Zita Ebel, 75, of Lincoln, NE, formerly of Falls City, NE, passed away July 29, 2026 at Lincoln. She was born April 2, 1951 at Falls City to Pete and Zella (Schlicker) Schawang

She married Gene Ebel on September 13, 1969 at Falls City. He passed away July 23, 2004.

Zita was raised at Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School in 1969. When married the couple established their home in Falls City and later moved to a farm west of Reserve, KS. She was a homemaker and farm wife. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for various places in and around Falls City, including the farm and G and Z Trucking. She retired in 2012. She moved to Lincoln in 2023 and has lived there since. She was an active member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church at 20th and Towle St. in Falls City and DOES Drove of Falls City.

Zita is survived by her children, Gena Vang and her husband Chris of Elkhorn, NE, Karen Soward and her husband Levi and Marissa Ebel both of Lincoln, Chip and his wife Sara of Falls City, brothers, Joe Schawang and his wife Cheryl of Olathe, KS, Mike Schawang and his wife Janet of Omaha, sister, Lisa Moormeier and her husband Kiven of Roca, NE, grandchildren, Connor and Camden Soward, Isaiah and Noah Vang. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 20th and Towle St. with Elysia McGill officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

Freda M. Pickman, age 91, of Atchison, KS, died Thursday, July 30, 2026, at an assisted living facility in Lawrence, KS. 

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 3, at St. Joseph Church in Atchison. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, and a luncheon will be in the lower level of St. Joseph Church. A parish rosary will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, August 2, followed by a Nightingale Service and visitation until 5:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. 

Freda was born the daughter of the late Fred H. and Margaret (Moranz) Halling and raised on a farm near Denton, KS. She spent 1st-7th grades at the one-room Star School, 8th grade at Denton grade school and 9th-12th grade at Denton High School. In high school,she played on the school’s basketball team and was crowned the County Apple Queen. She earned her RN license at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing. 

The early death of her mother when Freda was just 14 compelled her to help raise her younger siblings, thus shaping her path forward as a loving caregiver. She continued that spirit in her professional life as a respected nurse and in her personal life as a devoted, charitable member of the Catholic Church.

She married Jerome P. Pickman on November 26, 1957, at St. Benedict Church in Bendena, KS. Freda cared for Jerome in his later years, and he preceded her in death on July 10, 2015, after nearly 60 years of marriage. She worked in the office of W.L. Anderson, MD, and later at Atchison Hospital until her retirement. 

Freda could often be found laboring in her flower beds and garden, and she loved baking and cooking for friends and family. (Her pies and fried chicken were highly sought after at church bazaars.) Freda was also a devoted sports fan, proudly wearing KC Royals, KC Chiefs and KU Basketball gear. 

She is survived by her three adopted children, Theresa Bowser of Lecompton, KS, Ann Niccum (Jon) of Lawrence, KS, and Brian Pickman (Sherri) of Marceline, MO; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Freda is predeceased by her parents, husband and siblings, Albert Halling, Paul Halling, Mary Schletzbaum, Louella Wagner and infant sister Rita Cecelia Halling.

James “Jim” Edward Holthaus, 76, of rural Horton, Kansas, unexpectedly passed away at his home on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Jim was born on March 21, 1950, in Centralia, Kansas, to Cyril and Emma (Deters) Holthaus. He graduated from Horton High School in 1968.

On June 5, 1971, Jim married the love of his life, Judy Lott, at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and farming. Jim worked for numerous local farmers and at Gaskell Bolt before accepting a position at Goodyear, where he worked for five years. In 1980, he and Judy began farming together, working side by side to build Holthaus Farms. Jim continued farming until the day of his passing.

Jim was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with Judy, taking drives through the countryside to check on the crops, and cheering on his grandchildren at their many activities. His greatest joy was his family, and he treasured every opportunity to be together.

He is survived by his four children: Heather (Daryl) Struble of Freeport, Kansas; Darcie (Andrea) Holthaus of Lawrence, Kansas; Troy Holthaus of Horton, Kansas: Julie (Mark) McAfee of Horton, Kansas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Justin (Madison), Memphis, Mya, Millie, Patrick, and Reicher; his great-grandchildren, Priscilla, Archie, and Lucille; his sister, Ruby (Harold) Heinen; and his brothers, Mike Holthaus and Clint Holthaus and brother-in-law, Gary Handke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril and Emma Holthaus; his beloved wife, Judy; his sisters, Barbara Jones, Kathy Handke, and Pam Holthaus; and his brother, Stan Holthaus.

A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026, at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The family will greet friends immediately following the Rosary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery.

Phyllis F. Chapman, age 74, of Effingham, KS, passed on July 27, 2026, at Mosaic Life Care.

A visitation will be on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 12 Noon until 1:00 PM at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. A procession to the cemetery will leave the funeral home at 1:00 PM for a Graveside Service at 1:30 PM at Sumner Cemetery.

Phyllis was born on September 25, 1951, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Harold and Mary (Clem) Wilburn. She attended St. Pat’s Elementary, graduating from Atchison High School, before continuing at Vo-Tech.

Phyllis was an LPN at the Medicalodge of Atchison for thirty years where she truly cared for the residents. When at home, she enjoyed playing with and spoiling her cows and chickens and working in the garden.

She is survived by her children, Rhonda (Paul) Williams, Yvonne (Brenda) Funk, Ronnie (Jamie) Funk, Wendy Hubbard; sisters, Mary Tucker, Kelly Wilburn; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; her life companion, Howard Tull; numerous nieces and nephews; and her two dogs, Butter and Biscuit.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harold P. Wilburn and Earl Wilburn; and a granddaughter; Heather Trainer.

Bessie Lorraine (McKinsey) Swain was born on May 2, 1924, to Otto and Stella (Peasley) McKinsey at home in a stone house built by her maternal grandfather, William Peasley. She grew up there with her older sister, Mary, and younger brother, Vern, enjoying the beauty of the countryside. During her early school years, the three siblings rode their horse, Mable, to the one-room schoolhouses at Avoca and Bucks Grove. She later attended Soldier Rural High School, where she graduated in 1942.

While attending Soldier Rural High School, Bessie met her high school sweetheart, Floyd Swain. The couple married and, following World War II, made their home in Topeka, Kansas, where their first daughter, Marion, was born. They later purchased a small farm east of Soldier before eventually moving into town, where they welcomed their second daughter, Ruth.

Floyd preceded Bessie in death on March 5, 2002.

Bessie is survived by her daughters, Marion (Mike) of Irvine, California, and Ruth of Holton, Kansas. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Chris (Adrienne) and Emily; Mike's daughter, Shelly; Jill, Keith, and Julie (Corey); and her great-grandchildren, Ella, Landon, Lia, Michael, Caity, Emily, Paxton, Zachary, Thane, and MacKenzie.

Throughout her working years, Bessie was employed by Pelletier's in Topeka, J.C. Penney in Holton, Kmart in Topeka, and Walmart in Holton.

Until celebrating her 100th birthday in 2024, Bessie lived independently in Holton. She later became a resident of Redbud Plaza Assisted Living in Onaga, where she lived for a year, before spending her final months at Eastridge Nursing Home in Centralia.

Bessie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved to cook and was especially known for her delicious apple pies, earning her the affectionate nickname, "Apple Pie Grandma." An accomplished seamstress, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidery, and teaching others to sew. Her beautifully embroidered tea towels became treasured keepsakes, and she lovingly made quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Life brought Bessie her share of hardships, but she faced them with quiet determination and remarkable resilience. Although she would become a bit incensed whenever someone called her a "tough old bird," those who knew her understood that her strength, perseverance, and unwavering spirit were among her most admirable qualities.

Bessie will be available for viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, and Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. The family will greet friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the funeral home. A private burial will follow at Bucks Grove Cemetery.

William “Gene” Eugene Ballue, 57, of Beatrice, NE, passed away July 26, 2026 at his residence. He was born October 2, 1968 at Auburn, NE to James and Dorothy Ballue.

He married Patricia Kaster in 1988 and they divorced in 1991, in 1993 he married Lori Bradley and they divorced in 1996. He married Darla Adams in 2006. She passed away in 2018.

Gene worked as a welder for many years until his health forced him to retire. He had a great love for Tinkering with anything he could do in the garage. One of his joys was taking his children fishing and spending time with his grandchildren doing various fun activities. He encouraged others to stop by and chat as that was what he loved to do. His love for fireworks and the 4th of July and love for homemade fireworks took him to the ER to come home with a finger missing for a great conversation piece. The Nebraska Cornhuskers was one of his favorite things to watch on TV.

Gene is survived by his children, children Corey and his wife Molly Ballue of Beatrice, Cameron and his wife Beth of Nehawka, Ashley Gibson and her wife Megan of Beatrice, Adam Gibson and fiancé Brittney of Beatrice, 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Cecil and Helen Miller, Uncle Norman Miller, Aunt Evelyn Hoak, and wife Darla.

Gene’s memorial service will be held Monday August 3, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Maple Cemetery in Salem Nebraska.

Raymond Charles Becker, 84, of Lancaster, Kansas peacefully finished a life fully lived on July 25, 2026, with his family nearby. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 10 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Purcell, Kansas, with a reception to follow. A parish rosary will be on Tuesday, July 28 at 6 PM with visitation to follow until 8 PM at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Benedict’s Abbey or the St. Mary’s Cemetery and may be left in care of the funeral home. 

Born Sept. 4, 1941, in Axtell, Kansas, to the late Esther and Henry Becker, Raymond attended Saint Mary's Grade School, Everest Rural High School, St. Benedict's College and Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, before being commissioned in the U.S. Air Force. 

Raymond married Mary Jo Normile in 1963 and embarked on a 28-year military career, which included eight years of active duty with the Strategic Air Command and 20 years as a navigator in the Missouri Air National Guard. 

Retiring in 1991 after Operation Desert Storm, Raymond continued his farming career in Northeast Kansas and also worked as a financial planner for First Command Financial in Leavenworth and Caudle Financial Services in Atchison. 

Raymond savored family traditions - fish frys, hunting trips with friends, his sons, and his dogs, holiday gatherings, trips to Kauffman Stadium, and Benedictine College football games in the fall. He cherished time with his 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren as much as possible. 

Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jo, and their four sons: David (Gail), Mike (Marci), Timothy (Kelli), and Patrick (Cathy); his brothers John, Myron, Bob, and Tom; and his grandchildren Micaela, Rachel, Caroline, Garrett, Reagan, Austin, Brock, Conner, Grace, Carson, and Devin. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Henry; brothers Emmet, Paul, Leo, and Joe; and sisters Frieda Stovell and Alice Keller.

Leona Marlene McKim, 92, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 23, 2026 at Falls City. She was born December 1, 1933 at Wamego, KS to Elias M and Marguerite (Homewood) Bachman.  She married Raymond S McKim, Jr October 7, 1950 in Falls City. He passed away November 25, 1970.

 

Marlene was raised on the family farm south of Rulo. At the age of four she started first grade at District 91 better known as the “Y” school. She was proud of the fact that she recited the poem word for word “The Night Before Christmas” at the school Christmas program even before she started school. Marlene graduated Falls City High School in 1950.

One of thirteen children she helped her two older sisters hand milk the cows before and after school each day.  She was strong willed even as a child and found herself at the top of a tree where she could get away from her mother when she was in trouble and her mom would remind her she had to come down sometime. Mom had many stories she shared of her younger years.

Marlene worked at various businesses over the years including Fleskoski’s Food Basket, The Falls City Creamery, as a bookkeeper at Sur Gro Fertilizer, Falls City Pet Foods, Fortescue Elevator, and Novak Realty.

She was a member of Riverside Fellowship church in Rulo and through the years had taught Sunday school and church youth groups.  She was a Blue Bird – Campfire girl’s leader, served on the school PTA committees, was a softball coach for teenage girls, and was active in the American Legion and VFW auxiliaries, American Heart Association, Red Cross Blood Mobile and the Census. For several years she was the crew foreman for the girls detasseling corn crews bussed over into Missouri. Marlene was a lifetime member of the Falls City BPO DOES organization serving for seventy years in various offices locally as well as the Nebraska District and the Iowa Minnesota Nebraska East District. But of all her “jobs” her most important and dear to her heart was being mom and grandmother.

She is survived by her children Linda (Mark) Jilek of rural Rulo, Cathy O’Grady, Jerry (Nancy) McKim, and Karey Weaver all of Falls City and Nancy (John) Fischer of Hiawatha,  twenty-four grandchildren, fifty-one great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, siblings Louise Pfankuche, Kansas City, Mo, Marjorie Surman, Rulo, Ruth Leineman, Robinson, Ben (Sandy) Bachman, Falls City, Wauneta (Jim) Catlett, Kansas City, MO, Bob Bachman, Rulo, Gary (Cindy) Bachman, Falls City and Rita (Steve) Johansen, Rulo, numerous nieces and nephews survive her. She was preceded in death by sisters Bernice Adams and Alice Crouch, brother Ronald Bachman, grandson, Aaron O’Grady, sons-in-law, Neal Frost and John O’Grady.

Her funeral services will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor David Showalter officiating. Interment will be in Rulo Cemetery.

Janet Lynn Crawford went home to be with the Lord on July 20, 2026 at F.W. Huston Hospital in Winchester, KS. Jan was born, the first born of a set of twins, April 20, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri to Walter and Elvina (Turnbull) Scherer. She graduated from Rosedale High School in Kansas City, KS and got her teaching degree at Bethel College in Newton KS. Continuing her education, she received her bachelor's degree at Central Christian College in McPherson, KS and Master's Degree in Home Economics from Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, WA.

Jan spent most of her teaching career with the Kansas State School for the Blind. There she taught low vision & blind students Family & Consumer Science, including Activities of Daily Living. Jan also served as the first Outreach Vision Teacher, traveling to communities across the state to provide consultation support services to outstate vision teachers. In retirement, Jan continued serving as an advocate for students with visual impairments & their families. She received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired in 1998. She also taught Home Economics in Valley Falls, KS and schools in Western Kansas early in her career.

Jan married James T. Crawford on December 22, 1990 in McLouth, KS. He brought to the union 2 children which Jan always treated as her own. After Jim’s lengthy health battle ended in 2022, Jan lived her best life enjoying various clubs and groups full of creative, strong, supportive women including, Kansa Prairie Quilters, Kuntry Club, Ladies of the Lake, Odd Dots and Grief Share among others. She loved sewing, playing games, watching movies and planning parties. The legacy she leaves behind is one of kindness and friendship.

She is survived by daughter, Carolyn (Mike) Lang, Perry, KS, son, J.T. (Amy) Crawford, Osage City, KS, sister, Donna Scherer, Independence, MO, three grandchildren, Claire (Corey) Thomas, Reid (fiancé Marley) Crawford and Greta Crawford , great-grandson Judah Thomas, nephew Todd (Brenda) Scherer, beloved cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin sister Jeannie Scherer and brother Walter Scherer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls with burial to follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Russell J. “Rusty” Zeigler, 66, of Salem, NE, passed away July 22, 2026 at Salem. He was born February 19, 1960 at Falls City, NE to Robert and Vivian (McIlvain) Zeigler

Rusty entered the Nebraska National Guard in 1978 and served in Falls City with Company B until 1983.

He married Tanya Windle February 28, 1986 at Salem.

Rusty was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School with the class of 1978. Following graduation, in addition to his service in the National Guard, he worked in various slaughter houses, Mickelberry’s, did logging and had a saw mill and drove a semi. He retired in 2020. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He was a member of the Falls City Elks.

Rusty is survived by his wife, Tanya of Salem, children, Felicia Martin and her husband John of Salem, Orrin of Salem, father, Robert of Falls City, sister, Vickie Zeigler of Falls City, brother, Ryan of Lincoln and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and a granddaughter, Brynn Martin.

Rusty has been cremated and a graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Steele Cemetery

Candace K. Sheeley, 68, of Effingham, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, at her home surrounded by friends and family.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 31, 2026, at Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas, with Kirk Pemberton officiating the service. Candace was born on May 31, 1958, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Bobby Dean and Grace E. (Newman) Sheeley. She worked as an architect until 2007 when she retired and moved back to the farm. She was a member of New Covenant United Methodist Church in Nortonville. She enjoyed farming, cooking, reading, traveling, and being in charge. She was on the FSA (Farm Service Agency) Board and the Pantry of Hope Board.

Survivors include her sister Rachel Sheeley and her brother Collin Sheeley. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Donald "Don" Lavern Siske of Pawnee City died Saturday, July 18 at the age of 89.

A funeral service for Don Siske of Pawnee City will be Saturday morning, ( 7/25) at 11 at the Salem U.C.C. Church of rural Steinauer.

The service will be live-streamed on the Wherry Mortuary Facebook page and a link to the livestream will be available after the service on Don's webpage. 

Interment at 2:30 p.m., at the Bohemian (Czech) Cemetery, east of Table Rock.

Jessie Snider, 91, passed away Monday July 20, 2026. She was the oldest of four siblings, born in Brownell, KS to Kenneth Lyle and Julia Edith Mae (Jones) Barnes. Jessie was raised in Kinsely, Kansas and graduated High School there. She married Richard Snider of Offerle, Kansas on January 4, 1955. They moved to Salina, Kansas and raised their family there. After retiring they moved to Hiawatha to be near their daughter and family.

Jessie worked at Dillons Grocery Stores in Salina, Kansas, retiring after working for them for over 25 years. After moving to Hiawatha, she worked at McDonald’s as the morning shift manager for several years. She also cleaned houses in Hiawatha. Jessie loved to clean house and was always the first person to jump in and help no matter what needed to be done. Jessie volunteered with the Gray Ladies at the Hiawatha Hospital and was active with St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Later in life she enjoyed making beautiful quilts for her family, baking, and spending time with her family. Her family was her biggest joy, she loved being around them, playing cards with them, and always wanted to know all the stories about their adventures.

Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (2022) after 67 years of marriage, her parents; one sister (Lila); three brothers (John, Robert, and Donald “Tookie”); and her son, Richard (Rick) Snider.

She is survived by a son Mark Steven (Marissa) Philippines, daughter Angel (Dale) Elliott of Hiawatha. Grandsons Jeremy (Nicole) Dolisi, Hiawatha and John Snider (Suffolk, VA). Great grandchildren, Shae, Thane, and Blade Dolisi, JR and Hunter Snider. Special sister in-laws, Jan Barnes and Nancy Barnes. Many treasured nieces and nephews, along with many friends that she enjoyed throughout life.

Cremation is planned with private inurnment at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Per requested no services are planned at this time.

She would be happiest instead of memorials that people would go buy themselves ice cream, smile, reflect on life, and the gift of God while enjoying her favorite treat (Strawberry being her very favorite)! Sarah Alveda Heideman, 88, of Seneca, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Alveda was born on March 4, 1938, at her family home in Seneca, the only child of Merlin C. and Oretha Sarah (Miller) Myers.

She grew up in Seneca, attended Seneca Public Schools, and graduated with the Class of 1956. On October 27, 1956, she married the love of her life, Donald B. Heideman, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Together they built a life centered on faith, hard work, and family, sharing nearly 70 years of marriage.

After marrying, Alveda devoted herself to being a homemaker, lovingly raising her children and creating a warm and welcoming home. Once her children were grown, she entered the workforce, where her strong work ethic and cheerful spirit made a lasting impression wherever she worked.

Throughout the years, Alveda wore many hats. She waitressed at the Prairie Lounge, Friendly Diner, and Main Street Drive-In, served as head cook for Seneca Public Schools, and worked at both Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney in Seneca. She also spent countless hours helping others by cleaning homes and ironing clothes for many of the elderly residents in the community. In addition, she shared her musical talents by teaching piano lessons to area students.

Alveda enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, watching hummingbirds, camping, and attending car races. She especially treasured the time she spent with her family. She was a caring and hardworking woman whose Christian faith guided the way she lived her life.  She was a faithful member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca and belonged to the Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Merlin and Oretha Myers; her granddaughter, Jennifer Stallbaumer; and her great-grandson, Preston Wichman.

Alveda leaves behind her beloved husband of 69 years, Donald Heideman, of the home; her children, Sherly Betts of Seneca, Jan (Rick) Stallbaumer of Tecumseh, Mike (Lisa Schmitz) Heideman of Seneca, and Mark Heideman of Meriden; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.

A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2026, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Carrie Hall, age 53 of Falls City, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2026, in Falls City.

Survivors include her husband Noha Vice of Falls City; sons Logan Vice of Shubert and Luke Vice of Stella; daughter-in-law Cazzie Vice of Johnson; grandchildren Hattie, Holland, Kegan, Chloe, Kinley, Camdyn, Lainey, Greyson, Linkin, and Brinle; mother and stepfather Dona Hall and Lonnie Wing; stepsister Stephanie (Juan) Padilla of Lincoln; other relatives and many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 24, 10:30 a.m. at Wayside Gathering near Stella. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 5:00 to 7:00.

John Philip “Phil” Boos, 84, of Atchison, KS, passed peacefully on July 16, 2026, with his family at his side.

Mass of Christian burial will be on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11 AM at St. Joseph Church in Atchison with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. The rosary will be on Thursday, July 23 at 6 PM with visitation to follow until 8 PM at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Phil was born on December 15, 1941, in Atchison, KS, to the late Dolores (Kramer) and Edward Boos and was raised in the Good Intent Community. He began his education at St. Louis School and graduated from Maur Hill Prep in 1959. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1964 from St. Benedict’s College where he also was a running back on the football team. Phil always had a love for sports and continued to be a big fan and supporter of Maur Hill and Benedictine athletics and KSU football throughout his life.

He married Kathryn Elizabeth “Betty” Haegelin on August 10, 1963, at St. Benedict Church, celebrating nearly 63 years of marriage. Phil and Betty continued as active parishioners of St. Joseph Church and St. Benedict Parish. Faith and family were the pillars of Phil’s life.

Phil was a self-employed cattle buyer for most of his career, retiring in 2024. He and Betty built their forever home in 1969, finding great joy in household projects and yard work. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, playing catch with his kids and staying busy to ensure a beautiful yard and flower beds. He was able to make lasting memories with his children with yearly trips that included camping in state parks; ski trips to Breckenridge; boating in the Ozarks; and many other trips across the country, as well as hosting countless family gatherings over the years at his home. His kindness and thoughtfulness to others will always be remembered.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Boos; his children, Steve (Cathi) Boos, Anne (Karle) Woodward, Mike (Shari) Boos and Jeff (Megan) Boos; seven grandchildren; a brother, Ed (Barbara) Boos; sister-in-law, Donna Boos; and brother-in-law, Dr. Joseph Burke.

Phil is predeceased by his parents; an infant son, James Patrick Boos; siblings, Ray Boos, Mary (Bernie) Metz and Joanne Boos.

David Vernon Jasper, 63 of Everest died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Saturday July 18, 2026.  He was born April 2nd, 1963 in Garden City Kansas to Larry and Virginia Jasper. 

David grew up in Dighton, Kansas.  He graduated from Dighton High School with the class of 1981. He received his Master’s degree from Emporia State University. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. 

David worked as Area Director of Mosiac in Garden City for 20 years. He retired from Kanza Mental Health in 2022 following his cancer diagnosis. 

David inspired so many lives with his humble compassionate heart. He will be missed but never forgotten. 

David was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara Jasper. 

He is survived by his wife Lisa of the home.

Robert L. Kreiensieck, 90, (formerly of Robinson, KS), died July 13, 2026 at his home in St. Paul, MN.

He was born June 30, 1936 at Marysville, KS, second to the oldest of seven children born to Emil and Marie Melchers Kreiensieck. He grew up at Robinson where he graduated Robinson High School with the class of 1954. He served his country with the U.S. Navy from June 1956 until 1976 when he retired as Chief Petty Officer, serving in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. During his deployment during Vietnam, he served on air an aircraft carrier.

Upon returning from his service, Robert worked for the Minnesota State Prison from 1977 until he retired in 1994.

Robert was a member of the Hedrick-Moll Post #148, Robinson American Legion. Robert’s leisure time was spent relaxing, fishing, bowling, golf, visiting with family and friends.

He married Darlene Mae Grose, July 9, 1959. To this union two daughters were born Adrianne and Marylsann. She died February 22, 1986.

Robert married Pamela A. Lindholt, April 4, 1987. They made their home in St. Paul where she survives.

Other survivors include his daughters Adrianne and Marylsann; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren with many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his siblings Norma (Carl) Gerdes of Raleigh, NC, Duane (Nancy) Kreiensieck of Robinson, KS, Jerry (Norma) Kreiensieck of Nevada, MO, and Carol (Alvin) Rieger of Hiawatha.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, older brother Dale, younger brother James (Jimmy).

William (Bill) Herman Zibell, 94 of Holton, passed away peacefully July 19, 2026, at Homestead Senior Living of Holton.

Bill was born to Theodore Walter Zibell and Nona Hilda (Dienst) Zibell on November 19, 1931, in Holton. He graduated from Holton High School in 1949.

 Bill farmed with his father and uncle until entering the Air Force on December 5, 1951. During his military service, he completed basic training in San Antonio, Texas, then spent 18 months at the radar site in Port Austin, Michigan. From there, he traveled aboard the USS Mann to Japan before flying on to Korea, where he hauled supplies to the 38th Parallel for one year. He later returned to the United States aboard the USS O’Hara and was stationed in Del Rio, Texas, until his discharge on December 5, 1955. While serving in the Air Force, Bill wrote letters to Phyllis Tudor, the younger sister of his best friend, Ed Tudor.

Bill married Phyllis Adair Tudor on October 12, 1956, at the First Presbyterian Church in Holton. They celebrated over 68 years of marriage.

A lifelong farmer and stockman, Bill was known for his strong work ethic and steady dedication to the family’s four-generation farming operation. He and his son, Gary, farmed side by side for 47 years. Bill remained active on the farm well into his later years, raking hay for the final time at age 93. Among his favorite memories was harvesting brome seed in 2013 with his son and grandson, when all three ran combines together for the last time.

Bill was a lifelong member of Evangel Church.

He also belonged to Holton VFW Post 1367, American Legion Post 0044 for 50 years, and the Jackson County Livestock Association, where he was named Stockman of the Year.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his daughter, Carrie Hildenbrand; his parents; and his sister, Doris Jean Bradley.

Survivors include his faithful companion, Brooster, who brought him great comfort after the loss of his wife, daughter, and friends, and during his time in assisted living. He is also survived by his son, Gary Zibell (Becky), of Holton; son-in-law, Greg Hildenbrand, of Lawrence; four grandchildren, Kylie Boyd (Chris), Kurt Zibell (Shelby), Grace Demmon (Rick), and Reid Hildenbrand; and five great-grandchildren, Madyn, Jayton, Addison, Zoey, and Lily.

Leaving the farm was a difficult transition for Bill, but the staff at Homestead welcomed him with care and compassion, helping him feel a true sense of belonging. During his time there, he was blessed by a steady stream of faithful visitors whose presence brought comfort and light to a difficult season.

Bill will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.  beginning Wednesday July 22, 2026 until Friday July 24, 2026.

Linda Sue Rieschick, 75, of Soldier, Kansas, entered her heavenly home on July 15, 2026, at her home in Soldier, KS surrounded by her husband, children and siblings.

Linda was born on November 29, 1950, to Wilford "Tommy" and Dorothy (Major) Tribble. She graduated from Soldier High School in 1968. Two years later, on June 6, 1970, the Homecoming Queen of ‘68 married the Homecoming King of ‘67, LeRoy Ward Rieschick.  Together they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. LeRoy was known to comment that all those years together were spent with "never a cross word" from Linda. After receiving one of Linda's signature looks, he would quickly add, "nothing justified anyway," followed by a wink and a smile.

After high school, Linda graduated from the Clark School of Business. She was a devoted homemaker and spent several years painting and wallpapering homes. However, the work she loved most was serving the students of Jackson Heights. Linda worked for many years in the high school kitchen until all four of her children graduated, then later continued in the elementary school kitchen. To countless students, she became affectionately known as "Grandma Linda." She was famous for quietly slipping children second helpings whenever she could and brightened countless mornings with the "Joke of the Day" board, making sure no school day passed without a smile.

Linda's life was firmly rooted in her faith. One of her favorite Bible verses was Genesis 1:28: "Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth..." She lovingly interpreted that verse as, "Make lots of grandbabies," and her children enthusiastically accepted the challenge.

She was blessed with four children: David Rieschick, Brian Rieschick, Jennifer "Jenny" Horton, and Rebecca "Becky" Bauman.

David and his wife Christy blessed Linda with four granddaughters: Caitlyn (Ty) Neier, Lauren (Garrett) Lambrecht, Alexis (Harley) Wright, and Makenna (Zack) Johnson (fiancé). The grandkids, in turn, blessed Linda with great-grandchildren Scarlett and Benjamin; Lilah, Olivia, and Henry; and Elliot.

Brian balanced David's abundance of granddaughters by giving Linda three grandsons: Spencer (Lily) Rieschick, Austin (Faith) Rieschick, and Grant (Miranda) Rieschick. Together they added great-granddaughters Adelyn, Katherine, and Ivy to the ever-growing family.

Jenny and her husband Tommy welcomed three granddaughters into the family: Marissa (Shawn) Gardner, Madelynn "Maddy," and Emma. Marissa added two great-grandsons, Kacey and Callan.

Becky and husband Nathan rounded out the family with sons Taylor (Laeny) Bauman and Marcus (Trinity) Bauman (fiancé) and daughter Brooklyn (Brady) Mulroy. The Bauman’s blessed Linda with great-grandsons Ebbet and Camden and great-granddaughter Bennett "Benny Kate."

Linda's greatest joy was her family. She delighted in every grandchild and great-grandchild and never missed an opportunity to celebrate each new addition to the family tree.  As her family grew, Linda tried to never miss a sporting event or program her grandkids were in.  It wasn’t unusual to find her at 2 events in a single evening while streaming a 3rd on her phone.

Linda is survived by her beloved husband, LeRoy; her children David Rieschick, Brian Rieschick, Jennifer Horton, and Rebecca Bauman; her brother, Alan (Louella) Tribble; her older sister Jeannie Keehn; younger sister Kathy (Phil) Flesher; along with her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilford "Tommy" and Dorothy Tribble; her parents-in-law, Claude and Betty Rieschick; and her brother-in-law, Sam Keehn.

Linda's priorities in life were simple and unwavering: God, family, joy, laughter with friends, and caring for the home she loved. She faithfully served her church throughout her life, volunteering wherever she was needed. She treasured morning coffee with friends and gatherings with her classmates, conversations that usually included a friendly accounting of whose children were doing the best job of "being fruitful and multiplying."

She also loved working outdoors. Even after doctors encouraged her to slow down, Linda continued tending her flowers, garden, and yard. Her dedication can still be seen in the beautiful rock garden along the road in front of her home, built one rock at a time over multiple years. Near the end of her life, in response to doctors' counsel on taking it easy, Linda would respond,  "I only have a few more rocks to move."

Family gatherings were Linda's specialty. She planned every detail with love and often stayed up through the night preparing enough food not only for the meal but for everyone to take leftovers home. Everyone was welcome—family, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, and anyone who needed a place to belong. An unexpected guest at the family for Christmas was preceded by a last-minute trip to ensure there was another gift waiting under the tree. Those new to the family often remarked that the amount of love shown at Rieschick gatherings "might take some getting used to." Nearly every holiday ended the same way—with Linda and LeRoy dancing together while the family gathered around to watch, smiling at the love they shared.

Linda will be remembered for her unwavering faith, generous heart, witty humor, welcoming spirit, and the joy she brought to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy lives on in the family she treasured, the students she cared for, the friends she cherished, and the countless lives she touched with kindness, laughter, and love.

James G Strieby went to be with Jesus on Monday, July 13, 2026.

He was born to J Glenn Strieby and Pearl Ogg Strieby on September 30, 1935, in Appleton, WI.

He leaves behind the love of his life, Frances Strieby, wife of 68 years. His children, Michael (Donna) Strieby of California, Carrie (Dan) Sowers of Atchison, Jay (Cari) Strieby of Cummings, Jan (Curtis) Greene of Holton, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, to whom he loved with all his heart.

Jim is a Korean war veteran and served on the battleship Iowa. He was avid musician playing the clarinet and saxophone. Jim was a Pastor in Nebraska and Kansas, a social worker for Atchison SRS, ending his career at Lansing State Penitentiary as a counselor. He enjoyed being a member of the Kiwanis club. Jim was 100% faithful to whatever he chose to do, especially helping Frances to establish Atchison Child Care. He built coat cubbies, chairs, toy cabinets and storage cabinets in 1969, which are still in use today. He was the last living original ACCA board member.

Jim, affectionately known as B Dad, was a very private and helpful person. He lived for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. We all knew at any time we could call him and he would be there, no matter what, no matter where, and no matter when. Jim loved the simple things in life, walking with his beloved dog Jake by the river, throwing rocks at State Lake, camping at Tuttle Creek and Prairie Lake, or anything to be with his family. He loved coming to ACCA and playing with the toddlers and children. When asked, "How are you?" He always answered "old and grumpy".

Jim took a terrible fall on their 68th anniversary and never fully recovered. We are thankful to the Lord for his life.

Sharon Kay Crawford of Bellevue, formerly of Pawnee City, died Sunday, July 12 at the age of 83.

Wilma Louise (Judd) Williams, 98, passed away July 15, 2026, at the Apostolic Christian Home, Sabetha, KS surrounded by her loving family.

Wilma was born on October 17, 1927, in Troy, KS to Seth H. and Stella (Caton) Judd. She was a lifelong resident of Troy, retiring in 1990 after serving as Doniphan County Clerk for over 25 years.  Before working at the Courthouse, she worked at the telephone office in Troy for 17 years. September 22, 1948, she married Earl R. Williams, Jr.  He preceded her in death on March 6, 2000. She was also predeceased by her parents, infant grandson, Jay Michael Simmons, siblings, Raymond Judd and Joyce Ptomey.

Wilma lived a life of serving and doing for others.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Troy, and VFW Auxiliary, Wathena, KS. 
Wilma was also a longtime member of the Troy Christian Church. She became the "unofficial" greeter at church by welcoming everyone with a fist bump and hug. Sunday was her favorite day of the week so she could be with her church family and worship the Lord. She is anxious to give Jesus a fist bump and hug.
Wilma's hearing had been taken away, but her faith and love of people continued. Although she faced challenges--complete, loss of hearing, partial loss of sight, and a stroke, she kept her faith with her eyes on Jesus!! After Wilma's stroke, she began her residency at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha, Kansas. She's been there for a year and eight months. The Staff loved Wilma, they were so good to her, very caring, compassionate, and kind.

Debra A. Dorsey (née Schmidt), age 72, departed this world on July 13, 2026, in her hometown of St. Joseph, Missouri. Debra was born on August 26, 1953, the daughter of John and Janice (Anderson) Schmidt.

She was a proud graduate of Lafayette High School class of 1971. She married Ronald Dorsey on October 27, 1973; he preceded her in death on November 14, 2017.

Her deep sense of responsibility and selfless nature led her into a career where she could make a difference every day: working as a CNA at local nursing facilities and later as a secretary at Liberty Hospital. She enjoyed listening to her music, no matter how loud.

She is survived by her sons, Brian Lee Dorsey and Danny Dorsey; her stepson Ronnie Dorsey. Debra was a treasured sister to, John “Pete” (Linda) Schmidt, Jeff (Susan) Schmidt, Kathy Allen and Casey (Shirley) Schmidt. She is also survived by her grandchildren and her numerous nieces and nephews.

She now reunites with those who passed before her: including her father, John Schmidt; her mother, Janice Schmidt; her husband, Ronald Dorsey; and her stepson, Donnie Dorsey.

All services will be on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Lucina Christine Henry passed away at the age of 88 on July 11, 2026, at Eastridge Skilled Nursing Facility in Centralia, Kansas.

Cindy was born on February 23, 1938 at Sabetha Hospital the daughter of Joe and Mary (Brokamp) Steinlage.

Lucina (Cindy) attended Kelly School where she graduated in 1956. After high school she moved to Kansas City and worked at St. Margaret’s Hospital. While working in Kansas City she met Regis Henry who became her devoted husband on May 21, 1959 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church, Kelly, Kansas. After they were married they lived in Kansas City for two more years then moved to the family farm two and half miles east of Centralia where they started a dairy. She and Regis built a life rooted in faith, family and hard work. Due to Regis’s declining health, in 1998 they sold the cows and entered retirement. Together the two of them spent a few years working at the Knights of Columbus in Seneca, KS helping to serve meals at lunch time. When the time came for Regis to start dialysis, Cindy was his driver, his caregiver and his life line. She took care of all of his needs until Jesus called him home on April 7, 2014. Cindy continued to live at the farm taking care of Hank and her cats, the flowers and the house/farm until June of 2025 when her Alzheimer’s diagnosis began causing more confusion and memory loss. At that time, she became a resident of Eastridge Skilled Nursing Facility in Centralia, Kansas. For the past year she has gained the love and support of the other residents and all of the staff at Eastridge.

Regis and Cindy were the proud parents of seven children, all of whom are still surviving. Their children are Kevin Henry of Centralia, Chris (Erin) Henry of Seneca, Roger (Nancy) Henry of Mayetta, Vicki (Tom) Adams of Frankfort, Brian (Tracy) Henry of Alma, Keith (Dawnn) Henry of Centralia and Darrin (Kristen) Henry of Rossville. During her final months of complications with her health, she made sure all of her caregivers were aware that she had seven children and they were the reason for any diagnosis she might receive. Cindy loved her 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and spoiled them every chance she could. On her 87th birthday she enjoyed a trip to the casino with several of her grandchildren. She had the time of her life and so did her grandchildren.

Cindy was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, Mid-America Dairy Association, Kelly Baseball Association. Hobbies include trips to the casino, and watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. Werther’s Hard Candies were her favorite and she always had a stash in her pocket. She enjoyed playing board games and cards (Pinochle) with family and friends. She loved crocheting and made several afghans for family members over the years. She enjoyed word search puzzles and playing canasta and solitaire on her tablet. While at Eastridge she could be heard singing along with the Bonjour Connection band when they were there to entertain the residents.

Her faith in God and the love of His church were strong and steadfast. She will be forever remembered as the quick-witted, sassy lady who was never wrong. She loved a good joke and a silly prank. Her unforgettable laugh (cackle) will live on in the hearts of all who ever had the chance to hear it.

Cindy was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Regis, her parents (Joe and Mary Steinlage), her two sisters, Joan Ronnebaum and Ruth Richardson; her two brothers, Galen Steinlage and Emmett Steinlage.

Cindy will lie in state at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, KS.

Rosaries will be prayed on Friday, July 17, 2026 at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, Kansas. Burial will follow at St. Bede’s Catholic Cemetery in Kelly.

Harold Wayne Wilson, 79, of Atchison KS died on Sunday, July 12th, 2026, at Amberwell Atchison.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, July 16th, 2026, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Cormode officiating. Harold was born on April 15, 1947, in Atchison KS, the son of Charles Everett and Madeline Zeta (Barber) Wilson. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1965. He attended Emporia College for a year and a half. Harold worked with his brothers as a pattern maker for Wilson Pattern, Atchison from 1981-1983. He worked in the machine shop for Kitterman Plastics for 20 years, he then worked for Wenger Manufacturing Company, when he retired. He enjoyed flying model planes, riding motorcycles, working on antique cars, especially his 1932 Dodge. He was an artist doing paintings, and pictures of family. He especially enjoyed his dog, Sammy.

He was married to Mary Layton in 1968. They were later divorced. He was married to Elva Acheson on June 25, 1988. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son Donald (Rae) Wilson, Tacoma WA, a daughter Jan (Brian) Stone, Easton, MO, brothers Gary Wilson, Atchison and Robert Darrell (Rosalee) Wilson, Atlanta, GA, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A former son-in-law David Low, Effingham. His parents, brothers Lloyd L. Wilson, Charles Richard Wilson, sisters Florence, Delores, and Carol Wilson, and Zeta Gordon preceded him in death.

 

Ronald Duane Dorssom, 83, of Atchison, KS died on Wed. July 8th, 2026, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, July 17th, 2026, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Cormode officiating. Burial will follow in Lancaster Cemetery. Ronald was born on August 21, 1942, in the family home in Lancaster, KS., the son of Elmer and Evelyn (Icks) Dorssom. He worked as a warehouseman for Ford Motor Company for over 37 years. He had also been a freight truck driver and dirt track racer. He attended the Cummings Christian Church, was a member of the United Auto Workers Union. He enjoyed hunting pheasants, and camping.

Ronald was married to Sandra Hale in 1962. They were later divorced. He was married to Darlene S. Nyhart on Aug. 30, 1981. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son Dean Dorssom, Lancaster, KS, a stepson Rob Robbins, Indianapolis, IN, a stepdaughter Sheryl Robbins-Johnson, Phoenix, AZ, a brother Randy Dorssom, Lancaster, KS, three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers Don and Chuck Dorssom, and a sister Sharon Phillips preceded him in death.

Eva Nelle Cox, 95, of Halstead Kansas formerly of Everest, Kansas passed away at Homestead of Halstead on Thursday, July 2, 2026.  

Eva Nelle was born January 18, 1931 at home in rural Livingston County Missouri the daughter and only child of Clarence T. and Lula Belle Davis Lewis.  She graduated from Braymer High School, Braymer, Missouri in 1949.  She then attended Chillicothe Business College. She was proud of her perfect attendance from grade school through Business College for a total of 13 years. She was known to do math problems in her head faster than a calculator. There she met Francis “Dean” Cox and were married on December 21, 1950 . They enjoyed over 60 years of marriage before Dean’s death on May 1, 2011.  Eva Nelle was a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years serving various positions.  

She was active in the Everest community serving as the President of the Everest Chamber of Commerce.  Besides overseeing the farm, Eva Nelle worked at Rainbow Telephone Coop., the elevator in Everest, the Post Office in Horton and retired from the Everest Post Office as Postmaster. She took her job seriously; driving an open cab tractor 6 miles in a blizzard just to make sure the Post Office was open. Eva Nelle’s greatest joy was being part of her grandkids’ and great grandkids’ lives.  

She is survived by a son, Greggory Cox, daughter, Marcia Richling(Jim), 4 grandchildren Bonnie Stewart(Ian), Shelby Richling(Jaime), Derrick Richling(Heidi), Riley Richling(Michelle), and 7 great grandchildren, Tobi and Stevie Stewart, Tyson, Carter, Oliver, Paisley, and Eden Richling. 

A private family burial is planned. 

Crystal A. Potts, 83, of Effingham, KS passed away on Thursday, July 9th, 2026, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, KS surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 15th, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, KS, with Rev. Elizabeth Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Lancaster Cemetery. Crystal was born on Nov. 5th, 1942, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of Bryan and Elsie (Young) Seegel. She graduated from Avoca High School, Avoca NE, in 1960. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Peru State College, Peru, NE. Crystal taught elementary school for 33 years. For 11 years she taught in 1 room schools in Nebraska. She taught 3rd grade for USD #377 for 22 years, retiring in 2000. She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, KS. Crystal enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and playing cards.

She married Dennis Horns in 1962. He preceded her in death in 1975. She was later married to Jim Potts on December 26, 1977. He survives of the home in Effingham. Additional survivors include a daughter Denise (Jeffrey) Smith, Effingham, KS, a son Charlie (Betsey) Potts, Savannah, MO, 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Her parents, first husband, a son John Horns, her brothers Darrel and Dean Seegel, a sister Maxine Emshoff and a grandson Bryan Cummings preceded her in death.

The family will miss Crystal greatly but are secure in the knowledge that she is home with the Lord. And we are taking her long-repeated advice phrases to us that “It will get better” and “This too shall pass”.

Danny Edward Moman, 68, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Arbor Knoll in Horton, Kansas. 

He was born on December 24, 1957, in Horton, Kansas the son of Jack Eugene Moman Jr. and Judy Stirton. Danny grew up in Horton and graduated from the Olathe School of the deaf. He worked for Gaskell Machine and Metal out of high school before going to work in the automotive maintenance department for the Kansas Department of Transportation in Horton, Kansas where he worked until he retired. 

Danny was known by everyone in Horton and at the Hiawatha Walmart. He was avid KU fan, enjoyed going to Kiss and other rock concerts, taking cousins along. His family always called him Big D. 

Survivors include his mother, Judy Holub of Wamego, Kansas, two brothers, Ron Moman of Wamego, Kansas and Randy Moman of Weatherford, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Danny was preceded in death by his father, Jack E. Moman, his paternal grandparents, Jack B. and Edna Moman and his maternal grandparents, Frank and Josephine Stirton, and a brother, Doug Moman. 

Graveside services are planned for 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the Horton City Cemetery.

Gerald Kuker, 66, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 9, 2026 at Omaha, NE. He was born July 28, 1959 at Falls City to Norman and Maxine (Berg) Kuker

He married Betty (Feighner) Henry on November 4, 2017 at Barada, NE

Gerald was raised in the Barada area and graduated from Falls City High School in 1977. Following graduation, he worked various jobs and helped on the family farm until becoming employed by the Richardson County Department of Roads in 1990. He worked there until retiring in 2022 and then worked at Dollar Fresh until his health failed. He was a member of Barada Global Methodist Church and a long-time foster parent.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Betty of Falls City, children, Desiree McQueen and her husband Brandon of Hiawatha, KS, Cassandra Gaddis and special friend Joe of Topeka, KS, Shelby Kuker of Falls City, Eli and his wife Shelby of Falls City, step-children, Tom Lundsford and his wife Mary of Falls City, Alicia Henry and special friend Brandon of Falls City, brother, Rich and his wife Fran of Shubert, NE, sister, Pam Dungan and special friend George Dunlap of Falls City, twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Harris Cemetery with Pastor Mike Hader officiating.

Nelda Karen Melvin, 87, of Soldier, KS, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at her grandson’s home in Onaga. She was born April 21, 1939 in Corning, KS, the daughter of Leland Lyle and Donna Audrey (Clem) Steele.

Nelda graduated from Corning High School in 1957. She was a lifelong farm wife, a cook for Onaga Community Hospital for many years and later helped care for patients at their home.

She was a member of Corning Trinity United Methodist Church and the YL Club of Soldier and Corning.

Nelda was a devoted wife, mother and grandma. She enjoyed watching her hummingbirds, cardinals, fishing and cooking for her family.

 Nelda married Lyle Henry Melvin on February 9, 1958 in Corning, KS. They celebrated over 68 years of marriage.

To this union, their son, Kenneth Lyle Melvin was born; he preceded them in death on October 8, 2023. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Leland and Donna Steele and infant great-granddaughter, Timberlee Faye Melvin on June 23, 2026.

Survivors include her 3 grandsons, Steven Lyle Melvin (Cammie) of Randolph, KS, Jeremy Lee Melvin (Emily) of Soldier, KS and Brendan Lane Melvin (Bailey Baker) of Topeka, KS; 4 great-grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth, Henry Dean, Jackson Lyle and Hayslee Jane Melvin; daughter-in-law, Denise L. Melvin of Onaga, KS and sister, Norma Baxter of Holton. KS.

Mary Lou Luker, 89, of Holton, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026.

Mary was born on September 12, 1936, in Bronson,  Kansas, to Charlotte Opal (Bray) Smith and Artie Smith. She was raised alongside her brothers, William and Richard Smith, and her sister, Wanda (Smith) Larson.

On May 8, 1955, Mary married the love of her life, Kenneth Luker. Together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family. They shared 53 wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with three children: Tracy Luker (Beth), Sandra Luker, and Kathy Brady-Maxwell (Paul). It brings comfort to know that Mary is now reunited with her beloved Kenneth.

Mary worked for Southwestern Bell, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. Beyond her career, she was an exceptional homemaker whose greatest joy was caring for her family. She had many talents and enjoyed bowling in a league, sewing, crocheting beautiful blankets, and baking delicious treats for those she loved.

To her family, Mary was the heart of every celebration. She made holidays magical, creating traditions that will be cherished for generations. Birthdays were especially important to her, and every child and grandchild knew they could count on one of Grandma's homemade birthday cakes, baked with love just for them. Her home was always a place of warmth, comfort, laughter, and unconditional love.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth Luker; her parents, Charlotte Opal and Artie Smith; her brothers, William Smith and Richard Smith; her sister, Wanda Larson; and her granddaughter, Alicia Marie Priest.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Tracy Luker (Beth), Sandra Luker, and Kathy Brady-Maxwell (Paul); her nine grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchild; along with many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were blessed by her kindness and love.

Mary's legacy is one of selfless love, quiet strength, generosity, and faith. She leaves behind a family forever shaped by her example and countless precious memories that will continue to bring comfort and joy.

Paul Benitz, 87, of Falls City, NE, passed away July 6, 2026 at Falls City. He was born March 26, 1939 at Wathena, KS to Ernest and Leona (Benningfield) Benitz.
He married Glenda (Zoucha) Fisher on February 24, 1970 at Falls City. She passed away January 22, 2003.
Paul served in the Kansas National Guard at Hiawatha.
Paul was raised in northeast Kansas and graduated from Highland High School in 1957. Following graduation, he started farming on the family farm with his father. When married the couple established their home in Rulo and he continued farming and farmed his entire life. Paul was a lover of dogs. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Nebraska Soybean Board and served on the Richardson County Rural Water District.
Paul is survived by a daughter, Paula Kaslon and her husband Curtis of Lincoln, step-daughter, Terri Fisher and her husband Gary Navis, step-son-in-law, Joe Dougherty both of Scottsdale, AZ, grandchildren, Shelley Huppert and her husband Korey, Jim and Mike Rhian, great-grandchildren, Kamdyn and Kreighton Huppert, special friend, Ruth Groothuis of Auburn. He was preceded in death his parents, wife, sister, Virginia Jeffers and her husband Bob, step-children, Mike Fisher and Phyllis Fisher
Mr. Benitz has been cremated and a graveside service will be held on Monday, October 5, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Steele Cemetery with Pastor Ken Humphrey officiating. Military graveside honors by Falls City Ceremonial Honor Guard.

 Linda Lea (Walters) Domann, 78, of rural Winchester area, died Thursday, July 2, 2026 at her son’s home, surrounded by family.

Linda was born September 30, 1947 at Marysville, KS, the daughter of Elmer and Doris Walters. She was a graduate of Beattie High School in 1965 in Beattie, KS. After graduating, she moved and worked in Lincoln, NE for two years.

She was united in marriage to (Raymond) Dean Domann on April 20, 1968 at St. Gregory’s Church in Marysville, KS. Linda and Dean have lived in the Winchester community for 58 years making a living farming together. Dean survives at their home.

Survivors include one daughter, Natalie (Bryon) Wilson of Ellsworth KS; three sons, Blaine (Christy) Domann of Leavenworth, KS, Brad Domann of Beloit, KS, and Brent (Kim) Domann of Centralia, KS; Eleven grandchildren, Weston (Megan) Wilson, Shane (Kaitlyn) Wilson, Sydney (Carson) Windholz, Hannah (Lane) Schrag, Nick Domann, Cole (Ashley) Domann, Emily (James) Domann, Carlee Domann, Kassie Domann, Hailie (Carson) Domann, Allison Domann and ten great grandchildren; Kent, Dottie, Laura, Eliza and Wayde Wilson, Klein and Kenna Wilson, Josie Windholz, Raegan Schrag and Paisley Domann-Rice.

She was preceded in death by parents, Elmer and Doris Walters, brother, Galen Walters and grandson, Michael Joshua Domann.

Arnold “Arnie” Leslie Streit III, 80, of Sabetha, Kansas, and formerly of Bern, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Arnie was born on November 15, 1945, in Seneca, Kansas, to Arnold and Lola (Sherrard) Streit, and was their eldest son. He attended school in Oneida, Kansas, and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1963.

On December 13, 1968, Arnie married Christie E. Flies, and they shared 57 years of marriage. Arnie worked as a mechanic throughout most of his life. He was passionate about cars and enjoyed racing. He also enjoyed playing cards and sharing stories.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters-in-law, Judy Streit, Denise Streit, Lynda Hogan, and Carla Flies; and his brothers-in-law, Roy Flies and Bill Flies.

Arnie is survived by his wife, Christie of Sabetha; his four younger brothers, Bill Streit of Bellevue, Nebraska, Herb Streit of Holton, Kansas, Mike (Dawn) Streit of Topeka, Kansas, and Bob (Lucretia) Streit of Sabetha; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; his brother-in-law, Dave (Pat) Flies; and his three sisters-in-law, Dona (LeRoy) Going, Rosie Flies, and Elaine Flies.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Sabetha Methodist Church in Sabetha. Jean E. Steele, 94, of Fairview, Kansas, and formerly of Morrill, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Life Care Center of Seneca in Seneca, Kansas.

Jean was born on November 8, 1931, in Falls City, Nebraska, to Orville and Elizabeth (Buchholz) Thompson. She graduated from Fairview High School in 1949.

Following her graduation, she attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence and Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, and earned her teaching certificate. Jean taught at Fairview schools until her marriage to Dale Steele. On April 27, 1951, Dale and Jean were married at the Church of the Brethren parsonage in Sabetha, and four children were born to this union. Jean was a dedicated servant of God and, in 1951, was baptized and became a member of the Church of the Brethren in Sabetha.

After their marriage, Jean and Dale farmed and raised livestock in the Morrill, Kansas area. In 1975, Dale was involved in a hay baling accident that resulted in the loss of both arms, which changed the family’s life completely. Despite this, Dale and Jean continued their agricultural work. Dale adapted by learning to use a prosthesis to drive and operate machinery, and care for livestock, a process that was only possible with Jean’s support.

Throughout her lifetime, Jean remained a devoted Jayhawk fan. Jean enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; her two brothers, Kenneth and Allen Thompson; her nephew, Greg Thompson; her niece, Susan Thompson; and her sister, Isabel (Thompson) Rogers.

Jean is survived by her children, David Steele of St. Mary’s, Kansas, Cheryl (Dave) Mishler of Sabetha, Joyce Ruhnke of Fairview, and Dalene (Randy) Smith of Everest, Kansas; her five grandchildren; and her eight great-grandchildren.

A private family service and interment will be held at the Morrill Cemetery in Morrill, Kansas. Frances M. Williamson, passed away at age 88, on July 3, 2026, at her home surrounded by the love and care of her family. She was born to parents Edward Handke and Emma M. (Speer) Handke on May 31, 1938, in Oak Mills, KS. She began her education at the District #74 School until eight grade and is a 1955 graduate of Atchison County Community High School.

Frances married George Kramer on July 4, 1956, and they began building their life on the farm welcoming five children. George passed on April 11, 1977. She later married Robert Williamson on November 26, 1983, and shared sixteen years with him until his passing on July 31, 1999.

She served as a bus driver for USD 377 for 24 years until she chased her true passion of horticulture or as she described it, playing in the dirt. Frances worked for a few garden centers and wrapped up her employment years at Leupold’s.

Frances’ life was filled with many things that brought her joy. She loved visits from her family, especially enjoying their many holiday traditions. Even as her family grew to more than 50 members, she still took special care to make sure each one had Christmas gifts under her tree. She was lovingly called Grandma Frannie by her grandkids and many others by extension. Anyone who knew her can agree that Frances had many special talents, including decorating her home for the holidays, creating custom wreaths and beautiful bows, and working with flowers. Outside of her family and hobbies, she enjoyed playing dominoes with friends and taking trips to the casino.

Frances is survived by her children Becky (Dan) Hawk, Kathy (Larry) Scott, Jackie Nolan, Ed (Melissa) Kramer, Lisa (David) Swendson; her brother Robert Handke; as well as 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James Handke; sisters, Erma Bolick, Adella Handke, June (John) Kautz; and sister-in-law Frances Handke.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Frances’s life with a visitation on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 8th at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Bob Flack as officiant. She will be laid to rest at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Atchison County Community Schools Education Foundation, St. Croix Hospice or Atchison Humane Society in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. 

Ryan Keith Berkhalter, fondly known as “Hambone,” passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2026, with the love of his family at his side. He was the beloved son of Randle Keith Berkhalter and Stephanie Allison (Birch) Berkhalter, born in Atchison, Kansas, on September 28, 2009.

Ryan’s smile and laughter brought warmth into every room he entered. Even as a little one, Ryan was remarkably gifted; at just one year old, he discovered how to navigate the iPad, amazing everyone with his quick mind and innate feel for technology. This early curiosity only grew, and soon there was no device Ryan couldn’t master. His resourcefulness was legendary among family and friends—Ryan always seemed to find a way to get exactly what he wanted, and he knew it, too. As the youngest, he carried the playful conviction that he was the favorite, deserving of all the best life offered and that he ought to be Da Boss.

He poured his heart into the things that made him happiest. His love for video games was his passion. Whether lost in the worlds of his favorite games or shooting hoops on the basketball court, Ryan thrived in moments of joy and play. Food was another delight—especially pizza, which he appreciated most when left alone with it. His family soon learned never to put onions or pickles on his burgers—he knew exactly what he liked.

Ryan shared a special bond with his grandma Carla, whom he charmingly persuaded to link her credit card to his gaming accounts—a family story that led to the term “V-Bucks” echoing through their cherished relationship. Through these little victories, Ryan showed his family the fullness of his cleverness of his personality, which will be remembered fondly for years to come.

He was deeply treasured by all who loved him. Ryan is survived by his parents, Randle Keith Berkhalter and Stephanie Allison Berkhalter; and his sister, Rayne Kierra Berkhalter. His great-grandmother, Mildred Birch, continues his legacy of love, as do his grandmothers, Carla Vaughn, Ora Berkhalter, Gloria Davis, and his grandfather, Tony Ross. His surviving aunts and uncles include, Delbert (Marilyn) Berkhalter, Vicki Birch, Tammy (Warren) Houston, Sharon Tidwell, Dionne Berkhalter, Gary Birch, Dawn Finney Downing, Courtney "CoCo" Haley, Dale "Mazio" Birch, Adam (Tracy) Birch, Jeremiah (Ashleih) Berkhalter, Michelle Birch, Joshua Berkhalter and numerous cousins.

Ryan’s memory is also cherished alongside those beloved family members who passed before him: his grandfather’s George Berkhalter and Jake Vaughn, his grandmother Delores Downing, his aunt, Rogena Richards, and uncles Glenn Downing and Matthew "Chic" Downing.

Though Ryan’s time with us was heartbreakingly brief, the brilliance of his spirit left indelible marks on the hearts of everyone who knew him. His intelligence, wit, and fierce sense of self shone through in every moment—a precious reminder to savor joy, embrace curiosity, and love shamelessly.

Marvin "Craig" Snyder, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri. Born on April 12, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas, Craig lived a life marked by resilience, hard work, and a deep commitment to those he loved.

Craig’s early years were shaped by his upbringing in Salina and Wichita, where he graduated from Wichita Southeast High School before attending Wichita State University. A proud Eagle Scout, he shared a love of the outdoors fostered during his many years in the Boy Scouts alongside his twin brother. Their experiences camping and hiking, including memorable visits to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, were treasured parts of his youth. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Christian Church in Wichita. In 1981, Craig and his brother experienced a severe vehicle accident that left both fortunate to survive. Craig’s courage in helping save his brother was a testament to his unwavering devotion to family. Despite enduring many health challenges following the accident, Craig faced each battle with strength and determination.

Throughout his career, Craig demonstrated a strong work ethic. He began in maintenance with Koch Industries in Wichita, later moving to Atchison to work at Rockwell. His journey then took him to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he contributed to Meads and Bluesides. Returning to Wichita, he was employed by Boeing and later a machine shop before settling back in Atchison. There, he dedicated many years to Lawless Lawn Mower Repair, where his skills and commitment were highly valued.

Beyond his work life, Craig was known for his warm and welcoming spirit. He loved hosting gatherings to watch football games, with a particular fondness for the Kansas City Chiefs, and spent many Sundays enjoying the thrill of NASCAR races. He was known for his famous family recipe meatballs and banana bread, often having a full freezer of bananas to be prepared. His caring nature extended deeply to his family, always eager to hear about new births and milestones from those he loved. 

Craig is remembered with affection by his many cousins and friends—whom he regarded as brothers and sisters—who enriched his life and shared in his joys and struggles. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ralph E. Snyder and Anna Rosalee "Sis" Snyder-Downing, and his beloved twin brother, Ellis E. Snyder.

Family and friends are invited to a Graveside Service and Inurnment on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 12:30 PM at Sugar Creek Cemetery in Rushville, followed by a meal and fellowship at the Sugar Creek Ladies Aid Hall. Cremation care has been provided by the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.

Bonnie Jean (Kelley) Aberle, 88, of Sabetha, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Bonnie was born on April 16, 1938, in Omaha, Nebraska, the oldest daughter of Berthal Kelley and Emma “Pauline” (Torkelson) Kelley. She attended public schools in Falls City, Nebraska, and graduated with the class of 1956. After finishing school, she moved to Omaha and started working at Mutual of Omaha. While living in Omaha, one of her favorite stories to tell and one of her favorite memories was attending an Elvis Presley concert with her girlfriends.

Bonnie married the love of her life, Eldon Aberle, on June 12, 1960. In 1979, they acquired the Ford dealership from McFall Motors, and 47 years later, Aberle Ford remains a family business.

Bonnie enjoyed socializing, playing Bridge, and being in the Red Hat Society.  She was a member of the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha.  She was a passionate traveler, entertainer, and lover of a clean home.  She found joy in exploring new places, hosting friends and family, and whistling happily while dusting her home, always creating a warm, welcoming environment wherever she went.  She was a constant presence at her grandchildren’s sporting events, cheering them on with love.  She was known for her zest for life and bright spirit. Although dementia affected her ability to communicate in her later years, those who loved her never forgot the lively spirit that defined her. She is now at peace, reunited with her beloved husband, Eldon, whom she deeply missed over the years.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eldon, on April 24, 2002, and her son, Mike, on October 20, 2020. 

Bonnie is survived by her son, Scott (Laura) of Sabetha; her daughter-in-law, Kelly of Boca Raton, Florida; her four grandchildren, Anna (Roy) Stafford of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Brett (Alyson) Aberle of Sabetha, Chad Aberle of Lawrence, Kansas, and Lindsey (Mitch) Aberle-Swanson of Gretna, Nebraska; two great-grandchildren, Benny Michael Aberle and Lane Cody Aberle; her brother, Ron (Nancy) Kelley of Falls City, Nebraska; her two sisters, Sandy (John) Nore of Mesa, Arizona and Jane (Steve) Minikus of Altamonte Springs, Florida; her many nieces and nephews; and her dearly, devoted friend, Barbara Agee.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the NorthRidge Church in Sabetha. Prior to the funeral service, a visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be made in the Albany Cemetery, north of Sabetha. Joyce Ann Hayes Broxterman, 79, of Baileyville, Kansas, passed away on July 3, 2026, with her family by her side, holding her hand.

Joyce was born on November 19, 1946, at home in Lillis, Kansas, to Malachy and Imogene (Hazlett) Hayes, the eighth of fourteen children. She grew up in the Lillis community, attending Lillis Grade School through eighth grade before graduating from Wheaton High School with the Class of 1964. After high school, she worked at First National Bank in Kansas City, Missouri.

On January 28, 1967, Joyce married Patrick Broxterman at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lillis. They began their married life in Topeka, where Joyce worked at Capitol Federal Savings. Later, they moved to Garden City before settling in Baileyville, where they raised their family together.

Being a wife, mother, and grandmother was Joyce's greatest joy. Along the way, she babysat area children and her own grandchildren, worked at the Baileyville Bar, cooked for B & B School, made candles for Wanda's Candles, and cleaned Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. No matter the job, caring for others was always at the heart of what she did.

Joyce was a faithful Catholic with a deep devotion to Our Lady, the Rosary, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. She loved music, especially Elvis, and was often one of the first on the dance floor at family weddings. She was an avid reader with shelves full of books, especially those about her faith and health. She had a legendary sweet tooth and was known for enjoying a sampler of desserts at family gatherings. Her grandchildren fondly remember ice cream for breakfast, popsicles whenever they wanted, and all the little ways Grandma made being together fun.

More than anything, Joyce loved her family. She celebrated every birthday, wedding, holiday, and milestone as though it were her own. Her gentle hands, kind heart, quiet generosity, and accepting spirit made everyone feel loved. She taught her family, by example, that being together was life's greatest blessing.

She leaves behind many who will deeply miss her and cherish her memory. Her devoted husband of 59 years, Pat; their eight children: Deb (Andy) Price of Manhattan, Kim (Kerry) Bramhall of Vermillion, Shawn (Kelly) Broxterman of Topeka, Matt (Cindy) Broxterman of Topeka, Stacie (Phillip) Buessing of Axtell, Shelli Broxterman (Amos Payne) of Topeka, Aiden (Coraly) Broxterman of Chicago, and Shane Broxterman (Chris Riha) of San Diego. Her children consider themselves incredibly blessed to have had the best mom they could have asked for.

She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, each of whom knew they were deeply loved, thoroughly spoiled, and always welcomed. They will carry with them the lesson she lived every day—that family comes first.

Holding her memory dear are her four brothers: Cecil (Linda) Hayes of Shawnee Mission, Frank Hayes of Platte City, Missouri, Tom (Mary) Hayes of Shell Knob, Missouri, and Ron (Patty) Hayes of Sunrise Beach, Missouri; three sisters: Carolyn (Tom) Brady of Shawnee Mission, Nancy Sixta of Platte City, Missouri, and Janet Bailey of Platte City, Missouri; and her brother-in-law, Maurice Keating of Shawnee, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

She is now rejoicing with those who she preceded in death, her parents; three brothers, Big Pat Hayes, Little Pat Hayes, and an infant brother; and three sisters, Delphina Colvin, Ada Keating, and Ann Hayes.

Joyce's family will remember her for the love she gave so freely, the laughter she shared, the hugs that made everything better, and the example she set of quiet faith and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed, but her love will continue to live on in the family she cherished.

A rosary will be prayed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville on Monday, July 6, 2026 at 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Nancy Kay McClain, 81, of Horton, Kansas, went home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her beloved family on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

Nancy had courageously battled several chronic illnesses for many years. She was born on January 11, 1945, in Horton, Kansas the daughter of Roy E. and Hazel Pearl (Banning) Hill. Nancy graduated from Horton High School in 1963 and then went to the St. Lukes School of Nursing. She worked in the healthcare field in various areas of nursing at the Hiawatha Infirmary, Hiawatha Hospital and 40 years at the Horton Hospital. She was dedicated to taking care of others.

On January 3, 1965, she married John McClain at the First Baptist Church in Horton, Kansas. Nancy dearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. "She loved having family gatherings and cooking for them and was known for her potato salad and homemade white cake. Nancy was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. In recent years she enjoyed having breakfast at the Everest Cafe and the Dinnerbell Cafe in Wetmore.

She is survived by the love of her life for 61 years, John McClain of the home, her children, Scott (Sara) McClain of Manhattan, Kansas, Sherri (Jeff) Oxley of Rantoul, Kansas, Travis McClain of Hiawatha, Kansas, Shelly (Tim) Buser of Horton, Kansas. Grandchildren, Login (Kyle), Emma, Connor, Landon, Mitchell, Noah, Calyssa, and Katy. Great Grandchildren, Kayden and Asher.

She was preceded in death by parents, son, John Mark McClain and a granddaughter, Abbie Lea McClain.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at the First Baptist Church in Horton, Kansas. Tighe Gilkerson, 51, of Salem, NE, passed away July 3, 2026 at Salem. He was born July 29, 1974 at Falls City to Dick Gilkerson and Peg Watton.

Tighe was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School in 1993. Following graduation, he worked various places until becoming employed by the BNSF Railroad in 2012 working in maintenance in way.

Tighe is survived by his wife, Barb of Salem, children, Abby Gilkerson of Lincoln, NE, Emily Gilkerson of Falls City, Trey Gilkerson and his fiancé Jordyn Curtis of Falls City, mother, Peg Watton of Hermitage, MO, father, Dick and his wife Judy of Falls City, Siblings, Todd and his wife Jean of Cross Timbers, MO, Jill Elting and her husband Mike of Lincoln, Tedd and his wife Becky of Falls City, Adam and his wife Sam of Hemingford, NE. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Donald (Don) Edward Harvey, 80, of Bern, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
Don was born on November 3, 1945, in Nortonville, Kansas, to Edgar and Mildred (Kline) Harvey.  At a young age, Don was trained as a blacksmith by his father, which led him into a career in welding and building machine parts of all kinds.  On March 5, 1967, Don married Donna Blunt in Hiawatha, Kansas, and they shared 59 ½ years of marriage and were blessed with four children.  
Don’s welding and machine-building skills enabled him to secure positions at both Brockhoff Manufacturing and Wenger Manufacturing in Sabetha, Kansas.  He worked at Wenger Manufacturing for 35 years before retiring.  Don was also well known for his participation in the annual Albany Days celebration, where he worked at the Albany Sawmill and demonstrated its operation to patrons for the past 41 years.  
Don’s other hobbies included fishing, restoring tractors, and generally being outdoors.  However, when he had to be cooped up in the house, he was often found watching his favorite television show, Gunsmoke.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Harvey; his granddaughter, Tylar Blankship; and his two sisters, Kay Harvey and Doris Feek.
Don is survived by his wife, Donna, at their home in Bern; his daughter, Peggy Harvey of Bern; his two sons, Paul (Pam) Harvey of Sabetha, and Scott (Bridget) Harvey of Fairview, Kansas; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Janet Reid of Carbondale, Kansas and Lois Kanaly of Hiawatha, Kansas; and his brother, Richard Harvey of Emporia, Kansas.

Mary Lois Evans Kibler, 102, passed away Friday, in Highland, Kansas.

Mary (or Mary Lois in her younger years) was born on April 28, 1924 in Converse, Missouri to James and Frances (Creamer) Evans. She attended a one room schoolhouse and sometimes rode her horse to school. She graduated from Lathrop High School in 1941 and Park College in 1946. She enjoyed all of her education and valued education and lifelong learning.

Following her senior year, she accompanied her roommate home to the territory of Alaska. She ran the Metlakatla post office during her summer there. This was the beginning of her love of travel. She visited all 50 states and traveled to 5 continents.

In the fall of 1946, she moved to Troy Kansas to begin her teaching career as the home economics teacher at Troy High School. In Troy she met Robert Larson Kibler whom she married in June of 1949. After living in Miami and Nemaha Counties, the couple moved to Hiawatha for 34 years. In Hiawatha, she was an active member of Sorosis and of the First Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.

In 1989, Mary and Bob returned to Troy, KS where she lived for 37 years.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, brother Dale Evans, sister Eunice Kirk, brother-in-law David Kirk and son-in-law William Sciortino. She is survived by daughters Susan Staley (Ronny), Amy Sciortino, and Caroline Kibler (Calan Thurow); nephews Bob Aufenkamp, Dale, and Bryce Kirk; grandchildren Byron Anderson (Mary), Sam Anderson (Haylie), Emily Unger (Bobby) and Madeline Sciortino (Clay Schaeffer) and great grandchildren Gracie, Bronson, Colt, Sammie and Brylee.

Lucille M. Coder, 91, of Effingham, KS died on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Homestead Assisted Living, Atchison, KS.

Lucille was born on Feb. 7th, 1935, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Lawrence and Iona (Delzeit) Chain. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1951. She worked as executive assistant at Farmers and Merchant State Bank in Effingham/Exchange Bank for 35 years before retiring.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Effingham, KS, where she served as an officer for many years on the Altar Society, and was a member of the Choir, Welcoming Committee and Parish Center Coordinator. Lucille was active in her community, serving on the Effingham City Pool Committee, and as Winsome Dozen Bunko Club Coordinator. She attended and was active in supporting the Town & Country Senior Citizens Center. Lucille enjoyed quilting, yard work, gardening, raising flowers, and especially attending family activities and vacations.

She was married to Lyle D. Brown in Feb. 1953. Mr. Brown preceded her in death in Feb. 1965. She was later married to Otto Earl Coder on April 15, 1968, at St. Ann's Church in Effingham. Mr. Coder preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1993.

Survivors include sons Darrell W. Brown, Effingham, KS, Duane L. (Lisa) Coder, Effingham, KS, and stepson Gary D. (Mary Ann) Coder, West Branson, MO; three daughters Darla K. (David) Lanter, Effingham, KS, Brenda S. (Roger) Depenbusch, Cheney, KS, and Lori A. Jacobs, Cheney, KS; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; a sister LuAnne Frost, Effingham, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, and one sister, Leita Mae Coder.

Todd Alan Just, 64, of Pawnee City, Nebraska, was born on February 28, 1962, in Manhattan, Kansas to M.L. “Jerry” and Susie (Bell) Just.  In 1963, he was baptized in New Cambria, Kansas and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Pawnee City, Nebraska in 1976.  In 2025, Todd completed a confession of faith and became a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Shawnee, Kansas.

Todd graduated from Pawnee City Public High School in the class of 1980.  Growing up he enjoyed all things outdoors.  He especially loved boating, and water & snow skiing with family and friends.  His love of outdoors carried over into his work, starting on the end of a shovel for LJ Webb of Geneva, Nebraska.  Todd became a supervisor within a year, running his own crew.  Later in life, Todd worked for O’Donnell and Sons of Kansas City as a large equipment supervisor.  During his time at O’Donnell’s, Todd supervised 19 different projects at once.  The largest of those projects being the “new” Cabela’s retail site in northwest Kansas City.  He loved what he did and took immense pride in the quality of his work.

Todd passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in Falls City, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of sixty-four years, three months, twenty days. He is preceded in death by his dad Dr. ML Just, nephew/Godson Phillip Doerr, uncle/Godfather Eddie Bell, and many other aunts, uncles, and several friends- all whom welcome him into his Father’s Eternal Home.

Todd is survived by his mom Susie Just of Pawnee City, NE; special friend Susan Horton and “That Damn Cat” of Overland Park, KS; his sister Tracy Doerr and husband Doc of Falls City, NE; nephews/Godsons: Justin Doerr of Phoenix, AZ; Peyton Doerr (Kaylee and Ila Mae Jeralds) of Falls City, NE; aunt/Godmother Dixie Bell and Aunt Carole Batts, and several cousins and many friends.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Pawnee City Cemetery in Pawnee City, Nebraska, with his cousin Chris Bell officiating.

Laddie L. Helms, age 64 of Auburn, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn.

She is survived by her husband Rick of Auburn; daughters Courtney DeBuhr (Josh Nincehelser) of Dawson, Kolby (Gavyn) Thomas of Auburn; son Scott (Trish) Helms of Auburn; grandchildren Ashton Nincehelser and Cody and Brenden Helms; brother Gene Behrends; sisters Karen Behrends, Lois Behrends, Shelley Behrends, and Linda Arquette; other relatives and many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 10, 11:00 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 5:00 to 7:00.

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Barron Stringfellow, who passed away peacefully at his home in Hiawatha, KS on June 30, 2026, at the age of 66.
Born on April 10, 1960, Barron discovered his life’s passion at the remarkable age of seven when he began performing magic. What started as a childhood fascination became a lifelong calling. For nearly six decades, he brought wonder, laughter, and amazement to countless audiences through his talent, creativity, and love for the art of illusion. Throughout his life, he was an active member of numerous magic clubs and organizations, where he formed lasting friendships and inspired fellow magicians of all ages.
With his legacy beginning in Las Vegas, he also became involved with law enforcement and gaming. He had a way of combining the three to become an “Entertrainer” specializing in compliance in casinos, and providing training to thousands of casino employees around the World.
While he was known for the impossible feats he performed on stage, those who knew him best understood that his greatest magic was the kindness, generosity, and love he shared with others. He had a unique gift for making people feel welcome, seen, and valued. His home and heart were always open, earning him not only the love of his family but also the affection of more “adopted children” than anyone could ever count. To many, he was a mentor, a father figure, and a lifelong friend.
Above all else, he cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and an adoring Gradda whose eyes lit up whenever he was with his grandchildren. He leaves behind the love of his life, Athena Stringfellow; Siblings- Jennifer Drabek, Tina (John) Moore, Donna Carle, Johnny (Sally) Carle, and Charlie (Merrie) Carle, his daughters, Dante Royal, Jennifer Sage (Chris) Provo, Marriah (Kyle) Walsh; his sons, Jon Royal, Richard Oswalt and Christopher Oswalt, as well as his nieces and nephews who were his children as well- Coty Pogue, Kiri Pogue, Casandria Pogue, Joshua (Brittany) Fraidenburg, and Kylara (Dan) Doughty, and his beloved grandchildren, Rebecca, Jonathan, Jared, Tori, Jaxson, Blake, Alexandria, Zoe, Penelope, Sky, Emerson, Annalina, Alex, Maddie, Izzy, Coty Jr, Lillian, Elizabeth, Annalena, Tucker, Spencer, Hazen, Ellie, Eli, Casstiell, Ruvik, and Dorian- as well as two great grandchildren, Clementine and Lincoln, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He also leaves behind an extended family of friends and chosen children whose lives were forever changed by his love, guidance, and generosity.
He was Preceeded in death by his mother, Marjorie Berman (Stringfellow), beloved Father-in-Law (Dad) Richard H. Carle Jr., Sister, Diane Choen, and brother, Michael Stringfellow. 
Although the curtain has closed on his final performance, the wonder he created and the lives he touched will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy is not only found in the magic he performed but in the joy he spread, the lessons he taught, and the family he built—both by birth and by choice.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and never forgotten.
A celebration of his life is planned for July 17th, 2026 in Robinson.

June Eileen Long, 87, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the Heritage Grove Estates in Topeka, Kansas. 

June was born June 23, 1939, in Atchison County near Valley Falls, Kansas, the daughter of George Elvin and Marguerite Pearl (Gontz) Flory.

 She worked for the State of Kansas for 43 years in several departments; Clerk for the Department of Revenue; Highway Department known now as the K-DOT and in the Treasurer’s Office.

 June married Paul Wenston Long on June 20, 1958 in Valley Falls, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2022. They shared the blessing of five children.

 She is survived by her children, Cindy Long of Lyndon, KS, Sandy Ard and Jerry Long both of Topeka, KS; her sister, Ruth Prather of Mission, TX; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great granddaughters.

  June is preceded in death by her parents; her sons, Alan and David Long; her brothers, Ronald and Donald Flory and her granddaughter, Danielle Romesburg.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2026 at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls, KS with burial to follow at Coal Creek Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Joan Elizabeth (Pelster) Dreier, 66, of Humboldt, Nebraska, was born on November 17, 1959, at the Dalton Hospital, in Dalton, Nebraska to Eugene and Catherine (Lauby) Pelster. She attended K-12 school in Dalton and was very active in music, volleyball, basketball and track. She continues to hold the high jump and shot-put record at Dalton High School. The entire family was extremely involved in 4-H where Joan sewed, baked, gardened, and raised sheep and cattle. She was very interested in sheep production and started her own Suffolk flock while in college. She sold her lambs to local 4-H members so they could have some quality lambs to show. Her love of sheep lead her to collect sheep figurines throughout her life. Joan also loved following her brothers around in all their Cub Scout and Boy Scout activities and dreamed of becoming a Boy Scout.

After graduation in 1978, Joan enrolled in Kearney State College with a volleyball scholarship. There, she was active in the Residence Hall Association and was the leader for her co-ed intermural team, “The Fool Family” where she made a lot of friends and met the love of her life, Donald Dreier. During the summers during college, Joan worked for the Cheyenne County Extension Office in Sidney, Nebraska as a 4-H aide and enjoyed her job greatly. After four and a half years of college, she graduated in December 1982 with a degree in 7-12 Business Education and K-12 Physical Education with a coaching endorsement. Joan accepted a teaching position in January 1983 in Ainsworth, Nebraska where she taught business classes and was the Future Business Leaders of America advisor for four and a half years.

On June 4, 1983, Joan was united in marriage with Donald Eugene Dreier from Hendley, Nebraska. They spent the summer in a tiny apartment in Dalton and then moved to Ainsworth, Nebraska. During the school year, they lived in Ainsworth and lived with Joan’s parents during the summer so Joan could help with the Pelster family farm while Don worked at the Co-op Fertilizer Plant in Sidney, Nebraska. Joan loved to drive the tractor and combine wheat and was her father’s right-hand man. While at Ainsworth, Joan completed her vocational endorsement at Chadron State College. In May of 1987, Don decided he wanted to return to college and get his degree in physical education and social sciences so off to Kearney they went. Don attended college and Joan worked during the week on the family farm in Dalton and came back to Kearney on the weekends. During the winter months, she substitute taught at Kearney High School and Kearney Catholic High School, was a temporary worker at Baldwin Filters and inbound telemarketer for Cabela's. Joan did a long-term substitute teaching job at Kearney Catholic for the business teacher who was killed in a car wreck and also a long term sub at Gibbon High School. In 1990, Don student taught at Hay Springs, Nebraska while Joan taught business and coached volleyball and basketball at Chadron High school. Don graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in December 1990 and substitute taught in Chadron and Hay Springs for a while until he returned to Joan’s parent’s home and again worked for the Co-op Fertilizer plant in Sidney. During the fall and winter of 1991, Joan and Don helped Joan’s parents prepare for a farm sale as they retired from farming.

In August 1991, Joan and Don moved to Humboldt, Nebraska where Joan became the business teacher and Don an assistant football coach. On June 30, 1992, Cody Arend Dreier joined their family and on December 22, 1997, Brandon Eugene Dreier made their family complete. Joan continued to teach business while Don did many odd jobs, substitute taught, coached several sports, taught driver’s education, GED classes and STOP class. He became a paraprofessional at HTRS and loved his job. Unfortunately, on January 27, 2009, Don passed away from complications of pneumonia.

Through the boy’s school years, Joan and Don followed them from game to game and supported their activities. Joan became the Committee Chairperson for Cub Scout Pack 387 and eventually achieved her life-long dream of becoming a Boy Scout when she first became an assistant scoutmaster and finally the scoutmaster for Troop 387 in Humboldt. She very much enjoyed the outdoor activities and loved camping with the boys and was blessed to have many active parents and assistant scoutmasters. Cody became an Eagle Scout in 2010, and Brandon earned his Eagle Scout in 2015. Throughout Joan’s tenure in Boy Scouts, she was proud to have helped 23 young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Joan opened her home to Cassandra (Peace) Forman in 2015. She lived with Joan until her high school graduation in 2017. Cassy is now in the Army, is married to Angelo Forman who is also in the Army and considers Humboldt her home. They have a beautiful daughter, Ciara, and a new baby on the way. Cassy is presently an SSG Staff Sergeant and is stationed in Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Joan passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of sixty-six years, seven months, twelve days.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Eugene Dreier; parents, Eugene and Catherine (Lauby) Pelster; sister, Jane Pelster-Rosen; father-in-law Albert Dreier; step-father-in-law, Ivan Shafer; sister-in-law, Judy Pelster, and brothers-in law Patrick Dreier and Larry Arganbright.

Survivors include her son Cody, his wife Jessica (Albin) Dreier and granddaughters, Chloe and Olivia and grandsons Lewis and Phillip Dreier of Lincoln, NE; son Brandon Dreier of Humboldt, NE; brother Dennis Pelster of Longmont, CO; brother Michael (Bonnie) Pelster of Scottsbluff, NE; foster sister Shirley (Robert) Richards of Leander, TX; mother-in-law Donna Shafer of Arapahoe, NE; brother-in-law Mike Dreier of Hendley, NE; sister-in-law Sharon Arganbright of Omaha, NE; and sister-in-law JoAnn (Nick) Becker of Beaver City, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Steinauer, Nebraska with Father Bernard Kimminau officiating.  Burial will immediately follow mass at the Humboldt Cemetery in Humboldt, Nebraska.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street in Humboldt, Nebraska.  Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.
