Johnny B. Ralston, 69, Atchison, Kansas died Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at his residence.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 12:00 Noon at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. A visitation with the family will be Wednesday, beginning at 11:00 A.M. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be left to Salvation Army or Tunnels to Towers and may be left in care of the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Leavenworth National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. following the service.
Johnny was born June 25, 1955, in Atchison, Kansas the son of Roy Ralston, II, and Violet (Cash) Ralston. He attended elementary school and Atchison High School.

He and Patricia Ann Gering were united in marriage on April 24, 1982, at St. Benedict Church in Atchison, Kansas.

He served with the United States Army serving in Germany and Florida till his honorable discharge and later joined the Kansas National Guard for twenty plus years being deployed overseas three different times, once to Germany in 2002 then to Iraq in 2005 and then to Kosovo in 2008.
In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and fishing with his children. In his younger years he played pool on Atchison teams and was regarded as one of the best players they had seen. Johnny especially loved seeing and playing with his grandchildren.

He was a great cook and bar-b-que specialist for his family and enjoyed spending time with his dog, Breena.
Johnny worked for Hundley Construction in Atchison for many years and then joined KC/St. Louis Carpenters Union #110 for several years and finished his career as a gate entrance security guard at Iatan Power Plant until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #1175.

Survivors include his wife Patricia "Patty" Ralston, Atchison, KS; two sons, Joshua (Jessica J.) Ralston, Dodge City, KS; William (Brenna) Ralston, Kansas City, MO; a daughter, Jessica A. Ralston, Centerton, Arkansas; three brothers, Joe (Judy) Tarwater, Leavenworth, KS; Roy Ralston, III, Kansas City MO; and Charles T. Ralston, Hot Springs, AR; two sisters, Sharon Tarwater, Leavenworth, KS; and Becky (Scott) Howarth, Creston, IA; and two grandchildren, Samuel Ralston and Madison Ralston.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Ralston, II; his mother, Violet Ralston Cash and stepfather George Cash and a brother, Donald Harris.

Maryln Christina Pederson Wenger, 87, of Powhattan Kansas passed away peacefully January 7, 2025 at her home in Derby Kansas. She was born April 4, 1937 at Horton Hospital to Charley Pederson and Verda Wilson Massey Pederson who lived and farmed near Baker Kansas.

She was married on March 15, 1958 to Gilbert J Wenger of Powhattan, son of Rudy and Josephine Troutt Wenger. He survives of the home.

Maryln had three siblings, Floyd Massey, Lozene Massey Aarstad, and Karen Pederson Madsen. They all preceded her in death.

Also surviving are her two children, Sandra K Wenger (Tammy Harrell) of Mulvane Kansas and David S Wenger of Henderson Nevada, two grandchildren and two Great grandchildren.

Maryln attended school at Baker Elementary and Powhattan High before graduating from Willis High School in 1955.

Maryln and her husband Gilbert enjoyed being very active in the Cloverleaf Swingers Square Dance Club of Manhattan Kansas from 1980 to 1996. They travelled extensively to attend square dancing events and conventions where they formed many lasting friendships.

Before they married, Gilbert served aboard the USS Silverstein (DE534) while in the US Navy. Maryln and Gilbert travelled the country attending reunions of the Silverstein vets, along with other DE ships and their veterans. Many lifelong friends were counted among their number.

Some of Maryln's other hobbies and interests included flower gardening and bird watching. The antics of hummingbirds provided her with many hours of enjoyment. She also enjoyed the company and companionship of a string of Miniature Schnauzers, Buffy, Mindy, and BayLee.

Maryln was a devoted wife and mother and loved her friends and family dearly.

A light lunch will be provided by the UMW at the Powhattan United Methodist Church, at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, with a graveside service to follow at approximately 2 p.m. at the Powhattan Cemetery.

Kathleen Ruth Botts, 85, Lenexa, Kansas, passed away on March 28, 2025.

Kathleen was born on January 11, 1940, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Glenn and Ruth Dunn Barb. She attended schools in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1958. She attended the University of Kansas, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, and graduated in 1962 with a degree in Spanish and secondary education. Kathleen received a master's degree in elementary education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She taught junior and senior high school Spanish in Roesland School District in Johnson County.

Kathleen married Jerry Botts on August 14, 1966, at First Christian Church in Bonner Springs, and they were married for 56 years. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2023. They resided in Shawnee until 1977, when the couple moved to Atchison, and Kathleen later moved to Lenexa.

She is survived by her daughter, Melanie (Ivano) Viola, of East Windsor, NJ, and son, Bryan (Midge) Botts, of Shawnee, and four grandchildren: Morgan and Mallory Botts, and Shen and Sukanya Viola.

Kathleen was a life member of Atchison Hospital Auxiliary and worked at the Atchison Hospital for 21 years as auxiliary director and in human resources, continuing education, marketing and public relations. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Atchison, where she served as deaconess, worship chairman and chair of the Outreach Committee. Kathleen was a member of Chapter FT of the P.E.O. sisterhood and a past member of the American Association of University Women.

Kathleen had a generous heart and a fun-loving spirit. She had many pursuits that brought her happiness over the years. She enjoyed being home with her children when they were young, and in later years shared a love of travel with Jerry. Their adventures took them to many parts of the U.S. and Asia, including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, as well as Australia. They also took cruises with college friends and a Caribbean cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary that included the whole family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, listening to jazz and classical music, shopping trips with friends, and reading.

Norbert J. Heinen, 92, passed away on March 28, 2025 at Crestview Nursing and Residential Living in Seneca surrounded by his family.

Norbert was born on January 7, 1933 to Clem and Agatha (Huerter) Heinen on a farm north of Kelly. He attended school in Kelly. Norbert knew early in his life that he wanted to farm. He spent his early years working in Topeka at the Meadow Gold Creamery. This job allowed him to save up some money to buy his first farm.

On September 3, 1962, Norbert married Jane Gudenkauf at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. They made their home on a farm by Kelly and built a life they loved filled with laughter and memories. They celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage together. The two were blessed with three children Scott, Marya and Glenn.

Norbert had a great love of farming and took great pride in planting and harvesting his fields. He could often be found cleaning and polishing his equipment and keeping everything in tip top shape. In addition to his love of farming and the land, he was most proud of his children and his grandchildren and would tell you that they were his greatest accomplishment.

Norbert was a man of deep faith. He was a member of St. Bede's Parish in Kelly, KS where he was a member of the St. Joseph's Society and regularly attended Mass.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Agatha Heinen; sisters, Helen Sack, Mildred Mathewson, Jeanette Heinen, and Alice Heinen.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane; children, Scott (Kaylene) of Seneca, Marya (Neal) of Bern, Glenn (Leah) of Seneca; as well as 4 granddaughters: Nyah, Kate, Adelaide and Marin, and 8 grandsons: Colton, Jake, Will, Dane, Isaac, Sullivan, Grant and Ian. He is also survived by his sisters Arlene Gudenkauf of Seneca and Dorothy (Bill) Eaton of Wamego.

Robert "Bob" William Keith Curfman, 79, formerly of Humboldt, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, in Kearney, Nebraska. He was born on October 22, 1945, in Hastings, Nebraska to Robert Keith and Mildred Marie (Bean) Curfman. Bob was raised in Harvard, Nebraska and attended Superior High School in Superior, Nebraska.

On March 9, 1964, Bob entered into active duty in the U.S. Army. He served his country during the Vietnam War until being honorably discharged on May 24, 1967. Bob was united in marriage to Kathy Jones in Kearney, Nebraska on May 12, 1986. The couple raised their family and made their home in Humboldt, Nebraska for many years. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing pool. He loved tinkering around in the garage and was known to help butcher animals for family and friends.

Bob is survived by his children: Scott Coe and wife Angie of Smyrna, TN; Dustin Curfman of Falls City, Michael Corliss and wife Jennifer of Kearney, NE; Susan Bohling and husband Mike of Humboldt, NE; Loni Shewey of Sabetha, KS; 18 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; his brother Jim Curfman and wife Joy of Kearney, NE; sisters: Nancy Gray of Aurora, NE; Kathy Wiseman and husband Don of Kearney, NE; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Shirley Ruth Fairfield, 94, of Seneca, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2025, at her apartment at Credo Assisted Living.

Shirley was born on July 24, 1930, on the family farm near Pawnee City, Nebraska, to Henry and Gertrude Freda (Bucher) Hess, Jr. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Pawnee High School in 1947. After graduation, Shirley taught at country schools in Pawnee County for two years before relocating to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she worked at the Elgin Clock and Watch Factory.

On December 16, 1951, Shirley married Donald Fairfield at Friedens United Church of Christ near Bern, Kansas. After their marriage, Donald served in the Korean War, and upon his return, the couple made their home west of Summerfield. They later moved to the Fairfield family farm, where they worked side by side and raised three children. After 35 years of marriage, Donald passed away on January 6, 1987, at the age of 58.

In 1989, Shirley moved to Seneca, Kansas, where she enjoyed her new home and cherished spending time with family and friends. Shirley was a faithful member of Friedens United Church of Christ.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents, Henry and Gertrude Hess; her sisters, Jane Bridgeman and Loree Farwell; and her brother, Larry Hess.

She is survived by her three children: Connie (John) Rundle of Lenexa, Kansas; Debra (Roger) Rochel of Tonganoxie, Kansas; and David (Carla) Fairfield of Waukee, Iowa. Shirley is also survived by her siblings: Ardyth Farwell of Humboldt, Nebraska; Carolyn Droge of DuBois, Nebraska; Donna Lantz of Austin, Texas; Judith Albers of Pawnee City, Nebraska; Lyle Hess of Pawnee City, Nebraska; and Diane Droge of Pawnee City, Nebraska. Additionally, Shirley leaves behind seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy.

The family will visit with friends from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The funeral service, officiated by Ken Tubbesing, will be held at 10:30 a.m.on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at Friedens United Church of Christ, north of Seneca. A lunch will follow the service . Burial will be at 2 P.M. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Axtell following the lunch.

Betty Joan (Pauly) Knecht, 83, passed away on March 5, 2025, in Topeka. She was born October 21, 1941, in Horton, Kansas, the daughter of Gerald B. and Helena K. (Gronniger) Pauly. She worked in the payroll departments of Armour & Co., St. Joseph, and Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Topeka. Betty married Fred W. Knecht, her high school sweetheart, on June 1, 1963, at St. Mary's Church, Purcell, Kansas. They were married for 61 years.

Betty was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary, where she was active in the Let's Help ministry and funeral dinners.

Even though Betty had been wheelchair-bound for 55 years, she was able to and enjoyed caring for her family and home, working in her flowers, boating with Fred, and spending time with friends.

Betty is survived by her husband, Fred, of the home, sons Michael (Carrie), Henderson, KY, and David (Shannon), Overland Park, KS; grandchildren Kaitie, Jake, Josh, Kelsey, and Madi; sisters Mary McCauley (Ken) and Kathy Albers (Danny), brother Bob Pauly and sisters-in-law Pat Pauly and Liz Pauly.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Gerald and Helena Pauly, and brothers Jim and Bill Pauly.

Barbara M. Deters, 84, of Baileyville, died on March 25, 2025, at Saint Luke's South Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas.

Barbara Mae Deters was born on October 3, 1940, in Frankfort, Kansas to Ralph W. and LaVerne E. (McBratney) Harter. She attended Centralia School and graduated from the 12th grade. She then attended nurse training for a year and a half at Stormont Vail. Upon meeting Leonard Deters at a dance in Baileyville, she gave up her schooling to become a dedicated farm wife, helping with the family farm alongside her husband and son, Neil.

On April 26, 1960, Barbara married Leonard J. Deters at the Sacred Heart Church, Baileyville. The couple made their home on the Deters' family farmstead south of Baileyville.

Barbara joined the Catholic Church prior to her marriage and was a true example of "living her faith." She taught CCD for 10 years, was Bible Study coordinator for 25 years, and a Eucharistic Minister for 20 years. She was also a member of the parish choir, quilting ladies, and the altar society taking her turn as president. Barbara was the 4-H Community Leader and a project leader for the Centralia Aces 4-H Club for several years and volunteered for the Nemaha County Fair Open Class after children were out of 4-H.

She enjoyed being with family and friends. She never knew a stranger and shared her compassionate heart with all she knew. Sewing, crafting, reading and puzzles filled any spare time she might have on the farm. Grandchildren and great grandchildren loved doing puzzles with her at family gatherings.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Deters, her parents and her brothers Richard and Duane Harter.

Survivors include Connie (Roy) Winkler of Kelly, Wanda (Bob) Sharon, of Kansas City, Kansas, Brenda (Kevin) Stephenson of Overland Park, Kansas, Mike (Barbara) Deters of Kansas City, Missouri and Neil Deters of the home; 11 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Robert Joseph Schrick, 88, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away surrounded by his family on March 23, 2025.

Robert was born on May 27, 1936, the son of Harry and Margaret (Noll) Schrick on a farm in Jefferson County. He was a graduate of Nortonville High School in 1954 and worked at the Corpstein Elevator in Nortonville. He married Therese (T.C.) Chmidling on August 27,1957 at St. Joseph's Church in Nortonville. In 1962, Bob and his brother-in-law, Lindell (Burr) Nolting, established the Nortonville Farmers Supply, which operated for 42 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 70 years, where he served on the finance council and was a member of the Knights of Columbus council. He served as state treasurer of the Lion's Club, on the board of the Winchester Hospital and as Scout Leader for several years. Bob moved to Topeka in January 2014 and became a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He loved the outdoors, including pheasant hunting, fishing, camping, boating and campfires with his children and grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his five children, Michael (Jane) Schrick, McKinney, TX, Daniel (Ann) Schrick, Sedwick, KS, C.J. (Susan) Schrick, Kansas City, MO, Rob (Lea Ann) Schrick, Pinehurst, NC, and daughter Mary Alice (Darin) Scheer, Topeka, KS, grandchildren Daniel (Curnutt), Jon, Elizabeth (Taylor), Matthew, Eliot, Stuart, Harris, McKenzie (Nelson), Madison, Marta Schrick, and Carson, Alexa, Cole and Ava Scheer, three great-grandchildren, and sisters Dorothy, Rosella, Sr. Mary Rae, Marian, Marcelline, Bernadine and brother Jim. He was preceded in death by his wife, Therese, sisters Louise Noll, Norma Minor, grandson Andrew Schrick, and his parents.

Robert "Bob" E. Berger, 68, of rural Humboldt, Nebraska was born on November 18, 1956, in Portage, Wisconsin to Elvin and Norma (Hernkind) Berger. He grew up on a dairy farm near Cambria, Wisconsin with his parents and older sister Sharon. Bob graduated from Cambria High School with the class of 1974. He continued working on the dairy farm alongside his father until his father's passing in 1977. Bob moved to Nebraska in 1981 to work for Mark Rippe dairy farm.

In November of 1981, Bob was united in marriage to Cathy Catlett at Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn, Nebraska. To this union two children, Raleigh George and Ginger Ellen. The couple later divorced. Bob was raised in a Wisconsin Synod household becoming a member of Trinity Lutheran in Auburn after his marriage. He later transferred his membership to St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church near Elk Creek. Bob worked various jobs in the area over the years. He worked for Missouri Beef in Rockport, Missouri, Kerford Limestone in Weeping Water, Martin-Marietta in Du Bois, and was a chicken hauler for MBA Poultry in Tecumseh. He later worked as an owner/operator for various trucking companies until retiring in 2024.

Bob was a true NFL football fan. He chose to go against the grain and root for the Chicago Bears opposed to his in-division, home state rivals the Green Bay Packers. Over the years living in Nebraska, he has learned to tolerate the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Bob passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Bryan LGH Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of 68 years, 4 months and 8 days. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister Sharon Wilkinson, and brother-in-law Roger Wilkinson.

Bob is survived by his children: Raleigh Berger of Humboldt, NE; Ginger Lamb and husband Donnie of Humboldt, NE; grandchildren: Drayven, Ayvalie, Emrie and Maxten Lamb all of Humboldt, NE; nephews: Larry Wilkinson, Greg (Jackie) Wilkinson, and Dan (Amber) Wilkinson all of Wisconsin, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church in rural Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Eric Spruth-Janssen officiating. Interment will immediately follow services at the St. James (Long Branch) Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2025, at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt, Nebraska.

A celebration of Brenden's life will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Cremation will follow services with private inurnment at a later date.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Friday where the family will meet from 5-7 that evening.

R. Keith Gilliland of Holton, KS, came to rest in the arms of his loving Savior on March 25, 2025.

Keith was born on April 8, 1936, in Holton, KS, the son of Roy Albert and Stella Tutt Gilliland. He grew up on the family dairy farm 7 miles north of Holton. Handsome, charismatic and unassuming, Keith was elected president of his senior class, graduating from Holton High School in 1954.

He began working at Goodyear in Topeka where he met the love of his life, Connie Cline. They married on August 4, 1956 and moved back to Holton where he ran the local Standard Oil service station. Standard Oil promoted Keith to a marketing and sales representative for Iowa where the family moved, first to Atlantic and then to Adair, where he operated one of the largest service stations on I-80. In 1978, the family moved back to Holton. Keith worked at Kansas State Bank in Holton for 20 years before retiring as Senior Vice President and serving on the board of directors.

Keith was a 35-year member of the Holton Lions Club, holding several offices. He was a member of the Evangel Methodist Church where he had served as treasurer and on the board of trustees. He also served on Jackson County Development, Inc. and the Holton Chamber of Commerce. He really enjoyed playing golf and was an active member of the Holton Country Club where he had many friends. In 2007, Keith was voted outstanding Holton High School Alumnus for his lifetime of involvement and contributions to the community.

The hobby Keith enjoyed most was singing, which came as a natural born talent without any formal training. While in high school he practiced singing in the family dairy barn, and also sang in church and in high school musicals. In 1957 he entered a televised talent show contest aired from Kansas City and won first place, earning him the $10,000 grand prize package consisting of a 1957 Studebaker Silver Hawk automobile and a handful of other prizes. Keith performed in community musicals and sang at many special events for churches, weddings, funerals and nursing homes in Holton, Topeka and in Iowa.

Keith's wife, family and faith were the most important things to him in life. He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth. He is survived by his wife Connie, son Bradley (Michele) Gilliland of Pleasant Hill, MO, daughter Joni (Dennis) White of Holton, son Jeffery (Peggy) Gilliland of Leavenworth, and sister-in-law Lydia, as well as 8 grandchildren: Joshua (Julie Gilliland, Nanci (Jacob) Kennedy, Joni Wardosky, Ragen (Byron) Dennis, Josiah (Audrey) Gilliland, Daniel Gilliland, Jenna (Austin) Manchion, and Kennedy (Cassidy) White, and 18 great grandchildren with another due in June.

Gertrude Hays, 94, of Falls City, NE, passed away March 19, 2025 at Falls City. She was born September 24, 1930 at Horton, KS to Charles and Ollie (Butler) Watson.

She married Duane C. Hays on December 19, 1975 at Hiawatha, KS. He passed away January 11, 2022.

Gertrude and Duane established their home in Horton, KS when married and moved to Falls City in 1996 and she has lived there since.

Gertrude is survived by the loving staff of Falls City Nursing and Rehab. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and a brother.

A graveside service for Gertrude and Duane will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Steele Cemetery.

Thomas John Ernzen, 89, of Waco, TX, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2025 in Corpus Christi, TX where he had been living with family. Tom was born October 10, 1935, the fourth child and middle son of 8 born to Frances Domann Ernzen and Felix Ernzen. He resided in Atchison County Kansas until 1968 when he married Janice Lee Turner at Sacred Heart Church in Leavenworth. It was a match made in heaven and they were happily married for 52 years until her death in 2020. They lived in Leavenworth and in 1982 moved to Waco, TX but he remained a Kansan at heart. Family was very important to him, and both he and Jan were very proud of their two sons, Brian and Brandon.

Tom graduated in 1953 from Atchison County Community High School where he was very active in school. He was elected class president for 2 years, was in the school play, participated in sports, and belonged to several clubs. His favorite subject was shop class. After graduation, he continued working on the farm where his brother Ron said he was the "go to person" to repair the farm equipment as he had an innate, uncanny ability to fix all things mechanical—he was "Mr. Fix It" from early on. He learned about farming, raising cattle and hogs, and operating construction equipment as a young man. All of these skills served him well later in life. When his father died in 1957, he and brothers Dan and Ron formed the Ernzen Farms partnership that continued until he seized the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of seeing the world, and that he did!

In 1972, Tom was employed by Slurry Seal, Inc. in Waco as an equipment designer. His strong work ethic, attention to detail, knowledge of mechanics, and the operation of heavy construction equipment all learned on the farm made him the success he was. His first assignment was in Kuwait in 1972, and before he retired in 2003, he had traveled to over 45 countries in Asia (mainly the Middle East and China), Europe, and North and South America primarily starting up emulsion plants and commissioning road-paving equipment. He was instrumental in the paving of the "Highway of Death" between Kuwait City and Basra, Iraq that was later used by Iraqi armored divisions for the 1990 invasion of Kuwait and later by the U.S. and British in the Gulf War. Slurry Seal, Inc. was sold several times and ultimately became part of AkzoNobel, a large multinational company. At his 25th year of service award presentation, he was recognized for having never taken a sick day in 25 years. While employed by AkzoNobel, he was one of 7 employees who were granted two U.S. patents in 2000 and 2001 for inventions related to "petroleum hydrocarbon in water colloidal dispersion". After his retirement, he continued in a consulting role.

Tom never lost his love of farming and retired on the small farm they owned in Texas where he raised cattle, had a hay field, and stayed busy working his mechanical magic on anything needing repair and also inventing and machining equipment parts. He was an excellent storyteller and on trips he made to Kansas to attend family functions he often told of the experiences he had overseas to a rapt audience. He also made trips to Kansas to visit his farming operations in both Atchison and Leavenworth counties. Tom was a strong proponent of soil conservation and received a "Soil Conservation Award" for work he'd had done on his land. Another achievement he was very proud of was making a solo flight in a Piper Colt. His other interests included stock investing, politics, and following world news. Also from teenage years on, he loved to fast dance to Rock and Roll and he was a showstopper! He was a devout, lifelong Catholic who attended mass regularly and whose faith was very important to him. He had a special place in his heart for the little country church of St. Patrick's which was his home parish growing up, as well as for the people of the parish and of the community at large where he continued to maintain friendships. He was a Knights of Columbus member for over 70 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jan who was the love of his life, his siblings Dan Ernzen, Dr. Marie Landwer, Ron Ernzen, and Rita Schuler. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Brian and Julie Ernzen of Waco, and Brandon and Nicole Ernzen of Corpus Christi, six grandchildren, Emma, Madison, Benjamin, Joshua, Mathias, and Aurora, and siblings Dorothy McDermed and Patsy Penning of Atchison, and Shirley Ernzen of Olathe.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Atchison, KS. Interment will follow in the St. Patrick's Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at 10:00 followed by a parish rosary at 10:45 prior to the funeral mass. Geraldine Avis Langston, 95, of Nortonville, KS, passed away Monday, March 24, 2025 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. She was born April 9, 1929 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of William Charles and Avis Eva (Fritz) Poyzer.

Geraldine graduated from Topeka High School. She worked for over 40 years at Santa Fe Railroad as a clerk in Topeka and Atchison.

She was a member of Rock Creek Bible Church, Helping Hands Humane Society and Topeka Public Library.

Geraldine married Donald Ernest Langston on May 30, 1987 in Silver Lake, KS. He preceded her in death on May 2, 2020; after 32 years of marriage.

Survivors include her step-son, Ronald Langston (Angie) of Nortonville, KS; 4 grandchildren, Melissa Langston, Justin Henning (Ashley), Staci Langston and Doug Langston and many great-grandchildren.

Theodore "Tim" Matthew Gronniger, 80, of Troy, Kansas passed away Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Abundant Acres in Savannah, Missouri.

Tim was born on June 15, 1944, in Leona, Kansas to August and Eugenie (Davignon) Gronniger.

He graduated from Troy High School and was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church, Troy, Kansas. Tim served in the U.S Army. He worked as a surveyor for Louis & Clark and Ben Williamson, was a mechanic for Gronniger Garage and retired from Altec as a Assembly Tech.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Henry Paul Gronniger, Joseph Henry Gronniger, and Olga Gronniger.

Marda C. Stuke Gudenkauf, 89, of Seneca, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Crestview Nursing and Residential Living in Seneca.

Marda was born on March 19, 1936, in Axtell, Kansas, to John and Julia Hickey Stuke. She grew up south of Baileyville and attended Baileyville Catholic Grade School before finishing her high school education at Sts. Peter and Paul High School in Seneca, where she graduated in 1954.

After high school, Marda moved to Topeka and worked briefly at Continental Shoe for just over a year, before returning to Seneca to care for her mother, who was dealing with health issues.

On September 15, 1956, Marda married Harry D. Gudenkauf at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. They initially lived in Seneca until 1971, when they moved to their farm north of Seneca, where they continued to build their life together.

Marda was a woman who thrived on staying busy. She owned and operated H & M Decorating on Main Street in Seneca from 1965 to 2003. After retiring, she embraced her role as a homemaker and spent her days baking bread and pies, tending to her beloved flower beds, and researching her Irish heritage. Her deep love for her family was evident in the time she devoted to them. Marda lead the rosary for the departed, a cherished ritual, as they entered the church for their funeral Mass.

Marda was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the St. Ann's Altar Society in Seneca.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Michael Stuke, and a sister, Mary Jo White.

She is survived by her husband Harry, and her children Mike (Karen) Gudenkauf of Seneca, Melinda (Bill) Sperfslage of Kelly and Doug Gudenkauf of Seneca, a sister Marian Haberline of Topeka and 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

David E. Yocum, 67, of Dawson, Nebraska was born on April 7, 1957, in Beloit, Kansas to Oliver Owen and Lois Maxine (Groves) Yocum. He received his schooling at Sabetha Public Schools and Honey Creek Public Schools south of Dawson, Nebraska. On June 5, 1976, Dave was united in marriage to Glendene "Glen" Curtis at Sycamore Springs Park near Sabetha, Kansas. To this union three children, Jessica, Danna, and Marcus were born. The couple moved to Dawson, Nebraska in 1977 after Dave was offered a job at Koch's Auto. He worked for Koch's Auto, Larry's Auto, and retired from Koch's Auto in 2021.

Dave was a gifted mechanic who seemed to be able to fix almost anything. He enjoyed collecting and assembling model cars and trucks, loved gardening and doing yardwork. But most of all, David loved and cherished his family, especially the times spent all together. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Dave passed away unexpectedly at his home in Dawson on Sunday, March 23, 2025, having reached the earthly age of sixty-seven years, eleven months, and sixteen days. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Alan, Grant and Johnny Yocum.

Michael "Mike" E. Richey, 60, of Sabetha, Kansas, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Mike was born on June 18, 1964, in Topeka Kansas. He was adopted by Kenneth E. and Barbara P. (Hards) Richey and grew up in Hiawatha, Kansas, and Falls City, Nebraska. A "Jack of All Trades," Mike had a passion for repairing things. Over the years, he owned several small businesses, including a motorcycle and auto repair shop, and a plumbing business.

On September 23, 1994, Mike married Diana (Workman) Richey, and they were blessed with two children. Following his marriage to Diana, he began working for the City of Sabetha, where he assisted with water and sewer line repairs, operated heavy machinery, and helped at the city power plant. Mike retired from the city in 2016 due to health issues.

In his spare time, Mike enjoyed riding motorcycles and building model trains and cars.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara; his paternal grandparents, John and Rose Richey; and his maternal grandparents, Harvey and Maude Hards.

Mike is survived by his wife, Diana, at their home in Sabetha; his four children, Crystal (Neil) Scrivens of Falls City, Nebraska, Tyler Richey of Auburn, Nebraska, Joseph Richey of Sabetha, and Kristina Richey of Sabetha; his nine grandchildren; his father, Kenneth of Falls City, and his sister, Kenna (John) Nixon of Falls City.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the United Brethren in Christ Church in Sabetha. Popkess Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Frances Christine Rottinghaus, 97, of Seneca, Kansas, died Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Crestview Manor care home in Seneca.

Frances was born on November 12, 1927, on a farm southeast of Kelly, KS, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Steinlage) Niehues. She grew up on that farm while attending St. Bede's Catholic School in Kelly and graduated from there in 1944. She attended Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, KS for one year. She then worked at Goff Bank in Goff, KS until she was married.

On October 14, 1948 she married Justin Rottinghaus at St. Bede's Church in Kelly, KS. They raised crops and livestock at their farm north of St. Benedict, KS. She was a homemaker and cared for her family while helping on the farm. She was a para-professional at USD 488 in Bern, KS for 2 years. She compassionately cared for Justin who became disabled following a stroke in 1985 until 2011 when he moved to the care home. Justin & Frances moved to Seneca in 1986 and in June 2020, Frances began living with her three daughters until she recently moved at the end of 2024 to Crestview Manor care home where she resided until her death. While living with her daughters, she became part of their worlds and was accepted and loved by all their friends.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca and formerly a member of St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict where she was a member/officer of the altar society.

Her joy in life came from spending time with her family and friends. She was always smiling and happy to see you. There was not a person who knew Frances who did not speak of her as a sweet, soft-spoken, caring and humble lady who always found the good in others. Everyone who knew her loved her, especially those who cared for her at the nursing home. She loved to help others and was always asking what she could do to pitch in even in her final years. Her hobbies included playing cards, square dancing, walking, reading, and watching the activities of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for her strong faith and was a devout servant of God. She faithfully prayed the Divine Mercy chaplet every day with her two sisters, Norbertine and Florence, prior to their deaths. After Norbertine passed, her daughter, June Bieri, prayed the chaplet with Frances.

While her cup was full in life, she really missed Justin and is certainly glad to be together with him again.

She was preceded in death by her husband on April 1, 2017; brothers Herbert and Ferdy Niehues; a two-year-old sister, Anita, Bernadine, Rita Niehues, Florence Hermesch and Norbertine Miller and son-in-law Larry Halley.

Survivors are her six children: Dianne Halley of Overland Park, KS; Terry (Peggy) Rottinghaus of Axtell, KS; Don (Sue) Rottinghaus of Raymond, NE; Betty (Don) Wessel of Paola, KS; Bob (Annette) Rottinghaus of Baileyville, KS; Jeanne (Judd) O'Connor of Adel, IA; 16 Grandchildren: Jason (Stephanie) Halley, Kristin (Tony) Halley Mana, Todd (Kristen) Rottinghaus, Joe (Molly) Rottinghaus, Renae (Heath) Rottinghaus Whitney, Trisha (Jaime) Rottinghaus Briggs, Brett (Hannah) Rottinghaus, Amber Wessel, Nichole (Eric) Wessel Harris, Travis (Sarah) Wessel, Laura (Nate) Rottinghaus Haverkamp, Amy (Jeff) Rottinghaus Heinen, Aaron (Nikki) Rottinghaus, Lucas O'Connor, Adam O'Connor and Kadin O'Connor; 32 Great-Grandchildren; and 1 Great-Great-Grandchild on the way.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Herbert on June 26, 2000 and Ferdinand "Ferdy" Henry Niehues, on July 6, 2016 ; a two-year-old sister, Anita, on August 27, 1934, Bernadine, on February 18, 2007, Rita Niehues, on June 16, 2007, Florence Hermesch on August 22, 2011 and Norbertine Miller and son-in-law Larry Halley.

Neil Eddie Caudle, 55, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, on the farm in Bendena, KS.

Neil was born November 17, 1969, to Roger and Donna (Ricklefs) Caudle in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was a lifelong resident of Bendena, KS. He grew up on the same farm where he raised his family in later years. He loved working the land and raising cattle. He attended Midway Denton High School, was an integral part of four state champion football teams, and graduated in May of 1988. After high school, he attended Kansas State University where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He took a semester off to custom harvest before graduating and completed his degree in Agronomy in December 1992.

It was at Kansas State where he met his wife, Mlle Brocaw. They married on July 10, 1993. They then moved to the Caudle Family farm where he took over operations. They raised their three children and resided on the farm until moving to town in 2021. He also served as Ag Rep and Director for the Bendena State Bank.

Neil's great love for Jesus gave him hope each day and got him through many tough years, especially throughout his 20 year battle with brain cancer. He was a lifelong member of the Troy Christian Church and served as an elder for many years. Neil's greatest joys in life were spending time with his wife, children and new grandchildren, as well as attending coffee club every morning and working on the farm alongside his son, Brandon and his trusted hired hand, Dan Earl.

He loved attending and watching K-State games and wearing purple. Neil was loved by many for his God-fearing, generous, kind hearted personality and infectious smile. He will be deeply missed.

Neil was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Dale and Lois Caudle and maternal grandparents Eddie and Alma Ricklefs and an infant brother (Brian).

He leaves behind his wife Mlle; three children, BreAnne (Jarrett) Pitman, Brandon (Chelsea) Caudle, and Calli (Alec) Richie; grandchildren Beckett Pitman, Nora Caudle, Drake Richie and baby Baylor Richie due in April; parents Roger and Donna; and two brothers, Jeff (Tracie), and Todd (Kamille) all of Atchison, KS, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at the Troy Christian Church in Troy, KS. Graveside service will follow at Moray Cemetery. Fayrene L. Kuker, 83, of Verdon, NE, passed away March 23, 2025 at Falls City. She was born August 1, 1941 at Kent, IA to Howard and Bernice (Keefer) Kessler.

She married Larry K. Kuker on August 23, 1969 at Omaha, NE. He passed away December 4, 2020.

Fayrene was raised at Kent and graduated from Cromwell High School in 1959. After graduation, she moved to Omaha where she worked in a factory, bowled and played softball. When married the couple moved to the family farm in Verdon. She was a homemaker and farm wife until the kids were in school and then she drove a school bus for Southeast Consolidated Schools and then Humboldt Public Schools. She often kept the books at the sporting events she drove to. She retired after 20 plus years of bus driving. She was a member of the Shubert Christian Church and held various position in church leadership through the years and also President of the Nebraska State Christian Church Women's Fellowship Conference.

Fayrene is survived by her children, Kevin and his wife Lori A. of Auburn, NE and their children Elizabeth and Emma, Karen Schulte and her husband Brent of Berryton, KS and their children, Abigayle, Audrey and Andrew, Kristen Lovell and her husband Rolland of Valparaiso and their child, Cortni Kyle and his wife Lori M. of Shubert and their children David and Danyelle, brother, James Kessler of Lake Park, IA, sister, Janice Phillips and her husband Ross of Tulsa, OK, many In-laws, Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Frederick, Twins; Floyd and Lloyd in infancy, sister, Phyllis Focht and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Kessler.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, March 31, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Shubert Christian Church with Pastor Jackie Gfeller officiating. Interment will be in Harris Cemetery.

John B. Kane, Jr., 93, Atchison, Kansas, died Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Atchison Medicalodges surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Church with Fr. Meinrad Miller, OSB, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A prayer service will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 5:45 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:00 P.M. John was born August 8, 1931, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of John B., Sr. and Florence (Byrne) Kane. He attended St. Patrick Elementary and Atchison County Community Schools. Due to unforeseen hardships John did not graduate high school, but through hard work and determination he earned his GED at the age of 40.

John served in the United States Army from October 14, 1952, until his honorable discharge in October 1960, having attained the rank of CPL.

On August 26, 1957, at St. Joseph's Church, John would marry the love of his life, Beulah Fitzpatrick. They were married 66 years before Beulah preceded him in death on January 27, 2024.

After serving in the Army, John went to work for Page Airways for 15 years. He then went on to work for Kansas Gas Service for 22 years, until his retirement. Following his time at Kansas Gas, he was employed with Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, driving for services and assisting in any role that he could to serve others.

John was a 60+ year member of the American Legion Post No. 6, holding all offices except for Commander. In his time with the American Legion he presented over 350 American flags to families of deceased veterans. John was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1175. He delivered Meal on Wheels for 10 years and drove patients for American Cancer Society "Road to Recovery" Program. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Westar Energy Retirees Club. John loved telling stories and typically had a good joke. He had a knack for being able to remember facts about people or help to fill in a family tree.

Survivors include three sons, Richard "Archie" (Betty) Kane, Atchison, KS, Eddie (Cindy) Kane, Eudora, KS, Brian (Tracy) Kane, Atchison, KS, a daughter Rose (Tim) Trower, Atchison, KS, a brother, Eugene Kane, Atchison, KS, twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, with one on the way, a great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah, two brothers, Elvin "Skip" Kane, Donald "Bud" Kane, and five sisters, Lorene Clemens, Mary Lou Andre, Margie Swenson, Pat Rush and Doris Blankenship.

Lauren Fern "Pabemasnokwe" BigGoose, 31, of Tama, Iowa passed away with family by her side at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

She was born on December 6th, 1993, in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Lester Lee BigGoose Jr. and Kelly Ann Chandler. She graduated high school from Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Oklahoma in 2012. After high school she attended Friends University as well as Haskell Indian University for a short time.

Lauren worked in different positions in the gaming industry, working at Prairie Band Casino & Resort in Mayetta, KS and the Meskwaki Casino & Hotel in Tama, IA. She was a former member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and attended the Native American Church throughout all her life, she was a Catholic. Her father is a member of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma and her mother is a member of the Ft. Belknap Tribe of Montana, respectively.

Lauren enjoyed cooking, spending time with her companion Monroe, he survives of the home, playing with her two cats, visiting with her friends and family in person and on the phone, going to the casino, doing her hair and makeup, cruising and road trips and most of all spending time with her two beautiful children Bubba and Shine. She was known for her loving and fun personality, her laughs and her amazing smile with those two beautiful dimples.

Lauren is survived by her two children Dayson and Sunshine Keahna of Tama, IA, her companion Monroe Wanatee of Tama, IA, her mother, Kelly Chandler of Hays, MT, her father Lester BigGoose Jr. of Hoyt, KS, her grandmother Jeanette Little Sun of Hoyt, KS, three sisters and one brother, LeRain BigGoose, of Kansas City, KS, Levonna BigGoose of Hoyt, KS, and Kassandra Medrano and Tony Chandler, of Ft. Grant Eugene Speaks, 97, of Troy, Kansas passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas.

Grant was born on October 5, 1927, in Sparks, Kansas to John Terrance and Alice (Blanton) Speaks.

He graduated from Troy, High School after graduating he joined the U.S. Army, upon returning from the army he went to work for Pepsi Cola as a supervisor for 38 years. Grant was a member of the Troy Christian Church, Troy Masonic Lodge #55, Troy Lions Club, York Rite, Shriner's and Troy American Legion Post #55.

Grant married Barbara Jean Thomas on October 16, 1948, in Atchison, Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 16, 2022. He was also preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, James Speaks, siblings, Mike Speaks, Addie Young, Virginia Clary, Alma Lee Reder and Johnny Speaks and son-in-law, Gary Blanton.

Nettie "Lucile" Wiedmer, 98, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2025, in Savannah, Missouri.

Lucile was born on February 24, 1927, in Troy, Kansas to James J. Sr. and Dorothy (Keller) Davies.

She worked as a sewing machine operator in St. Joseph, Missouri for 25 years and was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Blair, Kansas.

Lucile married Albert Wiedmer in September of 1944, during WWII in Miami, Florida. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Sharon Ream, Josephine Bunck, Freda Dhone and Ruth Kline, brother, James J. Davies Jr., son-in-law, Phil Thomas and a grandson, Wade Thomas.

Gertrude Hays, 94, of Falls City, NE, passed away March 19, 2025 at Falls City. She was born September 24, 1930 at Horton, KS to Charles and Ollie Butler Watson.

She married Duane C. Hays on December 19, 1975 at Hiawatha, KS. He passed away January 11, 2022.

Gertrude and Duane established their home in Horton, KS when married and moved to Falls City in 1996 and she has lived there since.

Gertrude is survived by the loving staff of Falls City Nursing and Rehab. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and a brother.

Gertrude has been cremated and her services are currently pending at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Lucille A. Yoesel, 98, of Sabetha, KS, passed away March 20, 2025 at Sabetha. She was born October 10, 1926 at Falls City, NE to Elmer and Amelia Zimmerman Scheitel.

She married Kenneth P. Yoesel on May 9, 1948 at Falls City. He passed away January 20, 2016

Lucille was born and raised east of Falls City. When the couple married, they established their home for 2 years in Falls City and later moved to Morrill, KS and continued to live there. She was a homemaker for most of her life. She was a cook at the Fountain Villa in Sabetha for a couple of years. She was a member of North Ridge Church at Sabetha.

Lucille is survived by her sons, Kent and his wife Belinda of Union, TN, Mark and his wife Marie of Willamina, OR, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son in infancy, brothers, Marvin and Wilbur Scheitel and a sister, Evelyn Gatz.

Kirby Lee "Bear" Duncan Jr., 52, of Horton, Kansas, passed away surrounded by family and loved ones on Monday, March 17, 2025, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. He was born December 24, 1972, in Horton, Kansas, the son of Kirby Duncan Sr.

Kirby was proceeded in death by his father, Kirby Sr; sister, Lisa Bailey; and son Christopher.

Kirby is survived by 7 sisters and 3 brothers; his children Lakota, Topeka KS, Norma, Mayetta KS, Thunder, Janesville, WI, Skyla, Horton KS, Desiree, Pawhuska, OK, and Megan, Razeysburg, OH; and his 8 grandchildren.

Kirby was a member of the Kennekuk Church. Kirby also participated in Native American Church services, the Drum way of life, and many tribal ceremonials.

Kirby was an active member of the Kickapoo and Potawatomi communities and served as a member of the Kickapoo Senior Citizens Advisory Board for the Kickapoo Reservation.

Kirby was a talented and accomplished artist and well known for his love of art, music, and all of his Native peoples. Kirby served as a mentor and advocate for many tribal communities actively promoting Wellness, Recovery, and Healing through his artistry.

Traditional supper and wake will be held Friday night, March 21st at the Kickapoo Community Building on the Kickapoo Reservation. Burial will be Saturday morning in the Lena Mason Family Cemetery on the Kickapoo Reservation.

Dennis Alan Roberts-Fulbright, 64, a devoted father, "Grumpy," minister, musician, and aspiring farmer, passed away in a tractor accident on Monday, March 17, 2025.

Born in Colorado, Dennis dedicated his life to faith, family, and music. At 18 years old, he answered the call to ministry, serving as a passionate leader within the Disciples of Christ for over three decades. More than anything, Dennis loved Jesus, and he spent his life spreading the word of Christ across Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, California, Iowa, and Nebraska. His unwavering faith and deep love for people made a lasting impact on every community he served.

A gifted musician and songwriter, Dennis composed hundreds of folk-style songs, using music as a way to share his faith and bring people together. Whether preaching from the pulpit, strumming his guitar, or riding with the Christian Motorcyclists Association, his voice carried the warmth and wisdom of a life well-lived.

Dennis also had a deep love for farming and tractors. It wasn't a sermon by Rev. Dennis without a tractor or farming reference thrown in. Though his passing was unexpected, those who knew him find comfort in knowing he left this world in a place that brought him peace; on his Fulbright Farm with his Dennisland Creek.

Above all, Dennis was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His grandkids affectionately called him "Grumpy"—a name that fit his outward gruffness but never fooled anyone who knew him. Beneath that exterior was a compassionate and loving man, always ready with a helping hand, a wise word, or a song.

He is survived by his loving wife, his three children and their spouses, three cherished grandchildren, and dog. His legacy of faith, music, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.

A Celebration to honor Dennis's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025, at the Shubert Christian Church in Shubert, Nebraska with Pastor John States officiating. The family welcomes all who knew and loved Dennis to join them as they celebrate his wonderful life and his new journey in the arms of God.

Ardise Louise (Moyer) Jurgens, 88, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on February 3, 1937, in rural Humboldt, Nebraska to Elmer and Mabel (Snell) Moyer. She was raised in Humboldt with her family and attended Humboldt Public Schools. After moving to Pawnee County in the winter of 1953, Ardise met her future husband Gehde Jurgens who was playing Santa Clause for a country school. She attended high school in Pawnee City for her senior year and graduated from Pawnee City High School with the class of 1955.

On January 8, 1956, Ardise was united in marriage to Gehde Jurgens. To this union four daughters, Lois, Linda, Laura, and Loretta were born. The couple raised their family and farmed north of Summerfield, Kansas until 1983. They moved back to Beatrice where Ardise worked at the Martin Luther Home and

BSDC as a CMA. In 1993, they retired and moved to Humboldt where Ardise has lived since. Gehde passed away in 2012 on the morning of his and Ardise's 56th wedding anniversary. Ardise continued to live in Humboldt where she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She lived right across the street from the school in Humboldt and enjoyed seeing not only her grandchildren, but the many friends that would stop by over the years. Ardise enjoyed gardening, flowers, Husker volleyball, and watching all the activities of her family. She will always be remembered and cherished for her unique sense of humor.

Ardise passed away at her home in Humboldt, Nebraska on Sunday, March 16, 2025, having reached the age of eighty-eight years, one month, and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Gehde, brothers: Leroy, Elton, and Bernus Moyer, her sister Rosella Naber, and great-grandson Reed Liam Griffin.

Walt Boring, age 68 of Johnson, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2025, in Auburn.

Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Fuqua, 95, of Mayetta, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born February 22, 1930 at St. Benedict, the daughter of John and Merwina Levings Martin. She was the fourth oldest of nine children. She graduated from Public High School in Seneca, and from Washburn University in Topeka.

She married Jack Fuqua on October 15, 1953 at Assumption Church in Topeka. They were blessed with 68 ½ years of marriage. He preceded her in death on April 19, 2022.

Betty was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta, and a member and Past President of the Altar Society at the church.

Betty taught at different schools for eight years, including schools at Silver Lake and Dwight, KS, and at Assumption Catholic School in Topeka. She had also taught all eight grades in a one room school house. She worked at Luce Press Clipping Bureau for 3 ½ years and operated a daycare from her home for fourteen years.

Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Steve Fuqua, a daughter, Janie Teetzel, a great granddaughter, Abella Rose Teetzel, a son-in-law, who she loved as a son, Floyd Teetzel, and siblings, Charlotte Jones, Rosemary Passino, Jim Martin, twins Leo and Leroy Martin, Chuck Martin and Anne Whitesell.

Eldon "Dean" Horner, 97, of Ponca City, OK, passed away Friday, March 14, 2025 at Renaissance Assisted Living in Ponca City, OK. He was born June 15, 1927 in Havensville, KS, the son of Raymond Lee and Veda Lorene (McKinsey) Horner.

Dean graduated from Holton High School in 1945 and from Kansas State University with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948 with the 7th Infantry.

He lived in the Ponca City community since 1956. He worked for Conoco in the Central Engineering Department as a Mechanical Designer; retiring after 29 years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ponca City, OK and a life-time member of the Holton V.F.W. Post 1367.

Dean married Martha Rose DeBusk on September 4, 1949. They celebrated over 61 years of marriage before her passing on January 10, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Horner and Veda Smith; 2 sisters, June Longo and Wilma Anderson and brother, Jack Horner.

Survivors include his son, Brian Horner (Kathy) of Edmond, OK; daughter, Katherine Burton (Tim) of Belton, MO and 2 grandchildren, Kelsey Horner Everitt (Jason) and Emily Horner French (Jason) and 1 great-granddaughter, Brynlee Horner.

Mary Claire was born on August 29, 1934, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Howard and Marjorie (Arington) Reichart. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1952. Mary was the USD 377 Elementary School Secretary for twenty-nine years. She was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Valley Falls, KS and enjoyed reading and embroidery.

Mary Claire married Donald Eugene Wohlgemuth on July 31, 1953, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS. He preceded her on March 6, 2019. Survivors include two sons, Kirk and Ruth Wohlgemuth, Effingham, KS, Kent and Mary Beth Wohlgemuth, Atchison, KS, a sister Patricia Milliken, Spring Valley, CA, six grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her parents also preceded her in death.

Chad Alton Jepson, 50, of Lawrence, KS, formerly of Valley Falls, KS, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, March 9, 2025 in Topeka, KS. He was born November 6, 1974 in Topeka, KS, the son of Norman Gene Jepson and Cathy (Lassiter) Jepson.

Chad graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1993 and from Washburn Tech receiving an Associates Degree in Legal. He proudly served in the United States Army.

He worked as a Baldwin City Employee in the Waste Water Dept. and formerly Maintenance Manager for the City of Valley Falls.

Chad was a member of Valley Falls Lutheran Church and life member of Valley Falls VFW Grahem-Herbers Post 3084.

He married April Nicholson; they later divorced.

Survivors include his mother, Cathy Jepson of Lawrence, KS; father, Norman Jepson (Jennifer) of Miami, OK; daughter, Bunni Jepson of Stull, KS; sister, Angela Jepson of Lake Wabaunsee in Alma, KS and brother, Shawn M. Jepson (Shylo) of Lawrence, KS.

Evelyn "Marie" Lehman, 85, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Sunday, March 9, 2025, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha, Kansas.

Marie was born on April 21, 1939, in Allendale, Missouri to Lawrence and Gladys Faye (Hobbs) Thompson.

Marie married Paul Lehman on May 21, 1966, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He survives of the home.

Phyllis Elaine (Cushinberry) Downing, age 77, of Atchison, Kansas, passed peacefully on March 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Atchison, Kansas, and was the last living child of Paul Cushinberry, Sr., and Alta (Smith) Cushinberry. She went to Lincoln Grade School and is a graduate of Atchison High School.

Phyllis married the love of her life, Clifford A. Downing, Jr., on October 9, 1966, and they started a life of love and created a beautiful family together. Phyllis began her professional career at AT&T on the switchboard until taking a role at USD 409 as a paraprofessional and later a secretary for a total of over thirty years.

She enjoyed softball in the summertime and was a true competitor at heart. It did not matter if you were her child or grandchild, she still wanted to beat you when you were playing any kind of game! Phyllis changed the lives of numerous children by taking on the role of a foster parent for over thirty years of her life.

Phyllis's immense and unending love for her family and friends was evident in the way she lived her life. She was always there for others and to support for community. She was a lifelong community activist for north Atchison and was on too many committees to even begin to list but was very proud of her work with Juneteenth. She loved sharing meals with others, and if there was an event that she was cooking for, you always knew she was designated for her Mac & Cheese and Sweet Potatoes-they were the best! Her bright spirit and desire to make a constant change in the world will be greatly missed by so many.

She is survived by her children, Clifton Eugene Downing, Paula Elaine Downing, Ethel Mae Downing and LeAnne Renee Downing; ten grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandsons, two great grandchildren and her siblings.

Services will be Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11:00 am at the First Christian Church, 301 N. 7th Street, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on that Saturday morning, beginning at 10 am before the service at the church. Phyllis will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. Dale G. Fankhauser, 70, of rural Humboldt, Nebraska was born on August 27, 1954, in Humboldt, Nebraska to Melvin and Martha (Jud) Fankhauser. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Humboldt and attended Humboldt Public Schools. Dale graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1973. After graduating, Dale worked as a Deputy for Humboldt and drove school bus for Humboldt Public Schools.

On June 15, 1984, Dale was united in marriage to Suzanne Meyer at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Diller, Nebraska. To this union three daughters, Katie, Adrian, and Lisa, were born. The couple began their marriage living on a farm southwest of Humboldt before buying the farm from Alan Fritch. Dale, along with his brother Ron, started Fankhauser Brothers Trucking. They operated the trucking business while also raising hogs, cattle, and bucket calves together with their family. Dale was very active with his daughters in 4-H and the activities it involved.

Dale passed away on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Pawnee County Memorial Hospital in Pawnee City, Nebraska having reached the age of seventy years, six months, and eleven days. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Lonnie Meyer.

Dale is survived by his wife Suzanne of rural Humboldt, daughters: Katie Meyer and husband Josh of Bern, KS; Adrian Buckridge and husband Josh of Fremont, NE; Lisa Edelman and husband Ben of Bern, KS; grandchildren: Corbin, Chloe, and Callie Meyer of Bern, KS; Charlotte Edelman of Bern, KS; his brother Ron Fankhauser of rural Humboldt, NE; brother-in-law Donnie Meyer of Diller, NE; sister-in-law Sharon Baglyos and husband Paul of Baltimore, MD; and many other relatives and friends.

Yvonne Dalluge, a devoted mother, cherished friend, and unwavering servant to her community, passed away Friday morning, February 28, 2025, at Beatrice Hospital in Beatrice, Nebraska. She was 89 years old. Her life was a testament to faith, passion, and fearless adventure, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Yvonne was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, where her deep faith and compassion guided her in all that she did. She dedicated her life to serving others, leading by example, and living out her beliefs with grace and humility.

Yvonne was born on October 29, 1935 in Nelson, Nebraska, but spent the majority of her adult life in Pawnee City, Nebraska. Yvonne's love for her hometown was unparalleled. She poured her heart into the Pawnee City Historical Society, tirelessly working to preserve and share the rich history of the community she loved so dearly. She was a natural ambassador, convincing tour bus companies to bring visitors to the area, then hopping on board the bus as it crossed the county line to personally share the stories and charm of Pawnee City and Pawnee County. Yvonne's passion for promoting her community also led her to open My Blue Heaven Bed & Breakfast, not really as a business venture but because of her love of people and to ensure visitors felt welcomed in the magic of Southeast Nebraska.

Her advocacy for Southeast Nebraska went far beyond its borders. Yvonne would load her car with brochures and drive across the state, stopping at truck stops and attractions, passionately asking to leave behind materials showcasing her beloved community.

Her efforts were never about recognition or profit but always about service and love for the place she called home. Behind the scenes, she often would be instrumental in supporting restaurants, lodging, entertainment, and other projects for her beloved community.

Yvonne's adventurous spirit and curiosity were not confined to Nebraska. She traveled to over 20 countries and explored most of the United States. Whether as a tourist or on missionary trips, she sought to immerse herself deeply in other cultures, experiencing life through the eyes of those she met. She was fearless. She carried medical supplies to Jamaica and then helped in a local hospital there. She sampled unique local delicacies like tarantula spiders in Cambodia. She even volunteered at the Rose Bowl Parade just because she was curious about how the flowers on those gorgeous floats stay alive. At age 78, she rode a Segway through the desert, to the amazement of everyone there that day.

Her accolades and awards filled a wall, but a few of her most prestigious awards were the Nebraska Mother of the Year and the Henry Fonda Award, which is the state's highest tourism award. For her, though, it was always only about giving back, serving others, and living a life filled with purpose and love—not seeking recognition for herself.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Duane; her sister, Mercedes Tevebaugh; and her parents, Earl and Nellie (Knapp) Tevebaugh. She is survived by her sons, Bruce (Deb) and Charles (Sabine), and her grandson, Cedrick (Honor). Her family was the heart of her world, and her legacy of love and strength will live on through them.

The words Yvonne chose to conclude her autobiography highlighted what she held most dear:

"When I was growing up, I had no idea my life would be as full as it has been. I remember what John Kennedy said in his speech of 1961: 'Do not ask what my country can do for me but rather what I can do for my country.' It has not always been a smooth ride, but everyone has their ups and downs. In the Bible, it says that God never gives you more than you can handle." "I am extremely proud of both of my sons and their families. You have accomplished much and have followed your dreams."

She leaves behind a world made better by her presence, a community that will miss her deeply, and a family who will carry her memory forward with love and gratitude.

Yvonne's life was a beautiful story of service, adventure, and love. She will be missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Wilbur Duane Last, passed away March 7, 2025 on his farm home at 90 years old. Born on September 4, 1934 at Shubert, Wilbur experienced nearly a century of life.

Wilbur Last was best known as an arborist who loved sharing his knowledge of trees and plants. Family and friends remember Wilbur as a teacher who always had a lesson or story to tell. He enjoyed visiting with everyone and traveling to new places to meet new people. When not outdoors or socializing, Wilbur dedicated himself to reading and writing in pursuit of a lifelong education.

At 19, Wilbur was drafted into the Korean War as a military paratrooper. While stationed in Alaska, his daredevil spirit brought an official request to try out for the US Olympic cross country ski team and he ranked in the top 20%. After the military, Wilbur attended the Apostolic Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN where he met his wife, Irma Baer. They were married August 31, 1957 at Superior, WI and celebrated 65 years together. Both were lifelong members of the United Pentecostal Apostolic Church.

Wilbur will be deeply missed by family and friends who will forever cherish the memories of his adventurous spirit. Between the tree limbs and the stars, the man spent his life looking up into the heavens.

Wilbur is survived by his children, Tamara (Kevin) Fletcher of Savannah, MO, Mike (Toni) Last of Yellville, AR and Amber Last of Stella, NE, 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, one sister Yolanda (Steve) Jelinek of Emory, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Last and Lena May Conover, his wife, Irma Last, daughter, Vicki O'Neal, brothers, Paul Last, Dennis Last and Meryln Last, and his sister Neloma Mahowski.

Sheryl Louise Harbour, 78, formerly of Humboldt, Nebraska passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Auburn, Nebraska. She was born on December 8, 1946, in Omaha, Nebraska to Chester and Norma (Stettler) Harbour. Sheryl was raised with her family in Missouri and Texas before moving to Humboldt, Nebraska. She lived in Humboldt with her mother and brother Lonnie for many years. She loved the community of Humboldt, especially around Richardson County Fair time. In 2014, Sheryl became a resident of Good Samaritan Society in Auburn. While living in Auburn, she enjoyed the daily activities of the facility. Sheryl loved doing cross-word puzzles, arts and crafts, and watching her favorite show "Judge Judy".

Sheryl is survived by her niece Connie Adams of Omaha, NE; nephew John M. Adams of Omaha, NE; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Lonnie Harbour, and sister Sarah (John) Adams.

Lelah Geannene Livengood, 90, Mound City, Missouri died Friday, March 7, 2025, at the Fairfax Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri.

Geannene was born April 2, 1934, to Emmett G. and Nellie (Cooper) Vonderschmidt at their farm home West of Craig, Missouri.

She was a graduate of Craig High School. After graduation she went to work as a bookkeeper for the former Noma Lites Corporation in St. Joseph, Missouri.

On February 22, 1953, she was united in marriage to Melvin L. Livengood at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Craig. Melvin and Geannene were blessed with three sons; Douglas Von, Keven Lee, and Jeffry Scott.

Geannene was a member of St. Peter's Church until it closed in 2012, due to many floods, after which she attended the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Mound City.

Helping Melvin in the fields and taking care of the boys were her love. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and served as President and Treasurer, many committees, and was a Sunday School Teacher while her boys were young. She also helped with Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary Post 164 of Craig, serving on many committees and offices. She served on the Senior Housing Board for several years.

She loved to keep her grandkids, play cards, games, going to Hardees, and Dairy Queen as they grew up. She attended every event she could, school plays, ball games, band concerts, dance recitals, violin and piano recitals, and rodeos or anything they participated in.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin (2007), a stepmother Emma, a sister and brother-in-law Darlene and Fritz McGinness.

She is survived by her three sons: Douglas (Becky), Mound City, Keven (Becky), Shenandoah, Iowa, Jeffry (Christy), Craig, grandchildren, Nathan, Gena, Kyle (Melissa), Anna (Shomari), Molly (Chris), Oliva, Dusty and Jessica (August), great grandchildren: Trevor, Quinton, Madison, Logan, Paige, Quinn, Reagan, Annakat, Emmaline, Kaylie (Logan), Kaitlyn (Grant), and Scotty, great great grandchildren Jeremiah, Tierney and Tinsley, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was a very loving Grandmother (Gran).

Samuel "Ron" Ronald Payne, 85, of Sabetha, Kansas, passed away on March 8, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.

Ron was born on February 4, 1940, in Capioma, Kansas, to Samuel and Elda (Gilbert) Payne. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school through the sixth grade. After that, he attended school in Sabetha and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1958. Following graduation, Ron spent several years working various jobs, primarily in mechanic work.

Ron proudly served in the United States Army National Guard from 1963 to 1969. During the Vietnam War, he was called into active duty, where he demonstrated courage and dedication to his country. After his military service, he worked as a salesman in Kansas City, specializing in infant clothing, baby items, women's clothing, and jewelry.

Later, Ron returned to his true passion: working with cars. He worked as a mechanic and service writer at Kansas City British Motors before returning to Sabetha. Upon his return to Sabetha, he opened a radiator and mechanic shop, which he operated for several years. Then, he worked at various other jobs, including Aberle Ford, Leman Motors, the Sabetha Power Plant, and Country Mart. In his spare time, Ron searched for and sold antique auto parts. He also enjoyed spending time in his shop behind his home, where he especially loved working on anything with a motor. Many will remember his unique mailbox stand, which he designed and fabricated to mount an automotive wheel. Several of these mailbox stands are still in use around Sabetha. Ron also cherished working on and spending time on the family farm where he was born and raised.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kay Garcia.

Ron is survived by his two children, Jeff (Jocelyn) Payne and Heather (Gary) Elliott; his three grandchildren, Hailey (Aaron) Duran, Jacob Payne, and Jessica Payne; and his two great-grandchildren, Judah Young and Ronan Duran.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Popkess Mortuary. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha with military honors conducted after the service. Ruth Ellen Braun Miller, age 83, of Atchison, passed away late Thursday evening, March 6, 2025, at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City, MO.

The mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Louis Church, Good Intent, with interment in St. Louis Church Cemetery. Ruth was born in Atchison on September 19, 1941, the daughter of Victor H. Braun and Ida W. (Evans) Braun. She attended Saint Joseph's grade school, and graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in 1959. After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

She married Melvin C. Miller at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Atchison, on August 24, 1963. They were married just days short of 58 years until his passing on August 13, 2021. To this union, 3 sons and one daughter were born. Before building their own home nearby, they lived in the church rectory of St. Louis Church for 20 years, and Ruth served as a member and officer on the church Altar Society. In her younger years, she also taught CCD.

Ruth was a homemaker and enjoyed raising their 4 children. She always had a big garden, did lots of canning and freezing, and enjoyed passing these skills on to her children and grandchildren. She attended countless sporting events and enjoyed reading, sewing, and tending to her flower garden. Her greatest joy in life, was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and teaching most of them cooking and sewing skills.

Ruth is survived by her children, Scott (Lisa) Miller, Parkville, MO; Paul (Becky) Miller, Cummings, KS; Mark (Brenda) Miller, Nortonville, KS; and Kelli (Brad) Nichols, Smithville, MO; nine grandchildren, Logan Miller, Austen (Allison) Miller, Kaitlyn (Grant) Cason, Garrett Miller, Mike (Trina) Miller, Patrick (Jenna) Miller, Sarah Miller, Abby Nichols, and Aubrey Nichols; 5 great-grandchildren, Zoey and Killian Miller, Thomas Cason, Michael Miller, Jr., and Amelia Miller as well as several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Rita (Jim) Wells, Diamond City, AR.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 58 years, Melvin Miller, her parents, Victor and Ida Braun, and two brothers, Bernard Braun, Richard Braun, and his wife, Jackie Braun.

Phyllis Jean Walton, age 88, of Atchison, KS, died March 4, 2025, while on a trip in Alaska, doing what she loved to do, enjoying life and making memories.

Phyllis was born on July 31, 1936, in Highland, Kansas, the daughter of Paul John Walton and Minnie Ellen (Dittemore) Walton. She is a graduate of Highland High School.
She married Norman Lee Walton on October 7, 1955, and they shared forty-five years together, creating a family and sharing their love. Phyllis and Norm moved to Atchison, and she began her professional career with Dr. E.J. Bribach, whose practice specialized in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. She then worked at JC Penney, the Water Company of Atchison, and served as the Deputy City Clerk (1985-1992) and City Clerk (1992-2005) in Atchison. She retired with over 25 years of exceptional service to the City of Atchison. Phyllis was a former member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, she was the Past President of the Kansas City Clerk and Finance Officer Association, and the recipient of the Mildred Vance City Clerk and Municipal Finance Officer of the Year award for outstanding service and contributions to her community.

She was a member of First Christian Church and former church elder. She served on the outreach committee and the church Women's Group.
Phyllis was always on the GO! She was always ready to travel with friends and family and if you ever agreed to a trip with her, she had plans in place and was ready to go see the world. She never wanted her days to be dull, so she filled her weeks by playing bridge numerous times. She truly loved her weekly Card Club ladies and her weekly watch parties with her Chiefs Chicks. Her grandchildren brought her great joy, and she loved the time she spent with her family.
She is survived by her children, Jacque (Clark) Pregont, Scott (Linda) Walton; grandson, Justin (Melinda) Pregont; granddaughters, Rachel (Emily) Pregont, Jessica (Austin McClain) Walton, Hannah (Justin) Ross; and seven great grandchildren, Xavier and Viviane Grimes-Pregont, Maya and Louis Pregont, Jovie McClain, Isla and Rhett Ross.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norm; twin brother, Paul Dean Walton; sisters, Alma Sisk, Lenora Snapp, and Juanita Ausmus.
A funeral service will be Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 11 am at the First Christian Church with Rev. Dr. David May officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, March 12th from 5:30-7 pm at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Marilyn Rose (Huckabay) Koelzer, 91, of Oskaloosa, formerly of Ozawkie/Meriden, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Rest Well Home Plus Assisted Living Center in Oskaloosa. She was born March 8, 1933 in Seneca, KS, the daughter of Frank and Nola Mathewson. She was married to Jack P. Huckabay on April 16, 1955. Jack preceded her in death on March 5, 2012. On May 30, 2015, she married David Koelzer, he survives.

She was a 1949 graduate of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Seneca. She then attended, and graduated in 1953, as a Registered Nurse from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka, KS. Her 43 year career providing dedicated nursing care began at Hiawatha Community Hospital before moving to the Jefferson County Health Department. She then worked alongside Dr. Lumb, a rheumatologist in Topeka. Her true passion was always caring for her patients and providing compassionate support which led to her returning to Jefferson County Home Health and Hospice to finish her nursing career. Being a nurse came naturally to her because she had the biggest heart!

Beyond her career, Marilyn found immense pleasure in the simple things in life. She loved her children and enjoyed her grandkids and great-grandkids, going to activities to support and cheer them on, taking long walks, and time nurturing her garden! She enjoyed the card game of Bridge. You could find her gathered around a table of friends on a Saturday night, or joining several local Bridge groups during retirement. She was dedicated to volunteering at God's Storehouse in Meriden for many years.

Marilyn's family was her pride and joy. Survivors include loving daughters, Jan Wells, Meriden, KS, and Joleen Nocktonick, Denton, TX, devoted sons, Jay (Kathy Barbagallo) Huckabay, Blue Springs, MO, and Jeff (Tami Martin) Huckabay, Topeka, KS, two sisters, Donna (Jim) Stewart, Greenfield, IN, and Ruth (Bill) Gapske, Overland Park, KS, 11 grandchildren: Justin Huckabay, Jessica Card, Jamie Wells, Brian Wells, Taryn (Wyatt) Steenson, Payton (Samuel) Nobo, Riley (Ryan) Luna, Jayden (Daim) Povilauskaite, Logan Nocktonick, Avery Nocktonick, Haydn Nocktonick and nine great-grandchildren: Aly (Alyse) Huckabay, Joel Huckabay, Jocelyn Card, Andrew Card, Briley Wells, Brayden Webb, Camden Wells, Marianna Luna, and Melia Luna. Theresa Marie Winkler, 87, of Seneca, Kansas died at her home on Saturday, March 8, 2025, surrounded by her family

Theresa was born on February 23, 1938, the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Wessel) Hermesch in Kelly, Kansas, the youngest of 16 children. She grew up in the Kelly area and graduated from Kelly High School in 1956.

Theresa was united in marriage to Marvin Joseph Winkler on February 12, 1957 AT St. Bede's catholic Church in Kelly. They celebrated 63 wonderful years of marriage together.

Marvin and Theresa lived on their farmstead near Corning until moving to Seneca in 2004. Theresa lovingly raised their 7 children and was actively involved in the farming operation with Marvin. Theresa took pride in sewing all her children's clothes, assuring their Easter and Christmas outfits were always special. Each of her 7 children cherish handmade 25th wedding anniversary quilts made by Theresa, as do many grandchildren and great-grandchildren their handmade baby quilts and/or crocheted afghans. When Theresa placed her cinnamon rolls or coconut cream pies in family gift exchanges, they were the most sought after and 'stolen' gift, as they were always better than anything bought in a store.

Theresa cared for a large garden, prepared meals for not only her family but also for extra workers in the field during busy periods and was the primary truck driver each harvest. Additionally, Theresa had seasonal jobs with Montgomery Wards, JC Penney, Kramer Retail Liquor, and Jorgeson Accounting for many years.

Marvin and Theresa were active members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church while in Corning and provided marriage preparation classes to many young couples in the community. Theresa participated in Kelly Twilighters Unit. In 2004, Marvin and Theresa became parishioners of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca where Theresa was a member of St. Ann's Altar Society. Theresa cherished the close friendships she made while participating in the Sts. Peter and Paul Quilters.

In addition to her sewing and quilting, Theresa enjoyed playing cards, square dancing, traveling and, most importantly, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her home was a gathering spot for many family visits, and Theresa welcomed out-of-town nieces and nephews to stay when in Kansas. Her family has many fond memories of Theresa's oldest sister, Sister Amanda Hermesch's, annual visits from Colorado.

Theresa provided loving care to Marvin for several years until his death on April 22, 2020. She is also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Bernard, Frank, Edwin, Albert, Raymond, Lambert, Fred Jr, Kenneth and Lawrence; and her sisters, Sister Amanda, OSB, Anna Brokamp, Agnes Rempe, Mary Brucken, Rita Buser, and Lucy Hermesch.

Theresa is survived by their seven children, Donna (Owen) Zinke, Janet (Tom) Kramer, both of Seneca, Sharon (Morris) Cordes of Houston, TX, Brian (Barb) Winkler of Corning, Glenn (Kim) Winkler of Colwich, Elaine (Dennis) Ice of Meriden, and Nancy (Roger) Dalinghaus of Laguna Beach, CA; 19 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Eunice Winkler and Rosalyn Hermesch, both of Seneca.

Reva Jane Deters, 87, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, at Life Care Center of Seneca, where she had been a resident.

Reva was born May 23, 1937 to Raymond and Gertrude (Koch) Droge. She was raised in the town of St. Benedict, KS with two sisters and two brothers. She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in St. Benedict, KS in the 8th grade. In her early years she worked at the Seneca Hospital and the Dutch Mill in Seneca, KS.

On April 3, 1956, Reva married Linus Henry Deters at St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Benedict, KS. They would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this April. They began their married life on a farm southwest of Centralia. In 1963 They moved to a farm south of Baileyville, where their family was made complete with raising 5 children. There Reva helped Linus run their family dairy, milking the cow's morning and night and found time to raise registered dogs.

Reva was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a member of Saint Ann's Altar Society. When she served as an officer, and she was in charge of bringing back the parish picnic. She sang with the choir, was a eucharistic minister, and helped with stitching many quilts together with the ladies of the church. Reva volunteered for many years at SPPS Mission Center. She was also dedicated to giving blood at the local blood drives. She was a hospital guild lifetime member. Reva enjoyed getting together with the neighborhood ladies, once a month for "club." While enjoying each other's company, the club ladies would make name tag door decorations for Crestview and Country View Care Homes in Seneca. She loved having her family gather together for celebrations.

Reva had an abundant love of hobbies. She enjoyed time away from the farm to attend classes to make ceramics, which her children still use today. She knitted sweaters, crochet doilies, cross stitched patterns, and painted nature scenes. Her beloved hobby was sewing countless quilts. Reva made quilts for Sacred Heart Church picnics, her children, her grandchildren, for neighbors to donate to church picnics, and for herself just because she loved the pattern. When she wasn't working on one of her hobbies Reva enjoyed growing flowers and feeding birds so that she could watch them, especially Orioles.

Reva was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Gertrude (Koch) Droge, her siblings and in-laws: Norma Jean (Joe) Wociechowski, Maumee, OH; Raymond (Mary Lou) Droge; Topeka, KS; Diane Laub, Topeka, KS; and an infant brother James Droge.

She is survived by her husband, Linus; son Gregory (Denise) Deters, Centralia, KS; daughter Jean Mosher (Dale Blanton), Topeka, KS; daughter Sheila (Rod) Lewis, St. Petersburg, FL; son Darrin (Cheryl) Deters, Baileyville, KS; daughter Debbie (Don) Berkley, Lenexa, KS; brother Craig Droge, Topeka, KS; 3 granddaughters; 13 grandsons; 3 great granddaughters; 18 great grandsons with two on the way.

Patrick Schulenberg, 61, of Rulo, NE, passed away March 6, 2025 at Rulo. He was born April 10, 1963 at Falls City to Richard and Mary (Buchanan) Schulenberg

Patrick was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School in 1982. He worked various jobs until becoming employed by Humboldt Grain, Bobcocks at Hiawatha, KS & the Iowa Tribe. He was a member of the Riverside Fellowship Church.

Patrick is survived by his wife, Brenda Popejoy-Schulenberg of Rulo, daughters, Misty Popejoy and her husband Joe of Rulo, Wendy Fisher and her husband Robert of Humboldt, NE, Taylor Gryder and her husband Jacob of Falls City, brother, Jim and his wife Dotti of Liberty, MO, Jan Becker of Omaha, Marylynn Frye and her husband Les of Oklahoma, Sara Norton and her husband Ben of Illinois, grandchildren, Tabitha (Christian)Tollefson, Dylan Schulenberg, Madison Popejoy, Taiton Bachman, Carson Schulenberg, Bentley Fisher, great-grandchildren, Matthew, Thomas and Tucker Tollefson, baby girl Gryder (June 2025). Jean Marie Cash, age 63, of Atchison, KS, passed away March 2, 2025, at her home.

Jean was born on March 6, 1961, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Weinmann) Kistler. She graduated from Atchison High School.

Jean loved her family and enjoyed working at her various jobs. Jean truly loved life itself and enjoyed every opportunity she was given.

She married Donald E. Cash, and they had a great life together. Jean enjoyed going with Don while he played in a band at different events. Don survives of the home in Atchison. She is also survived by her daughters, Kelli Cash and Kristi Cash; her mother, Dorothy Kistler; a brother, Michael Kistler; two sisters, Julie Burge and Susan Sowers. Her father preceded her in death.

A visitation with family and friends will be held Monday, March 10, 2025, from 5-7:00 pm at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.

Margie Fleskoski, 91, of Falls City, NE, passed away March 5, 2025 at Falls City. She was born August 4, 1933 at Salem, NE to Henry and Fleeda (Stafford) Herold.

She married Joseph P. Fleskoski on July 3, 1951 at Falls City. He passed away May 10, 2009.

Margie was raised at Salem and graduated Salem High School in 1950. Following graduation, she attended Peru State Teachers College for a year. When married the couple established their home in Salem and she worked as a clerk at Fleskoski's Food Basket. Later, she worked as a clerk for the auctions with her husband at Fleskoski's Auction. She and her husband also owned Bi-Rite Liquor for 20 years. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society and the DOES. She was a long-time member of the Falls City Catholic Cemetery Board.

Margie is survived by her children, Susan Catlett and her husband Norm of Ralston, NE, Joe and his wife Chris of Seneca, SC, Mark and his wife Sally of Straussville, NE, Jan Rankin and her husband Tad of Hiawatha, KS, nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Chuck Herold.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Jim Meysenburg as the presiding priest. Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

Janet M. Jacobsen, 88, of the Maple Grove Apartments in Hiawatha, with family by her side passed away March 4, 2025 at Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Janet was born June 9, 1936 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was one of two children born to Neil and Gertrude Thompson Larimer. Her parents divorced at an early age and Janet moved with her mother and brother to California where she grew up and attended school. While living there, she met a serviceman from NE Kansas by the name of Melvin Jordan whom she married January 1, 1954. Mel brought her back to rural northeast Kansas where they lived before making Hiawatha their home where he operated "Mel's Body Shop". To this union two children were born: Patricia and Randy. It was said that the birth of Pat rekindled Janet's parents relationship and they remarried.

She worked various jobs through the years with the longest, most enjoyable being Flair Fold Manufacturing Plant in Hiawatha, working there several years before retiring.

Janet again found someone to share her life with. She married Allen J. Jacobsen, November 20, 1987.Janet gained two daughters, and a son. Janet and Allen lived away from Hiawatha for a time due to his work with the construction business. They spent 32 years together playing cards, listening to his records, and dancing until he died May 15, 2020. A year after his death, Janet moved to Maple Grove Apartments, enjoying her time there making new friends and participating in various activities there. Janet loved animals, particularly dogs. It was not uncommon for her to have a pocketful of dog treats. The dogs came to expect it.

Janet was also preceded in death by her parents, husbands Melvin, Allen, son Randy, his wife Chris, and brother Paul Larimer.

Survivors include a daughter Pat Bearce (Bill), grandchildren: Carma Ricklefs (Jimmy), Lindsey Shannon,Brady Bearce; step children: Melissa Jacobsen, Amy Jacobsen (David Ulferts), Aaron Jacobsen (Deb);
step grandchildren: Eben Kohtz, Anna Ulferts, Anson and Avery Jacobsen; with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister-in-law Dawna Larimer; with nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Janet's life is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2025, at Chapel Oaks FuneralHome, Hiawatha. Shane Spangler will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may sign the register book at the funeral home 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday.

Robert A. "Bob" Brinker, 81, of Seneca, lost his courageous battle against cancer on March 4, 2025 at his home in Seneca with his wife by his side.

Bob was born on April 8, 1943, to Elmer and Luella Hammes Brinker in the heart of Seneca, Kansas. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul Grade and High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1961. Bob's journey into adulthood led him to Capital City Barber College in Topeka, Kansas, where he honed his skills as a barber. He spent his early professional years working in Overland Park, for Wayne's Barber Shop and then at Overland Park Barber Shop. At these establishments is where he first became known for his kind demeanor and dedication to his customers.

On January 26, 1963, Bob married Marilyn Woltkamp at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, a love that endured for over 60 years. Together, they raised three sons and built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared memories.

In 1969, Bob returned to Seneca, where he joined his father at Brinker Furniture and Appliance. When the store closed in 1983, he partnered with his brother, Steve, to open Brinker Home Furnishings, a business that became a cornerstone of the local community for nearly three decades until its closing in 2012. Bob was also a dedicated member of the Seneca community, serving on the City Council for a decade from 1973 to 1983. Bob's life was one that was rooted in family, community, and a love for his work.

Bob had a deep appreciation for baseball, which was reflected in his support and involvement with his three sons—Mark, Darren, and Jason. He cherished every moment spent coaching his boys, from Little League all the way through Legion Baseball. Throughout his life, Bob's love for gardening brought him joy and peace.

Beyond his family and career, Bob was a man of deep faith and devotion. He was a proud member of Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, where he was a member of the St. Joseph Society. His faith was reflected in his role as a communion minister, lay minister, and usher, positions he held with reverence for many years.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Luella Brinker; an infant brother, Daniel; and his brother, Marvin.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; three sons: Mark (Stephanie) of Leawood, Darren (Tina) of Shawnee, and Jason of Bloomington, Illinois; as well as three grandsons: Luke, Nathan, and Jack, and five granddaughters: Haylee, Hannah, Natalie, Madeline, and Gabrielle and a great granddaughter Daniela. He is also survived by his brothers, Steve (Bonnie) of Seneca and Larry (Ginger) of Topeka; and his sisters, Nancy Frehe and Myra (Jim) Runnebaum, both of Seneca; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Beatrice "Bea" Beth (Bennett) Brady, 80, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, surrounded by her children after a brief illness with pancreatic cancer.

Beatrice Beth Brady was born on August 1, 1944, in a farmhouse in Wheaton, Kansas, the daughter of John R. and Eva M. (Shubkagel) Bennett. She attended Wheaton schools, graduated as valedictorian from Wheaton High School in 1962, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting from Park University as a working mother in 1990.
After working for several years for the State of Kansas in Topeka in the early 1960s, she and the late William J. "Bill" Brady were united in marriage on April 8, 1967, at the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas.

After living in Fort Greely, Alaska, during Bill's service in the Army, Bea and Bill settled in Atchison in 1970 and focused on raising their family. Bea embarked on a career as a dedicated federal employee in 1976, serving for 47 years with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army Medical Command as a program analyst at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

She was known for her commitment to her work, her meticulous attention to detail, and the kindness she showed to colleagues and those she served.
A woman of deep faith, Bea was a devoted member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, where she actively participated as a eucharistic minister, choir member, finance committee member, altar society member, and served many years in perpetual adoration. She was a daily communicant until her health prevented it. She also gave her time generously as a volunteer with Catholic Charities, and her blood abundantly as she donated 117 pints in her lifetime - always seeking ways to support those in need.

One of Bea's greatest joys was playing bridge, and she cherished the friendships she built over more than 50 years with her beloved bridge group. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards with them, and passing along her love of games, learning, and vigorous debate.

Bea is survived by her son, Colonel Richard T Brady, USMC (Ret.) of Falls Church, Virginia; two daughters, Anne (Charles) Feise of St. Louis, Missouri, and Carole (Jeremy) Stempien of Scotch Plains, New Jersey; six grandchildren, Katherine Brady, Jack Feise, William Feise, Grace Feise, Bridget Stempien, and Julia Stempien; a brother, Charles (Mary) Bennett of Springfield, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Brady; her parents, John R. and Eva M. Bennett; her siblings, Loretta J. Bennett, Cecelia L. Zoeller, Robert J. Bennett, and James A. Bennett; and her daughter-in-law, Jeanne E. Brady.

Arthur R. Johnson, 95, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, March 3, 2025 at Rest Well Home Plus in Oskaloosa. He was born August 18, 1929 in Council Grove, KS, the son of Leonard Ben and Esther Neal Johnson of rural Alta Vista, KS.

Art grew up on the family farm southeast of Alta Vista. He attended the Biglin Rural grade school and was a 1947 graduate of Alta Vista High School. He was active in sports and 4-H and served as president of his senior class. Sometime during high school, Art began dating Betty Zimmerman. Although Art and Betty wanted to get married right after high school, they honored a promise to Betty's mother to wait until they were 21 years old. They were married on November 22, 1950 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alta Vista. They would celebrate 75 years of marriage this year.

After High School, both Art and Betty taught in one-room rural schools. Art taught at Wabaunsee, Biglin and Garfield rural schools and at St. John Lutheran School in Alma. While teaching, Art also served in the U.S. Army Reserves and in 1951 was called to active duty in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in 1953 as a Staff Sargent. Following his Army service, Art enrolled in Kansas State University while helping his father farm in Alta Vista. He earned a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1958. During this time, his children, Cathy and Kirk were born.

Following graduation, he began a long and distinguished career as an Agricultural Extension Agent. He served in Ford and Shawnee counties before becoming the Director of Extension Services in Jefferson
County in 1960. He retired in 1999 after 40 years of Service. During his tenure he strove to bring innovative methods to farmers and ranchers as well as to the county 4-H program. He was honored with the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award by the National Association of Agricultural Extension Agents for his contributions to agriculture and for his work with 4-H programs. He also served as president of the Kansas Agricultural Extension Association. Art was awarded prizes for his weekly newspaper column he wrote for the Oskaloosa Independent and Valley Falls Vindicator.

Art was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Nortonville. He served in a variety of capacities including Congregational President and Elder and was a long-time Sunday School teacher for the youth. He was also involved in th Oskaloosa community serving on the Tree Board, the Oskaloosa Senior Housing Board and a member of American Legion Post #36. He led the effort to construct the Veteran's Memorial Park in Oskaloosa.

He is survived by his wife Betty of the home and children, Cathy (Rick) Garren, Oskaloosa, and Kirk (Cheryl) Johnson, Topeka, grandchildren, Brady (Megan) Garren, Ryan (Amanda) Garren, Katie (David) Himpel, Kristy (Bill) Kabus, Kyle (Bethany) Johnson, Craig Johnson (fiancé, Kathryn Unruh), and Mark (Emilie) Johnson, and great-grandchildren, Jack, Jordi, Keira and Carter Garren, Billy and Abby Kabus, Paisley and Nolan Himpel, Luke, Matthew, Maisy, Claire, Millie and Annalise Johnson, his brother-in-law, Victor Zimmerman and three nieces and six nephews. He was preceded by his parents, and siblings, Mary Kathryn Thowe, Ben Johnson and Helen Grensing.

Glenn Dale Blandin, of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away at Maple Heights Nursing Facility on February 10, 2025. He was 92 years old.

Glenn was born to Charles and Hazel Hare Blandin on January 16, 1933 in Burrton, Kansas. At the age of twelve Glenn was adopted by Abe and Genevieve Enns also of Burrton.

Glen joined the Air Force on August 5, 1950 at the age of seventeen. He was honorably discharged on November 9, 1953. Upon his discharge, Glenn finished high school and graduated from Burrton High School in May of 1955.
Glenn married Merlyn Ann Romig of Mt. Hope, Kansas on December 6, 1955 in Seagraves, Texas.
Glenn held many jobs over his lifetime but being an over-the-road truck driver was his favorite. Glenn loved the open road and traveling the United States, visiting many states.

Glenn was preceded in death by his biological and adoptive parents, his ex-wife Merlyn, his brothers: Jack, Charles, Harold, Dean, Donald, Jerry, Richard; his sisters: Doris, Shirley, Patsy, Charlene, and Phyllis.

Glenn is survived by his children: Glenn Dale Blandin, Georgetown, Texas, Jeff (Mabel) Blandin, Hutchinson, Kansas, Tammy (James) Adams, Hiawatha, Kansas, Terry (Brian) McMillian, Hillsboro, Kansas, Jenny Jaquet, Hutchinson, Kansas, brother Gary of Texas, and a sister Kay of Nevada.

Robert Paul Kennedy, 92, beloved husband and father, died March 1, 2025.

Robert (Bob) was born April 4,1932 in Falls City, Nebraska to Burdette Franklin and Alice Louise Kennedy.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, sister, Maxine Kennedy Hefty, brother Roger Wayne Kennedy and his beloved wife, Bonnie. He is survived by daughters Marsha Kennedy Foryt and Marta Kennedy of Greensboro, NC, son, Michael Kennedy of Waterbury, CT, grandsons, Jerad (Victoria) of Milford, CT, Derrik (Kelly) of Old Saybrook, CT, great-grandchildren, Caleb, Eisley, Quinn and Owen Kennedy also in Connecticut.

After graduating from Falls City High School in 1950, Bob attended Commercial Extension School of Business in Omaha, NE and was later employed in April 1951 in the accounting department of The Union Pacific Railroad headquarters in Omaha. In September 1951, Bob joined the U.S. Navy Reserve, attended a training program at the Naval Air Station at Olathe, Kansas, received the rate of Airman and applied for active duty with the Navy.

On November 9, 1952, Bonnie Hatch, the love of Bob's life, and he were married. Now on active duty at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas, they lived there until 1954. While there, daughter Marsha was born. The family later moved to Lincoln, NE and Bob attended the University of Nebraska graduating in 1958 with a BS degree in Business Administration. The family now of five, moved to Rochester, NY where Bob was employed by Eastman Kodak Company in the financial division.

Bob joined the Barnard Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He served 2 years as President of the organization, played an instrument in the fire department band and marched with the band in the 1969 Tournament of Roses Parade. In 1971 he joined the Charlotte Corinthian Masonic Lodge. The family became members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and he and Bonnie sang in the choir.

During his 31 years with Kodak, Bob worked in accounting and auditing positions conducting numerous audits of company subsidiaries around the world. He transferred to the international division and worked for 9 years in financial management in subsidiary units in Paris France, Cape Town South Africa, Bogota Colombia and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Bob retired from Kodak in 1989, they moved to Hilton Head Island SC in 1990 and he started Kennedy Business Services. They sang in the choir at the United Methodist Church. Bob was an active member with the Unanimity Masonic Lodge serving as Master of the Lodge for 1 year and Secretary for 3 years.

In 1997, the relocated to Aiken SC. Bob maintained his business in Hilton Head and expanded in Aiken until retiring in 2022. Bonnie and Bob enjoyed golfing, traveling and taking care of their dogs. They joined First Presbyterian Church of Aiken and sang in the Chancel Choir. Bob transferred his membership to Aiken Masonic Lodge and served as the Secretary for 16 years.

The death of Bonnie in 2020 nearly 75 years after they first met and 67 years of marriage made Bob's last years very difficult. Bob volunteered for several years at Aiken County Animal Shelter to share his love and affection for dogs to help make their journeys a bit more pleasant.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, March 6th from 6 until 8 o'clock at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home with Masonic Rites accorded at 6 o'clock.

The funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Dr. Christopher Erde officiating.

In Falls City, a graveside service and interment will be in Steele Cemetery on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at 10:00 AM.

Barbara Eloise Slimmer, 90, of Holton, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at the Pines of Holton Assisted Living Center.

She was born January 24, 1935, in rural Jackson County, Kansas, the daughter of Russell McKenzie and Edith Mae (Brown) Slimmer. She attended grade school at Carmel grade school before attending classes in Holton at both Colorado and Central grade schools. She graduated from Holton High School in 1953. She was a member of the Holton United Methodist Church and the Holton Memorial VFW Auxiliary - 1367.

Following high school, she worked briefly at Russell's Dime Store in Holton, as an operator for the telephone company in Holton, and for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Topeka. Following her job at Blue Cross she began a long career with the federal government working first at the depot at Forbes Air Force base. In 1960 she transferred to Fort Riley where she worked until 1976. Her next position was at Fort Leavenworth where she retired in 1992. Following retirement, she moved back to Holton and worked part time at the Koger Variety store on the Holton square.

Until her eyesight failed, Barbara spent many hours in the Holton Dairy Queen writing letters to loved ones. Nephews, nieces and others enjoyed receiving her long letters around the time of their birthdays.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Mack Slimmer, an infant Mildred Slimmer, Gordon Slimmer, Lawrence Slimmer, and Norma (Slimmer) Chatman. She is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, great, and great-great nephews and nieces.

Ann Evelyn Bernadette (Carten) Berggren, 90, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on March 30, 1934, in Boston, Massachusetts to Leo A. and Della M. (Reid) Carten. She attended Boston Public Schools until 1947 when her family moved to New Brunswick, Canada. While living in Canada, Ann attended Fredericton High School in New Brunswick until 1952 when she returned to Boston. She completed her education at Roxbury Memorial High School for girls in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

On October 29, 1953, Ann was united in marriage to Robert Berggren in Boston, Massachusetts. To this union two daughters, Patricia Ann and Barbara Sue, were born. The couple began their marriage living in Ashland, Nebraska from 1954-1966. They moved to Wahoo in 1966, Stromsburg in 1968, and moved their final time to Humboldt, Nebraska in 1970. Ann began working in Humboldt as a cook for the Colonial Acres Nursing Home. She later became the school lunch manager for Humboldt Public Schools in 1972 and worked there until retirement in December of 1987. Ann was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women's Group in Humboldt, past mother advisor for Rainbow Girls, past Matron and member of the Humboldt Order of Eastern Star Chapter #234, and past president and life member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Ann passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the age of ninety years, ten months, and twenty-nine days. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Mary, Peg, Christine, and Ruth, and brothers Leo and John Carten.

Ann is survived by her loving husband of 71 years Robert "Bob" Berggren of Humboldt, daughters: Patricia Kanel and husband Jay of rural Humboldt, Barbara O'Connor and husband Jack of Blaine, KS; grandchildren: Jayson Kanel of rural Humboldt, Michael Kanel and wife Kari of rural Humboldt, Kelly Shupp and her husband Jed of Humboldt, Patrick O'Connor and his wife Dom of Blaine, KS; great-grandchildren: Kassidy, Morgan, and Blaine Kanel of rural Humboldt, William and Emma Shupp of Humboldt, Liam and T.J. Donna Lee Goins, 92, of Seneca, Kansas, went peacefully to the Lord on March 2, 2025.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 5, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell. Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Donna's remarkable life.

The funeral service will take place on Thursday, March 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Axtell United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Axtell. The Mock Family Singers will honor Donna's memory with music, including beloved hymns such as "Lord of the Dance," "I, the Lord of Sea and Sky," and "There's Something About That Name." Born on September 22, 1932, near Douglas, Nebraska, Donna was the daughter of LeRoy Alvin "Hap" and Vera Mae (Brugman) Sugden. She spent her childhood in Nebraska before moving to Randolph, Iowa, where she graduated from Randolph High School in 1949. She briefly worked for Mutual of Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.

A blind date introduced Donna to Lloyde Goins, who was on crutches recovering from an injury at the time—an ironic twist given that Donna was not fond of dancing. They were united in marriage on January 6, 1951, in a small ceremony before Lloyde reported to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Following his honorable discharge, they moved around for various jobs until settling in Axtell where Lloyde joined the local REC.

Donna was known for her culinary skills and her warm-hearted nature, ensuring no one ever went hungry. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, deeply involved in the activities of her church community. From preparing meals for church events to serving as secretary for the United Methodist Women, her life revolved around her faith and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Lloyde, and her sister, Arlene Mae Tackett.

Donna is survived by her daughters: Pamela (Clyde) Mock of Topeka, Kansas, and Candy (Gene) Schmits of Seneca; her grandchildren: Brice (Amanda) Schmits of Wichita, Kansas, Jason (fiancé Amber Lord) Schmits of Lawrence, Kansas, and Shelly (Brent) Smith of Seneca; as well as three great-grandchildren: Liam Schmits, Evelyn Schmits, and Lenora Smith.

Joel Robert Hutchins, MD, Holton, Kansas passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025 at the The Pines in Holton, Kansas at the age of 75. Joel was born to in Hot Springs, Arkansas on July 7, 1949, the son of Robert Harold Hutchins and Aletha Florence Barrow Hutchins.

While the majority of his young life was spent in Germany and Seattle Washington (where his father was active duty in the military), fate would bring Joel and his family back to his mother's hometown of Denison, Kansas in 1966, where he would finish his high school education. It was during this time that he met his eventual-wife, Becky Lederer Hutchins. In first-kiss lore befitting a marriage that would span 53 years, the two shared their first kiss as homecoming king and queen in 1966.

An athlete and competitor at heart, Joel played on both the football and baseball teams while attending college at Washburn University. As much a patriot as a competitor, Joel's desire to serve his community and country was first demonstrated through participation in R.O.T.C. during his time at Washburn. Upon graduation he underwent pilot training and proudly served with the US Air Force from 1971 to 1976, with his military career including service in the Vietnam Conflict. During this period, Joel asked for Becky's hand and the two were married on May 29, 1971. Becky later joined Joel and the spent their early part of their marriage living in both Taiwan and the Philippines.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Joel returned to school with the goal of becoming a family practice physician. He graduated from KU Medical School in 1987, and he and his family relocated to Holton, Kansas in order for the newly-minted "Dr Hutchins" to serve the community and surrounding area by opening Westside Family Practice.

Joel served as a family practice physician for 35 years. He was the district coroner for many years and served on the Kansas Board of Healing Arts from 2013 to 2019. Indicative of his commitment to serving his community, Joel's career as hospice director would come to a close only when he himself became unable to avoid a hospital bed of his own.

Joel was an active member of the Evangel Methodist Church serving for many years as an adult Sunday school teacher and was an active member of the Holton Optimist Club.

Joel loved travel, loved history, loved people, loved food (especially rice crispy treats) and most importantly, Joel loved his family and friends. He felt a true calling to care for everyone around him and a deep sense of pride and love for the Holton community.

Joel is survived by his wife Becky and their two daughters Jennifer Sherber (Ben) of Fernandina Beach, Florida and Emily Esparza (Tony) of Shawnee, Kansas and his sister, Linda Bohnenkemper of Holton, KS. Joel's true pride and joy were his beloved grandchildren Asa, Heath, Evan, and Soren.

Joel fought a brave battle against Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme. He was fortunate enough to keep his quick wit, sense of humor and faculties, even as his body weakened from the aggressive disease and his extensive treatment. Through it all, he was extremely thankful for the care he received from the physicians at St Luke's Hospital, Mayo Clinic - Jacksonville, and most importantly his colleagues and friends at the Holton Community Hospital.

Joel and his family would like to thank Mark and Debbie Knouft and family for the care and support they provided throughout Joel's battle.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wanda Potter, and his brother Jerry Hutchins.

Paul Leroy Scheid, 100, of Whiting, KS, passed away Friday, February 28, 2025, at his home with family at his side. He was born August 29, 1924 in rural Holton, KS, the middle son of Virgil Jesse and Daisy Irene (Hollenbeck) Scheid.

Paul graduated from Bennett High School in 1942 in Bennett, CO. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1943-1946, during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged as a Tech Sargent.

He married Betty Marie Cochren of Whiting on October 3, 1947 in Hiawatha, KS. She preceded him in death on November 14, 2020, after 73 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Daisy Scheid and 2 brothers, Earl and Ralph Scheid.

As a farmer for the majority of his life, he also retired from the United States Postal Service as the Whiting Postmaster after 31 years.

Paul was a member of the Whiting United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, V.F.W. Post 1367 and 50+ year member of Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include his 3 children, Paula S. Scheid (Stephen Rosengren) of Topeka, KS, Marcia Jo Scheid Watkins (Galen) of Whiting, KS and Mark W. Scheid (Glenda Herl) of Topeka, KS; 5 grandchildren, Joshua Watkins (Ericka), Zachary Watkins (Cori), Matthew Watkins (Kristin), Megan Martin (Anthony) and Jared Herl (Allison), 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grand-daughter.

Samuel J. Liberty, 79, of Falls City, NE, passed away March 1, 2025 at Falls City. He was born April 20, 1945 at Kansas City, MO to Ralph and Hazel (Miller) Liberty.

He married Mary Jo Simpson on July 17, 2003 at Falls City.

Sam was raised at Rulo and graduated Sacred Heart High School in 1963. Following graduation, he was drafted into the U. S. Army. Following his honorably discharge he worked for the U. S. Postal Service and owned a rent to own store in Albuquerque, NM. He later took employment as a truck driver, moving to Lawson, MO in 2002. When married the couple made their home in Falls City. He retired from Crete Carriers in 2010 and then drove part time for area farmers. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Sam is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, children, Lance Liberty, Jennifer Hood, Jonathan Liberty, Samantha Jeter, step-children, Charlie Liberty and Julie Frederick and her husband Keith, brother, Arthur, sister, Eva Smith and her husband Lee and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Raymond, Robert, Donald, Terry, Harold, Richard, Ralph, Jr., sisters, Myrtle Clark, Blanche Van Bebber, Carol Tackett, Sandra Coonce and Catherine Rowell.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Rulo Cemetery with Father Jim Meysenburg officiating. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.
