Marvin C. Long, 79, of Holton, KS, formerly of Hoyt, KS, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Medicalodges Jackson County. He was born September 21, 1937 in Vermillion, KS the son of Wm. Harold and Eva (Gough) Long.
Marvin graduated from Axtell High School in 1955 and later attended the University of Kansas. He then went on to proudly serve in the National Guard Army Reserve. After spending his early years in the Marshal County Area, he moved to Jackson County in 1961 and lived there for the rest of his life. He worked as a carpenter, contractor, and estimator for the Holton Lumberyard.
On December 20, 1957, Marvin married Margaret Brownfield in Circleville, KS, they later divorced. On October 30, 1989, Marvin married Clara L. Perry in Mayetta, KS, she survives of the home.
Survivors include two daughters, Kellie (Kenny) Bryan of Hoyt, KS and Barbara (Jeff) Brown of Topeka, KS; two sisters, Almetta “Jackie” Bottom of Soldier, KS and Sandra Sawyer of Hoyt, KS; 4 Brothers, Albin “Leon” Long of Topeka, KS, Glen Dale Long of Meriden, KS, Dwight Long of Topeka, KS, and Randy Long of Topeka, KS; 4 Grandchildren; and 6 Great-Grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his son, Barry Louroy Long and a brother Denzel Long.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends from 6:00 – 7:30 pm, Monday evening, at the funeral home.

Goldie “June “Scholz, 93 of Lancaster, KS died Sat. August 19, 2017 at her home.
Funeral services will be 2:30 pm Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017 at the Lancaster United Methodist Church with Rev. Seth Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the Lancaster Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday, Aug. 22rd, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. June was born on June 8, 1924 on the family farm near Old Huron the daughter of Charles Garold and Wilma Leena (Miller) Harden. June’s mother passed away when June was eleven years old. Her father later married her step –mother Violet (Stirton) Harden. June attended Old Huron grade school and graduated from Effingham High School in 1941. After graduating, June taught at various one room school houses until 1946. On May 3, 1946 June was married to Roy Arthur Scholz at the parsonage in Effingham, KS. They were married for 67 years until Roy passed away on Dec. 28, 2013. June attended the Huron Presbyterian Church until her marriage when she became a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church where she was active in many duties during the years including delegate to National conferences, serving on the Church Council and leading Sunday School Classes. She was also actively involved in the community. June enjoyed all kinds of craft work such as sewing, crochet, quilting, and candle making to name a few, and always enjoyed sharing these with others. She also enjoyed traveling and had the privilege of traveling to 46 of the Continental States plus Hawaii and Alaska as well as the Holy Land.
Survivors include two sons, Ron (Miriam) Scholz, Denton, KS, and Rex (Stacy) Scholz, Huron, KS, seven grandchildren, Erica (Shane) Foster, Mark(Monica) Scholz, Brad(Jenny) Scholz, David, Lisa, Joey and Koby Scholz and nine great grandchildren, four brothers, Charles (Mary) Harden, Mayetta, KS, Gary Harden, Dean (Pam) Harden, and Allen (Cindy) Harden, Lancaster, KS, and three sisters, Boots Bowen, Parkville, MO, Joyce (Bob) Smith, Kearney, MO, and Donna (Gary) Hegwood, Lancaster, KS. Her parents, step-mother, husband , a son, Ricky Dean Scholz, brothers, William “Bill” and Norman “Pat” Harden and nephew Mike Harden preceded her in death.

JumpStart Funding Awarded to Agriculture Entities
MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Agriculture partnered with the Kansas Department of Commerce to award funds to Kansas entrepreneurs to encourage innovation and entrepreneurial spirit within the agriculture industry. These funds are made available this summer by the JumpStart Kansas Entrepreneur program.
Nine Kansas-based businesses were awarded $10,000 each after completing an application and being reviewed by a committee. An additional 13 FFA members were awarded funds to be used towards their supervised agricultural experience projects.
The businesses selected were: IN10T, Lenexa; Skyview Farm and Creamery, Pleasanton; Organization for Sustainable Living – Salem Farms, Topeka; High Plains Food Co-op, Atwood; VisionHawk UAS, Great Bend; FarmScore, Manhattan; Family N Farm LLC, Effingham; HiberVine Vineyard Management, Manhattan; and Dragon-Line, Ulysses. The FFA members selected were: Dakota Hagenmaier, Blue Valley FFA; Jose Garcia, Southern Lyon County FFA; Brenden Meek, Spring Hill FFA; Jordan Norman, Spring Hill FFA; Emma Miller, Southern Lyon County FFA; Kandace Inman, Columbus FFA; Ryan Klamm, Buhler FFA; Hanna Wetter, Blue Valley FFA; Will Johnson, Blue Valley FFA; Blake Chance, Royal Valley FFA; Brady Trimble, Valley Heights FFA; Angela Prebyl, Marysville FFA; and Kate Schoenberg, Spring Hill FFA.
“Agriculture is the largest economic driver in Kansas, so statewide economic growth depends on agricultural growth,” said Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Jackie McClaskey. “This program will expand opportunities for agricultural innovation across the state of Kansas, and we are committed to supporting forward-thinking leaders in the agriculture industry who are leading these projects.”
This program will allow individuals who do not have access to adequate funds to make their innovative ideas a reality. Kansas agriculture has developed specific desired outcomes for growth in the agricultural technology and entrepreneurship sector, with an objective to foster a business environment that supports new and expanding enterprises. This project directly addresses an outcome by providing start-up capital to agricultural entrepreneurs through the JumpStart Kansas Entrepreneur program.

Mildred “Marie” Robinson, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday morning, August 16, 2017, at Overland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.
Mildred Marie Candis Favors-Robinson was born to Thomas “Pete” and Edname Whitehall-Favors April 17, 1914 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Marie which she was called by family and friends grew up in a small close knit, loving community in Elwood, Kansas where she attended Elwood Elementary School and graduated from Elwood High School. Marie joined the First Baptist Church of Elwood where she was member for many years.
On August 19, 1939, she was united in marriage to Walter B. Robinson, known by family and friends as “Walt” and moved to Hiawatha. To this union they were blessed with two children, Walter Favors and Florence Edna Marie. God blessed Marie and Walt with over 47 years of wedding bliss till his sudden death in December 1986.
When World War II broke out and Walt joined the U.S. Army, Marie moved to Omaha, NE where she attended and graduated from Althouse Beauty School and became a licensed cosmetologist. To help in providing a comfortable living for her family, Marie worked as a cook at the Hiawatha Grade School for many years as well as doing hair in her home for people throughout the community. She also worked as a caregiver outside the home. Marie joined the Second Baptist Church of Hiawatha in September of 1948 where she remained an active member until her health began to fail. She was also an active member of Eastern Star Oziel Chapter #30.
She leaves to mourn her two loving children, Walter Favors (Thelma Fuqua) Robinson of Oakland, CA and Florence (Michael) Grayson of Kansas City, KS, a sister Peggy Smith of Brookfield, MO. Two grandchildren, Joy (Stephen) Robinson-Melendez of Jackson, NJ and Robert “RD” Adamson, Jr. of Lee’s Summit, MO and one great grandchild Robert D. “Tre?” Adamson III of Lee’s Summit, MO and a very special sister-in-love in with whom she shared the same birthday, April 17th, Florence Combs of Hiawatha, KS as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Preceding her in death are three sisters: Alice “Dutch” Burns, Ruth Roseby, Georgianna “Sis” Chambers and three brothers: Thomas “TW”, Prentice “PJ”, and Virgil Favors.
A Celebration of Marie’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, August 19, at Second Baptist Church, 308 S 9th St, Hiawatha. Burial will follow at the Hiawatha Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, after 12 noon Friday, where the family will visit from 6 until 8 that evening.

Neola L. Wood Risinger, 86, Perry, formerly of Valley Falls, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, at a Topeka care facility.
She was born Feb. 19, 1931, at Denison, the daughter of Harold E. and Grace Ferrell Scarlett. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1949.
Neola owned and operated Valley Falls Barber Shop for 37 years. She was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church and had attended the Valley Falls Christian Church.
She married Norman Wood, Aug. 26, 1948, at Fayetteville, AR. He died Aug. 13, 1961. She was a homemaker in Denison and then moved to Valley Falls with her children in 1963. She married Carl Risinger, June 5, 1965, at Valley Falls. He died Aug. 20, 2014.
She was also preceded in death by a son in infancy, Jerry Lee Wood; two brothers, Devere and Everett Scarlett; and three sisters, Arlene Gier, Marilyn Kesinger, and Jane Etzel.
Survivors include two sons, Charles (Kathy) Wood, Olathe, and Roger (Ruth) Wood, Meriden; a daughter, Renae (Andy) Pritchard, Perry; four brothers, Marlin Scarlett, Sabetha, Harlin and Gary Scarlett, both of Topeka, and John Scarlett, Wellsville; three sisters, Anita Grahem, Meriden, Leota Bolz, Topeka, and Helen Gibson, Rapid City, SD; 11 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Aug.19, 2017, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial will be at the Denison Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday.

George Fredrick “Gerry” Elliott, 75, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday morning, August 16, 2017, at home surrounded by his family.
Gerry, how he was known to family and friends, was born May 1, 1942, at Hiawatha, one of two children of Fred and Lyle Hegenderfer Martin and had lived in Hiawatha nearly all of his life. He grew up in Hiawatha where he attended schools, graduating Hiawatha High School with the class of 1960. Gerry attended and earned a BSE degree from Emporia State Teachers College.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal, and served with the 9th Infantry Division, discharged at the rank of Specialist E5. He finished his military service with the Kansas Army National Guard in 1970. After returning from Vietnam, he secured a teaching position in Bonner Springs.
He spent 45 years working as an electrician before retiring a couple years ago. Gerry enjoyed doing electrical work with his grandfather F.H. Hegenderfer. Among the many things they built were the magazine racks for Morrill Free Public Library, Hiawatha.
Gerry was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, including hunting and fishing.
He married Hallie Pride, October 3, 1998, at Bonner Springs, KS. She survives of the home.
Also surviving are his children Marcy Elliott of Hiawatha, her daughter Brittany Johnson, granddaughter Arya Johnson; Misty (Elliott) Stewart of Florida; step-sons Donald Wooddell and Franklin Wooddell, both of Hiawatha; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother in law Diane and Jim Eichelberger.
A Celebration of Gerry’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 23, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Wolf River Cemetery #3, near Everest.
The family will meet with friends one hour prior to service Wednesday.

Bernice Lucille Jones, 96, of Holton, KS passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Medicalodges Jackson County. She was born February 5, 1921 in Soldier, KS the daughter of Charles and Dolly (Murphy) Kranz.
Bernice was awarded her G.E.D. and attended Soldier schools. She was a life-long member of the Jackson County community. Bernice began her career at Slimaker Dress Factory and later worked as a CNA & CMA at Jackson County Nursing Home (currently named Medicalodges Jackson County), retiring after 25 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, and volunteering at Head Start in Holton, KS. Bernice was a member of the Holton First Baptist Church.
Bernice married Willis Jones on December 12, 1942. He preceded her in death on July 27, 1973. She later married Oliver R. Jones on January 25, 1975. He preceded her in death on October 19, 2001.
Survivors include 2 stepdaughters, Jean Brewer of Ontario, OR and Darlene Wade of Fruitland, ID; 4 grandchildren, Jeff Sanchez (Shelly) and Lisa Dodson (Tim), both of Kearney, MO, Tammy Sanchez of Lawrence, KS, and Julie Gregory (Scott) of Linwood, KS; 9 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marylou Sanchez in 2011; a son, Ronald A. Jones in 2012 and 2 step-daughters, Shirley Fellman and Donna Cook.
Memorial Services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. A private family Inurnment will be in the Holton Cemetery. (February 25, 1969 - August 1, 2017) Joseph Andrew Taisipic, 48, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on August 1, 2017 in an automobile accident west of Horton, Kansas. He was born on February 25, 1969 in Portsmouth, Virginia, the son of Joseph and Julia Delgado Taisipic. Joe served in the U.S. Army from 1989 to 1993. He most currently worked for CJ Foods in Bern, Kansas. Survivors include his mother, Julia Taisipic of Yona, Guam; father, Joseph Taisipic of Tuscan, Arizona; four sons, James Adams of Moore, Oklahoma, Michael Taisipic of Topeka, Kansas, Tobin Wabnum of Holton, Kansas and Skylar Wabnum of Everest, Kansas; two daughters, Kathryn Wabnum of Holton, Kansas and Jalesia Taisipic of Horton, Kansas; three brothers, Thomas Taisipic of Yona, Guam, Edward Taisipic of Hobart, Indiana and John Taisipic of Yona, Guam; one granddaughter, Emberly Stout. The funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday evening at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary with visitation to follow. Inurnment will be at the Guam Memorial Park Cemetery in Barrigada, Guam. Robert C. Blain, 68 of Falls City, NE, passed away July 31, 2017 at Falls City, NE. He was born April 30, 1949 at New York, NY to Earl and Antoinette (Passerelli) Blain.
Following graduation from High School, on August 23rd 1967 he enlisted in the US Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War earning a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, Marksmanship badge and a Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged on July 26, 1971. Robert moved to Falls City in 2007 where he remained until his death.
Robert is survived by his son, Eric Blain and his fiance’ Kayla Mattingly of Springfield, MO, daughter, Amy Blain of Falls City, grandson, Samuel Blain of Springfield and Step-grandson, Elgin James of Springfield.
As per Robert’s wishes his body has been cremated and no services are planned.
