Lester “Gale” Rogers, 76, of Holton, KS, formerly of Effingham, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017 at Medicalodge Jackson County. He was born August 12, 1940 in Severance, KS, the son of Oren “Bud” and Betty (Foster) Rogers.
Gale graduated from Effingham High School in 1958 and later graduated from Highland Community College with an Associate’s Degree in business. Gale also graduated from Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, MT. He proudly served in the United States Navy as an air traffic controller during the Vietnam Era from 1960 – 1965. He was a policeman for Topeka and Lawrence Police Dept. from 1965 – 1968 and worked for many years as a mail carrier for Topeka and Lawrence Post Offices. Gale was also an Auctioneer Colonel working for over 1000 auctions. He was a member of the Oskaloosa Masonic Lodge #14 AF & AM.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Carrie Branson of Ozawkie, KS, Amy Rethman (Jarred) of Netawaka, KS and Angela Forshee (Chris) of Oskaloosa, KS; a sister, Mary Alice Domme of Sherman, TX and 6 grandchildren, Cole and Chase Branson, Logan and Kolby Rethman and Evan and Landon Forshee.
A Celebration of Life will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Friday morning. Mary Ellen (Page) Clay, Onaga, 91, entered eternal celebration with her Lord on June 17, 2017. She was born on February 13, 1926 to Eston and Rhoda (Hoffman) Page at Grove, Kansas just North of Silver Lake. She attended Rossville High School and moved to Topeka shortly afterwards.
She married the love of her life Calvin Clay on April 13, 1952 at Grove, Kansas. They were blessed with two sons William Ross Clay (Darlene),Yukon, Oklahoma and Robert Nathan Clay (Linda), Rogers, Arkansas and one daughter Daisy Marie Parker (Alexander), Berryton, Kansas. She greatly loved her five grandchildren; Page and Abby Parker, Teresa (Nicholas) Sweet and Michael (Sarah) Clay and David (Jenna) Clay they brought her great joy. She was blessed to have four great grandchildren Ava Clay, Griffin Clay and Reece and Sarabelle Sweet. Her family was one of the most important things in her life. She was very proud that all three of her children graduated College, an experience she had not had.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death, by her father and mother (Eston Page 1955 & Rhoda (Hoffman) Page 1965), one brother William 1969 and one sister Esther (Page) Knowlton 2006. Her beloved husband Calvin, aka Papa, preceded her in death on February 9, 2017 a little over four months prior to her. They are together again in eternity.
Mary Ellen worked for Hallmark Greeting Cards for five years in Topeka, Kansas until she married Calvin and moved to a farm six miles north ofOnaga, Kansas. They farmed together as a true team where they raised cattle and pigs. She also raised registered dogs (Collies, Boston Terriers and Miniature Schnauzers) for almost four decades. She was a true Famers wife helping with everything on the farm along with raising their three children. Mary Ellen enjoyed sewing and made at least a hundred blankets, or more, which she gave to family, friends and strangers. You knew you were loved when you received one of her blankets. She was highly involved in 4-H as a youth and with her daughter. She enjoyed numerous bus trips, activities and the lasting relationships she formed as a vital part that organization.
She was a wonderful mother with a strong spirit and an even stronger sense of family and God, which she passed unto her children along with an eye for a good bargain and the love of chocolate ice cream.
Mary Ellen spent the last eight years of her life at Eastridge Care facility in Centralia, Kansas, where she enjoyed a rousing game of bingo with anyone that would play. She graduated into eternity surrounded by her daughter and one granddaughter. Though she will be truly missed, we are all so glad she made it to heaven in time to spend Father’s Day with both her father and Papa. Blessed are those who are pure in heart, for they will see The Lord.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24th at the First Congregational Church, UCC in Onaga. Burial will follow in the Neuchatel Cemetery. Vernon Harold Finley 81, of Hiawatha, Ks went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 in Hiawatha, Ks. Vernon was born on May 27th, 1936 in Beloit, Ks the youngest of 4 children to Doris Mae (Shane) and Harold Arthur Finley.
Vernon married his high school sweetheart Louise Anna Fisher on June 19th, 1955 having 3 children: Ray, Barbara, and David. Vernon and Louise lived in Colorado while Vern worked as a telegrapher and then returned to Kansas where he worked for Kindel Electric, and drove a truck for Western Auto.
Accepting a call to the ministry in 1964, Vern was ordained into the American Baptist Church. He attended Friends University graduating in 1968 with a Bachelors’ Degree in Psychology. He then attended Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, KS graduating with a Master’s of Divinity Degree. In addition to his schooling and ministry work, Vern also spent time as a Store Owner for Western Auto, and drove a semi-truck for Hoffman Transfer. During his 35 years of ministry, he pastored 7 different churches across Kansas and Nebraska serving with a passion and love for the Lord and his people. Vern retired from full time ministry in 2004 but continued on an interim basis serving at 3 additional churches in Kansas.
Louise passed away in 1993 and Vern remarried to Mary Barben on April 8th, 1995. Mary brought 4 kids to this union: Sandra, Debra, DeeAnn, and Keith.
Vern treasured spending time with all his family and sharing his love of the outdoors. Many memorable times were shared through camping, fishing, boating, or gardening with family.
Vern is survived by his wife Mary, 7 kids: Ray (Theresa) Finley of Westmoreland, KS, Barbara (Kipp) Spier of Tecumseh, NE, David Finley of Sycamore, IL, Sandra Coine of San Diego, CA, , Debra (Dennis) Kirkendall of Falls City, NE, DeeAnn (Jared) Hinkle of Hiawatha, KS and Keith (Jennifer) Erdley of Hiawatha, KS as well as 19 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Preceded in death his parents Harold and Doris Finley, his 1st wife Louise Finley, sisters Marie Menhusen-Montgomery, Norma Kindel, Opal Bell Finley, daughter-in-law Marsha Finley
A Celebration of Vern’s life is planned for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hiawatha.
The family will meet with friends at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening.
Graveside services and internment are planned for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22, at Glenwood Cemetery, Glen Elder, KS.

Edmond Eugene “Gene” Rush, of Highland, KS died Friday afternoon, June 9th, 2017 at the age of 83. Gene was born August 15, 1934 on a small farm three miles east of Highland, the youngest son of Virgil and Ida (Ploeger) Rush. The Rush family were 5th generation farmers, Gene learned his way through his brothers and father. He grew up in Doniphan County and went to school at Severance. He graduated Severance High School in 1954 and joined the United States Army until 1956. Gene and Sally (Kerr) Rush married on April 19th, 1957 at the Severance Methodist Church. The couple were high school sweethearts and farmed all their married lives in Doniphan County where they also raised four children. In 1995, Gene and Sally moved to Highland, KS and opened The Meadowlark Bed and Breakfast where they enjoyed 20 years of hosting people from all over the country at their home. Gene was known for his kind demeanor and cheerful personality. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, working on equipment, caring for animals, and keeping up on current events. He liked to travel in his younger days and truly loved the landscapes of Alaska, where he was also stationed as a young man in the U.S. Army and enjoyed various fishing trips visiting Alaska. Gene loved to spend time on his farm with his sons and grandson working on his various projects, and taking care of the animals he acquired. He was a gentle man, generous and a lifelong learner; Gene cared for his wife, Sally, up until his death. Gene is survived by his sons; Paul and Karla Rush, of Highland; Tim and Sherri Rush of Wimberley, Texas; Mike and Tammy Rush, of Leona; a daughter; Julie Rush and her husband, Dale Tevebaugh, of Leavenworth; his grandchildren; Jackie Wilburn, of Prairie Village, KS and Stephanie Wilburn Lykins, of Lawrence, KS; Morgan Rush, of Kansas City, and Mason Rush and Brooklyn Rush, of Highland, his Sister-in-law; Shirley Silva, of Bela Horizonte, Brazil; numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He is preceded in death by his brothers; Joe Rush, Frank Rush, Hylen Rush, Harold Rush, George Rush and his sister; Audrey Roberts. A Celebration of Gene’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Highland United Methodist-Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Jerry Petering officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Severance. Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 10 a.m. Tuesday where the family will meet friends from 5 until 7 that evening. Sammy Joe Dunn, 84, of Highland, died Thursday evening, June 8, 2017, at his home. Sam was born at Highland, August 14, 1932, one of four sons born to Charles and Harriet Alverna Sechler Dunn and was a lifelong Highland resident. He attended Highland schools where he graduated high school with the class of 1950. He enlisted with the U.S. Navy where he served for three years, discharged in 1953, at the rank of E5. Sam returned to Highland, and, along with his brother Charles, purchased Dunn Oil Co from their Dad in 1952. They operated a service station and offered bulk petroleum products to farmers/businesses in the Doniphan County area for 35 years before retiring. Sam was a warm, kind, gentle man with a dry sense of humor. Every other Sunday when he wasn’t working, the family would go for a drive for good family time together. He was also a member of BPOE #1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge; and Dillon-Bales Post, Highland. Sam delivered Meals-on-Wheels in Highland for many years. He was married to Barbara Ryan-Titus, April 30, 1961, at Hiawatha. She died November 6, 1994. Sam was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Lloyd, Charles, and Jimmy. Survivors include two sons: Charles L. Dunn of Highland, David Dunn (Asmae) of Spring, TX; Step-children: Dennis Titus (Nanci) of Wichita, Carl Titus of Wichita, and Rachel Titus Durand (Phillip) of Shawnee, KS; 9 grandchildren: Tristan, Brett, Kaitlin, Chris, Dustin, Sami Jo, Amanda, Yasmine, and Nabilah. Funeral services are planned at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Highland, at 2 p.m. Monday, June 12, Jerry Petering will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 noon Sunday, where the family will meet with friends from 5 until 7 that afternoon. EVELYN LEWIS HOLTON- Evelyn Lewis, 90, of Holton, KS passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017 at The Pines in Holton. She was born March 6, 1927 in Everest, KS the daughter of Herbert and Sarah (Sawyer) Streeter. Evelyn graduated from Everest High School in 1945. She has lived all of her life in northeast Kansas. Evelyn was a homemaker and farmwife. She was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church, King’s Daughters Sunday School Class and Art and Home Club all in Holton. She married Gale Mellenbruch on May 15, 1945 in Everest; he preceded her in death on August 27, 1975. She married William “Buck” Lewis on September 23, 1982 in Seneca; he preceded her in death on April 30, 1994. Survivors include 2 sons, Loy Mellenbruch (Karen) of Holton, KS and Earl Mellenbruch (Lori) of Soldier, KS; 2 daughters, Janette Gill (Roger) of Wetmore, KS and Carol Gusenius (Bill) of Lindsborg, KS; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha.
