Donna Lee (Schuetz) Hallauer, 89, of Horton, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2024 at Vintage Park, Hiawatha, a place she had called home since December. Donna was born July 18, 1934 in Brown County, the daughter of Roy and Helen (Scheid) Schuetz. Donna grew up in Horton and was a 1952 graduate of Horton High School.

Donna married Allen Hallauer at Miami, Oklahoma on December 13, 1973. Allen preceded her in death on October 25, 2016.

Donna worked many years as the office manager for the Horton office of the Kansas Department of Transportation. After retirement, she was active in volunteering in a number of organizations, including the Horton Chamber of Commerce and the Horton Alumni Association. She organized tours for several years during alumni weekend for returning alumni. Donna spent many hours researching the Horton Headlight archives to create a written history of Horton businesses throughout the years. She made presentations of her findings to groups or anyone else that requested it. In later years, Donna became actively involved with the Horton Senior Citizens enjoying their weekly morning coffee and lunches. Donna attended St. Leos Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Society.

Donna enjoyed her outings and friendships with the girls. Going out for breakfast or lunch, taking a scenic ride through the countryside or taking a bus trip to the city to take in a play, Donna was all in and enjoyed these times immensely. During this last year, she enjoyed the companionship of new friends she made at Vintage Park. She also enjoyed their bus rides, especially when they went for ice cream.

Donna is survived by her brother, Robert (Sue) Schuetz of Centerville, Ohio. Two nieces, Wanda (Steve) Stoltenberg and family of Olathe, Kansas, Beth (John) Ewing of Fairborn, Ohio and one nephew, Dan (Janice) Ruth and family of Jane, Missouri. She is also survived by the extended Hallauer family, including her niece, Lynda Ross and brother in law Virgil Hallauer.

Funeral services for Donna Hallauer will be Wednesday, June 5th at St Leo- Catholic Church. Visitation will be at 10am with a mass to follow at 10:30am. Burial will be at St Leo's Catholic Cemetery with a meal afterwards at the church hall. As Donna was a big booster of doing as much as possible locally, memorial donations in her name are suggested to the South Brown County Community Foundation and sent in care of the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary.

Lisa Marie Phillips, 64, of Atchison, Kansas died May 30, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family.

Lisa was born March 23, 1960, in Norfolk, Virginia, the daughter of Larry & Jean (Jewelsburg) Phillips. She served four years in the Navy and then served in the reserves. She worked at Valley Hope in Atchison, KS, and later served as a Chaplin for the facility. She was able to touch thousands of lives during her career. She had a very active life, embroidery, traveling, fishing, stained glass, crafts, collecting rocks, rose garden, dogs, cats, and was a member of AA for thirty-nine years. At one point she worked as an over the road truck driver. She had a special room in her home called the “Room Full of Good Intentions”. Lisa had a wonderful personality and was able to make friends with anyone she came into contact with.

Survivors include her companion, Pam Goodman, father, Larry (Glenrose) Phillips, Fullerton, Neb. brother, Bruce (Laurie) Phillips, Neiley, Neb., sisters, Linda (Walter) Brock and Jennel Steel, both of Fullerton, Neb. She is preceded by her mother Jean Phillips, her godson, Tanner Wolfe.

William “Bill” Woods, Sr., 76, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 28, 2024 at Falls City. He was born November 7, 1947 at Lloyd, KY to Leonard and Florence (Sullivan) Woods.

He married Sheala Stepp on November 25, 1966 at Wise, VA.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army on August 1, 1967 at Ashland, KY. He was a helicopter mechanic serving in Vietnam. He earned a National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, NCO Professional Develop Ribbon, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Sharp Shooter Badge, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, 7 Good Conduct Medals. He was honorably discharged and retired January 1, 1990 at Ft Eustis, VA.

Bill was raised in Greenup County, KY and graduated McKell High School in 1965. Following his retirement from active duty, he moved to Falls City where he worked at the Farmer- Coop and he worked there until it closed and then he took employment in Auburn. He then moved to Florida and worked for British Petroleum for 12 years and then moved back to Falls City in 2011 where he worked part time at Kwik Shop. He enjoyed fishing. He was a member of Valley Avenue Baptist Church.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sheala Woods of Falls City, son, William “Woody” Woods, Jr. and his wife Tina of Escondido, CA, daughters, Rana Frenzel and her husband Jeff and Sara Delp and her significant other, Michael “Rose” Turner both of Falls City, brother David Michael Woods of Grayson, KY, sisters, Mary Evelyn Medley of Greenup, KY, Edith Fallowfield of Elgin, IL, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Wesley Woods, Sister Margaret, and a grandchild, Kendal Delp.

His memorial service will be Monday, June 3, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at the Valley Avenue Baptist Church with Pastor Chad Berry officiating. Inurnment will be in Steele Cemetery.

Dean Roscoe Teter, 76, of Circleville, KS passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 27, 1947 in Holton, KS, the son of Jay Roscoe & Aileen D. (Albright) Teter.

Dean graduated from Circleville High School in 1965. He attended college at Emporia State University, and he served in the United States Army discharging in 1972. Dean- passion was farming which he did most all his life. He also worked for General Foods for 10 years, and then Jeffery Energy Center as an Electrician for 19 years.

He married Theresa Rutherford on June 30, 1967 in Netawaka, KS. They celebrated nearly 57 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa of the home; 2 daughters, Michelle Reed (Chuck) of Topeka, KS, and Janelle Eisenbarth (Aaron) of Holton, KS; a son, Mike Teter (Courtney) of Circleville, KS; 14 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren with 2 on-the-way.

Dean is preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Aileen Teter, and two brothers, Billy Joe and Bob Ray Teter.

Elaine Elizabeth Bentsen, 80, of Seneca, died on Sunday, May 26, 2024 at the Life Care Center in Seneca.

Elaine grew up in the Seneca area and attended the Seneca Public School; graduating in 1961. As a young woman, she worked Kampert Drug Store on Main in Seneca before being employed by Nemaha Valey Community Hospital in Seneca for 48 years.

In her retirement she enjoyed all the reading she never had time to do. She took time to travel and have a flower garden. She also volunteered at the Sts. Peter and Paul Mission Center when time allowed.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and the St. Ann's Altar Society both of Seneca.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, John on July 11, 2000 and Leona on December 20, 1951 and a brother, John Leon Bentsen on August 10, 1948.

She is survived by a brother, Gerald Bentsen of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; a sister, Patricia "Peg" Bentsen of Seneca; a step-brother, Allan Kramer of Leavenworth, KS; a step-sister, Kathy Warren of Lincoln, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Thursday, May 30, 2024 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Friday, May 31, 2024 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Inurnment in the church cemetery.

Richard J. “Grandpa” Cornelison, 94, of Topeka / Meriden, died Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at home.

He was born October 15, 1929 in the Bloomfield Community in Jefferson County the son of Wilbert Richard and Anna Jeanette Crowley Cornelison.

He attended first through eighth grades at the Unity Schools and was a 1946 graduate of Rock Creek High School. Working many jobs before the 1951 flood, he worked hauling milk from farmers into Topeka and driving a truck for John Morrell in Topeka. Rich started work at the Goodyear Tire Co. in Topeka, retiring in 1984 after 33 years. He served as Truck Driver for Jerry Taliferro Trucking in Holton from 1984 to 2000. He then started Circle C Farm and Trucking from 1992 to 2008. “Grandpa” Rich enjoyed his trucks, tractors and his Brahma Cattle.

He married Lois Jean Petrie on October 8, 1949, they divorced in 1988. Survivors include his partner, whom he called his wife, Judy Ann “Jude” Schrick Cody, of the home, one son, Larry Cornelison, Sr, Meriden, Three daughters, Debbie Miller, Meriden, Diana Cornelison, Topeka, Darla (Tim) Dooley, Meriden, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Keith Cornelison, a great-grandson, Dakota Cornelison, two brothers, William Cornelison and Jerry Cornelison.

Darrell Schulenberg, 67, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 27, 2024 at Falls City. He was born December 27, 1956 at Falls City to Jesse and Luella (Arnold) Schulenberg.

He married Roxanne Sailors in August of 1977 and the later divorced. He then married Karla (Laverentz) Parker on February 14, 1991 and divorced on September 26, 2008.

He served in the National Guards with Company B in Falls City.

Darrell was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City in 1975. Following graduation, he worked at Pizza Hut and then moved to Hawthorne, NV where he worked at casinos. He returned to Falls City where he worked in pork production and then became a welder for Airlanco. He started working for the BNSF Railroad in track maintenance until he had to retire due to his health in 2012. He enjoyed fishing and baseball. He was a member of St. Paul- Evangelical Lutheran Church at 20th and Towle St.

Darrell is survived by his children, Jared of Clairmont, OK, Jessica Williams and her husband Kenneth of Hamilton, MO, Bryton and his wife Katherine of Macon, GA, step-children, Brandon Parker of Courtland, NE, Karman Buhr of Weeki Wachee, FL, brother, Wayne of Hawthorne, NV, sisters, Donna Bentley of Falls City, Joan Mosiman of Lincoln, NE, Susan Schulenberg of Plainville, NC, Kay Johnson and her husband Mitch of Banner Elk, NC, fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son in infancy, and a sister, Doris Jean Louthan.

Jerry Crofford, 87, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 25, 2024 at Falls City. He was born April 23, 1937 at Falls City to Kenneth and Helen (Stednitz) Crofford.

He married Wanda Casey on August 23, 1958 at Falls City, she passed away September 30, 2003.

Jerry was raised in Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School in 1955. Following graduation he worked for the Falls City Meat Company until 1977 when he began working for American Family Insurance as a local insurance agent in Falls City. He retired in 2005. He enjoyed attending Nebraska football games and was a huge fan. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Jerry is survived by his sons, Robert and William both of Falls City, son-in-law, Keith Speers of Kansas City, MO, brothers, Roger of Falls City and Terry and his wife Cathy of DuBois, WY, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Kerry Speers, sister, Barbara Killingsworth and a brother, Dennie Crofford.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Falls City Catholic Cemetery with Father Jim Meysenburg officiating.

To know Mary Searcey was to understand humanity. She was a guiding light to many and a pillar of strength for her family. One of the qualities that defined Mary was her unwavering kindness.

Born Mary Wynona Moslander on September 7, 1945, to James and Lois (Barber) Moslander near Vesta, Nebraska, she grew up with six sisters and one brother. Later in life, she met Francis Searcey, the love of her life, and they married and raised a family of their own, very similar to hers, with six girls and one boy.

Her children were her pride and joy, and she was the epitome of a family matriarch. Yet, her influence extended far beyond her immediate family. Mary was a motherly figure to many, guiding them with compassion and inspiring countless individuals to chase their dreams. Many friends considered her a “mom” or a “grandma” and addressed her as such.

Mary had unwavering optimism. Even in the face of tough challenges, and she had many, she remained resilient, finding light in the darkest of moments. She was a pillar of strength and encouragement for us all.

Her other true love in life was Elvis Presley, whom she honored by watching his old movies, playing his music endlessly, and collecting memorabilia. When you looked into Mary- piercing baby blue eyes, it was easy to see that she was smitten with the King of Rock & Roll and would go to any length to honor him.

Many might remember Mary- fantastic cooking and baking. She was so talented in the kitchen. All of the kids got the chance to enjoy the mouth-watering cinnamon rolls she would often bake early in the morning before school. Sundays, for dinner after church, she would have enough fried chicken to feed an army, and frequently, the house was always open for friends and neighbors who were most likely considered family anyway.

As a young woman, Mary went to beauty school in Lincoln, where she learned to cut, curl, perm, and style hair. Throughout her years, she cut and styled hair for many people out of her home. She also loved dancing, and she and Frank would often make trips to surrounding towns’ dance halls. She reminisced about these times, and her face lit up as she spoke of the memories.

Most recently, her greatest joy came from grandchildren and great-grandchildren with whom she spent time until the end of her life. The presence or even the thought of any one of her grandbabies made her smile from ear to ear and her eyes sparkle.

Our beautiful mother, who was a friend to so many, a sister, a daughter, a wife, a grandmother, passed from this earth Saturday, May 25, 2024 to be with Jesus, and Jamie Sue for all of eternity, along with her many loved ones who passed before her.

If you knew Nonie, you know what a great honor it was to have that deep loving connection with her soul and magnanimous spirit. She would welcome you into her heart without asking for anything in return other than respect. Let us carry forward Mary Searcey- legacy by embracing virtue, benevolence, and graciousness in our own lives. Though Mary may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us always and forever.

John S. Patton, 75, Atchison, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Mosaic Healthcare in St. Joseph, MO after a brief Illness.

John was born October 22, 1948 in Horton, KS and is the son of John F. “Jack” and Helen Wessling Patton Rushville, MO. and graduated DeKalb High School in 1967. After high school, John worked as a traveling salesman, selling home stereo equipment for Webb Electronics, and later opened his own stereo and CB radio store and repair shop called Patton Electronics in Winthrop, MO. He also worked briefly at the local Ford dealership, Atchison Cablevision, Commercial Vending and Depot Motors, all in Atchison before beginning his career as Instrumentation and Electrical Maintenance at MGP Ingredients in 1980, where he worked for 28 years. He then worked at Lifeline Foods and Seaboard Foods in St Joseph, MO. before retiring in 2022. He was a member of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, local 74D and a 50yr member of the Elks Lodge in Atchison. In his spare time, John enjoyed horseback riding, electrical tinkering and watching old black and white westerns.

Survivors include three daughters, Tonya (James) White, Mandy Miranda and Megin (Timothy) Green and their mother, Linda Patton, all of Atchison, two step daughters, Gail Hansen, Florida, and Dana Obermeyer, Platte City, MO, twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Additional survivors include three half-brothers Steve (Linda) Burnsides. Jerry Burnsides, Kenny Burnsides, and one half-sister Sharlene (Dave) Sollazzo and three nieces and two nephews all of Council Bluffs, IA.

His parents, wife Judy and son John “Jay” Patton preceded him in his death.

Denette A. McGehee, 66, of Mayetta, formerly of Prairie Village, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the Anew Healthcare Nursing Home in Holton.

She was born January 6, 1958 at Holton, the daughter of Donald and Dolores Feldkamp Holthaus. She graduated from Royal Valley High School in 1976.

Denette was very active with Elks Lodge No. 26, and the Auxiliary to that lodge, the Does Drove No. 74. She loved to cook, make floral arrangements, and to decorate for parties and other gatherings. She was usually the organizer for all the family gatherings.

She and Bobby Joe McGehee were married for forty-four years. He survives, of the home.

Denette and her husband did over the road trucking. They later were owner operators of Woodside Lawn and Maintenance, and had the contract for the Maintenance Department for the entire city of Mission Hills.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three step-daughters, Vivian Wing, Rosa Schwab and Geneva McGehee, and a brother, LeRoy Holthaus.

Other survivors include four step-sons, William McGehee, Missouri City, MO, Bobby Joe McGehee, Jr., Kansas City, MO, Richard Sparrow, in Washington State and Nelson Sparrow, in Arkansas, a step-daughter, Robin McGehee, Lawrence, her siblings, Donna Johnson (Robert), Kenny Holthaus (Kaye) and Doug Holthaus, all of Mayetta, and Farrell Holthaus, Hoyt, sixteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Richard J. Vondemkamp, 93, of Seneca, died on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Life Care Center of Seneca.

Richard was born on January 20, 1931 to Charles and Amelia Hutfles Vondemkamp. He grew up in Kelly area and attended Kelly Grade School and St. Bede- High School, graduating in 1949.

As a young man, he helped his father on the family farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952. He served during the Korean War and was stationed on the U.S.S. Constitution and was discharged at the rank of Hospitalman Third Class USN-1, on December 16, 1954.

On April 17, 1956, Richard married Mary Ann Robke at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. They were married for 65 years; before her death. They lived and farmed southeast of Centralia for 40 years; before he retired to Seneca in 1996.

Rich was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church. He was a member of the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Earl W. Taylor Post #21.

Rich was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann on September 11, 2021; his parents, Charles on July 31, 1980 and Amelia on December 18, 1989; his son-in- law, Robert Lada; and brothers, Tom and Leland.

He is survived by his sons, Mike Vondemkamp of St. Joseph, Missouri and Tim (Bernadett) Vondemkamp of Argyle, Texas and two daughters, Linda Lada of Wamego and Diane (Curt) Carlisle of Joplin, Missouri; a sister, Mary Jo Selph of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He is survived by his sons, Mike Vondemkamp of St. Joseph, Missouri and Tim (Bernadett) Vondemkamp of Argyle, Texas and two daughters, Linda Lada of Wamego and Diane (Curt) Carlisle of Joplin, Missouri; a sister, Mary Jo Selph of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Carol Niehues, 69, of Sabetha, Kansas, died on Thursday, May 23, 2024, surrounded by family and friends, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Carol was born on October 3, 1954, in Seneca, Kansas, the daughter of Jacob C. Krotzinger and Eva I. (Luginbill) Krotzinger. She graduated from Nemaha Valley High School in 1972. During high school, Carol worked at Bob's Sirloin Room in Seneca. As a young girl, Carol enjoyed friends, family, and music, and she was in the school band and choir as well as the church choir.

After high school, Carol started LPN school in Manhattan, Kansas. Then, she lived in Topeka, Kansas, where she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for Stormont Vail Hospital. After returning to Seneca, Carol worked at the hospital in Seneca. Carol met and fell in love with Michael R. Niehues, and they were married on July 15, 1978. They resided in Seneca where they managed a local restaurant, The Huddle. After the birth of their two sons, Jacob and Brian, the family moved to Sabetha.

While living in Sabetha, Carol worked as a CNA and Dietary Aide at the Apostolic Christian Home. She also worked as a Dietary Aide at the Apostolic Christian Retirement Village with her good friend, Sheri Lay. Carol loved and had a passion for working with the elderly and those patients with Alzheimer- disease. In 2006, Carol- family moved to Baldwin City, Kansas where she worked as a Dietary Aide for Vintage Park. In Baldwin City, Carol was a member of the Church of Christ. In 2007, after the death of her husband, Michael, Carol moved back to Sabetha where she remained until her death. Carol was a member of the Sabetha Church of Christ.

Carol loved to cook and bake and she shared these talents with others. She especially loved baking for Christmas and making Christmas plates for family and friends, which was a family tradition that she learned as a child. Carol also enjoyed her local sports teams, especially the Royals, and she rarely missed watching a Royals game. Most of all, Carol loved her family and her friends. Her early morning coffee at Buzz Café with her best friend, Debbie Painter, and the “Coffee Gals” was always special to her. Carol always wanted to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren, and she talked with each of them every day.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Michael, on July 9, 2007; her three brothers, Lyle, Charles, and Jimmy Krotzinger; and her dear friend, Diana Mitchell, whom she considered a sister.

Carol is survived by her son, Jake Niehues of Sabetha and his three sons, Jacob, Jack and Jonah; her son, Brian Niehues of Sabetha and his two sons, Nathan and Jonathon, and his daughter, Eva; her daughter, Hannah (Dustin) Dettwyler of Sabetha and their son, Jase, and daughter, Harper; her daughter, Katherine (Anthony) Enneking of Sabetha and their unborn son who is due in November; her two sisters, Diane Hermesch of Sabetha and Marcia Krotzinger of Seneca; her nieces and nephews; and her many friends.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Sabetha Church of Christ in Sabetha. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sabetha Church of Christ. The interment will be made in the Albany Cemetery, north of Sabetha. Sister Agnes Helgenberger, OSB, 90, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kan., died Monday, May 20, 2024, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Friday, May 24, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel; and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Saturday, May 25 at 9:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 5001 NE Cookingham Dr., Kansas City, Mo.

Sister Agnes was born in Kolonia, Pohnpei, Micronesia, on April 5, 1934, the first of five children. In the matriarchal culture there, Sister Agnes was born to be “limese kedil” (matriarch of the clan). Instead, she followed God's call to become a Mercedarian Missionary of Berriz in 1953 and taught for 30 years in Micronesia and Guam. She came to the United States in 1968 to earn her B.S. at St. Mary's College in Leavenworth.

During a sabbatical in 1989, while living in the Mercedarian community in Liberty, Mo., she began to pray the Divine Office with the nearby Benedictine Sisters. She subsequently entered Queen of the Angels Monastery and made her lifetime vows in 1996. During her years in Liberty, she served in their thrift store and food pantry, was a substitute teacher at Liberty High School, taught bible school, and ministered in prison. She loved teaching, especially the students with more challenging needs. Sister Agnes was elected prioress in 2007. When the Liberty monastery closed in 2018, she asked to become a member of Mount St. Scholastica, transferring her profession in March of 2020. Faithful to prayer and generous in service, she brought joy to both sisters and staff in Dooley Center. She also remained a highly respected, beloved and central member of the Micronesian community in the Kansas City area.

Sister Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Martha (Wilson) Helgenberger, her brothers, Aluis, Domingo, and Cyril Helgenberger, and her sister, Cypriana Mendiola. She is survived by nieces and nephews and her monastic family.

Donna was born on October 7, 1937, in Clay Center, Kansas, the daughter of William A. and Katherine M. (Magers) Miller. She lived with her family in Broughton, Kansas until 1943, when they moved to Atchison, Kansas. In 1956, she graduated from Atchison High School in Atchison, Kansas. She married Donald A. Noll on February 2, 1960 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Atchison, Kansas.

Donna was a woman who loved her flower garden, and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds that would come visit in the backyard. She was a member of the Corpus Christi Altar Society and a parishioner at the Corpus Christi Church at Mooney Creek, Kansas. Donna, in her later life, worked at F.W. Huston Medical Center in Winchester, Kansas as a dietary aide. In her quiet time, she was an avid reader of romance novels, and enjoyed getting her hair done every Friday.

Donna is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Rob) Stutzman, Wichita, Kansas, Kristine (John) Morettini, Meadville, Pennsylvania, three sons, Kevin Noll and Tim Noll, both of Winchester, Kansas, Wayne Noll (Allison), Oskaloosa, Kansas and two grandchildren, Kaitlyn Morettini and Kyle Stutzman. All of those she deeply loved and cared for.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents and husband, sister, Dorothy Weixeldorfer and brother, William “Bill” Miller. All of whom will be welcoming her home.

Phillip J. Wingender, Jr., 55, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024 at the Stormont-Vail Health Center in Topeka.

He was born June 16, 1968, at Leavenworth, the son of Phillip J. Wingender, Sr. and JoAnn Perry Wingender. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Midway in the Gulf War, and was a member of the V.F.W.

Phil had worked in different manufacturing jobs and was also a truck driver, mostly for the U.S. Postal Service.

He married Crystal Dover. To this union a son Alex was born. They were divorced.

Phil was preceded in death by his father, a sister, Cynthia J. Wingender, and a niece, Taylor J. Pettitt.

Survivors include his son, Alex Wingender, his mother, JoAnn Wingender, a brother, Michael Wingender (Jennifer), a sister, Barbara Parker (Ed), and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Christopher Harold Schuster, 95, of rural Elk Creek, NE, died peacefully with his family at home on May 17, 2024. He was the eleventh of twelve children born on a farm north of St. Mary, NE to the Walczyk-Schuster family on January 15, 1929. Chris was baptized and confirmed at the St. Mary- Catholic Church. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1947, then continued his education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for agricultural science. Chris then worked as a bulldozer operator in Sterling, NE for Boeve Construction. In 1949, Chris was inducted into the US Army. In 1951, Chris began active service in the army as an Engineer Equipment Repairman. Chris served in active duty until 1953, then transferred to reserves until 1958. On April 21, 1956, he was united in marriage to Janie Day at the St. Mary- Catholic Church in St. Mary, Nebraska. To this union four children were born, Kristi, Kirk, Kendall, and Dana.

Chris began his farming career near Princeton, NE and then purchased the farm at Elk Creek, NE where he and Janie raised their family. Chris raised cattle, hogs, chickens and more. He also enjoyed planting and harvesting crops, being outside, and simply just running his farm equipment. Chris also worked at the Johnson Motor Company. He served on the Elk Creek School Board of Education for many years. Chris always enjoyed going on big camping trips with the family and his long-time army buddy Paul Graff and family. He enjoyed fishing and teaching his children how to fish. Chris loved to tease/joke around with his children and grandchildren every chance he could.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and homemaker; her grace and zest for life will be missed.

John Joseph Heuertz, 84, of Valley Falls, KS passed away Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Midland Hospice in Topeka, KS. He was born November 9, 1939, in Valley Falls, KS the son of Benedict Alois and Clara Lousie (Seifner) Heuertz.

John graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1957. After high school, John served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1965.

On June 4, 1966, John was united in marriage to Margaret Elaine Hosler at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. They shared over 51 years of marriage before Margaret passed away on April 17, 2017.

He was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Meriden since 1978 when it was built. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. John not only attended St. Aloysius Catholic Church, but he also took a lot of pride in taking care of the church's maintenance and cleaning.

John was a jack of all trades. In his early years, he worked for Valley Implement as a mechanic. He also worked for Heinen Repair Service in Valley Falls. John was mostly known for his thirty plus years of owning and operating his own business, J & M Appliance in Valley Falls. John could always be found tinkering on something, trying either to fix something or just to make things better. He enjoyed fixing and working on International Scouts, caring for his cattle and most of all, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Benedict & Clara; his wife Margaret; son James Joseph Heuertz; 3 sisters, Mary Cummings, Louise Wynkoop and Catherine Abrams; brother, Edward Heuertz.

Jerry Keith Lindstrom was born February 6, 1966, in Oakland, Nebraska to Vincent and LaRita Lindstrom. He passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2024, in Hiawatha, Kansas. He was baptized, confirmed, and married in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland. He attended rural country school Pleasant Way District #62, Craig, Nebraska, and graduated from Oakland-Craig High School in 1984. Jerry graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1989.

Jerry was united in marriage to Kathy Larson on August 15, 1987. To this union four children were born: Gustaf, Alexandria, Madelyn, and Clara.

Jerry served on the church councils at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning, Nebraska, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Falls City, Nebraska, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He worked for many years in the agriculture and manufacturing industry and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He found genuine joy in coaching and watching his children in their many sports throughout the years; a joy that carried into his grandchildren. Jerry was a passionate supporter of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but most importantly, enjoyed spending his time surrounded by his family and being “Papa” to his four beautiful grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Vincent and LaRita Lindstrom, father-in-law Larry Larson, sister Joan Wolf, and brother-in-law Terry Larson.

Diana Marie Fate, 57, of Holton, KS went to her heavenly home Friday, May 17, 2024 at her home with her family by her side.

Diana was born March 30, 1967 in Elko, NV, the daughter of Homer Samuel and Ellen Josephine (Barber) Nixon. She lived in Elko until 1979. She graduated from Belleville High School in 1985 and received her Bachelors of Education from Washburn University in 1994.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Diana taught school at Royal Valley from 1994 to 1997, Jackson Heights from 2003 to 2005 and at Holton from 2005 to 2022. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Holt

Diana married her high school sweetheart, Don Fate, on January 24, 1987 in Manhattan, KS. She is survived by her husband, Don; her son, Zachary Fate (Samantha); her daughter, Mallory Fate (Lane Lassiter); her mother, Ellen Nixon all of Holton; her brother, Howard Nixon and granddaughter, Ava Diana Fate. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Ray Nixon.

Jeanette Ann Brose, 88, of Valley Falls, KS passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Homestead Assisted Living of Topeka, KS. She was born at home on the family farm May 28, 1935 in Valley Falls, KS, the daughter of Leonard and Nellie (Oswald) Hamon.

Jeanette attended a one room school house close to her family- home north of Valley Falls in the Coal Creek community for elementary school and graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1953. After school, she worked for three years as an operator at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Topeka, KS. During those years, she and Melvin began their lifelong adventure. Their love of the Jitterbug (a swing dance) kept them busy nearly every Saturday night.

On September 1, 1956, Jeanette was united in marriage to Melvin Leon Brose at St. Mary- Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls. They shared over 67 years of marriage before Melvin passed away on January 1, 2024.

Jeanette was a loving wife and mother raising their four children on the family farm in Valley Falls. Jeanette was an organizer and took pride in her home, garden and family, as well as several part-time jobs throughout her life. As her children grew and moved from home, she found employment to keep her busy. She attended office training at Washburn University and worked for nine years as a secretary for the Kansas Department of Transportation prior to retiring.

Once retired, spurred by Jeanette- love of travel, Melvin and Jeanette embarked on many years of seasonal employment traveling from one to the next in their 28-foot fifth-wheel trailer. Their adventure included working for U.S. Fish and Wildlife and National Parks: Cape Meares (Oregon), Acadia (Maine), Voyageurs (Minnesota), Sleeping Bear Dunes (Michigan), Yellowstone (Wyoming), Olympic (Washington) as well as Walt Disney World (Florida) and the Space Center NASA (Texas). They continued to adventure travel after fully retiring and settling in Topeka, Kansas for ten years. Their last four years were spent back in Valley Falls nearer to family as they had during Fall and Spring during their years on the road. Jeanette would say they aim to be where it is 70 degrees year around…. they just traveled north in the summer, south in the winter, and home to Kansas when the weather agreed with their goal.

Jeanette- “gift of gab” had her suited for the various jobs she undertook and her involvement in the numerous communities they became part of throughout life. In her hometown of Valley Falls, she had served as 4-H Community and Foods leader, St. Mary- Immaculate Conception Church education teacher, held most officer positions in St. Mary- Altar Society and the Vallerian Federated Women- Club, and helped with various projects for the school, family and memberships. She was proud of her assistance in organizing a campaign for the first swimming pool in Valley Falls.

Throughout her life, Jeanette didn’t know a stranger. She taught her children and grandchildren that talking with others was such a valuable skill. She would carry on conversations with everyone, including four-legged creatures. Although she couldn’t truly “talk to the animals”, during her years in Topeka she spent several days a week at the zoo. Lena, the orangutan, befriended her. She would run across the enclosure to sit across the glass from Jeanette. They would play peek-a-boo and blow kisses.

Jeanette is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, and her parents.

Survivors include her four children Michael Brose (Lesa) of Valley Falls, Deidre Boyd (Patrick) of Valley Falls, Jeffrey Brose (Lisa) of Fort Collins, CO and Denise Jennings (Darren) of Valley Falls; brother, Carroll Hamon (Betty) of Carmichael, CA; 10 grandchildren, Christina, Dustin, Crystal, Dianna, Travis, Kelcie, Katie, Tyler, Austin and Audrey; 13 great grandchildren, Carson, Anna, Calleigh, Adelyn, Grace, Lexie, Liam, Tommy, Cameron, Anthony, Emma, Presley and Kasten; and niece/nephews, Greg, Kay and David.

Phillip Jacob Wingender, 82, of Onaga, KS, formerly of Holton, KS, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Medicalodge Jackson County. He was born September 24, 1941 in Leavenworth, KS, the son of Samuel A. and Lilah J. (LaBarge) Wingender.

Phil grew up in Leavenworth. He was an over the road truck driver for over 50 years. From 1994 - 2003 he was owner and operator of The Coach House Truck Stop.

He was a member of Teamsters Local 41 in Kansas City.

Phil married Joann Perry in 1960, they later divorced in 1981. He married Bonnie Jean Hunt in 1988, she preceded him in death in 1990. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lilah Wingender; daughter, Cynthia Jane Wingender; granddaughter, Taylor Pettit; long-time companion, Carole Hainline; brother, Samuel P. Wingender and sister, Marilyn Ann Bigelow.

Janice M. Morelock, 67, Atchison, Kansas died Monday, April 22, 2024,, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Janice was born September 12, 1956, in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Joseph J. and Gladys Hansen Bewley. She attended Atchison Public Schools and later received her Licensed Practical Nursing Certificate in Kansas City, Kansas in 1995.

She was employed with Cushing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas for seven years. She formerly worked at Lansing Correctional Facility and later served as a bartender for Atchison Elks Lodge and the American Legion Club Room in Atchison.

In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Brandy Cummins, Topeka, KS; two sons, Norman “Nick” Ford, Jr., Atchison, KS; and Robert “Jamie” Ford, Atchison, KS; two sisters, Judy Stiffler, Rushville, MO; Janey Grebe, St. Joseph, MO; and one brother, Gary Bewley, Atchison, KS; fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and longtime friends, Henry Goodpasture, Darren “Elmo” Kastens, Miriam Donovan, Shelia Heintzleman.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents; her longtime friend Henry Goodpasture and son-in-law, Jake Cummins.

Jaynell Franklin Robidoux died peacefully on May 8, 2024 surrounded by family at Hiawatha Amberwell Hospital. She had resided at Maple Heights in Hiawatha since December 2020. She was 84.

Jaynell was born Frankie Jaynell Briggs in Lubbock, Texas on November 11, 1939, the daughter of Dorothy “Nanny” and Frank Lee Roy Briggs. She was adopted by William “Grandaddy” Franklin on January 19, 1952 and named Lottie Jaynell Franklin. As an only child, Jaynell enjoyed tremendous love, affection, and attention from her parents.

Jaynell married Donald Louis Robidoux on April 28, 1967, in San Angelo, Texas. Don and Jaynell celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary together just days before she passed on to her heavenly home.

Jaynell taught her children the importance of loving the Lord, serving your neighbors, and respecting your elders. After settling in Hiawatha in 1976, Jaynell and her family attended Zion Lutheran Church where she was active in LWML and Sunday school. After serving her family as a homemaker raising Jim, Jackie, and Donell, Jaynell worked as the Executive Director of the Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce where she organized the annual Hiawatha Halloween Parade. She later worked as an executive assistant and office manager at Flair Fold and RHS. After retiring, she earned an Associate- Degree from Highland Community College, and she then worked as a substitute teacher. Jaynell also served on the BCDS Board of Directors.

Jaynell enjoyed bowling and attending the sporting events of her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader, and she knitted or crocheted many warm items for numerous family members and friends. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys, and she watched football games on television until the very end.

Survivors include husband Donald, children Jim Robidoux (Emily) of Hiawatha, KS, Jackie Elliott of San Tan Valley, AZ, Donell Robidoux Zerkel (Brad) of Independence, MO, twelve grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James Smith (father of Jim), and husband Eugene Morrison (father of Jackie).

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Funeral services will be at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha at 10:30 am, Friday, May 24 with burial services to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. There will be a light lunch served at the church following the burial of the ashes.

Mary Ann Theresa (Sauer) Krier (93) departed unexpectedly from this world on Friday, May 10th, 2024. Born on May 3, 1931, to William "Bill" and Cecilia (Schuetz) Sauer of rural Atchison County. Mary Ann's life was a testament to love, faith, and compassion.

Mary Ann attended Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, KS, graduating in 1949. On May 13, 1953, she exchanged vows with her beloved Francis George "Sonny" Krier at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atchison, KS. Their union was a beacon of love and devotion until Sonny's passing on April 8, 2017.

From this sacred bond, Mary Ann leaves behind a legacy of love embodied in her son and two daughters: Terrance and Christine Krier of McPherson, KS; Judy and Bruce Chalfant of Huron, KS; and Jane Knudson and Allen Simmons of Denton, KS. Her love extended to her 11 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, and 43 great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann's family circle also encompasses her brother, George Sauer of Topeka, KS; sister-in-law Mildred Hoffman of Denton, KS; along with numerous nieces and nephews, and her best friend and "snow-bird" housemate, Phyllis Cain of Donna, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sonny, her parents, a grandson, Mathias Krier, and her siblings, Wilma Dooley, and Robert Sauer.

Deeply rooted in her Catholic faith, Mary Ann found solace in daily recitations of the rosary and was an active parishioner of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Effingham, KS. She selflessly volunteered her time and was a member of the Altar Society, embodying the spirit of service and devotion.

Beyond her faith, Mary Ann found joy in life's simple pleasures. She and Sonny spent much of their free time camping and fishing with friends and family, often sharing their bounty on a hot summer day with a fish fry. Mary Ann's talents extended to crocheting, canning, and cooking, skills she lovingly passed down to her daughters and granddaughters.

As a homemaker, Mary Ann never officially retired, but she and Sonny were snowbirds, traveling with their camper trailer to Donna, TX, each winter. When they were home, their house on Main was a hub of activity and a favorite gathering place for her grandchildren and their friends, particularly during the county fair, and there was always a cookie jar of vanilla cream cookies waiting by the kitchen door.

Mary Ann also enjoyed friendly competition, whether it was a game of Mexican Train Dominos, 5 Crowns, Hand & Foot or Bingo. Her spirited nature sometimes surfaced in defeat, but her laughter and joy were infectious, bringing warmth to every gathering.

Mary Ann's family will receive friends and loved ones at a Rosary service on Thursday, May 16th, at 6:00 pm at Becker Chapel in Effingham, KS, followed by visitation until 8:00 pm. Her funeral will be held on Friday, May 17th, at 10:30 am at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Effingham, KS.

William “Bill” Pauly died surrounded by family on May 12th, Ascension Sunday. Born January 11, 1952 to Gerald and Helena (Gronniger) Pauly, Bill was the fifth of six children.

He was raised on the farm near Purcell and graduated from Midway High School in 1969. When not farming or feeding cattle his family spent time at the Lake of the Ozarks. Bill was a talented water skier when he was younger. Until 1976, he served in the National Guard.

He married Elizabeth (Cramer) January 7th,1978. They had three children.

He was always active in his community. He volunteered with Farm Bureau, Kansas Livestock Association, National Corn Growers Association, Kansas Agricultural Rural Leadership, and Midway Booster Club.

An ATV accident on October 31, 2001 left him paralyzed. Eventually he moved full time to Lake of the Ozarks and began his life- second chapter.

Bill was a devout Catholic. He was active on parish council, finance council, as a lector, extraordinary minister, catechist, and a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary- in Purcell and St. Patrick's in Laurie, MO.

Preceded by parents and brother James Pauly.

Survived by Elizabeth his wife; siblings Betty Knecht, Bob Pauly, Mary McCauley, Kathy Albers; children Jerry (Kathryn), Mindy (Jason), Matt (Jessica); and grandchildren Katelyn, William, Lily, Madilyn, Frances, Ambrose, and TBD.

William “Bill” Jensen, 59, of Hiawatha, KS, formerly of White Cloud, KS, died Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at the Amberwell Health Center Hiawatha.

He was born at Hiawatha Community Hospital, May 19, 1964, the son of Arnold and Regina “Jean” Rhodd Jensen and had lived in Doniphan and Brown Counties all of his life. ‘Candy Man’ one of his favorite nicknames attended Hiawatha schools before transferring to Highland High School/Doniphan West where he graduated. He worked for the Iowa Tribe for several years, and attended CDL education and certification, along with heavy equipment education and certification. He also worked for Casino White Cloud, Sac & Fox Casino, Golden Eagle Casino, Grandview Oil Co., and Waggoner Water Conditioning.

Bill was an enrolled member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. His many hobbies included recycling, beading, crafts, visiting and was well known for playing Santa.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother James D. Jensen, brothers: Bobby Ray Roberts and Frank Roberts.

Survivors include brother Henry “Hank” Roberts of Falls City, NE, a sister Judy Curtis of Kansas City, KS, step-brother Arnold Jensen, Jr. with nieces, nephews and many native brothers and sisters.

Cyrilla Joy Haverkamp, aged 66, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, peacefully passed away on May 4, 2024.

She was born in Independence, Kansas, to Lavene “Beanie” and Cyril Koch on June 3, 1957. Cyrilla had four brothers (Johnny, Roger, Jeff, and Steve). She graduated from Nemaha Valley High in 1975. After graduation she attended Marymount College in Salina, KS where she met the love of her life, Randy Haverkamp. She then transferred to Emporia College to study nursing. On her 21st birthday, June 3, 1978 she and Randy married and then moved to Loveland, CO shortly after. There, she attended the University of Northern Colorado and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse and worked throughout northern Colorado at McKee Medical Center, Good Samaritan Home Care, Poudre Valley Hospital, and Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR). She returned to school in 2008 and became a Certified Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurse (CWOCN). Her dedication to her profession was evident in her development of new techniques and tools for wound ostomy care and had several accredited journal studies published. After over 43 years, she retired from nursing in 2016 as a BSN, RN, and CWOCN.

Cyrilla's family was her greatest source of joy and pride. She and Randy were blessed with four children: Nicholas (Michelle) of Centerton, AR, Leah (Justin) of Paxton, NE, Nathan (Angela) of Loveland, CO, and Jesse (Wendy) of Eaton, CO. As a mother, Cyrilla's love was unconditional and selfless, always prioritizing her children's needs. Her love extended to her eight grandchildren, who brought her immense happiness and pride, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She enjoyed attending sporting events and 4-H activities, as well as traveling with her kids and grandkids. Cyrilla loved the moments of babysitting the younger kids and, as they grew older, having them over for sleepovers. She also never missed an opportunity for a good arm-wrestling match with her grandkids. Outside of spending time with her family, Cyrilla enjoyed baking, walking, sewing, shopping, and catching up with friends.

Even in her retirement, Cyrilla remained active and dedicated to serving her community. She found fulfillment in volunteering with Birthright, sewing hundreds of dresses for Dress A Girl Around the World, and participating in a Catholic Medical Mission to Nicaragua. Her compassion extended to the Pineridge Reservation, where she organized donations for women and children, and delivered clothing and supplies. She also served as a Eucharist Minister at MCR, with Saint John- Catholic Church, further demonstrating her commitment to her faith. She deepened her understanding of her faith by completing the 4-year Denver Catholic Biblical School, a testament to her lifelong learning and spiritual growth.

She had an insatiable desire to travel and particularly loved exploring the United States and Europe. She embarked on pilgrimages in Germany, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, and Italy. Her most cherished adventure was hiking 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago in Spain and France in honor of her mother and all her family members who had passed away from PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease). In 2022, Randy and Cyrilla traveled throughout Israel, where they visited the Franciscan Wedding Church in Cana of Galilee in Israel and renewed their wedding vows on May 24th.

Cyrilla is survived by her husband Randy Haverkamp, son Nick (Michelle) Haverkamp, daughter Leah (Justin) Fote, son Nate (Angela) Haverkamp, son Jesse (Wendy) Haverkamp, grandchildren Ella Fote, Colton Fote, Abby Fote, Jacob Fote, Isaac Haverkamp, Justin Fote, Decker Haverkamp, Ashlyn Haverkamp, and brothers Jeff Koch and Steve Koch.
Cyrilla was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Johnny and Roger Koch.

Lawrence Raymond Clark, age 86, of Atchison, KS, died peacefully on May 1, 2024, at the VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare in Topeka, KS.

Larry was born on June 28, 1937, in Atchison, KS, the son of the late Raymond Clark and Maurine (Caldwell) Clark. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School, graduated from Maur Hill Prep in 1954, and furthered his education at St. Benedict- College where he played on the football team.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 27 SEP 1954, until his honorable discharge on 14 SEP 1956. He began his employment at F. P. Gering before taking on a lifelong role as a lineman. He worked for the power company in Atchison, KP&L, later Western Resources and served his entire career there until his retirement from what was then, Westar Energy. Larry took countless call outs and overtime hours as a loyal employee. Since working one full time job wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he also had cattle at home to tend to and raise. He loved his cattle and the weekly livestock auctions; you just never really knew what he might bring home from the auction each week.

He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church, now St. Benedict Parish and the V.F.W. in Atchison. He had a great love for sporting events and attending his children and grandchildren- different activities. No matter what the weather or reason, they always had to sit in the exact same spot everywhere they went. He loved his family and enjoyed life to the fullest.

He and Margaret “Cookie” (Cooke) Clark were united in marriage on October 5, 1963, at St. Joseph- Church in Nortonville. They shared sixty plus years of marriage together; Cookie survives of the home in Atchison. He is survived by three children, Michael Clark of Mission, KS; Mark (Stacy) Clark of Lenexa, KS; and Linda Boos of Topeka, KS; son-in-law, Trent Scholz, of Lancaster, KS; eight grandchildren, Patrick Boos, Shawn Boos, Leah Scholz, Rebecca “Beba” (Beau) Vowels, Augie Scholz, Mary Clark, Catherine Clark and Emma Clark; one great grandchild, Bridger Boos, and one on the way and a sister, Harriet Celano.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Arensberg and a daughter, Lori Scholz.

He is survived by three children, Michael Clark of Mission, KS; Mark (Stacy) Clark of Lenexa, KS; and Linda Boos of Topeka, KS; son-in-law, Trent Scholz, of Lancaster, KS; eight grandchildren, Patrick Boos, Shawn Boos, Leah Scholz, Rebecca “Beba” (Beau) Vowels, Augie Scholz, Mary Clark, Catherine Clark and Emma Clark; one great grandchild, Bridger Boos, and one on the way and a sister, Harriet Celano.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Arensberg and a daughter, Lori Scholz.

Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, May 13, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Adalee Ann was born on April 22, 1933, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Marie (Doyle) and Jessie Padgett. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1951. She was a resident of Atchison until 2021 when she moved to Emporia. Adalee and Dale Miller were married on Aug. 25, 1951. He preceeded her in death on Oct 4, 2017.

Adalee was employed by Phalen Chevrolet before becoming a wonderful mother and devoted wife. She was very involved with her two daughters’ activities in school and church. She served on numerous committees at the First Baptist Church where she was a member. She was involved as a leader with Girl Scout Troup 145 in Atchison for many years. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

She worked as a merchandiser for American Greetings where she met many people that became friends of hers. She was a very caring and loving person. Her smile was always there to greet you.

Adalee enjoyed camping with the Topeks camping club, gardening, yard work, sewing and ceramics. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Adalee is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Mark) Fink, Topeka, KS and Lori (Gary) Andrews, Emporia, KS, two grandchildren Sarah Fink, Desota, KS and Sinjin (Amber) Andrews, Emporia, KS. Two great grandchildren Abeni (Brandon) Quinn, Emporia, Alivia Andrews, Emporia, KS and one great great grandchild Liam Quinn. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Dale , a brother Howard Padgett, and two sisters Dorothy White, and Bonnie Maxwell preceded her in death.

Sherri L. Coulter, 67, Atchison, Kansas, died Sunday, April 28, 2024, at her residence.

Memorial Services will be Friday, May 10, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, with Fr. Jeremy Heppler, OSB, officiating. Sherri was born August 13, 1956, in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Don and Rosie Turpin. She graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in 1974.

She was employed with the Headstart program in Atchison for a period before becoming a caregiver for her son Kevin for the last 44 years.

She was married to Michael Coulter. Mr. Coulter preceded her in death on February 16, 2009.

Sherri enjoyed working on her home and restoring it to historic accuracy. She loved spending time with her siblings and family. Sherri was an advocate for those with special needs.

Survivors include her two sons, Steve (Dana) Coulter, Omaha, NE, Kevin Coulter, Atchison, KS, her father, Don Turpin, six siblings, Mike (Tracey) Turpin, Chris (Melissa) Turpin, Kathy Phillips, Vicki Bennett, Pam (Mike) Andre, Tracie Turpin, two grandchildren, Jordan (Riley) Rischling, Taylor Coulter, and a great granddaughter, Emersyn Rischling.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Rosie Turpin.

William "Bill" Bruce Buethe, 86, of rural Elk Creek, Nebraska, went to be with his Lord, Monday, May 6, 2024.

He was born to Harold Carl and Erma Marie (Gottula) Buethe on February 14, 1938 in Pawnee City, Nebraska. Bill was baptized into the Christian Faith in 1938. He remained a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Bill attended District 59 (Hog Ridge), St. Peter's Lutheran Parochial School and graduated from Elk Creek High School in 1956. He was an early member of the West Elk Creek 4-H Club. Bill participated in many different livestock projects, but Angus cattle are what grabbed his attention. After graduation, Bill worked at the Campbell's Soup Company and the family farm. Bill became a member of the American Angus Association May 15, 1959 and built a registered Angus herd while taking over the family farm from his parents.

He was united in marriage to Susie Kirkendall on January 14, 1977 at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Elk Creek, Nebraska. The herd continued to grow after his marriage to Susie and the birth of their two sons, Bruce and Tim. Bill not only enjoyed raising and selling bulls, but never passed up a chance to go to a sale or visit with other Angus herds.

Bill served in the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1964 and was a member of the Tracy Bates American Legion Post #370 of Elk Creek.

He is survived by his wife Susie, sons, Bruce Buethe and wife Amanda of Hutchinson, KS and Tim Buethe and wife Cassie of Elk Creek, granddaughter Tessa Buethe of Hutchinson, KS, sister Eldred Woltemath of Lincoln, father-in-law, Dean Kirkendall of Falls City and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Erma, mother-in-law Patty Kirkendall and brother-in-law Lee Woltemath.

Charles was an Army veteran who spent his lifetime in rural southeast Nebraska as a farmer, loving husband, father, and friend to many. He enjoyed many years of being a master wood crafter in his retirement at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri.

Mary Ellen Cochren, 98, originally from Whiting, KS, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Villa St. Francis Nursing Home in Olathe, KS. She was born February 20, 1926 in Whiting, KS, the daughter of B. Ernest and Kathryn R. (Snyder) Williams.

Mary attended Whiting High School until her Junior year and graduated from Topeka High School in 1943. She spent 64 years in Kansas City, MO and lived in Kansas again since 2021. Mary was a wife, mother, grandmother and bankteller.

She was an original member of Nu Phi Mu Sorority and longtime member of WIBC (Women- International Bowling Congress).

Mary married Walter Wendell Cochren on August 26, 1949 in Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1998 after 49 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents, B. Ernest and Kathryn Williams; 3 sisters, Caroline Grulke, Phyllis Denton and JoAnn Nelson; a brother, John Williams and son-in-law, Doug Miller.

Linda Sue Schultz, 64, of Auburn, Nebraska was born on August 20, 1959, in Humboldt, Nebraska to Homer August and Maxine (Harshbarger) Schultz. She was raised in Humboldt where she attended school and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1978. Linda moved to Auburn, Nebraska where she worked for various restaurants. Linda was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the church choir and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

Linda passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at her home in Auburn, Nebraska having reached the earthly age of sixty-four years, eight months, and fifteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Schultz, sister-in-law Debbie Rue Schultz, an Aunt Ruth Jurgens, and infant twin boys.

Inez Anna Gebers of Auburn was born January 8, 1932, north of Johnson, Nebraska, to George and Minnie (Kanzmeier) Woerlen. Inez passed away May 4, 2024, at the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, having reached the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 26 days. Inez graduated with the class of 1950 from Johnson High School. On October 7, 1951, Inez was united in marriage to Loren Gebers. Loren and Inez raised five children on the family farm northwest of Johnson. Inez loved being on the farm. After Loren passed away in 1992, Inez moved off the farm and into Johnson where she lived until October 2020. She then moved to Longs Creek in Auburn.

Inez was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for 24 years and was a member of the Zion ALCW. She was also a member of the Gideon-, J and M Golden Ruler- Club, and the Sundowner-. Inez enjoyed baking, taking photos, quilting, and volunteering. Inez was preceded in death by her parents, husband Loren and son Dennis.

Inez is survived by her children: Teresa of Norfolk, NE; Duane (Sandy) of Coon Rapids, MN; Marcia (Ira) Beasterfield of Rib Lake, WI; Phillip Gebers of Lincoln, NE; daughter-in-law Diane of Gretna, NE; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.

Orin Leo Edelman, 97, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away on Monday, May 6, 2024, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Orin was born October 31, 1926, in Sabetha, Kansas to Alphia and Emma (Stahl) Edelman. He grew up on the family farm west of Berwick, Kansas. Orin graduated from the eighth grade from National 107.

Orin worked for Korber Farms west of Bern, Kansas for two years, and then he returned to the family farm. Orin raised livestock, farmed the land, and performed custom chopping. Orin had a talent for mechanics which enabled him to repair and make various items that he needed for his farming operation. Orin maintained his farming operation until his health began to fail. He spent his last years at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Orin was preceded in death by his parents; his three sisters, Karoline, Berniece, and Lena Edelman; his three brothers, Clemens, Richard, and Eugene Edelman; and his two sisters-in-law, Judith and Shirley Edelman.

Orin is survived by his two brothers, Leonard (Anna) Edelman and Nathan (Marlene) Edelman; his sister, Doris (Virgil) Meyer; and his sister-in-law, Marjorie Edelman.

Michael James Dunn, 61, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 4, 2024 at Falls City. He was born September 25, 1962 at Omaha, NE to James and Joyce Irene (Strinz) Dunn.

Michael was raised in Omaha and graduated from Westside High School in 1981. He then attended nursing school at College of St. Mary-. He worked for Marriott Hotels for many years before become employed in the medical field as a CNA, mostly working in nursing homes; including Falls City Nursing and Rehab, where was a van driver, since 2021. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Michael is survived by his wife, Michelle Navarrett of Omaha, brothers, Kevin of DeSoto, KS, Larry and his wife Chantel of Malvern, IA and a niece, Rosie Joyce Dunn, nephew, Brodie Crockett of Norfolk, VA and five step-children. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Patrick in infancy.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 10:10 AM (that is not a misprint) at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Prairie Union Cemetery at Shubert, NE.

Dorothy Marie Rieke (Wilberger), 93, was born on October 19, 1930, in Julian, NE, in the house her grandfather helped build. Growing up on a farm meant raising chickens and riding horses, an activity she loved.

Dorothy graduated from Nebraska City High School and started teaching in a rural schoolhouse at age 16. Later, she received her bachelor's and master- degrees in secondary education from Peru State College and took additional courses from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Oklahoma.

In 1952, Dorothy married Kenneth Rieke, and they had a loving marriage for 71.5 years. Dorothy- family called them the “lovebirds.” They enjoyed travel to Branson, Missouri, and Norton, Kansas, church activities, dinners with friends and quiet drives in the country.

Dorothy invested in students' lives during her 44-year teaching career in secondary education. She taught in the Auburn, Stella, Humboldt, Johnson and Table Rock districts and loved every minute in the classroom. English was her primary subject, but she also coached volleyball and led a drama club.

After retirement, she worked for Humanities Nebraska, speaking at 80 engagements and to over 4,000 people throughout Nebraska. Her topics included “Ghosts, Ghouls and Goblins” and “Nebraska During the Great Depression."

Her background as an English teacher equipped her to write and publish hundreds of magazine articles about various topics including travel, agriculture, historical events, baking and nostalgia. A few publications where her articles appeared include family RVing, Backyard Poultry, Country Neighbor, Nostalgia Digest and Escapees.

Dorothy- love for the Lord led her to many serving opportunities including taking homemade meals to the sick, inviting friends to holiday dinners, and teaching a Sunday School class at the Auburn Christian Church. She also sent monthly letters of encouragement to those in rest homes.

Dorothy joined our Lord in Heaven on May 3, 2024. She is preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Roy Wilberger, and her sister, Phyllis Sanders. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth, her daughter, Cindy, and her sister-in-law Muriel Docker.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, May 8, 11:00 a.m. at the Auburn Christian Church. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Visitation will be Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 5:00 to 6:00.

Joyce Louise (Nitz) Klein, age 65, of Atchison, KS, passed peacefully on May 3, 2024, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, MO.

A service to celebrate Joyce- life will be on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB, officiating. A visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Joyce was born on October 11, 1958, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of the late Harold Nitz and Corinne (Jones) Nitz. She attended Atchison public schools and graduated from Atchison High School.

Joyce was a caring, loving and social person and she used those qualities to pursue a career as a dietary aid at Senior Village Nursing Home for over thirty years until her retirement in 2021.

She married Pat Klein in Atchison, KS, on July 1, 1982, at the First Christian Church. They loved spending time together, dancing at the American Legion and their weekend dinner dates. Joyce enjoyed watching the Chiefs and the Royals, playing solitaire on the computer and flying across the country to different destinations to visit family and see new places. She will be remembered for her great cooking, especially her fried chicken and homemade pies. She loved people and when you saw her in public, you always knew that she would say hello and enjoy a conversation with you.

She is survived by her husband, Pat Klein; sisters, Kay (Gary) Baker of Lancaster, KS, Linda Parrott of Rushville, MO, Ann (Jerry) Lewman of Atchison, KS; a brother, Skip (Beverly) Nitz of Cummings, KS; brother-in-law, Mike (Kathy) Klein of Wichita, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John and Jeep Nitz; and a brother-in-law, Jim Parrott.

Thomas J. Kohake, 73, of Seneca, died on May 1, 2024 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri.

Tom was born on March 11, 1951 in Seneca to Leonard “Duke” and Grace Bergman Kohake. He grew up on the Kohake farm southeast of Seneca and attended Sts. Peter and Paul School; graduating from high school in 1969.

Tom was married to Janet Ronnebaum on May 12, 1973 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, they later divorced. To this union a daughter was born, Nichole. The couple made their home in California where Tom was employed by Flemming Company; he retired from there in 1989. Later that year, he moved back to Seneca where he started his hay and straw business that he operated until the day he passed away. On September 24, 2010 he married Glennette Mitchell were married, they later divorced.

Tom never knew a stranger and always was able to carry on a conversation with anyone on any subject. He collected coins and in his spare time and enjoyed delivering his hay to southern Missouri.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard on November 27, 2020 and Grace on April 6, 2010.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Nichole (Alex); his grandchildren Audrey and Colton; his brothers, James Kohake of Seneca, Patrick Kohake and Gerard Kohake both of Topeka; and his sisters, Jane Kreimer of Raleigh, North Carolina, Kris Haverkamp of Fairview and Linda Kohake of Seneca.

A rosary will be prayed at 2 PM on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM on Monday, May 6, 2024 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Seneca.

Ronald G. “Ronnie” Masters, 72, of Union Star, Missouri, passed away Monday, April 29, 2024.

Ronnie was born on June 3, 1951, in St. Joseph, Missouri to George A. and Naomi Jean (Herren) Masters.

He graduated Troy High School in 1969 and earned his associate degree from Highland Community College. Ronnie worked various places, including machine mechanic, Silgan, for 25 years, construction in Oregon and supervisor of construction missionary in Mexico.

Ronnie married Anne Kernen on August 24, 1979, in Troy, Kansas. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Timothy Allen.

Additional survivors: daughters, Kerri Reichel (Terry) and Brianna Reichel (Kevin).

Grandchildren, Ezra, Lydia, Naomi, Lucas, Micah and Malakai.

Harold Niedfeldt, 89, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 1, 2024 at Omaha, NE. He was born March 7, 1935 in Falls City to Albert and Anna (Grossoehmig) Niedfeldt, Sr.

He married Joann Krueger on May 27, 1956 at St. Paul- Lutheran Church, 6 miles north of Falls City.

Harold lived north of Falls City and moved southeast of Shubert at the age of 16. He attended grade school at District 17 rural school and St. Paul- Lutheran School. He graduated from Falls City High School in 1953. After graduation, he farmed in the Falls City and Shubert areas and also sold Archer Oil on the side. He retired in 2007. They moved into Falls City following his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul- Lutheran Church (6 miles north of Falls City) and held many offices in church leadership and was a past president of Martin Luther Association at Beatrice and a board member of the Verdon Rural Protective Fire District from 1979-2007. The couple enjoyed traveling and took many trips and Harold liked to fish.

Harold is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Joann of Falls City, daughter, Rita Kreifels and her husband Scott of Verdon, sisters, Eileen Hall and her husband Lyle and Elaine Nispel both of Lincoln, NE, grandchildren, Alan (Courtney) Kreifels, Eric (Skylar) Kreifels, Kari (Taylor) Cook all of Falls City, great-grandchildren, Emberly and Hayden Cook, Kamdyn and Cord Kreifels., sister-in-law, Jean Niedfeldt of Falls City. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Richard and Ronald, brothers, Glenn, Albert, Jr. and Kenneth and a sister, Evelyn Wissman.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul- Lutheran Church (6 miles north of Falls City) with Reverend Brian Holle officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul- Lutheran Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 7-8:00 PM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.

Judy Lee Armstrong, 80, of Topeka, KS, formerly of Holton, KS, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at Midland Care in Topeka. She was born December 10, 1943 in Ft. Bragg, NC, the daughter of Roy and Lelah (Truman) McKinsey.

Judy graduated from Holton High School in 1962; she was proud of her cheerleading and flute during her high school years. She also attended Clarks Business School in Topeka.

She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Topeka for over 24 years in upper management, retiring in1995. After retirement she went to work from1997 - 2014 for Coldwell Banker Real Estate as a realtor.

In her early years, she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Holton and, Job- Daughters. She enjoyed visiting libraries, reading; she usually had a book in her hand. She took much joy in fishing. Judy also loved fresh flowers and was an avid Kansas Jayhawk basketball fan.

Judy married Darrell Harshaw on May 26, 1963 in Holton, KS; they later divorced. She married Lane “Rue” Armstrong on November 26, 2005 in Topeka, KS, he survives of the home. Rue and Judy actually started their friendship in 1957, back in high school.

Survivors include children, Kim Mooers (Marc) of Lenexa, KS, Shelly Harshaw of Overland Park, KS, Kevin Armstrong (Pricilla) of Yorba Linda, CA, Gwin Funk (Trent) of Fredonia, AZ, Deneen Brake (Mike) of Lake Havasue, AZ, Kristina Forshee (Rob) of Boerne, TX and Tricia Pacinelli (Joe) of Littleton, CO; 1 sister, Linda Montgomery (Larry) of Harveyville, KS; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild on the way.

Mary Ann Rieschick, 79, of rural Falls City passed away with family and Minister at her side on Tuesday April 30, 2024. Daughter of Lawrence and Anna (Mack) Bierman she was born October 26, 1944, where she was raised on the farm. She attended District 25 Vaughn country school for grades 1st thru 8th grade. Then attended Falls City High School where she graduated in 1962. She was an active 4-H member in her youth exhibiting foods, sewing and modeling her constructed garments at the Richardson County Fair.

On April 11, 1964, she married Leonard Rieschick at St Paul- Lutheran Church 20th and Towle. The couple established their first home north of Falls City in Leonard- Grandpa- home, John Rieschick. The following year they moved to their current residence north of Falls City.

Mary Ann was employed at Tober- clothing store in Falls City until she gave birth to the couple- first child Vicky. Their second child Tony would come a few years later. She was an equal partner with Leonard in the farm and Holstein dairy cattle herd operation tending to the younger livestock along with field work for planting in the spring and a full-time homemaker.

Mary Ann was an active member of St Paul- Lutheran Church, she served on church council and the Women of the ELCA, where she held many officer positions. She showed her creativity by constructing church banners for each season in the church year and was also an active member with various activities from church choir, Sunday school teacher and even helping make soup for the annual soup supper.

Mary Ann- leadership was also on display as 4-H leader of the Purple Ribbon 4-H club for over 25 years. She helped with many contests during the year and the annual Jr Fair in Humboldt as well as foods project leader. A longtime member of the New Timers Extension Club, she sang in the Joy Belles, a local women- choir, and served on the Richardson County Election Board for numerous years, she even found time to be an Artex Paint dealer and enjoyed many hobbies such as cooking painting, sewing and house plants.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband Leonard of 60 years. A daughter Vicky, Mrs Steven Yoesel, son Tony all of Falls City, grandson Chris Yoesel of Lincoln brother Gary Bierman and his wife Carol Falls City, and the family dog Blacky. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson in infancy John Yoesel.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church (20th and Towle St.) with Pastor Joanna Kathol officiating. Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

Jamie Jean Herrmann-Niehues, 46, of Wichita, Kansas, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Jamie was born on December 4, 1977, in Sabetha, Kansas to Mark and Debbie (King) Herrmann. She attended Sabetha schools and graduated from Sabetha High School in the class of 1996. Jamie was employed for many years at Wilson Trailer Company in Sioux City, Iowa. Most recently, she was employed at LKQ Auto Parts in Wichita, Kansas. She took great pride in her work and was a dedicated employee.

Jamie was a devoted mother to her two sons, Nathan and Jonathan, whom she dearly cherished. She was deeply passionate about her role as a mother and dedicated herself wholeheartedly to nurturing and supporting her sons. Throughout her life, Jamie brought joy to those around her with her infectious laughter and warm smile. Family and friends will never forget Jamie- natural ability to play the piano and bring melodies to life with her fingertips. Her music filled the hearts of those around her, creating moments of joy and lasting memories.

In recent years, Jamie found solace and strength through her faith and grew spiritually alongside her life group at her church. She embraced her spiritual journey with an open heart, drawing closer to her beliefs, and finding comfort in her community of fellow believers.

Jamie was known for her unwavering love, kindness, and selflessness towards her family and friends. Her memory will be forever cherished, and she will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for her boundless love, musical talent, and the profound impact she had on the lives of those fortunate enough to have known her.

Jamie was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Ray and Alice Herrmann; her maternal grandfather, Ward King; and her maternal grandmother, Helen Finger.

Jamie is survived by her beloved sons, Nathan and Jonathan; her loving parents, Mark and Debbie Herrmann; her two brothers, Scott Herrmann and Jesse (Shelly) Herrmann; her sister, Lindsey (Jason); her three cherished nephews, Kobe Shroyer, Ty (Lydia Myers) Herrmann, and Daniel Herrmann; her three cherished nieces, Morgan (Christian) Meyer, Allie Herrmann, and Emma Merritt; her aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Sabetha, Kansas. Prior to the service, a visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. The service will be live-streamed via the Crossroads Wesleyan Church Facebook page. Orrel Edward Berry, beloved father, pops, and friend to all who knew him passed away on April 23rd, 2024 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Orrel was born on January 17th, 1970 in Atchison, Kansas, and leaves a legacy of love and laughter that will be cherished by those he touched.

Orrel- daughter, Cheyenne and grandson Adler were the lights of his life. He adored them both with every fiber of his being and took immense pride in watching Adler turn in to the blossoming little boy he is becoming. He couldn’t wait to teach Stink (Adler) everything he could. Orrel pursued a career in bridge construction and was a devoted crane operator. He was known for his sense of humor. Orrel was passionate about many things like trains, space, and tying knots. He also appreciated music and attended many concerts. He was a savvy individual who always had a random fact to share—like how many tons of paint is on the world's largest crane. The man never met a stranger and had a talent for creating a family out of many friends. He truly loved being Pops. In his free time, he enjoyed tinkering, watching YouTube videos, and fishing.

Orrel was preceded in death by his father and step-mother, Charles and Kathy Berry, and mother Nancy Ann Frad.

He is survived by his daughter Cheyenne (Troy) and grandson Adler. He also survived by his sisters Angie Berry (Robert), Kim Isenberg (Mike), Kris Lewis, Melinda Pattangall, and half siblings Daryl Watson, Randy Watson, Kirk Watson (Donna), along with many other friends and family members. He will be greatly missed by his un-biological brothers and many friends. Orrel loved everybody and everybody loves Orrel!!!!!

A Celebration of Orrel will be held on May 11th, 2024 at 2 p.m. at the Christian Center located at 519 North 1st Street in Hiawatha, with Pastor Tony French officiating. Refreshments will be served following services as we remember our friend.

Rita Ferne Walder, 81, of Auburn, passed away at Midland Care Hospice House Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Ferne was a fighter and beat cancer nearly 20 years ago, but this new illness was a battle she did not have the strength to win.

Ferne was born on April 13, 1943, in Fort Scott, Kansas to Carl and Rhoda (Claborn) Johnson. She attended Holton High School as a freshman and graduated from Mayetta High School in May of 1961. She was active in softball, basketball, volleyball and other activities like twirling, cheerleading, choir and band.

She married Clifton Walder on June 4, 1961 in Holton, Kansas and had three children, Randy, Christie and Rhonda. The family resided in Hiawatha, Kansas for twenty years while the children were school aged. Ferne was a Red Cross Gray Lady, Boy Scout Troop Leader and a devoted and loving wife and mother. She enjoyed bowling and going to National and State bowling tournaments with her sisters Carlyn and Bernie.

Ferne and Clif moved to Auburn, Kansas in November of 1988 and she enjoyed the community events. She was often receiving a medal for her efforts. Shuffleboard, camping, fishing, taking rides with Clif and sitting in the front yard waving at neighbors were favorite pastimes.

Ferne joined Clif for many years making good country music in multiple bands. They helped celebrate many weddings and anniversaries with Ferne playing the bass guitar and Clif playing the lead guitar. Ferne was part of the Elmont Opry band and Kansas Prairie Pickers.

Ferne was proud to have seen each of her seven grandchildren graduate high school and taught the five oldest grandchildren how to water ski.

Ferne worked at the Dairy Queen, Lindy's and Schroth Grocery Stores and Agri Painting in Hiawatha. She retired from Kansas Electric Cooperatives in Topeka after 20 years of service.

Ferne was proceeded in death by her parents; siblings, Bertha Zelfer, Carlyn Kaiser, Mary Lou Miller, Bernice Schuette; baby brother, William; step-grandson, Jacob Christie; and great-grandchildren, Ty Walder and Amelia Hack.

Survivors include her husband Clif, son, Randy (Jonna) Walder of Wheatland, Missouri, daughters, Christie Bauerle of Auburn and Rhonda (Dave) Christie of Effingham; Grandchildren, Jessica (Skylar) O’Dell, Raymond (Samantha) Walder, Jennifer (Jesse) Hack, Amy (Johnny) Russell, Gabrielle Schuetz, Craig and Brandan Bauerle; Great-grandchildren, Conner, Clayton and Carsyn Teat, Katie, Will and Brooks Russell, Ely and Reece Walder and Rhayna-Lynn and Legacie Hack.

Joseph R. Smith (Ronnie), of Everest Kansas passed away on April 29, 2024, surrounded by his children. At the age of 81, he peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.

Ronnie was born to Joe and Ethel Smith on October 9, 1942, in Horton, Kansas. He graduated from Everest High School in 1960 and achieved his associate degree in business shortly after. He married Connie Lewallen in 1964 and had 6 beautiful children. In those early years, he went back to help his parents with farming and started a farm of his own.

Raised amongst the fields he tended with care, Ronnie dedicated his life to farming, teaching his children and grandchildren the values of hard work, staying humble, and being resourceful. He cherished being known as Pee-Paw by many of his grandchildren.

Recently divorced, he forged rich friendships and found an extended family with his second career at the Golden Eagle casino where he worked for nearly 30 years. Beyond the fields and his work at the casino, Ronnie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. His infectious laughter, warmth, and quick humor touched the hearts of all who knew him. Whether doing chores with his grandkids, fixing whatever needed to be fixed, or a quick trip to Vegas, he was always up for adventure and made the most of every moment of life.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Larry Smith in 1960, Richard Smith in 1963, his mother in 1996 and father in 2000.

He will truly be missed by his survivors who include his children; Rhonda (Rick) Cairo, Lisa (Frank) Jodoin, Amy (Jim) Yankovich, Sherry (Zach) Edwards, Jamiee (Gary) Miller, Nick (Carley) Smith, his 16 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and countless extended family and friends.
