Edward B. Gilpin, 96, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at the Wathena Health Care Center.
Ed was born on February 4, 1921 in Saxton, Missouri to parents, Charles S.Gilpin and Beatrice (Lower) Gilpin. Ed was from a family of 15 children and lived on a farm. He graduated from Pickett High School, St. Joseph, Missouri and married the love of his life, Dorothy (Stigers) Gilpin in 1940. They moved to Baltimore, Maryland where Ed attended an Aeronautical School and worked at the Glen Martin Airport.
In 1943 Ed was drafted into the U.S. Navy during WWII, and set sail on the USS Saidor at which time he moved his family back to St. Joseph, Missouri to live with Dorothy’s parents. He was discharged in 1945 to return to his family and moved back to Baltimore.
In 1948 Ed and (wife) Dorothy purchased the Wathena Chicken Hatchery and moved their family of six children to live in Wathena. He was in the hatchery business from 1948-1961, Wathena City Marshall and retired from Swafford Reality Company, where he worked with his nephew, Mark Gilpin.
Ed was a member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 161 in Wathena, Kansas. He was a member of the Moila Shrine Temple in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he was Past Commander of Legion of Honor. Ed never knew a stranger.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, his parents, grandson, Todd Gilpin and a great-granddaughter, Malorie Adkins.
Ed is survived by his son, Donald Gilpin of Corona, California;
Daughters, Margie Twidwell of Topeka, Kansas;
Carol Moddelmog of Fort Collins, Colorado;
Edna Cherry of Albany, Missouri;
Joanne McVey of Wathena, Kansas;
Joyce Bottiger of Lenexa, Kansas;
11 grandchildren and 26great-grandchildren and numerous great-great- grandchildren;
Sisters, Mary Grayce Shaneck and Myrt Dunn;
Brother, James Gilpin;
Numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 27, 2017,
at the First Baptist Church in Wathena, Kansas.
Visitation: 5-7 Sunday evening at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena, Kansas.
Friends may call after 9 A.M. Sunday.
Burial: Bellemont Cemetery where there will be military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 161 and Masonic Committal Service.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shriners Children Hospital, Wathena Healthcare Activities Fund or the Wathena EMS.

Gerald Elvet "Jerry" Alkire, 99, or Sam to his family, passed away Monday, February 20th, 2017, in Hiawatha Kansas.
Jerry was born at home to Timothy L. and Linnie (McBride) Alkire on December 4th, 1917. He went to be with his Lord and wife Jimmie on February 20th, 2017 He was the last of his siblings which included Virgil, Arnold, Timothy, Bessie (Neil), Goldie (Lance), and Doris (Roach).
Jerry spent his early years in Barnard Missouri, graduating from Maryville High School. After graduating, Jerry entered the Army Air Corps in 1942, later the Air Force, from which he proudly served his country with honor thru WW II and for the next 21 years. He met and later married Jimmie Keith on June 28, 1953. While in the military, he and Jimmie enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East, as well as being stationed in Morocco and Libya for a number of years.
Upon returning to the United States, Jerry retired from the Air Force in California in September 1960, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. It was in California where their daughter JheriKeith was born in October 1960, after which they moved to Hiawatha, Kansas in September 1961, where Jerry accepted the position of hospital administrator. Jerry remained at Hiawatha Hospital for the next 21 years, retiring in September 1981.
Jerry was active in his church and Kiwanis. He loved gardening, his roses, golfing and fishing trips with friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Jimmie Keith. He is survived by his daughter Dr. JheriKeith Alkire, son-in-law Alan Davis, and the love of his life, Jack, as well as many nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
A Celebration of Jerry’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, with Rev. Wayne Castle and Rev. Jacob Cloud officiating.
The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard, Veterans Honor Flight, or Brown County Humane Society, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha, KS 66434.

Bradley James “Brad” Wenzl, 39, of Atchison KS died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 12, 2017 with his brother Derek and his wife Abby by his side.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Friday, February 17th, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Church. Burial will follow in the St. Ann’s Cemetery, Effingham, KS. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm on Thursday, February 16th, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:30 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Wenzl Children’s Education Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.
Brad was born on March 7, 1977 in Atchison KS the son of Dennis and Brenda (Whaley) Wenzl. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School, Effingham, KS in 1995. He attended Beloit Technical Community College and Cloud County Community College. Brad owned and operated Wenzl Construction starting in 1999. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church, Effingham, KS. He was active in the Atchison High School Booster Club for his children, and enjoyed boating, camping with their Camp A-holics, spending fun time with his family and friends. He sponsored race cars, was a Kansas City Royals, and Dallas Cowboys fan. Brad loved working for his customers and had many friends who he threw darts with, vacationed with, and had many fun times with.
He was married to the love of his life and best friend Abby Theurer on May 14, 2011. Abby survives of the home. Additional survivors include his son Parker (Wenzl) of the home, daughter, Payton (Wenzl) of the home. His parents, Dennis and Brenda Wenzl, Effingham, KS, brother Derek (Lesley) Wenzl, Cummings, KS, maternal grandfather Bob Whaley, Effingham, KS, and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins as well as a number of friends. His paternal grandparents, Lawrence & Marcella Wenzl, and maternal grandmother, Doris Whaley preceded him in death.

Ann Haverkamp, 88, of Corning passed away on February 5th, 2017 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital, Seneca, KS.
She was born on April 3, 1928 on the family farm Northwest of Frankfort, the daughter of Joseph H and Mary Rottinghaus Lierz. She attended Allison Rural School completing the 8th grade. After school, she continued working on the family farm. At the age of 17 she moved to Seneca to care for her Aunt and Uncle and worked in Seneca at Mealy Hy-klas and doing a other ewvariety of jobs.
On September 20, 1949, she married the love of her life, Cletus Haverkamp at Annunciation Church at Frankfort. They celebrated many wonderful anniversaries and were blessed with 67 years of marriage.
They made their home on a farm south of Corning for forty-eight years. In 1997, they built a new home and moved into Corning. She enjoyed volunteering at St Patrick’s Church, baking, gardening and working in her flowerbed. She was a faithful wife, loving mother and devoted homemaker. She gave of her time to her children giving them the gift of her strong faith in the Lord. She was an amazing example of devotion to her family and to her Christian faith. She also blessed her family with unconditional love and especially loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren who brought her much joy. She is survived by 24 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren and is expecting 3 additional great-grandchildren this year.
Ann was a member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church and St Patricks’ Alta Society devoting more than 25 years to washing and ironing altar linens, server gowns, and cleaning and preparing the altar for weekly mass. She also served as President and Officer of the Altar Society. For many years, Cletus and Ann prayed together at an hour of adoration each week.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her family who watched over and loved her dearly. Mary Ann (Harold) Brokamp of Corning, Dorothy (Harry) Taylor of Corning, Cleta Haverkamp of Corning, Monica (Mike) Shaughnessy of Silver Lake, Gary (Diane) Haverkamp of Corning, Vernon (Sue) Haverkamp of Corning, Galen Haverkamp of Topeka and Sharon Haverkamp of Corning; daughter-in-law Connie Haverkamp of Silver Lake; a sister, Rosanna Haverkamp of Goff.
Ann was preceded in death by a son Daniel E Haverkamp on June 28, 2014; five brothers, Henry, Cyril, Joseph, Raphael and Alvin; and three sisters, Gertrude Wilmot and Genevieve Lierz and Mary Christy.
Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Wednesday, February 8, at St. Patrick’s Church at Corning. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Tuesday, February 7, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for St. Patrick’s Building Fundy, and sent in care of the family.
