Helen “Irene” Neibling, age 90, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at Maple Heights in Hiawatha, Kansas.

She was born to Leroy and Mary (Melvin) Johnson at the family farm home near Gravity, Iowa, on April 24, 1929. After graduating from Gravity High School in 1948, Irene completed one year of nursing school in St. Joseph, Missouri. While she was working at Missouri Methodist Hospital, one of her patients, Marjorie Neibling, introduced Irene to Charles, her son.  Charles and Irene were married on September 18, 1949, at the Gravity Christian Church. They lived and farmed near Highland, Kansas. They were blessed with three sons. Irene liked growing flowers and reading, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and using her gift of hospitality. In 1972, she placed her trust in Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She served as a Bible study leader, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, and Women's Council president at Highland United Methodist-Presbyterian Church. Irene also volunteered at the local food pantry and the Iowa, Sac and Fox Mission Museum.

Charles and Irene moved to Highland in 1994. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before Charles passed away in July, 2005. Irene was also preceded in death by her parents, sister Clara Tribolet, and brothers Ivan and Brice Johnson.

She is survived by her sons and their wives, Ed and Judy Neibling, Orlando, Florida; David and Margo Neibling, Cottage Grove, Minnesota; and Raymond and Jeanette Neibling, Highland; nine grandchildren and three great-granddaughters; brothers and their wives,  Edward and Millie Johnson, Gravity; and Russel and Shirley Johnson, Stephenville, Texas; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Harvey and Mary Ellen Neibling, Highland; Lorraine Neibling, Sabetha, Kansas; and Jerry and Carol Neibling,  Highland; plus many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Celebration of Irene’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland, with Tony French officiating.  Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday where the family will meet that afternoon from 4 until 6.

 Larry Dale Hladky, 59, of Holton, KS, passed away Friday, February 28, 2020 at the Holton Community Hospital as a result of a vehicle accident. He was born July 9, 1960 in Onaga, KS, the son of Bailey E. Hladky and Rose M. Moore.

Larry graduated from Holton High School in 1978, after high school he attended Kaw Valley Vo-Tech. He worked at Bud’s Tire in Holton and then owned and operated Larry’s Tire Service for several years. He also worked for J-6 Pig Farm in Corning and was a farmer/stockman.

Larry was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He had been a member of the Holton Jaycees Club and was a Volunteer Fire Fighter for the Mayetta Fire Department.

He married Pamela S. Jackson, they later divorced. He married Shawna R. Pence on October 22, 2016 in Holton; she survives of the home.

Other survivors include his parents Bailey “Boots” and Rose Hladky of Soldier, KS; a son Larry Michael Hladky (Rochelle) of Lawrence, KS; a daughter, Brandy N. Davidson of Topeka, KS; 4 sisters, Lisa L. Allen of Soldier, Esther K. Essary of Holton, Sherri A. Immenschuh (Larry) of Soldier and Jada L. Nicklay of Muskogee, OK; a brother, Roy J. Hladky (Gertrud) of Germany; 4 stepchildren, Joe Russell of Holton, Amy L. Russell of Lincoln, NE, Kristina Chaney (Matt) of West Des Moines, IA and Lisa Russell of Holton. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren.

Irene L. Ernzen, 91, of Atchison, KS, formerly of Circleville, KS, passed away Friday, February 28, 2020 at her home in Atchison. She was born October 5, 1928 in Harveyville, KS, the daughter of Clifford and Freda (Keene) Lindsey.

Irene graduated from Potter High School. She had lived in the Circleville area since 1984 and moved to Atchison in 2015.

She was a homemaker, she worked as a welder for Rockwell International in Atchison and as a cook at The Coach House in Holton. Irene was a member of the Circleville First Christian Church.

She married Robert L. Ernzen on November 29, 1947 in St. Patrick, KS; he preceded her in death on September 20, 2005, after 58 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine F. Wilson; 2 grandsons, Chris Ernzen and Charles R. Carskaddon; 2 sisters, Lora Mae Boeh and Jean Harding and a brother, Clyde White.

Survivors include her 8 children, Lynette M. Ernzen of Atchison, KS, Clifford J. Ernzen of Thayer, KS, Robert E. Ernzen (Kathy) of St. Joseph, MO, Michael W. William "Bill" J. Kuhlman, 76, of Seneca, Kansas passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at his home.

Bill was born on January 13, 1944 in Kelly, Kansas the son of Louis and Irene (Vock) Kuhlman. He attended Kelly Schools until 8th grade. He worked on the farm with his dad, and was a janitor at the Kelly Schools. Bill went on to work for a number of local grain elevators and then went to work for Nemaha County in the maintenance department.

Bill was united in marriage to Darlene Shump on September 3, 1966 at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. To this union three children were born.

Bill was most proud of raising and selling registered Angus bulls. He also owned and operated Old West Feeds with his wife. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and collecting sports trading cards. Bill was a lifetime member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. In 2009, Bill and Darlene sold their farm and moved to Seneca.

Bill was a caring and giving person; he continued that in death through the gift of body donation for science.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Marvin Kuhlman.

Bill is survived by his wife, Darlene of the home; his two sons, Tim (Diane) Kuhlman of Seneca, KS and Rick Kuhlman (Luciana Hooper) of Olathe, KS; his daughter, Sherri Routh of Fort Worth, TX; his brother, John (Edna) Kuhlman of Tecumseh, KS; seven grandchildren, Tad Kuhlman, Zach Kuhlman, Katie Kuhlman, Josh Kuhlman, Madelynne Routh, Gabriella Routh and Emma Kuhlman.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, Kansas. Katherine Mae Overfield Lear, of rural White Cloud, died February 26, 2020 at The Pines South in Hiawatha, Kansas.  

She was born to Verner and Rose (Gladhart) Overfield on May 3, 1923 on a farm in Irving Township, Brown County.   She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1941 and then graduated from Highland College in 1943.  Katherine taught in several schools in Brown County before she married Carl Lear on September 7, 1947. They moved into their home on the Lear farm soon after and remained there until October 1996 when they moved to Hiawatha. 

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, and daughter-in-law Debra Lear.

Katherine was an active member of Mount Zion Methodist Church and then at Zion United Methodist Church.   She played piano, taught both children and adults, and loved her life on the farm.  Her column, “News from the Farm” ran in the Hiawatha Daily World for many years.  Her Christian faith was an integral part of her life.

Katherine is survived by her sister Marian Curtis of Eudora KS, sons Jim (wife Sheryl) and John Lear of rural White Cloud; Grandchildren Jessica Ezell (fiancé Jeremy Enns) Kansas City MO, Andrew Lear of Hiawatha, Anna Johnson (husband Jeremiah) of Lawrence KS, Caleb Lear of rural Horton and Tessa Lear (Derek Wilke) of Kansas City MO; great grandchildren Ruth and Ronen Johnson, and special step granddaughters Ashley and Samantha Rudder; Nieces and nephews Larry Curtis, Cynthia Petrehn, Bonnie Reetz, Jerry Bryan and Bea Pray; and numerous great nieces and nephews.  

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 12 noon Sunday. The family will meet with friends from 5 until 6:30 Sunday evening.

A Celebration of Katherine’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Monday, March 2, at Zion United Methodist Church, northeast of Robinson.  Pastor Darlene Sheffer will officiate.  Interment will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Cathy Jolene Cannon, 61, of Goff, Kansas died at her home after a long battle of cancer on February 25, 2020, surrounded by her family.

Cathy was born on May 26, 1958 in Topeka Kansas to Bernard D. and Joan M. (Enneking) Palmer. Cathy grew up in Seneca, attended Seneca Public grade school and graduated from Nemaha Valley High School in 1976. When she finished high school, she worked in the Nursing Home Health Industry, working at Crestview Manor and Sabetha Manor. She also was employed at Sac and Fox.

Cathy and Carl D. Cannon were married in Hiawatha, Kansas on May 28, 2007. He survives of the home. She and Carl resided in Goff, Kansas where she served on City Council before becoming Mayor in 2017. Cathy owned and worked in her little general store prior to becoming ill. She loved working in the store and visiting with the local folks and meeting new friends. She also very active with the Goff food pantry and PRIDE. Cathy dedicated her life to her family, friends and helping others.

She is preceded in death a son, Bernard Harley Palmer; by her father, Bernard D. on March 21, 1966; and her mother Joan M. on July 22, 2007.

She is survived by her loving husband, Carl Cannon and their children Baron Large (Heather) of Goff, Jeremy Large (Rachel) of Sabetha, Andy Palmer (Kristen) of Topeka, Joey Large (Kaci) of Sabetha, Brian Cannon (Savannah) of Council Grove, Melissa Huntsman of Columbus, Ohio, Brandi Stubbs of Columbus, Ohio, and Staci Bernard (Travis) of Beatrice, Nebraska. She is also survived by one sister, Jodi Lynn) Brashwitz of Cleveland, Ohio; 22 grandchildren; great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Edward Dubach died February 25th, 2020 at the conclusion of his 93rd birthday at The Pines in Holton, Kansas. Kenneth was born in Wathena, Kan. on February 25th, 1927 to parents Edward and Lois (Clinton) Dubach. His family moved to a farm west of Troy, Kan. where he learned to work hard.                                      

Kenneth married his wife Delorise “Imogene” (Waller) Dubach of Ponca City, Okla. On May 6th, 1951 following a storybook courtship. He liked to say “I wore out my car” driving back and forth to Oklahoma courting his future wife.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in the 96th Battalion and served in Korean War, 1951-1953. He frequently told the story of returning to Fort Carson, Colo.  His beloved wife having driven through the night to receive him at 6:30 in the morning. Like many veterans, he talked little of the war until the last years of his life, but he is honored for his service and sacrifices for his family, and country. Upon his return, he and Imogene bought a home in Troy, Kan. where he lived for 67 years of his life. There they raised two children as he worked for the local feed store and grain elevator until their closure. He then opened and ran Master Mix feed store from his home for 11 years. He received many recognitions for sales. He also repaired and sold bicycles on the side, a venture he enjoyed with his son and bred dogs, which he enjoyed with his daughter.

Kenneth was known as a generous, steady presence in the community. He retired in 1995, but remained active for many years. Kenneth was highly devoted to his family, work, and community. He often volunteered to sing “The Ole’ Gray Mare” or “Home of the Range” at all of his grandkids’ events, and was never without a tease and a laugh. He will be missed by all.                      

He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Imogene Dubach, his parents Edward Oscar and Lois Dubach, siblings Lavern Peden and Ruth Peden, and sister-in-law Shirley Weber (Jerral). He is survived by his children Lee Ann Gooderl (Les) of Holton, Kan., and James Dubach (Rhonda) of Oklahoma City, Okla., grandchildren Marie Tinsley (Jacob) of Larned, Kan., Brianna Morris (Brent) of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kate Acton (Bryce) of Platte City, Mo., Aaron Dubach (Brooke) of Houston, Tx., and Connor Gooderl (Leah) of Colorado Spring, Colo.,  brother Jerry Dubach of Troy, Kan., and many loved great-grandchildren.

Philemon “Phil” Gutierrez, Jr., 83, of Holton, KS, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Holton Community Hospital. He was born February 8, 1937 in Topeka, KS, the son of Philemon Sr. and Marciana Llamas-Gutierrez.

He attended Lincoln Grade School, East Topeka Jr. High School and Topeka High School. Phil earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Washburn University in 1971. He earned his Masters of Social Work from the University of Kansas in 1973, while attending college he worked for the Topeka State Hospital, VA Hospital and U.S. Postal Service.

Phil was an avid Jayhawk Basketball fan and life member of Washburn University and Kansas University Alumni Association.

He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. While in the Navy, he earned his G.E.D. Phil later retired from the United States Army Reserve as a Major.

Upon graduating from KU, he went to work for the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons as a Correctional Treatment Specialist. Retiring as Regional Assistant Correctional Programs Administrator on October 31, 1994, after 35 years of service.

After retirement, he was a Disaster Volunteer for the American Red Cross in San Francisco, CA, Red Cross Office Manager in Livermore, CA and a Director for pre-released center for federal offenders in Oakland, CA.

He was a longtime member of the Holton American Legion Post 44 and Holton V.F.W. Post 1367. He was also a Hospice Social Worker for NEK Multicounty Home Health and Hospice in Hiawatha.

Phil married Rosemary Rocha on December 23, 1955, they divorced.

He married Colene L. Moser on February 14, 1978 in Long Beach, CA. They celebrated over 41 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Colene Moser-Gutierrez of the home, his 6 children, Marciana D. Gutierrez, Jennifer Gutierrez, Angela Gutierrez and Matthew G. Gutierrez all of Topeka, KS, Dominic A. Gutierrez, Sr. of Kingwood, TX and Martin J. Gutierrez (Kimberly) of Fort Worth, TX; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Fernando Dexter Gutierrez (infant) and Leon T. Gutierrez; sisters, Belia G. Lowe, Sylvia G. Lopez and Corliss Gutierrez.

Philemon “Phil” Gutierrez, Jr., 83, of Holton, KS, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Holton Community Hospital. He was born February 8, 1937 in Topeka, KS, the son of Philemon Sr. and Marciana Llamas-Gutierrez.

Steven John “Brady” Edwards, 79, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on August 24, 1940, in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Ralph M. and Stella (Woolsey) Edwards.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country for two years before re-enlisting in the Army.  Brady finished his military service by serving two years in the U.S. Army.  On December 27, 1958, Brady was united in marriage to Mary Krei in Worland, Wyoming.  To this union two children, Ralph and Melinda, were born.  The couple raised their family in various states including Wyoming, Arkansas and Nebraska.  Brady began his career by driving truck and working as a mechanic.  He later owned and operated “The Other Place” in Otoe, Nebraska with his wife Mary.  The couple then owned “The Dunbar Bar & Grill” and later moved to Humboldt where they owned and operated “Country Kitchen”.  After leaving the restaurant business, Brady went back to truck driving where he owned and drove his own trucks.

Brady passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020, at the Pawnee County Medical Center in Pawnee City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of seventy-nine years and six months.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Mary (Krei) Edwards.

Brady is survived by his children: Ralph Edwards of Otoe, NE; Melinda McGarrah and husband Billie of Decatur, AR; grandchildren: Tara Edwards of Syracuse, NE; Nicole Edwards of Lincoln, NE; Shawn McGarrah of Decatur, AR; Shanon McGarrah of Colcard, OK; 9 great-grandchildren; step-sister Joan (Ron) Johnson of Granby, MO; sister-in-law Zona (Jerry) Hengel of Hixson, TN; a brother Robert Krei of Helena, MT; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2020, at The Humboldt Cemetery with Pastor Tim Llewellyn officiating.

Debra K. “Debbie” Clark, 65, of Holton, died Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at her home near Holton.

She was born September 27, 1954 at Horton, the daughter of Richard and Darlene Christie Bruns.  She graduated from Holton High School in 1973 and from Kaw Area Technical School in Topeka.

Debbie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holton and a former member and President of the Pilot Club of Holton.  She was also a 4-H Leader and the Japanese Exchange Coordinator for 4-H.

She was a medical transcriptionist for Holton Community Hospital and other medical groups.  She also was the Holton Schools Band Aide for many years, was secretary at the First United Methodist Church, worked at Kanza Mental Health Center, Kansas Sports Medicine and at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home.

She married Michael Humphries in 1973.  He preceded her in death in 1978.  She married Gene Clark on September 14, 1979 in Holton.  He survives, of the home.

Debbie was also preceded in death by her father, Richard Bruns.

Other survivors include a son, Matthew Clark, Manhattan; three daughters, Christi Schumaker (Samuel), Whiting, Kimberly Clark, Holton, and Elizabeth Dove (David), Branson, MO; a sister, Cindy Butler (Tim), Huntersville, NC; and eight grandchildren, Madison, Addy, Comyn and Kara Schumaker, Monte and Brock Mitchell, and Breckin and Aubrey Dove.

Timothy Lorn “Tim” Walker, 52, of Holton, KS, passed away Monday, February 24, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born March 27, 1967 in Onaga, KS, the son of Merlin Walker and Shirley Lewis.

Tim graduated from Holton High School in 1985 and attended Topeka Tech School and John Deere University.

He was a construction worker and worked as a John Deere Master Service Technician for 20 plus years. Tim worked for Caldwell’s John Deere and Heritage Tractor, both in Topeka, KS.

He loved spending time with his family. Tim loved music, he played the guitar, drums and was an aspiring singer. He also enjoyed his family, fishing and sports, his favorite teams being the Chiefs, Saints and Cowboys.

He married Trisha Delp-Robinson, they later divorced.

Alicia Marie Keegan, 55, of Baileyville, Kansas died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Alicia was born on April 16, 1964 in Marysville to Ken and Arleta Schmitz Martin. She attended St. Gregory’s Catholic School and graduated from Marysville High School in 1982. She went to work for Merry Marshall Manor for a short time during her youth. Alicia was later employed by CR Industries in Seneca, there she met Patrick.

On September 15, 1990, Alicia married Patrick G. Keegan at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Marysville. She continued to work at CR for a couple more years; but then to this union they added two sons and a daughter, so she made the choice to be a “stay at home Mom.” She was a dedicated mother first and foremost; she treasured her children.  Alicia also ran a small day care out of her home.

Alicia was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Altar Society and was the Director of the Junior-Senior Religious Education and CYO Sponsor. She participated in Relay for Life, was a member of the KANZA Chapter of OCTA and loved her volunteer work. Alicia had many interests and hobbies-- genealogy, reading, puzzles and gardening to name a few.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ken Martin and her father-in-law, Bill Keegan.

She is survived by her husband of 29 ½ years, Patrick; two sons, Donovan Keegan of Baileyville and Shea Keegan of Seneca; a daughter Kiera (Jordan Pulliam) Keegan of Cherokee, Kansas; her mother, Arleta Martin of Marysville; siblings, Kirk (Jodi) Martin of Marysville, Jason (Theresa) Martin of Belleview, Nebraska and Quinn (Terah) Martin of Marysville; six nieces and five nephews; her mother-in-law, Carol Keegan of Baileyville; and a brother-in-law, Jim (Barb) Keegan of Hemingford, Nebraska.

 Rosaries will be prayed at 2 and 7 PM on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Joey Lavere “Joe” Fund, 49, of Topeka, KS, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2020 at his home after a courageous battle with brain cancer, with family by his side. He was born November 4, 1970 in Holton, KS, son of James Lavere “Jim” Fund and Marsha Elaine Patterson.

 Joe graduated from Jackson Heights High School in 1989 and attended K-State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He lived over 23 years in Topeka and previously in Holton and Manhattan.

Joe was a Project Manager for the National Agriculture Biosecurity Center through K-State for over 10 years. He also worked for the State of Kansas Water Department as Chief Fiscal Officer for over 10 years.

He married Andrea Adair Newman on September 18, 1993 in Manhattan, KS. They celebrated over 26 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Andrea of the home; 3 children, Cody Fund of Seattle, WA, Ashten Jackson (Josh) of Manhattan, KS and Colton Fund of the home; his father, Jim Fund (June) of Horton, KS; 2 sisters, Marsene Feldt (Nathan) of Lawrence, KS and Charlene Moran (Richard) of Topeka, KS; a brother, Scott Fund of Holton, KS; 2 grandchildren, Ava and Liam Jackson and a large extended family.

Helen M. Knabe, 79, of Hiawatha, died Friday night, February 21, 2020, at Maple Heights Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. She had been a resident of Vintage Park for many years.

Helen was born on July 30, 1940 in Kilgore, Texas, one of nine children born to Sidney S. Long, Sr. and Effie Loden Long. She grew up and attended schools in Kilgore, graduating from high school in 1958.

She met her future husband, Wayne, while working at a movie theater as he attended LeTourneau Vo-Tech in Longview, Texas. They were married on April 10, 1959 in Longview and began farming near Edgerton, Kansas. In 1963, they moved to a farm outside of Hiawatha where they farmed and raised livestock.

Helen was a longtime member of Bethany United Church of Christ where she belonged to the Women’s Guild. She volunteered with Mt. Zion Rustlers 4-H Club, and later worked at Coast-to-Coast in Hiawatha. She was a published author of her beloved poems, and her creative abilities were an inspiration to many. Helen was a graduate of Highland Community College. Education was important to her, and she ensured that all her children graduated with college degrees.

Survivors include daughters Cheryl Knabe of Galloway Township, NJ, Janet Rapp of Gladstone, MO, Karen McCune (Bill) of Plainville, KS, and son Christopher Knabe (Ann) of Hiawatha; eight grandchildren: Matthew McCune (Monica) of Plainville, Justin and Colt McCune of Plainville, Ryan Kraemer of Everett, WA, Caitlyn Kraemer of Galloway Township, Keagan and Jessica Rapp of Gladstone and Katherine Knabe of Hiawatha; two great-grandchildren: Samuel and Ayden McCune of Plainville; two sisters: Margaret Long of Texas and Catherine Long of New Mexico; sister-in-law Donna Moll (David) of Olathe, KS and brother-in-law Dr. Virgil Gonzalez of Tyler, TX, and beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Mary Gonzalez, Beverly Spillane, Sidney S. Long, Jr., Dorothy Smith, Martha Long and infant sister Theresa Long.

JoAnn Hollis, 91, of Powhattan, KS, formerly of Goff, KS, passed away Friday, February 21, 2020 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha. She was born October 15, 1928 in Goff, KS, the daughter of Vern and Pearl (Merritt) Monhollon.

JoAnn graduated from Goff High School in 1946 and she earned her Teaching Degree from Emporia Teachers College.

She was a school teacher for country schools in Atchison County. JoAnn also worked for Slimaker Dress Factory for 20 years and she owned and operated JoAnn’s Beauty Salon in Goff for 20 years.

JoAnn was a member of the Goff United Methodist Church, Goff Women’s Club, United Methodist Women and served on the State Board for Kansas Federated Women’s Club.

She married Raymond Lee Hollis on October 18, 1947 in Goff, KS; he preceded her in death on April 21, 2006, after over 50 years of marriage. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Ernestine Kerr and Jean Rutz, and a son-in-law David Werner.

 Survivors include 2 daughters, Jennifer Mueseler (Frank) of Powhattan, KS and Jodene Werner of Tecumseh, NE; a sister, Pat Smith of Bloomfield, KY; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandsons.

Robert (Bob) FrancIs Buser, 78, peacefully passed away on February 20, 2020 at home surrounded by family.  He was born at Sabetha, Kansas on May 16, 1941.  He was one of six children of Gerald and Caroline (Stoltzenberger) Buser.

He was a lifelong resident in the Fairview/Fidelity/Sabetha areas.  He attended Fairview schools, graduating in 1959.  He attended Highland Community College and played football during the 1960-61 school year.  

He married Ellen Louise Tilton on June 15, 1963.  They raised their 3 children and farmed in the Fairview area until 1984.  At that time, they sold the farm and moved to Sabetha to make their home.  

His love of farming lasted a lifetime, and he continued to work in and around the farming community.  He worked with many friends and businesses in the area throughout his life to help with planting, harvest, haying, hauling grain, and fertilizer or just to offer advice whenever needed. 

He worked at Berwick Oil, Co., serving in the Manager position for many years.  He was a school bus driver in Sabetha School District, worked in the bus barn, and enjoyed driving sports teams to many of their games and activities.  He was an avid Sabetha Bluejays fan.

He had a love for sports and enjoyed coaching his sons, watching his grandchildren play and coach, and attending all games.  He spent his entire life loving the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping, and spending time with family and friends doing those activities.  He was a member of the Kansas Fur Harvesters Association, the Fur Takers of America, and the National Trappers Association.

Bob was genuinely kind, caring, and hard-working, and loved spending time talking and telling stories with family and friends.   

He was a life member of St. Augustine/Fidelity Church where he served on various councils and boards.  He is an honorary member for life of the Knights of Columbus. 
 
Survivors include his wife, Ellen, of the home.  Children:  Debbie (Kyle) Deere of Lansing, KS, Jim (DeAnn) Buser, and Steve (Loretta) Buser of Sabetha, KS.  Six grandchildren:  Blake (Kayla) Deere, Riann (Scot) Mullis, Taylar (Bill) Novotny, Kohl Buser, Ashton Buser, Colby Buser.  Four great-grandchildren:  Emersynn, Judah, Frankie, and Ruby.  Siblings:  Eloise (Fred) Hawk, Irene Eisenbise, Gary (Pam) Buser.  Sister-in-law, Anna Mae Buser.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by:  his parents, daughter:  Lisa Kay Buser, brothers:  John Buser and Leo Buser.

Becky Lynn Nelson, age 61 of Verdon, unexpectedly passed away at Community Medical Center in Falls City on Thursday, February 20, 2020.

Survivors include her husband Jerry of Verdon; daughter Shane and husband Joseph Decker of Ripley, OK; granddaughter Josie Decker; brothers Jimmy and Tony Nosler of Arkansas; sister-in-law Norma Stinson of Tecumseh; brother-in-law Dick Wheeler of Hamburg, IA; other relatives and friends.

Charles Lee “Chuck” Brey, 95, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, February 20, 2020 at F.W. Huston Medical Center in Winchester.  He was born January 29, 1925 at McLouth, the son of Jacob “Jake and Zelma Ruth Lowe Brey. He was a 1943 graduate of Ozawkie High School. “Chuck” was a farmer and stockman in the Oskaloosa and Ozawkie area for more than 60 years. He also served as a substitute rural mail carrier for 30 years. He formerly worked for Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka before farming full time. He was a member of Ozawkie United Methodist Church and a long time member of Larner-Segraves American Legion Post #36 in Oskaloosa. He was married to Ruth Ann Edwards on May 2, 1964 at Meriden, she survives at home. He is also survived by one daughter, Lisa Smith, Topeka, one son, Steve (Kim) Brey, Meriden, three brothers, Alfred Brey, Sabetha, Dale Brey, Topeka, Eldon Brey, Topeka, three grandchildren, Kyle (Stephanie) Hackett, Kelsey (Brett) Wagner, Dalton Imhoff-Brey and a great-granddaughter, Huxley Wagner. He was preceded in death by three sisters, his twin, Ceona Michaelson, Loreta Zwygart and Belva M. Fox.

Kathryn “Katie” (Hamilton) Lee, 67, of Bern, Kansas passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the Kansas University Medical Center after losing her second battle with cancer.

Katie was born in Virginia and moved to North Carolina in middle school.  She graduated from NC State majoring in Textile Chemistry.  Katie loved math and science as well as learning anything new. She studied Chinese, learned to shoot a gun, and became a Microsoft Certified Professional, all just for fun.  She traveled and lived all over the country including Montana, California, Nebraska and Kansas.  Because there was no textile industry in Nebraska, she earned her CPA.  She worked as an office manager, accountant, bookkeeper, and in tax preparation.

Katie loved to read and always had a book in her hand. She served on the Bern Community Library’s board and often participated in fundraising events. She always looked forward to serving root beer floats at Bern’s 4th of July celebration.

Katie’s church and faith were very important to her.  She faithfully attended and participated in community service projects. She often was seen participating in first Sunday fellowship and as greeter at the Bern United Methodist Church.

Later in life, Katie married Dallas Lee and together they had a beautiful baby girl, Emily.  She was the joy of their lives! Katie always worked hard to support her in school events and was a spectacular “Dance Mom”. She always made sure Emily had opportunities she wished she had pursued when she was younger.

Growing up, she was also in Girl Scouts and developed a love of camping. Katie, Dallas and the children would travel around in their camper seeing sites and visiting family and friends. She even acquired her own motorbike and enjoyed touring Nebraska and Kansas.

Katie was preceded in death by her father, Jack Hamilton; and her husband, Dallas Lee on March 28, 2018. Katie is survived by her mother, Frances Curtis; her sister, Kristina Hicks; her brother-in-law, Ken; her daughter, Emily and a son-in-law, David Souter. She is also survived by her step-children, Dana, Dustin, and Cami Lee.

Ralph W. Davis, Jr., 74, of Robinson, died Wednesday evening, February 19, 2020, surrounded by family, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital where he had been a patient a few days. He previously had been a resident of Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.

A celebration of Ralph’s is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2020, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Chaplin Tim Champ of Freedom Hospice will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson.

Ralph was born November 6, 1945, at Wichita, the son of Ralph William Sr. and Donna Jean Morriss Davis and had grown up in Wichita where he attended school, before working to complete his GED at Sabetha. He served his country with the U.S. Army for four years, discharged in 1966, at the rank of private first class, serving with the First Missile Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery. Ralph returned home and attended Highland Community College where he studied juvenile delinquency and accident investigation. He worked as a tractor and auto mechanic all of his life, not only on his vehicles, but also for community friends, which allowed him to be very good as an auto parts manager for STR in Hiawatha, which he did for many years, retiring in 2015. Previously he worked for Dean Erdley in Robinson at the Mobil service station for a number of years, before he operated it for several years on his own. Ralph also was a dispatcher/deputy for the Brown County Sherriff Department and served as the Robinson City Marshal.

Ralph was a very active, dedicated community servant: a volunteer firefighter with the Robinson Fire Department, retiring as assistant chief after 38 years of service; served on the Brown County Sheriff Reserves for 15 years where he served as its president. He also coached little league baseball for six years, served on the Robinson Parks & Recreation Committee, active with Cub Scouts, later serving a Scout Master. Ralph attended the Robinson United Methodist Church thru the years. When he made time for hobbies, it included: oil lamps, HO model trains, and working on his cars and truck.

Ralph memories include: the death of my Mother and Grandson broke my heart. Life Goes on. The night I met my beloved wife; the birth of his daughter and son was great days, and vacationing with best friends Steve and Sharilyn Gilbert family.

He married Christina M. Butrick, at the Baptist Church in Hiawatha, May 28, 1968. They moved to Robinson shortly after their first child was born and spent the rest of their life in Robinson. He and Chris were blessed with two children: Dona and Rick. Chris died July 18, 2019. He was also preceded by his parents, step-mother, grandson Nick Ploeger.

Survivors include Dona Enke (Willard) of Robinson, son Rick Davis (Amanda) of New Albany, OH, step brother Paul Macartney of Hiawatha, grandchildren: Matt Ploeger (Nicole) of Atchison, CMCA Hannah Ploeger (Daymond Wallace) of Sicily, Italy, Madeline Davis and Ella Davis of New Albany, OH, 2 great-grandsons: Andrew and Lincoln Ploeger and another on the way, surviving also are other relatives and friends including Sharilyn & Steve Gilbert, Harlan & Susan Kneisel. Mervin R. Geyer, age 90 of rural Humboldt, passed away at his home Thursday, February 20, 2020.

Sister Mary Ethel Burley, OSB, 97, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Friday, February 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Saturday, February 22, at 10:30 a.m.

Sister Mary Ethel was born on August 29, 1922, the oldest of six children of Francis and Cora Marie Walters Burley. She entered the monastery of Mount St. Scholastica in 1942 and lived to celebrate the 75th anniversary of her monastic profession. The education of children was her lifelong passion. Even before coming to religious life, she was a rural school teacher for two years. Receiving her B.S. in education from Mount St. Scholastica College, she was an elementary teacher for 19 years. Later, with her M.S. in education from St. Louis University, she became a principal for another 29 years. Through her nearly 50 years in educational ministry, she served children in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado. In her retirement years, she continued to assist in various domestic services within the monastery.

Sister Mary Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, by her sisters, Maxine Bear and Mary Pedersen, and her brother Arthur Burley. She is survived by her sister Jo Mitchell, her brother Richard (Betty) Burley, nieces and nephews, and her monastic family. Alma J. Holthaus, 98, Kelly, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Life Care Center in Seneca.

Alma was born on August 3, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Mary Stegeman Haverkamp, on the family farm ½ mile west of Kelly. She was the youngest of twelve children. She attended St. Bede’s Catholic School in Kelly, graduating from Kelly High School in 1940.

With her parents being German immigrants, the family spoke German in the home before English. When Alma was five years old, her parents went on a month-long trip to Germany and she was left in the care of her older sister Josepha Steinlage. As a child, Alma remembered praying the rosary in German at church with fellow classmates. She walked to and from school. During her teens and early twenties, time was spent visiting relatives, going to family reunions, wedding dances, making home-made ice cream and butter and attending church activities. Work she did at that time was gardening, housework, making meals and she helped with the canning of the fruits and vegetables and the milking of the cows.

Alma met Fred Holthaus, a World War II veteran at a wedding dance in 1946 at the city hall on Main Street in Seneca. They were married in St. Bede’s Catholic Church on April 15, 1947. She and Fred lived and farmed one and one half miles west of Kelly where they farmed and raised cattle and hogs. Fred died October 22, 1998. Alma’s survivors are her five children: Leonard (Len) and (Debi), Lee’s Summit, MO; Marlene (Dennis) Handke , Topeka; Steve Holthaus, Seneca; Clarence Holthaus, Centralia; Alda (Jeff) LaCrone, Topeka; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Alma was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church and the St. Ann’s Altar Society at Kelly. She enjoyed gardening, canning and baking (especially pies) and making comforters for her children. When she was younger, she ran errands for her husband and sons at planting and harvest time. Fred and Alma traveled to Colorado, St. Louis, Florida, Wisconsin and Hawaii. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 15, 1997. Later Alma enjoyed visiting relatives and others in the nursing homes and e-mailing her family on her computer, not even having taken typing in high school. She enjoyed going to church picnics and was on the prayer chain at church. Alma was a kind and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred; six brothers, George, Lawrence, Frank, Ed, Joe, and Al Haverkamp; five sisters, Anna Boeding, Dora Steinlage, Mary Haug, Josepha Steinlage and Rose Bergman.

Rosaries will be prayed 2 and 7 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2020 at the Lauer Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly.

Eric was born January 17, 1977, in Atchison, KS, the son of Raymond and Julie (Trower) Elias.  He graduated from Atchison High School in 1996.  Eric was employed by the Achievement services.  He was a member of the Atchison Train Club and participated in the Special Olympics.  Eric enjoyed baseball, bowling, fishing, riding tractors, music especially Lakefest.  He loved volunteering and people.

Survivors include his mother, Julie Elias, Atchison, KS, a brother Jerad Elias and Kathy Harris, Atchison, KS, a sister Monica and Michael Linck, Atchison, KS, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his father, paternal grandparents Alfred and Rosemary Elias, maternal grandparents, John and Bonnie Trower.

Kyler Michael Postma, 16, of Ozawkie, KS, formerly of Effingham, KS, died on Sunday, February 16, 2020.  

He was born August 19, 2003 in Horton, KS.  

Kyler attended Jefferson West Schools the last four years and prior to that in Atchison County Community Schools.

He is survived by his mother, Kelli Parkey of Effingham; his father, Michael and Tamara Postma of Ozawkie, KS; a brother, Andrew (Jessica) Crump of Cutler Bay, FL and five sisters, April (Bill) Dillow of Liberty, MO.; Allison (Walker) Servaes of Overland Park, KS; Katherine Postma of Ozawkie, KS; Graci Postma and Emili Postma of Effingham, KS; grandparents Eileen Carroll, Bill and Ginger Postma and James and Carolee Prickett.; nieces, Isabel Leonard, and Penelope Crump; and nephew, Caden Leonard.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother Lucille Postma, a brother, Drake Banks and a niece, Mia Crump.

Elena Poe Dodge, 65, of Jacksonville, Florida, died on Sunday, February 2nd, 2020 at the Santa Cecilia Medical Center, Iba, Republic of the Philippines.  

She was born March 28th, 1954 in Quezon City Philippines to Arsenio and Alejandra Pagaduan.  

She married Allen E. Dodge on December 5th, 2003. Elena is survived by her husband, Allen Dodge and daughter, Allyson Poe of Jacksonville, Florida; mother, Alejandra Cruz Pagaduan of San Juan, Zambales, Philippines; stepchildren, Ben Dodge and Chrystal Caylor of Horton, Kansas; sister, Marita C. Bell of Chula Vista, California; brothers, Antonio Pagaduan of San Juan, Zambales, Philippines; Rolando Pagaduan of Elk Grove, California; nieces, Carren Bell-Recasas of Chula Vista, California; Kristel Pagaduan of Elk Grove, California; nephews, Joseph Bell of Chula Vista, California; RJ Pagaduan of Elk Grove, California.  Elena also had multiple cousins.

Elena was preceded in death by her father, Arsenio, brother, Juan, and sister, Estella.

Elena was a longtime resident of the United States, arriving in 1977 where she lived and traveled throughout the country.  She was a recognized expert on U.S. Navy Uniform Regulations and Insignia, working for many years as a Naval Uniform Specialist for the Navy Exchange. Elena’s love for cooking and business management provided her with the opportunity to purchase her Filipino food and merchandise store in Corpus Christi, Texas.  This highly successful venture opened in 1991 and operated for over 17 years.  She also loved investing, bingo, casinos, foreign and domestic travels, her daughter, family and friends.  Her greatest travel adventures were with her husband, Allen, and daughter, Allyson, while living abroad in Yokohama Japan.

Visitation is from 4:00-6:00 PM on Sunday, February 23rd, 2020, at the Dishon Maple- Chaney Funeral Home in Horton, Kansas. Raymond Eugene Riley, 87, of Winchester, passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

Raymond was born July 21, 1932 at Atchison, the son of Paul Harlan and Hazel C. Nettleton  Riley. He was a 1950 graduate of Winchester High School. He worked at Guaranty State (Merchants) Bank and the Kansas Chamber of Commerce both in Topeka, retiring in 1994 after 34 years of service at age 62.  Raymond served as Director and Librarian of the Winchester Public Library and was instrumental in writing and receiving a grant and securing a donor for building of a new Library for Winchester.  Raymond continued to work and volunteer at the Library for 23 years after his retirement.  He was an active member of the Winchester United Methodist Church, serving as the church organist for 67 years. Having a passion for Genealogy,  Raymond served as organizing President of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society and was a member and officer of the Jefferson County Historical Society. He served more than 10 years as a volunteer for the Find A Grave organization throughout Northeast Kansas.  He organized Boy Scout Troop 192 in Winchester and served as troop leader 10 years. Raymond served on the Winchester Elementary School Board and then as a School  Board member during organizing and consolidation of Jefferson County North Schools.  Raymond was a devoted supporter of all Jefferson County North activities as well as many neighboring communities. He served as the official statistician for Winchester and Jefferson County North Schools sports teams, only missing 15 games in 69 years.  He was honored with naming of the JCN  football field as “Riley Field”. Raymond and his wife, Marie, received the JCN Spirit award in 2016 and he received the 2015 Basketball Coaches Association Service Award.  He was an avid fan of baseball, and attended many professional games. At various stadiums, including the Kansas City Royals, St. Louis, New York and Chicago. He loved watching college Basketball, especially  KU and professional football and the Kansas City Chiefs!

Raymond was most proud of his family. He married  E. “Marie” Riley on June 14, 1952 at Winchester, she preceded him in death on March 18, 2018.  He is survived by, one son, “Tom” (Lisa) Riley, Emporia, three daughters, Beverly  “Bev” (Tom) Schuler, Meriden, Mary Ann (Greg) Noll, Winchester, Debra  (Dave) Schuler, Winchester, one brother, Glen Riley, Meriden, 11 grandchildren, Erin (Jeff) Rodriguez, Derek Riley, Scott Schuler, Kevin (Susan) Schuler, Janelle (Chris) Harper, Alisha (Roger) Elliott, Eric (Danielle)Noll, Zach (Kacie) Noll, Kristin (Bobby) Kramer, Kimberly (Brian) Lackey, Kelsey (Phillip) Strozier, and 21 great-grandchildren, Amiya, Brylie, Laykin, Lucy, Kenley, Curry, Bristol, Reese, Jackson, Wyatt, Alexa, Paxton, Ridge, Zoey, Koah, Berkeley, Emersyn, Cruz, Canon, Anna and Palmer.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Lynn Riley, a son, Paul E. Riley, two brothers, Charles Riley and infant Baby Boy Riley.

Rose Catherine Kramer, 97, of Seneca, Kansas, passed away peacefully February 15, 2020 at Life Care in Seneca, Kansas, surrounded by her family.

Rose was born on March 28, 1922 west of Seneca on the farm to Henry and Mary (Tangeman) Wietharn. She attended Sts. Peter & Paul School, graduated from the 8th Grade in May of 1936 and graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in 1940. She received recognition for 96% accuracy in typing 75 words per minute.

On January 17, 1945 she married Lawrence Kramer at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. To this union they added five sons and four daughters. They lived on a farm southeast of Baileyville until 1983 when they moved to Seneca. She was employed part time at the Prairie Lounge in Seneca until its closing. She then worked at the Nemaha County Nutrition Center for 12 ½ years, retiring in 1998. and volunteered at the Mission Center. She also cleaned the parish house in Seneca. She was a wonderful homemaker and was known for her homemade potato donuts and pies. Her greatest love was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the love of her life. She loved quilting, crocheting, playing cards and bingo.

She was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Sodality. She was a current member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and Sts. Peter & Paul Altar Sodality.

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry in March 1958; her mother, Mary in May 1977; her husband Lawrence, on August 8, 1996; children, Rita Marie on May 29, 1953, Richard on October 16, 1963 and Emmett on April 26, 2017; a grandson, Joseph Kramer May 1984; and siblings, Vincent Wietharn in April 1989, Ethel Rottinghaus on March 11, 2010, Leona Lueger on January 25, 2011 and by an infant brother and sister.

She is survived by three sons and three daughters, Jeanette (David) Althouse of Saronville, Nebraska, Ken (Pam) Kramer of Corning, Mary Ann Kramer of Topeka, Elsie (Tom) Eisenbarth of Topeka, Marvin (Sharon) Kramer of Marysville, Kansas and Clete (Jeanie) Kramer of Seneca; 17 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Linda Louise (Hartter) McGuire, 67, of Sabetha, Kansas was welcomed in to Jesus’ arms on Sunday, February 16, 2020 surrounded by family.

Linda was born on October 17, 1952 to Harold and Loretta (Schmitt) Hartter in Sabetha, KS. She graduated from Sabetha High School in 1970 and went on to attend the University of Hair Design in Topeka. She then returned to Sabetha and worked at Char Mae for Alta Mae Hopp and Charlotte Hartter until purchasing the business in 1974. Linda owned the business until 2019 when she sold it to Jessica Lay.

Linda married Ronald Priest on May 28, 1972, until he passed away on April 13, 1981.

Linda married Scott McGuire on November 25, 2006 or the Saturday after Thanksgiving (according to Scott) at The Delaware Baptist Church in Fairview and road away in a huge motorcycle procession.

Linda attended the Delaware Baptist Church where she was a life-long member. When Linda wasn’t attending Sabetha or K-State sporting events, you would find her in her kitchen baking Christmas candies, cookies, pie bars, or throwing anything into a random dish and still making it taste good. She loved tending to her garden, riding on the back of Scott’s Harley’s on cross country trips, and girl nights with her good friends. Most July’s, November’s, and December’s were spent watching every Hallmark movie on repeat. Linda served on many different boards in the Sabetha community and was always willing to extend a helping hand.

Linda was preceded in death by her father, Harold Hartter; her late husband, Ronald Priest; and her brother-in-law’s, Doug McGuire and Roger Brockhoff.

Linda is survived by her husband, Scott McGuire of the home; her daughters, Brooke (Jason) Osterhaus of Topeka, Alissa Steinlage of Wamego, and Kirsten Steinlage of Sabetha; her three grandchildren, Aynslee, Liam, and Elijah Osterhaus all of Topeka; her mother, Loretta Hartter of Sabetha, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Rudy and Linda Lehman, her father-in-law, Jim McGuire; her sisters, Denise (Randy) Hall, Sue Brockhoff, and Lori Hoppe all of Sabetha; her brother, Dennis (Jackie) Hartter of Hiawatha; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Amy (Matt) Lowdermilk of Fairview; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.

Alan J. McQueen, 65 of Falls City, NE, passed away on February 17, 2020, at Madonna Rehabilitation in Lincoln, NE. He was born November 27, 1954 at Sabetha, Ks to the late Robert R. and Joyce E. McQueen.

Alan graduated from Sabetha High School in 1972, He married Carol Nickelson, they had two children and were later divorced.  Alan enlisted in the Air Force 7-18-1973 and was discharged 7-24-1981. While in the Air Force he earned Good Conduct Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Commendation Medal, NCO Professional Education Ribbon, Longevity Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and National Defense Service Medal. He was an Electronic Mechanical Communications and Cryptographic Equipment Technician. He was discharged as a Staff Sargent. After leaving the Air Force he worked in Lincoln and later moved to Falls City and worked part time at the Falls City Nursing Home. He retired due to health and remained in Falls City until his death.

He was member of Sts. Peter and Paul Parrish in Falls City, a member of Knights of Columbus #1336, and   was a ham radio operator and belonged to the radio club in Hiawatha, KS.

Alan is survived by a daughter Heather McQueen of Chicago, IL, and a son Robert and wife Olivia of New York and their children, daughter Lilly and son Oliver. He is also survived by a sister Nancy Kommer and husband Peter of LaVista, NE, brothers, Barry and wife Rita of Lawrence, KS, Jay and wife Martha of Dodge City, KS, and Jon and his wife Teresa of Falls City, NE, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and nephews Steven Kommer and Travis McQueen.

A funeral mass will be held on February 22, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Rulo, NE. with Father David Oldham as the presiding priest. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery, Rulo NE. Military graveside services by the Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

John W. Stratton, 87, of Omaha, NE, passed away February 17th, 2020, in Omaha.  He was born December 13, 1932 in San Jose, CA to John and Fern (Stratton) Jepson.  John grew up in the San Francisco Bay area where he began his baseball career.  As a teenager, he played in the 1950 Hearst Sandlot Classic in New York City and met Joe Di Maggio.  His baseball career in the minor leagues took him to Ventura, CA; Eau Claire, WI; Evansville, IN; Jacksonville, FL and Cedar Rapids, IA. After retiring from baseball, John had a lifelong career with the JCPenney company, which eventually brought him to Falls City as the store’s manager.  He shared his love of baseball as a youth coach there, leading the Falls City Elks Midget baseball team in the state tournament.  John’s passion for fishing took him to Wisconsin, Utah, Alaska, Canada, Belize and Christmas Island, to name a few.

On September 22, 1956, John married Janet Helene Caton in Eau Claire, WI. John is survived by his children Kathy and her husband Ken Kottich of Lincoln, NE; Bob and wife Ann (Frederick) Stratton of Omaha, NE; Joyce and husband Pat Lang, Salt Lake City, UT and Jayne Stratton, Lincoln, NE, special friend, Elaine Hansen of Omaha. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ryan and Toyin Kottich (Lincoln), Jon Kottich and Nicole Chmelka (Lincoln), Adam Kottich (Lincoln), Rachel and John Lee (Omaha), Zach Stratton (Springfield, MO) and great grandchildren Jackson and Olivia Lee (Omaha).   He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, wife and son John. 

In 1949, the “scrappy shortstop” from San Jose, CA, played in the American Legion “Little League World Series” at Omaha’s Municipal Stadium (Rosenblatt Stadium) as a member of the Bill Irwin Post (Oakland, CA) Little League Team.  He was the shortstop in a triple play that helped secure victory in the title game.  It seems fitting that his life led him back to Omaha where he eventually crossed home plate, for the last time. Of all the wonderful experiences John had during his lifetime, his family was always first. As he told his grandkids after their games: “Number (jersey number) on your scorecard, number one in my heart.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Interment will be in Falls City Catholic Cemetery.

Shirley Marlene Jones, 88, of St. Joseph, MO formerly of DeKalb, MO died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020 at the Corby Place, St. Joseph, MO.

Shirley M. Bryan was born on Sept. 30, 1931 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Virgil and Charlotte (Thompson) Bryan. She was a farm wife and homemaker for most of her life. Shirley was a member of the Sugar Creek Christian Church, and enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, and especially spoiling her grandchildren.

She was married to Lloyd “Dobber” Jones on Nov. 9, 1949 in Atchison KS. He preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 2003. Survivors include three sons Dean (Linda) Jones, Smithville, MO, Bryan (Dorothy) Jones, and Tony (Dawn) Jones, both of Rushville, MO, four daughters, Kathy (Roger) Lewis, Topeka, KS, Kris Duty, Blue Springs, MO, Deirdre (Teddy) Anderson, Atchison KS, and Laurie (David) Donaldson, St. Joseph, MO, a half sister, Linda (Jim) Miller, Atchison, KS, sixteen grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren. Her parents, husband Lloyd, a son, Larry Jones, a brother William Goodwin, a sister Janice Smith, 1 granddaughter and three great grandchildren preceded her in death.

Robert Edgar Kuhl was born on September 26, 1935 to Edgar and Elizabeth (Meints) Kuhl at his parents home near Elk Creek Nebraska.  He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, Nebraska on June 5, 1949 with Pastor Joseph Gerken.  Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  Family came right after his religious faith.  Bob was always one to help anyone down on their luck.  He was always one that anyone could call on and knew that he would be able to help. 

Bob started working for Chuck Morrissey when he was 14 years old and he always said that was his favorite job.  In 1955, he married Margaret Shew of Crab Orchard and they lived in Beatrice where he worked for Dempsters.  After returning to the farm where he had grown up, Bob joined the National Guard and started a family.  He and Margaret raised three sons, Larry, Gary and Terry-they were Bob's greatest joy.  Raising the boys involved a lot of sports.  Bob loved being a coach, referee, and an announcer at the American Legion games.  He and Margaret always traveled to the away games and were well known for having extra kids tag along.  

In 1980, Bob and Margaret started Kuhl Trenching and Excavating and in 1994 they built The Cream Station (which is now Fraziers Cafe.)  Both were family endeavors with everyone pitching in.  By now, Bob was so very proud of the three daughters-in-law that had come along and he always doted on them.  Margaret passed away in 1996 and he gives credit to his daughters-in-law, and grandkids for getting him through the years of her illness.   In 1997, Bob married Amy Childress and she came with two daughters that Bob quickly loved and adored.  

Bob loved traveling all of his life.  He attended a lot of Husker athletic events and his pride and joy was watching all of his grandchildren participate in sports.  He was famous for always having a grandkid with him no matter where he went.

He passed away at his home in Tecumseh, Nebraska on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the age of 84 years.   

Robert will be lovingly remembered by his wife Amy, sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kelly Kuhl of Tecumseh, Gary and Jane Kuhl of Elk Creek and Terry and Lisa Kuhl of Tecumseh, step-daughters and husbands, Holly and Dan Denton of Gretna and Courtney and Rick Whittet of Berthoud, CO, grandchildren, Molly and Matt Schaardt, Taylor and Sara Kuhl, Alex and Holly Kuhl, Katie and Mike Atkins, Anna Kuhl and fiancee' Robert Jones, Derek and Jamie Kuhl, Nathan Kuhl, Garett and Gavin Denton and Evelyn and William Whittet, great-grandchildren, Cooper and Blakely Kuhl and Bruin Schaardt.  He also leaves behind several loving cousins, and other family members as well as a host of dear friends. 

He was preceded in death by his late wife, Margaret, parents, Edgar and Elizabeth Kuhl, brother, Vernon Kuhl, sisters, Marlene Havekost and Wilma Antholz and grandson Aaron Kuhl.  

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, Nebraska with Rev. Marcel Kohlmeyer officiating.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska, with family greeting from friends from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials may go to the St. John’s Lutheran Church or Beatrice Asera Care Hospice.

Interment will be in the Tecumseh Cemetery, Tecumseh, Nebraska with full military honors with the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team and the Tecumseh American Legion and VFW Post.

Bill was born December 20, 1930 in Atchison, KS, the son of Oscar and Louise (Arensberg) Giles.  He attended Atchison High School and then entered the United States Navy, serving from 1948 to 1953.  Bill worked as a mechanic at KC Flying Service, the Atchison Fire Department for three years and Atchison Police Department for seventeen years and Carrigan Lumber for twenty five years.  Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and then St. Joseph Catholic Church, Nortonville, KS.  He was a member of the VFW, American Legion.  Bill like to travel, play cards, working outdoors, wood working and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bill married Charlotte C. Hegarty on September 7, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Atchison, KS.  She also passed unexpectedly on Friday, February 14, 2020 due to the accident.  They had been married for sixty-six years.  Survivors include a son David Giles, Cummings, KS, three daughters, Eileen (Eddie) Frad, Atchison, KS, Mary Jeanne Bond (Darryl Kuntz), Lancaster, KS, Barbara Baker, Atchison, KS a brother Gerald (Patty) Giles, Atchison, KS, eleven grandchildren, three step grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, twelve step great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

C.C. was born July 24, 1931 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Ernest and Charlotte (Graves) Hegarty.  She attended Mount Saint Scholastic Academy graduating in 1949.  C.C. worked at Dairy Queen, KPL, Snowden-Mize Drug, Montgomery Ward, The Book Station, Elegance Revisited, Snow Creek, Doodlebugs Book Store and Sacred Heart Thrift Store.  She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and then St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Nortonville, KS.  C.C. served as an officer for the Sacred Heart Altar Society, Parish Council and PTA.  She enjoyed playing cards and traveling.

C.C. married William “Bill” A. John Richard “Dick” Loch, 94, of Lawrence KS, formerly of Atchison KS passed away on Friday, Feb. 14th, 2020 at his home at Pioneer Ridge, in Lawrence KS with his family by his side.

Memorial services will be 7:00 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 18th, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Craig Lantz officiating. The body has been cremated and a private family interment will be at a later date at the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. Dick was born on Jan 27th, 1926 in Lane Kansas, the son of Richard C. and Mary E. (King) Loch. He spent his early years in Lane helping in his parents Produce House and his Grandfather’s Drug Store. The family moved to Atchison, Kansas where Dick attended and graduated from Atchison High School in 1943. Following graduation Dick enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, to join the WWII effort. At the end of the war he returned to Atchison. Dick was married to Ardena Saggs on March 19, 1950. He began his more than 50 year career in the insurance industry. After building and selling his own agency, Dick officially retired at the age of 84. Dick and Ardena lived the majority of their lives in Atchison, until moving to Lawrence Kansas in 2017.

Dick enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing. He was an active member in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, a member of the Atchison Area Economic Development Corp, the Atchison Rotary Club, the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion Post # 6 and many other organizations in Atchison.

He is survived by his wife Ardena of the home, son David and wife Angela (Ellison) Loch, Lawrence KS, granddaughter Alyce(Adam) Dressman, two great grandsons Myles and Nolan Dressman, Frankfort, KS and grandson John Loch, Lenexa, KS. His parents, a son Rick Loch, (1991) and a brother Robert C. Loch (1996) preceded him in death.

Janice Moore, 87, of Falls City, NE, passed away February 14, 2020 at Falls City. She was born February 18, 1932 near Watson, MO to Walter and Glennie (Moger) Whetsel.

She married Robert L. Moore on August 28, 1955 at First Christian Church, Falls City. He passed away October 13, 1996. To this union three children were born, Steven, Douglas and Cheryl.

Janice attended Star School grades 1-8 North of Craig, Missouri @ High Point School. She was baptized at Big Lake, Missouri in Big Lake.         She graduated from Craig High School, Craig, Missouri in 1949, moving to Falls City, Nebraska in 1951 and began work at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Hospital. She took L.P.N. training, taught by Maxine Kielsmirer and passed her state boards in 1956. She worked at the hospital for 54 years before retiring at the age of 70 and 1/2 years in 2002. She was a charter member of the Nazarene Church at Craig, MO and attended the First Christian Church in Falls City.

Janice is survived by her sons, Steven and his wife Jodi of St. Joseph, MO, Douglas of Wisconsin, sisters-in-law, JoEtta Shaw and Pat Moore, brother-in-law, Meryl Wenger, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Cheryl at age 5 in 1967, brother, Donald Whetsel and wife Verlene and two sisters Mary Snider Whetsel and husband James and Cleo Monroe Whetsel and husband Les, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Catherine and Raymond Moore, brothers-in law, Donald Shaw and Corky Moore, and sister-in-law Retta Wenger.          

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at 10:30 AM at First Christian Church with Reverend Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

Viewing and open visitation will begin Monday afternoon at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

David J. Paul

1966 – 2020

David Joseph Paul, age 53, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly February 14, 2020, at his home. A service celebrating David’s Life will be at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  David will be cremated following the service and burial will be at a later date in Sunset Memory Garden with his wife Debbie. David was born August 2, 1966, the son of Richard and Virginia Paul. He graduated from Atchison High School and attended NEK Vocational School. He and Cheryl Vandiver were married shortly after graduation and later divorced. David married Deborah “Debbie” Blasi August 1, 2014. Debbie preceded him in death on May 1, 2019. David was a longtime employee at Bradken as an arc air welder and blast operator. In his spare time he enjoyed many things including motorcycling, working on cars-especially his ’69 Camero, barbecuing, antiques, the Kansas City Chiefs, KU Jayhawks, his cats that he and Debbie took in and spending time with family and friends. He was currently in the process of remodeling his house. 

Survivors include his two sons, Matthew J. (Autumn) Paul, Alexander J. Paul; one grandson, Keaton J. Paul; his mother, Virginia L. Paul; brother, Danny W. (Deanna) Paul; father-in-law, Ken Blasi; brother-in-law, David Blasi; sisters-in-law, Denise B. Becerra, Dana B. Weaver; uncle, Jerome Paul; nieces , nephews and a special friend, Ted Ackman.He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Paul. David was a fun, loving and caring person to all who knew him or whom he met and will be sadly missed by many. 

Naida “June” Jepson, 92, of Soldier, KS, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 at her home with family by her side. She was born May 8, 1927 in Circleville, KS, the daughter of Floyd Walter and Ella Marie (Stephenson) Slimmer.

June graduated from Circleville High School in 1946. She began working for Soldier High School as a cook for 7 years and later she worked for Denison State Bank in Holton for 32 years.

She was a member of Soldier Christian Church, Jackson County Historical Society, Holton Hospital Auxiliary, Soldier Senior Citizens Center, Ladies Coffee Club and Soldier Ladies Card Club.

June married Marion “Dale” Jepson on September 29, 1946 in Holton, KS; he preceded her in death on January 18, 1994. She married Charles J. “Chuck” Werns, Sr. on October 13, 2001 in Mission, KS; he preceded her in death on December 15, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Smith on October 20, 2009 and a sister, Wanola Buss on June 29, 2019.

Survivors include 2 sons, Daryl Jepson (Joy) of Topeka, KS and Kent Jepson (Jayne) of Soldier, KS; a son-in-law, Ron Smith of Topeka, KS; 2 step-daughters, Mary Keirsey (Jim) of Gilbert, AZ and Nancy Miller (Dan) of Anchorage, AK; a step-son, Charles Werns, Jr. (Charla) of Stoughton, WI; 2 brothers, Bill Slimmer (Shirley) of Topeka, KS and Gary Slimmer (Barbara) of Topeka, KS; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Stephen Wayne Tims, 63, of Circleville, KS, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at K.U. Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. He was born March 14, 1956 in Ft. Benning, GA, the son of Herman and Marjorie Viola (Edman) Tims.

Stephen graduated from Centralia High School. He proudly served in the United State Navy during the Vietnam War; during his time in the Navy, he earned his Associates Degree. Stephen retired from the United States Navy in 1996. He also worked for many years as a Sargent for the Jackson County Jail.

Stephen married Brenda Kay Bottom on June 28, 1980 in Circleville, KS. They celebrated over 39 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Tims of the home; a daughter, Dawn Tims of Lincoln, NE; 3 sons, Daniel Tims (fiancé, Megan) of Topeka, KS, Nathan Tims of Circleville, KS and David Tims (Mona) of Soldier, KS; a sister, Janet Scott (John) of Centralia, KS; 2 brothers, Tommy Tims (Dale) of Bogalusa, LA and LeRoy Tims of Seneca, KS and 8 grandchildren, Devin, Sophie, Elora, Alaina, Triniti, Brennan, Rubie and Emilee.

Adrian H. Rottinghaus, 91, of Baileyville, Kansas died on February 12, 2020 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Adrian was born March 4,1928 at his parent’s rural home northwest of St. Benedict, Kansas, the oldest child of Tony and Nora (Olberding) Rottinghaus.  He walked a mile to the one-room county school he attended through 8th grade, then attended and graduated in 1945 from St. Mary’s High School, St. Benedict, Kansas.

He farmed and managed livestock with his father and brothers for many years as well as doing custom combining and baling.  As a young man he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping animals for their pelts, bowling, and playing as well as watching talented brothers and cousins play sports.  He was drafted into the military in 1955 and after basic training at Fort Riley was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.   He was assigned to go overseas but the Korean War ended before he deployed.  During his military time he was a mechanic working in the motor pool.

On June 7, 1960 he married Mary Ann Stallbaumer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Benedict, Kansas.  After their marriage they made their home north of Baileyville on a farm previously owned by his grandparents and parents. Adrian continued to farm, had a cattle and hog operation and continued to do custom harvesting and repaired most of his machinery himself.   Their four children helped with the family operation until they completed college.   In 1996, Adrian and Mary Ann moved to Baileyville, and his son and family moved to the family farm. Adrian continued to farm with his son until he was 87 years old, when a severe stroke left him unable to be active in the farm operation. His love of farming never faded … and he continued to watch and talk about the land, the crops and the machinery as often as possible.

Adrian was a past member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, served on the parish council and as a lay minister until moving to Baileyville in 1996. He was currently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville, where he was an active member until his stroke.

Adrian had a great love for the land and weather, enjoyed farming and working with livestock.  He spent a lot of time woodworking —making furniture and home updates and repairs, working on machinery large or small, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He liked traveling through the United States and once in a memorable trip to England. His collections of marbles, bullet pencils and knives were also a great pastime as he got older. He coached summer baseball for many years while his children were playing and especially enjoyed watching his children, and later grandchildren, play sports and participate in other school and summer activities.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony (Tony) and Honora (Nora); and a sister, Joyce Anderson.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann; children , Alan (Brenda Fagan)Rottinghaus of Chicago  Brenda (Steve ) Smyth of Lenexa,  Tim (Jane Mathewson) Rottinghaus of Baileyville, Dan (Emilie Quaison) Rottinghaus of Parkville, Missouri; and ten grandchildren, Patty Rottinghaus, Chris (Sarah Macke) Rottinghaus, Lauren Rottinghaus, Nicole Beal,  Connor Rottinghaus, Dustin Rottinghaus, Collin Rottinghaus, Carson Rottinghaus, Sophie  Smyth and Ainsley Smyth; and siblings, Marie Eagan of Axtell,  Cletus Rottinghaus of Seneca, Lyle Rottinghaus of  Seneca, Jerry Rottinghaus of Bern, Emmett Rottinghaus of Westmoreland, Galen Rottinghaus of Seneca, Eldon Rottinghaus of Ozawkie, Ivan Rottinghaus of Seneca and  Edna Urquhart of Silver Lake.

Mary (Meyer) Montgomery, 94, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the Apostolic Christian Home.

Mary was born on May 12, 1925 to Carl and Minnie (Kroemer) Meyer in Preston, Nebraska. She graduated from Sabetha High School in 1944.

Mary married Ivan Montgomery on August 8, 1948. They celebrated their golden anniversary in 1998. The couple lived south of Oneida on a farm for two years and then moved south of Bern and farmed for 48 years. They retired and moved to Sabetha in February of 2000.

Mary was a nurse at Dr. Nichols Sanitarium in Savannah, Missouri, working with cancer patients before she and Ivan were married. Once married, Mary helped on the farm, raised registered dogs and later worked at the Bern Meat Locker.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Minnie Meyer; her husband, Ivan in 2000; two brothers, Walter Meyer in 1936, and Fred Meyer in 1974; and a grandchild, Emily Montgomery in 1986.

Mary is survived by her children, Paul (Bernice) Montgomery of Topeka, Kansas, and Marie (Denny) Haywood of Helena, Montana; her brother, Carl Meyer of Woodlawn, Kansas; her grandchildren, Kevin (Samantha) Montgomery of Olathe, Kansas, Kyle (Marissa) Montgomery of Durango, Colorado, and four grandchildren, Logan, Nolan, and Haley all of Olathe, Kansas, and Vaughn of Durango, Colorado.

Melvin H. “Chuck” Oxley, 64, Atchison, Kansas died Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at the Atchison Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral with Fr. Chuck was born March 4, 1955 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Charles William and Bonnie Lou Halstead Oxley. He attended Martin West Elementary School and graduated from Atchison High School in 1973.

He and Marilyn E. Cline were united in marriage on August 15, 1983 in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Chuck began his employment with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, then Union Pacific Railroad.  He then became employed with Stan Boos Ford in Atchison and later with Rusty Eck Ford in Leavenworth, Kansas. For the past 18 years he was employed with Atchison Auto Parts.

Chuck was a member of the Roman Catholic Faith. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, family members and he enjoyed going to work.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn, Atchison, KS, a daughter Morgan (Adam) Werner, Savannah, MO, a son Joshua Oxley, Atchison, KS, a brother, Ferol (Romanna) Oxley, Horton, KS, three grandchildren, Cedra Oxley; Harper Werner; Cooper Werner and a step grandchild, Frank Kinney and a great niece Zahley.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Verna Jewell Goodman, of Hiawatha, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 6th, 2020, a day after her 89th birthday.

Verna was born to the late Zena Sutherland and Harold Smith of Wetmore, the youngest of four children. Her brothers, Keith and Vincent, and sister LaVerne precede her in death and were waiting for her arrival in glory to the pearly gates.

Verna met and married the late Charles Marion Adams, in 1954, in Junction City, Kansas and together welcomed three children: John Adams (Melanie) of Stover, MO, Kristy Doyle (Thomas) of Hiawatha, James Adams (Tamara), also of Hiawatha. Charles died in 1964.

Verna had several different occupations during her life, including a keypad data operator, a receptionist at KU Medical Center, and delivering the St. Joseph, MO newspaper for 25 years of which she was very proud.

In 1991, Verna reconnected with the late Merlin Goodman of Wetmore, KS, and they married the following year. She considered his children: Liz Babb (Dan), Donna Halstead (Daniel), along with their grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as her own. They spent their life together going to church, working hard, and spending time with their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Merlin died in 2018. Merlin’s children that precede her in death are Randy, Tracy Glenn, and Richard (Dickie) Goodman.

Verna loved Jesus, reading her Bible, praying for and with others, laughing, singing, and always had a smile on her face. She was a loving and caring person, always putting others before herself, and was truly an example of the love of Jesus. “To know her was to love her.”

Verna leaves to cherish her beloved memory, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of Verna’s life is planned for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2020, at the Calvary Temple Assembly of God of Hiawatha, with Pastor Jim Farris officiating. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date at the Wetmore Cemetery.

The family will meet friends one hour prior to services at Church.

Reva Carolyn Korte, 85, of Holton, passed away Monday, February 10, 2020 at Medicalodges Jackson County in Holton with family by her side.

She was born October 1, 1934 at Baileyville, Kansas, the daughter of Anton and Margaret Broxterman Nolte.  She graduated from Kelly High School in 1952.

Reva was a homemaker.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, helping her husband with woodworking projects, gardening and crafting.

She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton and the Altar Society at the church.

Reva married Marion Francis Korte on June 30, 1955 at Kelly, Kansas.  They celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.  He survives, of the home.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Anthony Korte, who died in infancy, three sisters, Fran McAsey, Berniece Wilhelm and Marjorie Steinlage, and two brothers, Clete Nolte and Kenny Nolte.

John Banks, age 74 of Stella, passed away Friday, February 7, 2020 at Colonial Acres in Humboldt, Nebraska.

Survivors include his brother Stephen of Plano, TX; sisters and brothers-in-law Catherine and Jim Donahoe of Stella; Christina and Jerry Joy of Stella; nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and -nieces; and many friends.

A graveside memorial and committal service will be Saturday, February 22, 11:00 a.m. at the Stella Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #222 of Shubert and the U.S. Air Force Honors Detail.

Kurtis M. Niehues, 22, of Centralia, died Sunday morning, February 9, 2020, in a single car accident north of Corning on US Highway 63.

Kurtis was born on October 16, 1997.  He was brought home by his parents, Frank and Janell Niehues on October 17, 1997. He grew up in the Kelly community, attended school in Seneca and graduated from Nemaha Central High School in 2016. During his high school career, he was active in sports; and was selected for the 2016 State All Star Baseball Team.  Kurtis excelled as a lineman in football; but his greatest memory was when he recovered a fumble and scored a defensive touchdown. At the end of the 2015 football season, Kurtis was awarded the David Lackey Most Inspirational Player Award by Coach Seitz. His proudest moment was being a member of Nemaha Central 3A Baseball State Championship Team.

Although only 22 at the time of his death, Kurtis affected many people in his lifetime, especially with his contagious smile. He had a large circle of friends; he never knew a stranger, as everyone he met became a friend. Kurtis enjoyed gatherings with his family and friends.  Those who knew Kurtis, even just a little, lost a shining light in their lives. Kurtis found a way to touch everyone’s heart.

Kurtis enjoyed farming & raising cattle; he loved the outdoors, hunting & fishing.  Kurtis and his cousin Taylor shared a special bond; they were more like brothers than cousins. They worked side by side at Niehues Trenching. At the time of his death, Kurtis owned his own rock hauling business.

Kurtis was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly and the Knights of Columbus Council #14639.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe Gudenkauf on December 4, 1989, Rose Gudenkauf on November 9, 1993, Herbert Niehues on June 26, 2000 and Regina “Jean” Niehues on December 31, 2011.

Kurtis will be missed everyday by his parents, Frank and Janell Niehues of Corning, his sister Katie Niehues of Manhattan, his loving Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and many, many great friends.

 Joyce Dalene (Logsdon) Brown, 74, Valley Falls, passed away Monday, February 10, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loved ones after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was born September 14, 1945, at Holton, the daughter of Dale and Ruth (Sutton) Logsdon. She was a 1963 graduate of Valley Falls High School.
    Joyce went to work for the Department of the Army at Ft. Leavenworth right out of high school. She ended her federal government career after 42 years of service, retiring from the United States Postal Service in 2005. After retirement she worked part-time at the Valley Falls Vindicator and TJ Maxx in Topeka.
    She was a former member of American Postal Workers Union Local 270 in Topeka and a current member of the Jefferson County National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 2243. She co-founded the Valley Falls Food Pantry. She was a member of the Valley Falls Economic Development Committee and currently held a position on the Jefferson County Service Organization board. Joyce was involved in local politics and participated in many city council meetings over the years.
    Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Jerry Logsdon, and her ex-husband, Frankie T. Brown, Sr.
    She is survived by her family who were the light of her life. They included her children, Frankie T. “Tom” Brown, Jr. and Jeff (Beth) Brown, all of Valley Falls, and Tracy (Terry Marcotte) Brown, Manhattan; a sister Dianne (Paul) Heinen, Valley Falls; nine grandchildren, Alan (Chelsey) Brown, Shelli (Chase) Lederer, Lauren and Lily Brown, Keith (Corey) Spaulding, Stephen Lane, Brenna Lane, Franki (Brock) Watson, Emily Lane; and four great-grandchildren, Elisabeth Brown, Lily and Luke Lane, and Lane Watson. Her greatest joy was watching her grandchildren in all of their school activities. She was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching the KSU Wildcats, KC Chiefs, and the KC Royals.
    As per Joyce’s request, she will be cremated.  In Joyce’s honor, her family will hold a remembrance of her life for extended family and friends from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2020, at the Kendall State Bank Community Hall, 408 Broadway, Valley Falls. Her family is requesting those attending to please wear sports affiliated shirts.

Floyd David Saulsberry, 65, of Auburn, Nebraska was born on April 2, 1954 in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Floyd Jr. and Doris Marie (Cotton Saulsberry.  He grew up in Yates Center, Kansas and graduated from Yates Center High School with the class of 1972.  While in high school, David participated in football, basketball and track.  After high school, he attended Fort Scott Community College where he played basketball and received his Associates of Arts Degree in 1974.  David then attended Emporia State College receiving a Bachelor’s Degree of Science and Education in 1977. 

On June 16, 1979, David was united in marriage to Christie Johnson at the United Methodist Church in Berryton, Kansas.  To this union three children, John, Luke and Beth were born.  David went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 8, 2020, passing away at Bryan LGH Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of sixty-five years, ten months and six days. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Kenna Estes.

David is survived by his loving wife Christie Saulsberry of Auburn, NE; sons: John Saulsberry and wife Kaelea of Eagle, NE; Luke Saulsberry and wife Emileigh of Lee’s Summit, MO; a daughter Beth Saulsberry of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Bransen, Charleigh and Beckett Saulsberry of Lee’s Summit, MO; a brother Daniel Saulsberry and wife Stephanie of Pleasanton, KS; a sister Carol Roush and husband Richard of Burlingame, KS; sister-in-law Connie Hoyt and husband Max of El Dorado, KS; brother-in-law Curt Johnson of Holton, KS; and other relatives and friends.

Debra Lynn Patch, 63, of Holton, KS, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. She was born September 28, 1956 in Topeka, KS, the daughter of Joe and Lee (Kern) Collins.

Deb graduated from Holton High School in 1975. She lived all her life in Holton. She was an Administrative Secretary for 31 years at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. She had also worked for 12 years at Trinity Insurance in Topeka.

Deb married Travis W. Patch on October 17, 1981 in Holton, KS. They celebrated over 38 years of marriage.

Survivors include her husband, Travis of the home; her mother, Lee Collins of Holton, KS; 2 sons, Eric Patch (Jenna) of Simpsonville, SC and Adam Patch (Misty) of Topeka, KS; 2 sisters, Connie Whorton (Rex) and Vicki Bontrager (Mark) both of Holton, KS; 6 grandchildren, Landon, Hayden, Karsyn, Easton, Cooper and Milly and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Collins in 2016 and her twin brother, Dan Collins in 2001.

Dorothy was born February 6, 1922, in Leavenworth, KS, the daughter of Allie and Mary (Outersky) Filley. She was a seamstress for Saunders Mop Factory. Dorothy was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Edgerton, MO. She enjoyed sewing, word search and adult coloring books. Dorothy especially enjoyed traveling with her husband to Minnesota a couple times a year to go fishing.

Dorothy married Edward Boatwright on August 17, 1944; he preceded her on February 17, 2006. Survivors include a sister, Mary Kay and Charles Zabel, Boulder, CO, nephews and nieces; Bruce and Phyllis Filley, St. Joseph, MO, Patricia and Kenny Massingill, Bashor, KS, Brent Filley, Hunnewell, MO, Jeff Zabel and Pete Zabel, CO., and numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded by her parents and a brother, Frank Charles Filley.

Darel Willman, 70, Verdon, NE, passed away February 6, 2020 at Falls City, NE. He was born February 19, 1949 at Yankton, SD to Martin and Susan (Slagle) Willman.

He married Lana Handley on September 26, 1970 at Falls City, NE.

Darel was raised at Howard, SK and graduated from Canova High School in 1967. He then worked as a laborer during the construction of Cooper Nuclear Station. He then went to welding school at Tulsa, OK and became a traveling union pipe fitter and traveled the United States for work. He moved back to Verdon in 1978 and he continued pipe fitting and then was a welder for Frontier Trailer Factory and WASP. He was also the greens keeper at Falls City County Club. In 2005 he rejoined the union, retiring in 2010. He was a member of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local #430.

Darel is survived by his wife, Lana of Verdon, sons, Larry and his wife Jennifer of Falls City, Eric and his wife Amy of Owasso, OK, Josh of Omaha, NE, sisters, Sharon Larson of Sioux City, IA, Alice Littrick of Wisconsin, grandchildren, Jaiden, Mia, Garrett and Riley. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Larry, sisters Melva Jeralds and Wilma Jones.

David Warren ‘Dave” Butler, 70 , former Mayor and long time City Commissioner of Atchison KS died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 at his home.

A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00pm on Friday, Feb. 14th, 2020 at the funeral home. Dave was born on May 8, 1949 in Kansas City, KS, the son of Edgar W. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Gullikson) Butler.  He graduated from Atchison High School in 1967 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Kansas in 1972.   David worked with his father in the family Butler RX Prescription business in Atchison. Following his dad’s retirement he owned and operated the business until he joined with Reynolds Drug Store.   Dave also was the first full-time Pharmacist for the Atchison Hospital. After retiring from the hospital pharmacy he volunteered as a pharmacist at the Atchison Community Health Clinic and worked part time for the KEX RX Pharmacy, Atchison, KS.  In 1993 he was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia Award from the National Pharmacy Association for his community service and also named Citizen of the Year by the Atchison Daily Globe. He was a member of the Kansas Pharmacy Association, a former member of the Atchison Jaycees, a member of the National Rifle Assoc, Bellevue Country Club, Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of Scouting, and the Fred Noonan Society, where he served as Secretary-Treasurer. Dave was active in the Elks BPO Lodge serving as Exalted Ruler two times, in 1976 and in 2019.  He was a member of the Atchison Bass Club, Willie’s Coffee Club, had served on the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was an Atchison City Commissioner for over 23 years, and served as Mayor of Atchison for several terms. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, smoking a cigar, and bourbon. Mr. Butler was one of the most dedicated, positive people who never knew a stranger and loved to talk up, promote, and work to improve his home town of Atchison, KS. He was proud of the new bridge project that he and the commission worked so hard on getting built during his time on the commission. He also was an avid KU Basketball Fan and KU Alumnus.

Dave was married to Kathleen M. Bell on Feb. 14, 1976.  Kathy survives of their home in Atchison. Additional survivors include a son Greg J. (Tanya) Butler, Manhattan, KS and daughter Shari S. (Chad) Roth, Newton, KS and five grandchildren Brendan Butler, Madison Roth, Anabel Roth, Riley Roth, and Evie Roth.  His parents, and two brothers, Steven and Harlan, preceded him in death.

Robert Anthony Libel, 46, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at his home in Nortonville, KS.

Robert was born on September 19, 1973 in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Michael Henry, Sr. and Linda Ann (Gutierrez) Libel. Robert attended schools at Jefferson County North and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1992. Robert worked various jobs throughout his life; rock crusher operator and rock crew supervisor for Hamm’s Quarry, bridge construction carpenter in Kansas City, plumber’s assistant, drove trucks for Allan Weishaar Trucking, and owned his own auto repair shop in McLouth for a brief time. Robert enjoyed playing pool, listening to music, working on cars, and along with friends participated in Dirt Track Racing. Robert was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Nortonville Knights of Columbus Council 2093.

Robert is survived by his mother, Linda, of Nortonville; his siblings, Michael (Sheila) Libel, II of Winchester, Andrew Libel, Winchester, Christina Libel, Nortonville, Edward (Tracey) Libel, Winchester, and Lt. Colonel Bryan (Heidi) Libel, West Linn, OR; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Michael, on June 7, 2005.

Lola Flider, 93, of Table Rock, Nebraska passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Colonial Acres in Humboldt, Nebraska. She was born to William and Edna (Jackson) Crawford on September 11, 1926 at DuBois, Nebraska.

Diane A. (Rethman) Mulryan, 74, of Seneca, Kansas, died unexpectantly on February 5, 2020, in her home.

Diane was born on September 20, 1945 to Clement B. and Florentine Olberding Rethman on a farm northwest of St. Benedict. She attended St. Mary’s School in St. Benedict and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1963. Diane worked for Bergman Hyklas from 1962-1964; she was then employed by Elsie’s Place for a year. On October 12, 1964; she married John Mulryan at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. The couple 55 years of marriage; and were the Nemaha/Marshall County Catholic Marriage Prep Coordinators for 32 years. Diane owned and operated Diane’s Day Care for 37 ½ years.

Diane was member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, St. Ann’s Altar Society, a past member of the Church Council and the Communion Coordinators for Rest Home and Shut-Ins since 1977. Diane enjoyed family gatherings and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; she loved to entertain. In her spare time Diane embroidered and played cards.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Alice Mulryan on October 23, 1973; sisters, Anna Sperfslage on August 8, 1995, Charlotte Burdick on September 14, 2010 and Willa Rae Wilhelm on November 22, 2017; and brothers, Clements J. Rethman on June 12, 2008 and Rupert Rethman on January 31, 2014.

She is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Robert (Natalie) Mulryan of Eudora, Kansas and Michael (Shara) Mulryan of Haysville, Kansas; sisters, Rosetta Umscheid of Flush and Roberta Lierz of Sabetha; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Louis A. Reinecke, 98, of Seneca, KS, died on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at Life Care Center in Seneca.

He was born on November 27, 1921, on a farm south of Baileyville, to Aloysius and Anna Krogman Reinecke. He grew up in the Baileyville community, attended school in Baileyville and graduated from Baileyville High School in 1940.  As a young man he helped on the family farm.

On April 8, 1947, he married Mildred E. Burdiek at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca; the couple celebrated 72 years of marriage. The couple lived and farmed north of Baileyville until1957, when the family moved to the Reinecke family homestead southeast of Baileyville. In 1991, Lou and Mildred retired and built a new home in Seneca. Lou and Mildred ran a dairy herd until 1991, where they raised hogs, stock cattle.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, where he had served on the money counters committee and did weekly adoration. Lou loved gardening, playing cards, fishing, going to the coffee shop in his later years, casino trips and being a lifelong farmer.  He found joy and peace driving around looking at crops in the area. He always worked hard and was a quiet, well respected man.

Survivors are his wife, Mildred; three sons, Kenneth (Clara) Reinecke of Baileyville, Linus (Cheryl) Reinecke of Axtell and Galen (Sharon) Reinecke of Seneca; a sister, Angela Tangeman of Seneca; ten grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Lou preceded in death by three children, Marilyn, Joseph and John; four brothers, Anthony, Fred, Carl and Eugene Reinecke; and six sisters, Josephine Altenhofen, Irene Haverkamp, Hilda Reinecke, Mary Ann Reinecke, Rose Reinecke, and Martha Stallbaumer.

Leslie Owen Winsea, 53, of Kansas City, Missouri, beloved brother, son, nephew, uncle and to many a dear friend journeyed on to the eternal resting place we call Heaven on February 2, 2020.

He was born on November 12, 1966 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Leland and Joan Bent Winsea Sr. Leslie attended the Kickapoo Nation School system where he met most of his dear friends he stayed in contact with over the years until his passing. Leslie worked for Action Mailing in Kansas City before he became ill. He was so dedicated to his music, dancing and as we all know his cooking. He had a great passion for preparing many dishes.

From something simple to a few great difficult ones. Yes, he boasted and bragged especially on face book. You were so lucky if you ever had the chance to taste and enjoy his gourmet cooking.

He is survived by three sisters, Christine (Jeff) Pewamo of Horton, Kansas, Lisa Winsea of Topeka, Kansas and Sabrina (Gary) Wabski of Mayetta, Kansas; four brothers,  Michael Winsea of Horton, Kansas, Leland (Marlene) Winsea Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri, Robert Winsea of Hiawatha, Kansas and Joe (Melissa) Winsea of Horton, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Carol Burgess and Brenda Warner.

Franklin Crawford Peters was born July 20, 1929 in Highland, Kansas to John and Blanche Ptomey Peters.  

He grew up running the fields and farm with his brothers and sister in Iowa Point. Frank joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served his Country faithfully and honorably. He was a Warrior Sailor serving in the Korean War and Vietnam War. Frank was a bosun’s mate; the deck sailors who drove the ship, heaved the lines, and made the ship look right. He served on ships such as the USS Breckinridge, the Radford, and the L.Y. Spear. As a Chief Petty Officer, he ran river patrol boats out of Danang, Vietnam. Frank retired as a Senior Chief
Boatswain’s Mate after 24 years of service.

Upon his retirement from the navy he settled in Northeast Kansas. Frank was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and telling sea stories, many of which were true.

He always had a project of some sort in progress and he spent many hours taking care of his dogs. Another favorite pastime was playing practical jokes on his many nieces and nephews who say  that Uncle Frank always had a kind word for them, and they will truly miss him.

Mr. Peters passed away on February 4, 2020 in the Hiawatha Community Hospital after a brief bout with pneumonia.

Mr. Peters is preceded in death by his first wife Tommi Peters, infant son Arthur Dean Peters, step-daughter Nicole Dillon and brother Bill Peters.

 He is survived by wife Dixie Peters, children:  Patricia Peters Martin (Ron), John Karl Peters (Jen), Cheryl Bickley (Brian), several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  Also surviving are siblings:  Pat Olson, Wayne Peters, and Jerry Peters.
                                                                                                                                        A Celebration of Frank’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.  Shane Spangler will officiate.  The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.

Frances “Irene” White, 94, of Holton, KS, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Lexington Park Nursing Home in Topeka, KS. She was born March 24, 1925 in McLouth, KS, the daughter of Carl R. & Ella Mae (Swain) Moses.

          Irene graduated from Basehor High School in 1942. Irene retired from the Kansas Highway Patrol. She also worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, as well as The United States Army Finance Office in Kansas City, MO.

          She was an active member of the Circleville United Methodist Church.

          Irene married Fred White, Jr. on November 30, 1945 at the United Methodist Church in Basehor, KS. They celebrated over 66 years of marriage. Fred preceded her in death on October 21, 2012. Irene was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Carl M. Moses and Alvin Moses; a sister, Mabel White and a grandson, Joseph White.

Survivors include 6 sons, Donald White (Barbara) of Topeka, KS, Ronald White (Mary Kay) of Topeka, KS, Mark White (Mary) of Hiawatha, KS, Stanley White (Wanda) of Mayetta, KS, Steven White (Kelly) of Topeka, KS, Timothy White (Karen) of Tecumseh, KS; 2 daughters, Sharon Hartwich (Stan) of Onaga, KS, and Elaine Harris (Mark) of Topeka, KS; a sister, Connie Pebley (Tom) of Basehor, KS; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth “Liz” Jane Anderson Johnson, 80, of Atchison, Kansas died Sunday, February 2, 2020.

A Celebration of Life will be held later. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home has been entrusted with the cremation and final care.

Liz was born June 10, 1939 in Atchison, daughter of Dr. Winstan L. and Ethel Mullins Anderson. She attended St. Benedict’s Elementary School, Mount St. Scholastica high school and College.

Liz was the YMCA Aquatics Director for over 30 years, sharing her love and knowledge of swimming, aerobics and dance. She was a world record-holding athlete including finishing seven Ironman Triathlons.

She was a member of St. Benedict Parish and her deep faith in God was one of her most admirable qualities. She could do almost anything and she did.

Survivors include daughter, Kelly (Mike) Elias, Atchison; four sons, Kennedy (Angie) Johnson, Lee’s Summit, MO; Lee (Bonnie) Johnson, Maplewood, MN; Jere Becker, Dallas; Dylan (Jennie) Johnson, Dallas; sister, Gere Blair, Lawrence; step-brother, Charles Anderson, Alaska.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents, son, Kevin Johnson; sister, Joan Falk and brother, Dr. Pete Anderson.

Ray Keith Scott, 68, of Atchison KS died Sunday, Feb. 2nd, 2020 at his home unexpectedly.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, Feb. 7th, 2020 at the First Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Sumner Cemetery, south of Atchison. Ray was born on January 12, 1952 in Atchison KS to Faun T. and Marian Grace (Guinn) Scott. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1970, and worked in the maintenance department for Midwest Grain Products, retiring in 2014. Ray was an associate member of the American Legion, served on the Sumner Cemetery Board, coached youth soccer and was a member of the McDonald’s Coffee Club. He enjoyed working on cars, playing pitch and cards, and especially his family.

He was married to Linda Domann on Feb. 1, 1975. Linda survives of the home. Additional survivors include son Tyson (Delaine) Scott, San Diego, CA, daughter Shiloh Scott and Jeff Kohlman, Austin TX, six brothers; Bill Scott, Topeka, KS, Jody Scott, Atchison, KS, Bruce Scott, Nebraska City, NE, Tom Scott, Topeka, KS, Tim Scott, Green Grove, FL, Brad Scott, St. Joseph, MO, four sisters; Sue Seetin, Leavenworth, KS, Juliene Wilson, Wathena, KS, Linda Feek, Atchison, KS, and April Rollison, Leavenworth, KS, three grand puppies, Luna, Echo, and Auggie, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephew. His parents, one brother, Larry E. Scott, and one sister, Cindy Kuykendall preceded him in death.

Rose Mary (Tuley) Barnett, 95, died Thursday, January 30th, 2020 at the Mission Village Care Center, Horton, KS.

Rose Mary Tuley was born on June 13, 1924 in Muscotah, KS the daughter of Frank C. and Bertha B. (Delfelder) Tuley. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1942. Rose Mary was the first cook for the hot lunch program at the Effingham Elementary School, beginning in the 1955-56 school year. In 1966 the school district unified all elementary schools and she prepared meals for all of them at Effingham Grade School. In 1976 she moved to the high school as the kitchen manager. In 1977 she became the supervisor for the district and retired in 1986. Rose Mary was made an Honorary Member of the ACCHS Future Farmers Association. She was a member of the Effingham Union Church, was an active member of Areme Chapter#231 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Effingham. She served several times as Worthy Matron and was District Aid of District # 2, in 1968-69. Rose Mary was very involved with the growth of the Effingham Library through the Effingham Community Club. She served on the Library Board and worked at the library when needed. She and her husband Bob enjoyed camping and after their retirement, they traveled with their dog Tiger to Arizona for a warmer winter for several years.

She was married to Robert A. Barnett on Feb. 19, 1944 in Atchison Kansas. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 2014. Survivors include two daughters; Lana Jo (Berry) Snyder, Deland, FL and Sherry (Jake) Vanderslice, Horton, KS , five grandchildren; Rachael, Kelli, Lucas, Sara and Emily, and eight great grandchildren. Her parents, husband Robert, a son Robert W. Barnett, and daughter, Mary Lou Barnett and a sister, Peggy Dryden preceded her in death.

Sylvia Lorene (Tupa) Taylor, daughter of Frank and Lois (Wissler) Tupa, was born December 6, 1927 in Pawnee City, Nebraska.  She attended Sheridan Country School until her family moved to DuBois, where she graduated from the 8th grade.  Later they moved to a farm south of Humboldt, and she graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1946. 

After high school Sylvia moved to Omaha where she graduated from Commercial Extension Business School.  She embarked on an adventure with her business school friends by moving to California and, for a brief time, working at MGM Studios.  She returned to Omaha where she worked for fifteen years.  She married her first husband, Jim Hill, and had a son, Gary, in 1962.  Sylvia and Gary returned to Humboldt in 1963, and Sylvia took a job as a bookkeeper and teller at Home State Bank (now American National Bank).  She struck up a relationship with George Taylor Sr., a high school classmate and local car dealer, and they were married at the United Methodist Church in Nebraska City, Nebraska on October 19, 1968.  They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in 2019. They made their home in Humboldt until they moved to Colonial Acres Assisted Living in October 2019.

Sylvia worked at Home State Bank for thirty years until her retirement in 1993.  She was a member of Humboldt United Methodist Church where she served on various committees and participated in many activities.  She enjoyed working with George Sr. at the band parents’ stand during the fair while Gary was in the high school band.  She remained active in the community until very recently, having participated in the school summer lunch program the last two summers.  She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, traveling the country to see them in Michigan, Colorado and Iowa, and going out to lunch with the “gals from the bank.”

Sylvia passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Lincoln Bryan East Hospital after a brief illness, thirty-eight years to the day after the death of her mother Lois.  Sylvia was ninety-two years of age at her death.

She is survived by her husband George Sr.; one son Gary and his wife Lisa, of Ames, Iowa and their children Sam and Madeline; stepdaughter Delores and her husband Ron of Loveland, Colorado, their children Heidi and Scott and 5 great grandchildren; stepson George Jr. of Beatrice, Nebraska, his children Ed and Kathryn, and three great grandchildren.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lovell Tupa.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt, Nebraska with Pastor Dorothy Smith officiating.

A register book will be available at the Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska.

Marsha F Crotinger Engelken age 76, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and educator passed away February 1, 2020 with her loving husband by her side.

Marsha was born June 7, 1943 in Syracuse Kansas to William and June Crotinger. She grew up on a farm in Western Kansas, and attended Greeley Co. Schools she her family then moved to Garden City, KS and she graduated from Garden City High School in 1961.  Marsha then went on to attend college at Kansas State University graduating with a degree in secondary education.  Marsha taught in the Manhattan School District till 1996.  After retiring from Manhattan High, she went on to substitute teach in the USD 380 school district until 2006.

She married Alfred Engelken on March 23, 1996 in Manhattan, KS.  They made their home in Vermillion, KS.

Marsha is survived by her husband Alfred, step sons, Jeremiah Engelken, Zachary Engelken (Jennifer), and step-granddaughters, Jaelynn Engelken, Oakley Melvin and Maggie Melvin. Also her siblings, Mary Kaye Chandler (Jerry), Jim Crotinger (Janette), Rod Crotinger (Jolene) Fred Crotinger (Kathy) and Mavis Houk (Glenn) and many nieces and nephews.

Marsha was an avid K-State fan, loved gardening, reading, traveling, cooking and bird-watching.

To honor Marsha’s wishes there will be a celebration of her life Saturday, February 8, 11:00am at the Centralia Community Center, 106 John Riggins Ave, Centralia, KS.   The family will then complete Marsha’s wishes and scattered her ashes at a later date.

Gary David Edelman, 71, of Sabetha, Kansas went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2020.

Gary was born in Sabetha, Kansas on September 29, 1948, the son of David and Lena (Titus) Edelman. He spent his adult life on a farm across the road from his birth place. He graduated from Sabetha High School in 1966 and attended Kansas State University where he met his future wife, Marilyn. They were united in marriage on July 21, 1968 in Wellington, Kansas. To this union was born a daughter, Carrie.

Besides farming and raising livestock, Gary worked as a service tech and salesman for Wenger Manufacturing for 49 years, retiring on December 31, 2017. Gary was a member of the United Methodist Church, served on the Blue Jay Booster Club, SHS Alumni Board, was the President of NEK SEN Energy Group, and also served on the Nemaha County Farm Bureau Board, and the Kansas Young Farmers and Ranchers Board. He was very involved in all of his daughter’s activities from being softball coach to a 4-H leader. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening, but his first priority was his family.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Leroy at birth.

Gary is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his daughter, Carrie (Wayne) Grimm; his granddaughters, Elsie, Sadie, Emmie, Estie, and Nellie; his brother, Mark Edelman; his sisters-in-law, Nancy Edelman and Marty Albertson; his step-dad, Wayne Dettman; and nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.  Interment will be made in the Albany Cemetery.

Dennie Lee Crofford, 77, of Falls City, Nebraska was born August 18, 1942, in Falls City, Nebraska to Kenneth W. and Helen (Stednitz) Crofford.  He was raised in Falls City where he attended public school and graduated from Falls City High School with the class of 1960.  On June 9, 1961, Dennie was united in marriage to Pamela Weik in Holton, Kansas.  To this union a daughter, Lesa, was born.  The couple later divorced.  On August 14, 1976, Dennie was married to Martha Jane Allen at the First Brethren Church in Falls City.  To this union a son, John, was born.  Dennie lived his entire life in Falls City where he was employed at Falls City Meat Company for thirty years.  He enjoyed spending his spare time camping and fishing.  Dennie passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at the Falls City Care Center in Falls City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of seventy-seven years, five months and twelve days.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Barbara (Gene) Killingsworth, son-in-law Jerome Keithley and sisters-in-law Wanda and Beverly Crofford.

Dennie is survived by his loving wife Martha of Falls City, daughters: Lesa Crofford of Falls City, Michelle Keithley of Falls City, Victoria Cook and Kevin Beckner of Falls City, a son John Crofford of Grand Island, grandchildren: Jordan Keithley of Falls City, Brittany (Michael) Hunter of Dallas, TX; Brandon (Ashley) Keithley of Falls City, Rachael Keithley of Maryville, MO; Ryan Keithley of Omaha, Zachary and Nicholas Keithley of Falls City, Cameron Gill of Lincoln, Amanda Gill of Falls City, Milayna Crofford of Falls City, Creighton Crofford of Falls City, great-grandchildren: Gracie and Bryer Gill of Falls City, brothers: Jerry Crofford of Falls City, Roger Crofford of Falls City, Terry (Cathy) Crofford of Carl Junction, MO; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
