friends of Hospice Jefferson County.

Lucy Gist, 101, of Falls City, NE, passed away February 22, 2022 at Falls City. She was born June 15, 1920 at Falls City to Glenn D. and Virge M. (Close) Martin.

She was united in marriage to Thomas F. Gist on July 19, 1943 at Montgomery, AL. He passed away July 28, 1962.

Lucy was raised at Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1938. She then attended Miss Huff’s School of Commerce in Kansas City. She then returned to Falls City and worked for her father. When married the couple made their home in various places due to Mr. Gist’s military service. They returned to Falls City where she became a homemaker. She enjoyed serving on many of the community boards and clubs in Falls City, she was especially proud of her long-time service to the Steele Cemetery Board. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Lucy is survived by her sons, Thomas J. “Joe” Gist of Rulo, NE and his special friend Hope Schawang and Martin R. “Dick” Gist and his wife Mary Jane of Falls City, grandson, Thomas R. Gist and his wife Emily of Falls City and their children, Beckett and Graham. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Virgil D. Martin.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Steele Cemetery with her nephew, Pastor Rick Martin officiating.

Susan K. Mencl, 78, of Holton, passed away Sunday, February 20, 2022 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

She was born February 5, 1944 in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Bernard and Edna Anderson Woodall.  She graduated from Wetmore High School in 1962.

Susan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Holton.  She loved the Holton community and was active with various organizations, her church, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Susan had worked at the Holton USD 336 Superintendent’s Office, Anderson Construction, and the Denison State Bank.  In 1984 she opened The Store, which later became the E.Z. Shop.  She also managed Fast Trax for twenty-seven years and helped at BNB accounting during tax season.

She married Robert L. McDaniel in May of 1961.  They were divorced.  She married Jerry L. Mencl in June of 1993.  He survives, of the home.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Dennis McDaniel and her sister, Linda Ireland.

Other survivors include a daughter, Pam Hossfeld (Perry), Charleston, South Carolina; a son, Jeff McDaniel (Kathy), Tecumseh; a step-daughter, Danie (Mencl) Pardee; a step-son, Ryan Mencl; eight grandchildren, Jake Hossfeld (Kristina), Garret Hossfeld (Allison), Austin Hossfeld, Jimmy Black (Kylee), Austin Black (Lacey), Gavin Pardee, Kaeda Pardee and Brynn Pardee, and seven great grandchildren, Lily Hossfeld, Drake Black, Dakota Black, Jaci Black, Karson Black, Parks Black and Raven Black.

Earl Lloyd Gimeson, 76, of rural Humboldt, Nebraska was born on October 18, 1945 in Orleans, Nebraska to Otis and Anna Belle (Smith) Gimeson.  He was raised on a farm near Alma, Nebraska and attended school in Orleans graduating from Orleans High School with the class of 1963.  After high school, Earl worked construction where he built grain bins and silos.  He then worked for the elevator in Davenport for many years.  Earl later moved to Humboldt, Nebraska and was united in marriage to Carol Topp on December 27, 1989.  The couple moved to a farm south of Humboldt where they have lived ever since. 

Earl passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at his home in rural Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of seventy-six years, three months and thirty days.  He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and seven brothers.

Rose Marie (Lewis) Rears, 91, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on April 30, 19430 in Barada, Nebraska to Guy Sutton and Ethel (Howard) Lewis.  She was raised on her family farm and attended Bratton Union Consolidated School.  After graduating from high school, Rose Marie attended college where she took secretarial classes.  On July 16, 1948, Rose Marie was united in marriage to Donald “Don” Rears in Humboldt, Nebraska.  The couple raised three children, Shari, Donna and Ronald, on a farm four and a half miles west of Stella, Nebraska.  Rose Marie was a long-time member of the Humboldt Rebekah’s Crescent Lodge #100 where she served in many different capacities over the years. 

Rose Marie passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of ninety-one years, nine months and twenty days.  She was preceded in death by his parents, husband Don Rears, brothers: Paul (Margaret) Lewis, Harlan (Millie) Lewis, Tom Lewis, Donald (Pauline) Lewis and Gary Lewis, her sister Martha Lewis and brothers-in-law Jerry Mehlin and Dean Whitfield.

Dora was born April 9, 1918, in Milford, KS, the daughter of John William and Mary Florence (Kerby) Smith. She was an LPN for the Atchison Hospital from 1963 to 1982 and provided private duty nursing for over twenty years. Dora was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved taking care of people and kids. Dora also enjoyed canning.

Dora married Ivan Williams on March 5, 1938, he preceded her in death on February 25, 1984. Survivors include a son Bob and Joyce Williams, Atchison, KS, a daughter Jaquetta Peak, Huron, KS, five grandchildren, Douglas Peak, Vonda and Merrell Young, Daniel Peak, Rob and Kristy Williams and Julie Pennington, nine great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren and two step great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Kenneth Williams and siblings, George, Clyde, Thelma, Ray, Della, Dean, Mary, Roberta Smith.

Lawrence E. Thonen died at Maple Heights Nursing Home Friday evening, February 18, 2022. He was 93 years old. He had been a resident of home for the past 2 years. Two cats at the nursing home were his buddies.

Lawrence was born on the family farm just south of Powhattan to Jacob and Rosa Wenger Thonen, November 13, 1928, the third of six children. He grew up near Powhattan where he later graduated from Powhattan High School with the class of 1946.

He served in the Army, 82nd airborne division, Fort Bragg, N.C. during the Korean Conflict, discharged at the rank of corporal. He returned to Brown County and worked at various occupations in Hiawatha before starting work for the United States Postal Service, retiring after nearly 30 years of service.

Lawrence was always helping people. He loved collecting about anything. His favorite thing was license plates with his first plate coming from his Grandpa Sam Wenger. Therefore to say Lawrence has ended up with a large plate collection is an understatement! He loved working in his flower garden and enjoyed watching the birds at his feeders.

Lawrence married the love of his life, Donna Corbet on his birthday, November 13, 1955. This past November, they celebrated 66 years of marriage. Through the years, they took several cruises, bus trips and family vacations.

He was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha; Wenger Post #373, Powhattan American Legion; and ALPCA (Automobile License Plate Collectors Assn.). Lawrence was also a very dedicated member of the Brown County Historical Society where he spent countless hours volunteering.

Survivors of Lawrence include his wife, Donna, two daughters, Sherry (Alan) Ely and Sandy (Bob) Bowen, grandson, Tyler Thieme, sister, Mavis Geiger; sisters-in-law, Edna Mae Futscher and Vinita Thonen; also many nieces and nephews.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Edna Thonen, brothers: Norman, Melvin, and Alvin.

Kurt Sanner, 65, of Hamlin, passed away February 19, 2022.

Kurt was born January 21, 1957, the youngest of two sons born to Herb and Barbara Sweezy Sanner and had grown up at Hamlin where he attended grade school prior to graduating from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1975.

He was an over the road truck driver most of his life for various companies through the years. For a time, he worked for Soden Construction in Hiawatha before returning to driving, this time for Fairview Mills dogfood division, for the past 15 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, yelling at the Chiefs, and time with friends. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren.

Kurt married DeAun Allen in 1993. She survives at the home. Dora Mae Williams 103, of Atchison, KS, passed on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at the Atchison Senior Village.

Dora was born April 9, 1918, in Milford, KS, the daughter of John William and Mary Florence (Kerby) Smith.  She was an LPN for the Atchison Hospital from 1963 to 1982 and provided private duty nursing for over twenty years.  Dora was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  She loved taking care of people and kids.  Dora also enjoyed canning.

Dora married Ivan Williams on March 5, 1938, he preceded her in death on February 25, 1984.  Survivors include a son Bob and Joyce Williams, Atchison, KS, a daughter Jaquetta Peak, Huron, KS, five grandchildren, Douglas Peak, Vonda and Merrell Young, Daniel Peak, Rob and Kristy Williams and Julie Pennington, nine great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren and two step great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Kenneth Williams and siblings, George, Clyde, Thelma, Ray, Della, Dean, Mary, Roberta Smith.

Phillip Paul Hinton, age 79 of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday February 16th, 2022.  Phillip was born December 23, 1942 at the Horton, Kansas hospital.  His parents were Bruce Affleck Hinton and Marjorie Marcelle Forney Hinton who preceded him in death, along with his brothers, Brian Hinton, Robert ‘Bob’ Hinton, and sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Earl Twombly.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Barbara Gerlt Hinton; children Ted Hinton and wife Traci Moyer Hinton, Denise Hinton Sampson and husband Michael Sampson; sisters Marcia Hinton Schwartz and husband Hank, Elaine Hinton Schwartz and husband Ron, and sister-in-law Melissa (Robert) Hinton; brothers Jerry Hinton and wife Melanie, Roger Hinton and wife Karen, David Hinton and wife Suzy; grandchildren, Dillon Lee Sampson, Lindsay Abigail Hinton, and Elizabeth Evelyn Hinton; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Phillip graduated from Hamlin High School in 1960 and worked on the family farm and dairy.  A few years later, Barbara Lee Gerlt caught his eye on a hot summer afternoon at the Sun Springs Resort swimming pool.  The two started dating soon after and married the following summer.  The pair had two children, Theodore Bruce and Denise Evelyn.  Phillip pursued his passion for crop farming and bought some land on his own in the early 1960s, and began livestock operations including farrowing hogs, cow-calf pairs, and backgrounding feeder cattle in the 1970s and 1980s.  Phillip loved farming, seeing the corn grow from “knee high to an elephant’s eye”.  By the late 1980s he had amassed numerous landlords and owned several farms.  In the 1980s he organized the purchase of the Padonia Grain, Inc. elevator and was President of the Board of the newly formed Padonia Grain Farmers.  Shortly after, he was hired as the General Manager of Padonia Grain Farmers, where he managed the business for 22 years.  Upon selling the facilities that Padonia Grain Farmers owned to Ag Partners Cooperative, Phillip retired in 2006. 

In retirement he loved to spend time with his grandchildren, travel with his wife Barbara, invest in the stock market with his investment group friends, and run a grain cart for Jim and Lee Mueller during grain harvest.  When working for the Mueller operation he was known to coordinate the grain loading in the field, as he had a natural talent for logistics.  His true hobbies were farming, gardening, and watching Fox News.  He loved raising tomatoes in the summer, and the only thing that he enjoyed more than raising the tomatoes... was eating those fresh tomatoes!  Phillip’s favorite way to eat them was in a Bacon Tomato sandwich.  In the past 3 years, Phil enjoyed applying the practices of regenerative agriculture to his farm.  Phillip was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be truly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be held Sunday, February 20th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha from 2-4 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, February 21st at the Christ Lutheran Church in Falls City, Nebraska.

Eunice “Euni” Aline (Allen) Osburn, 100, of Sabetha, Kansas died on Monday, February 14, 2022 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Euni was born on a farm near Thurston, Nebraska on December 15, 1921, the fourth of thirteen children born to Seth Allen and Mable (Wilson) Allen. She graduated from Emerson High School in Emerson, Nebraska in 1939 and then attended Wayne State Teachers College. She taught in a “one room country school” in Walthill, Nebraska for three years before marrying Rolland “Ossie” Osburn on June 14, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona. Ossie and Euni enjoyed 59 wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with three children.

Throughout Euni and Ossie’s marriage, they lived in San Diego and Long Beach, California, and Thurston, Nebraska. Euni was a homemaker and also, worked 30 years for Bassett School District in California.

Even though she lived in California most of her life, her roots were in the Midwest. Euni enjoyed visiting her family in the Midwest several times a year. In 2017, Euni moved to Sabetha to live with her daughter, Gerry.

Euni came from a "musical family” and Euni was always playing an instrument. She played the guitar and sang with her brothers and sisters in the “Allen Family Band” and they played for dances, bowery's, and even a radio station. There was music at every gathering including the annual family reunions. She was definitely the "queen of karaoke."

Euni was the eternal optimist and there wasn't anything she wouldn't try. She was multi-talented in cooking, sewing, making curtains, upholstering furniture, laying carpet, painting, wallpapering, and even tiling bathroom walls!  In later years, she created “sports memorabilia quilts” from shirts and crocheted water bottle covers out of plastic bags. Euni’s family and friends were her pride and joy. She loved attending as many of their activities as possible and recognized them on their birthdays. She kept up-to-date with current events and adopted sports teams in Kansas which included the Royals, Chiefs, K-State, KU, and the local Sabetha teams.

Euni was preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Mable Allen; her husband, Rolland Osburn; her brothers, John, Donald, Harold, Roy, Dick, Lloyd, and Tom; and her sisters, Doris Moore, June Brown, Patsy Frommer, and Evelyn Allen.

Euni is survived by her two daughters, Gerry Hayden of Sabetha, Kansas and Sherry (Bud) Hayden of Valley Falls, Kansas; her son, Larry (Connie) Osburn of Bend, Oregon; her ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lois Kientz of Valley Falls, Kansas.

Clara Ellen (LaMiller) Coonce, 93, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born January 26, 1929 in Upsala Minnesota.   She was the fourth child born to Lester G and Rosa (Weick) LaMiller and was united in marriage to Robert Eugene Coonce Sr on June 9th, 1947.  Clara moved from Minnesota to the Falls City Nebraska area as a small child.  She attended schools in Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School.  A few years later, Clara graduated from cosmetology school.  Several years later she decided to attended community college where she studied hotel & restaurant management.  In addition to being a homemaker, Clara worked in a law office, was a beautician, and worked at the care facility in Humboldt.  Clara was always eager to expand her knowledge and took every opportunity to read educational materials.  She especially loved reading novels, but cookbooks ranked high on her list.  While most families bring T-shirts and ball caps back as travel gift, Clara’s family would bring her cookbooks from the area they were traveling. 

In her early years, Clara attend St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Falls City where she played the organ part-time.  After Bob’s release from the military, they moved to the Humboldt community and became members of Faith Lutheran Church. Clara was active in the church for many years where she played the piano and organ, sang in the adult choir, taught Sunday school and vacation bible school, was a member Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and participated in sewing quilts.  Clara enjoyed preparing and serving food at the Church’s ice cream socials and the soup suppers. 

Clara treasured her family and watching the “kids” grow.  She enjoyed gardening for fruit, vegetables, and flowers.  She spent many hours canning, making jelly, and baking.  In her spare time, you would find her sewing, quilting, embroidering, or crocheting.  Clara envied her mother’s ability to “tat” doilies which she couldn’t do.  She was the first to admit she could not master knitting.   In their early years, Clara and Bob relished the evenings when they could play cards with friends.  Clara absolutely loved watching the birds at the feeders and looked forward to each spring when the hummingbirds would return.  She spent many hours studying the Bible and in her later years looked forward to the homebound visits from the St. John’s Pastors in Topeka, Kansas.

Clara passed away peacefully on Monday, February 14th, 2022 with her children at her side.  Her death came just 19 days after her 93rd birthday.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert E Coonce Sr in 1997, son-in-law James L Ingwerson, sisters:  Lela Irene (LaMiller) Hardenberger, Olive Gertrude (LaMiller) Lauwers, Nettie LaMille and great-great- grandson Kaysen.

Clara is survived by her son Robert (Janet) Coonce Jr. Humboldt, NE; daughters: Rose Mary Ingwerson of Topeka KS; Renee (Matthew) Kimpston of Riverton IA; grandsons: Gene (Kristin) Ingwerson of Topeka KS; Pat (Valarie) Coonce of Beatrice NE; Jason (Carmen) Post of Lincoln NE; Emilie (William) Goering of Nebraska City, NE; John (Emily LaRock) Kimpston of Sidney IA; Mitchell Kimpston of Riverton IA; 18 great grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, many grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews, cousins, step-grandchildren: June Lambrecht & family, Mike Keeton & family, Shane Keeton & family, and friends.

Samra was born on October 8, 1965, in Granite City, IL the daughter of Sammie D. and Norma Jean (Leonard) Smith. She graduated from the Canfield High School in Canfield Ohio in 1983. She attended college for two years studying Communications in Portales, New Mexico. She had owned and operated a baby supply company named Growing Life.

Survivors include her mother, Norma Jean Smith, Paradise Lake, and a grandson, James Hendrickson, Albuquerque, NM. Her father, and a son, Ryan Hendrickson preceded her in death.

Virginia Lynne (Nelson) Purvis, 64, of Holton, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022 at her home with her daughter by her side.

She was born August 11, 1957 in Macon, Georgia, the daughter of Ron and Betty (Boutwell) Nelson.  She attended Holton schools.

Lynne worked at the Dolly Madison Company in Emporia, and most recently was a custodian for Jackson Heights School.  She loved her job at Jackson Heights, and especially enjoyed all the children.

She was married and divorced several times.  First to Dean Nott, then Rod Kirk, and later to Terry Purvis.

Lynne was preceded in death by her parents and companion, Bruce E. Bryant.

Survivors include a daughter, Mandy Nott; her step-father, Harold Zibell; one brother, Mark Nelson (Linda); three sisters, Lorrie Shupe Whitten (Lynn), Karen Carl (Joe) and Donna Schumann (Dan); four grandchildren, Shaniece (Arturo), Kecia (Jed), Blaine and Auston, one great granddaughter, Anastasya LeeAnn and three on the way, Ava Lynn, Ivy Lauren and Zaramae Antonia.

Edwin “Ed” Arnold Althouse, 58, of Colorado Springs, Colorado died unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at his home.

Ed was born on June 6, 1963, at Axtell, Kansas the son of Emmett “Arnold” Althouse and Mary Ann (Eisenbarth) Althouse.

Ed attended school in Sabetha and Seneca, Kansas.  When he was 19, Ed was involved in an accident that left him paralyzed.  However, this accident did not define Ed and he continued to live a full life.  His two favorite hobbies were cars and racing.

Because of these hobbies, Ed purchased a 1963 Nova.  On the weekends, Ed and his brother-in-law, Kevin, enjoyed participating in drag racing.  Later, he purchased a 1955 Chevy which was his “show” car.  Ed won many awards at car shows with his beloved Chevy.  In 2004, Ed moved to Colorado.  Ed will be remembered for his love of classic cars, auto racing, and cruising through the beautiful Colorado Mountains.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Pat Althouse; and a sister, Jennifer Althouse.

He is survived by two brothers, Mike (Yvonne) Althouse of Sabetha, Kansas and Tim (Melissa) Althouse of Fairview, Kansas; and two sisters, Janet Boehmer of Sabetha, Kansas and Joyce (Kevin) Boeckman of Goff, Kansas.

Lawrence F. “Larry” Dalinghaus, 78, of Seneca, died on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Life Care Center in Seneca.

Larry was born on September 6, 1943 in Axtell, Kansas, the son of Aloysius H. and Helene Kohake Dalinghaus. He attended school at B & B Grade School and graduated High School with the Class of 1961. During his high school years, he helped on the family farm and shortly after his graduation, he started farming on his own south of Baileyville.

On November 21, 1964 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Koch at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. The couple later were divorced.  On February 25, 1995, he married Deanna “Kay” Roderick in Topeka; the couple celebrated seven years of marriage before her death.  

In 1986, he moved to Topeka and was employed by Meier’s Ready Mix and Singer Excavation Corporation as a heavy equipment operator. After he retired due to declining health, he moved to Seneca to be near his children.

He was a faithful member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 101 in Topeka.

Larry was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey on December 24, 1997; a daughter, Jackie Kroemer on January 11, 2017; parents, Aloysius on July 6, 1960 and Helene on November 19, 2013; his brother, Richard Dalinghaus on November 13, 2010; and his wife, Kay on August 8, 2002.

Larry is survived by his children, Julie (Lynn) Kohake of Seneca and Jason (Lacey) Dalinghaus of Seneca; siblings, Rita (John) Gahagan of Benton, KS, Eugene (Marietta) Dalinghaus of Baileyville and Joan (Gary) Wadley of Topeka; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM, on Friday, February 18th  at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Funeral services will be on February 19, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery next to his children, Jeffrey and Jackie. The dress is casual!

Donna Lou (Fairbanks) Harmon, 89, of rural Dawson was born on December 22, 1932, in Rock Port, Missouri to Harry and Cleo (Neff) Fairbanks. On September 5, 1953, Donna was united in marriage to Kenneth Harmon in Hiawatha, Kansas.  To this union four children, Gail, Tony, Jill and Cindy were born.  The couple began their marriage living in Nebraska where Kenneth worked construction and later owned his own mechanic shop.  They moved for a short time to Texas before moving to Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The couple returned to the farm near Dawson in 1990 where Donna worked as a medical transcriber for Dr. Tramp’s office in Falls City. 

Donna passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the Falls City Care Center in Falls City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of 89 years, 1 month and 19 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, grandson Kenneth Bratcher and son-in-law Kent Bailey.  

Donna is survived by her children: Gail Harmon of Burnet, TX; Tony Harmon of rural Dawson, NE; Jill Bratcher of Wakefield, KS; Cindy Bailey of Burnet, TX; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Larry Harmon and wife Judy of rural Dawson, NE; sister-in-law Peggy Sue Harmon of Falls City, NE; special friends Janie Roddy of Burnet, TX; Rick Karas of rural Dawson, NE; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mildred M. Haverkamp, 89, of Seneca, Kansas, died on Friday, February 11, 2022 at Life Care Center in Seneca.

Mildred was the only child of Vincent John and Ernestine Mary Dalsing; she was born on January 21, 1933 on a farm near Kelly, Kansas.  She attended St. Bede’s Catholic Grade School through the 10th grade. She was a dedicated daughter and helped her parents on the farm until the day she got married.

On February 11, 1958 she married Vernus E. Haverkamp at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.  The couple made their home on the Haverkamp homestead, where both lived until their deaths. Vernus’s great-grandfather, Henry Haverkamp first homesteaded the property; making Vernus and Mildred the fourth generation to live and work the farm. The couple celebrated 58 years of marriage before Vernus’s death on March 16, 2016.

Mildred was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the Altar Society.  She was not afraid of hard work, and he took great pride polishing her hardwood floors to make them shine.  She loved to raise chickens, something she did until the end; she also loved to have a big garden and can her own produce.  She was a wonderful cook, seamstress and gardener. She enjoyed collecting dolls and making flower arrangements for special occasions for other people.

She is survived by her sons, Lynn (Sandy) Haverkamp of Home, Kansas, Wayne Haverkamp of Lawrence, Kansas, Arlen Haverkamp and Glen (Kandy) Haverkamp both of Seneca, Kansas; a brother-in-law, Cletus Haverkamp of Corning; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Jeremiah Joseph Haverkamp on May 3, 1987.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Leroy Edward Meyer, 82, of Bern, Kansas died on Friday, February, 11, 2022 at the Sabetha Community Hospital in Sabetha, Kansas.  

Leroy was born on March 24, 1939 to Leroy Meyer, Sr. and Pearl (Streit) Meyer in Bern, Kansas. He attended Union Grade School and graduated from the Bern High School in 1958.  After high school, Leroy was active in the National Guard and served his country for six years.

Leroy also served many years as a Washington Township Trustee and maintained the local Bern township roads.  In addition, Leroy spent his life as a grain and livestock farmer.  In his later years, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their various activities, welding around the farm, fixing anything that didn’t work quite right, and hauling grain from the local elevators to area grain terminals.

Leroy married Helen Ruth Menold on February 24, 1962. They committed their lives to Christ and were baptized in 1974. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on February 24, 2022.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother James Meyer.

Leroy is survived by his wife, Helen, of the home; his two sons, Duane (Holly) of Bern, and Jeri (Darcy) of St. George, Kansas; his three brothers, Virgil Meyer of Sabetha, Earl Meyer, and Keith Meyer both of Bern; his two sisters, Rowena Kaster and K’Lynne Gugelman both of Bern; his six grandchildren; and his ten great-grandchildren.  

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bern Apostolic Christian Church. Marion was born October 4, 1930, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Fred and Violet (Carlson) Martin. She worked as a receptionist for Radke Orthodontist and was a bookkeeper for George Diebolt’s, and Mary Carol Garrity at Nell Hills, along with a helper at the Atchison YMCA. Marion was a member of the First Christian Church where she was very involved in the choir and helping with events and funeral dinners, a tireless volunteer in the life of the church. Marion was an avid sports watcher, especially for the K-State Wildcats, KC Royals and Chiefs. Marion married Delbert “Dub” Ehret on June 6, 1950; he preceded her in death on November 14, 2019.

Survivors include a son Martin and Leslie Ehret, Wichita, KS, Sara Laurie, Atchison, KS, Nancy and Timothy Beattie, Olathe, KS, a brother John and Phyllis Martin Deephaven, MN, grandchildren, Beth Galley, Paul Ehret, Megan Day, Bree Ederer, Lindsay Thomas, Whitney Ehret, Brooke Genail, Allison Laurie, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was also preceded by her parents, a daughter, Deborah Ehret-Reyes and a sister, Marjorie Wheeler

Lloyd Galen "Et nwe tek" Potts was born 6-6-1948 in Horton, Kansas and passed into Glory on February 9, 2022 in Oklahoma City, OK. He was known as: "Et nwe tek", Brother Potts, Pink, LG, Papa, Shisheh, Uncle, and Dad.         

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard Leo and Coralene (Keesis) Potts; maternal grandparents, Jesse and Dora Keesis; paternal grandparents, Joe Bill and Rosan Lasley Koye Potts; 2 brothers, Vernon "Shkomak" Potts and Norman Potts; sister, Barbara Tims and 2 sons, Roger and Danny Johnson. 

Survivors include: his wife, Peggy Johnson of the home; his mother, Venida Chenault, Lawrence, KS; 3 sons, Marland Ray Potts (Shelia) of Tama, IA, Terry Johnson (Barbara) and Larry Berryhill, both of Oklahoma City, OK; 3 daughters, Deana Shelley Kapayou of Tama, IA, LaDonna Marie Garcia-DeLeon of  Toledo, IA and Loana Skalla (David) of Oklahoma, City, OK; brother, Mr. Ed Potts (Shirley) of Mayetta, KS; 3  sisters, Voncile Mitchell  of Mayetta, KS, Doris Potts-Zyganiuk  (Alexander) of Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada and Gloria June Keesis, dear older sister who stood by Lloyd throughout their past 70+ years together - mostly in Oklahoma City, OK; 26 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

 He was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and a member of the Potawatomi Pentecostal Church.  

 Lloyd attended Powhattan Grade School and Pawnee Indian Boarding School. He worked in construction and heavy equipment operations and was disabled in a dozer accident.  

He played in and coached men’s and youth softball teams and loved teaching.  He loved hunting and taking his nieces and nephews fishing and noodling in local ponds - no matter the weather - and mushroom hunting. He was a shade-tree mechanic, loved to cook, and counseling on softball, life, and The Word of God. Lloyd was a people person, he loved visiting and attending church and revivals.

Rebecca Louise Gann, 47, of Atchison, KS, passed away on February 5, 2022, at Mosaic Life Care.

Rebecca was born on August 14, 1974, in Atchison, KS, to Ricky McHaley and Cindy Whaley. She attended Atchison High School and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for many years before becoming a homemaker.

Rebecca was married to her husband Scott Gann on August 30, 1990. Scott and Rebecca had five children together, and Rebecca always said she wanted twenty-five grandchildren to expand her loving family. Those close to Rebecca would describe her as strong-willed, big-hearted, and the rock of her family. Family was the centerpiece of her life, and together with Scott, she raised kind, compassionate, and headstrong children.

She loved crystals, connecting with nature, gardening with her husband, and planning events for her family to gather together. Rebecca enjoyed riding on the back of Scott’s motorcycle and had plans to travel across the United States in a refurbished RV, one of her many dream projects. She could often be found cooking meals for large gatherings, listening to her favorite songs, and sitting outside when the weather was nice. Rebecca would help anyone in need and was the protector of her family – her family knows that she will continue to protect those she loved and bless them for all time.

Rebecca is survived by her loving husband Scott Gann; her children Scott Allen Jr., Bristal Louise, River Eugene, Savannah Ann, and Autumn Rain; grandchildren Gaige Lee, Carter Allen, Cash Louis, Dexter Elrie, and Kenna Louise; her mother Cindy and father Ricky; four sisters Wendy, Angela, Linda, and Elizabeth; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Rebecca’s Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Arensberg Pruett Funeral Home in Atchison, KS. Family and friends are encouraged to join the family in celebrating Rebecca’s loving, beautiful spirit. Gene F. Bernasek, 93, of Marysville, KS, died February 11, 2022, at Cambridge Place in Marysville.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 14, at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Axtell.

Joseph Gordon Middleton, 82, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022 after a short stay at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kansas.

He was born on October 5, 1939 in Belton, Missouri the son of Joseph G. and Frances May Lewis Middleton Sr. After his service in the U.S. Air Force he began his career in law in enforcement. He worked for various police departments including the Overland Park Police Department, Humbolt, Iowa Police Department, Chief of Police at the Horton Police Department, Chief of the Kickapoo Police Department and the Washburn University Police Department. He then worked for the security department at the Sac-N-Fox Casino before he retired. Joe enjoyed remodeling houses and spending his spare time with his family. He married the love of his life, Judith E. Piper on January 16, 1958 in Horton, Kansas. She just recently preceded him in death on January 13, 2022.

Survivors include a daughter, Deanna (Kelly) Middleton-Frock of Humbolt, Iowa; three sons, Joseph (Leta) Middleton III of Horton, Kansas, David (Janet) Middleton of Horton, Kansas and Daniel Middleton of Sioux City, Iowa; twenty three grandchildren and thirty eight great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

Betty L. Donaldson, 95, of Atchison, KS went to heaven on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the Atchison Senior Village surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born on June 9, 1926, in Atchison, KS the daughter of Kenneth and Pearl (See) Keithline. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1944. She was married to George Wm. “Bill” Donaldson on July 9, 1944, in Troy, KS. Mr. Donaldson preceded her in death on April 23, 2015. She was a homemaker and housewife. Betty was a member of the First Christian Church where she served as a Deacon, Elder, Chairperson of Outreach, was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, Worship Committee, the Christian Women’s Association, and the Independence Valley Club. She enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles, reading, raising flowers in her garden, dogs, birds, fishing and dancing with her husband.

Survivors include two sons Dennis (Monica) Donaldson, Atchison, KS and Pat (Patty) Donaldson, Effingham, KS, five grandchildren Brent (Ticia) Donaldson, Eric (Lorrie) Donaldson, Erica (Rob) Bradshaw, Natalie (Scott) Hayes, and Amanda (John) Schermetzler, eight great grandchildren; Cole, Ella, Holt, Nicholas, Alexis, Olivia, Ava, and Emma and two step great grandchildren Blayke (Brycen) & Riley and two dear friends Carolyn Campbell and Vi Garvin. Her parents, husband, and a sister, Kay Lauck preceded her in death.

Linda Curless, 71, of Hiawatha, passed away peacefully February 8. 2022,  at Highland Care Center where she has been a resident for the past 10 years.

Linda was born at Garden City, KS, next to the oldest born to Alva LeRoy “Roy” and Elizabeth “Betty” Arnold Spicer.  When she was young, the family moved to the Hiawatha area to assist in the care of Roy’s mother.  Linda grew up here where she attended Hiawatha schools, graduating from Hiawatha High School in 1969 prior to attending Miltonvale Wesleyan College where she studied law.  To say Linda had a strong work ethic, was vastly understated! Just about her entire life she held down two jobs, working one then the other.  She worked in the kitchen at Maple Heights Nursing Home when Matt was young, folded and carried papers, made donuts at Casey’s , and as an aide for home health.  Most of her ‘full time’ jobs included 26 years at Flair Fold, and at Walmart a number of years before retiring.

When Linda had spare time, she enjoyed bowing.  Her and Elsie Guy traveled to several state championship tournaments through the years.

She married Roy “John” Curless, May 26, 1972, at the Wesleyan Church in Willis.  They made their home on the edge of Hiawatha where they raised their son Matthew.  He died July 14, 2008.

Survivors include her son Matt of Hiawatha; two brothers:  Bob Spicer and Jim Spicer, both of Hiawatha; 4 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Jane Stahl.

Brent Lewis Craft, 62, of Valley Falls, KS, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. He was born February 22, 1959, in Topeka, KS, the son of Charles Lewis and Jacqueline Joyce (Humphrey) Craft.

          Brent graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1977. He worked in auto parts management for Auto Zone and Advanced Auto, both in Topeka. He worked in management for many fast-food restaurants, including Long John Silver’s, Godfather’s Pizza and Burger King. Most recently, Brent worked for the State of Kansas in the Department of Revenue.

          He married Julie Louise Sands on September 19, 1980, in Oskaloosa, KS. They celebrated over 41 years of marriage.

          Survivors include his wife, Julie of the home; son, Chuck Craft (Calie) of Meriden, KS; 2 daughters, Maggie Giebler and Kate Craft both of Valley Falls, KS; 6 grandchildren, Cameron, Gavin, Jayden, Cale, Chris and Charley; nephew, Derrick Wilbur (Cait) of Yukon,OK and great-nephew, Ricky.

Melanie (Euler) Drake, 72, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Monday, February 7, 2022. 

Melanie was born on July 7, 1949 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Everett Sr. and Gladys (Weigant) Euler.  She was a lifelong resident of Wathena.  Melanie started her teaching career at Wathena High School, then taught for Bode Middle School for over 25 years. After retiring she taught part time for Riverside schools in Elwood. 

Melanie married Jim Drake on August 24, 1968 in Wathena, Kansas. He survives of the home.  She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers; Jack and Everett Jr. Euler, sister, Maxine Sklenar, a niece, Kim Euler and a nephew, Brian Reipen. 

Additional survivors include her children; Brad Drake (Sheena), grandchildren, Ashton and Lauren Drake.

Ruby was born on January 8, 1923, in Denton, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond and Nora (Justice) Endicott. Ruby was a graduate of ACCHS in 1941; she helped during World War II helping to build airplanes. She married Melvin M. Garrison on June 11, 1946 in Leavenworth, KS and he preceded her in death on November 4, 1983. She was a member of United Methodist Church and socialized at Project Concern for twenty-five years. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, fishing, mushroom hunting, raising flowers and reading.
Ruby is survived by her son; John (Gwen) Garrison and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Son Richard Garrison, Brother Harold Endicott and Sister Reva Mah.

Larry Martindale, age 85, of Hiawatha, KS, went to be with the Lord, Monday, February 7, 2022, with his family by his side.

Larry was born July 7, 1936, to Harold and Bessie Schuler Martindale in Hiawatha.

On January 22, 1956, Larry was united into marriage with Leticia Blanton. The couple just recently celebrated their 66th anniversary! With this union they had four daughters: Kathy, Sherry, Karen and Lori.

Larry is survived by his wife Leticia of the home, Kathy (Daymon) Scriven of Springfield, MO, Sherry (Gil) Werner of Topeka, KS, Karen Martindale of Rulo, NE, Lori Martinson of Hiawatha, KS; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren plus 1 great-granddaughter on the way. Also surviving is a brother Donald Martindale (Ann) of Hiawatha.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Mary Lee Swank.

Larry enjoyed spending time with his family but his true love was fishing! You could always find him out at the Hiawatha Lake. He always kept the family entertained. Like never a dull moment. Dad you will greatly be missed.

She also attended Vocational Technical Schools in Atchison and Topeka, Kansas and the Ceta Program in Topeka, Kansas for clerical training.She and Herbert Richey, Jr. were united in marriage in 1957 in Atchison, Kansas; he preceded her in death. She and Mr. Donald Williams-Bey were later united in marriage; he preceded her in death.Mary Lou owned and operated Magic Fingers Sewing and Alterations in Atchison until her retirement in 1987. She formerly served as a nurse aide for Cray Senior Manor in Atchison, Kansas and St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas and other nursing homes in the Topeka area. She also worked at Horton Garment Company in Atchison and the Chicago Sun Times in Kewanee, Illinois.Mary Lou was a member of Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church in Atchison, Kansas where she formerly served as president of Women’s Missionary Society.

Survivors include a son, Steven C. Lee, Topeka, KS; four daughters, Penny L. Richey, Olathe, KS; Lisa A. Richey, Hiawatha, KS; Christina E. Eugene “Whitey” Taylor, age 91 of Auburn, passed away Monday, February 7, 2022, at Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn.

Gail Genene (Ankrom) Masonbrink, 82, of rural Humboldt, Nebraska was born on September 17, 1939, in rural Stella, Nebraska.  She was the first child and only daughter born to Lawrence and Wanda (Hall) Ankrom.  Gail attended grade school at Cloverdale country school and later graduated from Stella High School with the class of 1958.  After receiving a two-year teacher’s degree from Peru State College in 1960, she taught third grade at Cook, Nebraska for two years.  On October 12, 1962, Gail was united in marriage to her classmate and high school sweetheart John Jay Masonbrink at the United Methodist Church in Howe, Nebraska. The couple were married fifty-one and a half years before John’s passing in 2014.

Following John’s Air Force assignments, the couple lived in Gulfport, Mississippi, Blytheville, Arkansas and the island of Guam.  While living on Guam, Gail taught third grade for two years.  After returning home to Nebraska, Gail earned her Master’s Degree in Education and taught in the Falls City public school for many years until her retirement.  Gail and John were big supporters of the Brownville Village Theatre, the Brownville Concert Series and many of the events and activities in Brownville.

Gail passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of 82 years, 4 months and 20 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John in 2014, brothers Denny and Lynn Ankrom and brother-in-law Clarence Krofta.

Charles William “Charlie” Page, 103, of Olathe, KS formerly of Atchison, KS, died on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at the Advent Health, Shawnee Mission, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Greene officiating. Charlie was born on Nov. 5, 1918, in Rushville, MO the son of Jesse William and Geneva (Allison) Page. He graduated from Faucett High School in 1936 and served in the United States Army in World War II in five major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. Charlie worked for the Atchison County Co-op as the Fertilizer Plant Manager. He was a member of the First Christian Church, a former member of the VFW Post # 1175, and with his wife Ora Mae owned and operated Page’s Ceramic’s in Atchison. Charlie enjoyed fishing, hunting, animals, dog PJ and spending time with family.

He was married to Ora Mae Bradley on May 31, 1941, in Manhattan, KS. Mrs. Page preceded him in death on Jan.29, 2011. Survivors include a son Phillip (Linda) Page, Lee’s Summit, MO, a daughter Judy Clover, Olathe, KS, seven grandchildren Terry Kuhnert, Bradley Walker, Monica Hale, Jay, Aaron, Tyler & Lindsay Page, five great grandchildren, Alison, Rebekah Kuhnert, Bryce Oran, William Hale, and Natalya Davis, and one great granddaughter Carlee Paige Hurst. His parents, wife Ora Mae, a son Kenneth Page, a brother Marion Page and sister Ruth Farris preceded him in death.

Dena Marie Knobloch Weiss, 99, of Sabetha, Kansas died on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Dena was born on July 3, 1922 to Jacob and Lydia (Traub) Knobloch in rural Alvord, Iowa. She attended Logan Township #6 School and graduated from the school in 1936. She loved growing up on the family farm with her ten brothers and sisters.

In 1940, Dena moved to Elgin, Illinois and worked at the Elgin National Watch Company. She worked at this company until she married Calvin Carl Weiss on February 21, 1948. They shared 65 happy years together. Early in their marriage, they owned and operated the Morris B-B-Q. They raised their two children and lived in Elgin for 46 years. During that time, Dena enjoyed volunteering at their children’s school, World Relief, and the Apostolic Christian Highland Oaks Home. She also worked as an election judge.

Calvin and Dena were members of the Apostolic Christian Church in Elgin. In August, 1994, they moved to the Apostolic Christian Retirement-West Village in Sabetha, Kansas. The Sabetha Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha became their new church home. Dena also volunteered at the Apostolic Christian Home. During their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren.

Dena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Calvin; and her nine brothers and sisters.

Dena is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Scott) Samelson of Davenport, Iowa; her son Kurt (lori) Weiss of Melbourne, Florida; her three grandsons, Bret (Sachi) Samelson, Richard (Rebecca) Weiss, and Silas (Bethany) Weiss; and a brother, Dale Knobloch of Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 14, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha, Kansas. Ruby Elaine Garrison, 99, of Atchison, KS died at Friday, February 04, 2022, at Atchison Senior Village in Atchison, Kansas.

Ruby was born on January 8, 1923, in Denton, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond and Nora (Justice) Endicott. Ruby was a graduate of ACCHS in 1941; she helped during World War II helping to build airplanes. She married Melvin M. Garrison on June 11, 1946 in Leavenworth, KS and he preceded her in death on November 4, 1983. She was a member of United Methodist Church and socialized at Project Concern for twenty-five years. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, fishing, mushroom hunting, raising flowers and reading.

Ruby is survived by her son; John (Gwen) Garrison and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Son Richard Garrison, Brother Harold Endicott and Sister Reva Mah.

Michael “Mike” Joseph Sunnenberg, 72, of Sabetha, Kansas died Friday, January 14, 2022 at the Sabetha Community Hospital. 

Mike was born on February 12, 1949 at Axtell, Kansas the oldest son of Herman and Oscarine (Johnson) Sunnenberg.  He began his life on a farm south of Baileyville, Kansas and attended Baileyville schools.  When Mike was in the eighth grade, the family moved to a farm north of Axtell.  He graduated from Axtell High School in 1967.  He continued to help his dad farm until he joined the National Guard where he served for several years.    

Mike worked for the City of Axtell and also at the Log Cabin service station in Seneca, Kansas.  Then, he began his long time career in tire repair and automotive work at the Nemaha County Coop in Seneca, Kansas where he worked for 37 years before retiring.  After retirement, he worked part time as a custodian at the Sabetha Middle School.  Later, he began a new part time job at Garrett’s Country Mart in Sabetha where he worked until his death.

Mike was a hard worker and enjoyed visiting with people. His job at Sabetha Country Mart gave him the chance to meet and visit with many people.  He always had a smile and a joke to share.  Besides his job at Country Mart, he loved his farm.  He enjoyed tending to his flock of chickens and he always ensured that his animals were well cared for on the farm. 

On May 1, 1976, he married Kathryn “Sue” Miller and to this union one son, Skyler Michael Sunnenberg, was born.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Larry Hageman; and his father-in-law, Charles Miller.

Mike is survived by his wife, Sue, of the home in Sabetha, Kansas; a son, Skyler of Sabetha, Kansas; two grandchildren, John and Adalynn, who he loved very much and who were truly the light of his life; a brother, Bernie (Tami) Sunnenberg of Axtell, Kansas; three sisters, Elaine Hageman of Hoyt, Kansas, Virginia (Don) Nolte of Beattie, Kansas, and Donna (Steve) Fritz of Manhattan, Kansas.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha.  

Cora Lee Rahe, 84, Hiawatha, KS, passed away early Saturday morning, February 5, 2022, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City following a fall at her home.  Her family was at her side.

Cora Lee was born on August 3, 1937, at her family home in Enosdale, KS, to Thomas Ezekiel and Gladys Mae Lee Huffman.  She was one of ten children.  She spent her early years in Enosdale, beginning school there at a one-room school house.  Her father died when she was young and eventually her mother moved the family to nearby Washington, KS.  Cora Lee attended school at Washington, leaving school just before graduation due to a serious car accident.

She was a long-time member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha where she forged many friendships and worshipped regularly.  Cora Lee was a hard worker.  Throughout her life she worked many jobs: waitress, cook, donut maker, paper carrier, and factory worker. As she aged, she embarked on another career, cleaning houses and helping older people in the community stay in their homes by providing cleaning and errand services.  She loved helping people.  She held many jobs, but being a mom and grandma were the most important.  She enjoyed going to her kids', grandkids', and great-grandkids' activities; going out to eat at the casino; and working in her yard tending her flowers and lawn.  She had a lot of health setbacks in recent years, but as recently as last fall you could still find her happily working in her yard.  In earlier years, she loved riding bikes with her family, walking with her brother-in-law Reuben, and bowling on local bowling teams.  After she retired and had time to do so, she loved to read.  She would sit in the sun on her deck or by a sunny window inside and read for hours.  

Cora Lee brought joy to so many over the course of her life.  As a Gray Lady, she volunteered for years at a local nursing home calling numbers for BINGO weekly.  She was funny.  She was caring and loving.  She was a willing worker anytime help was needed.   Cora Lee spoke her mind.  She was a straight talker and you always knew where you stood with her.  She could, and might if provoked, cuss like a sailor.  She loved country music, especially George Jones and Conway Twitty. Her radio was always on and tuned to KNZA.  Saturday nights would find her staying up late to watch country music and polka dancing on TV.

She married Wilmer (Bill) Gene Rahe on February 18, 1961, in Linn, KS.  They lived in Washington County until they moved to Hiawatha in 1969.  Bill preceded her in death in August 2019.  

Cora Lee leaves behind a host of survivors to mourn her passing:  Children:  Brenda Rahe of Ramstein, Germany; Bill Rahe (Traci) of Morrill, KS; Bob Rahe (Wendy) of Hiawatha; Pam Twombly (Jerry) of Highland, KS; and Sandy Paden (Rodney) of Horton, KS. Grandchildren:  Taylor Rahe (Candice), Camryn Rahe, Aubrey Rahe, Kora Twombly, Kaley Twombly, Meranda Hoose (Chris), David Paden (Jessica), Katy Paden (Jared Pickman), Nick Meyer, and Colby Meyer; Great-grandchildren:  Waylon Rahe, Hadley Rahe, Carlee Paden, Amelia Paden, Everly Paden, Aidan Hoose, and Draven Hoose. Sisters:  Donis Woods of Taos, NM; Sharon Werner of Washington, KS; and Karen Hildebrandt of Rossville, KS, Sister-in-law:  Pauline Huffman of Marysville, KS. And a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Tommy Huffman; sisters, Betty Boerger, Doris Szopenske, Barbara Madsen, Janet Hollmann, and Mary Lou Huffman (in infancy).

A celebration of Cora Lee's life is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha, with Pastor Michael Dunaway officiating.  Lunch will follow in the church basement.  Cremation will follow services.  Private family inurnment will be at a later date at the Linn Cemetery.

Kevin Clyde Richey, 59, of Falls City, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, February 4, 2022, at University Medical Center in Omaha where he was admitted hours earlier.  He previously had been a resident at St. Joseph Towers in Omaha the last 5 months.

He was born June 20, 1962, at Box Butte County, Nebraska, and was adopted by Keith and Beverly Ann Barnes Richey and grew up in Falls City where he attended schools.

Kevin was a former member of the Falls City Christian Church.

In his later years, faith was very important to him by reading his Bible, listening and watching services on Sunday mornings.  Kevin liked to read and watch football especially the Minnesota Vikings, K.C. Chiefs, and Nebraska Huskers.

Kevin is survived by his sister BethAnne and her husband Paul Yoesel of Hiawatha, Uncle Kenneth Richey of Falls City, Nebraska, Aunt Connie and husband Roy Jimeson of Lincoln, Nebraska, and ten first cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gerald “Corky” Albright, 80, of Delia, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at his home.

He was born January 4, 1942 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Jerry and Virginia Hartman Albright. He graduated from Hoyt High School in 1960 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry at Kansas State University, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Corky had served in the Kansas Army National Guard.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at Mayetta, the Marianist Lay Community at the church, and a Charter Member of Mayetta Knights of Columbus Council No. 9535. Corky was inducted as a Kansas Master Farmer, class of 2005, and had served on the Jackson County Soil Conservation Board for twenty-one years. He was also a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, served on the Farm Bureau Board, the Jackson County Livestock Association, the Kansas Animal Health Board, Kansas Farm Management, and was a 4-H Club Leader for the Hoyt Livewires.

He married Jeri Morris on April 23, 1966 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Manhattan. She survives, of the home.

Corky was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Darrel Albright.

Other survivors include two sons, Martin Albright (Stephanie), Andover, and Scott Albright (Barb), Delia; two daughters, Amy Pruyser, Hoyt, and Kay Andler (Trent), Delia; two brothers, Bill Albright, Topeka and Steve Albright, Mayetta; two sisters, Debbie Simecka, Topeka and Mary Jo Peterson, Ottawa; an aunt, Helen Eakes, Topeka; and nine grandchildren, Erica, Emily, Garrett, Brett, Karlie, Blake, Raegan, Harper and Tate.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 10th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Private family burial will follow at the Walnut Hill Cemetery, north of Silver Lake. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt, followed by visitation until 8:00. Corky will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Rafael Ferry-Torres, 85, of Hiawatha KS passed away Friday morning February 4, 2022.

He was born in Ponce`, Puerto Rico June 25, 1936 to Rafael Ferris and Juanita Torres.

Ray graduated high school and joined the Air National Guard of Puerto Rico, was honorably discharged Aug. 26, 1954 and joined the United States Air Force. Medicine was his calling. He worked at the hospitals at Forbes and McConnell AFB. He was deployed to Korea two different times. He retired as a Senior Master Sargent Aug. 31, 1975, serving 22 years and 10 months.

While still in the service he enrolled in Wichita State University’s Physician’s Assistant Program and graduated in 1976.

He moved to Horton and worked with Dr. Wood and Dr. Francisco and later in Hiawatha with Dr. Searight until he retired.

While stationed at Forbes AFB he met Thelma (Irene) Watts. In Oct. 1956 they were married and that union lasted 65 years.

Ray is survived by his wife Irene (Hiawatha), three children, Debbie Estes(Terry), Shidler, OK, Becky Colhour (Randy), Salina, KS and Michael, Hiawatha, two grandsons Daniel Stiner, Douglass, KS, Brian Stiner (Missy), Wichita, KS, seven great grandchildren, two brothers, Enio and Ivan, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter Mindy Oaks.

Funeral Services are planned for 11 am, Wednesday February 9, 2022 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, KS. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services. Pastor Shane Spangler will officiate. Military honors a courtesy of Brown County Honor Guard.   There will be a private inurnment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson, KS.

Terry G. Tegtmeier, 83, of Seneca, KS passed away at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital on Thursday, February 3, 2022.  He was born on November 3, 1938 in Pawnee City, Nebraska, and was the only child of Henry Jr. (Hank) and Vada (Butler) Tegtmeier.

Terry began his first year of school in Ida Grove, Iowa, and then the family moved back to Kansas where he attended the country school, Union School #8, through the fifth grade, continued sixth through eighth grade in DuBois, Nebraska, and graduated from Bern High School in 1956.  

On January 25, 1959 he married Dana Strahm at Friedens United Church of Christ in rural Bern, Kansas.  They were blessed with four children: Clint, Sandra, Brenda, and Jill.

Terry was a lifelong farmer and rancher raising cattle, hogs and row crops on the same family farm where he grew up, on the Kansas/Nebraska border.  He began his cattle venture with his father, raising registered Angus cattle under the name Angus Acres, eventually continuing with his own cattle/farming operation throughout his adult life as Flying T Ranch.

 In his spare time, he enjoyed racing cars in the midget and stock car circuits, as well as growing his interest in aviation, particularly WW2-era aircraft, having ultimately received his FAA-certified pilot’s license at the age of 25.  Terry had a great love for flying his PA-18 Piper Super Cub and traveling to air shows, such as the Oshkosh air show in Wisconsin, which he frequented throughout his whole life. 

For those familiar with Terry, they would immediately recognize him as an outdoorsman, big-game hunter, and conservationist at heart.  Not only did he enter into an Alaskan hunting-guide and outfitting partnership guiding clients in hunting and fishing expeditions for six years, but he also hunted big game in Africa, New Zealand, Canada and many areas of the United States.  In fact, he was quite proud of his trophy room.

Terry was also passionate about his home and his community, serving on the State Bank of Bern Board of Directors for 34 years.  He also served on the church council of Friedens United Church of Christ, where he was a lifelong member.

He was an avid reader of safari, hunting, and aviation publications with an extensive home library.  As a lover of animals and wildlife, a dog was never far from his side.  He will be dearly missed by his current dog, Zip.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Hank (May 20, 1980) and Vada (December 24, 2009), and wife Dana of 42 years (February 3, 2001).

He is survived by his son Clint (Mary) Tegtmeier, and daughters, Sandy (Mark) Farwell, Brenda (Bob) Macke, and Jill (Omid) Alhosseini.  He has nine grandchildren, Jessica (Tegtmeier) Stallbaumer, David Tegtmeier, Eric Farwell, Jenna (Farwell) Loveall, Kelsey (Farwell) Unruh, Brandon Macke, Jamison Macke, Arman Alhosseini, and Arian Alhosseini and sixteen great-grandchildren, and partner Marnie Wipperman.

Visitation is Monday, February 7, 2022 from 5-7 P.M. at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, Kansas.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at 10:00 A.M.  at Friedens United Church of Christ, rural Bern, Kansas with interment following at the church cemetery.  A final flyover in Terry’s Super Cub by Daren Ronnebaum will complete the interment.  A luncheon will follow immediately at the DuBois Community Building.

Eugene Lyle “Gene” Dunn, 79, of Nortonville, KS, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.

Eugene was born July 15, 1942, in Atchison, KS, the son of Edgar and Inez (Stacey) Dunn.  Gene attended grade school in the area and graduated from ACCHS in Effingham, KS, in 1960.  Gene worked at Blish Mize in Atchison for a year after graduation and then engaged in farming for sixty years.  Everything he did centered around his family and farming.  Gene was a very active member of the Nortonville United Methodist Church where he was a trustee and chairman for several years.  Gene was also a member of the Atchison County Young Farmers and Lions Club.  He enjoyed collecting cars and antique John Deere Tractors.  Gene didn’t know a stranger and could talk to anyone and would do anything for anyone especially if you had pie and ice cream.  

Gene married Dorothy Driskell of Weston, MO, on September 23, 1961.  Gene is survived by his wife Dorothy of sixty years of the home. A son Greg Dunn, Effingham, KS and his partner Jeanette Whitney, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Suzi Akerley and her partner Mike LaCarrubba of Topsham, ME, grandchild, Katelyn Dunn, step grandchildren, Lukas and Elijah Akerley, two great grandchildren, Hudson Woods and Natalia Akerley, nieces Lainie Dunn Swendson and Stacy (JD) Shipman, great nephews, Cale and Trace Swendson, Tyler and Harrison Shipman.

He was preceded by his parents, a brother, Bob Dunn, a grandson, Kristopher Akerley and a nephew Corey Dunn and his mother Peggy Dunn.

Mr. Swordy preceded her in death on February 4, 1986. Patricia was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign War Post #1175 Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Atchison Elks Club. She enjoyed astrology, gardening, fishing and watching her humming birds.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Emery, Atchison, KS, two daughters, Vicky (Carl) Kiehl, Atchison, KS, Leslie (Ed McNiel) Wise, Raymore, MO, a brother, William Bewley, Atchison, KS, a sister Jo Stewart, Hutchinson, KS, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Swordy, two sisters, Peggy Wilburn, Louise Bewley, and two brothers, Raymond Bewley and Jim Bewley,

Robert Duane “Bob” Arnold, 73, of Circleville, KS, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022 at Onaga Hospital (Community Healthcare System). He was born October 30, 1948 in Holton, KS, the son of Wendal Clarence Arnold and Thelma “Maxine” (Wilkerson) Lewis.

Bob graduated from Circleville High School in 1966. He worked for the State of Kansas in the Maintenance Dept., Bill Gray Construction, HLX Trucking in Holton and Thompson Implement-John Deere also in Holton. He retired in 2003 from Goodyear Tire Company.

He was a member of Circleville Christian Church and charter member of Circleville Saddle Club.

Bob married Laura “Jeannie” Butler on April 5, 1970 in Circleville, KS. They celebrated over 51 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannie of the home; his mother, Maxine Lewis of Holton, KS; daughter, Lori Burdick of Circleville, KS; granddaughter, Bailey Burdick of Circleville, KS; brother, Merlin L. Arnold (Judy) of Holton, KS; 2 half- brothers, Tom Arnold (Ann) of Topeka, KS and Tim Arnold of Belton, MO and 3 half-sisters, Sue Bayless (Darrell) of Topeka, KS, Judy Menge (Joe) of Peculiar, MO and Jody Wilson (Rick) of Raymore, MO.

 He was preceded in death by his father, Wendal Arnold; a son, Randy Robert Arnold on June 19, 2002; granddaughter, Afton Burdick on February 17, 2017; infant brother, Randy Arnold; brother, Ricky J. Arnold and step-father, Bob Lewis.

Delbert R. Boatright, 73, lifelong Atchison resident, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, February 3, 2022, at his home in Atchison.

A memorial service will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the First Christian Church in Atchison with Rev. Brad Greene, officiating. Family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service on Thursday at the church. The family suggest memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. Cremation care is under the direction of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home.

Delbert was born in Atchison on December 14, 1948, the son of Charles and Mildred (White) Boatright. Following graduation from Atchison High School, Delbert served his country in the US Army and was honorably discharged in February 1973. Delbert worked for the Pillsbury Flour Mill plant in Atchison for 14 years and then went to work at the Lansing Correctional Facility as a Corrections Officer for 16 years, retiring in 2004. Delbert was a member of the First Christian Church of Atchison. He enjoyed photography, traveling and he and Diana traveled to many campgrounds throughout the years.

Delbert and Diana Wilburn were married on November 13, 2002, in Atchison.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Boatright, of the home; two daughters, Heather Jones, Atchison and Meghan Eyman, Mound City, MO; three stepsons, Barry (Dawn) White, Port Orchard, WA, Raymond (Shuntell) White, and Leland (Colleen) Spencer, Topeka, KS; brother, Gary Boatright, Muscotah; 8 grandchidren; 8 great grandchildren.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bob, Kenneth, Larry, Mike and Ed; sister, Earlene.

Leslie B. Domann, 88, Winchester, KS, passed away on Feb. 1, 2022 at V.A. Hospital, Leavenworth, KS.  He was born March 24, 1933, son of Ben & Genevieve (Cunningham) Domann.  Les grew up in the Mooney Creek area, south of Atchison, KS, and graduated from Maur Hill Prep for high school in Atchison, 1951.  Les served in the U.S. Army 1953-1955.

Les participated in professional baseball tryouts for the Kansas City A’s (Royals), and St. Louis Cardinals as a pitcher.  

Leslie and Alice A. Domann were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Potter, KS, February 5, 1959. They resided in the Mooney Creek area and were married 29 years.  Their children include Christopher (Beverly) Domann, Nortonville, KS; Craig (Teddi) Domann, Colorado Springs, CO; Sheila (James) Bishop, Radford, VA; and Angela (Scott) Bolduc of Olathe, KS. Grandchildren include grandsons; Kyle, Brandon, JoJo and Brock Domann and Jake Robohn, and granddaughters; Maggie (Robohn) Luckert, Megan (Domann) Mangrum, Rylee Domann and Emily Bolduc.  Family also includes step granddaughters Rachel (Bishop) Altizer and Grayce (Bishop) Woodrum, both of Christiansburg, VA.  Les has one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Luckert, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Les was active in the community, serving with Corpus Christi Catholic Church’s Knights of Columbus and Jefferson County Farm Bureau.  Les farmed with his father Ben, and brothers Charles and Robert.  He was a previous co-owner of West Lanes Bowl in Atchison and enjoyed bowling.  After farming, he was employed by Jefferson County Health Dept. for ten years.  
Les was known as an avid sports fan, especially for the KU Jayhawks, KC Royals and KC Chiefs.  He passionately followed his family’s school and sports activities and most recently cheered for grandsons playing football for Nebraska and Louisville.

Les was preceded in death by his parents Ben & Genevieve, brothers Charles, Donald & Robert Domann, and sisters Maxine Allen & infant Marie Merrill, brother-in-law Paul Allen, and sister-in-law Joan Domann. 
The family is very appreciative of care provided by V.A. Hospital, Prestige Home Care, F.W. Huston Medical Center, local Home Health agencies and many special care givers.  

Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Feb. 7, 2022 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Mooney Creek, located south of Atchison.  The visitation will begin at 9:30 am, rosary 10:30 am, Mass of Christian burial at 11 am and interment will follow at Corpus Christi Catholic Church cemetery.  Lunch will be served by the Corpus Christi Altar Society at the Nortonville Knights of Columbus Hall.  In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions to the Corpus Christi Catholic Church or the Church Building fund; and may be sent in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home,208 N. 5th St., Atchison, KS 66002.  

Wayne H. Keighley of rural Hiawatha, passed away peacefully at Atchison Amberwell Hospital in Atchison Kansas on January 22, 2022 at the age of 66. 

Wayne is survived by his greatest loves, his wife, Joan (Cook) Keighley; and his four children, Roy W. Keighley (Cindy); Sylvia M. Winsor (Nick); Sondra R. Selle; and Kendra J. Jordan. Siblings include a sister Janet Stout (Phil) of Aurora MO, four brothers; Robert of Kansas City, MO; Edward of Emporia, KS; John (Deborah) of Platte City, MO; and Steven (Debbie) of Corpus Christi, TX; thirteen grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Lela Eileen Keighley, brothers; William and Michael Keighley, his daughter Charlene K. Davis and a grandson Kendall R. Jordan.

Wayne was born on December 6, 1955 in Chanute, KS to Herbert and Lela Eileen Keighley. He grew up on a farm outside of Reading, Kansas. He attended Vo-Tech after High School. He worked as a mechanic for several years and then as a custodian at Horton High School retiring after 25 years.

On December 30, 1978 Wayne was united in marriage to Joan (Cook) Keighley (Old woman).  She was the love of his life and they made their home on seven acres in rural Reserve, KS. Wayne’s passions were Blacksmithing, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, KS with Pastor Jerry Petering and Wayne Shafer officiating.  

Family will receive friends Saturday February 12, 2022 at, Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, KS from 1 to 2 p.m.

Jack Walker, 75, of Falls City, NE, passed away February 2, 2022 at Falls City, NE. He was born on October 29, 1946 at Sabetha, KS to Cyril and Alva (Cummings) Walker.

He married Rita Rowell and February 14, 1986 at Las Vegas. She passed away October 10, 2001.

Jack enlisted in the U. S. Army on March 10, 1966 at Ft. Lewis, WA. He served a medic. He was honorably discharged on December 11, 1967 and then served in the U. S. Army Reserve until 1972.

Jack was raised south of Dawson, NE and graduated Dawson-Verdon High School in 1965. Following his discharge he returned to Falls City and moved to Omaha in 1974. He worked construction in and around Omaha until 2005 when he retired and moved back to Falls City. He was a life member of the VFW.

Jack is survived by his niece, Lisa Walker of Falls City, great-nieces, Bobbie Popejoy, Jackie Williams and Lindsay Inmon. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother.

Mr. Walker has been cremated and a graveside service will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022, 1:00 PM at Rulo Cemetery with Reverend Michael Brown officiating. Military Graveside Honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

 James DeVere “Jim” Jones, 78, of Corning, KS, formerly of Netawaka, KS, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at Holton Community Hospital with family by his side. He was born July 30, 1943 in Holton, KS, the son of Wayne DeVere and Lillie Belle (Beamer) Jones.

Jim graduated from Sabetha High School and Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and served in Germany, serving from 1967 – 1971. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and National Defense Medal.

 He worked for 30 years at the State of Kansas; retiring in 1997 as Director of Operations (a position appointed by the Governor) for the Highway Department. After retirement from the State of Kansas, Jim worked for 10 years at The Asphalt Pavement Association (KAPA) as Executive Director; retiring in March of 2010. During his time at KAPA, he was a member and board member of National Asphalt Payment Association (NAPA) and also worked with the Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA). He was a member and served at Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President and President (2009) of State Asphalt Pavement Association (SAPA).

Jim was a member of the Netawaka United Methodist Church, Wetmore American Legion Post 329 and Wetmore V.F.W. He was a member of National Society of Professional Engineers and Kansas Society of Professional Engineers. Jim was former Mayor of Netawaka for over 30 years.

He married Patsy J. Turner on December 22, 1967 at Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church in Topeka, KS. She preceded him in death on November 25, 2020; after celebrating over 53 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Lillie Jones;1 brother William ‘Bill” Jones and 2 sisters, Linda McCoy and Connie Niquette.

Survivors include his 2 sons, Jason D. Jones (Robyn) of Netawaka, KS and Travis J. Jones (Carolyn) of Corning, KS; 13 grandchildren, Amaris, Sadie, Tamra, Karly, Eve, Turner, Tyler, Amanda, Corey, Dalton, Devon, Addyson and Comyn and 1 great-grandson, Bronx; one sister in-law, Linda Jones of Topeka, KS; 2 brother in-laws, Raymond Niquette of Woonsocket, RI and Keith McCoy of Erie, KS.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Netawaka Cemetery. Marie C. Pupkes, 91, of Omaha, NE (formerly of Falls City, NE), passed away January 31, 2022 at Omaha. She was born April 16, 1930 at Falls City to Henry and Sophie (Schawang) Niemeyer.

She married Donald Prichard in 1949 and they were later divorced. She then married Ervin Pupkes on August 25, 1967 at Kansas City, MO. He passed away November 1, 2010.

Marie was raised at Falls City and graduated Falls City High School in 1947. She then attended Peru State Teachers College and then taught rural school near Rulo for two years. She then became a homemaker until taking employment with Falls City Nursing and Rehab, then Falls City Hospital and also worked for Drs. Farmer and Hines. In 1969 she became employed at First National Bank and eventually became the Vice President of the Accounting Department, retiring in 1986. She enjoyed gardening, wine making and supporting Sacred Hearth Athletics. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Altar Society, Sunshine Club and Legion of Mary.

Marie is survived by her children, Robert Prichard and his wife Janet of Pleasant Valley, MO, Thomas Prichard and his partner, Laura Chamberline of Olathe, KS, Paula Silverman and her husband Rick of Steamboat Springs, CO, William Prichard and his wife Patricia of Shelbyville, IL, Marta Sailors and her spouse Kim Pettegrew of Omaha, Dennis Prichard and his wife Pamela of Lincoln, NE, brother, Raymond Niemeyer and his wife Margaret of Falls City, eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter in infancy, sisters, Margaret Huppert and Mildred Fischer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rulo, NE with Father Lawrence Stoley as the presiding priest. Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited on Friday at 5:30 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

The family will greet friends following the rosary.

Mildred Josephine Mueting, 90, Axtell, died Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Life Care in Seneca.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, February 3, at Axtell Landreth Funeral Home, Axtell.  

A vigil service will be 7 p.m., Thursday, at St. Michaels Catholic Church, Axtell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Friday, February 4, at St. Michaels Catholic Church. Father Jim Shaughnessy will officiate.

Pallbearers are Scott Kramer, Brian Kramer, Doug Mueting, Justin Mueting, Byron Mueting, Kyle Mueting, Derek, Mueting and Stephen Mueting.

Mildred Skoch-Mueting was born May 11, 1931 to Venzle  and Rose (Haefele) Skoch. Following her mother’s death, she spent her childhood years with her Aunt and Uncle, John and Margaret Engelken and was later adopted as their daughter.

She first attended Saint Michael’s Elementary School, then later Baileyville Elementary and Baileyville High School, graduating in 1949. She rounded out her education when she graduated from Mount Saint Scholastica College in 1953. Upon graduation Mildred became a teacher in Germantown, Missouri and proudly became certified in both Missouri and Kansas. This led to her serving as a substitute teacher in Marshall and Nemaha County schools for 40 years.

Mildred and Hubert Mueting were married on June 13, 1953. Together they spent two years living in Kansas City, Kansas where Mildred worked as an auditor for Hallmark Cards, before moving to a farm north-east of Axtell in 1955- where they later raised their 4 children.

Throughout her life, Mildred spent much of her time in service to her family and others. She served as a member of the RCIS, Farmers Crop Insurance Alliance and an insurance agent for Cimarron and Blakeley Crop Insurance companies. Mildred was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic church in Axtell- serving as a Ladies Guild Officer, religious teacher and lay minister.

In 1999 Mildred fought and won a difficult battle with colon cancer. Her experience moved her to found the group known as Cancer Survivors of Axtell- where she worked in connection with the Relay for Life and American Cancer Society to bring support to those in the community facing their own illnesses.

Mildred lived a full life and could never be described as idle. She loved to travel and throughout her life she and Hubert visited 23 countries and all 50 states. Mildred loved to cook and was renowned for her kolaches. She also loved to spend her time playing the piano and crocheting- which yielded over 100 lap covers that she gifted to cancer patients or anyone who she thought needed a hug.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Hubert in 2014; sisters, Anna Marie Carrol and Thelma Key; and her brothers, Sylvester, Raymond, Robert and Paul Skoch.  She is survived by her four children and their spouses; Dale and his wife Sheila of Centralia, Duane and his wife Alison of Baileyville, Sharon and her husband Marvin Kramer of Marysville, Raymond and his wife Amy of Axtell, along with 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

James “Jim” Robert Bartlett, 69, of Atchison, KS, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the Lansing Care and Rehabilitation Center, Lansing, KS, surrounded by his family.

Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Jim was born on April 3, 1952, in Atchison, KS, the son of Robert and Laura “Peg” (Roe) Bartlett. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1970 and enlisted in the Navy, where he proudly served his country on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in Physical Education. Upon graduation he worked for Ryder Truck Rental and Motorola in Omaha, Nebraska until he returned to Atchison Kansas in 1984 to be near family and it was at that time, he began his career in teaching with USD 409 as a special education teacher above the Nies Furniture Store. He went on to earn his Masters degree in Special Education from Kansas State University and dedicated many years to Atchison High School until his retirement in May 2011. During his teaching career he coached football, basketball and track. Jim was very proud of the many years at Atchison High School and so loved all his fellow teachers, coaches and students he worked with throughout the years. It was his greatest passion to teach and coach. While growing up Jim was in Boy Scouts and earned the highest achievement of Eagle Scout and he was tapped into the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was very proud of both of these accomplishments.

Jim married Jane Ellerman on August 16, 1986, in Atchison, KS, she survives of the home. He is also survived by a daughter, Stephanie and Brian Drennon, Overland Park, KS, a son, William and Jill Bartlett, Atchison, KS, grandchildren; Logan, Parker, Greyson Drennon and William Bartlett, II, Jordy, Jessa Brooks, two brothers; Tom (Kim) Bartlett, Atchison, KS, Steve (Karen) Bartlett, Camden Point, MO, two sisters; Margo (David) Suhler, Severance, CO, Sandy (Mark) Dennis, Oakley, KS, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Bartlett.
